Parliament approves allocation of oil revenues, mineral royalties to ‘Big Push Agenda’

0

Parliament has approved the government’s request to dedicate all oil revenues and mineral royalties to the implementation of the Big Push Programme, estimated at 13.8 billion Ghana Cedis.

The programme, which is scheduled for completion by 2028 through domestic financing, is aimed at improving road infrastructure across the country.

The approval follows a request by the government for multi-year commitments to support the construction of selected road projects under the initiative.

Part of the joint committee on budget and finance report reads, “The Committee has carefully considered the Referral and it is of the opinion that the request is in the right direction.

“The Committee also noted that Parliament had already approved the policy and the allocation to the “Big Push” Programme in the 2025 Budget Statement. Granting the request would enable the Government to enter into multi-year contracts to execute the road infrastructure projects under the Programme.

“The Committee accordingly recommends to the House to approve the Request for the multi-year commitments for the selected road projects under the “Big Push” Programme contained in the Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review of the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the Government of Ghana, in accordance with Section 33 of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016, (Act 921).”

Christian Council of Ghana urges rival factions in Bawku conflict to embrace dialogue

0

By Jibril Abdul Mumuni

Accra, July 30, GNA- The Christian Council of Ghana has urged rival factions in the Bawku conflict to embrace dialogue, uphold the sanctity of human life, as they resolve their differences peacefully.

In a press statement copied to the Ghana News Agency and signed by Reverend Dr. Cyril Fayose, General Secretary of the Council, the Council noted its particular concern regarding the devastating impact of the conflict on churches and mission establishments in Bawku.

The Council highlighted that Bawku is home to numerous Christian congregations and mission facilities, many of which have suffered damages and the suspension of their activities.

These institutions, according to the Council, have long contributed to peacebuilding and social development in the region, and their safety and continuity are essential for the well-being of all residents.

The statement further called on local opinion leaders, religious groups, civil society organisations, women’s groups, and youth groups, all of whom play crucial roles in mediation and reconciliation, to intensify their efforts towards lasting peace.

The Council urged the security agencies stationed in Bawku to carry out their duties with utmost professionalism, impartiality, and restraint.

“Security personnel must avoid any actions that may inflame tensions or alienate the local population. The foremost responsibility is to protect the citizens, including vulnerable groups and places of worship, without discrimination or intimidation,” the Council stated.

Declaring its solidarity with all peacebuilding stakeholders, the Council called for a non-violent resolution to the conflict.

It also urged the government to implement inclusive and sustainable peace initiatives that meaningfully engage all relevant parties.

Additionally, the Council called on pastors and church members across the nation to commit to fervent prayer for peace, healing, and divine guidance for all those working towards reconciliation in Bawku.

The Council noted that continued instability in Bawku did not only endangered lives but also undermined social cohesion and development in the Upper East Region and beyond.

“Restoring peace is a shared responsibility, one that requires the collective effort of traditional leaders, ethnic communities, religious institutions, security agencies, and government authorities,” the statement said.

NPP’s 2028 comeback depends on Bawumia

0

Former Deputy CEO of the Youth Employment Agency, Alhaji Ibrahim Bashiru, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rally behind former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s best bet of regaining power in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News, Alhaji Bashiru described Dr. Bawumia as a humble, competent, and emotionally intelligent leader whose track record in both political and public service positions him as the ideal candidate for the presidency.

He emphasised that among all potential contenders, Dr. Bawumia stands out as the most prepared and visionary figure to lead the party into the future.

“If the NPP really wants power in 2028, we don’t have to look left or right. We have to look straight and see the face of a very humble man. Somebody who has demonstrated beyond a reasonable doubt both in political life and in public life that he is a very oriented person and that he is somebody who has a consistent emotional intelligence; very calm, has innovative ideas and is very well prepared for the presidency. I do not see that in anybody’s face. I see that in the face of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” he stated.

According to him, Dr. Bawumia is the only candidate who will be accepted by voters even outside the party.

German Development Cooperation, partners launch ProfArts Mobile App for local artisans

0

By Edward Dankwah

Accra, July 30, GNA – The German Development Cooperation, in collaboration with the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhlE), Robert Bosch Ghana and Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited, has officially launched the Professionalisation of Artisans (ProfArts) mobile application in Accra.

The mobile application is designed to expand employment opportunities for local artisans working in Ghana’s building and construction industry by connecting them directly with customers in a secure and practical way.

The ProfArts mobile application offers a range of features including secure profiles for artisans and clients, a search function by location and type of service, and real-time messaging for service discussions.

The mobile application also has booking tools with calendar synchronisation, integrated payment options, and a rating system for both artisans and customers to strengthen trust, transparency and service quality across the sector.

Ms. Chantel Kristin Lahmer, on behalf of the German Ambassador to Ghana, said the ProfArts project was initiated five years ago under the Special Initiative Decent Work for a Just Transition, operating under the Invest for Jobs brand, an initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

She said the project was implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in close cooperation with GhIE, Robert Bosch Ghana, Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited, UVEX Safety Germany and other supporting partners.

Ms. Lahmer said the ProfArts application builds on existing achievements by helping artisans secure fairer working conditions, expand their customer base and deliver professional services that meet industry standards.

She said their commitment to harnessing digital tools to strengthen local economies, create employment opportunities, and promote inclusive and sustainable development across Ghana remained strong.

Mr. George Opare Addo, the Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, said the Government sees a lot of potential in the construction sector, and welcomed every single effort and initiative to ensure the opportunities within the industry were properly explored.

He said it was for this reason that the Ministry supported the ProfArts project as a contribution towards promoting the formalisation of the informal sector, and welcomed the introduction of the ProfArts mobile application to specifically serve the construction sector.

“The initiative promises to increase the attractiveness of the sector to the youth, by helping them not only gain employment but to do that in a dignified way,” he stressed.

He said the ProfArts project and mobile application was poised to revolutionise Ghana’s construction industry by demystifying the erroneous notion that construction work lacked professional dignity while unlocking new avenues for the many skilled youth within the industry.

Mr. Opare Addo said the ProfArts application came at a time when the National Apprenticeship programme had been introduced to train and equip young people with hands-on skills across several industries, which included the construction sector.

He encouraged both artisans and consumers to capitalise this revolutionary initiative, urging the artisans to get onto the App for more opportunities and reach.

Consumers, he said, should utilise the App for safe, quality service and promote the professionalisation and decent jobs for all agenda.

Mr. Samuel Magnus Asiedu, the Executive Director of GhIE, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to improving skills, trust and market access for artisans.

He acknowledged the role of the ProfArts project in onboarding craftsmen onto the GhIE register, in line with legal requirements and welcomed the next phase of collaboration with GIZ,

which would focus on further capacity building, licensing and onboarding new artisans onto the mobile application.

