Paul Casey, biography
The Briton, number 26 in the world, will be among the protagonists of the third event of 2022 of the Arab Super League, which will be played from 29 to 31 July at Trump National Golf Club, in New Jersey.
Paul Alexander Casey (Cheltenham, 21 July 1977) is a British golfer, mainly active on the PGA and European Tour. After a very successful amateur career, Casey turned professional in 2000 and qualified for the 2001 European Tour.
Already in his fifth tournament he achieved a second place and in his eleventh appearance he won the traditional Gleneagles Scottish PGA Championship. Casey ended the season 22nd on the money list and was awarded the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award (Best Rookie).
After a disappointing second season, he won two tournaments in 2003 and ended up sixth in the rankings. The following year Casey didn’t win a tournament, but he was a member of the victorious European Ryder Cup team and won the WGC World Cup in Seville for England with his partner Luke Donald.
In addition, Casey took a highly regarded 6th place at the Masters in Augusta. Qualified for the PGA TOUR as a result of these successes, he also began playing there in 2005. However, there was no success and so Casey concentrated more on the European Tour, where he was able to celebrate another tournament victory at the end of 2005, which is already counted for the 2006 season, which he followed up with another one at the Johnnie Walker Championship in Gleneagles in June 2006 .
In September, Casey won the storied HSBC World Match Play Championship against a world class field of Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen etc. and secured the highest prize money in professional golf to date at £1m.
In the final he defeated the American Shaun Micheel by the largest margin in the 42-year history of this event. A week later he was one of the most successful players on the European Ryder Cup team and also became the fifth player in the history of the competition to score a hole-in-one.
Casey only missed out on winning the European Tour Order of Merit 2006 by around €35,000 against the Irishman Pádraig Harrington in the very last tournament of the season, the Volvo Masters, for which he entered the tournament badly weakened by food poisoning.
After winning the high-quality BMW PGA Championship in May 2009, he achieved his best placing in the world golf rankings to date with 3rd place. The month before, Casey had won his first tournament on the PGA Tour, the Shell Houston Open. His coach is the renowned golf expert Peter Kostis, who is also the swing expert at the US broadcaster CBS Sports.
