The passing-out parade of the 7th batch of the 2025 Police Recruits at the Tesano Police Training School in Accra witnessed Sophia Elikplim Dedjoe topping the national police recruits to become the Overall Best Graduate.

Policewoman Sergeant (PW/SGT) Sophia Elikplim Dedjoe was born on February 9, 1996, to Mr. and Mrs. Dedjoe in Tebgbi, Keta, Volta Region. This is not political patronage, but merit based

Sir Sam Jonah is a prominent Ghanaian business leader Sir Sam Jonah is a prominent Ghanaian business leader

Prominent Ghanaian business leader Sir Sam Jonah has noted that the acquisition of the Black Volta Gold Project is based on merit, without any political favouritism.

He dismissed suggestions that Engineers & Planners secured the project based on political affiliation.

According to him, the deal reflects a long overdue transformation for Ghana’s large-scale mining sector.

Despite ongoing controversies, Sam Jonah noted that the deal is a legitimate business move, while emphasising the viable options for Ghana.

He was speaking at a ceremony to celebrate the $100 million financing agreement between Engineers & Planners and ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID).

“Let us be clear: this is not a favour. This is not political patronage. This is not crony capitalism.

“Today, we are not merely here to witness the signing of a facility agreement. We are here to celebrate a milestone, affirm a vision, and embrace a bold new chapter in Ghana’s economic story, led not by foreign interests, but by our own,” he said.

Sam Jonah reiterated that the deal was signed in October 2023 “with no fanfare, no interference, and no backroom dealing”, noting that the deal is grounded in “merit, backed by a strong balance sheet, and grounded in solid business fundamentals”.

He also lauded the efforts of the founder of E&P, Ibrahim Mahama, in advocating for Ghana’s mining value chain and securing value for Ghana. Jonah said his dream for local mining is being materialised through E&P.

“You are living out my dream. A dream I’ve held for decades. A dream that many believed was too ambitious. Back then, I told him and his partner that while alluvial gold mining was unlikely to yield sustainable returns, hard rock mining was the future… That young man listened. He built a company. He earned the respect of the industry,” he said.

Beyond celebrating the achievement, Sam Jonah said the Black Volta Gold project should be seen as a milestone for the local mining sector.

“Ownership matters. Equity matters. And national pride demands that we do more to ensure that our people are at the heart of our mineral wealth. Our entrepreneurs are not lacking in talent. What they often lack is access: access to capital, access to opportunity, and access to policy support,” he said.

Crude oil below $70 threatens Ghana’s 2025 revenue targets – Ben Nsiah

0

Ben Nsiah, Executive Director of the Centre for Environment and Sustainable Energy Ben Nsiah, Executive Director of the Centre for Environment and Sustainable Energy

The Executive Director of the Centre for Environmental Management and Sustainable Energy (CEMSE), Ben Nsiah, has raised concerns about the potential economic impact of falling global oil prices on Ghana’s revenue projections for 2025.

According to him, if crude oil prices continue to remain below $70 per barrel, it could undermine Ghana’s financial outlook.

Speaking exclusively to GhanaWeb Business on Monday, July 7, 2025, Nsiah said the drop in prices would result in reduced earnings from Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector.

He noted that a sustained dip below the $70 benchmark would ultimately affect revenue projections and could potentially disrupt the ongoing appreciation and stabilisation of the cedi against the dollar.

“It is not in the interest of Ghana, especially at the upstream level, to keep prices below $70 per barrel, because at the same time we are losing both on the output of the product and on the appreciation of the cedi against the dollar. So, in the upstream sector, this is likely going to affect us in terms of revenue projections,” he stated.

He added that lower global crude prices would lead to a reduction in the prices of finished petroleum products in the downstream sector.

This, he believes, is good news for consumers and commuters, as stable or reduced fuel prices would largely avert agitations for fare increases.

“When prices continue to stay low, export prices will not be that high, and this will favour petroleum users, especially commuters, because there will not be any agitations for price or fare increments locally,” he explained.

CoreWeave to buy Core Scientific in $9 billion deal to meet AI power needs

0

CoreWeave (CRWV.O) will buy crypto miner Core Scientific (CORZ.O) in an all-stock deal valued at about $9 billion, it said on Monday, as AI infrastructure firms race to secure the energy and data center capacity needed to power surging demand.

Bitcoin miners’ energy-intensive sites and power contracts, built during the crypto boom, have emerged as prime targets for AI companies expanding their computing infrastructure.

The deal will help in the immediate elimination of more than $10 billion of cumulative future lease overhead to be paid for existing contractual sites over the next 12 years, CoreWeave said.

The offer values Core Scientific at $20.40 per share, representing a premium of around 66% to the stock’s closing price before reports of deal talks surfaced in late June.

Core Scientific’s shares fell 22% in morning trading, while Nvidia (NVDA.O) backed CoreWeave was last down 4.5%.

Core Scientific stockholders will receive 0.1235 newly issued CoreWeave stock for each share they hold.

“This acquisition accelerates our strategy to deploy AI and HPC (high-performance computing) workloads at scale,” said CoreWeave CEO Michael Intrator.

The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter, and the final price will be determined at that time.

PIVOT GATHERS PACE

Bitcoin miners have tapped into the AI boom to diversify beyond cryptocurrency, leasing power and data center space to meet soaring demand from AI workloads.

The acquisition is expected to set the bar for bitcoin miners looking to pivot to AI, Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani told Reuters, adding that power remains the biggest constraint for AI data center expansion.

“CoreWeave gets full control of Core Scientific’s entire 1.3 GW power contracted and future pipeline,” Chhugani said.

Founded as an Ethereum-focused crypto miner in 2017, CoreWeave pivoted to AI a few years later. It shuttered its mining business after “The Merge”, Ethereum’s 2022 upgrade, slashed rewards for miners.

CoreWeave’s revenue has grown at breakneck speed, climbing more than eight-fold last year, according to its IPO prospectus.

The deal also marks a turnaround for Core Scientific, which filed for bankruptcy in late 2022 following a sharp drop in bitcoin prices and soaring energy costs.

The company emerged from bankruptcy in early 2024 and, like several other bitcoin miners, has looked to lean on the AI boom to power growth.

Core Scientific first received an unsolicited, non-binding takeover offer from CoreWeave in June 2024. At the time, the company rejected the offer, saying it was significantly undervalued.

The two companies later signed a series of 12-year contracts, including one under which Core Scientific agreed to provide CoreWeave with about 200 MW of infrastructure to power its high-performance computing services.

CoreWeave, which provides access to data centers and Nvidia-powered AI chips, has a market value of about $79 billion, according to LSEG data.

Goldman Sachs is CoreWeave’s adviser, while Moelis and PJT Partners are the financial advisers to Core Scientific.

Akwatia MP’s seat draped in red as Parliament mourns his passing

The seat of Ernest Kumi draped in red cloth The seat of Ernest Kumi draped in red cloth

The First Deputy Minority Whip, Habib Iddrisu, has draped the seat of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, in red cloth as a solemn tribute following his passing on Monday, July 7, 2025.

Ernest Kumi, a first-time MP elected on the ticket of the NPP, had recently emerged from a high-profile legal battle over the legitimacy of his election.

His sudden passing comes just weeks after the Supreme Court overturned his contempt conviction related to the disputed 2024 parliamentary election results.

In February 2025, the Koforidua High Court found him guilty of contempt for defying an interim injunction that barred him from presenting himself for swearing-in.

A bench warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest after he repeatedly failed to attend court hearings and allegedly disregarded judicial authority.

His passing brings an abrupt end to a turbulent but determined political journey, leaving the Akwatia seat vacant once again.

PM Modi seeks deeper India-Ghana partnership

0

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed India’s commitment to strengthening economic and strategic ties with Ghana, citing shared post-colonial histories and the need for renewed cooperation amid shifting global dynamics.

“India is ready to elevate its ties with Ghana to a comprehensive partnership,” Modi said in an address to Parliament during a two-day working visit to Ghana as part of a five-nation tour.

He acknowledged similarities in both countries’ post-independence development paths and said India aims to deepen collaboration across sectors.

The Indian Prime Minister also addressed broader international issues, noting that the global order established after the Second World War is undergoing rapid transformation. He said technological change, demographic shifts and the Global South’s rise are contributing to its scale and pace.

