MMA star Alex Volkanovski called Nick Kyrgios “a legend” after the Australian tennis star was spotted repping a Volkanovski shirt during a practice at US Open. Volkanovski, an Australian mixed martial artist star, is the reigning UFC Featherweight champion.

Just before the US Open, Kyrgios showed his respect and appreciation for fellow compatriot Volkanovski. After seeing Kyrgios’ gesture, Volkanovski responded on Twitter. “What a legend Nick Kyrgios! (praying emoji),” Volkanovski tweeted.

Kyrgios aiming a big US Open run

Kyrgios, 27, reached his first Grand Slam final at this past Wimbledon.

Now, he is viewed as a title contender at the US Open. Kyrgios has played lots of quality tennis throughout the summer and has beaten some of the biggest names of the game. But playing lots of tennis has negative sides as well as Kyrgios has admitted to feeling mentally and physically exhausted.

“I’m exhausted, that’s for sure,” Kyrgios said. “After Wimbledon, and Washington, and everything, I haven’t been able to go home and enjoy it with my family and just take a breath. So I’m extremely exhausted.

I know that this is my last stop until I do get to go home, so I do have an eye on that. No other tennis players have to deal with that, apart from Australians. This is my last little trip and I get to go home. So that’s all I’m thinking about”.

After the US Open, Kyrgios plans to return to Australia. For the first time in his career, Kyrgios won’t be competing at the Laver Cup, which starts in late September. Kyrgios has been on the road for several months now and he hasn’t been able to see his mother, who is not really doing well with his health.

At the US Open, Kyrgios has never reached the second week. But Kyrgios is enjoying the season of his life and he can definitely make some noise at Flushing Meadows for the first time in his career.
