Kaneshie market, one of Accra’s busy business centres is gradually deteriorating into a mess with heaps of rubbish scattered all around. The pavement meant for pedestrians is all occupied by market women.
Commuters with their belongings always manage to maneuver their way through anytime with their belongings to their destinations.
Some part of the place is being enveloped with litter and choked gutters at the stretch of the road posing danger to motorists plying the road. People cannot stand the stench emanating from these gutters, with mounting filth a commonplace.
One of the pedestrians in an interview with The Heritage newspaper expressed displeasure saying, it is disheartening to see a marketplace in such a mess with the recent cases of cholera outbreak, and therefore pleads with the government to correct the situation. “It is really a matter of great concern, especially, now that there is an upsurge of cholera, and therefore I am pleading with the government to put the place in a good shape.”
When contacted, the environmental supervisor at the Kaneshie market, Joseph Fianko, said people have been contracted to sweep the entire market as early as 4am every day.
Besides that they tidy up the fish and meat rooms every day. However, the market is gradually being taken over by garbage. He said his outfit is embarking on an education programme for the market men and women to adopt hygienic practices and style of living. “We are educating them that whenever they eat, they should put them into dustbins instead of keeping the place unkempt,” he said.