He pointed out that challenges, such as colonial rule, that existed in earlier centuries persist in different forms, contributing to ongoing inequity in global systems. In addition, he warned that global challenges ranging from climate change and pandemics to terrorism and cybersecurity are exposing the limitations of institutions designed in the last century.

It is in the light of these developments that he said: “The changing circumstances demand credible and effective reforms in global governance. Progress cannot come without giving voice to the Global South. We need more than slogans”.

Prime Minister Modi, for instance, stated that India’s G20 presidency prioritised Africa’s inclusiveness at the global level – leading to the AU becoming a permanent G20 member.

He mentioned India’s growing global contribution to the rest of the world, citing its vaccine support during the COVID-19 era and contribution to addressing climate change and sustainability efforts, among others.

His visit to Ghana is part of broader efforts to enhance South-South cooperation and position India as a key partner for African countries in trade, infrastructure, health and technology.

Already, India and Ghana have committed to deepening bilateral relations with a particular focus on trade, investment, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and digital infrastructure, according to Dammu Ravi, Secretary (Economic Relations) at India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Addressing journalists in Accra following high-level talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, Mr. Ravi described the visit as “timely and strategic”, coming at a moment when Ghana is rebounding economically and seeking deeper global partnerships.

“Both leaders set an ambitious target of increasing bilateral trade from the current US$3billion to US$6billion over the next five years,” he said, adding that India is already among Ghana’s largest investors with over US$2billion in investments.

Mr. Ravi indicated that India’s investment footprint in Ghana includes roughly 900 active Indian companies, though current investments remain modest. “India’s concessional finance lines and grants also contribute significantly to Ghana’s economy,” he noted.

He added that India and Ghana signed four key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) during the visit, establishing a Joint commission and cooperation in traditional medicine, a cultural exchange programme and an agreement on standards.

“These MoUs provide strong frameworks to deepen economic engagement and facilitate more structured collaboration in trade, health and culture,” he said.

He said both countries see potential in expanding trade in pharmaceuticals, renewable energy and agriculture.

Pharma, food security and manufacturing

He noted that President Mahama sought India’s support to position Ghana as a food basket in the sub-region, an idea Prime Minister Modi welcomed.

“The Ghanaian side also showed strong interest in hosting vaccine and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities and India is ready to support with its world-class pharma capabilities,” Mr. Ravi said.

He explained that some collaboration is already underway with global vaccine players and that Indian entrepreneurs are being encouraged to invest in Ghana’s local production.

Critical minerals

In addition, the country’s rich deposits of critical minerals – including unexplored resources – offer another area for collaboration.

“President Mahama invited India to bring its mining expertise and entrepreneurship to support sustainable exploration and value addition in Ghana,” he said.

Defence

Mr. Ravi also addressed growing security concerns stemming from instability in the Sahel region and coastal piracy.

He confirmed that India is already training Ghanaian defence personnel and is open to expanding support through equipment sourcing and counter-terrorism collaboration.

“Terrorism is a global challenge and India stands ready to work with Ghana in protecting its sovereignty and regional stability,” he affirmed.

24-hour economy

Mr. Ravi also acknowledged Ghana’s 24-hour economy policy and said both leaders discussed practical models.

He cited India’s experience of introducing shift-based operations in the health and education sectors as a possible reference point for Ghana.

“These exchanges offer valuable learning for both sides and could guide future collaborations,” he noted.

BRICS

Responding to Ghana’s interest in joining BRICS, Mr. Ravi explained that expansion is a consensus-based process but affirmed India’s readiness to support Ghana’s aspirations in future rounds.

Policeman stabbed in brazen daytime attack at McCarthy Hill

0

A policeman was on Monday stabbed by a suspected criminal at Lower McCarthy Hill in Accra.

The policeman, identified as Sammy, was accompanying his children to school when he was attacked suddenly by the suspect with a knife.

In an attempt to disarm the criminal, the policeman (Sammy) shot several times at close range at him, but the bullet did not hit the target, as the suspect was said to have fortified himself with some black power (juju).

It was after the failed attempt to subdue the suspect that he tried to take the pistol away from the policeman who held on to it firmly.

According to an eyewitness, it was in the ensuing struggle that the policeman was stabbed in the right rib, after which the suspect took to his heels.

The witness, Quartey, said the suspect lived with the mother in the area and was said to be a criminal, harassing residents.

“Sometimes he would come with some boys on motorbikes disturbing everybody,” he said.

Sammy, who survived the attack, is currently receiving treatment at the Police Hospital.

The police have confirmed the incident, saying that the matter is under investigation.

The Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Regional Police Command, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, confirmed the incident to Graphic Online’s Emmanuel Bonney.

“We’re in a progressive process” Didi Dramani, after defeat to Asante Kotoko

0

Accra Hearts of Oak head coach Didi Dramani has remained calm and optimistic despite his side’s defeat to arch-rivals Asante Kotoko in the 2025 President’s Cup, describing the result as part of the football journey.

Speaking after the match, Dramani reflected on the key moments that shaped the game, including the injury to a pivotal player:

“It’s part of the industry. At a time we were controlling, we lost a key player [Osei Asibey]. They took a chance, and so we have to acknowledge that.”

The new Hearts boss emphasized that the team is still in the early stages of building something solid and sustainable.

“We are in a progressive process,” he said. “I’m very impressed with the composition and execution. There is a lot we have done, but there is a lot we have to put in. I believe we will get there with some adjustments.”

Dramani also extended appreciation to the supporters, who turned out in large numbers to back the team despite the off-season scheduling.

“We love the fans so much. We want to see more of this.”

The match served as the first major test under Dramani’s leadership and, despite the result, offered promising glimpses of the club’s new direction.

Hearts of Oak who had a great outing on the night, unfortunately, lost the game 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Paul Pogba joins AS Monaco after prison return

French midfielder Partey has signed for AS Monaco French midfielder Partey has signed for AS Monaco

AS Monaco has secured the signature of French midfielder Paul Pogba on a free transfer, with the 2018 World Cup winner signing a two-year contract until June 30, 2027.

The move, announced by the Ligue 1 club on June 28, marks Pogba’s return to competitive football after an 18-month doping ban and his first professional stint in France’s top flight.

Pogba, 32, mutually terminated his contract with Juventus in November 2024 following a challenging period marred by a doping suspension.

Initially banned for four years after testing positive for DHEA in August 2023, the sanction was reduced to 18 months, allowing his competitive return in March 2025.

His last match was in September 2023 for Juventus, where injuries and limited appearances had already curtailed his impact.

The former Manchester United star, who came through Le Havre’s academy but never played in Ligue 1, turned down a lucrative offer from a Saudi Pro League club, reportedly Al-Ittihad, to join Monaco.

The principality side, who finished third in Ligue 1 last season to qualify for the Champions League, beat out interest from MLS and other European clubs.

Pogba underwent a medical on June 27, 2025 finalising the deal after advanced talks were reported earlier in the month.

“This is La renaissance,” Pogba said, signaling his ambition to revive his career and potentially earn a recall to the French national team for the 2026 World Cup.

Monaco’s squad, bolstered by players like Eric Dier and Folarin Balogun, aims to challenge Ligue 1’s elite, and Pogba’s experience, 91 caps for France and a storied career at Juventus and Manchester United, adds significant pedigree.

More woes as court summons Agradaa over alleged broadcast of pastor’s intimate video

Evangelist Mama Pat, formerly known as Nana Agradaa, has been ordered by an Accra Circuit Court to reappear on July 30, 2025, in connection with a separate case unrelated to her recent 15-year prison sentence.

The court directed her to open her defence on charges involving the alleged non-consensual sharing of intimate images.

The case was filed by preacher Prophet Appiah, popularly known as Osofo Biblical, who accused Agradaa of unlawfully broadcasting a video of him engaging in a sexual act with a married woman.

The footage was allegedly aired on her now-defunct Thunder TV station during her time as a self-styled fetish priestess.

According to the complainant, the video was shown without his consent, amounting to a violation of his privacy and dignity. He also alleged he was physically assaulted by individuals affiliated with Agradaa during that period.

The court has ordered that Agradaa be transported from the Nsawam Female Prison—where she is currently serving a 15-year jail term for fraud—to appear for a final ruling in the ongoing case.

Speaking after proceedings, her legal counsel confirmed the July 30 date and disclosed plans to appeal her recent conviction and sentence.

