Social media giant Meta has offered to pay up to $5,000 (£4,040) to popular creators in the USA
Social media giant Meta has offered to pay up to $5,000 (£4,040) to popular creators in the United States who join Facebook and Instagram.
It says those joining from “third-party social apps” will get cash based on “an evaluation of your social presence”.
Though it does not mention TikTok by name, the timing would suggest Meta is attempting to capitalise on the uncertainty surrounding its rival, as questions swirl about whether President Trump can find a way of preserving it for US users.
TikTok says it has 170 million users in the US – with many of them relying on it for their livelihoods – meaning lots of people would be seeking an alternative place to post if the platform disappeared.
Meta says on its website that those accepted into the so-called “Breakthrough bonus programme” will be paid the money during their first 90 days on the app, so long as they post regularly.
Users must post at least 20 reels on Facebook and 10 reels on Instagram – Meta’s version of vertical TikTok videos – during each 30-day period.
It also dictates that these must be original videos, rather than those previously shared on other platforms.
But not everyone can join – the cash will only be available to those people who are completely new to either Facebook or Instagram.
And the firm will seemingly decide who to accept on a case-by-case basis, as people must apply to be accepted onto the programme.
It is also offering other perks, such as a free subscription to its blue check verification system.
Meta courts TikTokers
This is not the first move by Meta to go after ByteDance’s users.
On Sunday, the firm announced Edits, an app strikingly similar to ByteDance’s CapCut – a video editing app which went offline when the ByteDance ban took effect that same day.
And two days earlier, Meta posted a video in which two creators discussed Facebook’s “new affiliate link experience for your shoppable content” – in other words Meta’s attempt to build its own version of the highly successful TikTok Shop.
In the new system, Meta users will be able to add prominent affiliate links directly on their videos – rather than in the comments – exactly how it works on TikTok.
But that’s not all the changes Meta has made – and perhaps the most visually significant is a direct change to how Instagram looks.
Rather than posts and videos being square on user profiles, they are now rectangular – again, clearly taking inspiration from TikTok.
This has led to some backlash from creators frustrated that their profiles now look different, and Instagram boss Adam Mosseri said he was aware of the criticisms.
“One of the mistakes I made was not giving people enough of a heads up,” he said in a post on Threads – a platform which was itself launched by Meta in attempt to capitalise on the turbulence at Twitter, now X.

Ransford, a 16-year-old footballer is currently battling for his life at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi after allegedly being sodomized by a coach of his club, Siano Soccer Academy.
A narration of events by the 16-year-old footballer from Asamanye in the Ashanti Region paints the disturbing and horrific situation of a young boy who has been abused sexually for the past three years.
Speaking on Oyerepa FM, the mother of the boy who joined the Amasaman-based soccer academy three years ago, stated that she initially did not want to release her son to the club, having turned down the reputable WAFA Academy earlier.
She however reluctantly agreed to let the son join the team due to fear of sabotaging his son’s football career as a number of scouts had been impressed with his talent.
She now regrets her decision as the son has become a victim of sodomy by the coach who has been identified as Ibrahim Anyass.
“I was initially hesitant and didn’t want my son to leave home because of how he is. He’s someone who does not like eating and needs special attention so I always wanted to be close to him. Eventually, I had to release him because I didn’t want to be accused of blocking my son’s path to success. He was taken to a team at Amasaman in Accra. For three years, I visited him periodically with food items until recently when I fell ill.
“While I was unwell, I tried consistently to reach the coach but he never answered any of my calls. After successive failures, I used someone’s phone to call the coach and he picked this time around. I spoke to my son and told him that I had been unwell for some time. I also quizzed him on why he had never called me and he said their phones were seized.
“Two weeks later, I received information that my son was sick so I called the coach who downplayed the seriousness of the situation. As a mother, I was not okay with the situation so I decided to visit the place and see things for myself. The coach had promised that my son was receiving healthcare but I discovered that it wasn’t true. He only took him to the hospital on the eve of my visit.
“Immediately, I saw my son, I knew that he would be dead if I didn’t take any action within three days. So I forcefully brought back my son and for the last three months, we’ve been moving from hospitals. I thought he had been cursed so I pressed him to tell me the truth about his situation. One day, he told me that he was sodomized by the coach. He immediately went into a coma after the confession and for the past three months, he has been battling for his life. I haven’t slept since,” she narrated on Oyerepa FM.
Club’s action
A day after the disturbing revelations, officials of the club visited Oyerepa FM to engage with the mother and host of the show.
The club have also issued a statement suspending the coach, pending further investigations.
Meanwhile, the 16-year-old is on admission at the Komfo Anokye Hospital with his mother appealing for support to cover his medical bills.
During her vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 22, 2025, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Ministerial Nominee for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, pledged to advocate for extended maternity leave policies in Ghana.
Dr. Lartey emphasized the importance of prolonging the current three-month maternity leave to six months, highlighting that such an extension would allow mothers adequate time to recover and bond with their new-borns.
She stated, “It is important for women to have a prolonged leave period, not only to take care of the children but also to properly heal.”
She also addressed the significance of paternity leave, noting that extending parental leave to fathers would ensure both parents have sufficient time to bond with their new-borns and share caregiving responsibilities. This approach, she argued, aligns with modern family dynamics and promotes gender equity in caregiving roles.
To achieve these objectives, Dr. Lartey expressed her commitment to collaborating with various stakeholders, including civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, and gender advocates. She stated, “I will sit with all stakeholders, CSOs who are deep into it, and I will join the many advocates to look at what is best and ensure that we push it.”
Currently, Ghana offers a three-month maternity leave to both spouses. However, Dr. Lartey’s proposal to extend this to six months has been applauded by many.
