Nontsetselo Magongo is the ninth wife of King Mswati III Nontsetselo Magongo is the ninth wife of King Mswati III

Nontsetselo Magongo was the only wife who accompanied King Mswati III of Eswatini during his recent state visit to Ghana to discuss pressing issues on the African continent.

Born in 1985, Magongo is 40 years old and is the king’s ninth wife. They married in 2002 when she was just 18, marking the beginning of their marital journey.

She hails from Eswatini and has Portuguese ancestry through family ties to Mozambique, giving her a mixed Swazi-Portuguese heritage.

Magongo is the mother of Prince Mcwasho Dlamini, her only child with the king since their marriage.

Her official title is Inkhosikati LaMagongo, which means “queen from the Magongo clan.”

She was one of several royal wives but was specifically selected to accompany the monarch on this official visit.

Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, was renamed in 2018 to distinguish it from Switzerland and to preserve the nation’s unique cultural identity.

Kufuor asks Akufo-Addo to apologise to Ghanaians – Arthur Kennedy reveals

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor (L) and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo (R)
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor (L) and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo (R)

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Kobina Arthur Kennedy, has disclosed that former President John Agyekum Kufuor has advised ex-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to apologise to Ghanaians for the economic hardship and governance failures that characterized his administration.

Speaking in an interview on TV3 on Saturday, June 28,2025, Arthur Kennedy stated that he picked this information “from the grapevine” and strongly endorsed the call for an apology from the former president.

“I have heard from the grapevine that President Kufuor has suggested to President Akufo-Addo to apologise to Ghanaians. This is advice I agree with. He must apologise,” Dr. Arthur Kennedy said.

The former NPP presidential aspirant made the comment during a panel discussion on the party’s upcoming internal elections.

He criticized the Akufo-Addo administration for fostering a culture of impunity, corruption, arrogance of power, and economic hardship.

“There was impunity; there was corruption. There was arrogance of power and there was hardship,” he lamented.

Arthur Kennedy’s remarks came in the wake of public concerns raised by former President Kufuor at the inauguration of the New Patriotic Party’s Patriotic Institute.

During the event, Kufuor questioned the NPP’s declining fortunes since 2016.

“How come our fortunes have been dwindling since 2016, 2020, and now our current state?” the former president asked.

In response, Arthur Kennedy attributed the party’s waning popularity to what he noted as poor governance and the perceived indifference of the Akufo-Addo administration regarding the sufferings of Ghanaians.

“The electorate endured all that and decided to give them the sack during the election,” he asserted.

Policy implementation gap, lax enforcement worsen plastic crisis

0

Panellists at the just-ended Environmental Sustainability Summit 2025 concurred that the precarious plastic pollution situation in Ghana continues to worsen due to a disjoint between policy and its implementation and lack commitment to promoting investments in viable alternatives.

As the country grapples with plastic pollution and seeks to advance circular economy practices, the panellists warned that progress is being hampered by a disconnect between policy and implementation, as well as a gap between academia and practical application – challenges largely attributed to lack of reliable data for effective planning.

Ghana generates 1.1 million tonnes of plastic waste each year.

Estimates show that over 50 percent of this waste remains uncollected and as low as 9 percent is recycled.

This waste ends up on the streets – clogging drains causing floods, contaminating fisheries and causing health issues.

According to the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, plastic waste costs the economy a whopping US$6billion annually, which represents about 11 percent of Ghana’s GDP.

The Director-Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies, University of Ghana, Prof. Chris Gordon argued that despite the presence of national plastic management policies and an action plan road map – which he played a pivotal role in formulating – Ghana is drowning in plastic waste because it fails to implement solutions, setting the tone for a passionate debate.

“We have all the plans, we have all the policies. The real issue is implementation,” Prof. Gordon stated, adding that “academia and policymakers are speaking different languages.”

He therefore called for simplified communication devoid of technical jargons that alienate and preclude the understanding of policymakers and people in our communities.

“Environmental sanitation policy does not talk about waste, it says ‘MINT’ – Materials in Transition. We need knowledge brokerage,” he said, stressing that complex research findings should be repackaged for practical use.

Despite the absence of reliable data, especially on the use of single-use plastics, Prof. Gordon claims that we consume about 30 million sachets of water daily in Accra, considering the city’s burgeoning population which now stands at about 5 million.

“We need policies backed by evidence,” he noted, emphasising the importance of reliable figures to guide policy and track implementation efficiency.

A youth activist at Thinking Minds Ghana, Nana Akosua Korang Agyare, urged support for grassroots youth innovation to improve visibility and effect change.

“We have the skills and the knowledge. But we need funding, we need visibility.”

She called for tailored, community-specific support rather than top-down, one-size-fits-all approaches to ensure efficiency.

Prof. Gordon echoed similar sentiments: “We need to catch them young,” Gordon urged.

He further noted the need for behavioural change to tackle the plastic pollution menace.

He therefore passed the mantle down to the younger generation:

“I say to my students, it is your problem. You have to come with the innovation to fix it because you are the people who have to live with it,” he said

The researcher criticised the divide between social and natural sciences in tackling what he called a societal “mental problem”.

“Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is insanity.”

Representing Jospong Group – the largest waste management company in Ghana – Rev. Dr. Glenn Kwabena Gyimah, General Manager-Jospong Green Transition Office, spoke at length about his outfit’s commitment to decentralised and community-based recycling models to improve the situation in both urban and rural Ghana.

However, the engineer highlighted significant barriers to private participation in Ghana’s waste management; including critical financing challenges and difficulty in formalising the massive informal waste sector.

Dr. Eric Boachie Yiadom from Green Vista expressed concern about the investment climate.

He argued that policy inconsistency and lack of government commitment create undue political risks.

“If an investor brings cars, builds capacity and then the contract is suddenly cancelled, what do they do? This tells investors the political risk is too high,” he noted, alluding to government’s failure to renew Jospong’s contract with YEA.

However, he concurred with Edward Debrah, a Chartered Environmentalist, on the need for incentives like tax breaks for recyclers or importers of biodegradable alternatives, while disincentivizing the use of single-use shopping bags by selling them to customers instead of the usual free after purchase.

Debrah bemoaned the enforcement culture in Ghana, linking it to a broader development paradox: “A white man once asked me: your country has almost everything, why are you not developed? We have the laws. The challenge has always been enforcing those laws”.

He advocated simplified, translated regulations and efficient regulatory oversight to ensure compliance, while contrasting it with the strict Health and Safety Executive (HSE) enforcement he witnessed in the UK.

“We see nice speeches, best practices from elsewhere. Then we come home and catch ‘yawa’ [trouble]. We are not enforcing anything.”

The Environmental Sustainability Summit 2025 was organised by the Business and Financial Times on the theme ‘Ending plastic waste in Ghana: A sustainable future for all’.

‘I’m a village champion, I’ve gone without food and worked on farms before’ – Dr Hanna Bisiw-Kotei

0

Dr Hanna Bisiw-Kotei has revealed that she was raised in a village Dr Hanna Bisiw-Kotei has revealed that she was raised in a village

The Administrator of the Mineral Development Fund (MDF), Dr Hanna Louisa Bisiw-Kotei, has revealed that she grew up in a rural community where she worked on farms and sometimes went without food for days.

Sharing her personal story, she explained that she fully understands the realities of village life, including hardships such as walking long distances, fetching water from streams, and enduring hunger.

“I’ve always told people that when I say I’m a village champion, it’s not a joke. I grew up in a village. There’s no aspect of village life that I haven’t experienced as a village child. I’ve walked barefoot, I’ve worn torn underwear, I’ve had lice and nits stuck in my hair. I’ve walked long distances and gone without food before,” she recounted.

