mma Raducanu gets her US Open defence up and running tonight as she looks to recreate last year’s incredible run.
The 19-year-old gets the defence of her title underway with a tricky first-round clash against France’s Alize Cornet on Tuesday, who ended Iga Swiatek’s long winning run earlier this summer at Wimbledon. Raducanu recently beat Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka in New York for the loss of a combined six games, and will be hoping to carry that form into New York.
Cameron Norrie continues to establish himself as one of the most consistent players in the men’s game and he opened up with a comfortable win over Benoit Paire, who will once again face questions over the level of effort he put in.
The Frenchman lost the first and third sets 6-0, though did at least push the British number one to a tie-break in between those collapses.
Dan Evans, seeded 20th, got the better Jiri Vesely, making it three British men in the second round. Evans showed good signs at the Canadian Open earlier this month and he cruised past Vesely in routine fashion.
Earlier in the week, it was a strong first day for the Brits in New York, with Andy Murray, Jack Draper and Harriet Dart all making it through to the second round.
Dart was particularly impressive in securing a battling victory over tenth seed Daria Kasatkina for what was a career-best win.
