Rafael Nadal capturing Calendar Grand Slam in 2022 is ‘realistic goal’

Coach Carlos Moya says Rafael Nadal winning a Calendar Grand Slam is a “realistic goal” and admits Team Nadal would definitely love to achieve such a remarkable accomplishment. Nadal, 36, has won the opening two Grand Slams of the season and for the first time in his career he arrives to Wimbledon with a chance to winning a Calendar Grand Slam.

Nadal now owns a record 22 Grand Slam titles, while Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are tied on the second place with 20 Majors. “It is a realistic goal, right now he is the only one that can achieve it this year,” Moya told Eurosport.

“It is the first time in his career that he is in a position to achieve it, but we see it as something far away, it is only halfway. At the moment he doesn’t lose sleep, as a team few things keep us up at night and this is not one of them.

We have to go little by little, it is not something that we talk about, it is not a primary objective, although we are not going to give up on it”.

Moya warns Nadal can’t take any opponent for granted

Wimbledon is the Grand Slam where Nadal has had the most early exits at Grand Slams and Moya underlines the 36-year-old will have to take seriously every opponent he faces.

“At Wimbledon there can always be more surprises. Regardless of the player you get in those first rounds, what is dangerous is the type of opponent you get, you have to be careful with the sluggers. Now he has two important exhibition matches, my confidence in him for Wimbledon remains the highest.

He is perfectly suited to grass,” Moya added. Nadal is two-time Wimbledon champion, having won the tournament in 2008 and 2010. Nadal is set to make his first Wimbledon appearance since 2019. In 2019, Nadal reached the Wimbledon semifinal before losing to record eight-time Wimbledon champion Federer.