“I’ve fetched water from streams, and I was given an opportunity. That’s why I’m here today. It’s not because of marriage or because I’m a superhuman being. No. It’s because God used someone to pick me up from the gutters and clean me up. That’s why I’m here today,” Dr Bisiw-Kotei said in comments shared by Daily Graphic on X.

She also emphasised that her fight against illegal mining is a personal mission to protect the environment and ensure that rural communities, especially children, are not deprived of a healthy future.

“A river has been destroyed. The forest has been destroyed, all around the school. The fear and insecurity these children and teachers face while passing through such areas will affect their concentration. How do you expect such a child to grow up and fulfill their God-given potential? So, for me, this is a call to duty,” she added.

IEA urges President Mahama not to extend Tullow Petroleum Agreement

0

The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR)

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has urged President John Dramani Mahama not to extend the Tullow Petroleum’s Agreement with Ghana.

It said the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Government of Ghana to extend the Petroleum Licenses of Tullow Oil and its Partners until 2040, lacked good faith, transparency, probity and accountability.

In a press statement, the IEA said: “The IEA considers this decision to lack good faith, transparency, probity and accountability and to be starkly at odds with the government’s own commitment to reset and strengthen governance of the extractive sector.”

The IEA said it was public record that Tullow’s operational relationship with Ghana had been riddled with challenges, including a series of high-profile international arbitration disputes that cast a shadow of doubt over the existing Petroleum Agreement.

“A notable instance occurred when the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) assessed a Branch Profit Remittance Tax (BPRT) liability of USD 320 million against Tullow for the period 2012-2016. following a thorough audit. Tullow refused to comply and challenged the claim through international arbitration,” it said.

The Institute said in the ensuing proceedings under the terms of the Petroleum Agreement, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in London ruled in favour of Tullow, where the London-based ICC held that Tullow was not liable to pay the USD 320 million tax liability.

It said the ICC further directed Ghana to pay substantial legal and arbitration-related costs, including GBP 1,946,589.44, USD 294,228.72, and USD 574,000.00 in tribunal and ICC fees with interest, accruing at 5% per annum until payment was made in full.

“The IEA is equally alarmed about another tax dispute in which Tullow has refused to pay and is contesting an additional GRA-assessed tax liability of USD 387 million, based on disallowed interest deductions from 2010 to 2020. Once again, Tullow has opted for arbitration at the ICC rather than settling the assessed amount,” it said.

The Institute said in light of the unresolved and recurring issues, Government must immediately suspend the ongoing process to extend Tullow’s petroleum licenses-originally due to expire in 2036.

It said petroleum is a depletable national asset and any extension and extraction must be preceded by a comprehensive and strategic review and restructuring of the existing agreement to ensure alignment with Ghana’s long-term development goals.

The IEA said the existing colonial-era contract should be thoroughly reviewed and restructured into a service contract, akin to those in Norway, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Qatar, Oman and Abu Dhabi where contracts controls were vested in the state while leveraging private sector expertise.

It said the United Kingdom, led by the private sector and Norway by the state, offered valuable lessons as both began offshore oil exploration in the North Sea Basin in the 1960s and had produced similar volumes of oil-approximately 42.8 billion barrels for the UK and 40 billion barrels for Norway.

“Despite similar geology and identical resource base and production levels, by 2014, the UK earned only USD 11 per barrel, while Norway earned USD 29.8 per barrel-nearly three times as much. Total revenues stood at USD 470 billion for the UK and USD 1.197 trillion for Norway. Norway further invested these proceeds into a sovereign wealth fund now valued at over USD 1.4 trillion, the largest in the world,” the IEA said.

Eswatini Princess and Otumfuo’s Son Capture Attention with Their Dance Moves at the Manhyia Banquet

0

Otumfuo’s son, Nana Kwame Kyeretwie, and the Eswatini Princess had a great time at the royal banquet

The royals showed off their dance moves at the Manhyia banquet.

Some social media users have commented on the lovely videos that bloggers posted on Instagram

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, graciously hosted the esteemed King Mswati III, the absolute monarch of Eswatini, at an opulent grand banquet that celebrated cultural ties and diplomatic relations.

This regal gathering, steeped in rich cultural traditions, was not just a social event but a significant milestone in high-level traditional diplomacy between two of Africa’s most revered monarchies.

King Mswati III’s private visit to Ghana was an opportunity for meaningful dialogues aimed at reinforcing bilateral ties while deepening cultural exchanges that have, for centuries, characterised interactions between the two kingdoms.

Each royal figure brought their unique flair to the evening, with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and King Mswati III donning impeccably tailored suits that exuded elegance and sophistication.

Lady Julia captivated attendees in a flawless lace gown that masterfully blended modern fashion with traditional Ghanaian artistry.

Meanwhile, Her Royal Highness Inkhosikati laMagongo shone brightly in a flamboyant long-sleeve designer ensemble adorned with a colourful kente shawl, a symbol of her rich heritage.

The elegant wives of the monarchs sported matching ponytail hairstyles and exquisite, eye-catching accessories that completed their regal looks, further elevating the atmosphere of the evening.

This historic meeting of two distinguished African leaders carries immense symbolic significance, as the Asante Kingdom, with its centuries-old heritage and sophisticated system of governance, aligns with the Kingdom of Eswatini, renowned for its vibrant cultural festivals and deep-rooted monarchical traditions.

The gathering at Manhyia Palace not only celebrated their respective legacies but also underlined a shared dedication to upholding and projecting authentic African leadership and values on a global platform.

The highlight of the event was captured in a delightful video that quickly went viral, showcasing Otumfuo’s handsome young son, Oheneba Nana Kwame Kyeretwie, engaging in a spirited dance with one of the princesses of Eswatini.

Oheneba looked dapper in a luxurious black designer suit paired with a crisp white long-sleeve shirt, accentuated by polished black shoes that added to his charming appearance.

The Eswatini princess made a remarkable impression in a striking black halterneck gown that flowed gracefully to the floor, her elegant centre-parted hairstyle framing her face beautifully and enhancing her radiant presence.

Infact Asante Woman Are So Gorgeous, I Wish to Marry One into Eswatini — Eswatini King III Declares

0

During a formal visit to the Manhyia Palace, the King of Eswatini declared his intention to wed an Asante woman, sparking a flurry of talk that combined royal diplomacy with cultural flirtation. As he stood in front of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, the monarch couldn’t help but express his adoration, laced with a little humor and sincerity.

He added with a look of respect, “I would be honored to make one of your noble Asante daughters my 17th wife, if your majesty permits.” The chiefs’ and royals’ laughter swiftly turned into a national commotion.

The Eswatini king, known for maintaining a palace brimming with queens—sixteen and counting—wasn’t merely seeking another jewel for his crown. His admiration was rooted in something more symbolic: the heritage, strength, and elegance of Asante women. Graceful yet commanding, stylish yet steeped in tradition, the Asante woman represents a perfect storm of royalty, intellect, and legacy. And clearly, the king took notice.

Behind the scenes, courtiers from both kingdoms exchanged amused glances while whispers swirled about what a cultural merger might look like. Would an Asante bride adjust to the rhythms of Eswatini’s reed dance? Would kente rival Eswatini’s traditional emahiya? Or would this union be a masterstroke of Pan-African solidarity—a royal alliance joining West and Southern Africa in unexpected matrimony?

Ghanaian social media didn’t hold back either. TikTok skits, humorous commentary, and parodies flooded timelines. Memes of “Ghana exporting queens now” and mock bride auditions set the digital space ablaze, while others debated the symbolism of such an inter-monarchical bond. Amid the satire, some saw opportunity—a deeper diplomatic rapport rooted in cultural respect and Afrocentric unity.

Sources say Otumfuo graciously smiled at the king’s proposal, neither confirming nor denying the possibility. But palace insiders hint that the Asantehene, ever the custodian of tradition, took the proposal as both a compliment and a curious case of cross-cultural admiration.

