LIV Golf debut for Henrik Stenson (former captain of the Europe team at the Ryder Cup 2023), Jason Kokrak, Charles Howell III and Paul Casey.
Among the stars there are also – along with Johnson and DeChambeau – Brooks Koepka, Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson. In 2019, there were discussions to start the Premier Golf League (PGL) in order to compete with the US PGA Tour.
The PGA was quick to announce that any golfer signing a contract with the new golf organization would be immediately suspended and possibly banned from their golf tournaments. The idea of PGL was presented to PIF, who thought the idea was interesting, but PIF would rather start its own golf organization.
Parts of the PGL joined the PIF and the golf organization was officially launched in 2021. PIF wanted a household name as CEO of the golf organization and offered Jack Nicklaus more than US$100 million to lead LIV, but Nicklaus turned it down.
They then turned their eyes to Greg Norman, who was named CEO on October 29. On March 17, 2022, LIV and Norman announced that the first season would be called the 2022 LIV Golf Invitational Series and have $255 million in total prize money, to be paid out over eight golf tournaments.
The top seven have $20 million in individual prize money each. Another five million dollars will be distributed between the top three teams after each competition. $30 million to be divided individually among the top three golfers after the seven golf tournaments have been played.
Finally, $50 million will be awarded at the final golf tournament, which is a team competition.[9] On June 25, 2022, the DP World Tour announced that all players playing for LIV for the 2022 season would be suspended and fined $100,000 each, the PGA Tour had previously also warned golfers of suspensions if they played that season for LIV.
In June 2022, LIV announced that for the 2023 season, the season will be called the LIV Golf League and have a league format with standings and 14 golf tournaments where 48 contracted golfers play. However, the golfers must still be part of teams and led by a team captain, who is also responsible for selecting three contracted golfers for his team.
