OSP’s unattainable bail conditions meant to punish Adom-Otchere – Lawyer

0

The lawyer for Paul Adom-Otchere, who is under investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), has defended recent public interventions in his client’s case, arguing they were necessary to challenge what he called excessive bail terms.

Responding to criticism sparked by a “thank you” video Adom-Otchere released after securing bail, legal counsel Apraku Agyepong insisted that those who intervened were not obstructing the OSP’s work but rather responding to what he described as a deliberate attempt to detain his client through unachievable bail conditions.

In an interview, Agyepong disclosed that the OSP’s original bail requirement demanded two landed properties owned personally by Adom-Otchere, in addition to two sureties. This, he said, was despite the fact that Adom-Otchere had already declared—through an official disclosure form—that he did not own any landed property.

“The OSP was fully aware that the conditions they set were not attainable,” Agyepong asserted. “The bail conditions were designed to ensure my client would be detained, effectively using bail as a form of punishment.”

He added that it was only after these facts were made public that concerned individuals and groups stepped in, advocating for a review of what they saw as unfair treatment. Agyepong stressed that the principle of bail is not to punish but to ensure a person’s availability for investigation or trial.

Following these interventions, the OSP eventually revised the bail conditions, which allowed for Adom-Otchere’s release.

Agyepong maintained that the actions of those who intervened were in defense of legal fairness, not an attempt to undermine the investigation. He criticised the backlash as politically motivated and misleading.

He described the public narrative suggesting otherwise as a “wicked political spin” and “far from the truth.”

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Hubert Leo Mensah, Acting Head of Research, Monitoring and Evaluation at the National Sports Authority, shared his enthusiasm for partnering with the organizers to advance Ghana’s sports ecosystem and promote holistic wellness.

Meet Alex Quaison-Sackey, the first African who served as President of UN General Assembly

Alex Quaison-Sackey was the first African to serve as President of UN General Assembly Alex Quaison-Sackey was the first African to serve as President of UN General Assembly

Numerous Ghanaians have elevated the country’s image on the international stage through their remarkable achievements.

Among these distinguished personalities is Alex Quaison-Sackey, a diplomat who served as the first African President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

He served as Ghana’s second ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations from 1959 to 1965 and President of the United Nations General Assembly from 1964 to 1965.

Here is a brief profile of Alex Quaison-Sackey

Quaison-Sackey was born in Winneba in the Central Region. He attended the Mfantsipim School in Cape Coast before proceeding to Achimota College.

His pursuit of higher education took him to the United Kingdom, where he read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Exeter College, Oxford University, graduating with honours.

He later pursued further studies in international relations and law at the London School of Economics after being appointed one of Ghana’s first Foreign Service officers.

Quaison-Sackey’s rise in diplomatic service was rapid. He became Ghana’s second Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations from June 30, 1959, to 1965.

His most remarkable diplomatic achievement came in 1964 when he was elected President of the 19th Session of the UN General Assembly, making him the first African to occupy the prestigious position.

During this same period, he also served concurrently as Ghana’s Ambassador to Cuba (1961–1965) and to Mexico (1962–1964).

According to a report by Green Views, a lasting legacy was left by Quaison-Sackey during his tenure at the United Nations General Assembly.

“He was a strong advocate for human rights, and he believed that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect”, it noted.

In 1965, under President Kwame Nkrumah’s Convention People’s Party (CPP) government, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Unfortunately, his tenure was short-lived. While on an official trip to North Vietnam with Nkrumah, the government was overthrown in a military coup on February 24, 1966.

The new regime, led by Lt General Joseph Arthur Ankrah, replaced key ministers, ending his first tenure in government.

More than a decade later, in 1978, Quaison-Sackey returned to diplomatic service when the Supreme Military Council, led by Lt General Fred Akuffo, appointed him as Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States.

Throughout his career, Quaison-Sackey was known for his intellect, poise, and unwavering commitment to African dignity and international cooperation.

His election to the helm of the UN General Assembly was not only a personal triumph but also a milestone for the African continent, which was still emerging from the shadows of colonialism at the time.

Alex Quaison-Sackey passed on December 21, 1992, at the age of 68.

Accountant-General suspends salaries of 5,673 employees amid payroll audit

Controller and Accountant-General’s Department signage Controller and Accountant-General’s Department signage

The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has suspended the salaries of 5,673 government employees as part of a nationwide effort to clean up the public payroll and protect state funds.

This development follows the 2025 Nationwide Payroll Headcount Exercise conducted by the Ghana Audit Service, which uncovered that 53,311 individuals listed on the government’s payroll were “separated staff”.

Separated staff means these individuals were no longer in active service but were still receiving salaries.

While 47,638 of those separated staff have already been removed from the payroll, the remaining 5,673 salaries processed for payment in July 2025 have now been suspended pending further investigations.

The CAGD has directed heads of institutions across the public sector to initiate recovery procedures for any unearned salaries paid due to wrongful validation.

Additionally, any affected employee whose salary has been stopped but is still at post is required to obtain a letter from their institution addressed to the Auditor-General, with a copy sent to the Ministry of Finance.

This documentation will allow for proper remedial action to reinstate legitimate cases.

This audit initiative is part of a broader effort by the government to promote transparency and accountability in payroll management and reduce leakages from the national budget.

No Mass Deportations, ‘Storm in a Teacup’ Over Viral Video.

President John Dramani Mahama has moved to calm fears among Nigerian nationals residing in Ghana and their government, assuring a special envoy dispatched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that there will be no mass deportations.

During a courtesy call from Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who is Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, President Mahama assured that Ghana has no intention of resorting to mass expulsions, emphasising the shared history and inter-dependence of the two countries.

Mother of seven shot as military fires warning shots in Saamang Mining dispute

0

A mother of seven is battling for her life after sustaining gunshot wounds during a confrontation between military personnel and residents of Saamang, a community in the Fanteakwa South District of the Eastern Region.

The victim, Janet Koh, a trader, was among community members fleeing a chaotic scene after youth in the area resisted an attempt by soldiers to arrest two residents.

The military personnel had been deployed to provide security for Kibi Goldfields Limited, a mining company accused by residents of operating within the buffer zone and main course of the River Akusu.

According to eyewitnesses, residents had halted the company’s operations at the sacred Akusu River.

In response, military personnel reportedly called in by the company arrested two young men believed to be leaders of the resistance.

Tensions escalated when the youth, protesting the arrests, attempted to block the road to prevent the military from removing the detained individuals. In the process, the soldiers fired multiple warning shots to disperse the crowd.

Janet Koh, who was selling roasted corn near the scene, was hit in the right leg by a stray bullet as she fled. She was rushed to the Saviour Memorial Hospital in Osiem, where she remains on admission.

When Citi News visited the community on the morning of Sunday, August 3, 2025, tensions were still high.

Some residents, including victims of the alleged military brutality, are demanding justice and the immediate release of the two detained youth.

Your proposal lacks logic; Ghanaians deserve better

0

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Mr. Samuel Nartey George, has criticised MultiChoice Ghana’s proposal in response to demands for reduced DStv subscription fees, describing it as illogical.

According to the Minister, MultiChoice—the operators of DStv Ghana—proposed to retain existing subscription fees but offered to halt the repatriation of revenue to its headquarters.

His comments follow a statement issued by MultiChoice on Sunday, August 3, and signed by its Managing Director, Alex Okyere, in which the company argued that reducing subscription fees, as requested by the Minister, was not tenable.

The company described the Minister’s previous directive to the National Communications Authority (NCA) to suspend DStv’s broadcasting licence as “regrettable,” noting ongoing efforts to engage constructively with the government in good faith.

MultiChoice also disclosed that it had submitted a proposal to the Minister and the NCA outlining alternative avenues for engagement—chief among them being the retention of current pricing while foregoing the transfer of revenue to its parent company.

But in a sharp response posted on Facebook on Sunday, August 3, Mr. George rejected the offer, insisting that it fails to address the core issue of pricing.