GAF begins probe into assault on Joy News journalist

0

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has launched an investigation into the conduct of some of its personnel following an incident involving a Joy News reporter and an eyewitness near a demolition site along the Spintex Road in Accra.

According to a press release issued by the Department of Public Relations at GAF Headquarters, the probe follows a directive from the Presidency and aims to determine the facts surrounding what it describes as “inappropriate conduct” by soldiers during an encounter with journalists on Tuesday, July 30.

“In line with the directive from the Presidency, the Ghana Armed Forces wishes to inform the general public that investigations have begun into the inappropriate conduct of some soldiers during an encounter with some journalists,” the statement read.

Signed by Captain VA Arhin (Ghana Navy), Acting Director General of Public Relations, the release assured the public that the investigation would be thorough and that “those found culpable will be dealt with accordingly.”

Journalist Detained, Eyewitness Assaulted

The development follows reports that Joy News journalist Carlos Calony was detained by National Security operatives while covering the aftermath of the demolition of a warehouse under construction. Eyewitnesses also allege that a civilian who attempted to film the arrest was assaulted by a soldier.

The circumstances of Calony’s arrest remain unclear, but the incident has drawn sharp criticism from press freedom advocates and civil society organizations.

Government Condemns Actions, Orders Accountability

In a separate statement, the government described the actions of the soldier and security personnel as “utterly unacceptable.” Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who also serves as spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama, expressed the administration’s deep concern over the incident.

“I am directed by President John Dramani Mahama to unequivocally reaffirm his unwavering commitment to the freedom and safety of journalists,” the statement said. “A free and unfettered press is a cornerstone of our democracy, essential for accountability, transparency, and informed public discourse.”

The President has directed both the Minister for Defence and the National Security Coordinator to conduct a full investigation and apply disciplinary and punitive measures without delay.

Minority accuses Roads Minister of distorting data on roads constructed

0

By Godwill Arthur-Mensah/Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, July 30, GNA – Mr. Francis Asenso-Boakye, a former Minister of Roads and Highways, has criticised the ruling government of attempting to distort facts and data on roads constructed by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) Administration.

He said the NPP government constructed over 13,000 kilometres of roads comprising overlays, new and partial roads, as well as gravelling and regravelling and rehabilitation works, and not 10,000km as claimed by Mr Kwame Agbodza, the Minister of Roads and Highways.

GJA demands arrest, interdiction of officers in JoyNews Journalist assault

0

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has called on the government to immediately arrest and interdict the National Security operatives involved in the recent assault and detention of JoyNews journalist, Carlos Carlony.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Wednesday, July 30, he welcomed the government’s statement condemning the act but described it as inadequate, insisting that mere condemnation without swift action is not enough.

“We expect the government, even though we welcome their condemnation, to immediately interdict and arrest the security officers involved and begin investigations. If, after investigations, they are not guilty, then they can be released. But what is the meaning of just issuing a directive for investigations while we sit back and watch?” he queried.

Mr. Dwumfour further indicated that the GJA would be addressing the media and the public on Thursday, July 31, to officially state its position on what he called the rising and alarming rate of attacks on journalists in Ghana.

The demand follows disturbing revelations by JoyNews reporter Carlos Carlony, who recounted being assaulted and forcefully detained by National Security operatives. The incident occurred while he was covering a demolition exercise at a warehouse reportedly owned by prominent businessman Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan.

According to Carlony, the soldiers initially questioned why he and his team were filming the exercise. Despite informing them that they were journalists reporting on the event, one of the officers allegedly assaulted him from behind just as he was preparing to go on air.

He was then bundled into a vehicle along with McDan and three others and transported to the National Security Headquarters.

In response to public outrage, the government issued a statement condemning the assault. Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, described the actions of the soldier involved as “utterly unacceptable.”

However, the GJA maintains that the government’s response has fallen short of expectations and insists on concrete steps to hold the officers accountable. The association says failure to take decisive action could embolden further attacks and undermine press freedom.

‘Don’t sacrifice quality for quantity in legal education’ – Former Deputy AG warns

Joseph Kpemka is a former Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice Joseph Kpemka is a former Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice

Former Deputy Attorney General Joseph Kpemka has cautioned against a hasty expansion of legal education in Ghana, warning that it could result in the production of “legal charlatans” who may undermine the credibility and progress of the legal profession.

Speaking on ChannelOne TV’s “Point of View” show on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Kpemka stressed the need for a careful and balanced approach to the proposed reforms currently under consideration.

According to him, while expansion is necessary, it must not come at the cost of quality.

“I’ve had quite a number of interactions with very prominent people and very senior lawyers on this topic. It’s a delicate balance. We must not completely write off the current approach, nor should we embrace the new proposal without caution,” he noted.

The former Deputy AG, who previously served on the General Legal Council, revealed that some law faculties in the country fall short of the required standards to even run LLB programmes.

He cited poor infrastructure, unqualified staff, and a profit-driven motive as challenges plaguing some institutions.

“If care is not taken, we will destroy the very foundation of legal education,” he warned.

“Some faculties are driven purely by money. If we open up and allow every LLB faculty to run professional law courses, we may regret this move in a few years,” he added.

Kpemka advocated for strict caveats and quality benchmarks for any institution that wishes to offer professional law courses, urging policymakers to “hasten slowly” and preserve the integrity of Ghana’s legal system.

Road minister questions Akufo-Addo’s 10,000km road claim

Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has cast doubt on former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s claim that his administration constructed over 10,000 kilometres of roads during its tenure.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series held at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, Agbodza said his nationwide tour of road infrastructure since assuming office revealed a significant discrepancy between the previous government’s claims and the current state of the roads.

“As soon as I assumed office, I went around the country to see the roads in Ghana. What I saw was that the over 10,000km of roads former President Akufo-Addo claimed he had constructed cannot be found. In fact, not even a 1,000 kilometres of good road was seen,” he stated.

The minister said his team was unable to locate or verify even a fraction of the reported road network attributed to the former administration, raising questions about the accuracy of infrastructure reporting under the previous government.

Agbodza assured Ghanaians that his ministry is committed to transparency, quality delivery, and the use of verifiable data in tracking progress on road construction across the country.

OSP invites Adom-Otchere over GACL contract; He alleges ‘witch hunt’

0

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has invited the former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Paul Adom-Otchere, for questioning in connection with an ongoing investigation into a revenue assurance audit contract.

In an official letter dated July 25, 2025, the OSP named Mr. Adom-Otchere as a suspect in its probe into alleged corruption and corruption-related offences arising from a contract between GACL and a private firm.

Confirming the development in an interview with Citi Newsroom, Mr. Adom-Otchere acknowledged receiving the summons and stated he was scheduled to meet investigators at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 31.

However, he described the invitation as a “witch-hunt”, insisting he had no direct involvement in the signing of the contract under investigation.

