The Member of Parliament for South Tongu, Koblah Mensah Woyome is calling on his fellow politicians to respect the results of the 2010 population and housing census as declared by the Government Statistician, Dr. Grace Badiako.
Mr. Woyome says the Ghana Statistical Service is an independent institution and must be allowed to do its constitutionally mandated work without intimidation.
The MP was commenting on the apparent stand-off between the opposition New Patriotic Party and the ruling National Democratic Congress, over the intercensal growth rates in the Ashanti and Volta regions.
According to the provisional results declared by the GSS on Thursday, the population in Ashanti grew by 30.8% as against 28.4% growth rate recorded by Volta. This figure has become the debating point between the two political divides.
While the NPP’s Deputy General Secretary Kwaku Agyenim Boateng says his party will meet to analyse seriously the figures announced by the GSS, his counterpart from the NDC, Kofi Adams, said the result is fair.
But Mr. Woyome said the Volta Region has seen a major boost in infrastructural development in recent years, which may have attracted many investors into the region, which he noted, could be one of the many reasons which may have caught the attention of other people to move to settle there.