Parliament’s Appointments Committee has begun vetting Ali Adolf John, the Northern Regional Minister nominee, as part of the ongoing process to assess the regional ministerial nominees by President John Dramani Mahama.
Ali Adolf John, who upon his nomination, served as the Northern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), appeared before the Committee on Thursday to outline his vision for the Northern Region and address concerns raised by the Committee members.
In a candid interview on Kessben FM, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua, has responded to internal calls for accountability regarding the party’s loss in the 2024 elections.
Kodua revealed that he has specifically identified certain party members who may attempt to blame him for the NPP’s defeat, adding that they would soon “hear from him.”
The Minister-designate for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has assured that a comprehensive framework will be developed to protect vulnerable children and support their families if she is approved by Parliament.
She stressed that the initiative, which aligns with the NDC manifesto, would be implemented without partisanship to ensure the safety and development of all Ghanaian children.
During her vetting at the Appointments Committee yesterday, she said “this is for the betterment of the Ghanaian child, and it will not be politicised.”
Ms Lartey revealed that the framework would also focus on empowering economically disadvantaged mothers especially, many of whom are trapped in vulnerability and unable to adequately care for their children.
She pledged that the Ministry would ensure these women are provided with access to financial resources through the proposed Women’s Development Bank, which would offer flexible loans and other financial services tailored to their needs.
“The traditional banking system favours men more than women. Establishing this bank will focus on women, and I am confident Ghanaians will appreciate its implementation,” she stated.
On education, she emphasised the importance of incorporating family values into the national curriculum to instill strong social principles in children.
She also assured of the complete decentralisationof the School Feeding Programme to improve the quality of meals and ensure timely food distribution.
The Minister-designate stressed the need to work closely with stakeholders to make the feeding programme more effective, especially at the district level.
“By decentralising the programme, we can monitor quality and ensure food items are supplied on time,” she said.
Regarding the psychological and physical needs of women, Ms Lartey stated that the four months maternity leave indicated in the manifesto of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), will be implemented to enable mothers to heal properly after childbirth and care for their babies.
She encouraged private companies to establish workplace daycare facilities, highlighting their potential to increase productivity and job satisfaction among working mothers.
“A psychologically healthy woman can significantly enhance a company’s productivity,” she added.
In addition, she promised that when approved, she would ensure a review and expansion of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme to capture more vulnerable women, especially those in rural areas.
She assured that strict measures would be taken to ensure only qualified individuals benefit from the initiative.
In furtherance Ms Lartey called for intersectoral collaboration to address these issues comprehensively, assuring that the Women’s Development Bank and related initiatives would be adequately captured in the national budget.
She also expressed optimism that these measures would transform the lives of women and children across the country.

The Supreme Court has adjourned indefinitely, hearing an application by the NDC seeking to overturn a decision of the High Court for the Electoral Commission to complete collation in Tema Central, Okaikoi Central, Ablekuma North and Techiman South.
Even though the commission has since completed the collation in three of the constituencies except for Ablekuma North and declared the NPP candidates victors, the NDC wants the apex court to exercise its supervisory powers and quash the decision of the High Court judge.
However, when the case was called on Thursday, it emerged in court that the NPP candidates had not been served.
The Supreme Court thus adjourned Sine die.
The NDC applied to appeal the court’s decision, which ordered the EC to complete the collation process in these constituencies. However, the NDC was unable to serve the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidates involved in the case.
When the case was called it became clear that the issue of non-service persisted. As a result, the judge decided to adjourn the matter sine die (indefinitely).
The delay in serving the NPP candidates is a significant procedural issue preventing the court from moving forward with the application.
The situation pertains to the unresolved electoral results in these constituencies, with both parties engaged in ongoing legal battles over the legitimacy of the counts and the final declarations of the EC.

The Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga has assured the people of Ghana that consistent with the overwhelming mandate given to President John Dramani Mahama and the 187 members of this caucus, they will rigorously pursue the agenda to reset Ghana.
He called on the government to remain steadfast in its commitment to the people of Ghana.
“Their trust must inspire our actions and guide our decisions. It is for them that we will build a prosperous, united, and democratic Ghana,” he said in a statement after being formally chosen by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the Majority Leader for the 9th Parliament.
He further said in his statement that he is guided by the illustrious precedents set by former distinguished leaders of their caucus.
“20 years ago, our current Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin led us. Then Hon. Cletus Avoka, Hon. Benjamin Kunbuor, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, and most recently, Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson. Their leadership styles will remain guideposts.
“As Leader of the House and Leader of Government Business, I assure the people of Ghana that, consistent with the overwhelming mandate given to President John Dramani Mahama and the 187 members of this caucus, we will rigorously pursue the agenda to reset Ghana. As President John Dramani Mahama has said, these overwhelming numbers will not be abused. Even though we are an overwhelming majority, we will strive for inclusivity, consensus building and deeply uphold the principles of probity and accountability in the fulfilment of the dreams of our founding fathers. We will foster national unity, advance democracy and ensure equitable development,” the Bawku Central lawmaker said.
He added “The road ahead will not be without challenges, but I am confident that together, through constructive dialogue and mutual respect, we can overcome any obstacles and deliver on our collective vision.
“Let us remain steadfast in our commitment to the people of Ghana. Their trust must inspire our actions and guide our decisions. It is for them that we will build a prosperous, united, and democratic Ghana. A few moments ago, I was formally chosen by my party – the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and my caucus made up of 187 Members of Parliament to lead the NDC caucus in the 9th Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana.
“I will be the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business of the 9th Parliament. With humility and profound gratitude to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) chaired by Hon Johnson Asiedu Nketia, and my esteemed colleagues in Parliament, I wholeheartedly accept this appointment and the confidence reposed in me.