According to him, the contract in question was signed by the Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company, and was not even aware that the contract had been executed.

Mr. Adom-Otchere further questioned why the probe appears to be targeting him when, according to him, the relevant management officials—including the GACL Managing Director—are available and were directly involved in the operational decision.

Ghana’s poor competitiveness hurting Agricultural exports – 2018 National Best Farmer

0

Ghana’s limited presence in international agricultural export markets is largely due to a lack of competitiveness, according to James Boateng, the 2018 National Best Farmer.

Speaking at the Conversations Under The Baobab Tree (Ɔdadeɛ National Dialogue) in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, Mr. Boateng said the country continues to struggle with meeting global quality and production standards, which hampers its ability to compete internationally.

“One of the reasons we are doing so little in exports is that we are not competitive,” Boateng stated, adding, “Because the export business deals with quality and standards. So we are not there.”

The dialogue, themed “Towards a Holistic Approach to Agriculture in Ghana,” brought together stakeholders to examine ways to strengthen the country’s agricultural sector.

He also called for a coordinated and context-sensitive approach to agricultural development in the country, warning that fragmented efforts and poor execution are holding back progress in the sector.

Three senior officials of McDan Group reportedly picked up by National Security

National Security operatives have reportedly taken three senior officials of the McDan Group into custody.

This follows a demolition exercise carried out on a warehouse property belonging to the McDan Group, which was under construction along the Spintex Road, according to a citinewsroom.com report.

The senior officials were reportedly rounded up by the operatives after the demolition, with the site designated a “National Security Zone” by personnel stationed there.

Currently, both parties — the National Security and McDan — have yet to officially release a statement on the development.

On Wednesday, July 30, 2025, individuals believed to be operatives of the National Security reportedly arrested a journalist of the Multimedia Group who was reporting from the site where the demolition took place.

According to a news report by JoyNews, the armed security officers stormed the area when the said journalist, Carlos Calony, got to the demolition site.

The report indicated that the reporter was taken to National Security’s Blue Gate in Accra, and nothing has been heard from him yet.

The report captured the commotion when the security officials got to the site, in which the officials could be heard arguing with the reporter about whether he could report from the site.

Moments after the journalist started interviewing a civilian believed to be an eyewitness, one of the security officials, who was in military uniform, started whipping the witness.

More of the security officials, who were all in military uniforms, then pounced on the civilian and started hitting him.

The officials then ordered the journalist and his videographer to stop filming the incident, but the journalist could be heard insisting that they could not be stopped from doing their work.

The journalist is also heard asking the supposed security operatives to take him to their boss.

I’m under no pressure to restore licences of collapsed Banks – BoG Governor

0

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, has stated that he is under no pressure to unilaterally reinstate the licences of banks that were revoked during Ghana’s banking sector cleanup.

Speaking at the 125th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press conference in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, Dr. Asiama responded to a question from Citi Business News’ Nerteley Nettey Adjaho, clarifying that any such decision would have to follow due legal and institutional procedures.

“Not at all,” Dr. Asiama said when asked whether he felt pressured to restore the licences. He further explained that the reinstatement of any bank’s licence cannot be a unilateral decision by the Governor but would require a court directive and the involvement of the Bank’s board.

“Remember, the resolution framework is working. I came into office to find that a lot of progress had been made. Some cases are in court, some cases are undergoing certain forms of settlement, and so the process is on, and we will follow up on the process in that regard,” he added.

He further clarified the procedure for any potential reinstatement:

“With the issue of what to do, it depends. For example, if a court reaches a decision and instructs us to go in a particular way, the board of the Bank of Ghana will look at that. But from where I sit, there is no pressure on me to restore any such unilaterally.”

The question followed a campaign promise made by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2024 general election period.

While delivering his acceptance speech at the University of Development Studies on May 15, 2024, after securing the NDC’s presidential nomination, Mr. Mahama declared:

“We shall promote robust, local participation in our banking and financial, telecommunication, tourism, mining and agric and manufacturing sectors to grow our economy and create sustainable employment for our youths.”

The banking sector cleanup, initiated in 2017, saw the central bank raise the minimum paid-up capital requirement from GHS120 million to GHS400 million; a move that led to the collapse or consolidation of institutions that failed to meet the new threshold.

In total, nine local banks, 23 savings and loans companies, 347 microfinance institutions, 39 finance houses and 53 fund management firms lost their licenses.

Collapsed banks included: UniBank, The Sovereign Bank, The Beige Bank, Premium Bank, The Royal Bank, Heritage Bank, Construction Bank, UT Bank and Capital Bank.

While the BoG defended the move as necessary to strengthen the financial sector, critics argued that several of the affected banks could have been salvaged to preserve jobs and local ownership.

UNDP, CDD-Ghana project fostering social cohesion, strengthening local governance

By Anthony Adongo Apubeo

Bongo (U/E), July 30, GNA – A peacebuilding and governance initiative is yielding positive results, empowering local communities, fostering social cohesion, and deepening trust and local governance in parts of the Upper East Region.

As a result of the project, some community members and local representatives in the Garu, Bongo, and Bawku West Districts have reported renewed trust in local authorities, improved citizen engagement, and strengthened social ties.

The project, “Enhancing social cohesion and social contract through the empowerment of women and youth in three Northern Regions of Ghana,” is jointly implemented by the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), RISE-Ghana, CARO, and SIMBA Ghana.

It is funded by the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Through a series of innovative, community-driven interventions, the project is addressing the root causes of local conflicts and vulnerabilities to violent extremism.

The project employs strategic communication via radio and social media campaigns, town hall engagements, youth parliaments, and a mentorship programme, among other approaches, to build trust and increase citizen participation in governance.

“Before the project, it was difficult to bring constituents together or explain our limitations as Assembly Members. Now, thanks to the radio programmes, people understand our roles better and are reaching out to engage us. It has brought clarity and opened communication lines,” said Mr Elvis Nyaaba, the Assembly Member for Bongo-Feo in the Bongo District.

Citizens also welcomed the town hall sessions, saying they had brought technocrats from various district departments directly to rural communities and created opportunities for residents to interact with authorities.

“Considering the far location of the district assembly, there was no way our community could get an opportunity to listen to the various departments there. Seeing them all here and having the opportunity to ask them about their work and critique it makes us feel involved as citizens. The organizers must be commended,” said Madam Amina Abugre, a resident of Kupela in Bawku West.

The project has also revitalised civic structures such as youth parliaments. In the Garu District, a Youth Parliament was inaugurated for the first time, giving young people a formal platform to engage in local governance and mobilise for peace across political and ethnic divides.

In addition, a mentorship programme pairing youth and women with experienced leaders from politics, local government, civil society, and the business community has begun breaking down barriers to participation and leadership.

