Nigeria’s number one female squash player, Yemisi Olatunji continued her surge to the top of the game when she beat her sister, Busayo Olatunji to win the women’s final of the SafeGuard Zimbabwe Open Squash Tournament, which ended in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe at the weekend.

The championship, which featured players from South Africa, Zambia, Swaziland, Nigeria and host country, Zimbabwe’s male and female teams, was organised to develop and expose African stars.

The Nigerian contingent could not come out victorious in the male category, as Idowu Emmakure was beaten in the third place game to finish fourth in the category, just as the men also settled for third place in the doubles event.

Speaking with The Guardian from Zimbabwe after wining the women squash final event, Yemisi Olatunji noted that her victory was based on hard work and determination to excel at every given opportunity.

“Squash players need more sponsors to excel. The Zimbabwe championship is another avenue to expose squash players in the country. If the private sector and government at the state and federal levels assist in sponsoring squash, Nigeria would be among the best in the world,” she said.

A total prize worth $5000 was given out to participants, who distinguished themselves at the championship, which started on August 3.
