American radio host Clay Travis has praised “woke athlete” Novak Djokovic for sticking up to his principles even if that is affecting his career and success. Djokovic, 35, hasn’t been vaccinated against COVID-19 and that’s why he is set to miss his second Grand Slam of the season.
At the start of the 2022 season, Djokovic wasn’t allowed to participate at the Australian Open because of his vaccination status. This Thursday, Djokovic pulled out of the US Open. Djokovic wasn’t allowed to enter the United States as an unvaccinated foreigner.
Travis: Djokovic did something that no woke athlete has done
“Novak Djokovic gave up a chance at two majors he would have been favored to win over his refusal to get the useless covid shot,” Travis said, via Sportskeeda.
“He actually gave up something by standing on principle, something you can’t say about any woke athlete over the past decade. Djokovic would have been the favorite at the Australian Open and he would have been the favorite at the US Open, and at minimum, he’s probably likely to have won at least one of those tournaments.
And there would have been a good chance based on the way he’s been playing, that he would win both, which would have made him the greatest tennis player in men’s tennis history, and maybe he could end up with more majors than any man or woman.
it’s not crazy to think that that would end up being the result. Instead, he has stood on principle over the benefit.”

Following Djokovic’s US Open withdrawal, Rafael Nadal is now guaranteed to enter 2023 with the most Grand Slams.
At Flushing Meadows, Nadal will be aiming to win bhis 23rd Grand Slam and again go up by two Majors ahead of Djokovic. Meanwhile, Djokovic is now facing uncertainty regarding his Australian Open participation. After being deported from Australia, Djokovic was handed a three-year ban from entering the country.
