Brentford’s Yoane Wissa emotionally recounts moment a woman poured acid at him

Brentford attacker Yoane Wissa has opened up about a harrowing incident in which he was allegedly attacked with acid.

The 28-year-old Premier League player, a key figure for the Bees, revealed that the traumatic event has left him living in fear.

Wissa, this week testified in a French court, as the alleged perpetrator, identified as Laetitia P., faces trial. She is accused of throwing acid at Wissa and attempting to abduct his infant daughter.

Additionally, she is charged with kidnapping another woman’s baby the following day. If convicted, Laetitia P. could face a prison sentence of up to 30 years.

Recalling the horrific incident during his testimony, Wissa described how it unfolded:

“I opened the door and had liquid thrown in my face. I screamed and couldn’t breathe. My wife called emergency services, and they told me to get under the shower to rinse my eyes.

“At the hospital, they told me my eyes were burned. Someone had to rinse them every hour. It has been a nightmare. Since then, I panic every time I hear a noise. The only thing that kept me going was knowing my children were safe.

“I had surgery on both eyes, and the doctor told me I would need to use eye drops for the rest of my life.”

The ordeal has profoundly impacted Wissa’s mental health and social interactions.

“Since that time, I’ve become withdrawn. I can no longer tolerate being around people I don’t know. I don’t express as much love as I used to, and when I’m walking, I instinctively look behind me,” he added.

Afenyo Markin must slow down else he’ll create a one-person minority — Prof Kobby Mensah

0

Professor Kobby Mensah, an Associate Professor of Marketing at the University of Ghana Business School and an expert in political branding, has advised Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, to share the spotlight in parliamentary discussions.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Friday, January 24, 2025, Prof. Mensah expressed concern over Afenyo-Markin’s dominant presence in debates and public engagements since the 9th Parliament began. He warned that this approach risks overshadowing the collective image of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), replacing it with a single individual’s persona.

“Currently, as we speak, he’s the only image in our minds. Since this process started, he’s the only person you see talking. And that is a very dangerous path to create for a political party in terms of imagery,” Prof. Mensah observed.

He explained that a political party’s image should reflect the strength and diversity of its members rather than focusing on a single individual. “As a political branding expert, I can tell when someone becomes too dominant. You risk replacing the party’s image with your own, creating a one-person minority. You don’t want that,” he emphasized.

To address this, Prof. Mensah urged Afenyo-Markin to provide opportunities for other NPP MPs to take the lead in debates and public discourse. “He should probably let others take the podium instead of always being the one speaking,” he suggested.

This caution comes amidst ongoing discussions about the NPP’s strategic communication and branding ahead of the next general elections. By sharing the spotlight, Afenyo-Markin can help the party showcase a collective voice, reinforcing its brand as a united front representing diverse perspectives.

The expert’s remarks underscore the importance of balanced representation in political communication to maintain the integrity of a party’s brand while avoiding over-reliance on a single figurehead.

Same-Sex Marriage Takes Off In Thailand – 300+ Couples Say ‘I Do’

0

Over 300 couples registered their marriage after Thailand officially became the first Southeast Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage on January 23, 2025, when the Marriage Equality Act came into effect.

This milestone legislation was passed by the National Assembly in March 2024 and received royal assent from King Vajiralongkorn in September 2024.

The new law allows same-sex couples to marry and adopt children, marking a significant step forward for LGBTQ+ rights in Thailand.

According to a report by NewsX, on the first day the Marriage Equality Act went into effect, hundreds of LGBTQ+ couples across the nation lined up to register their marriages, excited to secure the same legal rights as heterosexual couples.

“Thursday, the inaugural day of the law’s enforcement, saw an impressive turnout. Around 300 couples registered their marriages in a festive atmosphere at a special event in a central Bangkok shopping mall.

Across the country, even more couples were expected to complete the formalities at local district offices, signifying a monumental shift in the legal landscape for LGBTQ+ rights” the report read.

The Marriage Equality Act revises Thailand’s Civil and Commercial Code, changing the legal terminology from “men and women” and “husband and wife” to more inclusive terms like “individuals” and “marriage partners.”

This legal change grants same-sex couples full access to the same legal, financial, and medical rights that have long been available to heterosexual couples.

His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Post-Doctoral Fellowship (Canada), Most Promising Researcher (University of Ghana), and the Postcolonialisms Today research grant (Regions Refocus, USA).

Prof. Kpessa-Whyte’s appointment marks the beginning of a new chapter for SIGA. With his visionary leadership and extensive experience in governance and policy, he is well-positioned to drive excellence and ensure that Ghana’s State-Owned Enterprises contribute meaningfully to the nation’s socio-economic growth.

I’ll lay L.I legalising cannabis without delay

0

Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, the Minister-Designate for the Interior, has assured Ghanaians of his unwavering commitment to ensuring the swift enactment of the Narcotics Control Commission Amendment Bill 2023.

This landmark legislation, once passed, will grant the Ministry of Interior the authority to issue licenses for the cultivation of cannabis, unlocking its potential for industrial, medicinal, and economic benefits.

Speaking during his vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday, January 24, Muntaka emphasised the importance of the bill and promised extensive consultations with stakeholders, including President John Dramani Mahama, experts, and Members of Parliament.

The Narcotics Control Commission Amendment Bill 2023 represents a progressive shift in Ghana’s approach to cannabis regulation.

By granting the Ministry of Interior the power to license the cultivation of cannabis, the bill aims to harness the plant’s potential for economic growth, industrial use, and medical research.

In his remarks, Muntaka underscored the significance of the legislation and its alignment with global trends.

“The board will be there and the President will be made aware of the law and I believe that once it is in tandem with his vision, you can be rest assured that I will lay it without delay.

“But obviously, I will have to listen to the experts and make a decision afterwards and I know my way around this House and I know how to get things done.”

Muntaka also highlighted the critical role of collaboration in the legislative process. He plans to engage with key stakeholders, including the Narcotics Control Commission, civil society organizations, healthcare professionals, and traditional authorities, to ensure that the bill is comprehensive and addresses all concerns.

Muntaka explains why he allowed his 6-year-old daughter to vote in the 2020 elections

Minister of Interior-designate Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka Minister of Interior-designate Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka

The Minister of Interior-designate and Member of Parliament for the Asawase Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has explained why he allowed his daughter to vote on his behalf in the 2020 general election.

The MP faced intense criticism in 2020 when videos of him taking his daughter to the voting booth to cast his ballot went viral.

Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday, January 24, 2025, Muntaka explained that his curious daughter only wanted to see how voting was done.

He said that he decided to take his daughter to the voting booth and teach her about the process without considering the legal implications of his actions.