This latest development adds to Agradaa’s mounting legal woes, with two major cases now before the courts.

“I Was Told to Bring Him” – Kwesi Pratt Explains How Omane Boamah Ditched NPP for NDC

0

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, now a leading figure in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was once a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr has revealed as reported by Ghana Web.

According to him, Boamah’s political change occurred during the second term of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Speaking on Radio Gold’s Alhaji and Alhaji, Pratt detailed how Dr. Boamah transitioned from the NPP to the NDC after facing backlash from his then-party members.

At the time, Boamah was serving as the President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).

During the Kufuor administration, economic challenges, particularly rising fuel prices, sparked concern across the political divide.

This led to the formation of the Committee for Joint Action (CJA), a pressure group aimed at addressing the economic hardships.

Pratt noted that Boamah had come under fire from the NPP for openly criticizing the government’s performance. “At the time, Dr. Omane Boamah…was under attack by the NPP and had been drawn into a fight with the NPP,” he said.

Given Boamah’s outspoken stance, Pratt proposed his involvement in the CJA.

He recalled suggesting Boamah to join and present the group’s first statement to the public. “I was asked to bring him and to make him read the first statement of the Committee for Joint Action,” he added.

IMCC engages national-level stakeholders on National Decentralisation Policy

0

By Stanley Senya

Accra, July 7, GNA — The Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee (IMCC) on Decentralisation has concluded the National-Level Stakeholder Consultations on the formulation of the National Decentralisation Policy and Strategy (NDPS 2026-2030).

The stakeholder consultations brought together representatives from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), Regional Coordinating Councils (RCC), Development Partners, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), and the National House of Chiefs.

Since 2010, Ghana’s decentralisation reforms have been guided by successive policies, with the most recent framework expiring in December 2024.

The new NDPS aligns with Articles 35(6d) and 240 of the 1992 Constitution and supports the government’s vision under the Reset Agenda.

Dr. Gameli Kewuribe Hoedoafia, the Executive Secretary of the IMCC Secretariat, explained that a root-and-branch review of the previous decentralisation policy had revealed several gaps and weaknesses in the sector.

He said in his regard a team of experts led by Dr. Esther Ofei-Aboagye, with Prof. Kwamena Ahwoi serving as oversight Consultant, and supported by a reference group of Experts, was tasked with leading formulation of a new policy.

The NDPS 2026-2030 is anchored on the 2024 manifesto of the government and aligns with the Medium-Term National Development Policy Framework (MTNDPF) for 2026–2030, enabling both policies to be assessed holistically when they conclude simultaneously at the end of their period.

Dr. Hoedoafia said the upcoming NDPS (2026–2030) would focus on six key thematic pillars, including Political Decentralisation, Administrative Decentralisation and Decentralised Planning, Fiscal Decentralisation and local finance.

The rest are Local Economic Development, and Popular Participation and Accountability.

“For the first time, the thematic pillars will be shaped by six cross-cutting themes in response to the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the evolving priorities of Ghana’s governance landscape,’ he added.

These cross-cutting issues are Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environmental Management, Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion, Technology and Innovation, Ethics, Values, and Change Management, the 24-Hour Economy, and Safety and Security.

To facilitate meaningful and focused discussions, stakeholder institutions were grouped into clusters based on these thematic pillars.

The Executive Secretary also emphasised that decentralisation was not only about transferring power to the local Level, but also about restructuring central-level institutions.

“Decentralisation is not only about the people down there. It is also about institutional realignment and restructuring, where (MDAs) at the centre focus on policy formulation, monitoring, and evaluation, while implementation takes place at the local level to improve service delivery,” he said.

The national-level consultations follow a series of sub-national engagements held in May and June in Cape Coast, Ho, Tamale, and Kumasi.

These zonal consultations targeted Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), Civil Society Organisations, Religious Leaders, and Traditional Authorities, serving as a platform to gather the perspectives and experiences of local governance actors.

Inputs gathered from both the sub-national and national level consultations will directly inform the drafting of the national decentralisation policy that is inclusive, evidence-based, and responsive to Ghana’s evolving governance landscape and achieved on the Reset Agenda.

The IMCC Secretariat is expected to present the draft policy to the Technical Committee, then to the IMCC before it goes to Cabinet for consideration and approval.

The policy is anticipated to be finalised by August 2025.

E&P gold deal based on merit, not political favour

0

Prominent Ghanaian business leader Sir Sam Jonah has dismissed suggestions that Engineers & Planners’ (E&P) acquisition of the Black Volta Gold Project was driven by political favouritism.

According to Sir Jonah, the deal is a merit-based and commercially viable transaction, reflecting what he described as a long-overdue transformation in Ghana’s mining sector.

He emphasized that the agreement stands as a legitimate business move, rather than a politically influenced arrangement, and should be seen as part of a broader effort to empower Ghanaian-owned companies in the extractive industry.

“Let us be clear: this is not a favour. This is not political patronage. This is not crony capitalism,” Jonah declared at a ceremony to celebrate the $100 million financing agreement between Engineers & Planners (E&P) and the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID).

Describing the moment as “historic” and a “turning point” in Ghana’s decades-long relationship with the mining industry, Sam Jonah applauded the deal as the first large-scale, wholly Ghanaian-owned gold mine, calling it a symbol of what is possible when indigenous vision meets execution.

“Today, we are not merely here to witness the signing of a facility agreement. We are here to celebrate a milestone, affirm a vision, and embrace a bold new chapter in Ghana’s economic story—led not by foreign interests, but by our own.”

He noted that the deal was signed in October 2023 “with no fanfare, no interference, and no backroom dealing”, further reinforcing the argument that the project’s success is grounded in “merit, backed by a strong balance sheet, and grounded in solid business fundamentals.”

Sam Jonah, a longtime advocate for Ghanaian ownership of the mining value chain, praised Ibrahim Mahama, the founder of E&P, for his foresight and persistence.

“You are living out my dream. A dream I’ve held for decades. A dream that many believed was too ambitious.”

He recounted their first meeting in 1998 when Ibrahim Mahama sought advice on entering the mining space.

“Back then, I told him and his partner that while alluvial gold mining was unlikely to yield sustainable returns, hard rock mining was the future… That young man listened. He built a company. He earned the respect of the industry.”

Beyond celebrating the achievement, Sam Jonah used the occasion to push for policy reforms that favour local ownership and long-term national economic transformation.

“Ownership matters. Equity matters. And national pride demands that we do more to ensure that our people are at the heart of our mineral wealth.”

He drew a powerful comparison with South Africa’s Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) framework and called on Ghana to create similar conditions for local entrepreneurs to thrive.

“Our entrepreneurs are not lacking in talent. What they often lack is access: access to capital, access to opportunity, and access to policy support.”

Ending with a rallying call, Jonah urged stakeholders to view the Black Volta Gold Project not as an isolated win but as a blueprint for national resource empowerment.

“Let this be the dawn of a new era… from resource extraction for others to resource empowerment for ourselves.”

General Overseer of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro General Overseer of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro

The General Overseer of Alabaster International Ministries, Prophet Kofi Oduro, has criticised some sympathisers who were present at the burial ceremony of the late TikToker, Philipa Frimpong popularly known as “Yaa Baby.”

On July 5, 2025, videos circulated on social media, which showed an overloaded pickup truck carrying mourners en route to the cemetery.

Shortly after, more videos that made waves on social media indicated that the pickup vehicle overturned and had allegedly claimed four lives.

Reacting to the viral video, Prophet Kofi Oduro lambasted the mourners, stating that instead of reflecting on the sudden demise of Yaa Baby, they attended the burial service to exhibit their promiscuous lifestyle.

“The young lady died tragically and instead of the people to sit down and reflect on the death of the young lady, they come with their promiscuous lifestyle… Ashawo lifestyle to the young lady’s funeral and displays impunity and in the burial service of the young lady, then there is another accident that claims lives,” he said.

Prophet Kofi Oduro wondered why the youth have refused to think and learn from incidents surrounding Yaa Baby’s demise.

“The generation has refused to think. What we are focused on is pleasure than the Lord. We love happiness,” he added.

What happened to Yaa Baby:

Philippa Frimpong, known online as “Yaa Baby” (or sometimes “Shugar”), was a vibrant 21-year-old TikTok star from Tanoso, a suburb of Kumasi.