“Some people who wanted to aspire to become Assembly Members were discouraged by the constant demands placed on them. But after joining the mentorship programme, this project has shed more light on our local governance, and we are now ready to support our local governance machinery to function,” said Madam Sakina Adam, a youth mentee from Denugu in the Garu District.

Mahama reiterates Government’s commitment to expand Damongo Water Supply system

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, July 30, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his administration’s commitment to urgently expand the Damongo Water Supply system in the Savannah Region.

He underscored that the urgent completion and expansion of the Damongo Water Supply Project remains his number one priority.

“The hardship faced by residents due to lack of potable water is unacceptable in the 21st century,” President Mahama said during a courtesy call on him by the Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, the Overlord of Gonjaland at the Presidency in Accra.

“We will ensure the swift and sustainable delivery of clean water not only to Damongo but to surrounding communities including Larabanga, Canteen and Busunu.”

The Yagbonwura’s historic visit to the Presidency was to congratulate President Mahama on his re-election in the December 7, 2024, general elections.

President Mahama together with Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang received the Yagbonwura and his entourage of Paramount chiefs at the forecourt of the Presidency.

President Mahama said as they promised in their manifesto during the 2024 general elections, they were committed to establishing regional hospitals in all the six regions that were created.

He said they were committed to establishing a fully equipped Savannah Regional Hospital to be located in Damongo to serve as a referral centre for the region.

This, the President said would complement the existing facilities at the West Gonja Hospital and be supported by improved ambulance services, accommodation, and health professionals.

Under roads and transport, the President said the Busunu-Daboya-Mankarigu Road would be upgraded and completed.

He said crucial corridors linking farming communities to promote trade and provide access to health and education would be constructed as well.

He noted that feeder roads across Central Gonja and North Gonja would also receive attention to facilitate movement and reduce post-harvest losses.

“I’m talking of the road from Yapei through Chama to Binjai and to Salaga. This will link Central Gonja to Salaga, and that is one of the roads that will continue,” the President said.

He noted that the Government would put the bridge over that road so that they could open up that portion.

He said they were also already working on new bridges over the white Volta that would link Daboya directly to Tamale; adding that the work was progressing satisfactorily and that they were paying the contractor so that he could speed up the work.

He said other bridges being worked on included the Yapei and Buipe bridges.

“And for the districts in Savannah, we have announced 10 kilometers per year district roads. And all the districts in Savannah have been captured among the 166 districts that are going to be covered,” the President said.

“And so every year, you get 10 kilometers of roads and so for four years you get 40 kilometers of roads per district.”

President Mahama said the Government had the Bole town roads captured and that finally they were going to do the Bole Chache road.

He said Sawla-Tuna-Kalba too was going to receive its fair share of roads.

‘Big Push’ infrastructure plan key to 24-Hour economy vision

0

Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has outlined the government’s ambitious “Big Push” initiative as a critical step toward transforming Ghana’s economic landscape and making the 24-hour economy a practical reality.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday July 30, he explained that the Big Push programme is designed to provide the necessary infrastructure foundation to enable continuous economic activity, particularly by improving the transport and logistics systems that underpin commerce across the country.

“Why do we have to do Big Push?” he asked rhetorically. “The programme is also intended to provide the infrastructure base needed to support the 24-hour economy by ensuring round-the-clock movement of goods and services.”

According to the Minister, his Ministry has already completed studies and developed comprehensive engineering designs and cost estimates for key infrastructure projects under the Big Push framework. These interventions are intended to enhance road connectivity, reduce travel time, and lower the cost of transporting goods—ultimately impacting food prices and business efficiency nationwide.

Mr. Agbodza was quick to clarify that the Big Push is not a politically motivated or constituency-specific scheme. “It is a big idea to operationalise the 24-hour economy and reset the whole country,” he emphasized.

He added that the success of the initiative would have far-reaching benefits for everyday Ghanaians, especially in reducing the cost of living. “We believe that if Big Push— and I have no doubt that we will succeed— it should lead to lower prices of food in our country because part of the cost of foodstuff is based on the cost of transportation.”

The Big Push forms part of the broader economic transformation agenda championed by the government, aiming to create jobs, improve public services, and ensure inclusive growth through strategic infrastructure investment.

Minister Secures Peaceful Agreement Over Stalled Somanya-Kpong Road Protest

0

By Kamal Ahmed

Somanya(E/R), June 30, GNA – Mrs. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, Eastern Regional Minister, has brokered a temporary truce with youth groups in the Krobo area following the suspension of a planned protest over the deteriorating condition of the Somanya-Kpong road.

The demonstration, initially scheduled to pressure authorities into addressing the long-neglected road, was called off after a high-level meeting between the Minister and leaders of the advocacy groups Kloma Gbi and Kloma Hengme.

Also present were Municipal Chief Executives (MCEs) from Yilo and Lower Manya Krobo, and district security officials.

Speaking to the media after the meeting held on Monday, Mrs. Awatey said the government had issued fresh directives to ensure the stalled project resumes promptly.

“We’ve agreed with the youth groups to hold off on the protest,” she said. “President John Dramani Mahama has instructed contractors to return to abandoned project sites, and the Somanya-Kpong road is a priority.”

As part of interim measures, the MCEs have been directed to water the road twice weekly until work resumes in October.

The Minister also pledged to involve youth representatives in further engagements with sector ministers to promote transparency and accountability.

Despite the suspension, some residents expressed scepticism, citing past delays and broken promises. “This road is a hazard. Someone nearly died last week because of a pothole,” Mr. Samuel Kwesi Emahi, a resident stated. “We feel like our voices are being dismissed once again.”

Dr. Eric Lawer Sikatse, Secretary of Kloma Hengme, clarified that the protest was not cancelled, but only suspended pending action within a two-month window.

“This is a gesture of good faith,” he said. “If by October we see no results, the protest will go ahead. We are not politicising the issue; we are demanding accountability.”

He noted that the decision was also influenced by appeals from traditional leaders and assurances provided by the Minister.

Still, tensions linger in the Krobo communities, with some youth accusing local leaders of caving in to political pressure. Others have threatened to organise independent demonstrations should the government fail to act.

The Somanya-Kpong road serves as a key route for commuters, traders, and farmers. Its current state riddled with potholes and crumbling edges, continues to endanger lives and hamper economic activity.

While the Minister’s assurances have offered a temporary pause in planned protests, residents remain watchful. For many, real assurance will only come with visible progress on the ground.

Ghana makes theatre history with the world’s first mobile bus stage performance

0

The story was written and directed by the acclaimed Francis Jeremy Afizie The story was written and directed by the acclaimed Francis Jeremy Afizie

In a bold fusion of innovation and storytelling, Ghana has made global theatre history with the successful debut of the world’s first commercial mobile theatre production.

On Saturday, July 26, 2025, an Ayalolo bus in Accra was transformed into a moving stage for Kelewele Junction, a gripping live theatre performance by Agape Arts Productions (AAP).

