Lali X Lola petitions communications ministry over unpaid Boomplay royalties

Lali X Lola petitions communications ministry Lali X Lola petitions communications ministry

Fast rising, Ghanaian music duo, Lali X Lola, have petitioned the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, over unpaid royalties from digital music platform Boomplay.

According to them, they have not received any revenue from their music streams on the platform since April 2023.

In a petition dated May 19, 2025, the artistes expressed concern over the lack of transparency and accountability by Boomplay, stating that they have made several attempts to get answers but have been met with silence.

“Our distributors have told us that we haven’t received any payments or detailed reports from Boomplay for over a year. This is despite the fact that our music is still actively being streamed on the platform,” part of the statement read.

The musicians said the situation is frustrating and unfair, especially considering the time, money, and energy that go into creating music.

They explained that although platforms like Boomplay help artistes reach new fans and grow their brand, they must also be responsible and ensure musicians are paid what they are due.

Lali X Lola called on the minister to investigate Boomplay’s system of paying artistes and to introduce proper regulations for all digital service providers (DSPs) operating in Ghana.

“We respectfully urge your office to investigate this issue and help establish better regulatory oversight over DSPs operating within Ghana’s digital and creative economy,” they added.

Watch as Sogakope Zongo youths destroy ghettos housing criminals

Some concerned youths in the Zongo community of Sogakope have launched an operation dubbed ‘Operation Clean the Zongo’ to clamp down on rising crimes in the area.

The group began demolishing makeshift structures and ghettos believed to be sheltering criminals following a recent spate of thefts that left residents anxious and frustrated.

Sogakope, the capital of the South Tongu District in the Volta Region, has long been known for its scenic river tourism, mass bread production, and the Lower Volta Bridge, which connects the town to Sokpoe.

In recent weeks, however, the town has been grappling with a surge in petty and serious crime, with Zongo areas reportedly becoming hotspots for such activities.

According to a video post by metrotvonline.com, the structures being torn down were not residential homes but illegal hideouts used by suspected criminals.

They argued that criminal elements have been taking advantage of the neglected and poorly monitored spaces to coordinate thefts, drug use, and other unlawful activities that endanger the peace of the community.

“This is one of the ghettos in the Zongo. Spoil everything when they come, they’ll know there was action here. We can’t sit back and watch our community become a breeding ground for crime,” the report stated.

Here is how cedi’s gains can affect imports and jobs

0

Professor Godfred Bokpin is a Economist Professor Godfred Bokpin is a Economist

An economist professor at the University of Ghana of Business School, Professor Godfred Bokpin, has highlighted the implications of the cedi’s appreciation on the broader economy.

According to him, while the recent gains of the cedi are commendable, they could have unintended consequences if not carefully managed, particularly by making imports cheaper and undermining local production.

He warned that such a development could negatively impact job creation and the domestic economy.

“If the consideration is that we can drive down inflation to the end-of-year target, and we can’t get that done from the supply end because the economy’s supply capacity is severely constrained, then I would not support strengthening the currency in the manner it is currently being done,” he was quoted by MyJoyOnline.com.

Professor Bokpin noted that the appreciation of the cedi appears to be driven more by policy than by market forces.

He praised the government and the Minister for Finance for the fiscal consolidation efforts being implemented.

“It’s not a blip. And again, there are concerns about sustainability. There’s a reason for what is happening. From the fiscal side, you can see discipline. The government is not spending. Imports are very low. That means the economy’s cash absorption capacity is restricted, and demand is subdued,” he said.

Professor Bokpin commended the coordination between the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana, describing their efforts as focused and aligned.

“I want to commend the Minister for Finance and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana. There is coordination happening toward a common goal,” he stated.

However, he reiterated the potential downsides of a strengthening cedi if not balanced with policies that support domestic production.

“When you drive down the exchange rate, it only makes imports cheaper. If we were promoting an import-oriented economy, I’d say go for it. But that strategy does not create jobs.”

He cited recent data trends showing that local producers are already being adversely affected.

“Since November 2023, inflation on locally produced items has been higher than imported inflation. That means it’s more economical to import goods, even after paying all the duties at the port, than to produce them locally.”

South Africa to pursue appeal against Nigerian pastor acquitted of rape

Timothy Omotoso, head of Jesus Dominion International Church, was acquitted of all charges Timothy Omotoso, head of Jesus Dominion International Church, was acquitted of all charges

South African authorities say they will continue with legal proceedings against Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso who was acquitted of rape last month, even though he has left the country.

Mr Omotoso, who denied the 32 charges against him, was accused of sexually assaulting young women from his church in Port Elizabeth.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says it will still appeal against the judgement which found Mr Omotoso not guilty, saying his presence is not required.

South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs said Mr Omotoso had flown to Nigeria from OR Tambo International Airport, where he was filmed by public broadcaster SABC wearing a hoodie and dark sunglasses.

Mr Omotoso was first arrested in 2017 as he attempted to leave South Africa.

Among his accusers was a woman who said she was raped by the pastor when she was aged 14.

In a statement, South African prosecutors accepted “there are no legal grounds to prevent” Mr Omotoso from leaving the country following his acquittal.

However, if the appeal were allowed, the authorities would apply for Mr Omotoso to be extradited back to South Africa, the statement added, highlighting South Africa’s “bilateral extradition treaty with Nigeria”.

On Sunday, the department issued a statement saying that Mr Omotoso had been classified as an “undesirable person”, meaning he will not be able to return to the country for five years.

South Africa’s public broadcaster reports that the pastor left the country voluntarily.

Mr Omotoso leads the Jesus Dominion International church, which has branches in the UK, Nigeria, France and Israel, as well as in many parts of South Africa, according to its website.

Mr Omotoso’s trial made South African history as the first high-profile rape case to be broadcast live.

Is it safe to buy treasury bills in Ghana right now? What it means for investors

Treasury bill faces third consecutive undersubscription Treasury bill faces third consecutive undersubscription

Treasury Bills popularly known as T-Bills has for three weeks now experience major undersubscription prompting many investors to reassess their strategies.

While T-bills have long been regarded as one of the safest and most accessible investment options in Ghana, the recent downturn in returns is raising key questions: Is it still safe to buy T-bills in Ghana? And is it still worth it?

This GhanaWeb Business article highlights the current state of Ghana’s treasury market, the risks and opportunities it presents, and what investors should consider moving forward.

Why are T-bills falling?

According to data and reports from the Bank of Ghana, treasury yields have declined steadily in recent weeks, with the average 91-day and 182-day bill rates falling to around 24% and 26% as of mid-May 2025.

This marks a significant drop from earlier this year when yields hovered closer to 30%.

The main drivers of the decline include

High Investor Demand: Investors are rushing to T-bills for safety and relatively high returns pushing prices up and yields down. When demand is high, the government can offer lower interest rates.