For now, the matter remains courtly banter. But who knows? One day soon, an Asante queen could be seen weaving her presence into the Eswatini palace—resplendent in gold, Kente, and ancestral pride.

A Bold and Timeless Symbol of Identity and Culture

Dreadlocks, one of the most iconic and expressive hairstyles in the world, continue to inspire both men and women as a powerful symbol of style, identity, and heritage. With roots tracing back to ancient civilizations like Egypt, India, and various African cultures, dreadlocks have transcended time and geography to become a globally embraced look.

Today, dreadlocks are more than just a hairstyle — they are a lifestyle. For many individuals, locking their hair represents a spiritual journey, cultural pride, or a personal statement of freedom and individuality. Whether created naturally through matting or through techniques like twisting and backcombing, dreadlocks require patience, care, and a sense of purpose.

Men’s Dreadlocks: Rugged, Refined, and Rebellious

For men, dreadlocks symbolize strength and non-conformity. They are worn in a variety of styles — from neat, uniform locks to wild, freeform dreads. Many men opt for long locks that can be styled in buns, ponytails, or accessorized with beads, bands, and scarves to reflect their personality. Whether paired with urban streetwear or casual fashion, dreadlocks are a bold masculine statement.

Women’s Dreadlocks: Empowering Beauty and Individuality

Women around the world also wear dreadlocks with pride, embracing them as a symbol of empowerment and authenticity. From thick, bold locks to fine, sculpted twists, dreadlocks offer women the chance to showcase both natural beauty and personal flair. Hair accessories like shells, colored yarn, or jewels often add a feminine and cultural touch.

Low Maintenance, High Impact

Beyond aesthetics and symbolism, dreadlocks offer a practical advantage — low maintenance. Once fully formed, they require minimal styling, making them ideal for individuals with busy schedules. Regular washing and occasional re-twisting are necessary to maintain hygiene and structure, but overall, dreadlocks are a sustainable and manageable option.

In Conclusion

Whether worn for cultural, spiritual, or aesthetic reasons, dreadlocks remain a timeless expression of self. They embody history, freedom, strength, and an unapologetic celebration of identity — making them one of the most powerful hairstyles of all time.

GIZ Ghana concludes Circular Project after three years of action against plastic waste

0

Go Circular Ghana aimed to reduce the prevalence of single-use plastics (SUPs) Go Circular Ghana aimed to reduce the prevalence of single-use plastics (SUPs)

After three years of targeted action against plastic waste, the Go Circular Ghana project has officially concluded.

The initiative, implemented by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), brought together key players from government, business, and civil society for a final event celebrating its achievements and calling for broader scale-up.

This marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s fight against plastic pollution and its transition toward a circular economy.

Since its inception, Go Circular Ghana aimed to reduce the prevalence of single-use plastics (SUPs) and promote sustainable practices. At the project’s close, stakeholders emphasized that its impact speaks louder than intentions.

“Reducing plastic waste is not only possible, but it is already happening,” organisers said in a statement. “The project leaves behind scalable tools, business innovations, and cross-sector partnerships that now call for wider adoption.”

The project featured three flagship interventions that tackled plastic pollution through both policy and grassroots action.

A Roadmap to Phase Down Single-Use Plastics was developed, focusing on the supermarket, retail, hospitality, and food and beverage industries. The roadmap, created in close consultation with stakeholders, serves as a practical guide to align Ghana’s plastic reduction efforts across sectors.

Additionally, a Voluntary Pact was signed by eight businesses, pledging to cut their single-use plastic use by half by 2030. Among the pact’s successes was the nationwide media campaign, Bag the Habit of Single-Use Plastic, which reached over 20 million Ghanaians via radio, TV, and billboards with the slogan: Be part of the solution, not the pollution!

“A pilot at one supermarket chain encouraged over 1,000 customers to switch to reusable bags,” organisers noted, adding that a 20% bag return rate signals growing consumer readiness.

The project also launched a Business Development Programme for SMEs in the food and catering sector. In collaboration with Impact Footprints Africa, businesses were supported to adopt more sustainable, culturally rooted packaging alternatives.

“This initiative targeted plastic reduction at the grassroots level,” the project team said, encouraging a return to traditional, low-waste practices.

While the project’s conclusion marks the end of this phase, stakeholders insist the work must continue.

“Plastic reduction is no longer just a commitment, it’s a proven path forward. Let’s keep the momentum going,” the statement read.

The Go Circular program is a global initiative supporting partner countries in adopting circular economy practices by scaling innovations and building strategic partnerships.

In Ghana, the focus has been on reducing single-use plastics through policy development, public awareness campaigns, and business collaborations.

Implemented by GIZ, the project forms part of Germany’s broader development cooperation portfolio in Ghana, which includes over 50 programs addressing energy, job creation, climate resilience, and governance.

Mohammed Kudus seals mega-money exit as £64m striker signs

0

West Ham could sell Mohammed Kudus to fund a squad revamp for Graham Potter (Image: Getty)

West Ham have made an understated start to the summer transfer window, with more players heading out the door than coming through it. First-team players Kurt Zouma, Danny Ings, Vladimir Coufal, Lukasz Fabianski and Aaron Cresswell have all been released, while Evan Ferguson and Carlos Soler have been sent back to their parent clubs after completing loan spells at the London Stadium.

So far, the only acquisition is Jean-Clair Todibo, whose own loan move from OGC Nice was made permanent for £32.8million. There is still plenty of scope for transfer dealings as the Hammers board look to build a healthy squad for Graham Potter ahead of his first full season in charge. Here, Express Sport takes you through three deals that would make up West Ham’s dream window…

Mohammed Kudus seals mega-money exit

There are murmurs that West Ham are willing to sell Kudus in order to fund their summer transfer ambitions. He only managed five goals across all competitions last season but he could still fetch a massive fee, with numerous big clubs, including the likes of Tottenham and Chelsea interested in the Ghanaian.

If the Hammers have internally made the call to cash in, the dream scenario rests on extracting the maximum value from Kudus’ sale. Reports indicate that his contract includes an £80m release clause for European clubs, an £85m release clause for Premier League clubs, and a £120m release clause for Saudi clubs.

Kudus does have suitors in Saudi Arabia, but he is believed to be keen on a move which would bring him Champions League football. It remains to be seen whether West Ham bosses are able to change his mind.

Al Okhdood v Al Nassr - Saudi Pro League
There are rumours of discontent surrounding Jhon Duran at Al-Nassr (Image: Getty)

£64m striker signs

Only six months on from completing a £64m switch to Al-Nassr, rumours have been swirling in this window about Jhon Duran leaving the Saudi Pro League side. West Ham hold a long-standing interest in the Colombian, and any realistic opportunity to land him this time round would surely be snapped up.

The Hammers tabled a £57m offer before Al-Nassr beat them to the punch, and came within a whisker of luring him away from Aston Villa in the summer of 2024. Potter desperately needs a first-class centre-forward and Duran would fit the bill.

Aguerd raises cash

To balance the books and go after players of Duran’s calibre, senior figures at the London Stadium will need to negotiate top-dollar deals for those they deem surplus to requirements. After spending last season on loan at Real Sociedad, Nayef Aguerd falls into that category.

West Ham signed the Moroccan for £30m in 2022, but he has failed to nail down a consistent spot in the first team over the past three years. Among his suitors are Juventus and Marseille – two clubs with enough cash to ensure the Hammers recoup most of their losses.

Christian Village residents push for swift bridge expansion to halt floods

0

Residents of the Cemetery area in Christian Village, Accra, have renewed urgent calls for action as persistent flooding continues to devastate their community.

Years of neglect, compounded by severe erosion, have led to land collapse and now threaten a crucial bridge linking two communities.

This troubled zone lies on the boundary of the Okaikwei North and Ga East municipalities. Officials from both assemblies admit that overlapping jurisdictions often slow response efforts.

