Gov’t releases $1m to resolve scholarship crisis at University of Memphis

0

The Ghana Scholarships Secretariat has announced that the government has made available $1 million to help settle outstanding arrears owed to authorities at the University of Memphis in the United States, amid fears of looming scholarship revocations, evictions, and possible deportations of Ghanaian students.

At a press conference held in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, the Registrar of the Secretariat, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, assured the public that steps are being taken to prevent any negative fallout.

“We are on course with the issues regarding the Ghanaian students at the University of Memphis. Ghanaian students will not be deported, I give you that assurance,” he said.

According to him, the government has already made a partial payment of $400,000 to the university and is preparing to transfer an additional $1 million.

The remaining debt stands at approximately $2.2 million.

“Because the audit is ongoing, we are not paying all. We owe them $3.6 million in total, and we have paid $400,000 so far. We are now processing a $1 million payment.

“The money is currently with the Controller and Accountant General’s Department, and it will move from there to the Bank of Ghana, then to Washington for the final transfer,” Asafo-Agyei explained.

Agri-Impact CEO calls for results-driven approach in agribusiness

0

Chief Executive Officer of Agri-Impact, Daniel Fahene Acquaye, has urged stakeholders in Ghana’s agricultural sector to shift focus from merely discussing the potential of agribusiness to delivering tangible results.

Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV with Bernard Avle on Wednesday, July 30, Mr. Acquaye said that while the benefits of agribusiness are well known, it is time for action and a measurable impact.

“There’s empirical and spiritual evidence telling us what agribusiness can do, and we have said this over and over that agribusiness can create jobs, and agribusiness will transform our economies.

“We come back and say that agribusiness can increase our GDP, and agribusiness will reduce unemployment. Agribusiness is now asking the question: What can you also do for me because I have told you what I can do,” he said.

Mr. Acquaye stressed the need for stakeholders to move beyond discussions of potential and instead demonstrate actual achievements in the sector.

“I want us to move from the situation where we keep talking about the potential without impact. We need to move away from potential. Agri-impact has the potential, yes, we know that, we don’t want that again, we want to say what Agri-Impact has done,” he noted.

His remarks come in the context of renewed national attention on agribusiness as a driver of economic transformation, following the launch of the National Agribusiness Dialogue by the Mahama administration to strengthen value chains and support industrialisation.

Morocco: 19,673 convicts receive royal pardon on Throne Day

0

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has granted royal pardons to 19,673 individuals to mark the 26th anniversary of his accession to the throne, celebrated as Throne Day.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Justice, 2,415 people received standard pardons, while an additional 17,258 convicts benefited from exceptional clemency measures.

Of those granted standard pardons, 2,239 are currently in detention. This includes 16 inmates who received full pardons for their remaining prison terms, 2,218 who had their sentences reduced, and five whose life sentences were commuted to fixed terms.

An additional 176 individuals who are not in custody were also pardoned. Among them, 40 received full pardons or had their remaining sentences cancelled, 12 had prison terms waived but were still required to pay fines, and 111 were pardoned from fines only.

A further 12 individuals had both prison sentences and fines forgiven, while one person received a pardon for both a fine and the remainder of their prison term.

The exceptional clemency initiative applied broader humanitarian criteria to extend relief to a larger group of convicts.

It included 114 prisoners whose life sentences were reduced to fixed terms and 23 inmates whose death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment.

This year’s Throne Day is notable for the scale, symbolism, and humanistic spirit of the royal pardons, underscoring King Mohammed VI’s continued commitment to reform and compassion.

The initiative also seeks to address prison overcrowding, improve incarceration conditions, maintain security within penitentiary institutions, and promote the social reintegration of inmates.

Kwabena Agyepong ‘alarmed’ over exclusion of former polling station executives from electoral college

Kwabena Agyei Agyepong is a presidential hopeful of the New Patriotic Party Kwabena Agyei Agyepong is a presidential hopeful of the New Patriotic Party

Presidential hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has expressed disappointment over the party’s decision to exclude former polling station executives from the electoral college.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on July 29, 2025, Agyepong said the decision has sidelined many loyal party members who have contributed significantly to the NPP’s growth over the years.

“I believe we need to depart from the usual practice. If it were up to me, all former polling station executives would be allowed to vote. Unfortunately, anytime a new MP is elected, he replaces the old executives with their own people,” he decried.

He stressed that several past executives who have worked hard for the party are no longer recognised, despite their sacrifices and dedication.

“Despite the fact that I respect the party’s decision, I feel that there are some past executives who have struggled for the party, and yet they are not recognised by the party anymore,” he stated.

Agyepong, a former General Secretary of the NPP, is part of the first individuals who declared their intention to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

Governor Asiama allays fears of Dollar shortage

0

Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana

Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), has allayed fears of businesses and investors of shortage of Dollars for their daily transactions following recent concerns.

While indicating that the Central Bank has observed some reduction in remittances since April 2025, the Governor noted that for instances where investigations were carried out, it was observed that there was no appropriate documentation by some importers.

He said this at the 125th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press briefing in Accra, on Wednesday, July 20.

“We do not expect a shortage of Dollars at the bank. There have been instances like that, and we moved in to investigate, only to find out that some of those importers did not have the appropriate documentation and that was what was delaying it,” the Governor said.

“What we’ve seen is that certain inflows appear to have reduced, especially remittances since April – we’re investigating that thoroughly,” the Central Bank Chief said, indicating that they were enhancing monitoring mechanisms to shore up foreign exchange inflows.

He stated that Tuesday, July 29, BoG released a notice to banks, Payment and Remittance Service Providers (PRSPs), and Money Transfer Operators (MTOs) to ensure foreign exchange properly entered the Ghanaian financial system.

He said that the Bank was following up with certain data requirements from all the players in the remittance space, which would increase inflows, and gave an assurance, saying, “… and whatever pressures you might be seeing locally will be contained.”

He also announced a stricter oversight of banks’ nostro accounts [foreign currency accounts held abroad that banks use to finance international trade] to prevent unauthorised capital flight and make Ghana’s foreign exchange earnings remain within the domestic financial system.

“From now on, we will be monitoring transactions in the nostro balances of banks, all in an attempt to make sure that we don’t have offshoring going on and that all Ghana foreign exchange that’s earned from abroad is made available to the system to fund our imports and economic activities,” Governor Asiama stated.

The Governor explained that contrary to the concerns of a seeming shortage of Dollars at banks, businesses are rather financed through nostro accounts rather than requiring physical dollar deposits from importers to facilitate trade payments.

“Banks finance trade using their nostro account – it is out of it that they pay for imports – you don’t have to carry US Dollars in Accra to pay for your imports, banks are expected to fund that for you,” he stated.

The enhanced monitoring measures, he said were expected to further stabilise the Cedi, which has appreciated by 40.7 per cent against the Dollar, 31.2 per cent against the Pound Sterling, and 24.2 per cent against the Euro.

“Here we go” – Fabrizio Romano makes €40m+ Chelsea transfer official

0

This morning, well connected Chelsea reporter Ben Jacobs wrote that the Blues were 24 to 48 hours away from sealing a deal for Jorrel Hato.

Well, it’s taken even less time than that – Fabrizio Romano has swooped in with a late night “here we go,” meaning the deal is done and just needs to be announced.

Romano insists that the personal terms were already agreed “ten days ago,” and that they cover a contract until June 2032 with an option for another year. It’s assumed this is a unilateral club option.

Chelsea move fast to secure their top option

The deal has really gone rather smoothly. The personal terms were sorted almost instantly, and even this negotiation over his price only seemed to take a week or so. Ajax wanted €50m, we wanted to pay €40m – in the end, as always, you meet somewhere in the middle with bonuses and add-ons being the real variables in the equation.

It’s more impressive work from the transfer team, who have ticked off another position where depth and upgrades were needed.

Hato ready, willing and able to be a Veiga upgrade

Renato Veiga shortly after signing for Chelsea.

It’s going to be really interesting to see how Hato fits in at Chelsea. A year ago we were signing Renato Veiga, unsure how he would be used. As it turned out, despite his centre back pedigree (which is ultimately what has led him to want to leave to play more in that position) the club saw him as a perfect left sided defender option – a full back, but only in a system like the one Chelsea are using under Enzo Maresca.

Hato can play the same role, and take the same position in the squad – he just appears to be an upgrade on Veiga in terms of his ceiling.