“They proposed that I allow them to maintain the collection of the exorbitant bouquet prices as they stand, but order them not to send the revenue to their headquarters. In all honesty, that offer lacks any logic in my estimation. The essence of my action is to see Ghanaians pay a fair price for the services offered. How does this proposal solve the real issue?” he stated.

The Minister further expressed frustration over what he described as years of exploitation of Ghanaian subscribers and reiterated his determination to ensure pricing reforms.

“I remain open to ‘constructive engagements’ that are centred on PRICE REDUCTION. Anything else is tangential and of no consequence,” he added.

The ongoing standoff between the Ministry and MultiChoice has sparked public debate over the affordability and value of pay-TV services in Ghana.

Read below the statement by Sam George on Facebook

“I have read the release by DStv Ghana and taken full consideration that they vindicate my earlier position that they simply do not take the Ghanaian people serious enough.

The same Group operating in Nigeria reversed price increases in Nigeria when the Nigerian authorities sued them. The Nigerian House of Representatives took the matter up and ordered a suspension of the increases. They complied.

This year, in April, at a time the Ghanaian cedi had seen a ~10% appreciation against all major currencies, inflation had dropped by over 5% and fuel prices had also dropped, DStv announced and implemented a 15% increase.

I believe in the interest of transparency, I make public the alternate proposal that DStv offered to me that I flatly rejected.

They proposed that I allow them maintain the collection of the exorbitant bouquet prices as they stand but order them not to send the revenue to their headquarters. In all honesty, that offer lacks any logic in my estimation. The essence of my action is to see Ghanaians pay a fair price for the services offered. How does this proposal solve the real issue?

For far too long, corporations have fleeced the Ghanaian people. There has been a RESET and it demands a new style of public service that is fiercely protective of the Ghanaian people. I remain empathetic to the Ghanaian staff of DStv but I believe that they should stand with the rest of us as we demand what is right for us.

I remain open to “constructive engagements” that are centred on PRICE REDUCTION. Anything else is tangential and of no consequence.

For God and Country. 🦁🇬🇭

NPP denies alleged $280k contract with Ukrainian firm for anti-Mahama smear campaign

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has denied allegations that it contracted a Ukrainian public relations firm, Brandcom, to execute an online smear campaign ahead of Ghana’s 2024 general elections.

In a statement issued on Saturday, August 3, 2025, the party described as “completely false, baseless, and defamatory” a report published by AllAfrica.com alleging that Brandcom is demanding $280,000 from the NPP for services rendered.

The publication, which claimed the NPP had engaged the firm to manage fake social media accounts and disseminate smear content, has been labelled by the party as an attempt to “tarnish the image of the party and sow public distrust.”

“The NPP has no contractual relationship—past or present—with any entity known as Brandcom, based in Ukraine or elsewhere,” the statement signed by the National Communications Directorate read.

The party stressed that it has never authorised any foreign agency to engage in unethical digital activities or propaganda, insisting that its campaigns have always been conducted with integrity and respect for democratic norms.

The NPP further warned of potential legal action against Brandcom and any media house that republishes the report, demanding a full retraction of what it called unsubstantiated claims.

“We reject any insinuation that undermines our record of issue-based campaigning,” the statement said.

Reaffirming its focus on “building a prosperous Ghana through bold, transparent, and ethical leadership,” the party urged media outlets and the public to remain vigilant against what it described as misinformation from “faceless entities.”

Clottey saved my life during Ablekuma North attack – Chris Lloyd

0

Deputy National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, has revealed that the party’s former Greater Accra Regional Director of Research, Emmanuel Nii Clottey, saved his life during the Ablekuma North election rerun.

Chris Lloyd recounted that Clottey came to his rescue when he was attacked by thugs at the St Peter’s Methodist Church polling station on July 11.

Violence broke out at the venue after a group of unidentified men invaded the polling station, launching attacks on several NPP members, including Chris Lloyd.

Video footage widely circulated on social media shows Chris Lloyd being brutally assaulted by the said individuals.

The incident brought voting to an abrupt pause and created fear and panic among voters.

In the video, Chris Lloyd is seen trying to escape but is quickly overpowered, pinned down, and subjected to continuous beatings.

Speaking after a visit from Emmanuel Nii Clottey, Chris Lloyd said he owes his survival to Clottey’s brave actions during the chaos in Ablekuma North.

“When everyone was afraid to come close, Emmanuel Nii Clottey stood up to ward off these thugs and risked it all. Not everyone will do this, and for that I say thank you and God bless you, my brother.”

Emmanuel Nii Clottey, who has announced his bid for the NPP Greater Accra Regional Secretary position, said he did what needed to be done for someone he considers family.

“The situation was bad, and someone needed to help. Chris is my brother, and I couldn’t watch those hooligans harm him, so I had to intervene, and I did so rightly.”

Still recovering from the ordeal, Chris Lloyd expressed deep appreciation for the support shown him.

“My brother Nii Clottey has come all the way to see how I’m doing. It tells you how he cares and how the party also cares,” he said.

Mahama calms Nigerians’ fears: No mass deportations, ‘storm in a teacup’ over viral video

0

President John Mahama has moved to calm fears among Nigerian nationals residing in Ghana and their government, assuring a special envoy dispatched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that there will be no mass deportations.

During a courtesy call from Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who is Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, President Mahama assured that Ghana has no intention of resorting to mass expulsions, emphasising the shared history and inter-dependence of the two countries.

He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to ECOWAS protocols, dismissing any anxieties in Nigeria over any potential mass deportation of its citizens from Ghana following the emergence of a viral video.

Minister Odumegwu-Ojukwu conveyed the “anxieties” of the Nigerian people and government, citing the viral video, widespread apprehension of mass deportations, and fears of shops belonging to Nigerian traders being burned.

The concerns, she noted, have led to emergency sessions in Nigeria’s National Assembly and traditional rulers instructing relatives in Ghana to return home.

President Mahama acknowledged the historical relations between Ghana and Nigeria, describing them as “siblings of the same parents, and so our destinies are joined together.”

He invoked past unfortunate incidents of mass deportations in both countries—Ghana in the 1960s and Nigeria in the 1980s—, stating, “I think that that is a part of our past, and it’s an unfortunate past that we want to put behind us, and I believe that none of our two countries should mass deport our citizens ever again.”

“We are members of the ECOWAS, and we have the ECOWAS protocol that allows our citizens to travel freely between our countries.”

He also clarified that, although there have been isolated incidents and some individuals involved in criminal activity, such cases are addressed through proper legal procedures, not through collective punishment or mass expulsion. He stated that foreign residents in Ghana who engage in criminal activities shall be held individually liable and sanctioned.

President Mahama traced the recent tensions to the resurfacing of a 2013 video featuring an “Igbo king” discussing land acquisition for a kingdom, which was widely misinterpreted as a recent development.

He dismissed this as “a bit of a storm in a teacup,” assuring the Nigerian delegation that Ghanaian law governs the establishment of traditional councils, making such external claims impossible.

Minister Odumegwu-Ojukwu commended President Mahama for de-escalating a potentially volatile situation, noting that the initial fears of widespread unrest upon their arrival in Accra proved unfounded.

Lali X Lola heat up ‘Fire and Flow’ 2025

0

Ghana’s ‘favourite twins,’ Lali X Lola, delivered music and high-energy performance at the third edition of their Fire and Flow Concert on August 2, 2025, at the Alliance Française, Accra.

This year’s theme for the Fire and Flow concert, “Pepper Soup,” set the tone for an evening of variety and spice.

The music duo explained that the theme was inspired by their upcoming album, titled ‘Pepper Soup’, which drops before the end of August 2025.

According to them, the name captures their dynamism in music.

“Pepper soup has many ingredients, and that’s how our music is, a mix of calm R&B, Highlife, Afrobeat, and other flavours,” they told GhanaWeb.

Opening acts at Fire and Flow III

The night began with a lively atmosphere as the father of Ghanaian DJs, Mercury Quaye and media personality Yaa Bitha served as the MCs for the night, keeping the crowd engaged.

