In 1999, Valderrama Golf Club was ranked number 1 in continental Europe by Golf World magazine. While the 4th hole, La Cascada, is considered the signature hole of the course, more famous and notorious is the 17th hole, a par 5, with a heavily undulating, lightning fast green that slopes down to the water hazard in front.
Even Tiger Woods once putted his ball from the green into the water here – as happened at the Ryder Cup in 1997. On the other hand, the Spaniard Miguel Angel Jiménez made his legendary albatross there in the Volvo Masters in 1994 (he holed the second shot from over 200 meters).
There is a plaque on the 17th tee to commemorate this event. Thirteen years later, Graeme McDowell pulled off the same feat at the 2007 Volvo Masters.
