President-elect John Dramani Mahama has called on all political parties that participated in the 2024 elections to unite and contribute to Ghana’s transformation.
Addressing congregants at the 31st all-night service held at the Sanctuary of Wind and Fire Assemblies of God in Tamale on December 31, Mahama emphasised the importance of national unity and collective action in tackling the country’s challenges.
He also underscored the role of faith and spiritual renewal, encouraging his appointees to remain grounded as they prepare to fulfil their mandate to the nation.
“All of us, National Democratic Congress, New Patriotic Party, New Force, Movement for Change, Convention People’s Party, People’s National Congress, All People’s Congress, all of them, it will take everybody to get on board, even those who don’t belong to any party to be able to change this country to what we want it to be.
“The easy part of the campaign and election is over, now the difficult part begins, now the real work begins. If we prayed and fasted to have a successful election, then now is the time to pray and fast even more, that God will raise our nation and like my little daughter said ‘make it the black star of Africa once again’. Our country is in crisis we all know it.”

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has rejected the National Democratic Congress (NDC) challenge to a mandamus application submitted by four parliamentary candidates from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He underscored that the Electoral Commission (EC) is currently resolving the contested results in four constituencies through its administrative procedures.
In remarks made following the High Court’s decision to schedule a ruling on the NDC’s objection for January 1, 2025, Afenyo-Markin pointed out that the EC had previously indicated that irregularities in the collation process contributed to the results announced for Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, and Dome Kwabenya.
“The EC itself has stated emphatically that there was no earlier valid declaration of results in these constituencies. The argument that results were declared is neither here nor there.”
Afenyo-Markin emphasized the importance of the current legal proceedings, drawing a distinction between this and what he characterized as the NDC’s initial reaction to the contested results.
“At least, we’ve managed to bring them to civility in the courtroom. We believe in the rule of law and are confident in the outcome.”
The mandamus application submitted by the NPP candidates aims to compel the Electoral Commission (EC) to finalize its collation and announcement of results, a procedure that the EC had already intended to undertake again through administrative means.
The High Court’s decision on January 1 will determine whether it can advance to consider the mandamus application or reject it in light of the NDC’s objection.
Senior aides to South Korea’s impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol offered to resign en masse on Wednesday, a day after his office expressed regret over acting President Choi Sang-mok’s approved of two new judges to a court set to decide Yoon’s fate. Yoon’s chief of staff, policy chief, national security advisor and special advisor on foreign affairs and security, as well as all other senior secretaries, tendered their resignation, his office said in a statement, without elaborating.
The aides had repeatedly expressed their intent to step down in the wake of Yoon’s botched attempt to declare martial law on Dec. 3, but their resignations have not been accepted, said a presidential official, who declined to be identified owing to political sensitivities. The official said the senior secretaries have been assisting Choi since he took over as acting president. Two other officials said the aides do not participate in day-to-day government operations, but are required to report to Choi and attend meetings when necessary.
The aides’ latest offer came a day after Choi’s surprise approval to fill two vacancies on the Constitutional Court handling the impeachment trial against Yoon. It brought the total number of justices to eight on the nine-member court. Any decision in the Yoon case will require the agreement of at least six judges. Yoon’s ruling People Power Party criticised Choi’s decision as “dogmatic” and lacking sufficient consultations.
Finance Minister Choi assumed the role of acting president on Friday after the impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who had been acting president since Dec. 14 when Yoon was suspended from power. Yoon faces investigations on allegations that he led an insurrection, and a Seoul district court on Tuesday granted approval for his arrest, the first for a sitting president.

After a legal battle lasting more than eight years, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have settled their divorce, according to court documents obtained by CNN.
The settlement was filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court on December 30, court records show. Financial records were not disclosed, nor were details of the former couple’s custody arrangement related to their two minor children.
“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over,” Jolie’s lawyer James Simon of Hersh Mannis told CNN Monday.
CNN has reached out to representatives for Pitt for comment.
Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt in 2016.
Once one of Hollywood’s most glamorous couples, Jolie and Pitt were together about a decade and became parents of six before they married in 2014.
The length of their ongoing divorce can be attributed to a number of factors, including a contentious custody trial, fallout from a 2016 dispute on a private plane and a complicated legal battle relating to Jolie’s sale of her stake in Château Miraval, the French winery they once co-owned and the property on which they were married.
Details surrounding the circumstances of the 2016 plane incident emerged in August 2022, when a heavily redacted FBI report, provided to CNN by a source at the time, revealed that Jolie had accused Pitt of physically assaulting her and verbally abusing their children while they were aboard the private jet, traveling to the US from France.
Pitt was never arrested or charged with any crimes, according to an FBI statement at the time.
Jolie filed her divorce petition days after the flight, citing irreconcilable differences.
She requested the court to grant her sole physical custody of the couple’s then-minor children – Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne, who were between the ages of 8 and 15 at the time – with visitation rights for Pitt, who would retain joint legal custody.