High School Clique opened the show with some well-coordinated dance moves that lit up the stage and had the audience cheering, especially while dancing to Medikal featuring Shatta Wale and Beeztrap’s hit song, “Shoulder.”

Rapper Romeo Swag followed with an intense performance, delivering his bars with confidence and drawing attention from the Hip-hop lovers in the crowd.

Lali X Lola’s performance

When the stars of the night finally appeared, all eyes were on them. Lali X Lola stepped on stage dressed in red outfits, backed by the AfroHarmony Band, who handled the instrumentals.

Their first set featured some of their songs, performed with their signature blend of harmonies and coordinated dance moves.

After a few songs, the twins exited the stage for a quick change, and Kojo Manuel, Hypeman and MC of the Year at the last edition of the Ghana DJ Awards, took control of the crowd.

Before introducing the next segment, he created a special moment. He asked for all the stage lights to be turned off and asked attendees to switch on their phone flashlights for a tribute to the late Highlife legend Daddy Lumba, whose candlelight vigil was being held the same night at Independence Square.

Performances at Fire and Flow III

Kojo Manuel kept the energy high with throwback hits that had fans singing along and dancing.

Then came one of Ghana’s longest-standing music duos, Keche, who performed some of their classics like “Alugutugui.”

Lali X Lola came back for their second set and turned the vibe into pure excitement.

They chatted with the crowd, answered a few questions from the MCs, and then jumped into another high-energy performance of singing, dancing, and unstoppable vibes.

Notable guests in the crowd

The audience may not have filled the entire Alliance Française space, but the turnout proved the twins have a loyal fan base.

Familiar faces like the CEO of Lynx Entertainment, Richie Mensah, Israel Laryea, Efya Nokturnal, Incredible Zigi, and fast-rising musicians such as Kaesa and Herman Suede were spotted in the crowd.

Late start raises questions

The concert was advertised to start at 7 PM, but it did not officially kick off until around 9 PM.

The delay might have been due to the low early turnout, giving organisers time for more guests to arrive.

Even though the event started late, the show ended right on time at exactly 12 AM, unlike many events that drag late into the night.

Final thoughts

Fire and Flow 2025 was not the biggest concert in terms of numbers, but it delivered on experience.

Lali X Lola gave fans what they came for: great music and a strong stage presence.

Ghana’s ‘favourite twins’ are still growing and learning in the industry, and while there’s room for improvement, their passion and energy are promising signs of what’s ahead.

DStv Price Reduction: MultiChoice’s reaction proves they don’t take Ghanaians seriously

0

MultiChoice faces possible suspension of its broadcasting license effective August 7 MultiChoice faces possible suspension of its broadcasting license effective August 7

The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has issued a sharp rebuttal to a recent statement from MultiChoice, which claimed that reducing DStv subscription fees is untenable.

According to Sam George, MultiChoice’s response reinforces his position that the company does not take Ghanaians seriously, stating that his advocacy for price reduction is aimed at ensuring fair pricing for consumers.

In a post on X, the minister noted that the government’s “reset agenda” calls for a new style of public service that is fiercely protective of the interests of the Ghanaian people.

“I have read the release by DStv Ghana and taken full consideration that they vindicate my earlier position that they simply do not take the Ghanaian people serious enough.

“They proposed that I allow them to maintain the collection of the exorbitant bouquet prices as they stand but order them not to send the revenue to their headquarters. In all honesty, that offer lacks any logic in my estimation. The essence of my action is to see Ghanaians pay a fair price for the services offered,” part of his post read.

While criticising what he described as the company’s failure to genuinely address the issue of exorbitant subscription fees, Sam George stated that he remains open to constructive engagements provided MultiChoice is focused on price reduction.

He emphasized that any other proposals are “tangential and of no consequence.”

Sam George also expressed empathy for the Ghanaian staff of MultiChoice, but urged them to support the broader public interest.

“I believe that they should stand with the rest of us as we demand what is right for us,” he said.

The minister noted that in April this year, DStv implemented a 15% increase at a time when the Ghanaian cedi had appreciated by roughly 10% against major currencies, inflation had dropped by over 5%, and fuel prices had declined.

On Sunday, August 3, 2025, MultiChoice issued a press release signed by Managing Director, Alex Okyere and sighted by GhanaWeb Business, stating that reducing DStv subscription fees is not tenable given current economic conditions.

The company also dismissed claims that it had referred to the recent cedi appreciation as a “fluke”, a claim made by the minister during the Government Accountability Series on Friday, August 1, 2025.

Meanwhile, MultiChoice faces a possible suspension of its broadcasting license effective Thursday, August 7, 2025, if it fails to comply with the price reduction directive.

Claims that my comments fueled NDC’s victory in 2024 flawed – Ken Agyapong

Former Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong has explained that if his party had listened to him, the party wouldn’t have lost the 2024 elections.

“They’ve never been fair. I leave it to God. Ewurabena Aubynn gave GH¢10,000 offering during election impasse, it was an act of faith

A pastor at the Trinity Congregation of the Presbyterian Church in Kwashieman has commended Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn, for what he described as an act of faith ahead of her electoral victory.

Speaking during Sunday’s service on August 3, 2025, the pastor recalled that prior to the parliamentary rerun in the constituency, Ewurabena Aubynn gave an offering of GH¢10,000 to the church.

He revealed that this act of generosity took place when the Electoral Commission had yet to announce a date for the rerun.

“Because I deal in second-hand goods, I believe in deposits, before the rerun, she came to church and gave an offering of GH¢10,000. And because of the faith I have in God, I knew she was going to emerge victorious,” he stated.

The pastor further expressed confidence that the newly elected MP would address pressing local issues.

“I believe she will fix the bad roads in Kwashiebu, her victory is not just political, it is a fruit of faith”, he added.

Ewurabena Aubynn was officially sworn into Parliament earlier this month following a fiercely contested rerun held in 19 polling stations.

The Electoral Commission nullified the initial December 2024 results due to widespread irregularities, including unsigned pink sheets and discrepancies in vote tallies.

At the rerun, Aubynn secured a narrow victory with 34,090 votes, edging out the New Patriotic Party’s Akua Afriyie, who polled 33,881.

Excavators seized in joint anti-galamsey operation in Jimira Forest Reserve

0

A joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and Forestry Commission has led to the seizure of three excavators during a crackdown on illegal mining activities in the Jimira Forest Reserve.

A police statement dated August 2 indicated that the operation was triggered after Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, acted on a Facebook post by Joy FM journalist Erastus Asare Donkor, which reported that illegal miners had invaded the protected forest.

In response, the Special Anti-Galamsey Taskforce, led by DSP Karim Mahama and ASP Alhaji Bawah Abdul Jalil, was swiftly deployed to verify the claims and enforce the law.

Upon arrival, the team learned that the Forestry Commission, working with the Ashanti Regional Police Command, had already moved in and seized one excavator after the miners fled the area. The task force continued into the forest for further investigations.

Inside the reserve, two SHANTUI excavators were found abandoned and immobile due to mechanical issues. Signs of recent mining confirmed the area had been actively used.

On the way to the site, the team encountered another SHANTUI excavator left in the middle of the road, blocking access. The machine was cleared and transported to the Manso Adubia Police Station, where it has been impounded pending further investigation.

“The Special Anti-Galamsey team continues to monitor the situation, reinforcing the government’s commitment to combating illegal mining activities and preserving the country’s forest reserves,” the police assured in the statement.

A video of Empress Gifty has gone viral on social media, showing her bursting out with laughter at a joke about convicted preacher Nana Agradaa.

In the video shared on X on August 3, 2025, Empress Gifty and her husband, Hopeson Adorye, who were present at the just-ended DKY Night of Comedy and Music, were seen laughing at the joke cracked by popular comedienne Jacinta.

Jacinta, in her jokes about the preacher, noted how she transitioned from a fetish priest to an evangelist and now, as a convict, serving a 15-year jail term in Nsawam.

Jacinta noted, “Another person I have been praying for very well is Agradaa. Only one person, satan, called her; God too called, and now prison has called her. Nothing must happen to these people; they are national treasures.”

