Liverpool FC vs Tottenham Hotspur: Result, Ratings and Quotes

Result

A crunch showdown between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur this evening saw the spoils shared, on the back of a superbly-contested 90 minutes.

The clash, of course, represented a key one in the race for both the title and Champions League football in the Premier League, with the evening’s hosts hunting down Manchester City at the division’s summit, and Spurs desperate to close the gap on north London rivals Arsenal ahead of the Gunners’ meeting with Leeds on Sunday.

And it was the latter who took a shock lead on Merseyside early in the 2nd-half, when Ryan Sessegnon’s pull-back across the face of goal was slotted home by the in-form Son Heung-min:

Liverpool, though, as so often proves the case, simply refused to be beaten, ultimately levelling things up 15 minutes from time when Luis Diaz’s effort from distance found the bottom corner courtesy of a hefty deflection off Rodrigo Bentancur:

From here, both sides had chances to win it, but could have had few complaints upon the final whistle sounding with the scoreline at a goal apiece.

Player Ratings

Liverpool

Alisson – 5.5 – Had little to do other than picking the ball out of his net early in the 2nd-half. Could do nothing to keep out Son’s strike.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 5 –  One particular intervention early in the action prevented what could so easily have been a Tottenham opener. Allowed Harry Kane far too much space in the lead up to the game’s opener, though. Disappointing with his delivery.

Ibrahima Konate – 6.5 – Another fine display from Liverpool’s up-and-coming defensive stalwart, who continues to look a star in the making for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Virgil van Dijk – 6  – Unlucky to see a first-half header come back off the crossbar. Seldom troubled defensively.

Andy Robertson – 5.5 – Solid if unspectacular, before being hooked shortly after the hour mark as Liverpool went in search of an equaliser.

Fabinho – 5.5 – Finally booked ten minutes from time on the back of a series of ‘professional’ fouls. Otherwise a quiet night for the Reds’ midfield enforcer.

Jordan Henderson – 6 – Did well to link the hosts’ midfield to attack before being hauled off 25 minutes from time.

Thiago Alcantara – 7.5  – Ran the show throughout lengthy stretches from his berth in the middle of the park, Thiago was the best player on the pitch for much of the evening.

Mo Salah – 4.5 – A disappointing showing from Liverpool’s main man down the right. Simply not his lethal self in and around the penalty area.

Luis Diaz – 7 – A threat early on, Diaz’s influence waned as proceedings carried on before he exploded back into life in decisive fashion to level the score 15 minutes from time.

Sadio Mane – 5.5 – One of his less impactful performances of late, Mane was, in truth, afforded little service in and around the away side’s goal.

Substitutes

Diogo Jota – 4.5 – Struggled to add his intended impetus to Liverpool’s frontline. A quiet cameo.

Kostas Tsimikas – 5 – Did little to justify his introduction in place of Robertson. Booked shortly after entering the fray.

Naby Keita – N/A

Tottenham Hotspur

Hugo Lloris – 6 – Made some crucial saves to keep Liverpool at bay prior to the interval, but was left with little chance in keeping out Diaz’s deflected leveller.

Cristian Romero –  6.5 – Lucky not to see one of his misplaced passes culminate in a Liverpool opener during the first-half, but more than made up for it with a commanding 45 minutes beyond the interval.

Eric Dier – 6.5 – Confident and unerring, Dier continues to look a man transformed at the back.

Ben Davies – 7 – In truth, all of Spurs’ back-three defended superbly this evening, making it difficult to separate them when it comes to match ratings. Davies was afforded Sky Sports’ Man of the Match award.

Rodrigo Bentancur – 5.5 – Struggled badly to deal with the pace of the game during the first-half, but looked much improved after the break. Still at times too lax in possession.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 6 – Kept things ticking over in the middle of the park in typically no-nonsense fashion.

Emerson Royal – 7.5  – Perhaps his finest individual display in a Tottenham shirt, Emerson was excellent on both sides of the ball at Anfield.

Ryan Sessegnon – 6.5 – Had struggled to get involved on the attacking side of the ball, before teeing up Son’s opener. Grew into the clash from here, and dealt well with the threat of Mo Salah down Spurs’ left.

Dejan Kulusevski – 6.5  – The visitors’ only real outlet early on, Kulusevski did superbly well to keep possession and launch counter-attacks when afforded the opportunity.

Son Heung-min – 7 – Broke the deadlock with a simple finish from close range, and looked a threat on the break throughout. Now just two goals adrift of Mo Salah in the Golden Boot race.

Harry Kane – 6 – Played a crucial role in setting up his side’s go-ahead goal. Worked tirelessly when out of possession, too. A captain’s display.

Substitutes

Davinson Sanchez – 5 – Brought on late in the action to aid Tottenham’s efforts to see out a draw, and did precisely that.

Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League but that’s a draw that will feel like a defeat for these players. They now need Manchester City to lose one of their games to take the title to goal difference – it looks a big ask from here.