“I’m very fond of Khadija. She insisted she wanted to be here (at the polling station) today (on election day). I told her no, she should go to school. I’m very fond of her – you have many children, but sometimes you’re very fond of one. She said, ‘Daddy, can I see how voting is done?’ So I told her, ‘Don’t worry, when we get there, I will show you.’

“So I brought her with me to vote. Yes, I must admit that voting is supposed to be secret… but knowing that seeing the process and even using her hand to do it didn’t really mean anything other than just giving her the experience of seeing how it’s done,” he said in response to a question by Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin on the incident.

Muntaka added that he later realised his actions were illegal and publicly apologised to the people of Ghana for his mistake.

Nothing wrong acquiring state lands legitimately

0

The Minister-Designate for Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has dismissed claims suggesting that it is morally wrong for public workers to legally acquire state lands, asserting that such acquisitions are legitimate if conducted properly.

His comments were made during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 24, amidst ongoing efforts by the government to reclaim illegally acquired state lands—a subject that has fueled intense public debate.

Muntaka disclosed that he had personally acquired government land in Accra through lawful means, emphasizing that public officials and private citizens alike have the right to acquire state lands legitimately.

“I know the whole of East Legon was for the state; we have private people living there. People who have worked in government before, and others. Airport Residential was all state land, and people acquired it legitimately and are living there. I don’t see anything wrong with it if it’s done legitimately and rightfully,” he explained.

On matters of security, Muntaka assured the committee of his commitment to confidentiality, emphasizing that sensitive information would remain strictly within authorized channels.

“I will never spill security matters to my wife or any other person. I can assure you no third person can ever know,” he pledged.

What Nana Yaa Jantuah said in 2023 and what she’s saying in 2025

0

Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah has called for a change in perception regarding issues surrounding asset declarations in the country.

Expressing her views on the need for government appointees to declare their assets, she said that individuals should stop automatically viewing government appointees as corrupt simply because they have assets.

Speaking on TV3 NewDay on January 23, 2025, Jantuah acknowledged the importance of government appointees and officials openly declaring their assets for transparency. However, she emphasised that owning properties does not necessarily indicate people have engaged in corrupt practices.

“When it comes to asset declaration, it is a good thing but we shouldn’t always think that because somebody has assets means the person was corrupt. The fact that people have assets doesn’t make them corrupt,” she said.

The former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), using herself as an example, detailed how some persons can build wealth by being frugal and responsible with their finances.

She explained that many appointees avoid extravagant lifestyles, opting to save the majority of their income, which may allow them to invest in properties while in office.

However, she added that appointees who enter government with one property but acquire additional properties by the time they leave office should be subjected to thorough questioning.

“… If someone has assets, it’s not always a sign of corruption. If a person enters government and declares they own one house, they should be questioned if, upon leaving, they own four. However, if someone comes into government with one house and later acquires another, it should raise questions, but it must also be considered in the context of them saving money, which could enable them to build a small house,” she added.

Her comments follow President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to his appointees to declare their assets.

He gave the directive at the swearing-in ceremony of the first six appointed ministers at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

“I expect all of you to begin the process of declaring your assets,” he said, adding that the Chief of Staff would soon announce a cut-off date by which all eligible appointees must submit their asset declaration forms to the Auditor-General.

Nana Yaa Jantuah’s stance on asset declaration appears to be shifting, especially considering her long-standing advocacy for public accountability and transparency in asset declaration.

What Nana Yaa Jantuah said in 2023

In her submission on TV3 in June 2023, Jantuah strongly advocated for asset declarations to be made a prerequisite for the vetting of ministerial nominees.

She went even further to suggest that ministerial nominees should only be approved by Parliament after they declare their assets.

“Assets declaration should be key. Before someone takes any public office, they should be made to declare their assets. For the ministers, it should be a prerequisite for vetting and passing through vetting successfully,” she proposed.

Jantuah added that family members and close relatives of these appointees should also be required to declare their assets upon exiting office.

“When they are exiting, there should be an exit asset declaration not only for themselves but the entire family and close relatives so everyone knows what they have financially.”

Obuasi Mine Clash: Adansi Concerned Citizens condemn violence, demand justice

0

A group calling itself the Concerned Citizens of Adansi has condemned the recent violent clash between the military and some illegal miners at an abandoned mine concession of Anglogold Ashanti (AGA) mine in Obuasi.

The tragic incident, which occurred on Saturday, January 18, 2025, resulted in the death of nine persons and severe injuries to eight others, throwing families and the mining town into mourning.

Families and other social groups have called for thorough investigations as assured by President Mahama following the tragic loss.

The Concerned Citizens of Adansi, a community-based advocacy group, is urging the Ghana Police Service to conduct a fair and transparent investigation to identify the perpetrators and ensure justice is served.

“The government needs to take immediate steps to restore peace and stability in Obuasi and its surrounding areas,” the group said in a statement.

In their demands, they want immediate government support for affected families, including compensation for their losses and care for the injured.

They also stress the need to uphold the human rights of all citizens, including small-scale miners, who should not be subjected to violence.

The group is demanding the implementation of alternative livelihood programs to provide sustainable employment for communities impacted by AngloGold Ashanti’s operations.

“The lack of employment opportunities for local youth has forced many to rely on small-scale mining for survival. Just as coastal communities depend on fishing, mining communities should have sustainable means of earning a living,” the statement further read.

The concerned citizens are also advocating for the creation of designated zones within mining communities where small-scale miners can operate legally and safely, ensuring a fair balance between large-scale mining activities and the livelihood needs of local residents.

They appealed to the government, political leaders, Asantehene, Otumfo Osei Tutu II, and other traditional authorities to collaborate in find lasting solutions to the challenges faced by the people of Adansi.

“Justice must not only be served for the victims of the recent violence but also for the long-suffering communities affected by AGA’s mining activities. Immediate action is necessary to address these grievances and ensure the well-being of the affected families and communities,” the statement concluded

I had no hand in Guru not winning an award at the 2013 VGMAs – Richie Mensah

0

CEO of Lynx Entertainment, Richie Mensah CEO of Lynx Entertainment, Richie Mensah

CEO of Lynx Entertainment, Richie Mensah, has refuted claims by Guru that he was involved in the latter not receiving an award at the 2013 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

In a discussion on Hitz FM on January 23, 2025, Richie Mensah clarified that he had no influence whatsoever on the rapper’s lack of recognition.

He explained that he only served as a board member for the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards for one year, resigning after signing an artist to his record label.

“I’ve been on the board before, and that particular year, Lynx didn’t release any artiste that was in 2013. In 2014, when we signed MzVee, I left the board. The issue started when the PRO at that time was supposed to have an interview but wasn’t around, so I was asked to speak on his behalf.