In April 2024, Jolie claimed in a legal filing in the winery case that Pitt’s “history of physical abuse of Jolie started well before the family’s September 2016 plane trip.” The filing did not go into further detail about the alleged prior abuse.
According to that filing, Jolie chose not to press charges against Pitt in relation to the plane incident at the time because she believed “the best course was for Pitt to accept responsibility and help the family recover from the post-traumatic stress he caused.”
Jolie and Pitt were granted a dissolution in status only of their marriage in 2019.
In an interview with Vogue India the following year, Jolie said that she “separated” from Pitt for the “wellbeing” of her family.
“It was the right decision. I continue to focus on their healing,” she said. “They are six very brave, very strong young people.”
The French winery they once co-owned remains the center of a contentious and ongoing legal feud, stemming from Jolie’s 2021 sale of her stake that Pitt has since claimed was unlawful.
President-elect John Dramani Mahama is hoping he is able to appoint a crack team of selfless individuals who will work towards making Ghana better.
According to him, he cannot tell what people have in their minds and their hearts as they take over the administration of the country.
He is, therefore, counting on God’s wisdom and the Lord’s discernment to choose people who will work for the betterment of Ghana.
John Dramani Mahama made this known when he was addressing a congregation on December 31, 2024.
“I have a huge task ahead of me. No man has yet invented a machine that can see into the minds or hearts of human beings, and yet you have to choose a team to work with you. I pray that God gives us the sense of discernment so that we can choose a team that will work for this country,” he indicated.
Adding further that, “We need to be selfless so that we can gain back the trust of our young people that democracy indeed worked. It is going to be 32 years from the day when, in 1993, we gathered at Independence Square, where we started the 4th Republic.
“The 4th Republic has been the most enduring Republic in the history of Ghana because it has lasted long. We are going to go there on January 7, and yet many of our young people believe that the country is not working for them; it is not opening opportunities for them.
So that day when we are all going to Independence Square, even though I will be the centre of attraction, lifting that sword, sitting on that chair, it is all of us lifting that sword, and I pray that our country Ghana becomes great and strong”.
Former AS Roma midfielder Ahmed Barusso has disclosed how an injury he sustained while playing for Novara created an opportunity for current Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.
At the time, Fernandes was a young player, making 21 appearances for Novara during the 2012/13 Serie B season.
According to Barusso, Fernandes’ breakthrough came as a result of the injury that sidelined him.
In an interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah TV, the 40-year-old explained that the constant play on synthetic pitches contributed to his knee injury, which kept him out for a significant part of the season.
This he said, opened the door for Fernandes, who was then part of the youth team, to be promoted to the senior squad.
“We played and trained on synthetic pitches, which took a toll on me. As a result, I was sidelined for the season with a knee injury, and that gave them the chance to promote Fernandes from the juvenile side to the senior team,” Barusso recalled.
Fernandes went on to make a name for himself, earning a move to Udinese the following season.
Over the next few years, he continued to impress, eventually joining Sampdoria in 2017 and moving to Sporting CP the year after, where he became one of the most sought-after midfielders. Fernandes later signed with Manchester United.
Barusso said his injury forced him to return to Ghana before making a move to Arezzo in Serie C, where he began winding down his career in the lower leagues.
He also represented Ghana at the 2008 African Cup of Nations, playing two matches as the team secured a bronze medal.
Venâncio Mondlane is currently in hiding in an unknown country
Mozambique’s main opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane has called for unity ahead of a fresh round of protests against the outcome of presidential elections.
In a live broadcast on his Facebook page, Mondlane – who is in self-imposed exile – urged citizens to join hands in their neighbourhoods at 11.45pm and sing the national anthem until 2025 kicks in.
“We must find ourselves again as Mozambicans,” he said.
Mozambique has faced one of is bloodiest weeks since October, when Mondlane first called for protests after rejecting his defeat in the elections.
A local monitoring group, Plataforma Decide, said that 179 people died in riots last week, after the country’s highest court confirmed that the ruling party candidate, Daniel Chapo, won the election.
This brought the death toll to 278 people since demonstrations began after the electoral commission declared Chapo the winner of elections in October, extending Frelimo’s 49-year rule.
The fatalities include protesters, children and members of the security forces.
Mondlane fled Mozambique, saying his life was in danger after two of his aides were shot dead in October.
In his latest address, he urged people to “cook and socialise” in their neighbourhoods, before a new wave of protests begin on 2 January.
“I am ready to lose my life for this fight,” he added.
He previously said he will install himself as president on 15 January – the day Chapo is due to be sworn in – despite the constitutional court upholding his rival’s victory.
It is unclear how Mondlane intends to take office, given he is in self-imposed exile.
In a statement, Chapo said he would serve as “the President for all” after his inauguration.
“We will soon work together on solutions to the problems caused by this unfortunate situation,” he added.