Government Financing Strategy: The government is under less pressure to borrow at high costs due to improved cash flow from domestic revenue and support from the IMF program. This gives it room to lower interest costs.

What are the risks associated?

While treasury bills are among the safest investments available in Ghana, they are not entirely risk-free.

Investors especially those looking to preserve and grow their capital should be aware of the following key risks and considerations;

1. Decline in Yields: One of the most immediate concerns for investors is the steady decline in interest rates. As yields fall, the income potential from T-bills diminishes, particularly for short-term investors who frequently reinvest their matured bills.

2. Currency Depreciation (for Foreign Investors): For non-resident investors or Ghanaians holding wealth in foreign currency, exchange rate fluctuations are a critical factor. If the Ghana cedi depreciates significantly during the investment period, returns may be wiped out when converted back to dollars, euros, or pounds.

While the cedi has shown signs of stabilization in Q1 and Q2 of 2025, it remains vulnerable to external shocks, import pressures, and global interest rate changes making forex risk an important consideration for offshore investors.

What should investors do?

As treasury bill yields continue to trend downwards, investors are advised to protect returns and manage risk amid evolving market conditions.

With that, investors can lock in higher yields if they believe rates will continue to fall.

Also investors must ladder their investment by spreading across different maturities to manage reinvestment risk.

There is a need to diversify yields with low-risk instruments like fixed deposits or money market funds for more flexibility.

Conclusion

Despite falling yields treasury bills remain a safe and stable investment option in Ghana, especially for risk-averse investors looking to preserve capital and earn predictable returns.

Treasury bills continue to offer competitive yields with minimal risk as the 30 percent returns maybe lagging behind.

Okyenhene Supports AMAGYEI Foundation With GH¢50k

0

Okyenhene flanked by some representatives of the Foundation

The OKYENHENE, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has donated GH₵50,000 to support the AMAGYEI Foundation’s skills training initiative.

This initiative promotes youth empowerment in the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area in the Eastern Region.

The donation was made when management and some beneficiaries of the foundation’s skills training programme paid a courtesy call on the Okyenhene at his palace in Kyebi, Eastern Region, on Monday, May 12, 2025.

The AMAGYEI Foundation was established as the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) wing of the AMAGYEI Legal Firm to provide legal aid, advocacy, literacy training, mediation services, and skills training for underserved communities. It is affiliated with the Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service.

The purpose of the courtesy call was to present products made by the trainees to the Okyenhene and to seek his support in expanding the initiative to other communities in Akyem Abuakwa.

The Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, commended the foundation for its efforts in empowering local youth and improving livelihoods.

He pledged his continued support for its initiatives and emphasised the importance of affluent members of society returning to their roots to create opportunities for others, adding that the geography of one’s birth should not determine his or her economic prospects.

Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin urged citizens of Akyem Abuakwa to go back home to help their communities, nothing, “the system in Ghana does not give us the leverage and control and central planning of the economy.”

The Managing Attorney of AMAGYEI, an Accra-based Law Firm and founder of the AMAGYEI Foundation, Ofosua Amagyei, indicated that individuals who undergo skills training are also equipped with knowledge in marketing, branding, sales, customer service, among others.

“Marketing, branding, and how to register with FDA, we have taken them through all of that and we are hoping to set up ten of them to enable them to grow their business,” she said.

Ms. Amagyei expressed the hope of constructing a training centre for the foundation to aid the training of beneficiaries.

As part of the courtesy call, AMAGYEI Foundation presented to the Okyenhene with samples of some of the various items and products that the foundation’s trainees have made.

Among them were multi-purpose liquid soap, multi-purpose surface cleaner, hand wash, black soap shower gel, floor cleaner, hydrochloride bleach, antiseptic, disinfectant, fabric softener, laundry detergent, mosquito repellant, washing powder and shea butter body cream.

KsTU Graduate Elected KMA NASPA President

By Charles Tawiah

Kumasi, May 19, GNA – A graduate of Procurement and Supply Chain Management from Kumasi Technical University (KsTU), Mr. Francis Agyei, has been elected President of the National Service Personnel Association (NASPA) in the Kumasi Metropolis (KMA) for the 2025/2026 service year.

Mr. Agyei secured 210 votes to defeat his contenders, Prince Kwarteng and Emmanuel Akowuah, who garnered 81 and 66 votes, respectively.

In the Vice-Presidential race, Ezekiel Baah emerged victorious with 144 votes, overcoming Dominic Amoah (124 votes) and Edward Boateng (85 votes).

Millicent Bessah Yeboah ran unopposed for the Secretary position and received 334 votes.

For the position of Organising Secretary, Michael Amankwah won with 288 votes, defeating Emmanuel Yeboah, who polled 116.

Faustina Opoku Agyemang was elected Women’s Commissioner with 244 votes, beating Dora Ofori Agyemang, who obtained 104 votes.

Justice Appiah Kubi also triumphed in the Financial Secretary contest with 308 votes, ahead of Daniel Tano’s 36.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) following the declaration of results, Mr. Agyei highlighted the urgent need to address the welfare concerns of service personnel across the country.

He cited unemployment, inappropriate placements, and challenges faced by physically challenged personnel as key issues confronting NASPA members before, during, and after their service year.

Mr. Agyei noted that despite gaining valuable skills and experience during national service, many graduates remained unemployed after the one-year period.

He criticised the practice of assigning graduates to institutions unrelated to their field of study such as business graduates being posted to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) which, he said, undermined their professional development and limited future job opportunities.

He also expressed concern over the placement of physically challenged personnel in environments that were inaccessible or unsuitable, such as institutions requiring long walks, stair climbing, or other physically demanding tasks.

Mr. Agyei pledged to collaborate with other NASPA leaders to advocate for policies that address these challenges and improve the overall service experience for all personnel.

In response to the severe flooding that has overwhelmed parts of Accra, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has mobilised its emergency search and rescue teams.

The heavy downpours that struck on Sunday, May 18, left many communities grappling with the aftermath, with NADMO stepping up to provide crucial support.

The disaster management body has said that it is dedicating teams on high alert, ready to assist those in need and mitigate the impacts of this natural disaster.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com, Mohammed Jafaro, Chief Disaster Control Officer at NADMO, explained the urgency of their mission.

“We have activated our emergency search and rescue teams. As I am talking to you now, we have a team at Ashiyie in Adenta,” he said.

Jafaro also detailed the comprehensive approach being taken to address the crisis.

He added that local leaders are spearheading rescue operations, with regional directors actively coordinating efforts in Adenta’s Fulani area.

Another team, he said, has been dispatched to assist the communities of Nana Kurom.

Meanwhile, some key officials, including the Deputy Director General for Operations and the Deputy Director General for Technical Matters at NADMO, have also gotten involved in the field operations.

