Former world No. 1 Simona Halep delivered a great performance to progress into the Wimbledon last-16 and after the match said she is always confident in her abilities on grass. Halep, the 2019 Wimbledon champion, made a light work of Magdalena Frech as she saw off the Pole 6-4 6-1 to progress into the Wimledon round-of-16.
“I’m happy about it,” Halep said after her win, per the WTA website. “I’m trying just to play more offensive and I’m pushing myself to do that. So it was a good match. This tournament back in 2019, it’s been the best tournament of my career.
The matches that I played here were perfect. So I always have those memories and I have always have confidence that my game is pretty good on grass.” Halep now has a 3-0 head-to-head record versus Frech. For the second time this year, Halep and Frech met at a Grand Slam.
At the start of the season, Halep defeated Frech at the Australian Open 6-4 6-3. “It was not an easy match back in Australia,” Halep said about Frech. “She’s a good opponent. She’s a good player. It’s never easy to play with her.
She’s changing rhythm. She’s doing well. It was a good match.”
Halep routed Frech in straight sets
Halep got off to a fast start to the match as she claimed back-to-back breaks to open a 4-0 lead. Halep led 5-1 after the opening six games but failed to serve out for the first set in the eighth game as Frech was able to cut the deficit to 5-4.
However, Halep made no mistake when serving for the first set in the 10th game. After winning the first set, Halep broke Frech in the opening game of the second set but the Pole broke back in the second game to tie the set to one game apiece.
Blowing an early break didn’t impact Frech, who broke Frech in the next three games and won five games in a row to set up a round-of-16 match versus Paula Badosa.