She first gained public attention through GH Kobby, a notable TikTok and Snapchat influencer. It was rumoured that the two had been dating for approximately six months.

On June 10, 2025, the couple, accompanied by two friends, Kojo Emmanuel, and Michael Kabutey, visited Seker, a village near Yeji in Ghana’s Bono East Region.

Things turned deadly when GH Kobby reportedly retrieved a loaded pump-action gun from his vehicle and discharged the weapon, fatally injuring Yaa Baby.

Despite attempts to revive her, she subsequently passed away at St. Mathias Hospital.

Her sudden death sparked widespread reactions on social media ad GH Kobby has since been arrested.

“You can do it, don’t be afraid” – Ghana’s Sports Minister Kofi Adams motivates Kotoko ahead of CAF Confederation Cup – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams has offered words of encouragement to Asante Kotoko ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

The Porcupine Warriors will participate in the Confederation Cup next season following their FA Cup success in the recently concluded season.

The 2025/26 Confederation Cup campaign will begin in September with the first round of matches scheduled for the weekend of 19th to 21st. Meanwhile, the fixtures for the round will be done in the coming weeks with clubs expected to begin preparations immediately.

Kofi Adams was in attendance when Asante Kotoko triumphed over Hearts of Oak 2-1 to annex the 2025 President Cup title.

Addressing the Kotoko team after the match, Kofi Adams urged the Porcupine Warriors to be firm as they prepare for the Confederation Cup.

“You were so solid against Hearts of Oak. When we go to Africa with this kind of spirit, we will conquer every team. I just want to encourage and motivate you that you can make it, don’t be afraid” he said.

Having triumphed over Hearts of Oak, the Porcupine Warriors are expected to travel to South Africa for the Toyota Cup game against Kaizer Chiefs as part of preparations for the African campaign.

The government and GFA must support Partey in this trial

Bullgod is an artiste manager and entertainment pundit Bullgod is an artiste manager and entertainment pundit

Entertainment pundit Lawrence Asiamah, well-known as Bullgod, has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the government to aid Thomas Partey in his rape case trial.

The player has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

The offenses are reported to have taken place between 2021 and 2022, according to the United Kingdom (UK) Metropolitan Police.

The charges involve three women, with two counts of rape relating to one woman, three counts of rape in connection to a second woman, and one count of sexual assault linked to a third woman.

In response, Bullgod asserted that the Black Stars midfielder has played an immense role in the nation’s successes, especially in qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2026 qualification.

The artiste manager also indicated that, in light of his services to the nation, the GFA and the government should do their best to help him in any way possible to get him out of the predicament.

“At the moment, we pray that God will help him to redeem himself from the charges, and public support too. I also believe that the GFA or the Ghana government should support him in the best way possible in this situation, because this is a citizen who makes the nation proud on the international stage.

“It is not easy to face charges of this sort; I have been a victim before, so I understand what it means,” he said in Twi while speaking on the United Showbiz on July 5, 2025.

Bullgod further expressed skepticism about one of the charges leveled against the former Arsenal midfielder, saying it is not plausible for one lady to be raped three times without reporting it earlier.

“One of the girls who claimed Partey raped her thrice does not make sense to me. I would dismiss it first if I were his lawyer. This is because she should have reported it when it happened for the first time, so it makes the claim doubtful,” he added.

This initiative was announced by COP Mohammed Fuseni Suraji This initiative was announced by COP Mohammed Fuseni Suraji

The Ghana Police Service has established a new unit, the 24-Hour Economy Security Secretariat, to coordinate security operations for the effective implementation of the government’s flagship 24-Hour Economy programme.

This was announced by COP Mohammed Fuseni Suraji, Director General in charge of the National Patrol Department, during the passing-out ceremony of 233 graduate and general police recruits in Koforidua on Friday, July 4, 2025.

According to COP Suraji, the formation of the new unit demonstrates the Police Administration’s commitment to aligning with government policy and ensuring a secure environment for the 24-hour economic activities envisioned under the programme.

The recruits, who underwent six months of intensive training, were equipped with skills in Police Science, Law Studies, Social Science, Public Order Management, Driving, Swimming, and Incident and Disaster Management, among others.

As the Reviewing Officer, COP Suraji urged the new officers to uphold professionalism, competence, and integrity in the line of duty.

He stressed the need for officers to enforce the law with fairness and to respect the rights and dignity of all citizens.

“Do not engage in acts that could bring the name of the Service into disrepute,” he cautioned while encouraging the recruits to rise to the increasing demands of modern policing, especially in dealing with cybercrime, violent offences, and communal conflicts.

COP Suraji further called on the public to support the Police Service by cooperating with officers, volunteering credible information, and holding the Service accountable in their shared mission to combat crime.

The event also recognized outstanding recruits for their performance.

Samuel Nii Lantey Addy was named Best in Academics, Benison Dzramedo received Best in Drill, and Ransford Boniface Adjei was awarded Best Marksman.

Other honorees included Sadiq Clottey for Best Conduct, Gilbert Boakye Danquah for Overall Best Under Cadet, and Evans Kwesi Gyarteng, who swept both the Overall National Best and Best General Recruit awards.

Oil prices to stay below $70 despite Middle East tensions

Oil prices to sell below $70 in the coming weeks Oil prices to sell below $70 in the coming weeks

Oil prices are expected to remain capped below $70 per barrel for the rest of the year, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Analysts point to ample global supply and persistent demand uncertainty as the key factors keeping a lid on prices.

Growing supply from the OPEC+ group, although not as high as the headline figure of 411,000 barrels per day (bpd) suggests, is expected to create an oversupply in the market heading into autumn, even if summer demand holds strong.

On the demand side, the peak summer travel season may support higher supply, but lingering trade and economic uncertainties are likely to limit further price increases.

Currently, oil’s “normal” price would be in the $70s range, but market oversupply is keeping prices in the $60s, Senior Portfolio Manager at Tortoise Capital, Rob Thummel, told BNN Bloomberg.

“The market is currently oversupplied, which is keeping oil in the $60s. To get back to what we view as a normal price in the $70s, we’d need to see a more balanced market,” he added.

Most analysts forecast that oil will hover in the mid-$60s and average below $70 per barrel through 2025.

Breaking: MP for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi, confirmed dead

His victory, however, was mired in controversy and subsequently became the subject of a prolonged legal dispute.

On 18 February, the Koforidua High Court issued a warrant for Mr Kumi’s arrest for contempt of court. This followed his decision to defy an interim injunction that barred him from being sworn in as MP for the Akwatia Constituency. The injunction had been filed by his opponent, challenging the credibility of the election results.

However, the Supreme Court later overturned the High Court’s decision in a 4–1 majority ruling, citing judicial bias in the original judgement and clearing the path for Mr Kumi to officially take his seat in Parliament.

Beyond politics, Ernest Kumi had a commendable academic and professional background. He held an MSc in Defence and International Politics from the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (2022), an MBA in Corporate Governance from the University of Professional Studies (2014), an LLB from Mountcrest University College (2019), and a BSc in Ports and Shipping Administration from the Regional Maritime University (2009).

One of Cameroon’s brightest young talents is back on the pitch and ready to silence the doubters.

Nathan Doualla, the highly rated 19-year-old midfielder, has signed with Canon Sportif de Yaoundé after months in limbo since leaving Victoria United.

The deal is seen as a major coup for the Kpa-Kum, who has secured the services of a player many still believe could become a mainstay of Cameroon’s midfield for years to come.

Doualla’s arrival is expected to inject fresh creativity and vision into Canon Sportif’s engine room this season.

The comeback comes just weeks after Doualla was named Cameroon’s Best Young Player of the Season, an award that capped off a turbulent but impressive year.

While at Victoria United, Doualla caught the eye with his composure, passing range and technical flair, helping his side sit fifth in the top-flight table with 35 points from 24 matches before his exit.

But his rapid rise has not been without controversy. In 2023, the teenager was a surprise inclusion in Cameroon’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Although he didn’t play a single minute as the Indomitable Lions exited in the Round of 16 to eventual runners-up Nigeria, his call-up sparked heated debate online, with questions raised about his age after photos of him went viral.

Those questions escalated into a scandal when Doualla was named among 62 players suspended by the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) for alleged double identification and age discrepancies.

Victoria United fiercely defended their star, dismissing the accusations as baseless and standing by his credentials.