This statement dissolved Empress Gifty and her husband into uncontrollable laughter.

It would be recalled that Agradaa and Empress Gifty have recently been embroiled in a public feud, with tensions escalating after the convicted preacher allegedly made a derogatory comment about the gospel musician.

Also, Empress Gifty is praying for a Tema High Court to award her a sum of GH¢20 million due to derogatory comments made against her by Nana Agradaa.

Edem Agbana urges transformation of Ohawu Agricultural College into university

The Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana, has formally petitioned the Ministry of Agriculture to prioritize the transformation of the Ohawu Agricultural College into a fully-fledged University of Agriculture.

In a Facebook post on August 2, 2025, Edem Agbana disclosed that he submitted a letter to the ministry this week, drawing attention to what he described as the longstanding neglect of the institution by successive governments.

“There is no better time to honor the promise of transforming this institution into a fully-fledged University of Agriculture than during the next four years under President Mahama’s leadership We believe the President can, and he will”, he said.

Agbana noted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) made commitments in 2016, 2020, and 2024 to elevate the college, and stressed his personal resolve to help fulfill that promise.

“As the representative of the chiefs and people of Ketu North, where this prestigious college is located, I consider it my duty to lead the charge and do the necessary legwork to make this vision a reality,” he stated.

He also expressed optimism following what he described as an extensive discussion with the Minister of Education, whom he said is aligned with the vision for transforming the college.

“His commitment offers renewed hope that this long overdue transformation can finally be delivered,” he indicated.

The MP assured his constituents that advocacy for the upgrade will continue until the goal is achieved.

“To the chiefs and people, I say this: we will not relent in our advocacy. We are determined to see this promise fulfilled, not merely as a political commitment, but as a strategic investment in the future of agriculture, education, and the overall development of our region,” he said.

‘Ghana’s Security Should Focus on Intelligence, Not Armed Forces’ – Ejisu MP Boateng

0

Kwabena Boateng, Member of Parliament for Ejisu, has voiced strong concerns over the growing prominence of armed personnel in Ghana’s national security operations as reported by Ghana Web.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, August 2, 2025, Boateng criticized the militarized approach, which he believes strays from the original purpose of the country’s national security framework.

“The worrying, emerging issues about national security—when you read the national security law, you do not see a group of weaponized people,” Boateng stated.

He emphasized that in today’s world, national security should prioritize human security, intelligence gathering, and research, rather than the reliance on armed forces.

His remarks come amid controversy surrounding an incident involving National Security operatives and military officers during a demolition exercise, which resulted in the assault of JoyNews journalist Carlos Calony and his interviewee.

Boateng condemned the attack, labeling it as a direct threat to both democratic governance and press freedom.

The Ejisu MP also raised alarms about the qualifications of some security operatives, suggesting that certain individuals may not possess the necessary academic credentials for their roles.

He recounted an unsettling encounter at a police station, where he witnessed a National Security officer struggling to write his name.

“You could see that he had no form of education,” Boateng added, expressing concern over the growing need for well-trained personnel in sensitive security positions.

One timeless style for church is a modest dress or a matching skirt and top. Choosing neutral colors like black, navy, grey, or cream gives you a versatile outfit that works for many occasions. You can add elegance with lace, pleats, or even ruffle details. A scarf, brooch, or hat can also bring your outfit to life.

For festive events, flowing maxi dresses or full skirts paired with simple blouses are both comfortable and fashionable. Bright prints, floral patterns, or even pastel tones are great choices. You can add a belt or bold jewelry to make your look stand out.

Jumpsuits and rompers are also becoming popular among stylish mothers. These one-piece outfits are easy to wear and can be dressed up or down depending on the event. Choose a tailored jumpsuit in solid colors like navy, burgundy, or forest green for church. For festivals, consider a patterned romper or a colorful jumpsuit for a fun and youthful look.

So bring out your sewing machine and start creating something beautiful for your next church visit or festival celebration.

Bail terms must be predictable and legislated

0

Legal practitioner and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team, Nii Kpakpo Samoa Addo, has called for reforms to Ghana’s bail laws to ensure fairness, clarity, and consistency in the application of bail conditions across different cases.

His comments follow criticism by Nicholas Lenin Anane Agyei, legal counsel for media personality Paul Adom-Otchere, who described the bail conditions imposed by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) as punitive and unreasonable.

The OSP had initially required Mr. Adom-Otchere to produce two landed properties registered in his name as a condition for his release.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, August 2, Samoa Addo clarified that bail, by principle, is not a punishment but a legal mechanism to ensure the availability of a suspect during investigations or trial.

However, he acknowledged that the wide discretion currently available to investigative bodies in setting bail terms can sometimes create inconsistencies and perceptions of unfairness.

“In 2025, are we as lawyers all in agreement that our laws, as they stand, can be better reformed?” he asked.

“So we can get to the point where, for each offence, there’s a defined quantum of bail—whether cash, property, or otherwise—so that the process is predictable.”

He argued that codifying bail amounts and conditions for various offences in statute would eliminate the problem of excessive discretion and potential arbitrariness.

“When we have these things finely put in statutes, it will take away the issue of discretion. Because whenever there is discretion, the only remedy you have under our laws is to go to court and argue that the discretion has not been exercised in accordance with law, or you ask for a variation,” he explained.

Referencing the Adom-Otchere case, Samoa Addo noted that when the former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airport Company Limited indicated he could not meet the OSP’s initial bail terms, the office allowed a variation through a third party, enabling him to secure his release.

FDA Intensifies Food Safety Drive in Ashanti Region Schools

Food and Drugs Authority (FDA)
Food and Drugs Authority (FDA)

Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has expanded its nationwide food safety campaign to Kumasi Wesley Girls’ Senior High School in the Ashanti Region, prioritizing youth education to combat foodborne diseases.

Partnering with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the initiative adopts a year-round approach beyond World Food Safety Day (June 7), targeting regions with high vulnerability to contamination.

FDA Director of Food Safety and Consumer Education, Mrs. Faustina Atupra, emphasized practical measures: “70% of foodborne illnesses stem from handlers. Proper hygiene—like handwashing and clean utensils—can prevent most cases.” The campaign, already active in Upper East and Upper West Regions, next targets Western and Central Regions.

Students learned critical practices: avoiding unhygienic street food, thorough produce washing, and safe storage. “I’ll educate my siblings too,” pledged one attendee, reflecting heightened awareness. The push responds to 420,000+ foodborne disease cases recorded in 2023, with diarrheal illnesses dominating child outpatient visits.

Outreach includes training market vendors and plans to scale to more schools and food hubs under the theme “Food Safety: Science in Action.”

MultiChoice Ghana has rejected a proposal by the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, to reduce DStv subscription fees by 30 percent.

In a statement issued on Sunday, August 3, 2025, and signed by its Managing Director, Alex Okyere, the company expressed concern about recent public remarks made by the minister and described the proposed cut as “not tenable.”.

It said any review of subscription rates must take into account the broader economic environment and the need to maintain the quality of service provided to customers.

“While we appreciate the recent appreciation of the cedi, it is not tenable to reduce the DStv subscription fees in the manner proposed by the Minister,” the statement said.

MultiChoice added that it had presented an alternative proposal to both the minister and the National Communications Authority (NCA) as part of continuing discussions to address the pricing concerns.

The company, which has operated in Ghana for over 30 years, said it strives to keep subscription fees as low as possible.

It warned that a forced price reduction could threaten jobs and limit customer choice.

What Sam George said?

Speaking at a press briefing dubbed “Government Accountability Series” in Accra last Friday [August 1, 2025], Mr Sam George gave MultiChoice until August 7 to implement the 30 percent fee cut or face suspension of its broadcasting licence.

The minister described DStv’s pricing in Ghana as unfair, noting that customers pay the equivalent of US$83 for the premium bouquet, compared with US$29 paid by subscribers in Nigeria for the same package.

Mr Sam George rejected suggestions that currency depreciation justifies the price difference, calling the situation “plain stealing” from Ghanaian consumers.