“The Director General himself is active and monitoring the situation from headquarters,” Jafaro added, emphasising the agency’s hands-on approach during this challenging time.

NADMO has, therefore, urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and exercise caution.

Serving on BoG board and Finance Committee a conflict – Minority chides Isaac Adongo

0

Isaac Adongo is a member on the BoG board Isaac Adongo is a member on the BoG board

The Minority Caucus on Parliament’s Finance Committee has noted that the presence of its Chairman, Isaac Adongo, on the Bank of Ghana board represents a conflict of interest.

According to them, Standing Order 228(2) of Parliament stipulates that the Finance Committee is mandated to monitor the central bank’s foreign exchange receipts and payments and report to Parliament every six months.

Therefore, its chairman’s presence on the board as well as the committee raises legal and ethical concerns.

“The law provides that the Bank of Ghana must report to the Finance Committee. How can a board member of the same BoG chair that committee?” the statement questioned, referencing a potential breach of the principle of natural justice, nemo judex in causa sua, which means no one should be a judge in their cause,” a statement dated May 16, 2025 was quoted by citinewsroom.com.

The statement, said to have been signed by the Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Dr Stephen Amoah, mentioned Article 184(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which assigns oversight of foreign exchange transactions to the Finance Committee.

They noted that Adongo’s dual role compromises the committee’s independence and constitutes a structural conflict of interest.

Recently, Adongo remarked that the Central Bank was banning Over-The-Counter forex withdrawals, which the bank debunked.

The minority stressed that his current role as a non-executive board member limits his scope of authority.

“Even if the statement is financially prudent, his prescribed responsibility as a non-executive board member is being overstepped,” the statement said.

Opposition leader Tundu Lissu appears in court after treason arrest Opposition leader Tundu Lissu appears in court after treason arrest

Tanzania’s main opposition leader Tundu Lissu has appeared in court for the first time since his arrest on treason charges last month, telling his supporters not to fear.

He raised his fist in a gesture of defiance and told his supporters: “You will be fine. You should not fear.”

Tension was high in the country’s biggest city, Dar es Salaam, in the morning, with security officers heavily deployed at the trial magistrate’s court and elsewhere.

But that did not deter his supporters, many of whom gathered outside the court.

The court had previously attempted to conduct hearings virtually, but he and his legal team opposed this, citing the need for transparency and due process.

The Chadema party leader was arrested on 9 April following his rallying call for “no reforms, no election” – telling supporters that the general elections due in October should not go ahead unless there are electoral reforms.

He has since been charged with treason and publishing false information online, which allegedly incited rebellion and accused police of electoral misconduct.

He denies the charges.

If convicted, he could face the death penalty.

Mr. Boamah expressed gratitude to the Assembly Members and stakeholders for the confidence reposed in him and assured them of his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of the people in the Municipality.

In a related development, Mr. John Nyamekye, Assembly Member for the Amanchia Electoral Area, was elected as the Presiding Member (PM) of the Assembly, securing 93.7 percent of the votes.

His election comes after two previous unsuccessful attempts.

Mr. Nyamekye thanked the Assembly Members for their support and promised to foster unity among members to drive development across the electoral areas.

Representing the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Baah Acheamfour, lauded the Assembly Members for their overwhelming endorsement of the two leaders.

He described their confirmation as a sign of respect and support for President John Dramani Mahama and his administration.

Mr. Acheamfour urged continued unity, cooperation, and mutual understanding within the Assembly to ensure effective governance and accelerated development in the Municipality.

3,000 affected as floods hit Odawna – NADMO confirms

0

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has disclosed that approximately 3,000 residents in the Odawna area of Accra were affected by floods following a torrential downpour on Sunday, May 18.

Odawna remains one of the hardest-hit communities, with significant water levels submerging homes, displacing residents, and destroying property.

During an assessment visit to Odawna-Sahara on Monday, May 19, by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, Nii Adjei Tawiah, NADMO’s Municipal Coordinator, Hendrick Noble Kinah, confirmed the extent of the damage and emphasised that a full report has been compiled to guide the next steps.

“About 3,000 households have been affected in the Odawna community. We started the assessment yesterday, we went through all the flooded municipal and everything is fine except Odawna, which is flooded and there are problems.

“This time around, we are going to fix it, so we have gathered a report to be taken to the administration and the administration will take it and make sure they deal with it.”

The MCE, addressing the media after the visit, acknowledged the long-standing nature of the issue and stressed the Assembly’s commitment to a permanent solution.

He hinted at exploring the use of internally generated funds to help expand the area’s earth drain and prevent future disasters.

“We have had this challenge over the years. As an Assembly, what we are looking at is to try and fix the challenge and not for us to walk in here every time and sympathise with people, collect refuse and then give them something. It is time for us to look at what we need to do about it, and we have decided to fix this once and for all.”

Only Finance Minister can remove data tariffs

0

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam George, has clarified that no sector minister has the authority to reduce or remove tariffs on data prices without the involvement of the Minister for Finance and parliamentary approval.

His response came after an X user, @tech_twi, raised concerns about the high cost of mobile data in Ghana, urging government officials to prioritise reducing tariffs, which the user claimed make up over 39% of every data purchase.

“Eyes fixed on the prize is great, but the real prize is affordable data. By your own words, there’s over 39% in tariffs on every data purchase — tariffs that were never passed through Parliament under the previous government. Removing those tariffs will cut data prices before pushing further. But right now, that 39% goes straight into your account using your own words. So the longer you delay, the more you profit. There’s no prize in promising — The true victory lies in eliminating that 39% and still pushing to make data more affordable to the public.”

Responding directly on X, Sam George acknowledged the concern but emphasised the legal and institutional limitations of his office.

“I am impressed with the enthusiasm in your advocacy, but facts remain facts,” he wrote. “No Minister, except the Minister for Finance, through an instrument laid before Parliament, can REMOVE any tax or tariff handle as it affects government revenue.”

He added that tagging him repeatedly on social media would not change the legal reality, stating, “Until we get the Minister for Finance to approve the removal or reduction of sector-specific tariffs, it is all enthusiasm and not facts.”

Despite these constraints, the MP reassured the public that efforts are ongoing to address the cost of data.

He said discussions are underway with the Ministers for Finance and Energy to explore medium-term solutions, while the regulator is expected to roll out short-term policies to provide some immediate relief.

‘I believe NPP will come back into gov’t in 2028’ – Bawumia

0

Former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed a firm confidence in the party’s chances of returning to power in the 2028 general elections.

Addressing members of the NPP in London during a meeting with the party’s diaspora branch, Dr Bawumia stated that historical trends in Ghana’s political landscape favour opposition parties.

According to him, it has often been challenging for political parties in Ghana to win national elections with a fresh candidate after a sitting president has served two terms. He cited this pattern as a key factor behind his optimism.