While some attribute the flooding to unplanned construction choking natural waterways, many locals believe the main issue is a narrow bridge that struggles to handle stormwater runoff.

Each time it rains, the bridge is mostly submerged, triggering floods across the area. With every dark cloud, residents brace themselves, living in constant fear of the next flood.

Ongoing erosion has eaten away land around the bridge, putting lives at risk and threatening nearby structures.

“The major cause of the flooding in this area is the bridge, and it is because the holes in the bridge are very small and cannot contain the pressure,” a resident told Channel One News.

A site visit revealed a critical danger: the bridge has no railings, exposing students and pedestrians to a serious risk of falling into the stream below.

Residents are urging authorities to act now, before property losses turn into tragic losses of life.

In response, the Municipal Chief Executive of the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly, Christian Tetteh Badger, said the bridge’s expansion has been captured under the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project, which is expected to commence soon.

“The holes within the bridge are narrow, and so GARID will remove the whole place and reconstruct another,” he said

He expressed optimism that this long-awaited intervention will bring relief to the community.

He also encouraged residents to report concerns promptly to the Assembly, assuring them of quick action when issues are properly channelled.

Breathe Easier with Better Nutrition – Eating to Fight Respiratory Infections

0

The arrival of the rains and relatively cold weather often signals the start of flu season, bringing with it a rise in coughs, cold, and other respiratory problems. There are even reports of the resurgence of COVID-19, is making rounds in the media. The focus is once again on practical steps to protect public health. While wearing masks, maintaining physical distancing, and improving ventilation remain essential, the role of good nutrition in supporting the immune system cannot be overlooked. In this article, we explore how a balanced diet can help the body defend itself against infectious respiratory diseases including colds, flu and COVID-19, and what this means for individuals and families seeking to stay healthy in the current climate.

Understanding The Immune System

The immune system is your body’s natural defence against infections. It is a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to detect and destroy harmful invaders like bacteria, viruses, and parasites. When this system is strong and balanced, it can fight off most infections efficiently and speed up recovery. However, when it is weakened due to poor nutrition, stress, or chronic illness the risk of prolonged or severe infections increases. Good nutrition supports:

  • Immune cell production and function
  • Wound healing and tissue repair
  • Antioxidant defence against inflammation
  • Energy for fever, coughing, or other symptoms

Key Nutrients for Fighting Infections

  • Protein: This is essential for the production of immune cells and antibodies. During infections, protein needs increase. Eggs, poultry, fish, beans of all kinds, dairy, and lean meats are sources of protein.
  • Vitamin C: This enhances immune cell function and acts as an antioxidant, reducing inflammation caused by infections. Sources of vitamin C are; oranges, bell peppers, pawpaw (papaya), tomatoes, guava, and strawberries.
  • Zinc: It helps the immune system function properly and is involved in wound healing and fighting viral infections. Sources of zinc are meat, shellfish, beans, seeds, whole grains and groundnuts.
  • Vitamin A: It maintains the integrity of the skin and mucous membranes which are the body’s first line of defence. Carrots, sweet potatoes, dark leafy greens, mangoes, eggs, and liver are good sources of vitamin A.
  • Fluids and Electrolytes: Hydration is crucial, especially during fever or diarrhoea. It helps flush out toxins and supports all body functions. You can get this from drinking water, coconut water, clear broths, herbal teas, fresh fruit juices
  • Healthy Fats: Good fats help absorb fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and provide energy during times of poor appetite. Sources of healthy fats are avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil, coconut water, palm oil in moderation.

Nutrition considerations when fighting an infection

When your body is fighting an infection, what you eat can make a big difference in how quickly you recover. It is best to limit sugary foods and drinks, as they may weaken your immune response. Highly processed snacks often lack the nutrients your body needs and may contain ingredients that promote inflammation. Alcohol and too much caffeine can also contribute to dehydration and lower your body’s ability to fight illness. If you have a poor appetite, which is common during illness, try eating small, frequent meals. Nutrient-rich options like smoothies, soups, and porridges are often easier to tolerate, and you can boost their energy content with ingredients like nut butter, eggs, or milk. If eating is too difficult, focus on staying hydrated until your appetite returns. Once you start to feel better, continue paying attention to your nutrition. Eating well after an infection helps to rebuild nutrient stores, repair body tissues, and restore any weight or strength you may have lost.

In summary

Good nutrition though not a substitute for medication can certainly support the immune system before, during, and after respiratory infections. Whether you are battling the flu, a cold or COVID-19, a nourishing balanced diet with a focus on the key nutrients discussed is one of your best tools for a quicker and stronger recovery. If you are dealing with a chronic infection or are unsure what to eat while sick, speak with a registered dietitian for a personalized nutrition plan.

Minority has no legal basis to demand Mahama, AG response on Torkornoo claims – Bidema

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

Constitutional lawyer Raymond Bidema has asserted that the Minority Caucus in Parliament lacks the legal standing to compel President John Dramani Mahama or the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, to respond to recent allegations made by embattled Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

This follows calls by the Minority in Parliament urging President Mahama and the Attorney General to publicly respond to claims made by the suspended Chief Justice against the state.

At a recent press conference, Justice Torkornoo raised concerns over procedural breaches, human rights violations, and what she described as a conspiracy to remove her from office.

In response, Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu dismissed her remarks, calling them “most regrettable.”

However, addressing the media, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah criticized both the President and the Attorney General for their continued silence more than 48 hours after Justice Torkornoo’s explosive revelations.

In a sharp rebuttal, speaking to Tutuwaa Danso on Starr Today on Friday, June 27, Lawyer Bidema argued that the Minority’s demands fall outside their constitutional mandate and risk politicizing a matter that should be resolved through judicial channels.

“What is the legal basis for asking either President Mahama or the Attorney General to respond? Was Her Ladyship addressing the Attorney General, the President, or the good people of Ghana? Clearly, what the Chief Justice did three days ago is unconstitutional. The Constitution provides for such matters to be handled in camera. It has internal mechanisms for addressing grievances through due process.

“I do not believe there is any provision in the Constitution that permits an embattled Chief Justice to publicly address the nation in the manner she did. Her actions are not anchored in any law. Since when did it become a settled practice to call on the President or Attorney General to respond to public commentary by an individual? Is this a new precedent? If so, it is an unwise one.”

Bidema stressed the importance of protecting the integrity of national institutions:

“We cannot politicize every matter in this country. We must be cautious about the precedents we set—they may not serve the nation’s best interest. Over the past two years, the Chief Justice herself led the Judiciary.

“Yet the picture she painted suggests the Judiciary is no longer a viable channel for justice. Instead, she implies the public arena is the only space left for redress. That’s a dangerous narrative for our democracy.

“So, I ask: when did she come to the realization that the Judiciary isn’t working? Is it only now, when she is personally facing challenges? Or is this the same institution she led until recently?”

‘Even if it takes 100 years, NPP will still punish you’

The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has issued a strong warning to Supreme Court Judge, Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, over what he describes as interference by the Mahama government in the case involving suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo.

According to Abronye, Justice Adibu-Asiedu, who is serving on the five-member committee investigating the petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Torkornoo, has been influenced by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He added that the judge will one day face the consequences of his actions, emphasizing that the NPP will “punish him” even if it takes a hundred years.

Speaking on his Ohiani TV on June 28, 2025, Abronye DC accused the judge, who was appointed by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, of allowing himself to be manipulated by the current government.

“Because they were drunk, they made decisions that were unlawful. But for us, we won’t speak much now. Even if it takes 100 years, we know the judge who was on the committee. By the time NPP returns to power, he might still be in office, and we will sack him in disgrace,” Abronye fumed.

“He should know that no matter what, the NPP will remove him. He was pressured into making that decision, and when we come to power, no one will save him under an NPP government.”

He further alleged that Justice Adibu-Asiedu was intentionally added to the committee to give the impression of neutrality.

