harlton have named former Bristol City and Oldham boss Dean Holden as their new manager, heralding a major shake-up at the top of the club.

Also arriving following Tuesday’s announcement is former Brentford boss Andy Scott as the new technical director.

The Addicks have been without a head coach since Ben Garner was sacked earlier in December, less than six months after he was appointed as successor to club legend Johnnie Jackson.

Holden has had limited success and experience as a manager, having taken charge of just 51 League matches across the course of his career, but is well regarded as a coach and most recently served as assistant to Michael O’Neill at Stoke before briefly standing as caretaker manager following his departure.

The 43-year-old will be tasked with turning around the fortunes of a club in turmoil, with Charlton just four points above the relegation zone and on a run of six games without a win in League One.

There is growing dissent from fans over owner Thomas Sandgaard’s running of the club, with Holden set to become Charlton’s fifth permanent manager since the takeover of September 2020.

It is thought that interim boss Anthony Hayes will remain in charge for Wednesday night’s meeting with top-flight Brighton in the last-16 of the Carabao Cup, before Holden takes over in time for the Boxing Day visit of Peterborough.