The production staged three full-capacity performances at 4:00 PM, 6:00 PM, and 8:00 PM, offering passengers an emotionally charged, immersive experience that redefined conventional theatre.

What began as a simple bus ride quickly turned into a profound journey through the shadows of society’s most unspoken struggles.

Written and directed by the acclaimed Francis Jeremy Afizie, who boasts a repertoire of 25 original plays in just nine years, Kelewele Junction follows the story of six ex-convicts who find themselves on the same ride home after prison.

What starts as casual conversation soon unravels into emotional revelations, confessions that expose trauma, guilt, betrayal, survival, and a desperate hope for redemption.

Each character’s story peeled back layers of Ghana’s social reality, from a wrongly accused delivery rider and a defrocked pastor haunted by greed to a whistleblower criminalized for doing the right thing, a teenage girl imprisoned for defending herself against rape, and a betrayed wife navigating justice in a broken system.

The 90-minute ride took passengers on a symbolic and literal route through Accra, beginning at the National Theatre and weaving through the Ministries, Ako Adjei Interchange, Independence Square, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, and Jubilee House, before looping back through Osu Oxford Street to the National Theatre. The cityscape itself became part of the performance—a backdrop to stories too often ignored.

Speaking after the final performance, AAP’s Creative Director, Francis Jeremy Afizie, explained the deeper meaning behind the bus concept, “A bus carries people, their baggage, and their destinations. So does this story. We wanted to bring these hidden lives into public spaces, into people’s daily commutes, so that they cannot be ignored.”

With its fearless dialogue and moments of dark humour, Kelewele Junction delivered unfiltered social commentary on the justice system, prison conditions, sexual abuse, mental health, stigma, and reintegration. Audience members were not merely spectators, they were part of the unfolding narrative, locked in the same moving space as characters confronting past demons and seeking truth.

Reactions to the mobile theatre experience were immediate and heartfelt. Some audience members wept. Others applauded mid-performance. Many were left speechless. One viewer described it as:

“The most intimate and confronting performance I’ve ever experienced—every tear, every pause felt personal.”

By stripping away the distance between audience and stage, the production achieved what few theatre formats ever could, raw empathy.

While mobile theatre has existed in various forms around the world, Kelewele Junction is believed to be the first-ever live drama staged on a moving city bus as a commercial production. It is certainly the first of its kind in Ghana, and Africa.

AAP has hinted at additional performances and a potential national tour, aiming to make theatre more accessible, mobile, and impactful. The mobile theatre format, they say, will be further developed to reach communities directly—on their roads, in their realities, and through their stories.

In the end, Kelewele Junction was not just a play on wheels. It was a moving conversation, about truth, pain, justice, and healing. A testimony that Ghanaian theatre is not just evolving, it’s on the move.

‘No more unregulated and indiscriminate awarding of road contracts’ – Road minister

Kwame Governs Agbodza is the Minister of Roads and Highways Kwame Governs Agbodza is the Minister of Roads and Highways

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has declared an end to the unregulated and indiscriminate awarding of road contracts in the country.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series held at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, he said the current administration is committed to restoring discipline and transparency in the road sector.

According to him, previous administrations contributed to inefficiencies in the sector by awarding contracts without proper planning, budgetary allocation, or adherence to due process.

“The era of uncontrolled, unregulated award of road contracts is far gone. We now have in place strict procurement procedures and prioritisation mechanisms to ensure that every project we undertake is necessary, properly funded, and delivered on time,” he stated.

Agbodza said such practices created a backlog of unpaid contractors and led to several stalled projects, undermining both public trust and national development.

He assured the public that his sector will continue to scrutinise all ongoing and future projects, working closely with relevant state institutions to promote accountability and value for money.

“We are building a system that focuses not just on numbers, but on quality, integrity, and sustainability,” he said.

Dambai (O/R), July 30, GNA- The Oti Region is in mourning following the passing of legendary musician, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba and requested that he should be given a state burial.

Residents of Dambai, the regional capital, expressed their grief to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), describing Lumba’s music as a profound part of their lives.

According to the residents, Lumba’s approach to music was distinct, singing not to his audience but through them.

“His voice served as a bridge between confession and catharsis, resonating deeply with listeners who found solace in his lyrics,” a mourner said.

The residents praised Lumba’s mastery of paradox, which rendered him timeless; they said he embodied contradiction and conveyed the depth of someone who had witnessed life’s complexities.

Mr. Noah Gyamesi, a resident, said Lumba’s music was the backbone of many people’s experiences, particularly those who grew up in the 1990s and 2000s.

He emphasised that Lumba’s lyrics accompanied them through heartbreak, family conflicts, first loves and private contradictions.

The youth at ” Yehowa Ne Mabankese”, a welding and fabrication shop in Dambai, in an interview with GNA described Lumba’s music as a source of inspiration and comfort.

Twenty of them shared how Lumba’s songs had helped them through various challenges. In addition, they credited his songs with providing solace and motivation, helping them navigate life’s ups and downs.

DaSDA Africa urges gov’t for African Disability Protocol ratification

0

The Disability and Social Development Advocacy Africa (DaSDA Africa), also known as Positive Impact, has urged the government to make deliberate provisions for persons with disabilities and ratify the African Disability Protocol, a human rights treaty aimed at addressing discrimination against people with disabilities across Africa.

The call was made during the launch of a 12-month advocacy project promoting the African Disability Protocol and the rights and freedoms of women with disabilities.

The event took place on Tuesday, July 29, at Anyinam in the Atiwa East District of the Eastern Region.

The project, titled “Advocacy and Sensitisation Exercise to Promote the African Disability Protocol: The Rights and Freedoms of Women with Disability,” is being spearheaded by DaSDA Africa in collaboration with Rev. Perpetual Essel-Cobbah, Minister in Charge of the Methodist Church, Anyinam.
Speaking at the launch, Isaach Kwaku Wadi, Executive Director of DaSDA Africa, explained that the initiative is funded by ADD International through the Disability Justice Fund for Women (DJFW).

He said the project seeks to empower individuals with disabilities through advocacy, inclusion, and social development, aiming to build a more accessible and equitable Africa for all.

“We are advocating for the African disability protocol to be ratified, because the Disability Act 715 does not incorporate or cover all aspects of disability-related issues. The African disability protocol rather provides a wider framework that includes a lot of disability issues, “he said.
Also addressing the gathering, Inspector Eunice Amuzu from the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) highlighted the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of persons with disabilities.

She said the launch of the advocacy project reaffirms the Service’s dedication to protecting all citizens, including persons living with disabilities (PWDs).

In line with the National Persons with Disability Act, 2006 (Act 715), and Ghana’s ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the Police Service is working to ensure that persons with disabilities receive equitable treatment, legal protection, and access to justice.