The electoral commission declared Chapo the winner of the election with 71% of the vote, compared to Mondlane’s 20%.
The constitutional court revised the result last week, giving Chapo 65% and Mondlane 24%.
International election observers previously said the vote was flawed, pointing to doctored numbers and other irregularities during the counting process.
The ensuing protests have dealt a severe blow to Mozambique’s economy.
More than 12,000 people have lost their jobs and more than 500 companies have been vandalised, Onorio Manuel, vice-president of the country’s Confederation of Economic Associations, told local news website O Pais.
Along with businesses, Frelimo offices, courts, police stations and road toll booths have been torched.
Last week, the police reported that more than 1,500 prisoners escaped from a maximum security prison, taking advantage of the political unrest.
Neighbouring countries have also felt the impact of Mozambique’s unrest. Several thousand Mozambicans have fled across the border into Malawi as a result of the violence.
And a concerned South Africa dispatched a special envoy, Sydney Mufamadi, to Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, to discuss the crisis with President Filipe Nyusi, who is due to step down at the end of his two terms.
Mufamadi said the discussion focused on understanding the nature of the crisis and exploring how South Africa could help resolve it.
South African officials say they have stepped up intelligence and security operations along the border in order to prevent criminal elements from crossing.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has encouraged the youth of Ghana to move forward with determination and to avoid succumbing to despair as 2025 approaches.
He emphasized the importance of having ambitious dreams and putting in the necessary effort, reminding them that they have the power to shape their own future.
The President highlighted the necessity for all Ghanaians to actively participate in building the nation they aspire to.
Delivering his final New Year Message to the Nation, on December 31, the President said, “Driven by the belief that our best days are still ahead. Ghana’s story is not about her leaders. It’s about her people. Each of us has a role to play in building the nation we envision. To the youth of Ghana, you are the heartbeat of our future.
“Your energy, creativity, and dreams are what will drive this nation forward. Do not let fear hold you back. Dream big, work hard and know that the future is yours to shape.”
He expressed gratitude to individuals across various sectors for their contributions to the nation’s growth and encouraged them to work towards building a nation that benefits everyone.
“To our farmers, teachers, health workers, traders, business persons, public officers, security persons, and all who keep our nation moving, I say thank you. You’re the backbone of our society, and your contributions make Ghana what it is.
“Let us continue to support one another and build a country that works for everyone.”

ATTORNEY Randall Hector, a lawyer who was prosecuting a known gang leader was shot and killed on Tuesday night in Port of Spain.
There was an attempt on the gang leader’s life outside the Besson Street Police Station on Saturday and the fear of reprisal killings was supposedly a main factor why Government decided to declare a State of Emergency (SoE) on Monday.
An Accra High Court has fixed today , January 1, 2025, to rule on a preliminary objection raised against the writ of mandamus filed against the Electoral Commission in its bid to collate Parliamentary elections in four disputed Constituencies.
This was after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had raised a preliminary objection on the writ of mandamus filed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against the EC to collate Parliamentary results in four Constituencies.
The NDC, through its Counsel Mr Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, argued that the mandamus application was an election petition in disguise and same was incompetent.
“I raise a preliminary objection for the incompetence of this application pursuant to Section 16 and 20 of the PNDC Law 284 as amended.
This is an election petition disguised as a mandamus application.” Mr Tameklo told the trial Judge, Justice Foson Baah Agyapong.
Mr Tameklo held that the NPP should have filed an election petition and not a writ of mandamus. This is because in instances where candidates have been declared in an election rather came under an election petition.
Under Section 20 of the PNDC law 284, Mr Tameklo contended that election of a candidate shall be declared void on an election petition if the High Court was satisfied that the election was marred by acts of intimidation, bribery and mistreatment.
“The instant application is a clever way to circumvent the proper hearing to be done by evidence in an election petition.
Mr Gary Nimako Marfo, Counsel for the New Patriotic Party, said the NDC objection should be based on point of law.
Opposing the objection, Mr Nimako Marfo argued that PNDC Law 284 quoted by Mr Tameklo had no repercussion on the application of mandamus since the results of disputed constituencies were yet to be gazetted.
According to him, the mandamus application is not here to cancel election results, for there is none to be cancelled.
“There is a public duty imposed on the Electoral Commission to conduct public elections and supervise same. Article 45 of the1992 Constitution makes it clear that the EC was mandated to conduct public elections, including collation and declaration of parliamentary results as to who won or lost.”
In a brief submission, Mr Justin Amenuvor, who represented the EC quizzed, “How does a person who has raised preliminary objection expect this court to say whether or not there has been a validly concluded election without going into the affidavit?”
A fresh application of mandamus application was filed by the NPP in respect of Tema Central, Techiman South, Ablekuma North and Okaikwei Central.
This was after the Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision, quashed the High Court order to collate parliamentary results for four constituencies.