Lands Ministry denies cancellation of $1.2bn bauxite deal awarded to Rocksure International

0

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has dismissed reports alleging the cancellation of a $1.2 billion bauxite lease awarded to Rocksure International in favour of foreign partners, calling the claims false, baseless, and misleading.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 30, the Ministry clarified that there was never a valid lease with Rocksure International to begin with.

It explained that although the company was associated with a proposed bauxite agreement, the lease was never ratified by Ghana’s 8th Parliament before its dissolution in January 2025.

Referencing a 2019 Supreme Court ruling, the Ministry stressed that any mining lease not ratified by Parliament is legally void. “

A cancellation cannot exist where there was no valid lease,” the statement emphasised.

The Ministry also rubbished the $1.2 billion valuation of the bauxite deposit that has been widely circulated, describing it as “unsubstantiated and grossly misleading.”

According to the statement, no official valuation has confirmed that figure, suggesting the claim is a deliberate distortion meant to stir public discontent.

Further clarifying the facts, the Ministry outlined the mandate of the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC), which was established by law to lead the development of Ghana’s bauxite resources.

GIADEC is tasked with bringing in strategic investors and managing projects like the Western Railway Network, Takoradi Port Expansion, an alumina refinery, an aluminium smelter, and the retrofitting of VALCO for improved efficiency.

The Ministry concluded by reaffirming that all partnerships being explored are aligned with GIADEC’s legal mandate and Ghana’s broader vision to build an integrated aluminium industry.

‘Why has every artiste you’ve worked with died?’ – Kumchacha to Roman Fada

0

Controversial Ghanaian preacher Prophet Nicholas Osei, popularly known as Prophet Kumchacha Controversial Ghanaian preacher Prophet Nicholas Osei, popularly known as Prophet Kumchacha

Controversial Ghanaian preacher Prophet Nicholas Osei, popularly known as Prophet Kumchacha caused some stir on Adom FM’s “Work and Happiness” show on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, after he dropped a bombshell during his tribute to the late music legend Daddy Lumba.

While speaking about the sad passing of Daddy Lumba, Prophet Kumchacha decided to ask Roman Fada, popular radio presenter and long-time manager of the late musician, to explain why all the artists he has worked with have mysteriously died.

According to the outspoken man of God, he has known Roman Fada, who currently works with Atinka FM, for over two decades, and during that time, every artiste he has personally seen Fada manage or associate with has passed away.

He added that back in Kumasi, there were two musicians who died after working with him.

Kumchacha further claimed that all these tragic cases, the families of the deceased artists and the spouse were left with confusion and unresolved issues.

The prophet added a political twist by bringing up the late Akua Donkor, the founder of the Ghana Freedom Party.

According to Kumchacha, Akua Donkor also died under strange circumstances shortly after announcing Roman Fada as her running mate ahead of the 2024 general elections.

“Why has every artiste you’ve worked with died?” he asked Roma Fada.

Despite multiple attempts by the show’s host to steer the conversation back to a respectful tribute for Daddy Lumba, Kumchacha remained resolute.

Salesgirl jailed 10 years for concealing cocaine in underwear

0

An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a 28-year-old salesgirl to 10 years’ imprisonment for possessing cocaine concealed in her underwear.

Sumaiya Amidu was found guilty of unlawful possession of narcotic drugs after trial.

The court, presided over by Isaac Addo, also imposed a fine of GHC120,000.

In default, she will serve an additional three years.

Amidu was arrested on March 15, 2022, at Abbosey Okai Sabon Zongo following intelligence gathered by officers of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit, CID Headquarters.

According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Seth Frimpong, Amidu was picked up at a cosmetic store where a search revealed 165 gold foil wraps of cocaine, weighing 7.1940 grammes, concealed in her underwear.

In her caution statement, Amidu admitted the drugs were found on her but claimed they were handed to her by one Dauda to keep.

She, however, refused to assist the police in locating him.

Forensic analysis confirmed the substance as cocaine, leading to her prosecution and subsequent conviction.

MoFA urges public to disregard fake grant advertisement targeting SMEs

Ministry of Food and Agriculture Ministry of Food and Agriculture

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture has warned the public against a fraudulent online scheme targeting Small and Medium-scale Enterprises (SME) agri-businesses with a fake grant registration.

In a statement issued on Tuesday July 29, 2025, the Ministry said the publication, circulating on social media, aimed to deceive unsuspecting individuals and businesses and should be ignored.

“The publications seek to lobby SMEs to register with an entity known as Global Farmers Association (GFA) located at Nairobi, Kenya to obtain a certificate of accreditation under a non-existing Agricultural SMEs Grant Initiative 2025,” the statement read.

“The Website, email address and contacts provided by the publications have no connection whatsoever with this Ministry.

“By this statement, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture wishes to inform the general public that the said SMEs grant initiative 2025 is fake and fraudulent,” the statement said.

The Ministry cautioned against any business dealings with entities claiming to offer the purported grant and reaffirmed its role as the lead agency responsible for agricultural policy and strategy.

Meanwhile, the Ministry recently received 2,000 metric tons of fertiliser from the Kingdom of Morocco to support national agricultural productivity.

John Dumelo, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, speaking on behalf of the sector Minister, Eric Opoku, described the donation as a “timely and strategic intervention.”

“This donation is not just a consignment of fertilizer; it is a profound symbol of the strong and enduring relationship between our two nations,” he stated, reaffirming the government’s commitment to agricultural transformation.

Angola’s petrol protest death toll rises as medics overwhelmed

0

File photo of the protest File photo of the protest

At least 22 people, including a police officer, have been killed and 200 others injured in protests against a rise in the price of fuel that began on Monday, Interior Minister Manuel Homem has said.

Police say more than 1,200 people have also been arrested in what began as a strike by taxi drivers against the price hike and then escalated into one of the most widespread and disruptive waves of protest the country has seen in recent years.

Businesses, including major supermarkets, remain closed and many people have opted to stay at home.

Doctors at public hospitals in the capital, Luanda – who asked not to be named – told the BBC emergency services had been overwhelmed over the last 24 hours.

On Monday and Tuesday sporadic gunfire was heard across the city.

“We have received many protesters with serious injuries, including multiple traumas. Sadly, some have died. We fear the death toll may be higher than the official figures suggest,” one doctor said.

Homem issued his statement after a cabinet meeting chaired by President João Lourenço on Wednesday.

“In the past two days, we have witnessed actions that amount to acts of vandalism and endanger public security in the provinces of Luanda, Huambo, Benguela and Huíla. However, we want to inform citizens that the overall public security situation in the country remains stable,” the minister said.

Many buildings had been looted or destroyed across the country, including supermarkets, shops and banks, he added.

Ambulances, buses and private vehicles have also been damaged during the unrest.

“The acts carried out by the protesters, worsened by the presence of infiltrators with criminal intentions, show that the phenomenon has gone beyond a mere demand and now represents a threat to public order,” the presidency said in a post on Facebook on Wednesday.

Earlier President Lourenço had downplayed concerns over the decision to raise the price of diesel by more than 33%. It was introduced in early July as part of plans to remove fuel subsidies in the oil-rich nation.

He told CNN Portugal the protesters were using petrol prices as a pretext to undermine the government.

The taxi unions – which called a three-day strike – have distanced themselves from the looting and destruction, stating they do not support such actions.

On Tuesday night, a flight from Frankfurt to Luanda was cancelled. A British passenger told the BBC they were told it was due to the “political situation” in Angola.

A Lufthansa spokesperson confirmed the cancellation, saying “safety and security for our passengers and crew has top priority”.

Several consulates and embassies have issued security warnings to foreign nationals. The US embassy advised “US citizens to remain vigilant and limit non-essential movement within Luanda”.

In the capital, long queues have formed at petrol stations as citizens try to refuel and stock up on essential goods.

Police officers are deployed across the city and there are also many military and police vehicles on the streets.

Opposition coalition the Patriotic United Front (FPU) said it stood in solidarity with “all layers of society currently experiencing the effects of the severe economic and social crisis Angola is facing”.

It added this “was a result of public policies disconnected from our country’s reality, poor governance, corruption and the government’s lack of human sensitivity”.

However, the FPU also said it “strongly condemned” the acts of destruction of public and private property carried out by protesters.

The rise in petrol prices has pushed up fares for urban Angolans who rely on taxis and has also driven up the price of staple foods and other basics – as suppliers who transport those goods by road are passing on their additional costs to consumers.