“That’s when people started tagging me as a board member. I don’t know why people want to spread this narrative. The first time I realised I had an issue with Guru was when I saw the interview. I never knew there was an issue. I also don’t have any issues with anyone,” he explained.

He added, “It’s painful. We work hard all year, and the industry talks about how hard my musicians work. My label consistently produces hit songs, yet when we get nominated, people say it’s because I’m on the board. But I ask myself, do they want to say those songs weren’t hits?”

Richie also expressed that he sometimes feels unfairly treated when artistes on his label aren’t duly awarded.

“The funny thing is, we also feel cheated by the board. Ask Robert Klah; I sometimes call him to ask why some of our songs didn’t win awards, and he tells me to send my concerns via email. But we never hear anything back. So, it’s very normal,” he added.

‘Even cats and dogs in our house, how much do we give them?’ – Muntaka bemoans GH¢1.80 feeding fee for prisoners

0

Minister of Interior-designate, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak Minister of Interior-designate, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak

The Minister of Interior-designate, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has expressed concerns about the poor conditions of the country’s prisons, particularly the low feeding allowances for inmates.

Speaking during his vetting in Parliament on Friday, January 24, 2025, he stressed the need to improve conditions in the prisons by learning from international models.

He pointed to Kenya as an example, where inmates contribute to the economy through factory work within the prisons.

“When you go to Kenya, every number plate that you see on a car is coming from the inmates because they give opportunity for industry to build these factories within the prison. It serves as a multi-purpose training of inmates which gives them skills and income. And obviously, because they are prisoners, the income or the payments that are made are not as if the factory was set up outside, this is an area that we need to look at”, he noted.

The Member of Parliament of Asawase also bemoaned the meagre feeding fee for prisoners which is currently pegged at GH¢1.80 pesewas.

He explained that the amount is insufficient to maintain proper health for inmates.

“Even cats and dogs in our houses, how much food do we give them? We feed our prisoners with one GH¢1.80 and expect them to remain healthy, free from communicable diseases, and reformed. No, we are putting them in an environment where they are more likely to come out more criminal than when they went in”, he stated.

The Ghana Prisons Service has emphasised the need for an increase in the feeding fee for prisoners to enable the provision of balanced and nutritious meals. However, the fee has yet to be reviewed.

Energy expert urges strategic response to US withdrawal from Paris Agreement

0

Africa Senior Programme Officer at Natural Resource Governance Institute, Denis Gyeyir Africa Senior Programme Officer at Natural Resource Governance Institute, Denis Gyeyir

While the United States (U.S.) withdrawal from the Paris Agreement deals a blow to global climate efforts, an energy expert has urged Ghana to craft strategies to benefit from potential openings while safeguarding against challenges.

Africa Senior Programme Officer at the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI), Denis Gyeyir, noted that the U.S. decision has several implications. One significant outcome is the potential for increased funding opportunities for hydrocarbon producers, as funding for climate action is expected to decline.

On the back of this, he said the government of Ghana needs to carefully plan and position the country to attract funding that will be available for hydrocarbon investments. This is given that the country has not attracted any new Petroleum Agreement (PA) since 2018, amid the decline in production over the past few years.

But this, he added, “requires some regulatory amendments to our laws, some incentives in terms of attracting investments and the use of fiscal tools, for instance, that encourage companies to invest in exploration.”

However, Mr. Gyeyir cautioned that “over-investing in hydrocarbons could prove risky if a future U.S. administration rejoins the Paris Agreement and withdraws funding”.

The Africa Senior Programme Officer at NRGI pointed out that hydrocarbon projects typically have long lead times, often exceeding 10 years. He cited, for instance, that some of the agreements Ghana signed sometime in 2012 and even in 2009 are yet to come into production.

Moreover, he also warned: “Over-focusing on attracting investment into the petroleum sector could also hinder progress in renewable energy”.

He contended that by the time a U.S. government shifts back to climate action, Ghana may have missed the opportunity to invest in renewable energy – which is the future.

Mr. Gyeyir was responding to a question during a press conference organised by the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) Alliance on key policy reforms – on illegal mining, anti-corruption, energy transition and climate action – and therefore called for a balanced approach.

He recommended that Ghana revamp its oil sector while simultaneously focusing on the energy industry’s future, including renewable energy and electric vehicles.

The CSOs, working in the extractive and environmental sectors, reaffirmed their commitment to partner with the government to achieve shared goals of development, sustainability, and good governance during the press conference.

“We believe that by working together, we can harness Ghana’s vast resources for the benefit of all while ensuring the protection of our environment and well-being of future generations.”

While acknowledging the 120-day timeline outlined by government to undertake some major initiatives, they noted that there are critical issues requiring immediate attention.

The CSOs Alliance noted that the addition of ‘Green Transitions’ to the Ministry of Energy’s mandate is commendable. However, they maintained that “energy transition must extend beyond one ministry to achieve national impact”.

Given this, they recommended establishing a high-level coordinating body – akin to Nigeria’s Energy Transition Implementation Working Group or South Africa’s Presidential Climate Commission – to drive efforts across sectors.

They also called for the development of an integrated energy transition strategy by reviewing and aligning the existing Energy Transition Framework and Investment Plan with manifesto commitments.

Furthermore, they advocated the acceleration of investments in renewable energy by creating a favourable regulatory and investment environment to enhance the renewable component of the country’s energy mix.

Meanwhile, they added that energy transition must be linked to green minerals through mapping resources, promoting research and ensuring value addition within the country.

“Ghana must leverage its natural resources and global energy transition goals to become a leader in sustainable energy,” the CSOs Alliance stated.

To realise government’s commitment to addressing climate change through reforestation policies and modern agricultural infrastructure, they urged an immediate implementation of the ‘Tree for Life’ and ‘Blue Water Initiative’.

They also called on government to ban new mining activities in forest reserves and adopt innovative farming methods to preserve natural ecosystems. “These measures are essential not only for climate mitigation but also economic resilience.”

Kamaldeen Sulemana, forward for Southampton Kamaldeen Sulemana, forward for Southampton

Southampton coach Ivan Jurić has shared an update on the fitness of Ghanaian winger Kamaldeen Sulemana, revealing that the player is dealing with a hamstring issue.

Sulemana’s time at Southampton has been hampered by injuries, but after nearly three months on the sidelines, he returned to action, showing flashes of his immense potential.

However, just as the 22-year-old seemed to find his rhythm, Jurić confirmed in a pre-match press conference ahead of the Saints’ game against Newcastle that Sulemana may have suffered another setback.

“He won’t play against Newcastle as he has a little injury. It’s a minor problem with his hamstring, but our medical staff are worried because of his previous issues. I think (hopefully) it’s nothing serious, and from Monday, he’ll start training with the team,” Jurić said.

