Luckily for everyone that was at the place, serious injuries were reported and everyone managed to get out unharmed.
According to Ameera Jappie, who was there when it all happened, the fire started when the ceiling, which is made from artificial grass was set alight by sparks from party flares.
She added that, “It was chaos. It was really bad, everything caught alight so fast, and no one could stop it”.
Later on during that night, the eatery issued a brief statement on Instagram which read: “We would like to inform everyone that there has been an unfortunate event tonight at The Greenhouse and that everyone is safe and OK. We would like to thank the heroes and emergency services who helped us tonight.”
One of he people that was there named Jappie said she, her sister and cousin were sitting outside the eatery as it was packed with no tables available inside.
She went to tell media that, “Everyone was having a ‘lekker jol’, dancing, drinking and all. My sister had gone to the toilet just before. At about 10.30pm. Everyone stood up and looked behind and inside. There was a small flame that had started inside the place. At this time she still had not noticed that her sister was still inside the toilet.”
People kept on trying to out off the flame and the live band that was playing had stopped. The flame kept getting bigger and bigger and people started running towards the door.
When I realized my sister was still in the toilet, I ran inside to attempt to find her. People were pushing me out because everyone was trying to get out. The bouncer at the club was also informed of the sister who was still in the toilet, they searched for her but did not find her.
She said they later found her sister outside as she had used the toilet at the mall.