U.S. sends eight men to South Sudan after court clash over deportations

0

Men deported by U.S. to South Sudan Men deported by U.S. to South Sudan

Eight men, most of them not South Sudanese nationals, were deported by the United States to South Sudan last week after a protracted legal tug-of-war that briefly rerouted their journey to Djibouti. Despite only one of the individuals being from South Sudan, the country became the final destination after several other nations reportedly declined to accept them.

The group, which included citizens of Myanmar, Cuba, Vietnam, Laos, and Mexico, had all served time in the U.S. for serious offenses such as murder, sexual assault, and robbery. Some had completed their prison terms, while others were nearing the end of their sentences.

U.S. immigration authorities defended the move, noting the increasing difficulty of repatriating individuals when their countries of origin refuse to take them back. “Most of their home countries had refused to accept them,” officials said.

The Trump administration has been pushing for broader use of “third-country deportations,” sending individuals to nations other than their country of origin. El Salvador and Costa Rica have previously accepted such deportees, while other potential destinations reportedly under discussion include Rwanda, Benin, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini, and Moldova.

A photo shared with CBS News by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security showed the deportees shackled at both the hands and feet aboard the aircraft.

It remains unclear how the South Sudanese authorities will handle the group. “Officials did not say whether the South Sudanese government had detained them or what their fate would be.”

Edmund Yakani, head of a South Sudanese civil society group, briefly saw the eight men after their arrival in Juba. “The eight were in a civilian facility in the capital Juba under the watch of police and the national security service,” he told the BBC World Service. “They were not in handcuffs and appeared to be in good condition.”

Yakani noted that their legal status remained uncertain and expressed hope that the government would clarify their position soon. “The status of the group was still unclear and he hopes the government provides clarity on Monday,” the BBC reported.

The deportation comes amid heightened instability in South Sudan, a country the U.S. State Department has warned citizens to avoid due to ongoing armed conflict, rampant crime, and kidnapping risks.

The eight men were first flown out of the U.S. in May, but their journey was temporarily halted after a Massachusetts district judge intervened. Judge Brian Murphy had ruled that deportees bound for third countries were entitled to receive formal notice and consult with an asylum officer.

However, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned his decision last week, clearing the way for the removals to proceed. On Thursday, the high court stated that Judge Murphy could no longer mandate due process hearings in such deportations. Efforts by attorneys to get another judge involved failed when it was determined that only Judge Murphy had jurisdiction. In turn, Murphy acknowledged he lacked authority to block the removals, citing the Supreme Court’s “binding” ruling.

The Department of Homeland Security celebrated the final outcome. “Tricia McLaughlin from the US Department of Homeland Security called the South Sudan deportation a victory over ‘activist judges’.”

Tensions between the U.S. and South Sudan had already escalated earlier this year when Secretary of State Marco Rubio revoked visas for all South Sudanese passport holders, citing the country’s previous refusal to accept its deported citizens.

Court orders Nana Agradaa to open defence in nude image case

0

The High Court in Accra has ordered prison authorities to produce the founder of Heaven Way Champion International Ministry, Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, in court as she and three others are set to open their defence in a separate criminal case.

The directive came after the court heard arguments on a submission of no case filed by Agradaa’s legal team. The court ruled that the accused persons have a case to answer and must proceed to open their defence.

Nana Agradaa, who is currently serving a 15-year jail term following her conviction on charges of charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretence, was absent from the courtroom on Monday, July 7, 2025. The prosecution told the court she is in lawful custody at Nsawam Prison.

“We requested a warrant for her to be brought to court any time the case is called,” a prosecutor explained, after the judge inquired about her whereabouts.

Counsel for Agradaa, Richard Adade Baffour, pleaded with the court to adjourn the ruling until she could be present. However, the court proceeded and ordered that the prison authorities ensure her presence in court for the next sitting.

The judge also instructed that any witness statements be filed within two weeks, setting July 30 at 1:00 p.m. for the Case Management Conference (CMC).

Background

Nana Agradaa and three others — Enock Owusu Kissi, 33; Charles Omane, alias One Gig, 39; and Emmanuel Kofi Gyasi, 47 — are facing charges for allegedly sharing nude images of a prophet, Emmanuel Appiah Fomum.

Agradaa faces four charges, including possession of obscene material and non-consensual sharing of intimate images, contrary to the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038). Her co-accused are charged with abetment of crime and conspiracy to commit a crime related to the unlawful sharing of intimate images.

According to the brief facts filed by state prosecutors on July 11, 2024, the incident occurred during a live broadcast of Agradaa’s programme Yi Wasum on her former TV station, Thunder TV — now rebranded as Today’s TV. The programme was simultaneously streamed on YouTube and Facebook.

Prosecutors say Nana Agradaa displayed nude photos of Prophet Fomum on-air, later sending them via WhatsApp to another individual. Her co-accused, who appeared as panellists on the programme, allegedly made disparaging comments about the prophet’s nudity during the broadcast.

The case had previously been dismissed by the Circuit Court, but state prosecutors refiled the charges at the High Court.

Nana Agradaa and her co-accused are expected to appear before the court again on July 30, 2025, for the Case Management Conference, where they will open their defence.

Get ready to gather around the firepit — another recoupling, dumping and the fourth vote of Love Island USA Season 7 are going down tonight. With the finale fast approaching and $100,000 on the line, every vote counts more than ever.

The first recoupling vote led to the dramatic breakup of Huda and Jeremiah. The second left six Islanders vulnerable, ultimately resulting in the dumping of Hannah and Jeremiah. Last week, a public vote sent five of America’s least favorite Islanders packing: Andreina, Austin, Gracyn, Jaden, Taylor and TJ. Now, it’s time for viewers to have their say once again.

Ahead of Episode 30, there are five couples remaining: Ace and Chelley, Amaya and Zak, Chris and Huda, Cierra and Nic and Clarke and Taylor. Meanwhile, Bryan, Iris, Elan, Olandria and Pepe are single. Amaya is a hot commodity in the villa, based on tonight’s first-look teaser, with both Bryan and Elan eager to explore a connection with America’s sweetheart. Something could also be brewing between Iris and Pepe, and Zak and Olandria, too.

So, who could be getting axed tonight before the public vote? Unfortinately, multiple Islanders could be saying goodbye. “Any boy that’s not in a couple will be leaving the Island tonight,” host Ariana Madix said in Sunday’s teaser, likely leaving Amaya to decide the fate of Bryan, Elan and Zak.

One Islander who isn’t safe from the vote is Cierra, who has come under fire from fans after an old social media post allegedly containing a derogatory slur resurfaced. The controversy follows the removal of another original Season 7 contestant, Yulissa, who was quickly axed from the show after it was revealed she had used a racial slur on podcasts (she later posted an apology). Cierra was also noticeably absent from the first-look teaser for tonight’s episode, suggesting that producers may be working behind the scenes to navigate the situation.

Here’s everything to know about voting on Love Island USA, including what time it starts, how long voting is open and more frequently asked questions.

KATH doctor dies over lack of laboratory for treating ‘heart attack’

0

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital is seeking the urgent prioritization and construction of a catheterization laboratory after losing one of its critical medical staff who suffered a heart attack.

Dr. Kwame Adu Ofori, an Emergency Physician at the Hospital, is reported to have died over the weekend when his colleague doctors attempted saving him but lacked the crucial laboratory to treat an obstruction in one of the blood vessels pumping blood to his heart.

The absence of the laboratory at Ghana’s second largest teaching hospital has sparked grave concerns over the poor medical infrastructure in public health facilities in the country as Ghana boasts of only one of such facilities located in Accra.

It was a gloomy weekend at Ghana’s second largest teaching hospital, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, after health professionals watched helplessly to seek urgent medical attention for a colleague who suffered a myocardial infarction, otherwise known as a heart attack.

A specialized area to perform a minimally invasive procedure to diagnose and treat an obstructed blood vessel to his heart was missing at the Ashanti region’s foremost hospital.

Despite immediate response to stabilize him before being transported to the national capital for proper care, he died on the way.

CEO of KATH, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo recounts moments of the unfortunate demise.

“After the doctors stabilized him, we arranged for a military airlift to transport him immediately to Accra for him to be properly attended to. We arranged a team of doctors and special care nurses for him. They were in touch when they got to Accra but he unfortunately died on their way to the hospital,” he recounted.

