Mayibuye National Convenor Floyd Shivambu says South Africa is facing a dangerous moment of truth and must act swiftly to stop political interference and criminal collusion within law enforcement.
His comments come after KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, revealed that Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu interfered in sensitive investigations by disbanding the elite Political Killings Task Team.
“We commend Commissioner Mkhwanazi for his courage and integrity,” Shivambu said.
“His principled stand affirms that there are still patriots within the state apparatus committed to the rule of law and the protection of our democracy.”
Shivambu added that the time for silence is over. “The responsibility now lies with the public, media, judiciary, and crucially President Ramaphosa, to take bold action and ensure that accountability triumphs over impunity,” he said.
Mayibuye Consultation Process (MCP) spokesperson Sidney Baloyi expressed alarm, saying the Commissioner’s allegations “paint a deeply disturbing picture of a compromised national security apparatus.” According to Baloyi, “Senior political and police officials are allegedly colluding with criminal syndicates to obstruct investigations, derail justice, and protect those responsible for political assassinations.”
Baloyi was direct in his criticism of the Minister of Police. “Even more alarming is the direct claim that the Minister of Police himself may be part of these criminal networks,” he said.
The MCP is calling for the immediate dismissal of Mchunu by President Cyril Ramaphosa. “Given the serious allegations that implicate him in protecting criminals and obstructing justice, the President has no choice but to act decisively,” said Baloyi.
In addition to the minister’s removal, the MCP is demanding the arrest of all implicated individuals, including Mchunu, Lieutenant General Sibiya, and Brown Mokgotsi.
“Swift action by law enforcement agencies is non-negotiable if we are to restore public confidence.”
He also called for the immediate reinstatement of the disbanded Political Killings Task Team under independent oversight. “
There must be a credible, functioning unit to investigate political killings, free from interference,” he said.
The MCP further wants Parliament to establish a full Inquiry alongside a Judicial Commission to investigate the depth of political interference in the SAPS and the extent of criminal infiltration in law enforcement and intelligence structures.
Baloyi said: “We also demand immediate protection and legal support for whistleblowers such as Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi and others prepared to expose corruption within the state.”
Baloyi warned, “South Africa must not descend into a mafia state where Cabinet Ministers shield criminals and intelligence operations are compromised for political convenience.”
Both Shivambu and the Mayibuye leadership insist that the next move lies with President Ramaphosa. “Accountability must triumph over impunity.”
Shivambu also announced new leadership roles within the movement’s communications structure.

Shivambu noted that the National Consultation Team (NCT) meeting held on July 5 and 6, 2025 affirmed the full participation rights of both Spokespersons in the leadership structures of the Mayibuye Consultation Process.
The outcomes of this meeting will be officially released on Tuesday, July 8. 2025.