Former Inspector-General of Police Dr George Akuffo Dampare, who has been out of the public view since leaving office, was last Sunday July 27, 2025, seen with the newly installed Odau Twafohene Baffour Osei Afrifa during the commissioning of a bridge.

The bridge was donated to the people of Juaso, in the Asante Akyem District of the Ashanti Region, by the subchief.

The charismatic and popular former Police Chief was seen beaming with smiles while exchanging pleasantries with members of the Juaso community who rushed in turns to take photographs with him.

The bridge which was donated by Baffour Osei Afrifa is a major transit point for many schoolchildren and some residents in some parts of the Juaso community.

Dr Dampare received thunderous applause from the congregation of the Juaso St Andrew Roman Church when he was introduced.

He was again given a standing ovation when HRH Baffour Osei Afrifa thanked him for his support.

“I am especially grateful to my older brother and friend, IGP George Akuffo Dampare for his continuous support and immense encouragement in bringing this project to life” Baffour Afrifa said with rapturous applause.

The donation forms part of the broader effort by the Odau Twafohene to develop the Juaso community where he hails from.

Last year, he donated an 8-unit classroom fully installed with air conditioning and state of the art technology to enable smart teaching and learning for the St Andrew Roman Primary School in Juaso.

Nigerian nurses strike for pay and staffing as talks collapse

0

Nurses in Nigeria’s public hospitals began a seven-day “warning” strike on Wednesday, demanding improved remuneration, better working conditions and increased recruitment, after a two-week ultimatum to the government expired without resolution.

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) warned that if their demands are not met by next week, the union will embark on an indefinite strike, the first in over two decades.

“We hope that before the seventh day, we’ll have attention and a positive response from the federal government,” said Christianah Adeboboye, head of the nurses’ and midwives’ union in Lagos.

A meeting on Tuesday between the union and a government delegation led by Labour Minister Muhammad Dingyadi ended in a stalemate.

“When you look at the composition of the meeting, it already shows that no outcome could have been gotten out of that meeting,” said Toba Odumosu, union secretary in Lagos, citing the absence of Health Minister Ali Pate as a critical gap.

The impasse highlights the growing divide between healthcare workers and the government, leaving patients vulnerable as hospitals prepare for further disruptions.

The union is advocating for the recruitment of more nurses, citing a sharp decline in personnel, as over 42,000 nurses have left Nigeria for jobs abroad in the past three years, according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

Citizen Eye Ghana tips Julius Debrah as most strategic NDC candidate for 2028

0

Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff

Civil society group Citizen Eye Ghana has named Julius Debrah as the most strategic and unifying choice for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the party’s 2028 presidential primary.

In a detailed report released Tuesday, July 30, 2025, Citizen Eye Ghana assessed potential contenders across four key dimensions: regional balance, age and energy, executive governance experience, and leadership qualities.

The group concluded that Debrah’s background and political profile align closely with the needs of the party and the electorate.

The report notes that Ghanaian voters have historically favored regional diversity in presidential leadership.

With the current president from the Northern Region, analysts suggest that a southern candidate could offer the NDC stronger nationwide appeal in 2028.

“While northern contenders like Hon. Haruna Iddrisu are respected, the NDC must be mindful of maintaining national balance, Julius Debrah hailing from the Eastern Region, brings that strategic geographical advantage,” the report stated.

According to the report, electoral trends since the beginning of Ghana’s Fourth Republic reveal a voter preference for candidates who combine maturity with vitality.

At 59, Debrah is seen as occupying the “sweet spot” between youthful dynamism and seasoned leadership.

Comparisons in the report highlight the age gap between Debrah and other potential contenders, such as the 68-year-old NDC Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, and the relatively younger Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who is 44 but seen as lacking extensive executive experience.

“His experience as Chief of Staff where he coordinated government operations and advised the presidency gives him an edge in understanding the complexities of national governance. He is not a candidate who needs on-the-job training,” it noted.

Per the report, Debrah’s leadership approach also received praise as stakeholders interviewed described him as humble, loyal, and widely respected within both the grassroots and upper ranks of the NDC.

Citizen Eye Ghana highlighted his reputation for quiet competence and servant leadership as a rare asset in Ghanaian politics.

“Debrah embodies ethical and inclusive leadership qualities Ghanaians increasingly demand. His vision emphasises development, youth empowerment, and public service rooted in integrity.”

Citizen Eye Ghana concluded its findings with a direct appeal to the NDC’s leadership and delegates, urging them to make an “evidence-based and forward-looking” choice as the party prepares for 2028.

“In a time of political uncertainty and governance fatigue, the NDC must prioritize unity, competence, and credibility. Julius Debrah represents more than a candidacy. He symbolizes a path to national renewal,” the group emphasised.

Buipe Inland Port to be fully operationalized

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

The Buipe Inland Port in the Savannah Region will soon be fully operationalized and integrated into the national transportation strategy, President John Dramani Mahama, has announced.

This, the President said would go a long way to enhance logistics and position the Savannah Region as a gateway to the Sahel, boosting regional trade and reducing transport costs.

The President made a disclosure during a courtesy call on him by the Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, the Overlord of Gonjaland at the Presidency in Accra.

The Yagbonwura’s historic visit to the Presidency was to congratulate President Mahama on his re-election in the December 7, 2024, general elections.

President Mahama together with Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang received the Yagbonwura and his entourage of Paramount Chiefs at the forecourt of the Presidency.

The President said the Savannah region, together with the other newly created regions, would benefit from sports stadia for the development of youthful sporting talents.

“Indeed, we’ve asked them to start looking for the land for the Savannah Regional Sports Stadium. It will have all the facilities,” the President said.

“A region youth employment plan, region-specific youth employment plan, is going to be launched aligned with the national 24-Hour Economy.”

President Mahama said skills training centres would be established in Savannah and youth cooperatives would be supported to engage in agribusiness.

He said the Government would extend rural electrification and solar energy solutions to deprive communities such as Kodjokura, Kpalbe, and Wasipe, all in the Savannah region.

“No child should study in darkness and no clinic should operate without power,” he said.

“These are not just promises, they are policy commitments grounded in the express needs of our people and supported by practical development framework.”

The President reiterated that none of these aspirations could be achieved without the active partnership of traditional authorities.

“I’ve always maintained that Ghana’s progress is most suitable when it includes our chiefs and our people, our elders, and community leaders.

“We will not leave you out as spectators, but as co-architects,” he said.

Francis Amuzu draws interest from Saudi Arabia after mixed spell at Gremio

Ghanaian-born winger, France Amuzu (R) Ghanaian-born winger, France Amuzu (R)

Francis Amuzu’s time at Gremio may be nearing its end just months after arriving from Belgian giants RSC Anderlecht.

The Ghanaian-born winger, who joined during the winter window, has struggled to make a lasting impact in Brazil’s topflight.

Known for his pace and direct style, Amuzu featured in 19 matches, netting one goal and assisting another.

While his speed remains a threat, a familiar foe from his Anderlecht days, injuries, has again disrupted his rhythm.

Now, whispers of a summer exit are growing louder. Brazilian media reports suggest Gremio may be open to parting ways with the 24-year-old, who is under contract until mid-2026.

One club showing early interest is Al-Riyadh from Saudi Arabia. Talks have reportedly begun, but so far, no formal offer has been placed.

Francis Amuzu’s current market value stands at €4 million, according to Transfermarkt.

A new chapter for Amuzu might be imminent if the proper deal materialises, since the Saudi Pro League is increasing its international signings.

EAI commends government’s swift evacuation of students amid Bawku-related violence

Government has ordered for the evacuation of students from conflict-prone areas Government has ordered for the evacuation of students from conflict-prone areas

The Educate Africa Institute (EAI) has lauded the Government of Ghana for its prompt response in evacuating students from conflict-prone areas in the wake of deadly violence linked to the protracted Bawku conflict.

In a statement issued by its Executive Director, William Boadi, the education-focused think tank expressed deep sorrow over the recent attack at Nalerigu Senior High School, which claimed the lives of two students.

Boadi extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and condemned the incident as a “senseless act of violence.”

“Schools must remain safe havens for learning and development, not targets of ethnic conflict or political violence,” the statement stressed.

The government, through the Ministry of Education and national security agencies, swiftly initiated a coordinated evacuation exercise for students in high-risk areas, including Bawku, Nalerigu, and surrounding communities.

Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed that the move was designed to safeguard the lives of vulnerable students and educators amid the escalating tensions.

EAI described the intervention as both timely and critical, emphasising its importance in preventing further casualties and psychological trauma among young learners.