Sulemana this season, has made 11 Premier League appearances but is yet to register a goal or assist. He has, however, found the net in the FA Cup, offering a glimpse of what he can bring to the team when fully fit.

Why Africa needs more than good intentions

0

A logo pictured in the Congress Center ahead of the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum A logo pictured in the Congress Center ahead of the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum

The annual World Economic Forum in Davos brings together the world’s most influential leaders with the stated aim of improving global economic conditions. This year, the promotion of inclusive and sustainable growth in Africa is once again a major conversation topic at the gathering. Yet when it comes to Africa’s development, we too often mistake discussion for progress.

The continent hosts some of the world’s fastest-growing economies, but average growth remains below global standards. This paradox demands more than analysis – it requires decisive action.

Africa’s potential is extraordinary. Home to 60 percent of the world’s uncultivated arable land, a young and dynamic population, and vast natural resources, the continent has all the ingredients for transformative growth. The question is not whether Africa can develop – it is how to remove the obstacles blocking its progress.

Today’s development landscape often resembles an elaborate maze of requirements, reports, and conflicting guidelines from hundreds of agencies. While accountability matters, excessive bureaucracy stifles progress. What Africa needs is practical, focused investment in fundamental areas that drive economic growth.

Take the energy challenge: only 50 percent of Africa’s 1.37 billion people have access to electricity. By 2030, investment in Africa’s energy sector needs to reach $25bn per year to close the energy access gap, a dramatic increase compared with today’s spending. But investment alone is not enough – we need to come up with practical, home-grown solutions. The key is regional integration of our energy sources – this is how we will resolve our energy crisis.

Africa has immense hydro, solar and other energy resources in different regions. If we devise the right energy mix and establish a pooled power supply, we can power the entire continent through a strong, resilient grid. Such an achievement would have an impact of history-making proportions on our continent’s development.

Similarly, it defies logic that a continent with most of the world’s arable land has over 280 million undernourished people. This is not due to a lack of capability. It is the result of neglected rural infrastructure, fragmented markets, and underinvestment in agricultural technology.

The solution requires strategic investment in roads, irrigation systems, and storage facilities, coupled with policies that encourage local processing and value addition.

Intra-African trade, at just 15 percent of the continent’s total trade, illustrates another major opportunity. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) offers promise, but its success depends on practical implementation – building roads, modernising ports, and eliminating trade barriers. These are not revolutionary concepts, but proven fundamentals of economic development.

The path forward is clear. First, we must streamline development processes. African nations need partners, not overseers. Second, infrastructure investment must be practical and immediate – roads, power plants, and ports that enable real economic activity, interconnectivity among nations, and consist within a continent-wide strategic vision. Third, we must trust local leadership to set priorities based on ground realities, not distant boardroom theories.

Our youth, whether in the Maghreb (Northwest Africa), Central Africa, or the Horn of Africa, deserve education systems that prepare them for the modern workplace. Current curricula often resemble antiquated assembly lines, failing to equip students with tools for their future. This must change. Similarly, our healthcare systems need targeted investment to reduce mortality rates and address stark health disparities across the continent.

Leaders in Davos should focus on tangible steps to accelerate Africa’s inclusive growth agenda. The continent does not need more seminars on development theory – it needs practical, results-focused support that enables nations to build robust economies and societies.

This is not just aspirational thinking. They are realistic goals backed by the continent’s immense potential.

The choice is clear: continue with business as usual, or embrace a model of development that prioritises results over process. The world’s response to this choice will determine not just Africa’s future, but the course of global prosperity for decades to come. The time for endless discussion is over – Africa needs action, and it needs it now.

Mahama only paid us eight days as January salary – Former MCE laments

0

The immediate past Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Abuakwa North in the Eastern Region, Alhaji Umar Bodinga, has expressed dissatisfaction with the new government’s decision to pay former Chief Executives of the Assemblies only eight days’ salary for January 2025.

Speaking on Koforidua-based Bryt FM on Friday, Alhaji Bodinga described the move as unfair, arguing that outgoing Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) are entitled to a full month’s salary and payment in lieu of notice upon termination of their service.

Govt sets one-month deadline for ECG privatisation roadmap

0

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has directed a newly inaugurated 7-member technical committee to consult extensively with stakeholders within the power distribution sector and develop a comprehensive plan for the privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) within one month.

The committee, composed of energy experts and key stakeholders, has been tasked with outlining strategies for transitioning ECG to private sector management, with a focus on improving efficiency and service delivery.

In a media interview after the inauguration, Mr. Jinapor clarified that the government is not selling the Electricity Company of Ghana as part of this process.

“Let me assure the nation that, we have not decided to sell ECG, ours is to ensure that we get the private sector involved and we also want to emphasize local participation.

“We want this to be done in a transparent, effective and responsible way. The committee is supposed to consult all stakeholders including the workers, staff, Unions, consumers and those who matter.

“We have told them to complete all these exercises within one month. We want a very competitive and transparent process so that we can turn the sector around. The energy sector is bleeding and if nothing is done in the shortest possible time, the sector will collapse,” he stated.

Former Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif’s home attacked amid rising insecurity

Opoku Ansah proposes permanent constituency offices to strengthen MP-community engagement

Member of Parliament (MP) for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku Member of Parliament (MP) for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku, has called for the establishment of permanent constituency offices to enhance MPs’ engagement with their constituents.

In an address to Parliament, Mr Opoku highlighted the challenges posed by the absence of structured platforms for regular interaction between MPs and the communities they represent.

“Constituency offices will serve as a central point for MPs to address the concerns of their constituents, communicate their achievements, and foster stronger relationships with the people they represent,” Mr. Opoku said.

He emphasised that such a move would lead to better service delivery and improved communication between lawmakers and the public.

The MP for Mpraeso also advocated for the revival of plans to construct permanent constituency offices across the country.

He suggested interim measures to address the immediate need, such as leasing private office spaces or utilising facilities within Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

Mr. Opoku further stressed the importance of ensuring that these offices are adequately equipped with the necessary logistical support and professional staff to facilitate smooth operations.

This, he argued, would improve the efficiency of MPs in responding to the needs of their communities.

By implementing permanent constituency offices, MPs would be able to focus more on their legislative responsibilities, reducing the unrealistic expectations placed on them to deliver development projects, which are often outside their mandate.

Mr. Opoku concluded that this initiative would be a vital step in improving parliamentary effectiveness and maintaining strong ties with constituents.

NDC supporters furious over lack of appointment for Kofi Annan

0

Some supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Effutu constituency have expressed their frustration over the party’s failure to secure an appointment for James Kofi Annan, the 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for the area.

President John Dramani Mahama has commenced appointing individuals to various positions in state institutions, but the Effutu supporters are displeased that their candidate has not been included in the list of appointees.