The court in its ruling in an order of certiorari among others, held that the NDC should have been given a hearing in the writ of mandamus. GNA

This New Year’s message is deeply personal to me, as it is my last as your President. Serving you has been the greatest honour of my life. I stand before you not just as a leader, but as a fellow Ghanaian.
I am humbled by the trust you have placed in me and inspired by the resilience and fortitude I have seen in each of you. Together, we have walked a journey of transformation, and it is a journey I will always cherish.
In the years I have been privileged to lead, we have worked tirelessly to lay a foundation for a Ghana that is strong, united, and free.
The Free Senior High School Policy has given hope to millions of young Ghanaians and their families. We have seen our healthcare systems strengthened, our roads expanded, our industries fortified, our agriculture revitalized, and our digital landscape transformed.
Additionally, our economy is rebounding impressively, as demonstrated by the remarkable 7.2% growth achieved in the third quarter of 2024, with the year’s growth rate projected at 6.8%.

As Ghanaians prepare to usher in the new year, the Ghana Police Service has issued a stern warning to faith-based organisations and individuals against spreading fake prophecies that could cause fear, panic, and endanger lives.
In a press release signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, the police cautioned that such actions would not be tolerated, especially during the 31st-night celebrations.
History of Fake Prophecies
In recent years, Ghana has witnessed a surge in fake prophecies, particularly during the 31st-night celebrations.
These prophecies, often made by self-proclaimed prophets, have caused widespread fear and panic among Ghanaians.
In some cases, these prophecies have led to chaos, destruction of property, and even loss of lives.
Police Assurance of Security
The police have assured the public that adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure peace, security, law, and order during the 31st-night celebrations.
Residential and highway patrols have been intensified, and traffic police officers have been deployed at major intersections and public roads to ensure free vehicular movement and strict compliance with traffic regulations.
Security At Faith-Based Events
The police have also assured that security would be provided at faith-based events and social gatherings nationwide to ensure the safety of all and maintain a peaceful atmosphere during these occasions.
Caution Against Misinformation
The police have cautioned the public against spreading misinformation and disinformation, including fake prophecies, that could cause fear, panic, and endanger lives.
The service have urged the public to verify information before sharing it, especially on social media.
Emergency Numbers
The police service have also provided emergency numbers for the public to report any suspicious activities or incidents during the 31st-night celebrations.
Ghanaian blogger, Bongo Ideas claims Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie was bought and paid for by the outgoing Akufo-Addo government.
According to him, the rapper who was once vocal about the nation’s challenges went mute the moment the Akufo-Addo government assumed power in 2017.
A post made by Bongo Ideas on X indicate that Sarkodie enjoyed numerous perks from the Akufo-Addo government, which made it impossible for him to criticize the government regardless of the dire economic challenges in Ghana.
Florence Debrah, popularly known as Maa Adwoa, has recounted the tragic passing of her fiancé, Chief Inspector Godwin Benibah, during their wedding ceremony last Friday at Akyem Anamase near Oda in the Eastern Region.
Speaking to Graphic Online at Anamase, Florence, visibly distraught, revealed that the last time she saw Chief Inspector Benibah alive was on Thursday, December 26, 2024, when he traveled to Koforidua to remind invitees about the wedding.
She said he also continued to the Police Headquarters in Accra to collect a special outfit for the ceremony.
On the day of the wedding, the couple prepared separately at the Anamase Hotel. Florence explained that as she was getting ready to be ushered into the ceremony, she heard wailing.
Upon inquiry, she was informed that the 46-year-old groom had collapsed and was rushed to the Anamase Clinic. Moments later, she was informed that Chief Inspector Benibah had passed away.
The relatives of the deceased transported his body to the Oda Government Hospital for autopsy and preservation.
Florence, 29, described her fiancé as a supportive partner who had opened a shop for her and provided for her needs over their three-year relationship.
She added that his generosity extended to her family, including her mother, Madam Afia Buruwaa, a single parent.
Madam Buruwaa, 46, shared the family’s devastation, describing Chief Inspector Benibah as a breadwinner for the entire family.
She confirmed that the Police Administration had moved his body from the Oda Government Hospital to the Police Hospital in Accra for further procedures.
The tragic loss has left Florence and her family mourning a man they describe as their source of hope and support.

Ghanaian President-elect John Dramani Mahama has responded strongly to remarks by Lawyer Martin Kpebu concerning ex-gratia payments.
This heated exchange has brought the controversial topic back into the national spotlight, with Mahama refusing to apologize for receiving what he was entitled to during his time in office.
During a recent interview, Lawyer Martin Kpebu challenged Mahama to refund the ex-gratia he received, arguing that doing so would set an example for others.
Kpebu’s suggestion was seen by many as a bold move, aimed at highlighting the need for reforms in how public officials are compensated after leaving office.
Mahama, however, was not pleased with the suggestion.
He sharply criticized Kpebu, saying, “You’re being silly by asking me to refund my ex-gratia.”
