Mike Weir, the first left-handed golfer to win The Masters (in 2003), will lead the International Team in the 2024 Presidents Cup, which will return to play – as happened in 2007 – at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal.
It will therefore be a Canadian, in his country of origin, who will captain the international team (European players excluded) in the challenge to the USA. With Weir who will be called to a real feat: dragging his team to success after nine defeats in a row.

Five appearances as a player, with his debut coming in 2000. While in 2007, right at the Royal Montreal Golf Club – which in 2023 will celebrate 150 years of history – the Canadian got the satisfaction of overcoming Tiger Woods in the singles match. Michael Richard Weir or Mike Weir (born May 12, 1970 in Sarnia, Ontario) is a professional golfer from Canada.
He is the first Canadian golf professional to win a major championship: the 2003 Masters Tournament. Weir attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and turned pro in 1992 after graduating. He initially played on the Canadian tour and from 1998 on the US PGA Tour.
His first win on the PGA Tour was in his native country: the Air Canada Championship in Surrey (British Columbia) in 1999. In 2000 he won the last tournament of the tour, the World Golf Championship in Spain. He finished the year 6th on the Order of Merit and 21st in the world rankings.
That year he was a member of the international team for the Presidents Cup for the first time. In 2001, he won the PGA Tour Championship. He also finished second twice in other tournaments and reached the top ten of the world rankings.
He didn’t win in 2002, but in 2003 he scored three victories: the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and the Nissan Open in February, and his first major, the Masters in Augusta, Georgia, in April. He defeated Len Mattiace on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.
That year he also finished third in the US Open. In 2004 he won the Nissan Open again. He then had to wait three and a half years for another victory: the Fry’s Electronics Open in Arizona in October 2007. He was voted Canadian athlete of the year three times by the Canadian press (2000, 2001, 2003).
In 2007, he was awarded Canada’s highest civilian honor, the Order of Canada. Like Phil Mickelson, Mike Weir plays left-handed even though he is a right-hander. He had surgery on his elbow in 2010 and lost nearly two years as a result. Mike Weir is married to Bricia and has two daughters, Elle Marisa and Lili. They live in Sandy, Utah.