MultiChoice said it remained ready to engage constructively with the government and assured that it would continue to operate within Ghana’s laws and regulations.

Charterhouse Productions has unveiled the Gastro Feastival, a pioneering national initiative set to reposition Ghana’s food ecosystem as an engine for economic growth, cultural preservation, and social inclusion.

Spearheaded by CEO Theresa Ayoade, the December 5–6 event at Accra’s Palms Convention Centre will align with National Farmers’ Day, targeting stakeholders across farming, processing, distribution, and consumption.

“Food is culture, industry, and economic power,” declared Ayoade, framing the festival as a catalyst to address food security, youth employment, and women’s inclusion in agribusiness.

The initiative builds on Charterhouse’s 25th-anniversary “Business Elevate Series,” leveraging Ghana’s culinary heritage—from traditional dishes to beverages like asana and palm wine—while promoting digital innovation and sustainable practices.

Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare endorsed the vision, noting agribusiness employs 60% of Ghana’s workforce despite persistent challenges like post-harvest losses. “Collaboration is key to unlocking our potential,” she urged, as Benjamin Gyan-Kesse of Kosmos Innovation Center highlighted women’s critical role, citing programs like the ‘Empire Her’ Bootcamp for female entrepreneurs.

The festival will blend B2B/B2C engagements, live culinary demonstrations, and seminars focused on six pillars: Sustainability, Women in Agri-Business, Youth Involvement, Export, Funding, and Innovation. Stakeholders including the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Association of Ghana Industries emphasized its potential to drive systemic change.

By bridging farmers, tech innovators, policymakers, and consumers, Gastro Feastival aims to cement Ghana’s position as a global agribusiness leader while celebrating its culinary identity.

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Director of Elections, Evans Nimako, has been captured sharing a light moment with the newly sworn-in Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn, on the premises of the Trinity Congregation of the Presbyterian Church in Kwashieman on August 3, 2025.

In a viral video, Evans Nimako was seen conversing and exchanging pleasantries with the lawmaker in the company of other congregants.

The interaction was brief but warm.

Ewurabena Aubynn was officially sworn into Parliament earlier this month after securing victory in a fiercely contested parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency.

The rerun, conducted across 19 polling stations, followed the Electoral Commission’s (EC) nullification of the original December 2024 parliamentary results due to widespread electoral irregularities.

In the rerun, Aubynn polled 34,090 votes, narrowly edging out the NPP’s Akua Afriyie, who garnered 33,881 votes.

Reduction in DStv subscription fees untenable – MultiChoice claps back at Sam George

Samuel Nartey George is the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation Samuel Nartey George is the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation

Following the announcement by the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, that DStv’s broadcasting license will be suspended if the company fails to reduce its prices by August 7, 2025, MultiChoice has issued a formal response to the directive.

In a statement signed by Managing Director, Alex Okyere, and sighted by GhanaWeb Business, MultiChoice stated that reducing DStv subscription fees is not tenable under the current economic conditions.

The company also dismissed claims that it referred to the recent appreciation of the cedi as a “fluke,” contrary to assertions made by the minister during the Government Accountability Series on Friday, August 1, 2025.

“While we appreciate the recent appreciation of the Cedi (which we have never referred to as a ‘fluke’), it is not tenable to reduce the DStv subscription fees in the manner proposed by the Minister,” part of MultiChoice’s release read.

MultiChoice further reiterated its commitment to constructive engagement with Sam George and to complying with all relevant laws and regulations in Ghana.

“MultiChoice values its subscribers and endeavours at all times to keep DStv subscription fees as low as possible, despite the extremely challenging competitive and macroeconomic environment in which we operate—without compromising on customer choice and the quality of the services we offer,” the statement added.

This development follows remarks made by Sam George on Friday, August 1, 2025, in which he criticized pricing disparities in DStv packages across African countries, including Ghana.

According to the minister, Ghanaians are paying nearly 30 percent more than neighboring countries, arguing that citizens deserve fairer treatment.

He pointed out that the premium bouquet package offered to Ghanaians at the equivalent of $83 is available to Nigerians for just $29.

In June last year, MultiChoice reportedly implemented a $30 price reduction on premium packages in Liberia, despite prices there being comparable to Ghana’s.

Lower-tier bundles were also reduced by $17.

The minister added that MultiChoice cited a 240 percent depreciation of the cedi to justify its pricing, even though the Nigerian naira depreciated by 490 percent during the same period.

He warned that failure to comply with the directive would result in suspension of DStv’s broadcasting license effective Thursday, August 7, 2025.

Kennedy Agyapong Drops Secret Behind Why He No Longer Criticizes Mahama or NDC

0

According to a report by Ghana base, Ghanaian politician Kennedy Agyapong has finally revealed why he has chosen to stay silent on issues concerning former President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In an interview with Pan African Television, the former Assin Central Member of Parliament explained that although he sees mistakes in the Mahama government, he has decided not to criticize them anymore.

According to Agyapong, he was once very vocal against Mahama and the NDC, and his own party (the New Patriotic Party – NPP) supported him at the time. However, things changed when he decided to contest for the NPP’s flagbearer position.

“During my campaign, my own party brought out something they called the ‘Ten Sins of Kennedy Agyapong,’” he revealed. “They used my own words against me — words I said while defending NPP and criticizing NDC.

That’s why I apologized to Mahama, because he has always treated me kindly. I was harsh on him back then, but it was all for the party.”

He added that his criticisms, which were once praised, became tools used to damage his image when he wanted to lead the party. To protect himself from further attacks, Kennedy Agyapong said he will no longer speak on NDC matters.

“In the Bible, there are Ten Commandments. Since Abraham’s time, nobody has added an eleventh. My party gave me ten sins already, and I won’t let them add more. Whether the country is broke or not, we all dey inside,” he said.

Kennedy Agyapong’s comments have sparked reactions, with many seeing it as a sign of deep division within the NPP after the 2024 flagbearer race.

National Candlelight Vigil to mourn legendary Daddy Lumba attracts thousands

By Simon Asare

Accra, Aug. 3, GNA – Thousands of fans gathered at the Independence Square in Accra for the national candlelight vigil in memory of legendary musician Daddy Lumba, who died last week at the age of 60.

It was a solemn atmosphere, with many fans in bewilderment about what had happened over the previous few days.

The candlelight vigil opened with a gospel musical performance by Rev. Thomas Lawson, followed by a spoken word by Oswald the Poet.

There were also prayers said in different languages, including Christian, Akan, and Ga prayers to bless the soul of deceased musician.

Fans were treated to Daddy Lumba’s musical compositions, which elicited emotions, with several crying and others collapsing in the venue.

Mr. Gideon Aryeequaye, Executive Secretary of the Creative Arts Agency, was grateful to Daddy Lumba’s family for joining them at the Independence to celebrate the music icon.

Mr. Aryeequaye asserted that Daddy Lumba was a unique music icon, leaving a void that would never be filled.

Mr. Aryeequaye also pledged governmental support for the final funeral rites of Daddy Lumba, as they were keen on properly honouring the music icon.

The candlelight vigil also witnessed tribute from his wife, Akosua Serwaa, and also his sons and daughters as they eulogised the great music icon.

“How do I begin to speak of a man whose voice carried the soul of a nation? You were not just Ghana’s musical treasure but also my heart’s companion, my protector, and my joy,” excerpts of the wife’s tribute said.

OPEC+ Oil Output Rise May Ease Ghana Fuel Costs, Risks Loom

0

OPEC
OPEC

OPEC+ has agreed to boost oil production by 548,000 barrels per day starting September 2025, potentially lowering global prices and offering relief to fuel-dependent economies like Ghana.

The move reverses 2023 supply cuts and aims to reclaim market share amid recovering demand, with Brent crude currently near $70 per barrel.

For Ghana which imports most of its fuel the increase could translate to reduced pump prices, easing transport costs, inflation, and pressure on the cedi. However, experts warn geopolitical volatility could undermine stability. Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of sanctions on Russian oil buyers, if enacted, might abruptly reverse price trends.

