While the 2022 World Cup will be organized for the first time in the fall (from November 21 to December 18 in Qatar), i.e. in the middle of the first part of the season, Serie A would like to organize a tournament in the United States with the 20 teams of the championship with the players not selected for the world tournament. A project announced by the managing director of the Italian League Luigi De Servo.
“We want to keep our players in shape while promoting ourselves in a market that we consider to be strategic. (…) The meetings would be scheduled to avoid any overlap with the World Cup calendar”, he explained in remarks collected by the Reuters news agency. The idea is currently on hold, pending the approval of the authorities concerned (FIFA, UEFA, CONCACAF, USSF, etc.).
