Big Brother Mzansi is rumored to be returning to South African television soon after five turbulent seasons and an even longer hiatus. The final season of Big Brother Mzansi aired in 2015 and was abruptly canceled after a participant was allegedly sexually abused by a housemate.
This week, entertainment writer Phil Mphela broke the news on Twitter, causing the reality show to trend. Since then, Twitter has been debating what would make the next season a success, with some suggesting regular people appear on the show instead of celebrities and influencers, as well as a few other intriguing ideas like Savanna-sponsored Saturday night parties and Katlego Maboe as the new season’s host.
We decided to go down memory lane and see where the winners of Big Brother South Africa 1 & 2, Big Brother Mzansi: Secrets, and Big Brother Mzansi: Double Trouble are now.
1. Big Brother South Africa 1 winner Ferdinand Rabie:
Ferdinand Rabie was the first South African Big Brother winner in 2001. Ferdi’s television career lasted for a brief time when he joined Laugh Out Loud in 2005 as a prankster and returned for the second season in a larger capacity. Ferdinand’s Tours & Adventures and Strongman Events are Ferdi’s two profitable businesses.
2. Big Brother South Africa 2 winner Richard Cawood:
Richard Cawood, a farmer and professional hunter from the Eastern Cape, was the second South African to win the Big Brother million in 2002. With Jacqueline Brits from Cape Town and Puledi Manamela from Limpopo, he was the last male standing in the Big Brother house. Cawood went on to have a successful career outside of the spotlight, and currently owns Richard Cawood Investments, which specializes in a wide range of investment opportunities.
3. Big Brother Mzansi: Secrets winner Mandla Hlatshwayo:
Mandla Hlatshwayo, a physical trainer and owner of a Sebokeng Spaza shop, won Big Brother Mzansi: Secrets in 2014, and his career took off after that.