He went on to explain that the payments were legal and part of the system that had been in place for years.
“I didn’t create the system,” Mahama said. “These are benefits that every public servant is entitled to after service.
Why should I be singled out to return what is lawfully mine?”

“If we want to change the system, let’s do it the right way,” Mahama added.
“I have already said that if I return to power, I will scrap ex-gratia for future public officials.

Legendary Ghanaian musician Abrantie Amakye Dede and some members of his management team were involved in a road accident in the early hours of Sunday, December 29, 2024.
The incident occurred around 1:50 AM between Apam and Winneba while the team was travelling from a successful performance at the Takoradi City Mall to Agona Swedru for their next show.
Amakye Dede and his team were immediately rushed to the Winneba Hospital, where they received first aid treatment from 2:00 AM to 6:00 AM.
Despite the ordeal, Amakye Dede attempted to honour his next scheduled performance in Kumasi later that morning.
However, he was unable to perform due to the strain from the accident. His band stepped in to deliver an impressive performance on his behalf.
The vehicle involved was a V8 SUV carrying Amakye Dede and his management team.
In an official statement, the management expressed regret over the incident and apologised to fans, especially those in Kumasi, becusee he was supposed to perform there but even though he made it to Kumasi he could not perform.
He therefore apologised for any inconvenience caused. “Your understanding, patience, and unwavering support during this difficult time mean everything to us,” the statement read.
They also requested prayers and time for recovery, assuring fans that the team will return stronger.
This accident brings back memories of a tragic event in January 2016, when Amakye Dede’s manager, Isaac Yeboah, died in a road accident at Bonsu Junction in the Eastern Region.
The team was awaiting Amakye’s performance in the area when the incident occurred. While Amakye Dede survived, the loss of his long-time manager was a heavy blow to him and his team.
The management and Amakye Dede have expressed gratitude for the prayers and support they continue to receive from fans.
Afrobeat star Kelvynboy has accused his former mentor, Stonebwoy of using underhand tactics to hinder his progress in the music industry.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the “Down Flat” hitmaker expressed frustration, alleging that Stonebwoy has turned the public against him and stifled his career growth.
“What exactly do you want from me, nigga? You have defamed me, turned majority of Ghanaians against me because you’re a saint and you can never do no wrong. I no dey fit rise to the heights I for dey mainly because of your mafia tactics but Grace dey speak for me regardless,” Kelvynboy wrote.
His remarks come shortly after Stonebwoy suggested in an interview with MC Portfolio that his life was at risk during their time working together under Burniton Music Group (BMG) in 2018. This revelation appears to have sparked Kelvynboy’s recent outburst.
Kelvynboy joined Stonebwoy’s BMG label in 2018, earning recognition for his Afrobeat contributions to Ghana’s music scene. However, tensions between the two surfaced in 2019, leading to the termination of Kelvynboy’s contract. Stonebwoy’s team cited “structural challenges” as the reason for the split, but rumours of disrespect and ungratefulness from Kelvynboy added fuel to the fallout.
The feud has lingered since their professional separation, with occasional social media jabs from both sides. Notably, Kelvynboy was attacked in 2020 during an event in Ashaiman—a location closely associated with Stonebwoy. While Stonebwoy denied involvement, the incident deepened the split.
Despite the animosity, Kelvynboy has made attempts to reconcile over the years, even publicly appealing for forgiveness.
However, the recent accusations suggest that their relationship remains strained.
The tsunamic victory of the NDC in both the Parliamentary and Presidential elections on the 7th of December 2024 still feels surreal.
The officially-gazetted results by the Jean-Mensa -led Electoral Commission gave His Excellency John Dramani Mahama an astonishing 57.7% of the popular votes as against 38.2% garnered by his closest contender and Presidential Candidate of the ruling party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Despite the ongoing legal tussle for some Parliamentary seats, the NDC has so far won 181 seats with the NPP getting a disappointing 89 seats and some 4 seats going to independent Parliamentary candidates.
It is abundantly clear that with or without the disputed Parliamentary seats the NDC has an overwhelming majority in the yet-to-be inaugurated 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
The composition of the 9th Parliament is a stark contrast to the current 8th Parliament with an even number of seats distributed between the two dominant parties; the NDC and the NPP with 137 seats apiece.
The ruling party required the magnanimity and charity of the Independent Member for the Fomena Constituency to constitute a majority in Parliament for government business to progress.
The uniqueness of the Hung Parliament presented Parliament with the arduous task of selecting or electing a speaker with the requisite competence, experience and capacity to steer the legislature to deliver on its mandate of checkmating the two other arms of government as well as representing adequately the constituents who voted to elect the 275 members of parliament.
Four years down the line, the decision to elect the venerable Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has proven to be the best decision that could have been made when parliament was presented with that onerous task of choosing a speaker to take the Chair in Parliament.