“Our political history suggests that it is very difficult for a first-time presidential candidate to win an election in Ghana… so there is a sense that in 2028 NDC is going to bring a candidate for a first time, I believe we will have an advantage all things being equal over that new candidate coming in 2028,” he said.

He also explained that another key reason he believes the NPP will return to power is that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) may be unable to fulfil the numerous promises it made to Ghanaians before winning the 2024 election.

“In opposition, they made so many promises and told a lot of stories about what they were going to do, and now that they have come into government, they said that when they come, they will reduce the cost of living… prices are rather going up….,” Dr Bawumia noted.

The former Vice President also apologised to members of the party for the NPP’s disappointing performance in the last general elections.

“The NPP did a lot of work, there’s no doubt about that, but we did not get everything right. We got quite a few things wrong, and I think that, on my own behalf and on behalf of the party, I apologise to all of you for us not getting the figures right,” he said.

Despite the setback, Dr Bawumia expressed optimism about the future, stating:
“I believe that, by the grace of God, if we are given another opportunity, we will get many things right, because we have learnt the lessons that will guide us forward.”

Following the party’s landslide defeat in the 2024 elections, a 12-member committee led by former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye, conducted a probe into the causes of the defeat and has presented its findings to the party’s leadership.

However, the party has declined to disclose the contents of the report, arguing that it is not intended for public consumption.

In the elections, the NPP suffered significant losses in the presidential and parliamentary contests.

AGLOW Movement’s politicisation and its implications

0

AGLOW's activities suggest a movement that goes beyond spiritual fellowship AGLOW’s activities suggest a movement that goes beyond spiritual fellowship

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership and the current government seem to view AGLOW Movement as harmless, not considering it a significant threat.

However, a closer examination of the movement’s activities, mission, and history reveals a more complex agenda that aligns with the interests of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

It’s time for the NDC to reassess its stance and recognize AGLOW Movement for what it truly is – a movement with significant political implications.

Unpacking AGLOW’s True Nature

AGLOW International’s mission statement and activities suggest a movement that goes beyond spiritual fellowship. With a presence in over 300 fellowships across Ghana, the movement’s goals include:

– Mobilizing millions into a company of warriors and champions

– Establishing powerful Kingdom Communities founded on the fullness of Christ

– Empowering people to develop resources

– Forming apostolic teams that demonstrate the power of Heaven

– Cultivating a worldwide presence that creates an atmosphere of celebration, impartation, and restoration

Evidence of Politicization

Further investigation reveals troubling evidence:

– *Leadership Appointments*: Key leaders of AGLOW Movement have been appointed to various positions under erstwhile Kufuor and Akufo-Addo administrations.

– *Political Ambitions*: These leaders have allegedly used AGLOW as a platform to climb the political ladder, securing appointments and advancing their personal interests.

– *Exploitation of Members*: Gullible individuals, often poor and novice to politics, are being used to further the leaders’ agendas, generating income and securing their own financial futures.

The Politicization of AGLOW: A Concerning Trend

The leadership of AGLOW, particularly Gifty Afenyi Dadzie, has been associated with various positions during Nana Addo’s 8-year administration. This has sparked concerns about the movement’s alleged ties to the NPP and its potential impact on Ghana’s political landscape.

Perceived Connections

The perceived connection between AGLOW’s leadership and the NPP has raised questions about the movement’s true nature and its role in promoting political agendas. Critics argue that AGLOW’s activities and affiliations suggest a calculated effort to influence Ghana’s political landscape in favor of the NPP.

Implications and Concerns

The alleged politicization of AGLOW has significant implications for Ghana’s democracy and the role of spiritual organizations in politics. It raises concerns about:

– The potential exploitation of spiritual organizations for political gain

– The blurring of lines between spiritual and political agendas

– The impact on Ghana’s democratic processes and institutions

– The potential for spiritual organizations to be used as vehicles for political mobilization and manipulation

Lack of Accountability

Furthermore, there are concerns about the lack of accountability within AGLOW, with some questioning the movement’s financial dealings and decision-making processes. The fact that members seem reluctant to hold their leaders accountable for their actions has raised suspicions about the movement’s true intentions.

NPP’s Agenda

It appears that the NPP’s strategy involves forming groups that spread misinformation, utilizing graphic design and messaging to propagate negative narratives. Members and pastors are enlisted to do the dirty work through undisclosed channels. This strategy has been used in the past and is now being employed through social media messaging.

The Need for Action

It’s imperative that we stop this trend before it gains momentum and destroys the minds of people. If action is to be taken, it must be done now. We cannot allow the NPP to exploit spiritual organizations for their political gain, undermining the integrity of our democracy.

A Call for Transparency and Accountability

In light of these concerns, it’s essential to promote transparency and accountability in spiritual organizations and their interactions with political entities. This can help ensure that these organizations operate with integrity and in the best interests of their members and the broader community.

Conclusion

The politicization of AGLOW is a concerning trend that warrants closer scrutiny. As Ghanaians, it’s crucial that we demand transparency and accountability from our leaders, whether spiritual or political. By doing so, we can promote a more balanced and equitable political environment that serves the interests of all citizens. It is high time we as members of NDC and Government in power come to a conclusion that AGLOW is Political Movement and not a Fellowship. Ban them or see them as vigilante Group.

Recommendations

To address these concerns, it’s recommended that:

– AGLOW’s leadership provides clarity on their political affiliations and intentions

– The movement’s financial dealings and decision-making processes are made transparent

– Members of AGLOW demand accountability from their leaders

– Ghanaians remain vigilant and critically evaluate the activities of spiritual organizations

By taking these steps, we can ensure that spiritual organizations operate with integrity and serve the best interests of Ghanaians.

‘I am blessed with spiritual oil that commands money from people’

General Overseer of Heaven Way Chapel, Agraada General Overseer of Heaven Way Chapel, Agraada

General Overseer of Heaven Way Chapel, Evangelist Patricia Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agraada, has made a bold statement of how she commands money from anyone she wants.

In a video making waves on X, shared on May 18, 2025, Agraada who was seen delivering a sermon to her congregation noted that she is blessed with a spiritual oil and soap that gives her the authority to take money from people.

“I have always told you people I have power and grace. God has blessed us with lucky oil, spiritual soap, and cream which I use some. If you use it you have the power to tell anyone you want money from. You can command someone to empty her bank account for you,” she said.

Citing herself as an example, Nana Agraada, said she was able to command money from Sammy Gyamfi due to the spiritual soap and oil she possesses.

“If a pastor tells you she can give you money, let that pastor set an example for you to follow. God I has used Sammy Gyamfi as an example for everyone to know that there is power in this ministry.

“If you are watching me right now and your husband has refused to give you money, come to Heaven Way Chapel and God will use the anointing I possess to bless you,” she added.