“I first arrived in Parliament on 7th January 2005. I have served in the Office of the President, served as a Deputy Minister of State, a Minister of State. I have been out of parliament once staged a return. I have been in the front bench of Parliament since I arrived here 20 years ago. But I started my career as a student leader and then as an Assemblyman for Sabongari in Bawku Municipality. I stand fulfilled today as the man to lead the largest majority in the history of our 4th Republic.”
I have three children from relationships outside of my marriage. They are 16, 13, and 9 years old, each with a different mother. My wife doesn’t know about them, but lately, I feel it’s time to come clean because I’ve been struggling with this secret and it’s taking a toll on me.
We’ve been married for seventeen years and have two wonderful daughters, ages 16 and 12. Our older daughter is the same age as my son from another relationship. Sometimes, when I think about it, I feel like keeping this secret forever might be easier.
The first child is with my ex-girlfriend. I had planned to marry her, but for various reasons, I chose my wife instead. Just three days before my wedding, my ex came to visit me at work, and we ended up having sex.
That’s when she became pregnant, so my son is three months older than my child with my wife. Since our marriage was still new, I kept it a secret. I rented an apartment for my ex to live in with our child and visited them occasionally.
My second child is from a woman I dated in university, and the third is with my wife’s friend, who is the main problem now. She’s the reason I haven’t confessed to my wife. She’s a close friend of hers and even visits us with the child. My wife believes the child’s father is abroad, as that’s what her friend has told her.
She even drops him off with us for days at a time while she travels. My wife adores the boy and treats him like her own.
Since she doesn’t have a son, she enjoys having him around. The boy carries my surname because I named him, yet everyone except the mother and I believes it’s just a coincidence.
Every morning, these thoughts consume my mind. I have money, but I can’t do the things I want to because I’m overwhelmed with responsibilities.
I send at least GH¢5000.00 to each of the women every month, along with covering various other expenses. My wife thinks I’m either mismanaging our finances or hiding something from her.
She knows how much my business is worth and how wealthy we should be by now, and it’s starting to worry her. I have so many unfinished projects, and the stress is mounting. But my biggest concern is my wife’s friend. If I were to confess to my wife, I feel like all of this could finally end.
This woman constantly demands money from me as if it’s nothing. I can’t complain, though, because she threatens to expose our secret if I do.
I’ve bought her three cars, while my wife still only has one. She lives in an apartment that’s bigger than the one my family and I call home. I know I need to come clean to my wife, but I just don’t know how. I’m at a loss for how to explain everything to the woman I love.

The case involves claims of approximately $277 million in damages
Cassius Mining Ltd. has contested the appointment of Professor Richard Oppong as Ghana’s arbitrator in an ongoing international arbitration case.
The case involves claims of approximately $277 million in damages for alleged breaches of contract and statute by the Government of Ghana.
According to a report by Daily Graphic, the challenge, filed on October 23, 2024, was based on concerns regarding Professor Oppong’s independence and impartiality.
The report stated that the grounds for the challenge were that Prof. Oppong had been nominated to the Supreme Court of Ghana and failed to disclose this nomination, raising “reasonable doubts” about his impartiality.
On January 17, 2025, the Tribunal members ruled that Cassius’s challenge was justified and admissible.
They stated that the “overall circumstances relied upon by [Cassius] in support of its challenge give rise to reasonable cause to doubt the arbitrator’s independence or impartiality.”
In response to the Tribunal’s invitation to step aside voluntarily, Prof. Oppong agreed to resign.
The Tribunal then invited the parties to discuss the procedure and timelines for appointing a replacement arbitrator.
James Arkoudis, Chief Executive Officer of Cassius Mining Ltd., responded positively to the resignation, stating, “The resignation of Prof. Oppong is a significant step in maintaining the integrity of the arbitral proceedings, and we welcome Prof. Oppong’s offer to resign as a Tribunal member.”
The arbitration case originated from a memorial filed by Cassius on December 23, 2024, outlining claims supported by witness statements and expert reports.
The company is seeking damages of approximately $277 million for alleged breaches of contract and statutory obligations by Ghana.
Cassius and its legal counsel are now considering the next steps, including the appointment of a replacement arbitrator and the potential implications of the successful challenge for the case.

Former Asante Kotoko coach Isaac Boateng, popularly known as Coach Opeele, has highlighted how societal conditioning fosters biases from an early age.
According to Coach Opeele, some Ghanaians grew up harbouring negative sentiments toward specific entities, notably Hearts of Oak and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
This statement follows social media backlash against a tweet in which Coach Opeele praised the appointment of Dr. Randy Abbey as the CEO of COCOBOD.
A critic accused Abbey of contributing to the decline of sports in Ghana, labelling his leadership as incompetent and biased.
In response, Coach Opeele defended his stance, explaining that such criticisms often stem from ingrained biases from childhood.
He shared that he, too, was socialized to harbor similar prejudices but has since outgrown them.
“I don’t blame you. Your profile made me understand the kind of home you were brought up in, as I was raised the same way,” he tweeted on X (formerly Twitter).
“We were brought up to hate anything Hearts of Oak and NDC. Thank God entering the media helped me grow out of this petty hate. One day, you will learn this SENSE!” he tweeted on X.
Praise poets honour the servicemen, more than a century after World War One
Hundreds of South African servicemen, mostly black, who died during World War One have been honoured with a new memorial in Cape Town after going unrecognised for more than a century.
The 1,772 men worked in dangerous and gruelling non-combatant roles in East Africa but until now, they had no known grave or commemoration.
Individually engraved timber posts now bear each serviceman’s name at the new memorial.
Princess Anne, president of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), unveiled the memorial at a moving ceremony attended by relatives of the dead.
