Daria Kasatkina, who recently came out as gay in an interview, shields s*xual minorities from eventual attacks coming from Putin because the Russian state does not want to divide people during war, according to Igor Kochetkov, a representant of the LGBT Network recently featured in The Guardian.
Kochetkov described Kasatkina’s public gay reveal as “monumental” while commenting the gesture. “This is the first time in our history that an undisputed sports star of Kasatkina’s stature has come out.
And in Putin’s Russia sport is always political. The Kremlin strives for complete unity in society during the war. If they see that an attack on s*xual minorities is going to stir heated discussion and debate, they will think twice before launching one.
That’s why Kasatkina’s coming out has the actual power to prevent new homophobic campaigns,” Kochetkov said per The Guardian.
Kasatkina revealed she has a girlfriend
Daria Kasatkina, a Russian tennis player, has announced that she is homos*xual and that she is in a relationship with a partner.
Kasatkina, 25, revealed her s*xual orientation for the first time in public during an interview with Russian blogger Vitya Kravchenko. When asked directly if she was in a relationship with a girlfriend, Kasatkina said yes.
“Yes, [I currently have a girlfriend],” Kasatkina admitted. Kasatkina, who is currently the top-ranked Russian female player, suggested she felt relieved and at peace after coming out. “Living in the closet is impossible.
Not for the long run, no. It is too hard. It is pointless, you will be completely focused on that until you choose to come out. Of course, it is up to you to decide how to do it and how much you tell,” Kasatkina said. “Living in peace with yourself is the only thing that matters, and f— everyone else.”