Why past decongestion exercises in Kumasi failed

0

Chief Executive Officer of KMA, Richard Ofori Agyemang Chief Executive Officer of KMA, Richard Ofori Agyemang

The Chief Executive Officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Richard Ofori Agyemang, popularly known as King Zuba, has attributed the failure of past decongestion exercises in the Ashanti regional capital to unsustainable enforcement strategies.

In an interview on Joy FM and monitored by GhanaWeb on Monday, May 19, 2025, he indicated that the reliance on heavy police deployment could not be maintained over time, as it places a significant financial burden on the assembly.

“Previous decongestion exercises were not sustainable because of the approaches. Now, if we are to deploy about 300 police officers in and get everybody off the pavements, it will come at the cost to the assembly beyond three months when the financing assemblies no longer can accommodate the 300 policemen, so I thought of having a much more sustainable approach,” he noted.

Richard Ofori Agyemang explained that the KMA will deploy a combined team of urban guards, National Security operatives to patrol the cleared areas to ensure free flow of traffic.

“When I took over, there were about six great ladies and officers who were supporting us by leading our urban guards to manage security within the metropolis. I put them together with a team of about two National Security operatives and some city guards. We are patrolling the areas that we have asked the people to leave just so we can have free flow of traffic in the central business districts.

“Those are the ways that we tend to do this decongestion without it biting too much on people who do informal trading activity within the commercial metropolis, and I think we are getting good results,” he added.

The KMA announced a decongestion exercise on Monday, May 5, 2025.

The exercise will involve the demolition of unauthorised structures, and the seizure of goods and items displayed on pavements.

Speaking recently to journalists in Kumasi, the Kumasi Mayor emphasised that the exercise will focus on key areas such as the Kejetia Roundabout, also known as the Otumfuo Roundabout, and the Adehyeman area near the Kumasi Zoo.

“We will ensure that everyone occupying those spaces is removed. Any metallic object placed on the street will be cleared,” he stated.

Bokpin questions feasibility of NDC’s 24-Hour Economy amid energy challenges

0

File photo of Ghanaian economist, Prof Godfred Alufar Bokpin. File photo of Ghanaian economist, Prof Godfred Alufar Bokpin.

Ghanaian economist, Professor Godfred Alufar Bokpin, has questioned the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) capacity for the much touted 24-Hour Economy promise to Ghanaians, arguing that it is unrealistic given the ongoing energy sector struggles.

Prof Bokpin noted that the country is already grappling with sustaining a reliable eight-hour energy cycle, making an expansion to a 24-Hour Economy impractical under current conditions.

“You are not even getting power for your eight-hour economy cycle that we are running, and you are talking about a 24-Hour Economy,” he remarked.

According to a report by adomonline.com on May 19, 2025, he identified Ghana’s energy sector as a significant threat to economic stability, pointing to systemic inefficiencies within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), including distribution losses of nearly 40% – a figure that he said is almost three times the global average.

“That is not sustainable. Even at 15%, losses are excessively high. With such inefficiencies, realistic pricing becomes nearly impossible,” he explained.

Prof Bokpin also highlighted collection losses estimated at approximately 15% and criticised the failure of some government ministries, departments, and agencies to pay for electricity usage. He described these technical and financial inefficiencies as major obstacles to progress in the power sector.

He also highlighted public concerns over questionable electricity usage by certain state institutions, stressing the need for greater accountability.

Despite these challenges, political promises continue, often disregarding the structural weaknesses within the sector.

“That’s why I don’t understand the upbeat tone from the government. Here you have a government talking about a 24-Hour Economy, yet we are struggling to run an eight-hour one,” he added.

Prof Bokpin called for private sector involvement in ECG’s distribution and billing processes—not through full privatisation, but by injecting capital and operational efficiency.

“The government can remain the sole shareholder, but we should allow the private sector to participate in power distribution and revenue collection,” he suggested.

He noted that these reforms align with Ghana’s ongoing IMF-supported program, which includes structural targets the government must meet. A cabinet decision on ECG’s future is expected soon.

Prof Bokpin warned that unless the government tackles the underlying challenges in the energy sector, ambitious policy slogans like the 24-hour economy will remain mere rhetoric, lacking practical foundation.

Nigeria’s fierce political rivals share joke at pope’s inaugural mass

0

Tinubu and Obi were presidential rivals in 2023, while Fayemi supported Tinubu Tinubu and Obi were presidential rivals in 2023, while Fayemi supported Tinubu

Fierce Nigerian political rivals Peter Obi and President Bola Tinubu were seen laughing and joking at Pope Leo XIV’s inaugural mass in Rome.

Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress defeated Obi of the Labour Party in the heated and tightly contested 2023 presidential election – a victory Obi challenged at the Supreme Court without success.

The pair’s supporters have expressed bitter rivalry towards each other over the years, both on social media and on the streets, with some physical clashes occurring prior to the elections.

Tinubu and Obi are expected to go head-to-head again in less than two years’ time as Nigeria prepares for another election in 2027.

Photos of the meeting were shared by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga on social media, who recounted what transpired when Obi and a former governor greeted the Nigerian president after seeing him at the event.

“Mr President, welcome to our church, and thank you for honouring the Pope with your presence,” said former Ekiti state governor Kayode Fayemi.

Both Obi and Fayemi are Catholics, while Tinubu is Muslim.

However, President Tinubu responded: “I should be the one welcoming you and Peter. I’m the head of the Nigerian delegation.”

The president’s response elicited laughter from Obi, who agreed.

“Yes, indeed. We are members of your delegation,” Obi said.

Despite the memorable encounter, Obi did not mention it in his long post on X about his visit to the Vatican.

Alkassim Hussain, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, told the BBC that the light-hearted meeting was good for the country’s politics and should help reduce tension.

“They portrayed a good image of the country, and that’s how politics should be played – without bitterness.

“I hope supporters of both Tinubu and Obi can see that after elections and court cases, it is all about the country and how everyone can join hands together to grow it,” he noted.

Tinubu won the 2023 elections after the opposition was split between the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party.

There is speculation that the two parties could form a coalition in 2027 to challenge Tinubu, who is expected to seek a second term.

Elections are often marred by violence in Nigeria, with hundreds of people losing their lives since the country’s return to democracy in 1999.

Prestea Mine Workers Go Wild

0

Some of the aggrieved workers

Workers of the Prestea-Bogoso Mine in the Western Region have called for the immediate termination of the mining lease granted to Heat Goldfields.

Heat Goldfields, a mining company that recently assumed ownership of the Prestea-Bogoso Mine, took over operations in November 2024 from Future Gold Resources (FGR), whose ownership of the gold mine was revoked.

The workers have accused Heat Goldfields of breaching its contractual obligations. They alleged that the company had failed to pay workers’ salaries since December 2024 and had been involved in questionable activities on-site.

