Earlier today South Africa’s under-23 side took on Congo Brazzaville’s under-23 in the first leg of the 2023 CAF Olympic qualifiers at Dobsonville Stadium in Dobsonville, Soweto, Gauteng, as both teams looked to take an edge going into the second leg this upcoming weekend in Congo.
South Africa’s coach named a surprise starting eleven that saw Kaizer Chiefs Football Club’s star attacker, Mduduzi Shabalala start on the bench despite his recent form, which soon backfired as the young South Africans went into the break trailing after Congo took the lead in the 44th minute after a lapse in the South African’s defence.
With South Africa pushing hard for an equaliser Notwane introduced Shabalala in the 55th minute, and he quickly made a difference as he provided his teammate, Thapelo Maseko with one chance which he missed before 14 minutes later Shabalala provided Maseko with another chance took with both hands to make the match all square.