In 2021, the UK apologised after a report blamed “pervasive racism” for the failure to properly honour at least 100,000 black and Asian troops who died fighting on its side.
Relatives said they were “proud” and “happy” to see the contributions of the servicemen being finally recognised at the Cape Town Labour Corps Memorial.
The men worked as porters, wagon drivers and on the railways.
One of those honoured was Bhesengile Delihlazo, a driver who died on 21 January 1917.
His great-nephew Elliot Malunga Delihlazo said the family was happy to finally discover when Delihlazo died, even though the question of exactly where remained unanswered.
And while the serviceman has already been privately honoured with a memorial stone at the Delihlazo homestead, his relative said: “It makes us proud really, that at last, we can be one of the families that people can talk about in the due course of history”.
Job Hlakula’s great-grandson said they were “humbled” by his inclusion in the memorial.
“We are very proud of him. We even rejoice when we talk about Job, it’s a pride that we’ve got in our name, for him to be remembered,” said Zweletu Hlakula.
The CWGC, tasked with commemorating those who died in the two world wars, said the memorial was a “culmination of years of work”.
“It acts as a poignant tribute to the predominantly black South Africans who fought in Africa during the First World War and who were not commemorated at the time,” said the commission’s director general Claire Horton.

From L to R; Afenyo-Markin, Dzifa Gomashie and Bernard Ahiafor
During Dzifa Abla Gomashie’s vetting as minister-designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Afenyo-Markin, a ranking member of the Appointments Committee, took the opportunity to ask her questions that delved into her personal life, including her background, social life, and even her place of residence.
Afenyo-Markin focused on a section of Dzifa Gomashie’s CV that listed her current place of residence as Lakeside Estate in Accra, a detail that clicked his interest.
He proceeded to ask if she owned the property, to which Dzifa Gomashie confirmed she did.
He then inquired about the “root of title” for the house; the original owner from whom she acquired the property.
Not stopping there, he further asked if she would be willing to provide the committee’s leadership with the root of title if requested.
At this point, the Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, intervened, questioning why Afenyo-Markin was probing so deeply into aspects of the nominee’s personal life, particularly in a manner that seemed more like an investigation.
Bernard Ahiafor said Afenyo-Markin’s line of questioning was akin to being part of the “Operation Recover All Loot” (ORAL) team, a five-member initiative recently appointed by President-elect John Dramani Mahama to lead the country’s anti-corruption efforts.
Afenyo-Markin, who also serves as the Minority Leader in Parliament, responded, stating that the tables had turned at that particular moment and the ruling administration was now experiencing the same scrutiny it is applying to others.
Here’s how things unfolded:
Afenyo-Markin: “You indicated in your CV that you live at Lakeside Estate, Adenta, Accra. *Mentions house number*. Is that your own property?”
Dzifa Gomashie: “Mr. Chairman, it is my own property. Thank you.”
Afenyo-Markin: “From whom did your root of title originate? The person from whom you originally acquired the property?”
Dzifa Gomashie: “I bought it from the Lakeside Company.”
Afenyo-Markin: “So Lakeside acquired the land from the government, as we can see from your lease?”
Dzifa Gomashie: “Mr. Chairman, I do not recall the details. I had a lawyer who facilitated the transaction, and I do not recall the specifics.”
Afenyo-Markin: “If given the opportunity, would you be willing to share the title with the leadership of the committee, so we can understand the root of the title?”
Dzifa Gomashie: “I certainly would, if it is demanded.”
Committee Chairman Bernard Ahiafor: “Hon. Ranking Member, it’s as if you’re part of ORAL.”
Afenyo-Markin: “A little bit of medication on your tongue, and you see how it is!”
Dzifa Gomashie appeared before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, for her vetting, which will determine her confirmation as the substantive Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts.
She was nominated for the position on January 16, 2025, in a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson to the President.
Having served as Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture under the Mahama administration from 2013 to 2017, Dzifa Gomashie is also a two-term Member of Parliament for the Ketu South Constituency, where she has been an advocate for development and community empowerment initiatives.
Wa, (UW/R), Jan. 22, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has been lauded for settling on Dr. Hassan Rashid Pelpuo and Charles Lwanga Puozuing (Esq) to serve in his government.
Professor Elijah Yendaw, a Professor at the Faculty of Public Policy and Governance at the SDD University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS) made the commendation, on Thursday.
Dr. Pelpuo, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Wa Central Constituency, had been nominated as the Minister-designate for Labour, Jobs, and Employment while Mr Puozuing, the Upper West Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), had been appointed as the Upper West Regional Minister-designate.
Prof. Yendaw, the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Public Policy and Governance at the SDD-UBIDS, with specialisation in Migration, Security, and International Relations, said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Wa on Wednesday.
That followed the announcement of Dr. Pelpuo and Mr Puoziung’s nominations alongside other ministerial appointments by President Mahama on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
The Professor also thanked the President for appointing ACP Abdul-Osman Razak, a son of the region, as the National Security Coordinator.
Prof. Yendaw, who doubled as the Director of the Centre for Migration, Security and International Relations at the University, indicated that appointing sons and daughters of the Upper West Region to serve in his government was worthy of commendation.
“Mr President, your choice of Dr. Hassan Rashid Pelpuo to head the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment is commendable and the people of the Upper West Region will forever be grateful to you.
“The people of the region are also grateful to you for naming our next Regional Minister, Mr Charles Lwanga Puozuing.
I am confident that they will live up to expectations to support you deliver the best of governance to Ghanaians,” Prof. Yendaw stated.
While commending the President for the appointments made so far, Prof. Yendaw, also the Upper West Regional Coordinator of the Progressive Intellectuals (PI), appealed to him to consider appointments from the professional and technical fields in his government.
