Bianca Andreescu marched onward in her return to the tour, reaching the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Sunday with an upset over sixth seed Danielle Collins. The Canadian needed merely an hour and nine minutes to post a 6-1, 6-1 win over the American, the Australian Open finalist.

Andreescu won 58% of her first-serve points to Collins’ 48%, and 63% of her second-serve points to the latter’s 28%. The 2019 US Open winner saved five of the six break points she faced while converting six of the 10 break points she had on Collins’ serve.

Looking to move into the quarter-finals, Andreescu will play another American, the 12th seed Jessica Pegula. Pegula beat Kaia Kanepi in their second-round match, 6-3, 6-3 in 67 minutes. Daria Kasatkina maintained her clean record over Maria Sakkari as she pipped the fourth seed 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 55 minutes.

Entering the match, Kasatkina had carried a 3-0 lead in their head-to-head and although she seemed to have had a shaky start, she was able to break Sakkari’s game and convert the result in her favour.

Mutua Madrid Open: Sara Sorribes Tormo gets Naomi Osaka’s measure

In the third round, Kasatkina will take on Sara Sorribes Tormo.

The Spaniard ousted former world no. 1 Naomi Osaka in their round-of-64 meeting. Sorribes Tormo won 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 28 minutes. Osaka had 23 winners and 25 unforced errors to Sorribes Tormo’s three winners and unforced errors each but Tormo’s game kept her on the backfoot all the while.

Another former world no. 1, Garbine Muguruza also crashed out in the second round. Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina toppled the Spaniard, 6-3, 6-0 in an hour and 21 minutes. Kalinina will play ninth seed Emma Raducanu for a place in the quarters.

Raducanu beat Marta Kostyuk, 6-2, 6-1 in their round-of-64 match. Lastly, Jil Teichmann and Elena Rybakina will take on each other for a quarter-final berth at the Mutua Madrid Open. Teichmann backed up her first-round win over three-time Madrid winner Petra Kvitova with a 6-4, 6-4 upset over 17th seed Leylah Fernandez.

Meanwhile, in her second-round match, 16th seed Elena Rybakina came through against Katerina Siniakova after the latter retired while down 6-0, 1-0 in the proceedings. Photo Credit: Mutua Madrid Open Twitter