The novelty of the 8th Parliament in no uncertain terms demanded a strong-willed, bold, brave and patriotic citizen cast in the mould of the Rt Hon Alban Bagbin to succeed.
Throughout the 4 years of the life of the last parliament, Rt. Hon Alban Bagbin’s principled stance on matters of national interest dominated his rulings and decisions on the floor of the House.
This principled stance saw him incur the displeasure of the leaders of both sides of the House.
Ironically, the man who openly fought to stop an attempt at rigging the polls during the election of Mr Speaker, the Hon Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka was not spared the fairness and firmness of Rt. Hon Alban Bagbin.
Rt. Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin held on steadfastly to the oath that he swore to defend and protect the constitution of Ghana in all that he did as Speaker.
He never swayed from these principles or bent the rules to favour anyone or a group of people. No matter whose ox was gored he would always say it as it is.
It was his experience that guided Parliament so seamlessly in the face of the hydra-headed, often heated and controversial issues that came before the House and required action.
The thorny issue of whether to pass legislation on LGBTQI received maximum and keen attention from Parliament under the direction of Mr Speaker who never shied away from expressing his revulsion for the phenomenon which does not sit well with the cultural and family values of the Ghanaian society.
The Rt Hon Speaker of Parliament stuck out his neck in condemning the fast-emerging phenomenon no matter the occasion or platform to the extent of daring the globally acclaimed superpowers who are supporting, protecting and projecting the adherents of the devilish act of LGBTQI.
At the end of it all, what Parliament needed to do had been done even though the Bill is still sitting on the shelf of the president waiting for assent.
It should also be recalled that the Speaker’s handling of the chaos that erupted in 2022 as to whether to approve or not to approve the 2023 budget brought him across as a leader who knows when to build bridges in the face of heated disagreements and divisiveness.
In disagreeing with the unfortunate decision by his deputy to lead Parliament to overturn his earlier ruling on the matter he outlined copiously and expressly the reasons why Hon Joseph Osei Wusu was wrong and the decision taken, erroneous.
Yet he allowed sleeping dogs to lie in order not to stagnate and frustrate government business any further. He did this much to the chagrin of the NDC Caucus in Parliament and the Party as a whole.
His decision was informed by the need to build consensus in the National interest.
Having served diligently as a member of Parliament for 28 years, Rt Hon Alban Bagbin saw the need to revolutionise the Standing Orders of Parliament to keep them in tandem with modern parliamentary practice to better serve the mandate of gatekeeping and oversight.
These new standing orders received the support of political enthusiasts and experts of parliamentary democracy.
This in no uncertain terms placed the Parliament of Ghana on a higher pedestal capable of discharging its mandate much better.
Knowing too well, the role human resources play in helping the parliamentary service to achieve its core duty and mandate, Mr Speaker led several initiatives to realign the parliamentary staff structure by creating relevant departments and units with clear-cut tasks aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the parliamentary service of Ghana.
Not only were departments and units created, but salaries, emoluments and allowances of the entire Parliamentary Service were enhanced to keep in tandem with the conditions of service for public servants in the country.
This contributes immensely to productivity within the parliamentary service ensuring that desired or expected results are achieved.
Using his experience as one of the longest-serving MPs, Rt Hon Alban Bagbin led Parliament to pass very critical Acts of Parliament to better serve the interest of the Ghanaian society and to further the mandate bestowed on Parliament by the Constitution of the Republic.
Notable among these Bills include the Affirmative Action Bill which has been in the corridors of Parliament since the inauguration of the 4th Parliament.
It took the long-established gender sensitivity of the Speaker to prioritise the Bill by providing the needed support and guidance to have it passed.
It is important to state that the initiative to broaden citizens’ participation in the parliamentary process was given a huge impetus by the parliamentary service under the distinguished leadership of the Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
It would be recalled that Parliament took the time to visit notable Paramount Chiefs and Traditional Areas across the country to brief them on the works of Parliament calling for their involvement in the process to make Parliament much more inclusive and responsive to the needs of the people.
Through the Democracy Cup Initiative, Mr Speaker led Parliament to bring all the relevant stakeholders such as the Executive, the Judiciary, the Police, and NCCE among others with a focus on building a United Country.
This is what a visionary leader does whenever the opportunity to serve is presented to him. This novelty sets Bagbin miles apart from the others who served before him.
Though an unrepentant Akatamansonian, the Rt Hon Alban Bagbin discharged his mandate to the admiration of the masses of Ghana without compromising his membership of the NDC, which sponsored his Speakership Candidature.
Every average NDC member admired his continuous show of support for the ideals of the party hinged on UNITY, STABILITY, PROBITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY.
Testimonies abound across the country on how the Rt Hon Alban Bagbin supported the campaigns of parliamentary candidates and other allied groups geared towards a victory for the NDC.
Mr Speaker contributed generously and massively to oil the wheels of the JM campaign train. In his home region of the Upper West Region, he partnered with all the relevant stakeholders to galvanise support for the NDC in the region.