“The reason they brought Justice Adibu-Asiedu onto the committee was strategic. When the NDC sacks the Chief Justice, the government, through people like Felix Ofosu Kwakye, will hold a press conference and claim that the committee was not biased because Adibu-Asiedu, an appointee of Nana Addo, was part of it.

“They will say that even a judge appointed by Nana Addo supports the Chief Justice’s removal.”

Meanwhile, suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has accused the government of denying her a fair hearing in the investigation process.

She has dismissed all the allegations levelled against her in the three petitions submitted to the president, calling the proceedings unjust.

Think tanks slam PURC over 2.45% electricity tariff hike

0

File photo of an electricity meter File photo of an electricity meter

Two leading think tanks, CUTS International and the Center for Environmental Management and Sustainable Energy (CEMSE), have criticised the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) decision to increase electricity tariffs by 2.45% effective July 1, 2025.

In a joint statement signed by Appiah Kusi Adomako, West Africa Regional Director for CUTS International, and Benjamin Nsiah, Executive Director of CEMSE, the groups described the tariff adjustment as lacking transparency, poorly timed, and economically unjustifiable.

They argued the increase violated Section 3(c) of the PURC Act 538 of 1997, which mandates fair pricing of electricity for the mutual benefit of the government, producers, and consumers.

The statement noted that several economic indicators, such as the appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi and declining inflation, should have resulted in a significant reduction in tariffs, not an increase.

It noted that the cedi had appreciated by over 30 percent between the first and second quarters of 2025, from $1/GH¢15.70 to $1/GH¢10.31.

“This appreciation means end-users overpaid by 30 percent in previous quarters, resulting in a windfall of approximately GH¢1 billion for the government and distribution companies.

“These funds could have been used to offset arrears or procure emergency fuel, rendering the tariff increase unjustifiable,” it added.

The think tanks also highlighted the decline in inflation as a factor expected to ease operational costs, which should have benefited consumers.

They accused the PURC of using a “miscalculated inflation rate.”

The PURC reportedly used a rate of 20.67%, instead of the current 18.4%, despite having used higher and more accurate figures in earlier quarters (22.49% in Q1 and Q2 2025).

The statement slammed the introduction of new cost components, including gas costs and a GH¢488 million arrears claim, which they said contradicted expectations of a tariff reduction in Q3 2025.

On the gas cost component, the think tanks stated: “The Weighted Average Cost of Gas (WACOG) rose by only $0.08 (1%); a negligible impact compared to previous quarters.”

“For instance, a 25 percent WACOG increase in Q2 2024 led to only a 3.5 percent tariff hike. The cedi’s appreciation further diminishes the justification for this adjustment, making the tariff increase economically dishonest,” the statement said.

Addressing the arrears, the think tanks criticised PURC for ignoring the GH¢1 billion currency windfall and for failing to provide transparency on the arrears’ calculation.

They also accused the PURC of not engaging stakeholders before introducing fuel costs and reserve margins into the tariff decision-making process.

“Similarly, the reserve margin allocation remains opaque, with no attached figures or percentages,” the statement said, adding that the 27% fuel cost component lacked transparency, with no simulations, fuel price disclosures, or procurement details.

Warning of long-term consequences, the think tanks stated that if care was not taken, PURC’s frequent upward tariff adjustments could succeed in the creation of an energy sector that was not efficient.

It urged the regulator to address underlying issues like commercial and technical losses instead of shifting costs to consumers.

“The lack of participation, transparency, and accountability in setting the Q3 2025 tariff undermines fairness in Ghana’s electricity pricing. We urge the PURC to halt the 2.45 percent tariff increase and demand detailed disclosure of the tariff adjustment methodology and underlying assumptions,” the statement said.

Kevin Taylor Sparks Outrage After Mocking Otumfuo with Eswatini King’s

0

Controversial US-based Ghanaian commentator Kevin Taylor has once again ignited public backlash—this time for mocking the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in a viral video that compares him unfavorably to King Mswati III of Eswatini.

The drama unfolded after King Mswati III touched down in Ghana with a lavish entourage and a massive private jet, drawing admiration and curiosity from many Ghanaians. But for Kevin Taylor, it was an opportunity to throw shade. In a video that has since gone viral, Taylor sarcastically questioned Otumfuo’s influence and stature, implying that the Eswatini monarch’s grand arrival exposed a “lower level” of prestige for Ghana’s own royal figure.

“Apuu, do you see your level?” Taylor quipped as he juxtaposed the two monarchs’ public images. His comments have been widely condemned as disrespectful, especially given Otumfuo’s revered status in Ghanaian tradition and leadership.

This isn’t the first time Kevin Taylor has taken aim at Otumfuo. He previously criticized the king for attending the launch of an automobile museum in Accra instead of Kumasi, accusing him of neglecting his own region’s development. His latest remarks, however, have struck a deeper nerve, as many view them as an attack not just on Otumfuo, but on the dignity of the Ashanti Kingdom itself.

Social media has erupted with mixed reactions. While some of Taylor’s followers applauded his boldness, a larger chorus of voices—including traditionalists and cultural advocates—have called his comments “reckless,” “tribally insensitive,” and “a disgrace to Ghanaian values.”

As the dust settles, one thing is clear: Kevin Taylor’s brand of commentary continues to blur the line between critique and provocation. Whether this latest jab will have lasting consequences or simply fade into the noise of digital outrage remains to be seen.

Forestry Commission team attacked by armed thugs in Jimira forest

Efforts by officials of the Forestry Commission to clamp down on illegal mining in the Jimira Forest Reserve have been met with violent resistance, as armed thugs attacked a task force team attempting to access the reserve.

According to information gathered by JoyNews’ Erastus Asare Donkor, the Commission had received intel on Saturday, June 28, 2025, that illegal miners had once again invaded Compartment 34 of the Jimira Forest Reserve, specifically in the Bentiko-Pakyi section.

A member of the task force recounted that this was not the first time their operations had been obstructed by armed resistance.

“Apparently, we had made attempts on two occasions to clamp down on illegal miners at the said portion of the reserve but were prevented by armed thugs,” the officer revealed.

The most recent attack occurred on May 27, 2025, when the team, accompanied by seven police officers from the Nkawie Divisional Police Command, attempted to enter the area.

“At that instance, the armed thugs prevented the team from accessing the reserve,” the officer said.

The situation quickly turned violent.

“One of our officers who was seated at the front of one of our vehicles was hit with a machete several times by the thugs,” he recounted, adding that one of their vehicles also sustained damage from gunshots.

“Fortunately, apart from the officer who was hit with the machete, no one got injured.”

Lands Minister engages Ghana Coalition Against Illegal Mining

The decentralisation of the licensing regime – aimed at reducing illegal operations The decentralisation of the licensing regime – aimed at reducing illegal operations

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to combating illegal mining and promoting sustainable resource management.

He made this known during a high-level engagement with the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey on Friday, June 27, 2025.

The meeting, held at the directive of President John Dramani Mahama, followed a formal petition by the Coalition urging urgent and decisive government action to curb the destructive effects of illegal mining, widely known as galamsey.

“We are deeply committed to protecting Ghana’s natural resources and ensuring sustainable mining practices,” Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah stated.

He cited key progress made under the current administration, including the recovery of eight out of nine forest reserves previously devastated by illegal mining activities.

The minister also outlined several strategic initiatives rolled out by the government, including:

The Blue Water Guards – a specialised task force dedicated to safeguarding Ghana’s rivers and water bodies.

The Tree for Life Restoration Initiative – focused on land reclamation and reforestation in affected areas.

The decentralisation of the licensing regime – aimed at improving oversight and reducing illegal operations.

A central topic of discussion was the newly established National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), a coordinating body set up to streamline enforcement efforts across national security agencies.