According to the workers, only about 30 percent have received partial salaries since December 2024. They also claimed that, despite repeated assurances, Heat Goldfields has failed to engage with them or formally introduce itself since assuming control of the mine.

Richard Amoah Baidoo, the Safety Officer at the mine, expressed concerns about the lack of transparency and unpaid entitlements.

“We are urging the government to clarify who owns the Bogoso-Prestea Mine lease and for that entity to settle our outstanding debts, including salaries, SSNIT contributions, end-of-contract benefits, rent allowances, bonuses, and other entitlements, so that there will be peace in the community,” he stated.

“Some workers are even questioning the validity of the mining lease due to the secrecy surrounding the issue,” he added.

He further alleged that Heat Goldfields has tampered with essential equipment, including processing machines, the gold room, and has removed gold concentrates under unclear circumstances.

In response, the Chief Administrator of Heat Goldfields, Kwabena Ohene Obeng, denied the claims of mismanagement, attributing the company’s challenges to a series of legal battles.

“We have faced numerous lawsuits and injunctions hindering our work since taking over. While the plant does require refurbishment, plans are underway to address this,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has visited the mine site and assured the workers of the government’s support in finding a lasting solution to their grievances.

Government’s plan to relocate some agencies to other regions apt – Former MP

0

Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Dickson Adomako Kissi Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Dickson Adomako Kissi

The former Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Dickson Adomako Kissi, has backed President John Dramani Mahama’s plan to extend government ministerial installations beyond the Greater Accra Region into the Eastern and Volta Regions.

The plan to move selected governmental agencies to other regions aims to mitigate Accra’s overpopulation, flooding, and traffic congestion by decentralising some governmental offices.

Speaking on GH One on May 19, 2025, Adomako Kissi supported the president’s plan, stating that it would not only reduce congestion in the Greater Accra Region but also serve as a catalyst for development in other parts of the country.

“I think this move by the president is important because it will curb the mass migration of young professionals to urban cities in search of jobs. Only, I was thinking it would be in one place, like relocating some government facilities to an area beyond Nsawam and Suhum but I learned that it would be in three different regions. In all, I think its laudable and the same strategy could be replicated in other regions as well,” he said.

“As Chairman Wontumi would put it ‘we are bringing Dubai to Ghana. So, if we are bringing Dubai to Ghana, there will be no need to move from Ghana to Dubai’. Instead of moving from rural areas to urban cities, this initiative would bring urban opportunities to less developed regions,” he added.

Adomako Kissi’s reaction follows President John Mahama’s decision to move some government offices to neighbouring regions to ease congestion in the Greater Accra Region.

“I believe that this city will be located somewhere on the Accra plains from Bundasi, straddling across Greater Accra, Eastern Region and Volta regions. The city will straddle three regions,” President Mahama stated in his remarks at a grand durbar of the Chiefs and People of the Greater Accra Region at Dodowa, during the NDC’s Thank You Tour on May 16, 2025.

The “Thank You Tour” was to enable the President to express gratitude to the Chiefs and People of the Greater Accra Region and Ghanaians for their massive support for him and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general election.

Suspected notorious carjacking ringleader Solomon Siaw Tetteh arrested

0

Solomon Siaw Tetteh, the alleged ringleader of a carjacking syndicate operating in the Krobo enclave, has been arrested after being placed on the police wanted list for a series of car theft incidents.

Tetteh narrowly escaped arrest last week when police laid an ambush at his residence in Nuaso, a suburb of Odumase. During that operation, three of his accomplices were apprehended to assist with ongoing investigations.

However, his luck ran out on Sunday, May 18, when intelligence gathered by investigators led to his arrest at another hideout in Nuaso, located in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region.

Solomon and his gang are alleged to have stolen vehicles from areas including Nkurakan, Asesewa, Somanya, and Ada Magazine. The stolen vehicles were reportedly dismantled and converted into coal pots.

While transporting the suspect to the Koforidua Divisional Police Headquarters, officers were forced to change their route. They diverted from the Nkurakan-Asaman road and used the Koforidua Agavenya stretch after learning that a group of youth in Nkurakan had blocked the main Koforidua road, allegedly intent on lynching the suspect due to his involvement in thefts in the area.

At the police station, Tetteh was paraded alongside several of the vehicles and tricycles he allegedly stole. He denied all charges, even in the presence of some victims who had gathered at the station.

Police say investigations are ongoing and efforts are underway to apprehend other individuals connected to the case. The suspect will be arraigned before court once investigations are concluded.

Authorities at Osei Kyeretwie SHS using informants to fish out students possessing firearms

0

Authorities at Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School are using intelligence to root out students in possession of firearms on the school premises.

The institution has caused the arrest of a second-year student for allegedly having in his custody a locally manufactured gun.

According to Headmaster, Michael Mensah, the approach has to be a clandestine one.

“They were even girls who came to me to tell me that they suspect one guy is holding a gun. So quickly, I called the assistant head, domestic. We didn’t want to blow it out of proportion because at times when it happens like that and you bump into them, he may decide to hide the thing,” he said.

A search for the student on the night had to be aborted as he stayed late outside the campus.

Acting on information, a dawn search at the dormitory proved futile, subsequently leading them to the classroom as another option.

“Luckily for us, we saw under his desk this gun. So the gun was hidden under his desk, thinking that in the night, where we may probably search may be the dormitory… but he was nowhere to be found,” Mr Mensah explained.

However, acting on more information, “we caught him in the morning and then quickly I put him in my car… and took him and the gun to the Tafo Divisional Police Headquarters.”

This incident comes weeks after a student, Suzy Pinamang of Adventist Senior High School, was shot in the eye by a classmate.

Nana Yaw Gyimah reports that the 16-year-old OKESS student is currently in police custody for unlawfully possessing a locally made pistol.

The mystery surrounding Nana Romeo’s left hand and why he didn’t hit Kumchacha

The now-infamous altercation between Accra FM presenter Nana Romeo and Prophet Kumchacha on United Showbiz took many viewers by surprise. As tensions soared and voices escalated, Kumchacha launched a physical confrontation, grabbing Nana Romeo’s shirt and threatening to beat him over a disagreement surrounding media ethics and respect.

But what left many wondering was why Nana Romeo, known for his assertive commentary, remained unusually calm and restrained—despite the clear provocation. He has now broken his silence on The Delay Show, offering insight into his composure, the influence of his daughter, and a chilling mystery surrounding his left hand.

“With my issue with Kumchacha, I was gentle because of my daughter. She is my everything. Whatever action I’d take, I picture her,” Romeo revealed in the interview. “My daughter is internet-savvy; she’d definitely ask me what happened if she saw the video. Had it not been for her, I swear to God that it would have been messy with Kumchacha.”

Romeo went on to disclose a personal story tied to a warning he received from his father—one that has stayed with him for years.