While the decision signals short-term optimism, Ghana’s fuel market remains vulnerable to external shocks. The government and businesses must navigate fluctuating global dynamics to sustain domestic benefits.

MultiChoice responds to Sam George’s comments on DStv pricing in Ghana

0

MultiChoice Ghana has expressed concern over recent public remarks made by the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, regarding the pricing of DStv subscription packages in the country.

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, issued a stern ultimatum to DSTV, warning that the broadcaster’s licence will be suspended by Wednesday, August 7, should it fail to reduce its subscription prices in Ghana in line with regulatory expectations.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Friday, August 1, the Minister revealed that he had formally written to the National Communications Authority (NCA), instructing it to initiate the suspension process if DSTV continues to disregard calls to revise its pricing.

In a statement issued on Sunday, August 3, MultiChoice described the Minister’s comments as regrettable, particularly given the company’s ongoing efforts to engage in open and constructive dialogue with the Minister and the National Communications Authority (NCA) over the matter.

“It is regrettable that the Honourable Minister has taken this stance, notwithstanding our ongoing endeavours to engage with him candidly and in good faith,” the company stated.

MultiChoice indicated that it had submitted a formal proposal to both the Minister and the NCA, suggesting an alternative avenue for further engagement aimed at resolving the issue amicably.

With over 30 years of operation in Ghana, MultiChoice reaffirmed its commitment to its Ghanaian workforce, including employees, dealers, agents, retailers, and installers.

The company acknowledged the potential economic impact an unresolved standoff could have on these stakeholders and assured all parties of its intention to pursue resolution.

“We are mindful of the dire implications that an impasse may have on you and your livelihoods, and we assure you that we are committed to working together with the Honourable Minister and the NCA to resolve this matter,” the statement added.

The company defended its current subscription pricing model, noting that it has made every effort to keep fees as low as possible, even in the face of a highly competitive market and significant macro-economic pressures.

While welcoming the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian Cedi, MultiChoice rejected the suggestion that it had dismissed the currency’s rise as a “fluke”, an accusation implied in earlier commentary.

However, the broadcaster maintained that the type of fee reduction being proposed by the Minister is not “tenable” under current conditions, given the need to sustain service quality and customer choice.

“MultiChoice values its subscribers and endeavours at all times to keep DStv subscription fees as low as possible… without compromising on customer choice and the quality of the services we offer,” the company noted.

The company further reiterated its readiness to continue engaging constructively with the Ministry and relevant authorities.

It also emphasised its commitment to full compliance with Ghanaian laws and regulations.

“MultiChoice remains committed to constructive engagement with the Honourable Minister and to complying with all applicable laws and regulations in Ghana and trusts that the authorities will do likewise,” the statement concluded.

Ex-NEIP Chief Rejects Blame on Bawumia for NPP’s 2024 Loss

0

Bawumia
Bawumia

Former National Entrepreneurship & Innovation Programme (NEIP) CEO Kofi Ofosu Nkansah has called on supporters of Kennedy Agyapong to stop holding Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia solely responsible for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 elections.

In a social media statement, Nkansah highlighted Agyapong’s past remarks that the party “lost the election in 2022” due to economic challenges, asserting this logic implies even an Agyapong candidacy would have failed.

“If Hon. Ken admits we lost in 2022, then his victory in the primaries would still have led to defeat,” Nkansah wrote, stressing the loss resulted from collective governance failures, not Bawumia’s leadership.

He dismissed attempts to distance Agyapong from the previous administration, noting Agyapong chaired the board of state-owned Ghana Gas while his wife held another major board role. “Ken had more influence than 99% of NPP appointees,” Nkansah stated, adding that even his own role leading NEIP made him part of the government.

The intervention underscores ongoing NPP internal debates as the party repositions following its transition to opposition after the 2024 polls.

Ghana Poised to Exceed 2025 Growth Target Amid Industrial Momentum

Deloitte

Ghana’s economy is on track to outperform its 2025 growth projections, fueled by robust industrial expansion and policy reforms like the upcoming 24-Hour Economy Programme, according to a mid-year review by Deloitte Ghana.

The country recorded 5.3% GDP growth in Q1 2025 surpassing both Q1 2024’s 4.9% and the government’s annual 4.0% target signaling strengthening macroeconomic resilience despite global headwinds.

The industry sector, expanding by 6.8%, drove the gains, reflecting returns on recent infrastructure investments and sector-specific support. Deloitte cited this as evidence that “previous investments in industry are yielding results,” positioning Ghana to achieve or exceed its yearly growth goal.

The firm highlighted the 24-Hour Economy Programme as pivotal for sustaining momentum, noting its potential to boost round-the-clock productivity in manufacturing, agro-processing, and logistics.

“If effectively implemented, this initiative will enable government-private sector collaboration to drive sustainable growth with tangible benefits for Ghanaians,” Deloitte stated.

For citizens, this could translate to job creation and improved living standards; for SMEs, opportunities to scale operations in a 24-hour market. As Ghana prepares to roll out the flagship program, Deloitte anticipates a new phase of economic resilience where growth becomes a shared national experience.

Soldiers must be treated as humans, who takes care of their psychological needs? – Security Analyst

File photo of military men File photo of military men

Amid ongoing military operations in Bawku, security analyst, Dr Ishmael Norman has raised concerns over the psychological wellbeing of soldiers deployed to enforce peace in the conflict-ridden area.

Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints programme on Saturday, August 2, 2025, Dr Norman stressed that the emotional and mental health of military personnel should be prioritized equally with that of civilians, especially considering that these soldiers have families anxiously awaiting their return.

“We deploy the soldiers because they are soldiers. But we need to treat them also as human beings… They need help. They need psychological intervention in the field and after the event. We don’t do any of it,” he stated.

The security analyst questioned whether any trained psychologists had been assigned to support troops in Bawku, adding that without proper care, the strain of duty could lead to serious consequences.

“Who is taking care of their wives, their children, their fear?” he quizzed.

Dr Norman warned that a lack of psychological support could cause soldiers to become emotionally overwhelmed, with the risk of them acting out or even turning against the very communities they are meant to protect.

“Before they themselves become weaponized and react in a very negative way to the people they’re there to support and protect, we must do better,” he emphasized.

Despite his concerns, Dr Norman commended the government’s proactive efforts to stabilize the situation in Bawku.

More than 400 security personnel have been deployed under a presidential directive to restore calm.

The Bawku conflict, rooted in decades-old ethnic and chieftaincy tensions, remains one of Ghana’s most complex security challenges.

Authorities argue that restoring order in the Upper East Region is critical to preventing further unrest from spilling into other parts of the country.

Kwabena Kwabena Echoes Daddy Lumba on Highlife Immortality

0

Kwabena Kwabena

Ghanaian highlife musician Kwabena Kwabena has reaffirmed the late legend Daddy Lumba’s enduring stance on the genre’s resilience.

Speaking after a candlelight vigil honoring Daddy Lumba, Kwabena Kwabena recalled the iconic artist’s declaration at the 2003 Ghana Music Awards that “highlife will never die.”

He emphasized that highlife remains intrinsically Ghanaian—crafted by, for, and about the people of Ghana. The vigil, attended by fans and peers, served as both a memorial and a celebration of Daddy Lumba’s influence on the nation’s musical heritage.

Kwabena Kwabena described Daddy Lumba as an eternal legend whose artistic legacy secures highlife’s permanence in Ghanaian culture. His remarks underscored a collective commitment within the industry to preserve the genre’s authenticity.

“He is a legend forever. Just as Daddy Lumba said, highlife will never die. Rest in Peace, Legend,” Kwabena Kwabena stated, mirroring the sentiment that has defined generations of Ghanaian musicians. The tribute highlighted music’s role in uniting communities amid loss.

A Plus Sparks Debate Over Mahama-Era Dam As He Challenges NPP’s One Village One Dam Legacy

0

Ghanaian political commentator and musician Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has stirred fresh controversy over the widely publicized “One Village, One Dam” policy introduced by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. In a pointed social media post, A Plus highlighted an irrigation dam allegedly built under the administration of former President John Dramani Mahama — a project he claims was never flaunted or even listed among Mahama’s achievements.