The Minister emphasised that NAIMOS will enhance intelligence-sharing, improve operational efficiency, and serve as a centralised response mechanism to illegal mining threats.

Dr Ken Ashigbey, Convener of the Coalition, welcomed the initiative and pledged the group’s full support for NAIMOS, expressing hope that it would bring renewed momentum to the fight against galamsey.

The Coalition also submitted a set of key demands during the meeting, including:

The revocation of Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2162, which they argue undermines anti-galamsey efforts.

Transparency measures, such as publishing the names of owners of seized excavators.

A declaration of a state of emergency in heavily affected mining areas.

Prosecution of foreign nationals implicated in illegal mining operations.

In response, Armah-Kofi Buah praised the Coalition for its consistent advocacy and assured the delegation that their recommendations would be submitted to President Mahama for careful consideration.

Minority demands ministerial briefing on Covid-19 surge at University of Ghana

The Minority in Parliament is demanding that the Minister of Health appear before the House to provide a comprehensive briefing on the resurgence of COVID-19 cases at the University of Ghana.

According to the Minority, the situation is spiralling out of control, fueling fear and panic in parts of the country.

They insist the Minister must be transparent about the current state of affairs and offer clear information to the public.

“We don’t want to go through what the country went through some time back, so let’s make hay while the sun shines. And I place this call right in front of the respected leader of the house that we should make an arrangement and get the sector minister to come and do the needful,” Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, stated on the floor of Parliament.

“It is a very important issue that we need to get the Health Minister to respond and update the country as to whether COVID is back or not,” added Nurudeen Muhammed Mumuni, MP for Nalerigu/Gambaga.

Ashie Moore vs Singaporean Businessman: Here's all you need to know

0

A “legal” showdown is gradually unfolding between Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore, and a Singaporean businessman named Toh You Kang in what has become a high-stakes dispute involving millions of dollars, defrauding allegations and conflicting narratives.

The case, which is currently before the Dansoman Circuit Court, centers on claims of financial deceit and breach of trust involving a failed cable business venture in Ghana.

Criminal Case: Toh You Kang charged with fraud

According to a charge sheet from the Dansoman Circuit Court, Toh You Kang, 33, has been charged with defrauding by false pretenses contrary to Section 131(1) of Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act 1960 (Act 29).

Court documents reveal that between May and August 2024, Toh allegedly convinced Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore to part with a sum of $3,000,000 under the pretext of setting up a joint cable business in Ghana.

Investigations indicate that the funds were transferred by a Chinese business partner of Ashie Moore into Toh’s account.

Instead of honouring the agreement, Toh reportedly absconded from Ghana and falsely informed the Chinese investor that the money had already been handed over to Ashie Moore.

Toh was arrested by the Accra Regional CID on May 28, 2025, upon his return to Ghana and is currently on remand.

He has reportedly admitted to receiving the money but claimed it was never meant to be transferred to Ashie Moore.

Civil Suit: Toh you Kang sues Ashie Moore

In an unexpected twist, Toh You Kang has filed a civil suit against Ashie Moore at the High Court in Accra, accusing the NDC chairman of fraudulently taking $800,000 from him as payment for an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) cable supply contract that allegedly never materialized.

Toh, who identifies himself as CEO of NSG Group, claimed in his application that he was misled into believing that Moore had secured a multi-million-dollar contract with ECG and demanded advanced payment.

The Singaporean businessman also alleged he was subjected to abuse, threats and blackmail after arriving in Ghana at Moore’s request.

Moore’s Response: A smear campaign and complete falsehood

Ashie Moore has categorically denied all allegations in the civil suit through his lawyer, Gideon Tettey Tetteh, describing the claims as baseless and defamatory.

In a statement dated June 28, 2025, Tetteh stated, “The suspect rather defrauded Mr. Ashie Moore and his partners of $3 million… It is an absolute falsehood that an amount of $800,000 has been paid to Ashie Moore.”

The statement further clarified that the matter is under police investigation with a petition submitted to the Attorney General requesting the case to be moved beyond police jurisdiction due to its complexity and scale.

Tetteh also accused the Singaporean of damaging Moore’s businesses and misleading the public.

Chinese company backs Moore, disowns Toh You Kang

In a major development Foshan Yuejiaxin Wire & Cable Co., Ltd., a reputable cable manufacturing company based in Foshan City, Guangdong, China, has issued a public disclaimer distancing itself from Toh You Kang.

The statement, signed by the company’s Managing Director, Liang Liubing, condemned Toh’s actions, stating “Mr. Toh You Kang has been implicated in a series of fraudulent activities that have resulted in the loss of several millions of dollars to our company… He is presently facing multiple charges of fraud in Ghana”.

The company confirmed that it had entrusted significant funds to Toh for legitimate business transactions in Ghana including collaborations with Ashie Moore.

The funds, however, were allegedly misappropriated.

“We reaffirm our full support for Emmanuel Ashie Moore in his pursuit of justice,” the disclaimer added.

The company also disclosed that its Managing Director had personally visited Ghana, submitted evidence to the Ghana Police Service, and continues to assist in the investigation.

Think tanks condemn PURC’s 2.45% tariff hike, demand transparency

0

Two leading think tanks, CUTS International and the Center for Environmental Management and Sustainable Energy (CEMSE), have criticized the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) decision to increase electricity tariffs by 2.45% effective July 1, 2025.

The statement noted that several economic indicators—such as the appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi and declining inflation—should have resulted in a significant reduction in tariffs, not an increase.

It noted that the cedi had appreciated by over 30 per cent between the first and second quarters of 2025, from $1/Ghc15.70 to $1/Ghc10.31

“This appreciation means end-users overpaid by 30 per cent in previous quarters, resulting in a windfall of approximately Ghc1 billion for the government and distribution companies.

“For instance, a 25 per cent WACOG increase in Q2 2024 led to only a 3.5 per cent tariff hike. The cedi’s appreciation further diminishes the justification for this adjustment, making the tariff increase economically dishonest,” the statement said.

Addressing the arrears, the think tanks criticized PURC for ignoring the GH¢1 billion currency windfall and for failing to provide transparency on the arrears’ calculation.

We urge the PURC to halt the 2.45 per cent tariff increase and demand detailed disclosure of the tariff adjustment methodology and underlying assumptions,” the statement said.

Neom ready to meet £70m West Ham valuation for Mohammed Kudus

Saudi club Neom SC are prepared to meet West Ham’s £70 million valuation for Ghana international Mohammed Kudus, positioning themselves to ignite a summer transfer race, according to reports.

Kudus, 24, aims to move on this summer, prioritizing Champions League football over a domestic switch.

While his contract includes an £85 million release clause for Premier League clubs, West Ham are reportedly ready to accept lower offers, around £70 million, reflecting the winger’s desire to leave.

Neom SC, a newly promoted side backed by Saudi Arabia’s ambitious NEOM megaproject, are now reportedly ready to match West Ham’s asking price—although the ultimate decision lies with Kudus himself.

Other Premier League teams, including Chelsea and Newcastle, have conducted early assessments, while Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City are also monitoring developments closely.

Tottenham are understood to have interest but are considered a fallback option if their primary targets fall through.

Kudus has expressed a willingness to consider his options carefully before making a decision. His aim remains to feature in Europe’s premier competition, which Saudi football cannot offer at present.

West Ham, managing financial constraints, appear inclined to negotiate if a suitable offer arrives.

Neom are now emerging as serious contenders willing to meet that price, cementing a growing trend of ambitious Saudi clubs targeting Premier League talent.

With the player’s release clause window opening from July 1 to 10, the coming weeks could be pivotal in determining whether Kudus joins the race, with Neom ready to compete head-to-head with European giants for his signature.

Too Disrespectful Keseben TV Host Condemns Abronye Over Gay, Armed Robbery Allegations on Archbishop

0

A recent episode of Keseben TV’s evening show has sparked intense public reaction after the host took a firm stand against Bono Regional NPP Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, over his controversial remarks about Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams. The host condemned Abronye’s verbal attacks, describing them as “reckless, disrespectful, and damaging to both the church and the political image of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).”