In a show of anger, some supporters stormed the NDC constituency office, chanting protest songs and vandalizing party property to register their displeasure.

The disgruntled supporters are demanding that President Mahama reward James Kofi Annan with an appointment, citing his dedication and hard work during the elections as justification for their call.

“We are begging the leadership of the party to do something. As women, we laid down our lives for the party to come into power. But if today the NDC is in power they must give James Kofi Annan an appointment.

“We beg our father Ato Forson to intervene in the matter. He must talk to John Mahama to do something about the situation. We want Vice President Professor Naana Opoku Agyemang to do something. The NPP people are laughing at us for not having a single appointment.

“We are in power but the NPP people are laughing at us and this is not fair,” Awo Sagoe an angry resident told Citi News.

“As a youth of Effutu constituency, we are angry with the way and manner our Parliamentary candidate has been treated. In 2016 our PC Eric Don Arthur contested but he wasn’t a match for Alex. In 2019 when James Kofi Annan emerged as the parliamentary candidate Alex Afenyo Markin started all the developmental projects.

“It means that he saw something good in him and needed to step up. He has done well in the constituency and he deserves an appointment. The Ministerial appointment is almost ended and the same as the CEO position.

“We want our PC to get an appointment but it seems the party leadership has neglected him. The NPP in the constituency has neglected us,” Ebenezer Frimpong Manso a party supporter said.

Boankra Inland Port model Boankra Inland Port model

The Chief Executive Officer of Justmoh Construction Limited, Dr. Justice Amo, has announced that phase one of the Boankra Inland Port project is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2025.

According to Dr. Amo, phase one includes key infrastructure such as a storage facility, a security zone, roads, and the terminal, which will be operational upon completion.

The project is being executed in two phases, with phase two scheduled for completion by 2026.

Dr. Amo who was speaking with journalists in Accra appealed to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, under the leadership of H.E. John Dramani Mahama, to support the project and expedite its completion.

He also expressed gratitude to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his tremendous efforts in supporting the development of the project and acknowledged the crucial role the Asantehene has played in ensuring its success.

Located in the Ashanti Region, the Boankra Inland Port project was initiated to serve importers and exporters in Ghana’s middle and northern regions.

Additionally, it aims to provide an efficient conduit for transporting transit goods to and from neighboring countries.

The project, which dates back to the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, has faced numerous challenges over the years, including delays following the exit of the NPP government in 2009.

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially launched the construction of the port on November 5, 2020.

The port’s completion is expected to boost Ghana’s role in the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) and enhance the country’s capacity to reap maximum benefits from the agreement.

Dr. J.B. Koranteng Yorke, Project Director for the Boankra Inland Port, emphasized the project’s importance in reducing traffic congestion and accidents on the Accra-Kumasi highway.

To address these concerns, the team has incorporated an interchange into the project design.

Ing. Jarra Siddique, Project Manager at Justmoh Construction Limited, revealed that phase one of the project is currently 78% complete. Work is ongoing on the terminal, as well as offices for the fire station, fuel station, government agencies, and other facilities.

As the project nears completion, residents of Boankra and neighboring communities have expressed joy over its progress. They noted that the construction phase has created job opportunities for unemployed youth and holds the promise of a brighter future for their communities.

The Boankra Inland Port is expected to play a pivotal role in improving Ghana’s trade logistics and ensuring economic growth through enhanced trade facilitation.

Why Africans abroad won’t tell you their reality – Seun Kuti

Seun Kuti is a nigerian singer and activist Seun Kuti is a nigerian singer and activist

Nigerian singer and activist, Seun Kuti, has slammed Africans living abroad over what he calls ‘an unwritten rule’ whereby they don’t discuss the realities of living abroad.

Speaking during a recent session, Seun claimed that many Africans who have relocated to pursue “greener pastures” often conceal the true challenges of their day-to-day lives from those back home.

“There is no single African who has Japa that can come and tell you that what I’m about to say is a lie. There is a silent, non-spoken, non-written agreement between every African who has travelled not to relay his true experience to his people.”

He explained that if Africans abroad were transparent about their realities abroad, many aspiring migrants might reconsider leaving their home countries.

“Every single African here who has left Africa for greener pastures, they have an unwritten code among themselves not to tell you the reality of their day to day experience.

“The Africans abroad create a blog to tell you their real experiences, nobody from Africa would go again. We would end up saying, ‘i would rather die.’ Even I that is successful and have everything I want, wherever I travel, I always miss Lagos.

“Meanwhile there are people who have been abroad for 25 years and won’t tell you the truth. They won’t tell you because they have agreed to abandon their cores.

“Even some people here have abandoned Africa in their minds; they just don’t have the opportunity to relocate. The singer’s comments sparked an online conversations about the realities of migration and the romanticised view of life abroad. While some agree with his observations, others argue that individual experiences vary and shouldn’t be generalised,” he explained.

‘Even our cats don’t feed on GH¢1.80’ – Muntaka vows to tackle poor feeding for prisoners

0

Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, the Minister-Designate for the Interior, has raised serious concerns about the deplorable state of Ghana’s prisons, particularly regarding the inadequate budget allocated for feeding inmates.

Speaking during his vetting before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee on Friday, January 24, Muntaka pledged to prioritise prison reform if his nomination is approved.

The Asawase Member of Parliament lamented the GH¢1.80 daily feeding budget per prisoner, describing it as grossly insufficient and inhumane.

He expressed disbelief over how such a meager amount could provide adequate nutrition for inmates, likening it unfavourably to the care extended to household pets.

The Minister-Designate expressed deep concern over the health implications of such poor nutrition, particularly in an environment where inmates are already vulnerable to contagious diseases due to overcrowding and unsanitary conditions.

He assured the Committee that improving the feeding budget would be a top priority under his leadership.

“I was shocked when I heard that the rationing for feeding a prisoner in Ghana is GH¢1.80 for the whole day and I doubt with the greatest of respect that even the cats and dogs in our houses, how much food do we give them that we will put our own compatriots because of one mistake or the other, in trying to corect them, we feed them with GH¢1.80 and expect them to be healthy.?”

“It is a very serious thing and I assure my colleagues that I will pay attention to it and address it.”

Muntaka also highlighted the broader challenges facing Ghana’s prison system, including severe overcrowding.

Many of the country’s prisons operate far beyond their intended capacity, creating an environment ripe for the spread of diseases such as tuberculosis, scabies, and other communicable illnesses.

The Ghana Prisons Service has repeatedly called for government intervention to address these issues, but progress has been slow.

President Mahama’s Cabinet: Regional Representation and Inclusivity Analysis

0

By Benard Worlali Awumee

Anloga, (V/R), Jan 24, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama is sticking to the commitment of constituting a lean but efficient government and ensuring swift appointments.