He said: “The SDD-UBIDS’ branch of the Progressive Intellectuals is endowed with competent human resources who can serve in key technical areas in your government to support you (the President) to fix the country.”
Prof. Yendaw also thanked the leadership of the NDC in the region for its “credible performance” in the just-ended election, which saw the party return to power.
He, however, called on them to remain united and do everything possible to rally the required human resources from the region to play crucial roles in government to make the north and Ghana a better place for all.
Progressive Intellectuals is a National Democratic Congress (NDC)-affiliated group of University Professors and Administrators who were instrumental in the 2024 election campaign to bring President John Mahama and the NDC back to power.
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has demanded a concrete update on the investigation in the murder case of Ahmed Suale, an Investigative Journalist, by the end of March 2025.
“If by the end of March 2025, we have not seen or heard a satisfactory reaction to our demand, we shall proceed to the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice to seek resolution of this matter,” Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, the GJA President said at a news conference in Accra on Wednesday, January 22.
He said it was very unfortunate and disappointing that six years after the murder of Ahmed Suale, no arrest had been made.
“What is even more disheartening is the lackadaisical police investigations into the murder. You may recall the shocking disclosure made by the former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, in February 2024 that his office had not received from the Police any docket fit for prosecution or action on the murder of Ahmed Suale. This was five years after the murder of the investigative journalist.
“Just last week, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare-Obeng, popularly called A-Plus, publicly indicated that he had given information to the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) regarding the suspected killers of Ahmed Suale.
He went further to threaten that if the Police did not come public with investigations into the killing, he would be compelled to publish the name of the suspect he submitted to the Police.
The comments made by A-Plus have raised many questions that cast doubt on the willingness of the Police to resolve this matter,” he said.
Mr Dwumour noted that the GJA also intended to take the case of Latif Iddrisu, formerly of Multimedia, to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice if nothing concrete came from the Police by the end of March 2025.
Latif was brutally assaulted by unidentified police officers at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department while covering a demonstration by some supporters of the National Democratic Congress.
The assault damaged his skull and since then, he has been battling for life.
However, six years after the incident, the GJA President said police investigations had been rather tardy.
“The Police claim they do not have or cannot find evidence for prosecution. They further claim the CCTV at the crime scene was faulty on that fateful day Latif was assaulted. The Police are saying since the crime has no expiry date, anytime or day they would find evidence, they would initiate prosecution. We shall proceed to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice to hear what they will also say on this case,” he added.
He urged the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice-designate and the President to take a keen interest in the case.
Mr Kofi Yeboah, the General Secretary of GJA, said the Association did not appreciate the response from the Police, hence the need to go to the ECOWAS court should the need arise.
The Association, he said, had been well advised legally and would leave the matter in the hands of the ECOWAS court if the matter failed to be handled rightfully and as expected by the authorities concerned.
Mr Omar Faruk Osman, the President of the Federation of African Journalists, said the Federation was watching closely the unjust attacks on journalists especially regarding the murder of Ahmed Suale and believed in the need for justice to prevail.
He said the Federation stood in full support of GJA to speak against impunity, adding that it would not hesitate to take the matter to international forums and the International Court of Justice and the UN Council if the Police failed to bring justice to Ahmed Suale, his family and all journalists.
A unique moment of camaraderie took place in Parliament on January 22, 2025, during the vetting of George Opare Addo, the Minister-designate for Youth Development and Empowerment.
In an exchange that piqued interest, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin publicly recognised Opare Addo as a fellow Freemason, drawing attention to the role of the fraternal organisation among Ghana’s public figures.
The Northern Region Minister-Designate, Ali Adolf G. John, has vowed to address the persistent issue of alleged witches facing abuse and ostracism in some communities.
Speaking during his vetting on Thursday, January 23, Adolf expressed deep concern over the plight of accused individuals, particularly elderly women, who often endure public humiliation, banishment, and physical harm.
He pledged to collaborate closely with traditional rulers to protect accused individuals and facilitate their reintegration into society.
Adolf described some reported cases as horrific and underscored the importance of collective action to ensure dignity and safety for all.
“Most of the aged are often accused of witchcraft and some of the footage is horrific so I will do everything possible with the traditional leaders to handle this issue.
“We need the intervention of the traditional rulers to help us help these people to reintegrate them back into society.”

President John Dramani Mahama has issued a stern warning to his newly sworn-in ministers, making it clear that arrogance and disrespect toward Ghanaians will not be tolerated under his administration. Speaking at the Jubilee House on January 22, 2025, during the swearing-in ceremony of six ministerial appointees, the President emphasized that public servants must lead with humility and accountability.
“We must exhibit tolerance for their views and work to meet their aspirations. This government will not tolerate arrogance or disrespect for the people who elected us into office. Modesty and prudence must be the guiding principles upon which you, myself, and our Vice President fashion our governance,” he declared.
President Mahama reminded the appointees that their authority comes from the people and urged them to prioritize the needs and aspirations of Ghanaians. “As I pointed out during my inaugural speech, Ghanaians have, through their votes, declared their intention to demand the highest standards of governance, and we cannot afford to fail them,” he said.
The President also stressed the importance of transparency and fairness in their dealings, warning that anti-corruption institutions would be empowered to investigate and take action against any wrongdoing. “The people of Ghana will hold us accountable for the trust they have placed in our hands. It cannot be business as usual. We must be transparent and fair in all our dealings,” he added.
Ghanaian record producer and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Lynx Group, Richie Mensah, has proffered advice to his fellow entertainers in a recent interview on Daybreak Hitz with DJ Slim.
Richie Mensah on the show advocated for hard work over complaints, urging artistes to take control of their careers and financial futures.