This includes integrating disability studies into law enforcement training curricula, promoting dignified treatment of persons with disabilities, and ensuring police services are accessible to all.

In a related development, DaSDA Africa also unveiled an official theme song for the project, titled “We Rise.” The song calls on all stakeholders to support the cause of disability advocacy and stand in solidarity with persons with disabilities.

The launch event drew participation from key stakeholders, including departmental heads of the Atiwa East District Assembly, religious and traditional leaders, and members of the Ghana Society of Physically Disabled (GSPD) within the district.

YAFO Institute pushes for grassroots inclusion in Ghana Scholarships Authority Bill

0

The YAFO Institute has called on Parliament to deepen the decentralisation focus of the Ghana Scholarships Authority Bill by giving local educators, particularly head teachers, a stronger role in identifying and supporting needy but brilliant students.

In a statement, the policy and research think tank commended Parliament for considering the bill, which seeks to overhaul the management and disbursement of government scholarships across the country.

The bill is currently under review by the Joint Committee on Education, Public Administration, and State Interests and Civil Society Organizations.

According to the Institute, while the bill represents a critical step towards transparency and merit-based scholarship allocation, it must go further in empowering communities to take part in the process.

“We believe that education is the foundation for sustainable development,” the statement read. “Bringing the process closer to the communities, especially through head teachers who are familiar with students’ realities, will ensure the scholarships truly benefit the most deserving.”

The Ghana Scholarships Authority Bill proposes a centralized board that includes representatives from key ministries, the Attorney General’s office, the Association of Ghana Industries, and presidential nominees.

It also emphasizes focus areas like STEM and aligns scholarship awards with national development priorities through coordination with the National Development Planning Commission.

But the YAFO Institute believes the lack of grassroots representation on the board is a gap that could limit the impact of the bill.

“Head teachers, particularly at the basic level, know which students are academically capable but held back by financial challenges. Including them in the decision-making process will bridge the gap between policy and reality,” the Institute said.

To this end, the YAFO Institute has proposed the creation of a nomination system where head teachers in both public and private basic schools are formally involved in identifying qualified students.

This would allow teachers to recommend students who demonstrate academic excellence but face economic hardship, ensuring no talent is overlooked due to location or lack of access to information.

The Institute is also advocating for training programs to help head teachers understand scholarship criteria, navigate online application systems, and effectively engage in the selection process. In rural areas, this may include providing digital tools and internet access to help bridge the technology gap and ensure their participation.

To promote fairness and reduce potential abuse, YAFO is recommending the formation of district-level verification committees. These would consist of head teachers, education officers, and respected community leaders who work together to screen scholarship nominations and confirm eligibility. This structure would also allow for a feedback mechanism to improve the system over time.

The Institute believes it is equally important to recognize the efforts of educators who identify deserving students. Schools and teachers that consistently produce successful scholarship recipients could benefit from professional development opportunities, public recognition, or educational resources that support their efforts.

The institute also emphasized the need for strong public awareness, especially at the basic school level. They propose using school assemblies, radio, and community forums to educate students, teachers, and parents about scholarship opportunities and the application process.

In addition, the Institute suggests aligning scholarships with both STEM and vocational pathways. This, they believe, will create more opportunities for students who show potential in technical and hands-on fields, not just traditional academic areas.

Local industries and technical institutions could also play a role by providing mentorship and career exposure to scholarship recipients.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, who presented the bill to Parliament, has stated that the legislation is intended to eliminate political patronage, nepotism, and corruption in the scholarship process. YAFO’s recommendations support that goal by anchoring the system in community knowledge and firsthand experience.

The Institute stressed that these proposals align with Ghana’s Shared Growth and Development Agenda and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal Four, which calls for inclusive and equitable quality education for all.

As Parliament continues to examine the Ghana Scholarships Authority Bill, YAFO is urging lawmakers to include stronger provisions for grassroots involvement. They are also calling on the Ministry of Education and the Scholarships Authority to pilot this model in selected regions before implementing it nationwide.

The Institute expressed readiness to work with government, policymakers, the Ghana Education Service, civil society organizations, and private school associations to shape a truly inclusive and impactful scholarship framework.

“The Ghana Scholarships Authority Bill has the power to transform access to education. But for it to truly serve its purpose, it must include the voices of those who see and nurture potential every day—our head teachers,” the statement concluded.

YAFO remains committed to removing the financial barriers that keep thousands of talented young Ghanaians from accessing the education they deserve and contributing meaningfully to national development.

Mothers must protect their children ahead of August 2 movie premiere

Diana Asamoah is a Ghanaian Gospel singer Diana Asamoah is a Ghanaian Gospel singer

Gospel musician and evangelist, Diana Asamoah, has issued a cryptic warning to Ghanaian parents, urging them to be extra vigilant with their children in the days leading up to a yet-to-be-named movie premiere scheduled for August 2, 2025.

Speaking on Angel TV, the Gospel singer did not mention anyone by name, but her comments have drawn attention because the date she referred to matches the upcoming premiere of actor and filmmaker Kwadwo Nkansah LilWin’s new movie, Ibrahim Traore.

In her message, Diana Asamoah hinted at spiritual concerns and suggested that not everyone involved in the creative space has pure intentions.

Without making direct accusations, she claimed that some individuals use the name of God in vain and may be involved in harmful practices.

“I do not speak to murderers. He is about to premiere his movie, which is scheduled for August 2, 2025. I urge Ghanaian mothers to be vigilant in the time leading up to the premiere. Every mother should protect her child, as there are some individuals who, lacking genuine faith, only mention God’s name in vain and may engage in harmful rituals. If you rush through life, you may dismiss important warnings and end up making dangerous choices,” she said.

Though she did not explain what specific event or past experience she was referring to, her words have sparked speculation, especially given the timing of LilWin’s movie premier.

‘Free Ato Essien now!’ – Godfred Dame to AG Dominic Ayine

0

(L-R) Godfred Dame says Ato Essien should be free by Dr Dominic Ayine (L-R) Godfred Dame says Ato Essien should be free by Dr Dominic Ayine

Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has called on his successor, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, to ‘free’ the founder of defunct Capital Bank, William Ato Essien.

Dame made this call in a write-up criticising Dr Ayine’s decision to file a nolle prosequi in the case of former finance minister Dr Kwabena Duffuor and seven others, who were facing charges in connection with the collapse of the defunct uniBank.

He pointed out that Ato Essien was jailed over the collapse of his bank, which is the same reason Dr Duffuor and the seven others in the uniBank case are being prosecuted.

He stated that based on the same principle he relied on to make the decision to withdraw the case of the former finance minister, the Attorney General must also free Ato Essien, who is serving a 15-year jail term.