His promise, as outlined in his 120-day social contract document, included nominating the complete list of cabinet ministers within the first 14 days of taking office and constituting the leanest government under the Fourth Republic within 90 days.

“As I have said many times already, I will drastically reduce the size of government to reduce expenditure, by appointing not more than 60 ministers of state.

“Indeed, we started working on this by realigning and merging ministries, departments, and agencies. And we will appoint highly efficient, effective, and smart appointees to eliminate duplication and waste,” Mahama had reiterated during the Governance Forum on October 31, 2024.

In the quest to achieve this vision, President Mahama has, in three batches of announcements nominated 26 individuals for ministerial positions.

However, this raises questions from political actors including the minority leaders in Parliament questioning whether his administration could balance regional, ethnic, and social considerations while adhering to his outlined constraints.

The Regional Representation in Ministerial Nominations, excluding Regional Ministers were as follows: Mr Eric Opoku for Ahafo Region, the Ashanti Region had two representatives Mr Muntaka Mubarak and Gilbert Adjei, while Ahmed Ibrahim would represent the Bono Region.

The two representatives for the Bono East Region were Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare and Emmanuel Agyekum, with Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and Felix Kwakye Ofosu representing Central Region, while Dr Omane Boamah and George Opare Addo (Pablo) had been nominated for the Eastern Region.

Again, Mr Sam George would represent the Greater Accra Region to reflect the region’s critical role in national governance; North East Region: being represented by Issifu Seidu to underserved area, however promoting inclusivity; Northern Region: has three reps including Haruna Iddrisu, Murtala Mohammed, and Joseph Nikpe demonstrated the region’s strong political presence.

Oti Region: has Kofi Adams, signaling attention to this emerging region; Savannah Region: with

John Jinapor to ensure representation from this newly created region; Upper East Region: came with Dominic Ayine highlighting the focus on northern development and Upper West Region: Rashid Pelpuo emphasising equitable regional representation.

The NDC’s ‘world bank,’ the Volta Region: has three representatives, Dzifa Gomashie, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and Kwame Governs Agbodza underscoring the region’s strong NDC ties; and followed by the Western Region: with two nominees, Kofi Buah and Emelia Arthur reflecting the strategic importance of this resource-rich region; Western North Region: came with Kwabena Mintah Akandoh to complete the representations.

Every region received representation, demonstrating Mahama’s commitment to national unity.

Emerging regions such as Oti, Savannah, and Western North received strategic appointments, reflecting their growing prominence.

Volta Region and the Northern Region have received the highest nominations of three each

The blend of seasoned politicians and younger leaders aims to balance stability with innovation.

President Mahama’s nominations underscored his efforts to balance regional and national interests while delivering on his pledge.

On the sideline of gender inclusivity, including the regional minister, Mr John Mahama has nominated 42 ministers made up of 35 men representing more than 85 per cent, with only seven women representing about 15 per cent.

As the President is about to announce his deputy ministers to complete the promised 60 number, it is envisaged that there shall be more women nominations as well as youthful representations.

Meanwhile, some residents interviewed by the Ghana News Agency expressed diverse opinions on the issue of regional balance.

Some said it was a positive initiative by the President to prioritise the Volta Region, citing it as a stronghold of the political party.

However, others believed the President could do more to promote equity by appointing an equal number of nominees from each region.

Sit Down, Relax – Kwame Obeng Hits Back at Hecklers During First Parliamentary Speech

0

According to reports from GhanaWeb, outspoken Independent MP for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, commonly known as A Plus, commanded attention during his inaugural speech in Parliament since taking office on January 7, 2025.

When called upon by the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrews Asiamah Amoako, to contribute to a discussion on a report regarding ministerial nominees, A Plus made it clear that he had been instructed by the Majority Chief Whip to address a specific appointment.

Unfortunately, the report concerning that appointment was unavailable at the time.

This led to some interruptions from his fellow MPs, but A Plus responded assertively.

He stated that he had received conflicting information and sought clarification on the matter.

The Second Deputy Speaker attempted to summarize A Plus’s point, confirming that the report he was to comment on was not ready.

A Plus affirmed this, which resulted in further heckling from his colleagues.

Undeterred, A Plus addressed the disruptions directly, urging his peers to calm down and emphasizing that he was following the directives provided by the Chief Whip.

“Relax, relax, you are not… Mr. Speaker, I am dealing with my whip, and she gave me information, and that is what I am working on. Sit down, relax, relax, relax,” he stated.

After this exchange, the Second Deputy Speaker moved on to another MP for their input.

A Plus secured his position in the December 7, 2024, parliamentary elections by obtaining 14,277 votes out of a total of 36,026 valid ballots cast, defeating the incumbent NPP candidate, Naana Eyiah Quansah, who received 11,637 votes.

Don’t Act Like A Coup d’etat Govt – NDC Told

0

Richard Ahiagbah

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is acting as though it is not a constitutionally elected government but assumed power through a Coup d’etat.

The opposition made the remarks following NDC supporters’ continuous attacks on state institutions after taking office on December 7 despite calls from sections of the public and institutions to stop the unlawful practice.

Director of Communications for the NPP, Richard Ahiagbah, who said this at a press conference held at the party’s headquarters in Accra said President John Mahama and leaders of the NDC continuously failed to stop the thugs from attacking the institutions.

“The violence intensified. The NDC party was acting as though it was coup d’etat that brought them to power,” he stated.

“Notwithstanding the NPP’s goodwill and support for the NDC leadership and the President-elect at the time, they looked on while their members took the law into their hands to attack, terrorize Ghanaians. The NDC and its grassroots had ignored all calls to stop the violence,” he added.

He, therefore, called on President John Dramani Mahama and the leadership of the NDC to act swiftly to ensure these attacks by the party thugs do not continue.

“As President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized, we will not abuse our overwhelming majority,” Ayariga stated.

Bradez started tongue-twisting long before Sarkodie – Richie Mensah

0

Ghanaian music producer, Richie Mensah Ghanaian music producer, Richie Mensah

CEO of Lynx Entertainment, Richie Mensah, has stated that Bradez was the first to popularise tongue-twisting in Ghanaian rap music before Sarkodie even started.

Richie made these statements during an interview on ‘Daybreak Hitz’ on January 23, 2025.

“I heard people say Sarkodie’s tongue-twisting made the song popular, but this is not even an argument. Give Me Blow Remix came out before Sarkodie, so Bradez started twisting before we even heard of Sarkodie,” Richie said.

Richie also pointed out that the ‘tongue-twisting argument’ proves a larger issue of misinformation in the industry.

“All of this comes down to one of the problems we have, lack of information. I always say Google has settled many arguments. Back in the day, people would argue about certain things, but now you can just Google and find your answer,” he added.