Following the overwhelming victory of JM and the unprecedented parliamentary majority, the next big decision to be taken before the swearing-in of the President is the election of a speaker of Parliament.
By the dictates of the 1992 Constitution, a Speaker must be elected to superintend the swearing-in of the President before Parliament.
By the outcome of the 2024 elections, any nominee by the NDC Caucus in Parliament would easily pass through as the next speaker.
To this extent, there is a groundswell of support for the retention of Rt Hon Alban Bagbin as the Speaker for the 9th Parliament of The Fourth Republic.
This position has garnered tremendous support and endorsement by various groups and individuals including the Professionals Forum of the NDC led by no mean a person than the acclaimed Ambassador, Lawyer Sam Pee Yalley who minced no words in warning against any decision or consideration by the NDC to nominate any other person for the position of Speaker of the 9th Parliament.
All things being equal, there should have been no calls for doubt as to who should be nominated by the NDC for consideration as the next Speaker of Parliament.
However, we find ourselves in a political terrain where one plus one would not always be two in the considered view of others.
Otherwise, Rt. Hon Alban Bagbin’s spirited commitment to the NDC as a party and his unblemished public service record sets him apart as the de facto Speaker for the 9th Parliament.
His tactful handling of the unique 8th Parliament bears ample testimony to his knowledge, wisdom and experience as far as parliamentary practice is concerned.
He led Parliament to rise above the usual partisan consideration that had always dictated the proceedings of the House.
Furthermore, he rallied his colleagues on both sides of the House to strengthen and build a robust Legislature as a co-equal arm of government that can hold its own against any manipulation by the two other arms of government, the Executive and the Judiciary.
This gave practical meaning and understanding to the role of Parliament as a gatekeeper and checkmate of the other arms as well as all other institutions and agencies.
This cannot be discounted as a huge achievement of the Rt Hon Alban Bagbin.
The Rt Hon Alban Bagbin used his position as Speaker to draw global appeal and Recognition to the Parliament of Ghana.
This global appeal and recognition saw Rt Hon Alban Bagbin elected the President of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (International) with the then Majority Leader, Hon Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu serving on the Executive Council.
The icing on the cake was the hosting of the conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in 2023, in Accra.
His further election to the position of the President of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures for another term of three years, speaks volumes to the strength and character of the Ghanaian Parliament under Speaker Bagbin.
The current outlook of the next Parliament requires a person of proven competencies to take the Chair of Speaker.
Such a person must embody the attributes of statesmanship, patriotism and nationalism.
The next Speaker of Parliament must command the respect of the Majority NDC to avoid the temptation of attempting to bulldoze their way through in Parliament considering the huge parliamentary numbers obtained by the NDC in the just-ended elections.
By his track record and tall achievements first as one of the longest-serving Members of Parliament in the history of Ghana’s Parliamentary Democracy and secondly as the Speaker of the uniquely-constituted hung parliament, no one better fits the position of Speaker of the 9th Parliament than the Venerable Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
It is never in doubt that the Parliament of Ghana, the Republic of Ghana and the National Democratic Congress would all have their mutual interests served exceedingly better under the speakership of Rt Hon Alban Bagbin.
The point must be made quite strongly and vociferously that the NDC Caucus in Parliament must out of necessity nominate and propose Rt Hon Alban Bagbin to take the Chair of Speaker in the 9th Parliament. And Members of Parliament entreated to vote and endorse his candidature when Parliament convenes to elect a Speaker for the 9th Parliament?
The clarion call for the Rt Hon Alban Bagbin to be retained is centred on the need for a much stronger institution of Parliament capable of standing up to the tenets of separation of powers and the rule of law badly needed for an enhanced parliamentary democracy.
The MPs need no further propping that their welfare and that of other staff of the Parliamentary Service has been and would always remain a priority for Rt Hon Alban Bagbin as Speaker.
The people of Ghana need no reminders that the supreme interest of our dear Republic and ourselves would always drive and underlie his rulings and decision-making on parliamentary proceedings as he has demonstrated in the 8th Parliament.
The media must support the calls for. Rt. Hon Alban Bagbin’s retention as Speaker so that he can continue to open up Parliament for the scrutiny of journalists who constitute the fourth estate of the real.
These and many more are the reasons for which the calls for the NDC to nominate Rt. Hon Alban Bagbin as Speaker for the 9th Parliament must be supported and echoed louder to reach the epoch.
The National Treasurer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Charles Dwamena, has asked members of the Bawumia 2024 Campaign Team to render accounts on the funds/ logistics allocated to them during the just-ended campaign.
Dr China, as the National Treasurer is popularly known, made the call in a press release on Monday, December 30, 2024, to correct the facts on a misleading publication on the printing of ID cards for executive members of the party in 2022.
Assuring all party members, he said “Any officer be it an executive or a member of the campaign team who was given funds/resources during the 2024 will be made to account for the allocated funds/resources.”