According to the host, Abronye had accused the respected Archbishop of being silent on LGBTQ+ matters, going as far as to label him with derogatory terms and unfounded allegations. The Keseben presenter did not mince words, stating that such behavior from a senior party official was not only disgraceful but could have serious consequences for the NPP’s public image ahead of future elections.

“This is not just an attack on a man of God,” the host said. “It’s an attack on decency, on leadership, and on the values we claim to uphold as a nation. If the NPP continues to tolerate this level of disrespect, they will struggle to convince Ghanaians they are ready to lead.”

The host further argued that Duncan-Williams, as a spiritual leader, has the right to choose how and when to speak on national issues, and that politicizing his silence on LGBTQ+ matters was both unfair and dangerous. He called on the NPP’s national leadership to take disciplinary action against Abronye, warning that failure to do so would embolden further misconduct.

This isn’t the first time Abronye has come under fire for his outspoken style. His recent referral to the NPP’s disciplinary committee for breaching party directives and making unguarded public comments has already raised concerns within the party’s ranks.

As the political climate heats up ahead of the 2028 elections, many are watching closely to see whether the NPP will rein in its controversial figures or risk alienating key segments of the electorate, including the religious community.

Leaving The NPP Was One Of Alan Kyerematen’s Worst Political Decisions – Opinion

0

One of the worst political decisions ever taken by Alan Kyerematen was leaving the NPP. He killed any potential political future and possibly hindered his children from benefiting from his success in the party.

The NPP is a party that recognizes where you are from; saying “I am Alan’s son” wouldn’t carry as much weight if Alan had stayed until the end and remained a father of the party.

He had all the leverage to negotiate for the Vice Presidency or to step down and observe. Maybe, with Bawumia losing by almost 2 million votes, he would have seen his popularity increase.

He left to create a Movement for Change, forgetting that he has always been part of the status quo and therefore cannot be seen as the change agent the Ghanaian people clamor for.

Some believe that Alan Kyerematen left the NPP by acting on principle, but I don’t subscribe to that idea. To make matters worse, he was beaten by Cheddar. This is why I believe he didn’t necessarily act on principle; he was just disappointed and miscalculated his influence.

I believe he left the NPP not because his members were intimidated. If that were the case, he would have left long ago. He stayed through the worst periods when people like Mark Assibey Yeboah and others were refused appointments because they were Alan’s boys, when figures like Steve Ntim were voted against on the same grounds, and when Justin Kodua suffered intimidation because he belonged to Alan.

He stayed to enjoy being a Minister and Member of Cabinet for 7 out of the 8 years Nana was president and only complained about interference when he left the party.

He left after Ken beat him in the Super Delegates Vote. He realized a sharp decline in influence and couldn’t accept being third instead of the main threat.

Maybe today, Alan would have meant more to the NPP. Currently, people only see Bawumia as the man with the right personality and emotional maturity to lead the party. With Alan, at least they would have two capable leaders.

When you leave the main power blocks and have nothing special or different to excite the people, that’s the nail in your coffin. Kennedy Agyapong would do much better as an independent candidate than Alan. Alan is a man made for the status quo, and that’s never a good source of change. It excites no one.

By that decision, he pushed himself deep into political irrelevance, with the only gain being cameo appearances for some hugs from the NDC. I believe Alan Kyerematen organized a political funeral for himself by making such a misguided move to leave the NPP.

Vice President Must Be Taken Back Abroad To Continue With Her Treatment– NPP’s Justice Newton Speaks

News Hub Creator8h

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justice Newton Offei, has called on Ghanaians to stop spreading unnecessary rumours about the health of the Vice President. In a Facebook post, he urged that if the Vice President is still not fully well, she should be allowed to return abroad to continue her treatment so she can come back strong to serve the country.

Justice Newton described the Vice President as the second most important person in Ghana and said it is important that she receives the best medical care, no matter where it is available. He added that Ghanaians must stop the negative habit of spreading rumours whenever leaders travel outside the country for medical reasons.

He said, “We may disagree on politics, but the President and Vice President represent our shared dreams as a country.” He encouraged Ghanaians to put politics aside and support their leaders in prayer instead of gossiping about their health.

Justice Newton also praised the Vice President for her calm nature, genuine care for people, and honesty in her words. He said he loves and respects her not just because she is his “Fante auntie,” but because of the way she carries herself with grace and humility.

He ended his post by asking for God’s blessings upon her life.

His message comes at a time when there is growing concern and speculation about the Vice President’s health due to her long absence from public events. Justice Newton believes the best thing to do now is to support her in love and prayer, not in judgment or rumour.

“May God bless her,” he concluded.

MTN Ghana and partners spearhead youth mentorship drive at KNUST

0

Telecom giant MTN Ghana has joined forces with the Leadership Empowerment Club (LEC Group) to host the 2025 edition of the National Youth Empowerment Summit and Awards.

The summit, held on Saturday, 28 June at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) marked the fourth edition of the annual event.

It is aimed at inspiring and equipping young Ghanaians with essential life skills, career guidance, and entrepreneurial insight.

Speakers drawn from MTN Ghana, GCB PLC Bank, InvestCorp, and Bel Beverages shared practical advice on leadership, investment, purpose, and personal development.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to support youth across Ghana and the African continent through mentorship, digital education, and career empowerment.

Speaking at the summit, Rosemary Atta Konadu, Head of Retail Shop at MTN Ghana, encouraged participants to go beyond their comfort zones in pursuit of their ambitions.

“You must STRETCH to achieve your goals,” she said, using the acronym to urge students to value time management, execute learned skills effectively, remain resourceful, collaborate wisely, and maintain hope for the future.

Konadu expressed concern about the lack of drive among some young people, saying, “They want success but don’t want to go the extra mile.”

In a related address, LEC Group CEO Albert Prempeh Kusi called on the youth to cultivate a culture of saving and investment.

“Young people need to adopt an investment mindset,” he said. “Don’t spend everything you earn -set something aside and focus on long-term wealth creation.”

He noted with concern the tendency among young Africans to spend without planning, warning that such habits often lead to financial instability.

The summit aligns with MTN Ghana’s broader youth development agenda, which includes initiatives that seek to bridge the digital divide and equip young people with skills to thrive in an increasingly competitive global landscape.

All you need to know in the NDC chairman Ashie Moore and Singaporean businessman brouhaha

Moore’s Response: A smear campaign and complete falsehood>

Ghana bets on Mahama to crack whip on corruption

Ghana-Togo official entry point, Shia in the Ho Municipality

Ghana’s new government says it aims to retrieve more than US$21 billion allegedly stolen by public officials from national assets as it moves to crack down on corruption.

Within six months of assuming office, President John Dramani Mahama’s government set up Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), an independent anti-corruption agency, which, on face value, is seen as a demonstration of its seriousness.

The main target appears to be erstwhile members of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government, who are accused of systematically asset-stripping state institutions, tax evasion, illegal movement of goods through porous border posts, and criminal land deals, among a host of varied illicit activities.

Ghana bets on Mahama to crack whip on corruption
A cargo loaded with goods from Togo is entering Ghana using the Shia border

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who is past chairman of ORAL, said in February that the US$21 billion represents just 36 of the cases the agency is actively investigating.

“In total, considering the 36 cases, the high-value cases we’ve identified, and the land-related loots, we can potentially raise about $21.19 billion. This is far more than what we’ve been pursuing from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), subjecting ourselves to all sorts of conditionalities,” Ablakwa said.

He was referring to Ghana’s heavy dependence on external funding from Bretton Woods institutions and donor funding for its development projects.

Efforts to mobilise funding locally have been hampered by policy inconsistency, a weak national balance sheet, poor resourcing of state institutions, and corruption, among other factors.