The Institute called on traditional authorities, political leaders, civil society organizations, and local communities to unite in pursuit of sustainable peace and reconciliation in the region. “Education must not be a casualty of conflict,” Boadi asserted.

In addition, EAI urged the government and humanitarian partners to prioritize psychosocial support for affected students and staff, to facilitate their safe reintegration into academic environments once calm is restored.

“Let us protect education, preserve life, and promote peace.”

Use your talents to shape the present, future – Dumelo urges GIMPA graduates

John Setor Dumelo, the Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture John Setor Dumelo, the Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture

John Setor Dumelo, the Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, has urged graduates of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) to utilise their talents to shape the present and future of Ghana’s development.

He said the country’s emerging human resource stood at a critical intersection, not merely inheriting Ghana’s legacy, but serving as the bridge between its current status and future growth.

Dumelo, also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon, and an alumnus of GIMPA, made the call in Accra at the July session of the 25th Congregation of the Institute as the Guest Speaker.

Speaking on the theme: “From Heritage to Creative Futures: Inspiring Development through Artistic Education and Enterprise,” he charged the graduates to apply their training to enhance development, whether their future lay in public governance, law, technology, or the creative economy.

“I know first-hand the power of a GIMPA education, not only in shaping capable professionals but also in cultivating visionary thinkers who can bridge policy and practice, theory and innovation, tradition and transformation,” Dumelo said.

He envisioned a Ghana where fashion designers would become global ambassadors of Ghanaian culture, exporting not just garments, but stories woven in kente and dyed in tradition.

“…and a future where the creative economy is not just a sideshow but a pillar of national development,” he said.

Dumelo called for a Ghana where digital artists, filmmakers, and musicians owned their intellectual property, had access to funding, and were protected by a robust legal framework shaped by the country’s emerging legal minds.

“Let’s build a Ghana where government policy actively invests in artistic education as a tool for national identity, youth employment, tourism growth, and international recognition,” he said.

The Deputy Minister, drawing from his experience in the entertainment industry, said Ghana lacked not talent, but systems, support, and structural training.

He urged the graduates to step boldly into the creative frontier and called on GIMPA to continue leading not only in governance and business but also in artistic innovation and creative enterprise.

Professor Yaw Agyeman Badu, Chair of the GIMPA Governing Council, said Ghana’s cultural heritage, especially in the performing arts and creative industries, was an invaluable national asset.

He said it would take deliberate investment and academic engagement to transform that heritage into sustainable economic and social enterprise.

“Whether we operate within the artistic realm or beyond, the message remains clear — our heritage informs our attention, and education fuels innovation,” Prof Badu said.

“That legacy is a call to action, not just for creatives, but for scholars, policymakers, and entrepreneurs to unite in shaping a prosperous, inclusive Ghana.”

Degrees conferred during the ceremony included Bachelor of Science and master’s degrees from the GIMPA Business School, Bachelor of Laws (LLB), and LLM in Dispute Resolution, Law and Practice, and Criminal Law and Justice from the GIMPA Law School.

Other graduates received Bachelor of Science, Executive Masters, Master’s, and MPhil degrees from the School of Public Service and Governance and the School of Technology and Social Sciences.

Mohammed Salisu back on La Liga radar as Real Sociedad makes move

AS Monaco centre-back, Mohammed Salisu AS Monaco centre-back, Mohammed Salisu

Mohammed Salisu may be on the move again, with Real Sociedad expressing interest in the Ghanaian defender.

The club, led by sporting director Erik Bretos, is eyeing Salisu as a possible reinforcement for their backline.

The AS Monaco centre-back, once a standout at Real Valladolid and Southampton, fits the mold of what coach Sergio Francisco wants to add to his squad.

Transfer expert Matteo Moretto shared the news with Marca, confirming that Sociedad have asked Monaco about Salisu’s availability.

However, the deal won’t be easy. The player is valued at €12 million, and with Monaco having paid €15 million just two seasons ago, they’re unlikely to let him go cheaply.

Salisu’s recent inactivity adds complexity. He hasn’t played regular football since February. After starting the season strong, a thigh injury sidelined him in October.

His minutes have dwindled since, with only two late substitute appearances after February 1.

He also didn’t feature in Monaco’s most recent preseason match, even as other squad players got minutes.

GAF deploys 400 additional troops to Bawku under Operation Maidabuuri II

In a decisive move to curb escalating violence and insecurity in Bawku, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have deployed 400 additional troops to the area under the ongoing security initiative, Operation Maidabuuri II.

The reinforcements, drawn from the Northern, Southern, and Central Commands, were officially dispatched on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.

The deployment underscores the government’s renewed commitment to restoring law and order in the conflict-affected municipality.

Bawku has been plagued by periodic violence fueled by entrenched ethnic tensions and criminal activity.

Operation Maidabuuri II, already operational in the region, seeks to stabilise the situation by enhancing military presence, bolstering intelligence-gathering, and fostering collaboration with local communities.

During a briefing ahead of the deployment, the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, urged the troops to uphold discipline, professionalism, and integrity in the execution of their duties.

“You are representing not just the Ghana Armed Forces but the entire nation,” he stated.

“There will be rigorous monitoring to ensure high operational standards are maintained and the mission is not compromised.”

The GAF has reiterated that the operation will go beyond military enforcement to include community engagement and trust-building, which are seen as essential components in achieving lasting peace in Bawku.

‘Is Wontumi not human?’ – Former Subin MP ‘fires’ AG over discontinuation of uniBank case

Eugene Boakye Antwi is the former Subin MP Eugene Boakye Antwi is the former Subin MP

The former Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has strongly expressed his displeasure and criticism over the Attorney General’s decision to drop charges against accused individuals in the uniBank case.

Appearing on the July 29, 2025, edition of Kokrokoo on Peace FM, the former lawmaker accused the Attorney General of dropping charges against individuals who are affiliated with his political party.

He questioned why the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Chairman Wontumi, was detained without charges, while others against whom incriminating evidence exists have been let off the hook and allowed to walk free.

“… Is Wontumi not human? You detained him without charges, yet those for whom evidence shows clear involvement in a crime have been set free,” he questioned.

According to him, the Attorney General should have allowed the uniBank case to be determined by a court of competent jurisdiction and given its verdict, rather than dropping the charges after recovering 60% of the assets.

Boakye Antwi further raised concerns about the dangerous precedent that dropping high-profile criminal cases could set for the country.

He warned that such actions risk eroding public trust and sending a message that individuals can embezzle state funds without facing consequences.

“If we drop all high-profile cases in the country, people’s trust in the state takes a hit even among NDC supporters. We should allow for cases to be determined by courts and not by the Attorney General. The persons involved are his party members, when he is busily pursuing others who are non-party members. Won’t another party also come to discontinue what he started? We as politicians must be careful and not try to defend what is indefensible,” he said.

“We should have allowed for a court to try the case and determine the verdict. With what has happened, it sends a signal to others that they can come and misappropriate state funds, return a percentage to the state and walk free. Accountability is not revenge but a responsibility and it must be consistent. Ghanaians don’t want arrests but answers,” he added.

The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, on Wednesday July 30, 2025.

The meeting, held at the Ministry’s offices, focused on exploring collaborative opportunities between the two institutions to create jobs and empower Ghana’s youth through football.

Okraku was accompanied by Executive Council Members Samuel Aboabire and Eugene Nobel Noel, and the FA’s Business Development Manager, Janice Odonkor.

The GFA President underscored the natural synergy between football and employment, describing the sport as a vehicle for youth development, job creation, and social mobility.

He noted football’s broad reach in communities and its ability to engage and empower young people.

“For us in football, we offer opportunities to young boys and girls, using our vast scouting network to identify, nurture and promote talent in every corner of our dear country,” he said

Dr Pelpuo welcomed the delegation and praised the initiative, expressing the Ministry’s readiness to work with the GFA to develop innovative, sport-based employment programmes.

Both parties are expected to identify actionable areas of cooperation to promote youth empowerment through the football value chain.

Tanzania’s ban on foreigners operating small businesses sparks Kenyan backlash

Tanzania's trade minister Selemani Jafo said the move was intended to safeguard local livelihoods Tanzania’s trade minister Selemani Jafo said the move was intended to safeguard local livelihoods

Tanzania has barred foreign nationals from owning and operating mainly small-scale businesses, sparking concern and a backlash from neighbouring Kenya.

