Borna Coric may be coming off the biggest title of his career but he is entering the US Open without any expectations. Last week, Coric put up a great week of tennis to win his first Masters title in Cincinnati. En route to winning Cincinnati, Coric stunned record 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal.

Coric’s run to the Cincinnati also included wins over Lorenzo Musetti, Roberto Bautista Agut, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Cameron Norrie and Stefanos Tsitsipas. After beating several top-10 players en route to the Cincinnati title, some would think that Coric would set his eyes on the US Open title.

Coric on why he is entering the US Open without any expectations

“To be honest, I have none, because it happened many times in my career that I experienced a low after a big result. It is not that I became cocky, I was never the arrogant type, but simply put, expectations and wishes become way higher, then the bubble bursts and it does not turn out well.

I do not like that feeling, so I am taking it one match at a time, although I know it sounds like a cliche. So, my goal is just to be healthy and to prepare well for New York,” Coric told Tennis Majors. Coric was ranked just outside the top-150 during his Cincinnati.

Now he is the 29th player in the world and set to be seeded at the US Open. But Coric is aware that his rivals will now likely be more motivated to beat him following his great Cincinnati run. “Yes, I won a big title, I am very pleased and proud, but we move on.

It does not mean much for the future, on the contrary, some players will probably be more eager to beat me now compared to two weeks ago,” Coric explained. Coric’s best US Open result came in 2020, when he reached the quarterfinal before losing to Alexander Zverev.