Dr. Kwame Adu Ofori before his passing was an Emergency Physician at the hospital, who contributed actively to providing emergency medical care to critically ill patients, but sadly couldn’t save himself.

Despite calls for successive governments to construct a Cath Lab for the facility, it has fallen on deaf ears.

“When a delegation from Bank of Ghana visited us, I made a plea to them to help us construct a CATH lab. They’ve asked that we submit a proposal to be sent to the Governor,” he said.

The similar situation is mirrored in public health facilities across other regions in the country.

A construction of the facility will be the first and foremost in the 67 years of existence of the hospital, serving the Ashanti region and the Northern part of Ghana.

Technically, doctors perform a cardiac catheterization on patients by inserting a thin, flexible tube called a catheter into a blood vessel, and this is carefully guided to the heart.

It is usually passed through the hand or leg to reach the heart without an open-heart surgery.

The unfortunate incident has since ignited concerns amongst workers at the hospital on the inadequate medical infrastructure.

Dr. Baidoo says the hospital needs urgent retooling to improve quality healthcare delivery.

“The sterilization facility at the hospital is also defunct. We need a comprehensive retooling of the hospital,” he noted.

Health professionals at the hospital anticipate an immediate construction and completion of the specialized laboratory to end the numerous avoidable cardiac deaths.

Meanwhile, the management of the hospital says the Minister of Health has been informed of the incident who has assured of the construction of the facility in not only Kumasi but also in Tamale and another in Accra.

Ghana’s Forex Reserves Strong Enough to Pay Maturing Debt Without Stressing the Cedi – Economist Allays Fears

0

As fears mounted that the payment of Ghana’s maturing Eurobond debt this July could weaken the cedi due to heavy foreign exchange outflows, a Ghanaian economist is offering a calm, confident perspective that Ghana has more than enough forex reserves to weather the storm.

Dr. Paul Appiah Konadu finds the successful servicing of the country’s external debt obligations as a strong signal that Ghana’s foreign reserves are in good health. He says it is estimated that the country’s forex reserves are around $10 billion.

He explains that this implies that the country can meet its periodic external debt payments without triggering undue pressure on the cedi.

Ghana's Forex Reserves Strong Enough to Pay Maturing Debt Without Stressing the Cedi – Economist Allays Fears

The clarification from the economist comes after many analysts feared that the stability of the cedi might be a hoax since the country is no longer honouring its debt obligations. It was anticipated that when the country pays its maturing debt, it will put undue pressure on the cedi, causing it to tumble.

The government last week paid the next tranche of the country’s maturing Eurobond, amounting to about $350 million.

With the swift payment by the government without any challenges, the economist is calming nerves that the local currency is still in a good place.

“Now that we are able to service our debts, it presupposes that we probably have adequate forex or foreign exchange reserves, more or less of about 10 billion dollars, which means that we will be able to meet the periodic payments for our external debt commitments without any significant stress on the cedi,” Dr. Paul Appiah Konadu told The High Street Journal.

Ghana's Forex Reserves Strong Enough to Pay Maturing Debt Without Stressing the Cedi – Economist Allays Fears

Dr. Konadu further argued that the latest development rather strengthens investor confidence, especially as the currency has shown relative stability in recent weeks. He believes that with Ghana demonstrating the capacity to honour its external debt, investor sentiment may shift positively, potentially attracting fresh foreign capital into the economy.

“Investors are beginning to have some confidence in the Ghanaian economy, which may lead to the attraction of some foreign investments owing to the expected stability of the cedi going forward,” he added.

But it doesn’t end there. Ghana’s forex position could soon receive another significant boost. The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is expected to approve the fourth review of Ghana’s $3 billion bailout programme later today.

If approved, the country will unlock another tranche of financial support, an inflow that could replenish or even outweigh the forex outflows used to honour the Eurobond payment.

This expected disbursement will add more firepower to Ghana’s reserves, strengthening the country’s ability to finance its import needs, support the local currency, and meet future external debt obligations with greater confidence.

Dr Bryan Acheampong seeks Kufuor’s blessing for NPP flagbearer bid

Dr Bryan Acheampong is an NPP flagbearer aspirant Dr Bryan Acheampong is an NPP flagbearer aspirant

Flagbearer aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Bryan Acheampong, has paid a courtesy call on former President John Agyekum Kufuor to formally inform him of his presidential ambitions.

Dr Acheampong, explaining the reason behind his visit said it was part of his broader consultations with key personalities and leaders of the party.

He expressed his reverence and appreciation for former President Kufuor, reflecting on their relationship and the pivotal role Kufuor has played in his political journey.

According to him, it would be a disgrace not to formally inform Kufuor of his presidential ambitions in person, and for him to instead hear about it through the media.

“Your Excellency, it will be very difficult and a big disgrace that one of the children you groomed has aspirations to do something and the first time you will hear it is on Peace FM. That will prove that something is wrong somewhere so my team and I decided that no matter what, I have to inform you of my plans.

“Whatever you say is what I will accept because I am still learning from my elders. With your blessings, as a young vibrant man I will like to submit my name to run for the flagbearership position of the party for the 2028 election so that’s why we are here,” he said in a video shared online and sighted by GhanaWeb.

He added, “I have always been trying to find time to visit. A lot of people don’t know that some time back when Suhum elections got very tough, you were then the President and you summoned me to your house and told me to step down due to how chaotic the election was just for peace to reign. I listened to you and stepped down. You also said we should go on and serve the party and that it will get to a point where the party will be greater and will gain power. We have followed and served till now and still going.”

The NPP is scheduled to conduct its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026.

Watch the emotional scenes at Agradaa’s church as members hold first service after sentencing

The congregation was led by Nana Agradaa’s husband, Pastor Angel Asiamah play videoThe congregation was led by Nana Agradaa’s husband, Pastor Angel Asiamah

It was a deeply emotional atmosphere at the Heaven Way Church on Sunday, July 6, 2025, as members gathered for their first service without their founder and leader, repented priestess Evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, following her recent 15-year jail sentence.

With their spiritual head absent, the congregation was led by Nana Agradaa’s husband, Pastor Angel Asiamah, who stepped in to deliver the sermon.

Pastor Asiamah was seen wiping tears from his face multiple times as he led the service.

As he encouraged the congregation to remain steadfast and hopeful, many members could not hold back their emotions. Some were seen wiping their faces, while others lay prostrate on the floor in fervent prayer, visibly shaken by the situation.

“Let us continue to pray without ceasing,” Pastor Asiamah urged.

Nana Agradaa has been convicted for 15 years at an Accra Circuit Court presided by Justice Evelyn Amoah, on charges of charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretences.

Agradaa’s conviction stems from a viral video from 2022, in which she promised to double money for individuals who attended an all-night service at her church in Weija.

Background

Agradaa was arrested on Sunday, October 9, 2022, following a series of public complaints.

“The police have arrested Patricia Asiedua, alias Nana Agradaa, following allegations of a money-doubling scam levelled against her by some members of the public. The suspect is currently assisting with police investigations,” a statement from the Ghana Police Service read at the time.

The arrest followed an all-night church service held on October 7, 2022, during which Agradaa allegedly promised financial returns to attendees.

Several congregants later accused her of fraud, claiming they were asked to give her money with the assurance it would be doubled, but received nothing in return.

Many of the victims shared their experiences online, alleging that after collecting their money, Agradaa simply dismissed them from the premises without fulfilling her promise.

These reports led to public outcry and prompted police action.

Following her arrest, the police urged anyone who had been affected by the alleged scheme to report to the Accra Regional Police Command to assist with ongoing investigations.

On Friday, July 4, 2025, the tranquil forecourt of North Hills International School in North Legon, Accra, came alive with celebration as the institution hosted its annual Speech and Prize-Giving Day.

Under the theme “Discipline: The Bridge Between Dreams and Reality,” the event brought together proud parents, accomplished students, dedicated staff, and distinguished guests to honour academic achievement and the values that mould future leaders.

The ceremony commenced with prayers led by students Sadiq Ibrahim Kambala and Nicole Yirenkyiwa Kwapong Owusu, followed by a stirring rendition of the school anthem.

A vibrant opening performance by Freddy Dadzie and Elyown Commey, coupled with Maya Apkalu’s formal introduction of the Chairman, set the tone for a day of inspiration. Throughout the event, the school choir, ballet dancers, and band showcased the institution’s commitment to nurturing creativity, while cultural dances and poetry recitals added depth to the proceedings.