“This dam was built by John Dramani Mahama for irrigation. He never made noise about it or even counted it among his achievements,” A Plus wrote, referencing the structure located in the Gomoa area. His comments came with a sharp critique of the NPP’s policy, which promised to deliver dams to villages across Ghana to support agriculture and rural livelihoods.

In a sarcastic jab at the quality of some NPP-era dams, he mocked what he described as shallow water structures, comparing them to swimming pools. “If your village benefited from that policy, kindly share photos here. I just want to verify whether it’s truly a dam or just a swimming pool like the one Angel Gabriel and his colleagues are diving into at the cathedral site,” he added, referring to ongoing criticism of the controversial National Cathedral project.

The post, filled with A Plus’s trademark humor and social commentary, challenged supporters of the previous administration to provide evidence of functional, impactful dams built under the One Village, One Dam initiative. He further provoked a reaction with: “They can’t show dam, so they’ll show their insulting skills Let’s meet them in the comments to receive the insults.”

The post was accompanied by hashtags such as #VisitGomoa, #TheBusyTeam, #HalfManHalfBosom, #GomoaToTheWorld, and #Election2024 — all indicating his growing political engagement and support for development in the Gomoa Central area, where he has been actively advocating for change.

Public Reactions and Broader Context

The One Village, One Dam initiative was a flagship promise of the NPP government, led by then-President Nana Akufo-Addo, aimed at ensuring year-round farming and addressing water scarcity in rural communities. However, many critics, including civil society organizations and residents in some beneficiary communities, have questioned the quality, scale, and sustainability of the dams constructed under the program.

Meanwhile, supporters of former President Mahama have argued that many of his government’s infrastructural projects — including roads, schools, and water facilities — were delivered without the kind of heavy PR and branding associated with subsequent administrations.

As the 2024 general elections approach, political tensions and public discourse around developmental projects are intensifying. A Plus, known for being outspoken and unapologetically critical of political hypocrisy, continues to use his platform to question narratives, stir conversations, and, at times, troll political opponents with sharp wit.

Whether this particular irrigation dam will become a symbol of silent delivery or political misrepresentation remains to be seen. But one thing is certain — the debate is alive, and the comments section is heating up.

Barker-Vormawor criticises handling of Unibank case, cites elite impunity

Political activist and commentator Oliver Barker-Vormawor has criticised the handling of the Unibank case.

According to him, it reflects a broader pattern of impunity among Ghana’s elites.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, August 2,2025, Barker-Vormawor said the trend where powerful individuals involved in financial scandals are not made to face consequences of thier actions is fast becoming a routine.

“Unibank case: it seems we’ve grown accustomed to elites getting away with crimes. I perceive lack of consequences for powerful individuals implicated in financial scandal”, he said.

He argued that while ordinary citizens often face swift and severe penalties, elites benefit from prolonged court proceedings or dropped charges.

“When the powerful can navigate the justice system with impunity, you lose faith in governance itself,” Barker-Vormawor indicated.

He called on the Attorney General’s Department and the courts to ensure such cases are handled transparently and in accordance with the rule of law.

According to him, swift and fair adjudication is necessary to restore credibility to Ghana’s justice system.

Ghana Pitches Feed Ghana Program to Global Agribusiness Investors

Ghana is positioning its Feed Ghana agricultural initiative as a prime investment platform for modernizing farming and scaling climate-resilient food production.

At the Ghana-Nebraska Agribusiness Chamber forum in Accra, Eric Hatudson Asamani, Greater Accra Regional Director of Agriculture, outlined high-value opportunities across the value chain—from mechanization and irrigation to commodity processing—amid growing climate and food security pressures.

Asamani spotlighted critical gaps ripe for investment, noting Ghana’s mere five central pivot irrigation systems as insufficient given the country’s agricultural potential. “Climate change makes this a huge opportunity.

We have water bodies; investors can develop dugouts for commercial farming,” he stated, emphasizing needs in soybean, maize, poultry, and tree crop infrastructure. He also highlighted Ghana’s competitive advantages: political stability, English proficiency, and strategic West African positioning.

The forum deepened U.S.-Ghana agribusiness ties, with GNEBCham Co-Founder Alberta Nana Akyea Akosa advocating collective action: “We’re pursuing commercial farm projects to export sustainably at volume.” Ken Schilz, former Nebraska State Senator and fellow co-founder, confirmed American partners are developing smaller, practical machinery for Ghana’s needs while stressing long-term collaboration. Ongoing talks with Ghana’s Agriculture Ministry aim to align bilateral efforts.

As climate threats intensify, the Feed Ghana program emerges as a central policy tool to attract technology transfers and build resilient food systems through strategic investment.

President Mahama to open African Health Sovereignty Summit

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, Aug 03, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama will on Tuesday, August 5, open the African Health Sovereignty Summit Meeting in Accra.

A statement issued by Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidential Spokesman and Minister of State in-charge of Government Communications, acknowledged that significant progress had been made in global health over recent decades: Child mortality has been halved since 1990, maternal deaths have decreased by over 40 per cent since 2000, HIV/AIDS deaths have been halved since 2010, and 1.4 billion people now enjoy healthier lives thanks to improved tobacco control, cleaner air, and better access to clean water, sanitation, and healthcare.

It said, however, these gains were at risk.

The statement noted that shifting geopolitics, diminished multilateralism, reduced donor funding, and emerging health threats had exposed significant structural flaws in the global health system.

It said the current global health governance framework—designed in a different era—no longer adequately reflects today’s political, economic, or demographic realities.

The statement said reform was now crucial; it was urgent both nationally and internationally.

It said countries must take greater responsibility for their health governance and funding.

It said globally, there was an immediate need to overhaul health governance systems.

It stated that in response, this African-led global gathering would advance multiple initiatives to mobilise global partners and global consensus to address these challenges.

The statement said the Summit would deliberate and formally endorse The Accra Initiative.

This bold, action-oriented outcome document would establish shared principles, benchmarks, and a roadmap for reforming global health governance in alignment with national priorities for health sovereignty.

The statement said four key outcomes of the Summit would include:

Creation of a Presidential High-Level Panel to design a roadmap for a re-imagined global health governance architecture aligned with national and international efforts.

Commitment to core principles of inclusivity, leadership, accountability, resilience, sustainable funding, and cross-sector collaboration.

Launch of the SUSTAIN Initiative to promote country-led and investment-driven health systems, powered by domestic resources, private sector engagement, philanthropic partnerships, and technical expertise.

And endorsement of the Accra Compact, articulating Africa’s vision for health sovereignty and a more equitable global health order.

The statement said this Summit builds on the ongoing efforts of President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and African Union institutions to improve health financing and continental health coordination.

It said however, it also calls for urgent reform of global health governance to better reflect the realities of a changed world, where Africa’s voice and leadership must take centre stage.

It said the Summit follows President Mahama’s passionate speech in June 2025 at the Global Summit on Health and Prosperity in Brussels and draws inspiration from his leadership during the 2014 Ebola outbreak, where he directed regional efforts to control the epidemic, showcasing Africa’s capacity to respond to crises with unity and determination.

The statement reiterated that that same spirit of continental and global solidarity now underpins the Accra Compact.

“Africa must take charge of its health destiny—not in isolation, but through determined, coordinated action.

“This Summit is our moment to lead not only in financing our systems but also in reshaping the rules that govern global health—rules that must reflect the voices and realities of our people”, President Mahama said about the Summit.

Reducing subscription fees not tenable

MultiChoice, operators of DStv in Ghana, has firmly rejected calls by the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Mr. Samuel Nartey George, to reduce subscription fees.

In a statement signed by Alex Okyere, Managing Director of DSTV Ghana and issued on Sunday, August 3, the company reaffirmed its commitment to keeping prices as low as possible without compromising service quality, but added that reducing subscription fees as proposed by the minister is not tenable.

