Emergency Medical Services (EMS) firefighting crews have mobilised to respond to a fire incident at South African Breweries (SAB) in Soweto.
“The blaze reportedly began when grass in a nearby field caught fire. This soon spread quickly and ignited storage crates on the premises,” said the Media Liaison Officer, EMS City of Joburg, Xolile Khumalo, in a statement released on Thursday.
As of now, there have been no reported injuries, and emergency teams are actively working to contain the fire.
Witnesses and users on social media reported seeing thick plumes of smoke rising from the brewery, which prompted immediate concern among locals about the potential devastation.
An EMS spokesperson reiterated the urgency of the situation, urging residents to steer clear of the area to ensure their safety and to allow emergency services to operate without hindrance.
At this stage, the cause of the fire remains unclear, and investigations will likely follow to determine the origin of the blaze.
The fire comes only a week after the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture attended the media briefing to celebrate 130 years of SAB and the influence it has on sports and the brands that bring them together.
