The Joint Traders Association (JTA) of Kantanmanto Market in the Greater Accra region has called on President Mills to caution Dr Alfred Vanderpuye, the Mayor of Accra against extending the railway line from 50ft to 100ft.
Kwadwo Ansong, Chairman of the Association, briefing the media, said if Dr Vanderpuye goes ahead to extend the railway lines from 50ft to 100ft, it will render 10,000 people jobless.
According to him, his outfit and the Ghana Railways Authority (GRA) agreed on 50 ft.
The chairman pointed out that his organization has been using the place since 1985, emphasizing that in 1997 the two parties (JTA and GRA) decided to extend the permit to 50 years. “Since then we have been working peaceful without any problem until Dr Vanderpuye popped out with this development, the mayor is determine to take our basic means from us, where do we go from here,” he asked
“We have been paying our taxes to contribute our quota to the development of the country, we are on our knees begging the government to let us maintain the old agreement which is 50ft so that we can take care of our families,” he added.
According to the organization, they have provided necessary information concerning monetary terms to GRA to ensure peaceful atmosphere to work. “We are pleading with the president and his officials to allow us to use the old agreement so that we can have a peaceful environment to work,” he stated.
