They are expected from the major golf clubs in the country and the West Africa sub-region. Their mission is to display their skills in the presence of the royalty as Egba indigenes celebrate the 14th coronation anniversary of their monarch, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo Okukenu IV, the Alake and paramount ruler of Egbaland.
The competition, which will hold at the Abeokuta Golf Club, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, is part of the larger celebration by a people, who has the means and also know how to blow their trumpets.
The event, which is being promoted by the club and sponsored by oil giants, Oando Plc, will feature no fewer than 100 amateur golfers from different golf clubs within the South-West zone, and other parts of the country.
Speaking on the programme of events, Club Captain, Adewale Adeogun emphasised that the golf course was in good shape for all golfers, adding that this edition would be better organised than the previous editions.
“We have received enormous support from Oando, being the main sponsor of the tournament, and it is anticipated that to whom much is given, much is expected.
“Over 100 golfers across Nigeria are taking part because of its uniqueness and has over the years become a sought after tournament due to the hospitality of the club.
“Our course is very unique and spectacular to play on. We have the best golf course in the whole of South-West, which is undulating, unlike others that are flat. Golfers always feel at home playing in Abeokuta, due to its peculiarity.
“The tournament is to honour and celebrate Kabiyesi, who also is an ardent golfer. It is his 14th coronation anniversary of ascending the throne.”
According to Adeogun, a tournament is an amateur event featuring men’s and ladies categories, veteran and super veterans in both categories.
“The tee-off is 7.00 a.m., but the Kabiyesi will perform the ceremonial tee-off in the morning while later in the evening, he will be around to present the giant trophy to the eventual winner as he does on yearly basis.
“Many traditional rulers and other dignitaries from government will grace the event.”
He listed the clubs that have already registered for the events as Ikoyi Club 1938, Ikeja Golf Club, MicCom Golf Club, Osun State, Tiger Golf Club, and Ibadan Golf Club.
“Also golfers from Ekiti, Kwara State and Sagamu are expected at the event, which has many fantastic trophies and other prizes to be won by golfers that distinguish themselves at the tournament on that day.”