Despite having customs divisions at all entry and exit points, the Ghana Revenue Authority’s efforts to plug loopholes have met with little success, as criminals still find ways to evade paying tax.

Ghana’s border posts are widely believed to be quite porous, and officials there are accused of shielding tax evaders.

As if that were not enough, Reuters recently quoted a report by the nonprofit Swissaid, which claimed that the country was losing billions of dollars in revenue annually due to smuggling from the booming artisanal gold mining sector, with much of the gold flowing to the United Arab Emirates.

Swissaid reportedly found a 229 metric tonne trade gap, equivalent to US$11.4 billion, between Ghana’s gold exports and corresponding imports over just five years, with most of the smuggled gold ending up in Dubai.

How poor are the entry points, and how thriving is the smuggling trade?

Ghana bets on Mahama to crack whip on corruption
An open barrier on the Shia border

Kofi Mensah (not his real name) tells me that smuggling goods between Ghana and Togo is a common trade for many in his community.

It is around 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, 22nd June. Kofi has just completed overhauling his motorbike in preparation for a night job, one that involves smuggling cocoa beans from Ghana to Kpalimé, the district capital of Kloto in Togo.

This time, the cocoa is being sourced from Kpedze, a border community in the Ho West district of the Volta region. Kofi declined my request to accompany him, citing concerns that I might later report their secret routes to the authorities.

He explained that these trips often involve navigating dense forests and crossing rivers under the cover of night. I observed as he carefully packed sacks of cocoa beans at the seller’s residence, ready to be loaded onto his motorbike later that evening.

For transporting approximately 67 kilogrammes of cocoa, Kofi earns GH500. But the job doesn’t end there. To avoid returning empty-handed, he has already arranged to bring back smuggled goods: two 50kg bags of sugar, rice, and cartons of cooking oil for a local trader.

That job also earns him GH500, totalling GH1,000 for the weekend’s operations.

From what I have gathered, this form of cross-border business facilitated by commercial motorbike riders, commonly referred to as Okada, has long been lucrative. However, as more riders join the smuggling trade, competition has steadily driven down individual earnings.

From Kpedze, I travelled to Honuta, a neighbouring farming community. In the 1980s, Honuta served as a major entry point in the Ho Municipality before newer border posts such as Shia and Nyive were established.

Today, Honuta remains active with Okada operations. However, the local riders were reluctant to speak, expressing suspicion and concern over potential exposure. Tensions briefly flared until Kofi Mensah intervened to calm the situation.

It quickly became apparent that cocoa beans remain the most frequently smuggled commodity from Ghana into Togo. In return, foodstuffs, motor parts, and vehicle spare parts are brought back into Ghana.

My next stop was Shia, a historic town in the Ho Municipality. Much like Kpedze and Honuta, the youth in Shia are heavily engaged in the Okada business and, by extension, the smuggling trade.

Despite initial hesitation, a few riders admitted that with declining passenger traffic, smuggling now provides them with a more stable and dependable income.

A key revelation in my investigation was the widespread existence of unapproved routes in these rural communities, routes allegedly unknown to customs and immigration officials. Interestingly, I was told that Togolese security personnel rarely interfere with smugglers, whether goods are being brought into or taken out of the country.

What are the experts saying?

Professor Evans Akwasi Gyasi, Associate Professor of International Trade at the School of Economics, Finance and Law, Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom, attributes the surge in smuggling to discrepancies in tax regimes between Ghana and its neighbours.

“Why do we have a free port in Togo? How much is the duty in Togo? Because of the tax regime in Ghana, smuggling becomes an incentive,” he explained.

He added, “Nobody benefits when the tax ceiling is too high. It stifles growth and encourages people to seek alternative means of bringing goods into the country.”

Professor Gyasi urged Ghanaian policymakers to urgently reconsider the country’s port charges. “It’s time for our leaders to come together and chart a better path. Our port charges are far too high; it’s simply not sustainable.”

He highlighted the issue of corruption at border posts, noting that many traders are compelled to pay bribes to evade taxes or reduce duty obligations. While he condemned the practice of smuggling, he emphasised the importance of prosecuting offenders and reforming the system to eliminate incentives that enable such acts.

Tackling the borders

Over the years, it has been alleged that some officials of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) have themselves been complicit in smuggling operations.

In 2022, a JoyNews exposé revealed how certain customs officers facilitated the smuggling of thousands of gallons of vegetable cooking oil from Togo and Côte d’Ivoire, resulting in losses of over GH300 million.

In response, the GRA pledged to sanction staff and officers found to be colluding with smugglers operating along the country’s borders.

According to officials from the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), the country lost an estimated 120,000 tonnes of cocoa to smuggling during the 2022–2023 season, with losses rising to 160,000 tonnes in the 2023–2024 season, amounting to more than one-third of national production.

This trade, largely driven by price differences between Ghana and neighbouring countries, has seen farmers move cocoa illegally through secretive routes using modified fuel tankers and tipper trucks.

In response, COCOBOD increased the farmgate price of cocoa by 45%, restructured its financing model, and deployed security and military personnel to guard critical border points.

Meanwhile, gold smuggling continues to represent a major economic leakage.

According to a June 2025 Reuters report citing a Swiss NGO, Ghana has lost approximately $11.4 billion worth of gold over five years through illicit exports, most of which were routed through the United Arab Emirates.

Despite collaborative efforts from stakeholders over the years to combat the menace, smuggling remains deeply entrenched.

Attempts over the last two weeks to obtain official comments from the GRA’s Customs Division and the Ghana Immigration Service on their joint strategies for this project were unsuccessful due to time constraints.

“We are deeply committed to protecting Ghana’s natural resources and ensuring sustainable mining practices,” Mr. Armah-Kofi Buah stated.

Dr. Ken Ashigbey, Convener of the Coalition, welcomed the initiative and pledged the group’s full support for NAIMOS, expressing hope that it would bring renewed momentum to the fight against galamsey.

In response, Mr. Armah-Kofi Buah praised the Coalition for its consistent advocacy and assured the delegation that their recommendations would be submitted to President Mahama for careful consideration

Ghanaian woman hunts Chinese ‘galamsey’ lover who is on the run after impregnating her

Selina Adu Gyamfi tells her ordeal following her romantic relationship with a Chinese lover Selina Adu Gyamfi tells her ordeal following her romantic relationship with a Chinese lover

Selina Adu Gyamfi, a resident of Abodom in the Asante Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region, has accused her Chinese lover, known as Leon, of abandoning her after allegedly impregnating her.

According to Selina, she met Leon years ago in Bekwai while the later was engaging in illegal mining, popularly called galamsey.

The two developed a romantic relationship and during that period, she claims Leon frequently supported her financially.

“My issue is that some Chinese people came to Abodom, Asante Bekwai, for galamsey. I had a relationship with one of them called Leon. When they were leaving, I didn’t know I was pregnant,” she narrated.

Appearing on Nyira FM’s social programme, Selina explained that Leon had promised to be with her and this caused her to trust and become intimate with him.

“He told me he loved me. He used to give me 1,000 cedis a week or sometimes 500 cedis every three days,” she recounted.

Selina said she only discovered her pregnancy two months after Leon and his colleagues had left Bekwai.

Upon contacting him and breaking the news of her pregnancy to him, Leon initially expressed happiness but his attitude later changed.

“I called to inform him I was pregnant and he said he liked it but I don’t know what people told him; he started avoiding me and eventually blacklisted me,” she said.

In her frustration, Selina sought Leon out and reported the matter to the police, leading to his arrest.

But according to her, the police released him shortly after.

“Leon was good to me while we were together but now I’m struggling to take care of the child alone. I don’t know where he is,” she said.

Selina is now appealing to the public and authorities to help her locate Leon as she faces difficulties raising the child alone.