He further noted that it is better for creatives to take charge of their careers than repose their hope in government.
“Stop looking for help from the government. Do it yourself! When we entertainers start doing things properly, stop swerving taxes, and begin generating substantial income, the government will have no choice but to take notice. We need to stop thinking we’re special and that we need to be chosen,” he said.
Richie’s message is underscored by his company’s launch of a new music distribution platform, a move aimed at empowering artistes.
He explained, “we’ve semi-launched a music distribution platform to empower people to be creatives.”
This initiative directly addresses the challenges many artistes face in navigating the complexities of the music industry. This platform promises to simplify the process and maximize opportunities for Ghanaian musicians. The email address for this platform is Email [email protected].
Mensah’s bold statement is a call for a shift in mindset within the Ghanaian entertainment industry, promoting self-sufficiency and proactive entrepreneurship over dependence on external support.

Kefilwe Mabote is a popular South African influencer and media personality
After encountering Christ, one of the many changes Kefilwe Mabote has made in her life is letting go of some worldly possessions she now views as vanity or associated with the demonic realm.
South African influencer Kefilwe Mabote, known for her appearance on the ‘Young, Famous and African’ Netflix series, has posted a video on Instagram setting fire to designer items, many of which were from the luxury brand Versace.
Kefilwe Mabote, who had been a pioneer in luxury fashion influencing in South Africa, filmed herself burning several Versace pieces, particularly those with the ‘Medusa’ logo.
In her Instagram story, she wrote, “Burning the Medusa face was one of the most freeing and therapeutic things I’ve ever done. It was part of breaking down the idols I unknowingly built in my heart, the very things that distracted me from fully walking with Jesus.”
She emphasised that she has found God and that there are many things she once followed and didn’t understand were actually evil, adding that these revelations have now become clearer to her.
Prior to this, she kickstarted 2025 by giving away some of her luxury clothes, including some high-end designer pieces, to her loyal followers.
Kefilwe, butressing on her spiritual awakening, mentioned practices such as idolatry, horoscopes, new age beliefs, unforgiveness, soul ties, certain cultural traditions, wrong associations, and even some social media trends as “evil things” from which she has repented.

play videoFile Photo: A 16-year-old footballer has been allegedly sodomized by his coach
Club’s action:
A day after the disturbing revelations, officials of the club visited Oyerepa FM to engage with the mother and host of the show.
The club have also issued a statement suspending the coach, pending further investigations.
Meanwhile, the 16-year-old is on admission at the Komfo Anokye Hospital with his mother appealing for support to cover his medical bills.
A group named NDC Loyalists Against Injustice has expressed its displeasure over President John Mahama’s appointment of Anthony K. Sarpong as Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
According to the group, the GRA boss is a known sympathizer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and may not serve the interests of the government effectively in the discharge of his duties.
The group stated that it hoped the people who worked tirelessly for the NDC Party to secure victory in the 2024 general election would be adequately rewarded, and not overlooked or sidelined for any reasons.
In a statement, it noted that His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has failed to live up to the confidence placed in him, specifically in relation to his appointment at the helm of the GRA.
“His appointment of Mr. Anthony K. Sarpong is shocking and disappointing because this is a man who has direct ties to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). In fact, Sarpong was appointed by President Nana Akufo-Addo to serve on the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG) in September 2020.”
“What makes this more troubling is the fact that such a person, who served alongside other known NPP-aligned personalities like Mrs. Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah-who also became the boss at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO)-would be given such a distinguished political appointment ahead of the wealth of other experienced NDC figures. These individuals have committed their time and efforts to this great party, helping it win a decisive election in 2024, as has also been emphatically represented in the Parliament of Ghana.”
The group warned the president to revoke the appointment or face their wrath.
“We are, by this release, serving notice to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama that we are appalled and completed disgusted by this appointment to the GRA and demand that he, as a matter of urgency, recalls this appointment or risk facing very unpalatable protests from us.”
STATEMENT BY NDC LOYALISTS AGAINST INJUSTICE AGAINST THE APPOINTMENT OF ANTHONY K. SARPONG AS GRA COMMISSIONER-GENERAL BY H. E. JOHN MAHAMA
It has become pressingly necessary for us to issue this press statement in utter disappointment of the appointment of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama’s appointment of Mr. Anthony K. Sarpong for the role of Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
His Excellency has proven beyond doubts that he is a man who is poised to work in the interests of Ghanaians and to ensure that there is an equal distribution of his selection of appointees or nominations for critical offices of public service. And we commend him for the tough job he has been able to execute in the last 14 Days, in fulfilment of his promise to Ghanaians.
In all, the President has made some of the best choices for all the sectors and as he continues to do, for several corporations and institutions of state, with queues of National Democratic Congress (NDC) loyalists, who have put in their sweats and blood, literally, to give the party the magnanimous victory it recorded in the 2024 Election, still inexhausted. The hopes are that the people who got our Great NDC Party to this junction of our political journey, will be adequately rewarded, and not overlooked or sidestepped for whatever reasons.
But it has appeared that His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has failed to live up to the confidence that we have all placed in him, specifically in relation to his appointment at the helm of the GRA. His appointment of Mr. Anthony K. Sarpong is shocking and disappointing because this is a man who has direct ties to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). In fact, Sarpong was appointed by President Nana Akufo-Addo to serve on the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG), in September 2020.
What makes this the more troubling is the fact that such a person, who served together with other known NPP-aligned personalities like Mrs. Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah – who also became the boss at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), would be given such a distinguished political appointment ahead of the wealth of other experienced NDC figures who have committed their sweat to this great party, helping it win such a decisive election in 2024, as has been emphatically also represented in the Parliament of Ghana.
