How to format text in WhatsApp

Another way to format the text in WhatsApp is to use the options provided by Android and iOS (iPhone) to modify the message. Just select the desired word or phrase and tap the text edit icon to choose bold, italic, strikethrough or monospace.

  1. On Android:
  2. Tap and hold on the phrase or text;
  3. Select “Bold” or “Italics”;
  4. Tap the three dots (“More”) button to select “Strikethrough” or “Monospace”;

Ready. Now just send the message.

  3. U”;
  4. Select “Bold”, “Italics”, “Strikethrough” or “Monospace”;

Submit your message.

Can I format text on WhatsApp Web or Desktop?

Yes. However, formatting only works by the commands described at the beginning of the tutorial. So, if you want to write in bold, you’ll need to use asterisks between each sentence or word; in italics, the Underline sign; and so on.

Can I format more than one word or the entire sentence?

You can change the style of a single word or entire sentences, as long as you start and end the command with the corresponding symbol for each format.

An example: *Kenyannews*: _technology for those_ who understand. In this case, we used bold in the first word, italic in the following three and the last one was left unformatted.

Can I use bold, italic and strikethrough in the same word?

Yes. Again, just use the commands for each format. Example: Kenyannews becomes *_~Kenyannews*_~. Or use the edit button after selecting the word.