Bradez, a popular rap duo that emerged in the early 2000s, consists of Kunta Kinte and Flowking Stone.

Known for blending Ghanaian music with hip-hop and rap, the group was a major influence on the music scene.

The Oti Regional Minister-designate, John Kwadwo Gyapong, defended his appointment when questioned about his retirement plans during his vetting process by the Appointments Committee.

The 74-year-old political stalwart, who has held various influential roles in the National Democratic Congress, provided a witty response to a question posed by one of the committee members during his vetting on January 23, 2025.

Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, sought to assess the level of productivity the 74-year-old Gyapong could offer if given the mandate, considering his age.

He asked why Gyapong had not considered retiring and passing on the baton to a younger and more energetic individual.

“At 74 years old and a father of ten, three-term Member of Parliament, NDC regional chairman for Oti and Volta, constituency chairman, don’t you think it’s time to hand over to any of your children?” he asked seemingly concerned.

His question, which drew surprised looks from the members of the room, was met with a hearty response from Gyapong, drawing laughter from both the committee members and guests present.

Unfazed by the question, Gyapong maintained a confident posture and rhetorically asked the committee member why his age should hinder him from effectively executing his duties, emphasising that age should not be a barrier to fulfilling his mandate.

According to Gyapong, his age should not prevent him from effectively delivering on his responsibilities, especially when the country entrusted the presidential mandate to a septuagenarian.

He said, “I am happy for this question because if even an 83-year-old person can be a president of this country, I wonder why a 74-year-old person can’t,” he said drawing laughter from the room.

Gyapong highlighted his extensive expertise, emphasising his commitment and dedication to fostering youth capacity building.

“There is something you didn’t say in my CV, I am a founding member of this political party [NDC] and my passion is to see that this party always wins the election. Once I have the strength to help, cooperate, advise, and build the capacity of the youth who are party members, so be it,” he responded.

Ho (V/R), Jan. 24, GNA – Ms Charity Boko, an aspiring District Chief Executive (DCE) for Central Tongu in the Volta Region, has pledged to ensure that women in the district fully benefit from the Women Development Bank promised by the President.

Speaking after her vetting on the third day of the ongoing Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive’s (MMDCEs) vetting in Ho, at the Volta Regional capital, Ms Boko said she would advocate for women to receive their due benefits from the initiative.

NDC Hooligans Chase Mahama Appointed GRA Boss

0

Heavily built men belonging to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) early today invaded the offices of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), harassing staff of the Authority and threatening to lock up the offices of the revenue agency.

The actions of the thugs were in response to the appointment of Anthony Kwasi Sarpong as the Ac ting Commissioner-General of the Authority.

Before invading the offices, the NDC goons issued a statement describing the appointment by President John Dramani Mahama as disappointing and called for its immediate withdrawal.

They accused the President of excluding deserving loyalists of the NDC in favour of individuals with ties to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), threatening to physically prevent him from assuming his role as the GRA Acting Commissioner-General.

The lawless NDC thugs, currently on the rampage across the country, alleged that Mr Sarpong was appointed to the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG), by former President Nana Akufo-Addo in September 2020 and should not have been appointed by the NDC government.

The invasion of the offices of the GRA and threats to prevent its new Commissioner-General from assuming office follows a series of lawless activities by thugs and supporters of the NDC since the party won the December 2024 general election.

Shortly after the declaration of the December 7 general elections, rampaging NDC youth attacked state institutions, locked up public offices, and forcefully evicted public and civil servants from their homes and offices.

The situation worsened after the inauguration of President Mahama as President on 7th January.
The party thugs have, in recent times, turned their attention to party members and offices following appointments to key positions by President Mahama.

Earlier this week, the failure of President John Dramani Mahama to fulfil his promises to supporters of the party sparked unrest in his hometown, Bole. Supporters of the NDC demonstrated against Mr Mahama’s decision not to nominate Alhaji Yusif Sulemana, Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi, for a ministerial appointment. They destroyed properties in the area, burnt car tyres in front of the house of Mr Mahama’s father, and threatened to burn the local NDC office.

This happened a few days after eight NDC thugs were shot dead, and several others were injured during an attempt to take over the operations of AngloGold Ashanti, a gold mining company in Obuasi.

On Tuesday, disgruntled supporters of the NDC set fire to the Ho Central constituency office in what was said to be a protest over the President’s failure to appoint anyone from the constituency to a ministerial position.

The perpetrators broke into the office, threw out furniture, office equipment, documents, and other items, and set them ablaze using vehicle tyres in the forecourt of the office.

Energy Minister inspects 2,500 uncleared ECG containers at Tema Port

0

The Minister of Energy, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, has conducted an inspection tour of the Tema Harbour to evaluate the status of approximately 2,500 containers procured by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) but left uncleared at the port.

This visit underscores the Minister’s dedication to addressing inefficiencies within the energy sector and promoting the prudent use of national resources.

The uncleared containers, containing critical materials purchased under the previous administration, have accumulated demurrage charges amounting to an alarming GHS 1.5 billion.

The situation reveals significant lapses in resource management and inter-agency coordination, resulting in a severe financial burden on the nation.

Hon. Jinapor expressed deep concern about the matter, describing it as unacceptable and pledging the Ministry’s commitment to improving operational efficiency and accountability.

He stressed the importance of taking immediate action to clear the containers, which would mitigate further financial losses and facilitate the execution of key energy initiatives for the benefit of Ghanaians.

The Minister assured the public that steps will be taken to prevent such occurrences in the future, emphasising the need for efficient management of public resources to advance the country’s developmental objectives.

‘Even cats and dogs in our house, how much do we give them?’ – Muntanka bemoans GH¢1.80 feeding fee for prisoners

Minister of Interior-designate, Mohammed Muntanka Mubarak Minister of Interior-designate, Mohammed Muntanka Mubarak

The Minister of Interior-designate, Mohammed Muntanka Mubarak, has expressed concerns about the poor conditions of the country’s prisons, particularly the low feeding allowances for inmates.

And obviously because they are prisoners, the income or the payments that are made are not as if the factory was set up outside, this is an area that we need to look at”, he noted.

Police refusal to use firearms prevented election violence – Muntaka Mubarak

0

Interior Minister-designate Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has commended the Ghana Police Service for their handling of the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

According to him, the strategic refusal of the Police to use firearms during the polls helped to defuse tensions at the polling centres despite the instances of provocation.

Answering questions before the Appointments Committee in Parliament on Friday, January 24, the Asawase lawmaker said he will support efforts of the Police in prosecuting individuals found to have committed crimes during the polls.

“I like how the police handled the elections, they refused to use firearms despite the provocation. Instead they took videos of those misconducting themselves and are now prosecuting them and if given the nod I will support them in those prosecutions.