We are, by this release, serving notice to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama that we are appalled and completed disgusted by this appointment to the GRA and demand that he, as a matter of urgency, recalls this appointment or risk facing very unpalatable protests from us.
We must state that the confidence, high expectations and nationwide trust that Ghanaians have reposed in him and in this NDC administration is something we are all happy about, and would not intentionally wish to mar that, but if such moves, as what has happened at the GRA persist, we will be pushed to the wall to do so.
The hardworking NDC members who were in the field and in the background, solidly working to get the party back to power cannot sit and allow this and Mr President, respectfully, please do the needful. There are other people more deserving of this than this NPP-stained person known as Mr. Anthony K. Sarpong.

Veteran sports journalist Patrick Osei Agyemang, popularly known as Countryman Songo has launched a scathing critique of Dr. Randy Abbey following his recent appointment as Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee.
Known for his bold and unfiltered opinions, Songo questioned Dr Abbey’s credentials and suitability for the role.
This criticism comes after Dr. Abbey, a former host of Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, was named Chairman of the newly formed Black Stars Management Committee.
He is joined on the committee by former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah and Moses Armah, Samuel Aboabire, and Richard Nsenkyire.
Speaking with his characteristic passion on his Fire for Fire show, Songo acknowledged Dr. Abbey’s expertise but expressed doubts about his ability to bring success to Ghana football.
He referenced Dr. Abbey’s past management roles, which he described as underwhelming, and argued that these made him an unsuitable candidate for the position.
“Randy Abbey’s intelligence and knowledge of sports are undeniable, but does that necessarily make him the only viable candidate for the job? His tenure alongside Kwasi Nyantakyi was marked by a lack of trophies, and his reappointment has yielded similar results,” Songo asserted.
The outspoken journalist also criticized Dr. Abbey’s involvement in key decision-making processes during Ghana’s recent football campaigns, which ended in disappointment.
“Abbey was part of the committee that oversaw Ghana’s disastrous performance at the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, where he played a significant role in the appointment of head coach Milovan Rajevac. He was also part of the management committee during the 2022 World Cup and the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, both of which ended in failure,” Songo said.
Songo further called for fresh leadership in Ghana football, arguing that new perspectives and ideas are needed to reverse the team’s declining fortunes.
“With things only getting worse despite his long tenure, perhaps it’s time to consider alternative candidates who can inject fresh perspectives and ideas into the team,” he added.
Nigerian entertainer, Noble Igwe, has boldly expressed his opinion that, regardless of the amount of money spent on fixing frontals, it only serves to make ladies look tacky and untidy.
In a candid post shared on his Instagram story, he pointed out the ways in which wearing frontals can detract from a woman’s appearance, noting how it can give off an unkempt look.

The Saboba District Fire Officer, ADO1 Yussif Issahaku
It has emerged that the Saboba District Fire Officers were compelled to use buckets to quench the fire outbreak at the Saboba EP Senior High School in the Northern Region.
The situation was a result of the malfunctioning of the fire vehicles’ water pumps when they arrived at the scene.
The Saboba District Fire Officer, ADO1 Yussif Issahaku, who confirmed the incident to journalists said it was unfortunate that the fire officers experienced a pump failure at the fire scene.
“When the personnel got to the scene there was a pump failure, we tested the machine this morning and so we are sure that any fire incident can be handled but it’s so unfortunate that when we got to the fire scene the pump failed us,” he said.
He revealed that they had no option but to use buckets with the help of some students and their teacher to quench the fire which took a much long time than usual to control it.
“We had no option but to start fetching the water in buckets with the assistance of the students and the staff we were able to quench the fire,” he narrated.
The fire outbreak incident has resulted in the death of one female student at the Saboba EP Senior High School.
The Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has issued a directive for the removal of all excavators and mining equipment operating along the banks of the Birim River.
This move comes in response to alarming reports from the Ghana Water Company Limited about rising turbidity levels in raw water sourced from the river, which supplies key water treatment plants in the Eastern Region, including the Kyebi Water Treatment Plant.
In a press release dated January 22, 2025, the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council gave illegal miners a one-month ultimatum to remove their equipment, with the deadline set for February 28, 2025. The directive aims to safeguard the region’s water supply, which has been under threat due to the destructive practices of illegal mining in the Birim River. According to the Ghana Water Company, if these turbidity levels are not addressed, the Kyebi water treatment plant could become inoperable, severely affecting the water supply to Kyebi and surrounding communities.
Local residents have been increasingly concerned about the quality of their water, with many reporting irregular supply and poor water quality. The press release, signed by State Secretary Mr. D.M. Ofori-Atta, stressed that a special task force would be established to confiscate any mining equipment still in operation after the deadline. The council has also emphasized that no mining should take place near or in any river, and that all excavators and related equipment must be removed.
“The Council wishes to inform the general public that a Task Force has been constituted to rid the Birim River of illegal miners operating along its banks. All owners of excavator machines are hereby ordered to remove them on or before February 28, 2025,” the statement said.
The Birim River is the primary source for several critical water treatment plants, including the Kyebi, Anyinam, Bunsu, and Osino plants, which collectively produce 164,000 gallons of water daily. However, the Anyinam and Osino plants have faced operational challenges due to the declining quality of their water sources, with both temporarily shut down. The Kyebi and Bunsu plants are struggling to meet demand, operating below capacity and contributing to erratic water supply.
The government has previously acknowledged the harm caused by illegal mining activities, especially those that involve toxic chemicals like mercury, which pollute water resources and damage aquatic ecosystems. In late 2024, the Akufo-Addo administration deployed the military in a renewed operation to fight illegal mining, destroying equipment such as industrial water pumps and excavators.