The new directive prohibits them from 15 sectors including mobile money transfers, tour guiding, small-scale mining, on-farm crop buying, beauty salons, curio shops and establishing radio and TV operations.

Trade minister Selemani Jafo explained that foreigners had increasingly become involved in the informal sector and areas better filled by Tanzanians.

Locally the move has generally been welcomed amid growing concerns that foreigners, including Chinese nationals, have been encroaching on smaller trades.

Last year, traders at Dar es Salaam’s bustling Kariakoo shopping district went on strike to protest against aggressive taxation and unfair competition from Chinese traders.

“We’ve welcomed this decision because it protects the livelihoods of Tanzanian traders,” Severine Mushi, the head of Kariakoo traders’ association, told the Citizen newspaper.

Violators risk fines, six months in jail and loss of visas and work permits.

Jafo added that he hoped the ban, announced on Monday, would also encourage foreigners to invest in large-scale businesses.

But the move has been met with anger in Kenya, with some arguing that it violates East African Community (EAC) agreements that guarantee free movement of people and trade among its eight member states.

Kenyan Trade minister Lee Kinyanjui called for the ban to be removed, saying it would “hurt” both Kenya’s and Tanzania’s economies.

“It is therefore critical, in the spirit of EAC, that bilateral engagements be held to resolve these issues,” Kinyanjui wrote in a statement on Wednesday.

National Assembly Trade Committee chairman Bernard Shinali warned the move could trigger reciprocal restrictions, Kenya’s Daily Nation reported.

“There are many Tanzanians working in our mining sites too,” the newspaper quoted him as saying.

“It is clear that Tanzanians have gone too far and we should cut links with them.”

Veteran Kenyan hotelier Mohammed Hersi also questioned Tanzania’s move to restrict occupations for foreigners.

“Sometimes, it is important to focus on the bigger picture… Protectionism will never help a country to thrive,” he said on X.

Many other Kenyans have also raised concern on social media, describing Tanzania’s policy move as a big challenge to regional integration.

“Tanzanians are doing all manner of small businesses in Kenya without any hindrance. It’s clear Tanzania has never been serious in making the EAC work,” one person posted on X.

Tanzania and Kenya have experienced periodic political and economic tensions.

Tanzania’s implementation of protective tariffs and import bans has in the past drawn criticism from its regional partners.

In May, Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi said that about 250,000 Kenyans lived, worked or did business in Tanzania, something he noted as he emphasised the need to preserve cordial relations.

He was addressing diplomatic tensions surrounding Tanzania’s treatment of Kenyans who had gone to Dar es Salaam to observe the treason trial of opposition leader Tundu Lissu.

Several of them were deported while prominent Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi, along with Ugandan activist Agather Atuhaire, went missing and were later reported to have been tortured and sexually mistreated.

Tanzania is due to hold general elections in October, with the ruling CCM party expected to retain power.

Asawase Shootings: Same gunman linked to both attacks

According to the police, they may soon apprehend the culprits based on the intelligence they have. According to the police, they may soon apprehend the culprits based on the intelligence they have.

The Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police, DSP Godwin Ahianyo, has disclosed that police intelligence gathered so far indicates the shooter who assassinated the Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region is believed to be the same individual responsible for the killing of another person.

Speaking on JoyNews on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, DSP Ahianyo said that although no arrests have been made yet, they may soon apprehend the culprits based on the intelligence they have.

He also said that the security situation in Asawase has been strengthened to ensure people’s safety.

“So far, I must say that we have not made any arrest in respect of the unfortunate shooting incident that happened a couple of days ago in the Asawase area. But I must say security is very tense and our men are on the ground ensuring that there is absolute peace and safety within the Asawase community,” he said.

DSP Ahianyo continued, “Our intel tells us that the individual that shot the chief on Wednesday is the same person who perpetrated the same crime on Friday, so we are on the heels of that individual and gathering our intel.

“I’m sure that pretty soon, we will be able to get those perpetrators and bring them to justice. Per our analysis we’ve done so far and what we have gathered, we suspect that it’s one particular person who actually shot those two victims.”

DSP Ahianyo acknowledged that the arrest of the perpetrators may take time but assured the public of the police’s readiness and commitment to apprehending the suspects and bringing them to justice.

“Our PID men are on the ground picking intel. Crimes, when they are committed, it takes a matter of time to be able to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice. I can assure the good people of Kumasi and Asawase and its enclave that our men are working assiduously to be able to get these persons who perpetrated these heinous crimes,” he assured.

On July 22, 2025, the Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region and Chief of the Kadi Divisional Area in Binduri, Abdul-Malik Azenbe, was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen.

According to eyewitnesses, two men arrived on a motorbike at the chief’s residence near the Asawase F-Line Community Centre at about 8:40 p.m.

One of the assailants, armed with an AK-47 rifle, reportedly opened fire on the chief before both men fled the scene.

On Friday, July 25, 2025, another man was shot dead by two unknown assailants on a motorbike at Asawase. He is reported to have been shot twice killing him instantly.

‘We will win Akwatia by-election’

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, says he is optimistic that the party will emerge victorious in the forthcoming Akwatia by-election.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, Gbande attributed his confidence to the NDC’s internal cohesion, effective leadership, and unwavering commitment to democratic principles.

In the interview, Gbande criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing it of attempting to impose a candidate on the constituents of Akwatia.

He likened the party’s approach to the ceremonial outdooring of chiefs, suggesting that it lacked the hallmarks of a truly democratic process.

“Even in the Akwatia constituency, all is not well with the NPP,” Gbande asserted.

“They have gone in there and decorated a particular candidate as if that is how they outdoor chiefs, imposing him on the party. We will not go down that path.”

Gbande described the NDC as a “strong and competent” political force deeply committed to internal democracy.

He stated that the party’s strategy for the upcoming by-election would be shaped by principles of good governance, meaningful political engagement, and a solid track record of credibility.

“We believe that, for all intents and purposes, we are going to win the Akwatia election on the basis of quality politicking, good governance, and our track record,” he said confidently.

Gbande further emphasised the importance of open internal competition within the NDC, asserting that every qualified aspirant should be given a fair opportunity to contest for the party’s slot in the by-election.

According to him, this inclusive approach ensures that the eventual candidate genuinely reflects the aspirations of the party’s grassroots base.

“That is why we believe the only way to arrive at a candidate suitable for the by-election is to allow each and every one an opportunity to contest, so that internally, the party will decide,” Gbande was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Evans Nimako, Director of Elections for the NPP, has rejected assertions that Solomon Kwame Asumadu is being imposed on both the party and the constituents of Akwatia as their parliamentary candidate.

Nimako dismissed the claims and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to a fair and transparent selection process.

GAF begins probe into soldier’s conduct following JoyNews journalist assault

0

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has launched investigations into the conduct of some of its personnel following an incident of assault on a JoyNews team and an eyewitness during the demolition of a facility around Spintex in Accra on July 30.

In a statement issued by the Department of Public Relations at its General Headquarters in Burma Camp, the Armed Forces said the probe was initiated in line with a directive from the Presidency.

According to the GAF, the investigation seeks to address what it described as the “inappropriate conduct” of certain soldiers during an encounter with members of the media.

“The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to assure the general public that the investigations will be thorough and those found culpable will be dealt with accordingly,” the statement read.

The GAF reiterated its commitment to professionalism, noting that it is doing everything possible to maintain its high standards of conduct.

Background

Armed military officers on Wednesday, July 30, obstructed JoyNews reporter Carlos Carlony from covering a demolition exercise at Spintex in Accra and physically assaulted a civilian who was speaking to the journalist at the scene.

At the time of filing this report, Mr Carlony had been taken into custody by operatives from the National Security, and his mobile phone confiscated.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News after his release, Mr Carlony narrated that the incident started while he was interviewing an eyewitness at the scene.

“We got there before the military arrived and I was speaking to an eyewitness who had witnessed the demolition. From nowhere, we heard sirens coming, and the military just stormed the place and interrupted me during the interview,” he recalled.

He explained that the soldiers questioned why he and his crew were filming. Carlos said he calmly informed them that they were journalists there to report the story.

“I told them we were journalists just telling the story. Beyond that, I tried to speak to the head of the team to let him understand that we were on the grounds to report,” he said.

Mr Carlony recounted that just as he was preparing to go on air and speaking with his producer, one of the soldiers approached him from behind.

“Around that time, we were to go on air, so I was speaking to my producer. And in the process of talking to my producer, another military man from behind said it seemed I was filming and so he punched me from behind, two direct blows to my neck,” he stated.