Rendering proper accounts according to him is non-negotiable and that it is an essential part of understanding what really went wrong in the just-ended campaign.
Touching on the issuance of ID cards for party executive members in 2022, Dr China stated that over 90 per cent of ID cards for the executive members from polling stations to the national level have been printed and distributed with the remaining 10 per cent at the party headquarters yet to be collected by the regional secretariats.
Dr China indicated that the issuance of ID cards to executive members has been very successful and that its success has paved the way for the issuance of ID cards to non-executive members which is currently ongoing in the various constituencies.
He therefore encouraged all non-executive members to get registered.
Clearing the air on the management of such donations, he indicated that such donations go into party coffers and not into individual pockets and that it is impossible for one individual to take funds from the party accounts alone.
He said “…the structures and working procedures of the party make it impossible for the National Treasurer to make unilateral decisions let alone spend funds without approval…” and that “…for every expenditure, approval is given by the National Chairman and the General Secretary after which the National Treasurer sees to proper disbursement of such funds.”
Dr Dwamena in his press release appreciated Dr Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong and other leading party members who have been making donations to support the works of the party.

President-Elect John Mahama has announced plans to return the management of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) to the University of Ghana. This move aims to restore the hospital’s original purpose as envisioned by the late President John Evans Atta Mills.
Speaking during a meeting with the management team of the University of Ghana, Mahama expressed concerns about the facility’s current operation under the Ghana Health Service (GHS). He noted that the hospital is operating at only 40% capacity and highlighted the need for its full utilisation to meet its intended purpose.
“The issue of the University of Ghana Medical Centre was part of Prof Mills’ vision. It was built with the intent that the University of Ghana would set up a management subsidiary to run that hospital. Unfortunately, we left office, and a new government handed it over to the Ghana Health Service, which already has many hospitals under its wings that it cannot manage properly,” Mahama said.
He emphasised the importance of returning to the original management plan to ensure the facility maintains its high standards.
“I am anxious to come back to the original vision where the University of Ghana would manage that hospital. Currently, only 40% of the hospital is operational. We must scale up to 100% so that our people do not continue travelling to South Africa, India, and other countries for medical care we can provide here,” he added.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Amfo, praised Mahama’s commitment to reintegrating UGMC into the University system. She also called for a national conversation about sustainable funding for higher education.
“I am happy to hear of your plans for UGMC and remain at your disposal to discuss how we can properly situate the hospital within the University system as originally intended. Higher education needs to be a significant part of the agenda, and I believe we need a dispassionate discussion regarding sustainable funding for it,” Professor Amfo stated.

Researchers from the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology (Nutrition unit) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology have found that Ghanaian households are facing significant food insecurity, threatening optimal infant development.
The study aimed to investigate how the accessibility and availability of food, dietary patterns, and complementary feeding practices influence growth, vision, and brain health in infants aged 6-23 months old in rural Ghana.
This research, funded by the Association of Commonwealth Universities Sustainable Development Goals Higher Education Grants, was carried out in 9 communities in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti region of Ghana.
The study revealed that about 21% and 37.4% of the infants were stunted and severely acutely malnourished, respectively, while 80% of them suffered from varying forms of anemia.
Again, nearly half of the children were found to be exclusively breastfed, and infants who were not exclusively breastfed had a greater tendency to be stunted.
Further, infants from food-insecure households had a high probability of being stunted. Infants from food-insecure households had a high likelihood of microcephaly, a condition where infants have smaller heads than expected for their ages, and this often leads to abnormal brain development. Food insecurity was also linked to severe acute malnutrition.
The researchers also found that children who consumed diets predominantly composed of tubers, meat, and vegetables had a reduced likelihood of stunting.
“About 29-36% of the infants who participated in the study showed various degrees of poor cognitive development. Early initiation of breastfeeding, continued breastfeeding, and meal frequency showed a positive association with brain development. Cereal, milk, and powdered formulae were associated with good brain health.
“About 80% of the infants reported poor vision, while children who were exclusively breastfed had a reduced likelihood of visual acuity. Consumption of tubers, meat, and vegetables influenced eye health,” added the Principal Investigator, Dr. Mary Amoako.
She emphasized, “Food insecurity in rural communities is high, coupled with high levels of anemia and undernutrition, and the results clearly show that these are having negative impacts on the nutritional and health outcomes of these children. There is a need for relevant stakeholders to reassess specific nutrition intervention programs, such as education on feeding practices, to improve nutritional outcomes in infants and children.”

The results of this study were presented at the just-ended Africa Nutrition and Epidemiology Conference (ANEC) in Cape Coast, Ghana. Mr. Fiifi Amoako Atta Panyin Essiam, the MPhil student on the project, who made this presentation, also reiterated the importance of healthy diets and feeding practices to improve child health and nutrition outcomes.
The researchers are planning a community dissemination exercise for nutrition education in the Bosomtwe district.