In her welcome address, Headmistress Mrs Emma Coleman Opoku reaffirmed the school’s dedication to academic excellence, citing remarkable achievements in the previous year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Notably, one student earned ten ones, securing admission to Wesley Girls’ High School, while others with eight and six ones gained entry to Achimota International School and St Roses Senior High School, respectively.

Guest speaker Rosemond Obeng delivered a powerful keynote address, likening discipline to salt in soup — an essential ingredient for success. Drawing parallels to the life of Dr Ben Carson, she emphasised the collective responsibility of parents, educators, and society in instilling discipline and purpose in young minds.

The ceremony’s highlight came with the recognition of exceptional students, including Vielung Kwadwo Bagbin, son of Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin. The young scholar claimed seven prestigious awards, including Overall Outstanding Student and top honours in English, Science, Mathematics, French, and Geography.

Equally noteworthy was Mr Wazi Amoah’s recognition as Best Teacher of the Year, for which he received a generous gift from Dr Adu Boateng of End Point Homeopathic Clinic.

Staff members, both teaching and non-teaching, were also honoured with awards for their tireless efforts and contributions to the school’s growth.

As the event drew to a close with a musical interlude and closing prayer by Adwoa Hemaa Adu Poku, North Hills International School reaffirmed its commitment to developing globally minded individuals.

The occasion served not merely as a celebration of past achievements but as a testament to the institution’s unwavering belief in its students’ limitless potential—a belief grounded in discipline, excellence, and holistic education.

GPHA Director-General inspects key road rehabilitation projects within Port of Tema enclave

Brigadier General Tanye-Kulono also inspected the breakwater being constructed at Terminal 2 Brigadier General Tanye-Kulono also inspected the breakwater being constructed at Terminal 2

The Director-General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Brigadier General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, on Monday, July 7, 2025, led a team to inspect the ongoing rehabilitation works on three critical road corridors within the Port of Tema enclave.

The inspection covered the Mankoadze roundabout to Harbour roundabout road, the Harbour Roundabout to GHACEM road, and the Terminal 3 to Terminal 2 access road.

The Harbour roundabout to GHACEM road, which serves as a vital artery for heavy-duty vehicles, is being rehabilitated to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and support the smooth movement of goods.

A highlight of the inspection was the Terminal 3 to Terminal 2 access road, a strategic link road designed to directly connect the two major terminals. Once completed, the new road is expected to significantly cut down transit times between the terminals and facilitate smoother container transfers.

Brigadier General Tanye-Kulono also inspected the breakwater being constructed at Terminal 2 and indicated that he was impressed with the rate of work at the various construction sites. He urged contractors to expedite the work to ensure they complete them on time.

He also reaffirmed GPHA’s commitment to maintaining and upgrading critical infrastructure within the port environment to support Ghana’s growing maritime trade.

The ongoing projects form part of a broader infrastructure improvement plan aimed at boosting accessibility to the Port of Tema, reducing container congestion, and enhancing the overall experience for port users.

New oil discoveries were made under Akufo-Addo – Minority to gov’t

0

The Minority in Parliament are defending the record of the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government in the upstream Petroleum sector.

Following the announcement of the new Eban/Akoma oil and gas discovery, some persons in government have claimed the previous government collapsed the upstream Petroleum sector.

But addressing a news conference in Parliament, Deputy Ranking Member on the Energy Committee Collins Adomako Mensah highlighted a number of developments in the sector which he attributes to the previous Akufo-Addo government’s foresight.

“ENI, as required by the CTP Block 4 Petroleum Agreement, formerly issued two separate notices of discovery to the then Ministry of Energy, the Petroleum Commission and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation. These discoveries were also announced or published by sections of the Ghanaian media,” he said.

The Minority also described as disingenuous any claim that the latest Eban/Akoma oil and gas discovery is attributable to the Mahama administration.

According to him, the government is on an intentional agenda to unjustifiably claim credit for the discoveries.

“The Minority wonders how the Mahama administration, which had nothing to do with the drilling of the Akoma and Eban exploration wells as well as approval of the appraisal programme of the two discoveries, will all of a sudden claim that the results of an Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration-approved appraisal programme that are a result of commerciality are a credit to it.”

New Oil discoveries happened under Akufo-Addo, not Mahama – Minority

0

The Minority in Parliament has criticised the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) for allegedly claiming credit for recent oil discoveries that, according to them, were made under the previous Akufo-Addo administration.

Addressing a press conference on behalf of the Minority caucus, Collins Adomako-Mensah, Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North and Ranking Member on Parliament’s Energy Committee, asserted that the Akoma and Eban-1X oil discoveries were made in 2019 and 2021, respectively—both during former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s tenure.

He explained that ENI Ghana, operator of the Cape Three Points (CTP) Block 4, issued formal notices of discovery to the then Ministry of Energy, the Petroleum Commission, and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) in accordance with the petroleum agreement.

Mr. Adomako-Mensah expressed concern over what he described as a deliberate effort by the current government to claim credit for discoveries it had no role in.

He emphasized that under Ghana’s petroleum regime, the responsibility of reporting the outcomes of approved appraisal programmes lies with the contractor or operator—not the government.

“In Ghana’s upstream petroleum industry, it is a contract or operator that has a duty of informing the state of the outcome of any approved appraisal programme. That is what ENI did recently.”

He further accused the Mahama-led administration of using the announcement for political gain.

“The Mahama administration, for self-serving purposes, has sought to covet this normal reporting to a funfair whose cause is attributable to it, even though it is barely seven months in office,” he added.

Ghana to Digitise 16,000 Government Services on Ghana.gov Platform

0

The Ministry, in collaboration with the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), is currently re-engineering the platform to make government services more accessible and convenient for citizens and businesses alike.

In a significant push to modernize public service delivery, Ghana is set to expand its Ghana.gov platform dramatically, with 16,000 government services slated for digital integration. This ambitious undertaking was announced by Samuel Nartey George, the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, during a recent press briefing.

The Ministry, in collaboration with the National Information Technology Agency (NITA) , is currently re-engineering the platform to make government services more accessible and convenient for citizens and businesses alike. The goal is to enhance transparency and reliability in accessing public services.

Currently, the Ghana.gov portal facilitates around 1,500 to 2,000 services, including payments, permits, registrations, and licenses, serving as a central digital hub. The redesigned version, expected to launch in the fourth quarter after a public tender, promises significantly faster access, full Ghana Card integration, and an intuitive, streamlined interface. This redesign aligns with the government’s broader digital transformation agenda, aiming to reduce bureaucracy and improve service delivery turnaround times.

Beyond digital services, Minister George also addressed critical issues concerning digital content and consumer rights. He condemned the proliferation of sexually explicit material on platforms like TikTok, emphasizing its unacceptability and contravention of Ghanaian cultural values. He disclosed that the government had engaged TikTok’s West Africa team to advocate for in-country content moderation by locally trained teams. Furthermore, a local content governance framework was proposed, with the Cybersecurity Authority (CSA) tasked to monitor and remove offensive content, particularly to safeguard minors.

In a related development, assurance was given to the public regarding DStv subscription prices, with a commitment to securing a reduction. A crucial meeting was scheduled with MultiChoice Ghana and their South African leadership to discuss pricing structures that are more responsive to Ghana’s economic conditions and its citizens’ financial realities.

Regarding radio stations, the Minister provided an update on ongoing enforcement actions against non-compliant broadcasters. Out of 62 stations previously shut down by the National Communications Authority (NCA), only 18 have so far initiated steps to rectify their violations. These stations have less than ten days remaining in a 30-day moratorium granted by the President as a gesture of leniency for infractions such as license non-renewal, lack of tax clearance, and non-compliance with standards. The Minister affirmed that the enforcement is not politically motivated but essential for sanitizing the broadcasting sector. The 18 stations demonstrating good faith will receive an additional 30-day extension to achieve full compliance, though a strict warning was issued against those who fail to act. The media was urged to adhere to legal obligations, with a reminder of the responsibilities that accompany their influence.

Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum

Background and Data Collection

The GTA has since 2019, consistently published the Annual Tourism Report.

Using 2019 as the baseline year, the 2024 report documents the sector’s progress in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Primary data were collected through interviews with inbound tourists at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), and surveys conducted at selected tourism enterprises in Accra and Takoradi during the “December in Gh” (DiGH) festivities.