“At that point, I lost control and almost fell down.”

According to him, after the assault, the soldiers informed him that he was being taken away. He was forced into a vehicle along with the Group CEO of McDan and three others and driven to the National Security Headquarters.

“After all these things happened, they now said I would be arrested, and they pushed me into the vehicle together with the Group CEO of McDan and three others to the National Security Head Office,” he explained.

“They kept us there for about 45 minutes. They came in, monitored the room, and asked me questions. I told them I was from JoyNews. At this point, they had taken our phones and went through them.”

He added that he was asked to write a statement, but he insisted on hearing from his boss first.

“They asked me to write a statement, and I told them I had to hear from my bosses before we take it from there,” he said.

“Briefly, that was what happened. There was no confrontation at all. We were actually filming when they came in and assaulted me.”

Agradaa seeks plea bargain in nude photo case involving Prophet Appiah Enim

The founder and leader of Heaven Way Church, Evangelist Patricia Asiedu, popularly known as Agradaa, has sought a plea bargain in an ongoing court case in which she and two others are facing charges for distributing nude images of Prophet Emmanuel Appiah Enim.

Agradaa appeared before the Accra High Court on July 30, 2025, as proceedings continued.

According to reports, during the hearing, her legal team disclosed that they were in discussions with the Attorney General, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, to reach a plea bargain agreement.

The court has adjourned the case to October 21, 2025, to allow time for the outcome of the negotiations.

Background

The case dates back to 2021, when Agradaa became embroiled in a heated public dispute with Prophet Emmanuel Appiah Enim.

What began as a typical online war of words escalated when Agradaa allegedly aired nude images of the prophet during a broadcast on Thunder TV (now Today’s TV), a television station she owned.

She was arrested in 2022 and charged under Section 67(1) of the Cybersecurity Act (Act 1038) for the non-consensual distribution of intimate images.

The case intensified in July 2024, when she appeared in court on additional charges of possessing and distributing indecent material.

Reports indicated that not only did she share the images during a live broadcast, but she also used them to promote a product, reportedly a type of herbal bitters.

Agradaa was subsequently granted bail set at GH¢200,000, with the condition of providing two justified sureties.

If the plea bargain process is successful, Agradaa and her co-accused could avoid a full trial by reaching an agreement with the state, potentially involving an admission of guilt in exchange for a reduced sentence or fine.

Security analyst proposes one-hour daily movement window for Bawku residents

0

Security analyst, Anthony Acquaye Security analyst, Anthony Acquaye

As tensions persist in Bawku, security analyst Anthony Acquaye is calling for even stricter movement restrictions in the conflict-ridden municipality, suggesting that residents be allowed just one hour per day to carry out essential activities.

His proposal comes in the wake of a government-imposed curfew from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., a measure intended to curb violence and restore calm in the troubled area.

President John Dramani Mahama has also directed the Ghana Armed Forces to transition from a peacekeeping posture to a more assertive peace enforcement strategy, underscoring the seriousness of the security crisis in Bawku.

Speaking to Accra 100.5 FM’s Midday news on Wednesday, July 30, Acquaye described the current interventions as necessary but insufficient, stressing the need for a firmer grip on the situation.

“At this stage, what is needed is not just control but total enforcement.

Out of the 24 hours, I propose that only one hour be given to the people to carry out their activities,” he said.

The proposal has stirred debate among the public and security experts.

While some argue that tighter restrictions could help stabilize the volatile situation, others warn that such extreme measures risk deepening the humanitarian toll on residents already struggling under the curfew.

Meanwhile, many residents of Bawku have expressed growing concern over the prolonged insecurity, disruptions to daily life, and the potential for military excesses under the new enforcement orders.

John Paintsil rejects Multimedia’s paltry GH¢100,000 compensation over defamation suit

0

Countryman Songo (L) and Former Black Stars defender, John Paintsil Countryman Songo (L) and Former Black Stars defender, John Paintsil

Former Black Stars defender, John Paintsil has outrightly rejected a GH¢100,000 compensation proposal from the Multimedia Group and its sports presenter, Patrick Osei Agyemang, popularly known as “Countryman Songo”, in an ongoing defamation suit.

The legal tussle stems from comments made on a popular sports programme aired by the Multimedia Group, which Paintsil claims were not only false but damaging to his image, credibility, and legacy in Ghanaian football.

He is demanding GH¢20 million in compensation from the media conglomerate and an additional GH¢5 million from Countryman Songo personally for the defamatory remarks made against him.

According to the terms of the offer presented by the Multimedia Group and Countryman Songo, the GH¢100,000 compensation was proposed presumably in an attempt to settle the matter out of court.

However, sources close to the player say Paintsil found the offer “disrespectful,” especially considering the scale of public defamation and the professional and personal toll it has taken on him.

Paintsil is being represented by Theophilus Tawiah of WTS Nobisfields, a leading Ghanaian law firm with a strong reputation for litigation, dispute resolution, and corporate legal services.

WTS Nobisfields is the Ghana member firm of WTS Global, a top-tier international tax and legal network.

At the last court hearing on 18th July 2025, Multimedia Group and Patrick Osei Agyemang were ordered by the court to file their witness statements within two weeks, having previously failed to comply with earlier directives.

The case was subsequently adjourned to 17th October 2025 for Case Management Conference.

Paintsil, who has represented Ghana at the highest levels of international football and is widely respected within and outside the sporting fraternity, insists that justice must be served through proper legal means.

He has vowed to pursue the case to its legal conclusion.

This development has reignited public discourse around media ethics, accountability, and the long-standing tensions between sports personalities and broadcasters in Ghana.

Legal observers believe the outcome of this case could set a significant precedent in how defamation cases involving high-profile individuals and media houses are treated in the country.

As of now, the case remains active in court, and the Multimedia Group has yet to publicly respond to Paintsil’s rejection of their settlement offer.

More than a dozen children die because of food shortages in Sudan camp

0

Now in its third year, the civil war has crippled humanitarian networks, collapsed the economy Now in its third year, the civil war has crippled humanitarian networks, collapsed the economy

Thirteen children died last month as a result of the severe shortage of food at a displacement camp in war-torn Sudan’s East Darfur state, medics have said.

The Sudan Doctors Network, a professional organisation with members working inside Lagawa camp, reported “deteriorating humanitarian conditions” and widespread malnutrition – a hunger crisis caused by the 27-month civil war that has devastated the country.

Located in the city of el-Daein, the settlement is home to at least 7,000 people and has been subjected to repeated attacks by armed groups.

Famine was first identified last year in a camp in Sudan’s western region of Darfur and has since spread to other areas.

On Tuesday, in a statement regarding Lagawa camp, the Sudan Doctors Network wrote: “The network calls on the international community and humanitarian organisations to act immediately to provide food and basic healthcare to the camp’s residents, especially children and pregnant women.”

El-Daein is the capital of East Darfur, a state entirely controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which is battling the army.

Now in its third year, the civil war has crippled humanitarian networks, collapsed the economy and broken down social services. These factors, and more, have led to a food crisis.

In addition to famine conditions, aid groups have warned of a cholera outbreak in Darfur.

The United Nations said cases of the disease have been rising in the city of Tawila, where 1,500 serious infections, suspected and confirmed, have been reported since June.

The breakdown of water and sanitation services, combined with low vaccination coverage, has increased the risk of cholera outbreaks, the UN said.

Sudan was plunged into a civil war in April 2023 after a vicious struggle for power broke out between its army and the RSF.

The two rivals had been allies – coming to power together in a coup – but fell out over an internationally backed plan to move towards civilian rule.

It has led to one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, tens of thousands of civilians have been killed, more than 12 million have been forced to flee their homes and nearly a million are in famine.

Ghana Armed Forces, Presidency launch probe into military brutality on civilian, arrest of journalist

A screenshot from a video of the incident A screenshot from a video of the incident

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has commenced investigations into the reported assault of a civilian and the attempted arrest of a JoyNews journalist, Carlos Calony, by uniformed soldiers at a demolition site near Spintex, Accra.

The Department of Public Relations of the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that it has begun internal investigations into the conduct of the soldiers involved in the incident.

“In line with the directive from the Presidency, the Ghana Armed Forces wishes to inform the general public that investigations have begun into the inappropriate conduct of some soldiers during an encounter with journalists around Spintex in Accra today,” the statement noted.

Signed by Captain VA Arhin of the Ghana Navy, the release assured the public that the investigation would be thorough and those found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action.