“I don’t hit people with my left hand. The first and last time I did, the case ended up at the police station. It happened in Cote D’Ivoire. The person’s ear was affected. Since then, my father advised me never to use that hand on anyone again.”

According to the radio presenter, there’s something he himself doesn’t fully understand about the power or consequence associated with his left hand. “I don’t know the mystery surrounding it, but I know when it hits you, it’s not a pleasant scene,” he added.

This personal reflection sheds new light on his decision not to retaliate when Kumchacha confronted him during the broadcast. What many viewers perceived as passivity was, in reality, a conscious act of restraint—one guided by family, wisdom, and a deep fear of what could have gone wrong.

The clash itself stemmed from a fiery exchange over Kumchacha’s earlier remarks criticizing media personality Vim Lady. Romeo had defended Vim Lady’s credibility and condemned Kumchacha’s comments, which led to a string of accusations and insults between the two. Kumchacha accused Romeo of being a hypocrite and misleading the public, especially in his handling of commentary around figures like Captain Smart, Bishop Salifu, and the late Akua Donkor.

At the height of the exchange, Kumchacha stormed at Romeo, vowing to end his career and teach him a lesson. But Romeo’s calm—though unexpected—may have prevented the night from turning into full-blown chaos.

‘You blamed Akufo-Addo, now it’s you’ – Netizens criticise Mahama over flooding remarks

0

Some residents affected by the flood Some residents affected by the flood

Some social media users have criticised President John Dramani Mahama over the recent downpour on May 18, 2025, which resulted in widespread flooding across several parts of the Greater Accra Region.

According to the critics, President Mahama is now facing the very issue he once used to criticise former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for, urban flooding.

Netizens have dug up old posts from Mahama during his time in opposition, where he blamed the previous government for failing to address flooding challenges.

Now, with Mahama in office, they say little has changed, and Ghana is still grappling with the same perennial floods.

“Talk is cheap. This is what you said when you were in opposition. By the way, while your compatriots suffer from the devastating effects of flooding, your Defense Minister, Edward Omane Boamah, and Stan Xoese Dogbe, a close confidant and Deputy Chief of Staff, are openly discussing football on social media.

“How insensitive can they be to the suffering of the very people who voted for you?” a user wrote.

Another user stated, “Mahama blamed flooding in Ghana on Akufo-Addo, then wasted government resources on an Anti-Flooding Committee that duplicates the role of NADMO. Yet, we are still experiencing floods. This is beyond cluelessness. What a useless government!”

“In 2019, floods in Accra were blamed on Akufo-Addo by the NDC. Now that Mahama is in charge and Accra is still flooding, is it fair to say he’s also failed?” another questioned.

Others also criticized the President’s recent Anti-Flood Taskforce, which was set up in March 2025 to tackle the problem, “The Anti-Flood Taskforce to Combat Recurring Floods, set up by President Mahama, includes:

1.Stan Dogbe – Chairman

2.Minister for Water Resources, Works & Housing

3.Minister for Local Government

4.National Security Coordinator

5.Deputy Director General of NADMO

6.Marietta Brew, Legal Counsel to the President and Secretary to the Taskforce.”

Their comments come in the wake of yet another flood disaster in Accra, as heavy rainfall on Sunday, May 18, 2025, brought the capital and its surrounding municipalities to a standstill.

The downpour, which began around 3:00 pm and lasted nearly three hours, flooded neighborhoods including Ofankor Barrier, Weija, Kaneshie, Labadi, First Light, Dzorwulu, Adabraka, Adentan-Dodowa, and parts of Tema. Severe flooding was reported in the Adjei-Kojo Kanewu area of the Tema West Municipality.

Major roads were rendered inaccessible, including the stretch between Awudome Roundabout and Awudome Cemetery, with the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange completely submerged.

Several vehicles broke down in the floodwaters, forcing local youth to step in and assist stranded drivers, helping to prevent accidents near open drains and potholes hidden beneath the water.

The situation worsened during the evening rush hour, leaving many commuters stranded for hours.

The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has inaugurated a 13-member Board of Directors for the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), describing the body as a strategic vehicle for achieving effective currency management and enhancing the country’s economic resilience.

Swearing in the members at a brief ceremony on May 19, 2025, Dr Forson congratulated the newly constituted board on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and expressed confidence in their ability to deliver on the Board’s mandate.

He highlighted the remarkable turnaround in the performance of Ghana’s currency, stating:

“As of May 13, 2025, the Ghana cedi has solidified its position as the standout performer among global currencies, achieving a remarkable 16.7% appreciation against the US dollar year-to-date. This marks a significant reversal from the 13.4% depreciation recorded during the same period in 2024, with the cedi earning recognition as the top-performing currency in April 2025.”

Dr Forson attributed the sustained rally of the cedi to a combination of robust monetary and fiscal policy coordination, improved forex inflows from gold, cocoa, and remittances, and disciplined public financial management.

He further noted that the record-high foreign exchange reserves at the Bank of Ghana, which have surpassed IMF programme targets ahead of schedule, underscore the sustainability of the cedi’s recent performance.

In his remarks, the Chairperson of the newly inaugurated board, Kojo Fynn, assured that the board would serve with humility, uphold the highest standards of good governance, and actively engage all stakeholders in the execution of its duties.

He acknowledged the significant responsibilities enshrined in the Gold Board’s enabling Act and pledged the board’s full commitment to fulfilling its mandate.

Court of Appeal dismisses NAM1’s application to halt criminal trial

0

The Court of Appeal has dismissed an application filed by the Chief Executive Officer of defunct Menzgold Ghana Limited, Nana Appiah Mensah, widely known as NAM1, which sought to halt his ongoing criminal trial.

The application was filed pending the determination of an appeal challenging a High Court ruling that ordered him to open his defence.

In 2024, the High Court directed Nana Appiah Mensah to open his defence in a criminal case in which he faces multiple charges, including the sale of gold without a license, fraudulent breach of trust, defrauding by false pretence, and money laundering.

His legal team subsequently filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal, seeking to overturn the High Court’s ruling.

Alongside the appeal, they applied to stay proceedings at the High Court pending the outcome of the appeal.

On Monday, May 19, 2025, state prosecutors urged the appellate court to dismiss the application, arguing that it was an attempt to overreach the powers of the court and failed to establish any exceptional circumstances to justify a stay of proceedings.

A three-member panel of the Court of Appeal presided over by Justice Gbiel Suurbaareh and supported by Justices Afia Serwaa Asare-Botwe and Christopher Archer, unanimously dismissed the application.

Meanwhile, Frederick Forson, a spokesperson for the aggrieved customers of Menzgold, has welcomed the court’s decision, describing it as a step toward justice.

Nana Appiah Mensah, however, has indicated that he is considering a further appeal to the Supreme Court, based on legal advice from his counsel.

