The goalless draw against Croatia in Belgium’s final Group F match was not enough for Roberto Martinez’s side as they crashed out, with Morocco going through as surprise group winners.
Germany beat Costa Rica 4-2 later on Thursday but still fell early for the second World Cup in a row thanks to Japan’s shock comeback against Spain that saw them finish at the summit of Group E.
A 2-0 win for Argentina over Poland was enough for them to top Group C on Wednesday, while Robert Lewandowski and Co just about edged through on goal difference.
Australia sealed progress from Group D courtesy of a crucial victory over Denmark in which Mathew Leckie scored the only goal of the game on the hour mark. They will face Argentina in the last-16.
France were the first side through to the knockout stages, and will play Poland, while England have joined them and will face Senegal in the last-16 on Sunday night. Netherlands are also through as Group A winners, playing the USA next.
Portugal and Brazil have both guaranteed they will advance with a game to spare, meanwhile. They conclude their respective group campaigns on Friday.