“The Armed Forces remain professional and will do everything possible to maintain their known high standards,” it added.

Meanwhile, the Presidency, through a statement signed by the Minister of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has condemned the incident.

The statement described the attempted arrest of the journalist and the assault on the eyewitness as “utterly unacceptable” and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to media freedom.

“I am directed by President John Dramani Mahama to unequivocally reaffirm his unwavering commitment to the freedom and safety of journalists,” the statement read.

“A free and unfettered press is a cornerstone of our democracy, essential for accountability, transparency, and informed public discourse.”

President Mahama has instructed the Minister of Defence and the National Security Coordinator to investigate the matter and ensure that those responsible are disciplined accordingly.

The Presidency emphasised that appropriate punitive measures must be implemented swiftly to uphold democratic principles and prevent future misconduct.

The incident occurred when Calony was covering the demolition of a warehouse reportedly owned by prominent businessman, Dr Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan.

Armed individuals believed to be operatives of the National Security stormed the location and confronted the journalist, questioning his presence and his right to report from the site.

The situation escalated when Calony began interviewing a civilian eyewitness. A soldier in military uniform began whipping the civilian, with several other uniformed men joining in the assault.

The journalist and his cameraman were ordered to stop recording the incident. Despite his protests and insistence on his right to report, Calony was reportedly detained and taken to the National Security’s Blue Gate facility in Accra.

The cameraman, who narrated the incident to JoyNews, said the officers accused Calony of filming them without permission.

“They have taken Carlos because they said they suspect he filmed them when they came. So, they seized his phone and took him to National Security,” he said.

‘State capture of the worst kind’

0

The Minority have acccused President Mahama and his brother of engaging in state capture The Minority have acccused President Mahama and his brother of engaging in state capture

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of orchestrating “state capture of the worst kind” to favor President John Mahama’s brother, Ibrahim Mahama, in mining deals.

In a statement dated July 29, 2025, signed by Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, MP for Mampong and Ranking Member of the Lands and Natural Resources Committee, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus alleged that strategic appointments and decisions are designed to benefit Ibrahim Mahama’s Engineers and Planners (E&P) Limited.

“Ever since President Mahama began his second stint as the President of Ghana in January 2025, the system has been set up to facilitate his brother Ibrahim’s mining activities, with former E&P employees placed in strategic positions in the mining regulatory sector. E&P’s former spokesperson, Sammy Gyamfi, is now the CEO of GOLDBOD, the gold purchasing regulator. The top executives of the Minerals Commission are also former employees of E&P and still regard Ibrahim Mahama as their boss.

“Other former employees of E&P are strategically positioned in various high offices in Ghana’s extractive sector. This is state capture of the worst kind, engineered and planned by the ‘engineers and planners’ of the NDC Government. They are once again scheming to hand over the country’s resources to the President’s brother, as the President did in 2016. But this time, it’s more subtle and refined,” the Minority said.

The caucus cited the Black Volta Gold Project, where E&P is in a legal dispute with Azumah Resources Limited in Ghana and UK courts, as part of a pattern of political patronage.

“As the matter is still before the courts, our focus is not to rehash the legalities or illegalities of the Black Volta Gold Project agreement but to draw the public’s attention to the broader picture. To this end, we wish to point out that the Black Volta Gold Project is merely the latest in a pattern of political patronage backing Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, the President’s brother, in his business affairs.

“While E&P denies political patronage by the NDC government, the Ghanaian public is not deceived, and the evidence is irrefutable,” the caucus said.

The Minority further recalled the 2016 Exton Cubic case, where Ibrahim Mahama’s firm secured bauxite leases covering 60% of Ghana’s reserves, later voided by the Supreme Court in 2019 for violating the Constitution.

They also questioned the government’s handling of the Damang Mines, briefly taken over in April 2025 before a one-year lease extension was granted to Gold Fields Ghana Limited, suggesting it was linked to E&P’s contract disputes.

The caucus criticized President Mahama’s July 8, 2025, statement that “the time has come for Ghanaians to own gold mines” as favoring his brother and NDC allies, while mines linked to NPP’s Bernard Antwi-Boasiako were closed.

“While this may sound like an invitation to all Ghanaians, it really is limited only to the President’s brother and other financiers of the NDC party. It clearly does not include gold mining entrepreneurs like Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi, whose mines have been shut down on the orders of the Presidency. This purely political persecution of a miner who employs hundreds of Ghanaians renders the President’s words hollow and hypocritical,” the Minority said.

While reiterating their claim of state capture by President Mahama and his brother, the Minority served notice of their intent to reveal more such schemes as part of their mandate to hold the government accountable.

Kamala Harris rules out running for California governor

0

Former US presidential candidate Kamala Harris says she will not run for governor of California.

Following her unsuccessful 2024 presidential bid, reports suggested Harris was weighing entering next year’s election to lead her home state of California, where she had served as a US senator and worked as a prosecutor.

“After deep reflection,” the former vice-president, a Democrat, said in a statement on social media, “I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election.”

“For now, my leadership – and public service – will not be in elected office,” she added, saying she would share “more details in the months ahead about my own plans.”

Her decision leaves the door open for her to mount another try for the White House in 2028, while also removing a possible frontrunner from the race to succeed Governor Gavin Newsom, a fellow Democrat understood to have his own presidential ambitions.

In her statement, Harris appeared to address worries within her own party about its direction and future after she lost November’s election to President Donald Trump.

“As we look ahead, we must be willing to pursue change through new methods and fresh thinking—committed to our same values and principles, but not bound by the same playbook,” she posted.

Primaries for California’s next governor are set to take place in June 2026, before the general election in November. Newsom is completing his second and final term and the new governor will take office in 2027.

Democrats dominate the state’s political leadership, and whoever wins the party’s nomination will be expected to then take the governorship. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the last Republican to serve as governor, left office in 2011.

An economic powerhouse of America, California would be the world’s 5th largest economy if it were a country. It’s also home to the Silicon Valley, where companies like Apple and Meta are based, giving its governor, as well as its regulations and laws, influence at the national level.

Ghana’s Debt-to-GDP Ratio Falls to 43.8% Amid Cedi Recovery

0

Debt Ghana
Debt Ghana

Ghana’s public debt declined to 43.8% of GDP by June 2025, down from 55% in March, according to the Bank of Ghana’s latest economic data.

The improvement reflects accelerated progress under President John Mahama’s debt restructuring strategy, exceeding the government’s 2028 target of sub-55% ahead of schedule.

While external debt rose to $59.4 billion (from $49.5 billion in March), domestic debt fell sharply to 312.7 billion cedis (from 326.9 billion cedis).

The divergence stems from the cedi’s 40.7% cumulative appreciation against major currencies this year, reducing local-currency liability burdens.

External debt restructuring 90% completed since Ghana entered an IMF-backed exchange program in December 2022 contributed significantly to the fiscal recalibration.

Finance Ministry records confirm the restructuring aimed to stabilize macroeconomic indicators under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.

The central bank’s data precedes Wednesday’s monetary policy briefing, where further details on inflation and growth targets are anticipated.

Facts of Ato Essien case must be re-examined – Dr. John Apea

0

Head of Missions at the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council, Dr. John Apea, has called for a re-examination of the evidence in the case involving William Ato Essien, founder of the defunct Capital Bank.

His comments follow the Court of Appeal’s decision on Wednesday, July 30, to grant Ato Essien bail of GH¢10 million with two sureties, pending the outcome of his appeal. Essien is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence for the misappropriation of over GH¢90 million in public funds.

As part of his bail conditions, he is required to surrender his passport to the court registry and report monthly to the Registrar of the Court.

Essien was convicted by the Accra High Court in 2023 after he failed to honour a restitution agreement in which he committed to repaying GH¢90 million to the state in order to avoid a custodial sentence.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom, Dr. Apea, a vocal advocate for Essien’s release, welcomed the court’s ruling as a step in the right direction.

He emphasised that support for Essien’s bail and calls to revisit the case are based on principles of fairness and concerns about his health, rather than his former financial standing.

“Ato Essien is an ordinary Ghanaian just like everybody else, and that is why I find it very disheartening when people are saying the rich get away with issues. He is an ordinary Ghanaian. He is someone who has been able to build himself up,” he said.

Dr. Apea also cited Essien’s deteriorating health as a key factor justifying the bail.

“This bail will allow him to access better medical care, which is a fundamental human right,” he stated.