“In Republic v. William Ato Essien – a case arising out of the collapse of Capital Bank – the amount admitted as owed by Ato Essien himself was GH¢27 million. The state, in an agreement entered into under Section 35 of the Courts Act, 1993 (Act 459), settled on GH¢90 million to be paid by the accused person.

“The accused paid GH¢30 million in cash before the settlement was adopted by the court, with the rest to be paid over a period of one year. When he defaulted after paying GH¢9 million in addition to the GH¢30 million deposit, the Attorney-General applied to the court for him to be sentenced to a term in prison,” parts of his write-up, which was posted on social media on July 29, 2025, read.

“Ato Essien is presently in custody serving a 15-year jail term. I daresay that, on account of the ‘RESETTING’ of prosecution we are witnessing, there is no justification for Ato Essien to be in jail. Free Ato Essien now!” he added.

Dame also raised questions about suggestions that the uniBank case is being withdrawn because the accused persons have paid 60% of the money involved in the case.

However, Dame claimed that no money has been paid to the state, as the public has been made to believe.

“Questions arising include: Was any agreement executed with the Republic before the entry of nolle prosequi, and if so, when? Where is that agreement? Has any fair and objective valuation of the properties been done, and if so, when? Where is the valuation report? In the event of default, what is the penalty and how enforceable is it?” he quizzed.

Use your intelligence to solve problems – Educationist to students

0

By Kodjo Adams

Accra, July 30, GNA – Dr Monica Obeng-Koranteng, a multidisciplinary educationist, has admonished Ghanaian students to be innovative with the knowledge acquired to help address societal problems.

“In the modern era, intelligence is no longer solely about knowledge but about applying those skills creatively to solve complex problems and drive innovations,” she said.

Dr Koranteng gave the advice at the maiden Accra Technical University (ATU) Career Job Fair, in partnership with the African Centre for Career Enhancement and Skills Support.

It is on the theme: “Fostering Employability and Skills Development through Industry-Academia Collaboration.”

The fair brought together ATU students and selected senior high and technical schools in the Greater Accra Region, where students interacted with industry players for career development.

Dr Koranteng said job security was not about holding a position in an organisation but exploring new areas of interest to expand their scope.

“A career path is not linear but characterised by twists and turns. It is imperative to see challenges as opportunities and growth,” she urged the students.

She encouraged them to develop a range of skills like critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration to be relevant in the world of work.

She said entrepreneurship was a mindset, an attitude, a set of skills, and a process that enhanced personal and organisational effectiveness, profitability, and growth, which had benefits to navigate in the current emerging world.

“You need personal skills like artificial intelligence adaptability and time management to fit into the contemporary market economy,” she said, and urged them to be more deliberate in searching for career jobs.

Professor Felix Kutsanedzie, the Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor, ATU, said the fair would help the workforce and students to interact for mutual benefits.

That, he said, was important because the employer needed a competent person to optimise profit and solve problems.

“The cost of making a mistake in a company can collapse the business; hence, the interaction between industry and academia addresses these challenges,” he said.

Mr Seth Allotey, the Dean of Students at ATU, expressed optimism that the fair would open doors for internship, mentorship, and job opportunities for the students.

“Career success is not only about getting jobs but also about being passionate about the opportunities,” he said.

“Being passionate means, you do the job well and effectively to ensure optimal success.”

0

The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, has issued a strong warning to fisherfolk who continue to engage in illegal fishing practices, particularly light fishing.

Speaking on the sidelines of a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, the Minister said the government will not hesitate to crack the whip on those who flout the laws governing the sector.

She emphasised that the government remains committed to protecting the country’s marine resources for future generations.

“It has come to our attention that a lot of fishermen complied. They went fishing without light, without illegal methods, and they had a bumper harvest. However, some fishermen refused to abide by the rules and went fishing with light fishing and other illegal methods.

“We are using this conversation to sound a warning to all fishermen. As part of the reset agenda, we are going to crack the whip. We are going to enforce the fisheries law that bans illegal fishing methods. When we get you, don’t say we didn’t warn you,” he said.

Gov’t to build new public technical university in Western Region – Pres. Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that his government will build a new public technical university in the Western Region to expand access to technical and vocational education for young people.

In a speech at the Jubilee House during a courtesy call by the Paramount Chief of the Essikado Traditional Area, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, and other members of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, President Mahama said the new university forms part of a broader plan to prepare the region’s youth for emerging job opportunities in mining, oil and gas, agribusiness, and digital industries.

He explained that the technical university will be designed to meet the practical needs of industries in the region and across the country.

According to him, this move is crucial to Ghana’s long-term development goals, especially as the Western Region continues to contribute significantly to the national economy through natural resources.

“The Western Region holds immense potential to lead Ghana into a new era of industrialization and job creation. But we must equip our young people with the right skills. That is why we are building a new public technical university here” the President intimated.

He added that this new institution will work alongside other youth-focused programs, including a region-wide employment initiative focused on agri-tech, tourism, green jobs, and digital entrepreneurship.

President Mahama revealed plans to upgrade the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital into a modern teaching hospital that will serve as a referral center for the Western and Western North regions.

This, he said, would improve healthcare delivery and provide training grounds for medical students.

He assured the chiefs that these initiatives would help bridge development gaps and ensure that the youth in the region have better access to education, training, and jobs.

The President urged the chiefs to support these efforts by promoting peace, unity, and development in their communities.

Gospel artistes should focus on ministry, not money – Kofi Owusu Peprah

Gospel musician Kofi Owusu Peprah has urged his fellow gospel artistes to shift their focus from making money to spreading the message of God’s love.

The singer believes that the true calling of a gospel musician is to share the gospel, not to chase personal financial gain.

In an interview on Joy Prime TV, he explained that gospel musicians are called to minister, not to operate like business people.

He encouraged artistes to be flexible and considerate, especially when churches or individuals reach out to them for performances.

“We have not been called to make money. My plea is that as Christians, we shouldn’t be so rigid and hard-fisted about how people should reach you. You need to consider a lot of things, like the size of the church. Let’s not be so strict; it’s not cast in stone. If you had to put a charge on the message of the cross, how much would it be? You can’t put a price on the cross,” he said.

While he acknowledged that gospel musicians need resources to carry out their work, he also urged churches and event organisers to play their part by offering fair compensation.

According to him, musicians often have to pay instrumentalists, sound engineers, and other support staff, so proper planning and mutual understanding are important.

He added that when someone is truly led by the Holy Spirit, they will naturally see the value in supporting gospel artistes for their service.

“If anybody invites you and the person truly has the Holy Spirit in him or her, the person wouldn’t have a problem with some of these things,” he said.

“We’re not surprised at all. We gladly congratulate you and know that you can achieve even more as you move forward. We want to encourage you to continue doing your best,” she stated.

The Vice President praised the team’s resilience, skill, and determination throughout the tournament.