Ghana sets deadline for Starlink compliance

0

Samuel George, Ghana’s minister for communication, digital technology and innovations, has issued a one-month deadline for Starlink to comply with national regulations.

SpaceX’s satellite Internet service, Starlink, started operating in Ghana in August 2024; however, it doesn’t have a physical office or customer support system, and the Ghanaian government wants that to change quickly.

“Starlink must establish a local office in Ghana to ensure effective communication and decision-making,” the minister said.

He added that Starlink needs to establish a local support center and a toll-free number to address customer complaints and provide assistance.

“Starlink must comply with Ghana’s regulatory framework, including licensing and tax requirements,” George continued.

The minister assured Starlink of his willingness to explore potential opportunities for collaboration, particularly in the rural areas where connectivity is limited, after the regulatory compliance requirements are fulfilled.

George also highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in driving digital transformation and innovation in Ghana.

He added that while Ghana welcomes innovation, compliance with the law is non-negotiable.

Starlink’s African regulatory problems

Related:Botswana could get Starlink services

Even though Starlink has found success in several African countries, it has met with challenges in others.

For instance, in South Africa, local ownership rules hamper its plans to access a license.

SpaceX initially planned to participate in public hearings held by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) earlier this year, but it withdrew from the hearings at the eleventh hour.

South Africa is one of only a few Southern African countries where Starlink is not yet operational.

Even though the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) last year ordered Starlink to cease operations in the country, citing the company’s lack of a required telecommunications license, Starlink’s availability map shows plans for a 2025 entry.

Starlink’s African growth

Elon Musk’s company has made entry in many countries on the continent, with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) being the latest country to grant it an operating license earlier this month.

The service has also made inroads in other East African countries like KenyaSouth Sudan, Rwanda and Burundi.

Starlink received a license in Somalia in April 2025 and has also reached an agreement with authorities in Chad and Guinea-Bissau. The service is already available in BotswanaZimbabweZambiaMalawiMozambique, Eswatini, the Southeast African island of Madagascar and Lesotho.

Although Ghana is demanding that Starlink comply with its regulation, in West Africa Starlink is already available in NigeriaNiger, Liberia, BeninSierra Leone and the island nation of Cape Verde. Starlink has not had any launches yet in North Africa or Central Africa.

‘I am sorry’ – Bawumia apologises to NPP members over 2024 election defeat

0

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

Former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has publicly apologised to members of the party for the NPP’s disappointing performance in the last general elections.

Speaking during an address in London, United Kingdom, Dr Bawumia acknowledged that the NPP made several missteps which contributed to substantial losses in key constituencies.

Prepare for more heavy rains – GMet tells Ghanaians

0

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued a warning that the country should expect continued heavy and frequent rainfall in the coming days.

The advisory follows a recent rainstorm that triggered flooding in parts of the Greater Accra Region, including Pantang, Nsawam, Lakeside, and Kasoa.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, May 19, Felicity Ahafianyo, Head of GMet’s Central Analysis and Forecast Office, stressed the need for heightened public awareness during the ongoing rainy period.

She advised residents in flood-prone areas to consider relocating, noting that the seasonal downpours have already begun.

“When we came out with the seasonal forecast, we indicated that it is likely the intensity may be more or higher, and in terms of the frequency, too, it is something that we need to be abreast with. It has started already. As we witnessed yesterday along the coast,” she said.

“On Friday, we had a similar event in the Volta Region, where it also rained for more than an hour. This is how it is going to be until we end the major rainy season over the southern sector,” she added.

Ahafianyo also called on the media to support GMet’s efforts by regularly sharing weather updates to help keep the public informed and prepared.

Editor of Newscenta Newspaper, Elvis Darko, has voiced skepticism over the long-term impact of the Ghana Immigration Service’s (GIS) recent swoop that led to the arrest of over 2,200 foreign nationals engaged in street begging in Accra. Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, May 19, Darko cautioned that unless the root causes—particularly Ghana’s porous borders—are addressed, the issue will re-emerge within months.

“If the Immigration Service carries these people out of the country, I give you three months—they will be back,” Darko warned. “The borders are porous. Nothing strategic is being done to properly secure them.”

On Friday, May 16, GIS conducted a major operation in Accra, rounding up 2,241 undocumented foreigners, including 909 adults and 1,332 children, many of whom were involved in begging and hawking. While the move received praise from some quarters, Darko questioned its sustainability and criticized public institutions for failing to implement lasting solutions.

“We talk too much instead of doing the right thing, and that is our problem. Public institutions love to talk, but when it comes to actually doing their jobs, it becomes an issue,” he said.

Darko urged the government to shift focus from one-off street operations to developing a comprehensive border management strategy. He emphasized the importance of tightening border control, improving surveillance infrastructure, and ensuring inter-agency collaboration.

“The issue should be focused on the state of Ghana’s borders. How do people enter this country without documentation? What do we need to do to fix our borders to ensure people enter rightfully?”

He added that without bold reforms and investment in border security, Ghana risks a perpetual cycle of ineffective enforcement efforts.

“Until the state sits up and adopts a border management strategy and invests in it, this cycle will continue. We will be doing the same swoops every three years because the real problem has not been fixed.”

Darko’s remarks underscore growing concerns among analysts and civil society about the structural weaknesses in Ghana’s immigration and border systems, which continue to undermine national security and public order.

President John Dramani Mahama and suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Torkornoo play videoPresident John Dramani Mahama and suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Torkornoo

Former Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, has questioned President John Dramani Mahama over the suspension and possible removal of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Torkornoo.

According to her, the basis on which the Chief Justice has suffered the suspension lacks substance and does not justify such a decision.

Speaking in an interview on Movement TV on May 17, 2025, Abubakar questioned the president’s treatment of the Chief Justice, asking whether he would be pleased if he were subjected to the same actions.

She also asserted that some of the reasons cited against the Chief Justice could equally apply to the President himself, should a removal process be initiated against him.

“President Mahama, if what he is doing is done to him, would he be happy? Or we sit in this country and pretend we don’t know that the President’s spouse uses state funds to purchase flight tickets for her travels?” she asked.

She continued, “I am saying this based on the fact that the Chief Justice is not an administrative officer for the Executive. The Chief Justice is the head of the Judiciary, and all judicial power is vested in the Judiciary, as stated in Article 125(3) of the Constitution.”

Abubakar further argued that if someone were to file impeachment proceedings against the President for allowing the First Lady, who holds no elected or constitutionally mandated position, to use state funds for travel, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would strongly protest.

“Today, I ask: should someone file impeachment proceedings against the president because the First Lady, whom we have neither voted for nor appointed to any official position, is using state funds to purchase flight tickets for her travels?

“Yet, when this happens, it is only the young NDC members who raise concerns about her flying business class.”