Ghana’s agriculture needs full value chain focus – Prof. Asante

0

Professor Felix Ankomah Asante, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Development at the University of Ghana, has called for a comprehensive approach to agricultural development that goes beyond farming to include every link in the value chain.

Speaking at the Conversations Under the Baobab Tree (Ɔdadeɛ National Dialogue), held under the theme “Towards A Holistic Approach to Agriculture in Ghana,” Professor Asante stressed the importance of viewing agriculture as an interconnected system—from production to processing, transportation, and ultimately, consumption.

“A holistic approach in agriculture should encompass all the related sectors in the value chain,” he said. “And here I am talking about sectors from the farm to the table. So we are talking about production, processing, transportation, and consumption.”

James Boateng, the 2018 Ghana National Best Farmer, also called for a coordinated and context-sensitive approach to agricultural development in the country, warning that fragmented efforts and poor execution are holding back progress in the sector.

He stressed the need for a “through-the-line” strategy that bridges the gap between policy intentions and real-world outcomes.

“We are advocating for a through-the-line approach and scaling up of our efforts to make meaningful progress,” he said. “Implement every plant strategy timely, bridge the gap between intention and outcomes. Strengthen accountability. Foster greater collaboration. Tailor your policies to the unique context of the diverse agricultural zones.”

Canada follows France and UK with plan to recognise Palestinian state

0

Prime Minister Mark Carney has said Canada plans to recognise a Palestinian state in September, becoming the third G7 nation to make such an announcement in recent days.

Carney said such a move would depend on democratic reforms, including the Palestinian Authority holding elections next year without Hamas.

His remarks come a day after the UK announced it would recognise a Palestinian state in September unless Israel agreed to a ceasefire and other conditions and a week after France made a similar announcement.

Most countries – nearly 150 of the UN’s 193 member states – formally recognise a Palestinian state.

Carney cited the expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, and the 7 October 2023 attacks on Israel by Hamas as reasons behind Canada’s dramatic shift in foreign policy.

He told Wednesday’s news conference: “The level of human suffering in Gaza is intolerable and it is rapidly deteriorating.”

He said a recognition of Palestinian statehood would hinge on commitments by the Palestinian Authority to fundamentally reform its governance, to hold general elections in 2026 without Hamas and to demilitarise the territory.

He added that Canada had long been committed to a two-state solution as part of a negotiated peace process, but said that “this approach is no longer tenable”.

“The prospect of a Palestinian state is being eroded before our eyes,” he said.

Carney added that he had spoken with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas earlier on Wednesday about the announcement.

The prime minister has been under pressure in recent days to address Palestinian statehood, after the UK and France – close allies of Canada – came out with their own statements on the issue.

Nearly 200 former Canadian ambassadors and diplomats signed a letter on Tuesday calling on Carney to recognise a Palestinian state.

The letter, shared with Canadian media outlets on Wednesday, said Israel’s actions in the West Bank and Gaza violated Canada’s interests and values.

Canada’s principles, it said, “are being abandoned daily with the massive displacement, indiscriminate bombardment and starvation of Palestinian civilians in Gaza and the violent attacks by extremist settlers in the West Bank”.

Recognition of a Palestinian state, the letter said, “will not only reinforce our long-standing commitment to the self-determination of the Palestinian people but also our total rejection of any effort to displace or expel Palestinians”.

Jorrel Hato transfer news: Chelsea agree deal to sign 19-year-old Ajax centre-back | Football News

0

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Ajax centre-back Jorrel Hato.

Sky Sports News understands Chelsea will pay an initial fee of £35.5m, plus add-ons, for the 19-year-old.

Ajax had originally valued the player at around £52m.

Hato is due to arrive in London in the coming days to undergo a medical and finalise the paperwork on a long-term contract.

He was not included in Ajax’s squad for the Como Cup final on Sunday as he did not want to risk injury ahead of his move to Stamford Bridge.

The defender fits into Chelsea’s strategy of signing young developing players on low base wages on heavily incentivised contracts.

The club have been keen to sign Hato as he can also provide cover to Marc Cucurella at left-back, who played nearly 70 games last season for Chelsea and Spain.

Hato would mark the seventh new signing in the summer transfer window for Enzo Maresca, following the arrivals of Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens, Estevao Willian, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr.

Can Hato succeed in the Premier League?

Sky Sports’ Patrick Rowe:

Despite only being 19 years of age, the jump into the Premier League will not faze Jorrel Hato.

Still a teenager, he has played over 100 times for Ajax, captained the club at just 17 and played six times for the Netherlands.

Whenever he is tasked with stepping up, he not only delivers, he excels.

Hato is capable of playing at both centre back or left back, adding valuable competition and depth to Chelsea’s backline, who are facing a quick turnaround before the 2025/26 season begins following their Club World Cup triumph.

However, this isn’t a signing just to make up the numbers. Chelsea fans should be excited by the player they are securing. His rise has already been astronomical – but he is just getting started.

Parliament approves allocation of oil revenues, mineral royalties to ‘Big Push Agenda’

Parliament has approved the government’s request to dedicate all oil revenues and mineral royalties to the implementation of the Big Push Programme, estimated at 13.8 billion Ghana Cedis.

The programme, which is scheduled for completion by 2028 through domestic financing, is aimed at improving road infrastructure across the country.

The approval follows a request by the government for multi-year commitments to support the construction of selected road projects under the initiative.

Part of the joint committee on budget and finance report reads, “The Committee has carefully considered the Referral and it is of the opinion that the request is in the right direction.

“The Committee also noted that Parliament had already approved the policy and the allocation to the “Big Push” Programme in the 2025 Budget Statement. Christian Council of Ghana urges rival factions in Bawku conflict to embrace dialogue

0

By Jibril Abdul Mumuni

Accra, July 30, GNA- The Christian Council of Ghana has urged rival factions in the Bawku conflict to embrace dialogue, uphold the sanctity of human life, as they resolve their differences peacefully.

In a press statement copied to the Ghana News Agency and signed by Reverend Dr. Cyril Fayose, General Secretary of the Council, the Council noted its particular concern regarding the devastating impact of the conflict on churches and mission establishments in Bawku.

The Council highlighted that Bawku is home to numerous Christian congregations and mission facilities, many of which have suffered damages and the suspension of their activities.

These institutions, according to the Council, have long contributed to peacebuilding and social development in the region, and their safety and continuity are essential for the well-being of all residents.

The statement further called on local opinion leaders, religious groups, civil society organisations, women’s groups, and youth groups, all of whom play crucial roles in mediation and reconciliation, to intensify their efforts towards lasting peace.

The Council urged the security agencies stationed in Bawku to carry out their duties with utmost professionalism, impartiality, and restraint.

“Security personnel must avoid any actions that may inflame tensions or alienate the local population. The foremost responsibility is to protect the citizens, including vulnerable groups and places of worship, without discrimination or intimidation,” the Council stated.

Declaring its solidarity with all peacebuilding stakeholders, the Council called for a non-violent resolution to the conflict.

It also urged the government to implement inclusive and sustainable peace initiatives that meaningfully engage all relevant parties.

Additionally, the Council called on pastors and church members across the nation to commit to fervent prayer for peace, healing, and divine guidance for all those working towards reconciliation in Bawku.

The Council noted that continued instability in Bawku did not only endangered lives but also undermined social cohesion and development in the Upper East Region and beyond.

“Restoring peace is a shared responsibility, one that requires the collective effort of traditional leaders, ethnic communities, religious institutions, security agencies, and government authorities,” the statement said.

NPP’s 2028 comeback depends on Bawumia

0

Former Deputy CEO of the Youth Employment Agency, Alhaji Ibrahim Bashiru, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rally behind former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s best bet of regaining power in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News, Alhaji Bashiru described Dr. Bawumia as a humble, competent, and emotionally intelligent leader whose track record in both political and public service positions him as the ideal candidate for the presidency.

He emphasised that among all potential contenders, Dr. Bawumia stands out as the most prepared and visionary figure to lead the party into the future.

“If the NPP really wants power in 2028, we don’t have to look left or right. We have to look straight and see the face of a very humble man. Somebody who has demonstrated beyond a reasonable doubt both in political life and in public life that he is a very oriented person and that he is somebody who has a consistent emotional intelligence; very calm, has innovative ideas and is very well prepared for the presidency. I do not see that in anybody’s face. I see that in the face of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” he stated.

According to him, Dr. Bawumia is the only candidate who will be accepted by voters even outside the party.