“The decision of the police to refuse to use firearms is the reason no deaths has come from the police from the elections so far. Some of shootings came from the army and that is on record but none from the Police and that’s why I will support them in prosecuting any wrong doer”.

The Minister-designate also praised the conduct of the National election security task force for their performance during the polls.

AI in Journalism: Expert urges Journalists to be vanguards of AI

0

By James Amoh Junior, GNA

Accra, Jan. 24, GNA – Journalists must position themselves at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption to remain relevant in the fast-evolving media landscape, Mr Celestine Achi, Chief AI and Information Management Office, Cihan Media Group, has urged.

Mr Achi underscored the growing role of AI in contemporary journalism and called on journalists to embrace AI tools not just as aids but as catalysts for innovation and accuracy in news production.

Speaking at a three-day AI training for journalists in Accra, the AI expert stressed that, “AI is no longer the future; it is the present. Journalists must understand its transformative power and use it to enhance their work, from automated fact-checking and transcription to data analysis and audience engagement.”

The comprehensive three-day training programme was designed to equip journalists and editors with cutting-edge AI tools and knowledge for modern media operations.

Organized by the U.S. Agency for Global Media, an independent U.S. Government funded agency and the Voice of America, the training was recognized and accredited by the Institute of Information Management Africa.

The 25 participants, drawn from the Central, Western and Greater Accra Regions, underwent several models including, Fundamentals of AI and machine learning, Applications across converged media (Print, Online, Broadcast), Ethics and responsible AI use in Journalism, Prompt Engineering and Guided Practice, and AI in News Gathering and Reporting.

Mr Achi, also renowned expert in Digital Communications and AI, said “the world of communications isn’t about tomorrow, it’s about right now. And right now, AI has fundamentally

changed the game for the media industry. From crafting the perfect message to reaching audiences across the globe.”

“AI tools are no longer an option, they’re essential,” he emphasized.

The future of AI, he said, was Generative AI, which was rapidly evolving, promising to revolutionize various industries.

According to him, while traditional AI remained crucial for many tasks, the combination of both approaches would unlock even greater potential for diversely talented AI Prompt Engineers rigged with futuristic AI skills worldwide.

He explained that unlike Generative AI, Prescriptive AI went a step further by suggesting the best possible course of action.

A key difference, Mr Achi added, was that while predictive AI forecasted the future based on past (or current, real-time) data, prescriptive AI the future could be shaped according to specific requirements.

He urged journalists to have a mastery of English Language with an ability to craft perfect scenarios for prompts, effectively use AI in newsroom workflow for gathering, production, and dissemination of news.

The expert further encouraged media organizations to invest in AI training for their staff to ensure they were equipped to use emerging technologies effectively.

“Journalists who fail to embrace AI risk being left behind, while those who adapt will lead the next wave of media innovation,” he stated.

Paula Caffey, Co-Regional Marketing Manager, West & Central Africa, Washington DC, reiterated that “AI is not going away, and I know that a lot of media organization are very careful about AI use.”

That, she said, necessitated the training of journalists in AI organized by the USAGM – the parent agency of the VOA – to ensure that it was incorporated in newsroom workflow for efficiency in production with all the policy and ethical considerations.

Mathew Asada, Press Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, highlighting a range of training opportunities designed to empower journalists with the skills needed to thrive in the evolving media landscape.

Mr. Asada urged Ghanaian media practitioners to take advantage of such initiatives to remain competitive globally.

Mr Michael Asharley, a participant and journalist from Multimedia Group, who expressed enthusiasm about the possibilities AI in quality journalism said, he could significantly reduce the time spent on repetitive tasks like transcribing interviews, allowing him to focus on more in-depth reporting.

“The training was an eye-opener — it showed how AI can cut out mundane, repetitive tasks and open doors to more creative, impactful storytelling. The practical sessions brought these ideas to life in ways that felt exciting and doable,” he said.

Why some artistes don’t deserve to perform at TGMAs – Article Wan details

Ghanaian musician Article Wan Ghanaian musician Article Wan

Ghanaian musician Article Wan has expressed disappointment with the organisers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) for selecting certain type artistes to perform at the event.

In an interview with Abieku Santana on January 23, 2025, Article Wan said some of the artistes scheduled to perform at the ceremony do not deserve such a platform due to what he described as their poor stagecraft.

“Some of the artistes asked to perform at TGMA have poor stagecraft. Sometimes you see an artiste performing, and everyone is just sitting there, yet the camera captures it and broadcasts it to the world,” he lamented

According to him, the criteria for selecting artistes for performances at the event is often based on favoritism rather than merit.

“The selection of artistes to perform isn’t great. I think favoritism in Ghana is becoming too much,” he said.

Article Wan also singled out musician Eduwoji, claiming he falls into the category of artistes with poor stage performance.

“Eduwoji is a good musician, but he doesn’t have a good stage performance. Charterhouse is a big company, and they invest a lot of money to organise TGMA for the whole world to see Ghana. So, they can’t organise TGMA’s without a performance from me,” he added.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in November 2023 launched the $10 million ‘Heal Komfo Anokye’ project.

The initiative was aimed at raising funds to renovate and modernise the main blocks of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), whose state then was described as terrible and embarrassing by the King.

A video of the works done so far shared by a pro-Manhyia X handle, on January 24, 2025, shows a transformed Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, a little over a year since the renovations started.

The video showed rooms and corridors of one of the blocks completely transformed. New hospital beds and other furniture were being fixed. The roof of one of the blocks, which was falling off, has also been fixed, as well as the washrooms of the hospital. One of the main wards of the hospital could be seen completely transformed, with its leaking roofs and cracked walls completely fixed.

Otumfuo, during the launch of the project, said that the legendary Okomfo Anokye, after whom the hospital was named, would never have allowed something named after him to be this sick.

“The leaking roofs, exposure of electrical cables, cracked walls, are shameful. Let’s all put aside party politics and join hands to fix this embarrassing situation. Collectively, we can raise the $10 million and give a facelift to this hospital,” he pointed out.

The former MCE called on the government to address the matter, emphasizing the need to respect the terms and conditions under which the MMDCEs served.

“They only paid us 8 days as January salary. But by our letter of appointment, if your appointment is terminated or revoked you are given three months in lieu. Hunger is painful. Those who were occupying government bungalows have vacated so how can they get a place to stay? There are some things that when you do brings shame to the governance system”, Alhaji Umar Bodinga lamented.

President John Mahama on January 8, 2025, terminated the appointments of Chief Executives for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

In a letter signed by the Executive Secretary to the President, Calistus Mahama explained that the move is in accordance with the powers vested in President Mahama under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) as amended by the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940), the following appointments are revoked, effective immediately:

Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies and assembly Members are appointed under the relevant provisions of the Act.