The GTA disclosed that secondary data were generously provided by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), whose ongoing cooperation is gratefully acknowledged.

Furthermore, data on domestic tourism were gathered in collaboration with regional directors and site managers across the country’s tourist attractions, as well as occupancy data from selected hospitality establishments.

According to the 2024, report, the outlook for the coming years is marked by cautious optimism, grounded in indicators of sector-wide stability. The report is informed by both primary and secondary data sources.

Destination of International Travelers

The 2024 Tourism Report showed that American Nationals topped the list of visitors.

Out of the 1.2 million international visitors, 137,000 came from America. 111,000 were from Nigeria. The United Kingdom came in third with 52,000.

The report showed that it has been the trend in the top three.

The report established that, 22.4 percent of the visitors were in Ghana last year for business purposes.

Visiting family and friends accounted for about 22.2 percent of the total visit for vacation purposes. Conference came up as the 4th reason offered by visitors.

Again 1.1 million of the visitors used the Kotoka International Airport for their visits.

77,000 used the Aflao boarder and the remaining, came through Elubu which is in the third place with 53,000 visitors.

Two reported dead in Kenya protests as central Nairobi sealed off

0

Police fired tear gas to disperse protesters in Nairobi Police fired tear gas to disperse protesters in Nairobi

Two people have reportedly died of gunshot wounds after police opened fire during protests in Kenya, the latest in a wave of anti-government rallies that began last year.

Dr Aron Sikuku, a medic at Eagle Nursing Home in Kangemi on the outskirts of Nairobi, told the BBC that two bodies had been taken to the facility and had died from gunshot wounds. He said hundreds of protesters had gathered outside his hospital demanding to take away the bodies.

As of now, there has been no official confirmation of the deaths.

The demonstrations mark the 35th anniversary of the historic Saba Saba (7 July 1990) protests that launched Kenya’s push for multiparty democracy.

From early morning, security forces blocked all major roads into central Nairobi ahead of the protests. The city centre appeared deserted, with businesses shut and a heavy police presence on the streets.

Elsewhere in Nairobi, clashes broke out as demonstrators lit fires and attempted to breach police cordons. Officers responded with tear gas and water cannon.

The police fired tear gas to disperse people on Thika Road, as well as in Kitengela, a town on the outskirts of the capital. In Kamukunji, near the venue where the original Saba Saba protests were held, police battled groups of protesters who lit fires on the streets.

The rest of the country was largely quiet, although some clashes were reported.

Earlier, hundreds of early-morning commuters and overnight travellers were stranded at checkpoints, some more than 10km (six miles) from the city centre, with only a few vehicles allowed through.

Within the city, roads leading to key government sites – including the president’s official residence, State House, and the Kenyan parliament – were barricaded with razor wire.

Some schools advised students to stay at home.

By mid-morning on Monday, hundreds of overnight passengers remained stranded outside the city centre, with major roads still closed.

Some long-distance buses were parked in Kabete, about 13km from the city centre, with many passengers who could not afford to pay extra money for motorcycle rides to their destinations remaining there.

Humphrey Gumbishi, a bus driver, said they had started their journey on Sunday evening only to find the police roadblock in the morning.

“We started travelling at 8:30 pm last night… We want the government to engage in a dialogue with Gen Zs so all this can come to an end,” he told the BBC

In a statement issued on Sunday evening, the police said it was their constitutional duty to protect lives and property while maintaining public order.

Monday’s demonstrations were organised primarily by the so-called Gen-Z young people, demanding good governance, greater accountability, and justice for victims of police brutality, continuing the wave of anti-government protests since last year.

On 25 June, at least 19 people were killed and thousands of businesses looted and destroyed in a day of nationwide protests that were being held in honour of those killed in last year’s anti-tax protests.

Recent demonstrations have turned violent, with reports of infiltration by “goons”, who are accused of looting and attacking protesters. Civil society groups allege collusion between these groups and the police – accusations the police have strongly denied.

On Sunday, an armed gang attacked the headquarters of a human rights NGO in Nairobi. The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) had been hosting a press conference organised by women calling for an end to state violence ahead of Monday’s protests.

The KHRC spokesman, Ernest Cornel, said that the gang was made up of at least 25 people on motorbikes chanting: “There will be no protest today”.

“They were carrying stones, they were carrying clubs… they stole laptops, they stole a phone and they also took some valuables from journalists who were there,” he told the BBC Newsday programme.

The original Saba Saba protests were a key moment that helped usher in multiparty democracy in Kenya after years of one-party rule.

The response by the then government under President Daniel arap Moi was brutal. Many protesters were arrested, while at least 20 people were reportedly killed.

Since then, Saba Saba has come to symbolise civic resistance and the fight for democratic freedom in Kenya.

Shatta Wale provided the performance “pro bono in honour of the President and the Ghanaian people,” according to a Ministry statement, and accepted full responsibility for expenses linked to dancers, costumes, rehearsals, and stage production.

SOS Ghana mentors JHS graduates on career and life skills

0

SOS Children’s Villages in Ghana has ended a five-day Life Skills and Career Orientation Boot Camp designed to help Junior High School (JHS) graduates prepare for life after school with practical knowledge and guidance for their future paths.

The camp took place from June 30 to July 4, 2025, at the organisation’s programme site in Tema. It brought together 84 participants from SOS locations in Tema, Asiakwa, Kumasi, and Tamale, as well as young people from surrounding communities.

Held under the theme *“Helping young people develop the relevant skills for their career path,”* the camp introduced participants to a wide range of topics intended to help them build confidence and prepare for both academic and vocational options.

Participants engaged in sessions on self-awareness, decision-making, time management, financial planning, leadership, entrepreneurship, and environmental responsibility. Other sessions included discussions on sexual and reproductive health, drug abuse, gender stereotypes, and how to identify and report abuse.

sos2

Speaking during the opening session, Mr Godknows Kporha, Youth Development Advisor at SOS Children’s Villages Ghana, said the programme was intended to support young people in making informed decisions about their lives.

“This boot camp is not just about career orientation,” Mr Kporha said. “It’s about helping young people see themselves as agents of change in their communities through personal growth, resilience, and purposeful choices.”

The National Director of SOS Children’s Villages Ghana, Mr Alexander Mar Kekula, advised the participants to be purposeful in their actions and remain focused on their goals.

“Be intentional about your choices. Seek guidance, ask questions, and remain focused,” Mr Kekula told the group. He urged them to take charge of their future by making deliberate and thoughtful decisions.

sos3

During the entrepreneurship session, participants worked in teams to develop business ideas, which they presented to their peers and facilitators.

The activity was meant to encourage practical thinking and peer learning. In another group session on gender equality, the young people were encouraged to question traditional roles and discuss ways to promote fairness within their communities.

One of the sessions on child safeguarding provided practical information on how to protect oneself and others from abuse. Participants were taken through how to recognise harmful behaviour, seek help, and understand personal boundaries and consent.

sos4

The boot camp ended with an educational tour of the Tema Harbour. Many of the participants were visiting the port for the first time and had the opportunity to observe port operations and learn about career prospects in logistics, shipping, and international trade.

SOS Children’s Villages Ghana said the programme is part of its broader effort to support young people with guidance and tools that can help them make sound choices for their lives and their communities.

The organisation added that it will continue to roll out similar initiatives across its locations to promote the growth and development of Ghanaian youth.

‘Smiling mafia’ – Shatta Wale declares as he extols President Mahama on stage

Ghanaian dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale, is once again making headlines, this time for his electrifying performance at the just-ended 2025 President’s Cup held on Sunday, July 6, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

During his time on stage, Shatta paused mid-performance to acknowledge President Mahama and heap praises on him.

Midway through his submission he referred to the President as what he termed as a “smiling mafia.”

Unclear what exactly that meant, Shatta stated, “I just want to say a big shout out to the President of Ghana, His Excellency John Mahama, everybody say the smiling mafia. Say Mahama you be smiling mafia.”

Meanwhile, Shatta’s performance has since earned applause from scores of netizens.

While some praised him for his energetic delivery and bold shoutout, others debated the implications of the “smiling mafia” tag.

One X user wrote, “This statement be mad oooo. The interpretation be plenty.”

Another, commented, “How can you hate Shatta Wale and Mahama? Too much vibe!”