“It wasn’t long ago when we witnessed the Black Queens encouraging young girls in football. There are times when we all need to recognise that we are all ordinary people, regardless of gender. When given the opportunity, we can express ourselves in ways that are both acceptable and legally permissible,” she added.

Her remarks stressed the importance of the team’s achievement in inspiring young girls and women throughout the country.

“I want to congratulate you once again. As you continue forward, remember that while you are the Black Queens, many people have contributed to your success. Sometimes, we stand in the spotlight, but many faceless people have paved the way for us. Moving forward, we must ensure that we create opportunities for the Black Queens to reach their full potential,” she emphasised.

The team’s success has ignited renewed optimism and enthusiasm for women’s football in Ghana.

Gov’t caps cement price at GH¢95 for all road projects – Roads Minister

0

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has said new procurement directives to help address inefficiencies and inflated costs have been introduced in the road construction sector, starting with a price ceiling on cement supplied for government-funded projects.

Speaking at the government’s weekly press briefings dubbed “Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, Mr Agbodza said suppliers providing cement to government contractors must not charge more than GH¢95 per 50kg bag. The move is aimed at reducing inflated input costs that have affected project delivery.

“Some contractors are being forced to buy cement at over GH¢120 a bag, even when delivering public works. That is unacceptable. We are drawing the line,” he said.

The cement pricing policy forms part of broader procurement reforms under the current administration. Mr Agbodza said the aim is to ensure value for money, stop unregulated contract awards, and prevent politically motivated project cost inflation.

“People walk into my office daily with unsolicited packages, throwing documents for me to sign. That era is over. Only programmed and budgeted projects will go forward,” he said.

Mr Agbodza attributed many of the cost overruns and poor outcomes in past projects to the design-and-build model, which he said allowed contracts to be awarded without prior engineering designs or cost estimates.

Under the revised approach, all major road projects, including those under the government’s Big Push programme, will be designed, costed, and approved internally by state technical agencies before any procurement begins.

“For the first time, road project costing will come from government agencies, not private contractors. This means no more bloated budgets or political padding,” Mr Agbodza said.

He added that delays in the processing of payment certificates, as well as weak cost controls, had caused many contractors to abandon sites, especially in regions where material costs continued to rise unchecked.

The Ministry of Roads and Highways is also expected to introduce new measures to standardise procurement timelines, track contractor pricing electronically, and improve supervision of ongoing works.

The cement pricing directive takes immediate effect for all projects funded by the central government through the Ministry.

Mr Agbodza said these reforms are aimed at restoring public confidence in the sector and ensuring that the use of public funds results in visible and durable infrastructure, especially at a time when national resources are limited.

Bank of Ghana tightens rules on remittances amid compliance failures

By Jibril Abdul Mumuni

Accra, July 30, GNA– The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced stricter measures against Banks, Dedicated Electronic Money Issuers (DEMIs), Enhanced Payment Service Providers (EPSPs), and Money Transfer Operators (MTOs).

This comes as part of the ongoing fight against non-compliance with inward remittance guidelines.

In a notice signed by Ms. Sandra Thompson, Secretary at the central bank, the bank observed persistent violations of the Foreign Exchange Act, 2006, and the Updated Guidelines for Inward Remittance Services by Payment Service Providers, despite previous cautions.

The BoG has observed continued infractions, which include the termination of inward remittances using unapproved channels, engagement in Foreign Exchange Swaps within the context of Inward Remittance Business.

Other violations, according to the central bank, included the termination of remittances on behalf of institutions without prior approval from the Bank of Ghana and the application of unprescribed Forex Exchange rates.

The Bank of Ghana has emphasized its commitment to sanctioning any violating institution and terminating the remittance partnerships of all MTOs whose operations were not in compliance with the approved guidelines.

To ensure strict adherence, the BoG has reiterated that the funding of the Local Settlement Account should be strictly done in accordance with section 7.1 (c) of the Updated Guidelines for Inward Remittance Services by Payment Service Providers.

The central bank also instructed that all disbursements shall be from the Local Settlement Account as stated in section 7.2 (a) of the Updated Guidelines for Inward Remittance Services by Payment Service Providers.

It also said DEMIs/EPSPs should also ensure that pre-funding arrangements with the Settlement Bank shall be done in accordance with section 7.2 (b) of the Updated Guidelines for Inward Remittance Services by Payment Service Providers.

In the bid to ensure transparency and accountability in the foreign exchange and remittance ecosystem, all Banks, DEMIs, and EPSPs are now expressly directed to submit weekly reports per MTO.

These comprehensive reports must detail daily individual inward remittance transactions logs, along with the corresponding daily sum of foreign exchange credited into respective Nostro accounts.

The Bank of Ghana stressed that failure to submit accurate and timely reports constituted a regulatory breach under Section 42 of the Payment Systems and Services Act (Act 987) and Section 93(3) (d) of Act 930, and will attract the appropriate administrative sanctions.

Suspension of Chief Justice part of plot to control courts

CJ Torkornoo was suspended after Council of State concluded she had a case to answer in 3 petitions CJ Torkornoo was suspended after Council of State concluded she had a case to answer in 3 petitions

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned the suspension of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing it as a politically motivated act designed to weaken the judiciary and compromise democratic governance.

Addressing a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down on Tuesday, July 29, the General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, accused the NDC administration of engaging in a deliberate scheme to take control of the courts and influence judicial outcomes in its favour.

“This disgraceful act is a direct attempt to cripple judicial independence and bend the course of justice to serve the agenda of the ruling party,” he stated.

“Indeed, it is a dangerous precedent that threatens the very foundation of our democracy,” he added.

According to him, this is the first time in Ghana’s democratic history that a sitting Chief Justice has been suspended in such a manner and under circumstances which they believe are both reckless and alarming.

Frimpong Kodua warned that the suspension of the Chief Justice is not an isolated incident but part of a broader political strategy by the government to capture state institutions, beginning with the judiciary.

“It is a well-orchestrated attempt by this government to exert undue influence over our judicial system, and by extension, our democracy,” he alleged.

He also raised concerns about recent judicial rulings which he called “questionable judgments” from some courts in recent weeks.

“We are not surprised by the recent pronouncements of some courts. We live in this country and see what is happening. Some of the judgments delivered are highly questionable,” he said.

Frimpong Kodua urged members of the judiciary to remain firm and impartial in their constitutional duties, cautioning them not to allow political actors to dictate the outcomes of cases.

“They should not allow political parties, particularly the government of the day, to dictate how they administer justice,” he urged.

“You swore an oath of office to protect fundamental human rights and safeguard our Constitution. We call on you to stand by it, abide by it, and not allow political actors to influence your judgments,” he added.

The General Secretary called on civil society organisations, the Ghana Bar Association, and religious leaders to stand firm against what they call an emerging culture of executive overreach.