As per the Water Resources Commission Act 1996 (Act 522), individuals who violate laws protecting water bodies could face significant penalties, including fines and imprisonment. The Okyenhene’s directive serves as a critical effort to protect the Birim River, ensuring a steady and clean water supply for the growing population of the Eastern Region.

From L to R: Afenyo-Markin, Dzifa Gomashie and Bernard Ahiafor
Afenyo-Markin, who also serves as the Minority Leader in Parliament, responded, stating that the tables had turned at that particular moment and the ruling administration is in the moment experiencing the same scrutiny it is applying to others.

Workers at KEDA have rejected efforts by CBMWU of the TUC to introduce unionization
Workers at TWYFORD KEDA, a Chinese ceramics manufacturer in Ghana, have firmly rejected efforts by the Construction and Building Materials Workers Union (CBMWU) of the TUC to introduce unionization, calling it an unnecessary disruption to their well-established working environment.
Speaking to the media on January 20, 2025, employees from various departments expressed their contentment with their current working conditions and strong relationship with the company’s management and HR department.
They claimed CBMWU had sent unsolicited communications to all TWYFORD KEDA workers, including senior management, in December 2024, encouraging them to join the union.
The company’s management raised concerns about the unauthorized use of personal worker data, claiming the union violated the Data Protection Act.
KEDA has since demanded an explanation and the removal of the illegally obtained data. Despite this, the CBMWU continued their efforts to recruit workers, which the company sees as a serious breach of privacy and legal compliance.
Management presented evidence of financial transactions from union officials to a contract worker, alleging that union representatives used monetary incentives to influence employees.
This has caused disturbances in the engineering unit, where some temporary workers are involved in ongoing expansion projects.
While KEDA does not oppose individual employees’ rights to unionize, it insists that no official dealings will take place until the source of the illegal data acquisition is clarified and the personal information is destroyed.
The company employs over 4,100 workers, many of whom live in free dormitories provided by the company in Aboadze.
Some workers who spoke with the media praised KEDA for offering free lunch, accommodation, utilities, and salary increases.
Judith Aggrey, a finance specialist, noted that salary hikes and overtime opportunities were offered regularly.
Other workers, including engineers and HR staff, shared similar views, emphasizing the company’s compliance with labor laws and workers’ satisfaction with their conditions.
Isaac Blay, an admin supervisor in charge of the company’s canteen, highlighted the efficiency of the company’s meal provision, and dismissed the need for a union, noting that the company already takes care of its workers’ needs.
TWYFORD KEDA also promotes cultural diversity, offering language training for employees to become translators between Ghanaian and Chinese workers.
Amina from the electrical department shared her experience, saying that those who become translators receive extra allowances.
The press team left the TWYFORD KEDA facility with the impression that workers are largely happy with their employment, but expressed concern that the union’s interference could potentially disrupt the company’s expansion plans, which might impact employment opportunities for local workers.
CBMWU executives have yet to respond to media inquiries regarding the allegations of data misuse and union activities.

Amid mounting tensions within the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), grassroots members are voicing strong objections to the possible appointment of Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko as the new Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA).
While Fianko is undoubtedly qualified for the position, having built a distinguished career in electronic communications and regulatory affairs, his past role in the closure of Radio Gold and other stations has become a contentious issue among the party’s base.
Fianko, who was involved in shutting down several radio stations during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, is viewed by many within the NDC as someone who could do more harm than good if appointed to such an influential position. Critics argue that empowering him now, after his actions against media outlets linked to the NDC, would exacerbate the party’s division and betray the grassroots who worked tirelessly during the campaign. For these members, appointing Fianko feels like a slap in the face to the party’s loyal supporters, especially when other highly qualified individuals within the NDC are being overlooked.
The growing discontent has led to talks of protests, with some suggesting that they will take drastic action if Fianko’s appointment is confirmed. Drawing on past instances where supporters of the NPP forcibly removed a national security coordinator they disapproved of, these members warn that the National Communications Authority could become a target if Fianko takes office. There are also claims that Fianko has the support of a Minister Designate, though many NDC members feel that political influence should not override the need for fairness and loyalty to the party’s core values.
Despite the vocal opposition from some NDC factions, Fianko’s credentials cannot be easily dismissed. His extensive experience, both in Ghana and internationally, positions him as a well-qualified candidate to lead the NCA. According to the NCA website, he brings to the table a wealth of expertise gained over two decades in telecommunications regulation, spectrum management, and policy development. Fianko has also been a prominent figure on the international stage, serving as a consultant and advisor to multiple African countries and global organizations in the telecommunications field.
Moreover, his appointment is seen by some as a necessary step toward reforming and modernizing Ghana’s communications sector. With a career that spans the NCA’s ranks, starting from a National Service position to his current role as Director of the Engineering Division, Fianko has proven himself as a capable leader. His contributions to Ghana’s digital broadcasting migration, mobile licensing processes, and spectrum management are considered vital to the country’s progress in the sector.
However, beyond his qualifications, there is a broader debate among Ghanaians—especially those outside the political elite—on the nature of public sector appointments. Increasingly, there is concern that such positions should be filled based on merit and the skills required for the job, rather than political affiliations or rewards for past loyalty. The public sentiment suggests that appointing individuals based purely on political connections may hinder the country’s development rather than contribute to it.
For now, the NDC leadership faces a difficult challenge. While Fianko may be the right person for the job on paper, the growing dissatisfaction among party members, particularly those at the grassroots level, cannot be ignored. The decision regarding his appointment could have far-reaching consequences for the NDC’s unity and its future political strategies. As the debate unfolds, the question remains whether political loyalty or professional competence will ultimately shape the direction of Ghana’s communications landscape.