“MultiChoice values its subscribers and endeavours at all times to keep DStv subscription fees as low as possible, despite the extremely challenging competitive and macro-economic environment in which we operate, without compromising on customer choice and the quality of the services we offer,” the statement read.

While acknowledging the recent appreciation of the Ghana cedi, the company pushed back on the feasibility of reducing prices in the way suggested by the Minister.

“It is not tenable to reduce the DStv subscription fees in the manner proposed by the Minister,” it stated, stressing that it has never referred to the cedi’s appreciation as a “fluke.”

Describing the Minister’s comments made on Friday, August 1, as regrettable, MultiChoice noted that they came despite ongoing efforts to engage constructively and in good faith.

“It is regrettable that the Honourable Minister has taken this stance, notwithstanding our ongoing endeavours to engage with the Honourable Minister candidly and in good faith on this important matter,” it said.

The company revealed that it had already presented a proposal to both the Minister and the National Communications Authority (NCA) to explore alternative avenues for further discussions.

Having operated in Ghana for over 30 years, MultiChoice said it remained mindful of the impact a potential impasse could have on its workforce and partners.

“We are mindful of the dire implications that an impasse may have on you and your livelihoods, and we assure you that we are committed to working together with the Honourable Minister and the NCA to resolve this matter,” it added.

MultiChoice concluded by reiterating its commitment to lawful operations and constructive dialogue with the relevant authorities.

“MultiChoice remains committed to constructive engagement with the Honourable Minister and to complying with all applicable laws and regulations in Ghana and trusts that the authorities will do likewise,” the statement concluded.

Accra’s cultural scene opens August with a national candlelight vigil honoring late highlife icon Daddy Lumba at Black Star Square on Saturday, August 2.

The tribute, featuring musical homages, celebrates the legend’s enduring legacy—a theme echoed in Tuesday’s “Highlife Tuesday” event at Bella Afrik, where timeless classics will fill Liberation Road.

Film enthusiasts can immerse in visions of the future at the Accra Indie Filmfest’s “Disruption” showcase, running daily from August 4–9 at Alliance Française. Meanwhile, theater takes center stage with “Makola Queens – The Musical” at the National Theatre on August 1, a community production weaving story, music, and lyrics by Nii Dromo Yartey and Poetra Asantewa.

Live music pulses across the city: Slow Jamz’ 90s classics at Exhale Lounge (August 1), soulful interludes by Esikyere Band at Gold Coast Restaurant (August 1), and Palm Wine sessions with Kwanpa Band at Zen Garden (August 5). The month crescendos on August 16 with Afro Cari Soul Food Experience in Osu—a fusion of art, conversation, and Caribbean-inspired dining.

Ghana Business Confidence Climbs Steadily Amid Economic Gains

Accra
Accra

Business confidence in Ghana continues its sustained recovery, with companies expressing growing optimism about their prospects and the broader economic landscape.

According to the Bank of Ghana’s Summary of Macroeconomic and Financial Data, the Business Confidence Index rose from 88.8 in September 2024 to 105.5 by June 2025, crossing into optimistic territory (above 100) in March. This upward trajectory signals increasing corporate trust in the operating environment, reflecting expectations of near-term stability.

The improved sentiment aligns with strengthening real economic indicators. Ghana’s GDP grew 5.3% year-on-year in Q1 2025, accelerating from 3.6% in Q4 2024. Growth spanned all major sectors: industry expanded by 5.1%, services by 5.9%, and agriculture also recorded gains. The Composite Index of Economic Activity, tracking pulse points like port traffic and energy consumption, maintained a 6.0% annual growth rate through mid-2025.

Easing inflation has further bolstered confidence. Headline inflation dropped steadily from 23.8% in December 2024 to 13.7% by June 2025. Food inflation cooled sharply from nearly 28% to 16.3%, while non-food inflation slid to 11.4%. These declines have reduced cost pressures for businesses and created more predictable conditions for investment planning.

With output rising, price pressures moderating, and broader signs of stability emerging, Ghanaian firms increasingly focus on forward planning rather than defensive measures against economic shocks.

GADone Records, a label under which Ghanaian rapper Kofi Jamar has been signed, has debunked some allegations made by the musician.

On August 1, 2025, Kofi Jamar took to his X page to level a series of allegations at the record label, claiming that he has been neglected even though his contract with the organisation hadn’t expired.

According to the musician, he has reached out to the label numerous times, seeking clarity on his future; however, every effort has proven futile.

In a recent development, the label in a statement issued on August 2, 2025, described the musician’s claims as untrue.

According to GADone Records, the musician is still under the label and yet to fulfil his key obligations under the contract.

The label in its statement claimed that the musician has been engaging in numerous breaches of contract, such as unauthorised release of songs through a personal distributor without their knowledge.

“As of today, he is has yet to fulfil all his key obligations under the contract. Also, there have been repeated breaches of contract by the artiste, notably the unauthorised release of music through personal distributor accounts and engagement in business activities without the label’s consent,” the statement reads.

GADone Records added that Kofi Jamar has access to both a designated manager and the label’s regional head; therefore, claims of being ignored are lies.

“Additionally, at all material times, the artiste has had full and ongoing access to both his designated managers and the label’s regional head. Accordingly, any claims that the label neglected or ignored the artiste are unfounded,” the statement added.

Ghanaian businessman and politician, Kennedy Agyapong, has advised entrepreneurs to avoid involving family members in their businesses to avoid collapse.

Speaking on the Connected Minds Podcast, Kennedy Agyapong said it is important for these business owners to take calculated risks and invest wisely.

He warned that relying on relatives in Ghana could be detrimental.

Kennedy Agyapong explained that some family members mismanage businesses or siphon funds to start their own ventures, leaving the original enterprise vulnerable.

He said, “You have to take risk and invest the money, but make sure if you want to succeed here, this side of the world, especially Ghana, don’t rely on your relatives. No, don’t, don’t involve your brothers, sisters, family members in your business, except maybe your children or wife.”

“Because this side of the world, your brother, when you set up your business and leave it in the hands of your brother to manage, he would then take the money and go and establish his own and you also collapse.”

Agyapong added that such betrayal often sparks even deeper frustrations, as the wider family may side with the wrongdoer when the original business owner speaks out.

“When you complain, your whole family will go against you. So please don’t get them involved,” he cautioned.

Organise befitting funeral for Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah- Nana Yaa Jantuah to Prez Mahama

0

By Godwill Arthur-Mensah

Accra, Aug.03, GNA – Nana Yaa Jantuah, a former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party, has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama, to organise a befitting funeral for Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President.

She alleged that Nkrumah’s mortal remains were brought to Ghana “scattered and shuttered”, therefore, it would be proper to organise a funeral in his memory to enable the soul of Nkrumah to rest properly.

Nana Yaa Jantuah made the appeal during the launch of the 2025 Nkrumah Festival at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra over the weekend.

Dr Kwame Nkrumah died on April 27,1972, in Bucharest, Romania. He was first buried in Guinea, his adopted country after his overthrow as Ghana’s President in 1966.

His body was exhumed and brought to Ghana and was reburied in his hometown in Nkroful in 1992 and was later brought to Accra for reburial at the Kwame Museum, otherwise, known as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

This year’s NkrumahFest, which will also commemorate Nkrumah’s 116th birthday is on the theme, “Celebrating Nkrumah’s Enduring Impact”.

The celebration will witness a pilgrimage of people from Accra to Nkroful, the birthplace of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, to learn the values and vision of Ghana’s first President and Founder of the nation.

Nana Jantuah urged all political parties that believe in Nkrumah’s political ideology to come together to “fight their political nemesis”.

She urged Ghanaians and Africans in general to unite towards combating “poverty, disease and corruption”.

Some of the activities lined-up for NkrumahFest include a clean-up exercise on September 15th and 16th, Osagyefo Football Cup, public symposium, candal night carnival, durbar of chiefs, visit to historic sites in Nkroful and adjoining communities, and cutting of anniversary cake on 21st September to mark Nkrumah’s 116th birthday to climax the celebration.
