Gov’t knew it couldn’t quietly kill Duffuor trial – Martin Amidu

0

Martin Amidu has slammed current Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, accusing him of using “prosecutorial discretion” as a smokescreen to protect political allies in the controversial discontinuation of the criminal trial involving Dr. Kwabena Duffuor and seven others.

Former Attorney General and Special Prosecutor, in a hard-hitting open letter, alleged that the government’s decision to enter a nolle prosequi in the Republic vs. Kwabena Duffuor & 7 Others (CR/0248/2020) case was deliberately designed to abort public accountability and shield powerful figures accused of financial crimes.

BOST embraces renewable future with major solar energy drive

0

The Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST) is embarking on a transformative energy initiative, which seeks to roll out solar power systems across its key fuel depots as part of a broader green transition strategy.

The move, which aligns with Ghana’s Energy Transition Framework, is expected to significantly cut operational costs, reduce emissions, and boost the country’s clean energy ambitions.

The national framework targets a 10% reduction in emissions by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070.

As part of the initiative, BOST has established a Green Transition and Alternative Fuels Department tasked with leading the company’s shift toward more sustainable operations.

Solar panel installations are already underway at the Buipe and Kumasi depots, with Tema scheduled next.

These installations will provide power for critical functions such as pumps, lighting, and monitoring systems, replacing the reliance on costly diesel generators.

“Energy is one of BOST’s biggest expenses, and with diesel prices still above GH¢12 per litre, the shift to solar is smart economics,” Managing Director of BOST Afetsi Awoonor said in a statement.

He mentioned that the transition is not only expected to yield cost savings but also open potential revenue opportunities through Ghana’s emerging carbon credit market.

“Each solar-powered depot contributes to the national emission-reduction target, reinforcing BOST’s role in the country’s sustainable energy future. This marks a deliberate commitment to lowering emissions, reducing energy costs, and aligning BOST’s operations with Ghana’s long-term energy agenda,” Awoonor added.

The company’s efforts come at a time when Ghana has intensified its national climate action with the establishment of the Ministry of Green Transition by President John Dramani Mahama.

The newly created ministry, led by John Abdulai Jinapor is further strengthened by the Climate Change and Sustainability Secretariat, which are championing a coordinated push across sectors to green the economy, build climate resilience, and attract green finance.

Initiatives like BOST’s solar rollout demonstrate government’s alignment with this agenda and signal a growing commitment across state institutions to move from fossil-heavy systems to cleaner, smarter energy models.

While acknowledging the challenges of solar integration, including the need for technical skills and system maintenance, BOST sees the shift as essential for building long-term resilience and relevance.

“This transition is not about abandoning oil overnight. It’s about staying relevant in a world that is moving forward, toward cleaner, smarter energy,” Afetsi Awoonor

More than 1,000 people arrested over deadly Angola fuel protests

Parts of the capital, Luanda, came to a standstill on Monday Parts of the capital, Luanda, came to a standstill on Monday

Police in Angola say five people, including a police officer, have been killed and more than 1,200 have been arrested after demonstrations in the capital, Luanda.

What began as a three-day strike by taxi drivers against rising petrol prices has escalated into one of the most widespread and disruptive waves of protest the country has seen in recent years.

Thousands of people joined demonstrations in the capital on Monday that saw roads blocked, shops looted, cars destroyed as well as clashes between demonstrators and police.

The police also reported attempted demonstrations and looting in the provinces of Icolo e Bengo and Huambo, which they now say have been contained.

Pockets of protests had continued in Luanda on Tuesday, along with further clashes with police and more looting of shops.

The unrest has also involved reports of gunfire in parts of the capital.

“The fuel price issue is just the last straw that has reignited widespread public discontent… People are fed up. Hunger is rife, and the poor are becoming miserable,” a prominent local activist, Laura Macedo, told the BBC.

The strike was called by taxi operators in response to the government’s decision to raise the price of diesel by over 33%, a measure introduced in early July as part of plans to remove fuel subsidies in the oil-rich nation.

Not only has this resulted in higher fares for urban Angolans who rely on the taxis, but it has also driven up the price of staple foods and other basics – as suppliers who transport those goods by road are passing on their additional costs to consumers.

But President João Lourenço has dismissed such concerns, saying that protesters are using petrol prices as a pretext to undermine the government.

“Even after the increase, the price of diesel in Angola remains around 40 US cents [per litre], and there are not many countries in the world with prices this low,” he told CNN Portugal in a recent interview.

The average monthly wage in Angola is just 70,000 kwanzas ($75; £56), and a promise by the presidency to increase this to 100,000 kwanzas has not materialised.

As frustrations spilled over on Monday, groups of protesters took to the streets in various parts of Luanda, chanting against fuel price increases, nearly five decades of rule by the governing MPLA party and expressing their frustration with the country’s current state of affairs.

State-run media in Angola came under heavy criticism on social media for continuing with its regular programming and failing to cover the demonstrations.

By Monday evening, the MPLA warned young people not to join the protests and said that these “acts of vandalism are deliberately intended to tarnish and hinder the joyful celebration” of Angola’s 50th anniversary of independence.

Local authorities in Luanda on Monday also issued a public statement expressing “deep concern” over the events, which they described as “disturbances and acts of vandalism associated with the forced halting of taxi services”.

According to the statement, the strike originally announced by taxi organisations had been called off following negotiations with authorities.

However, it said, “groups of unidentified individuals, without any legitimate representation of the taxi sector, resumed the call for strike actions, promoting intimidation and violence, including attacks on vehicles circulating on public roads, even those not providing taxi services”.

Much of these protests have been spontaneous in nature.

A major taxi association, Anata, has distanced itself from Monday’s violence but vowed to continue the three-day strike, saying “the voice of the taxi drivers reflects the outcry of the Angolan people”.

As of Wednesday afternoon, major shops, banks and other businesses have remained closed. Some civil servants have returned to work, but many people who work for private companies have stayed at home on the advice of their employers.

Police warn they are patrolling the streets and will continue to “intervene where there are still disturbances” to “re-establish public order and peace”.

It’s not true that Akufo-Addo constructed 10,800km of road – Roads Minister

0

Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has said it not factual that the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government constructed 10,800 km of roads in the country.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, the Minister claimed that a nationwide inspection of roads conducted shortly after he assumed office contradicted the claims of the erstwhile government.

50-year-old woman dies after falling into abandoned galamsey pit at Mpasatia

A 50-year-old woman, popularly known as Auntie Akos, has tragically died after falling into an abandoned mining pit at the Mpasatia Community Miner Site in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred as she walked through the area and accidentally slipped into one of the many abandoned (illegal mining) pits that litter the site.

Nearby workers rushed to her aid and managed to retrieve her from the pit. She was immediately transported to the Frimpong Boateng Clinic at Toase but was sadly pronounced dead on arrival.

The tragic incident has reignited concerns over the increasing number of unregulated and unrehabilitated mining pits in the region, which continue to endanger lives.

Residents are urging the Minerals Commission and local authorities to urgently reclaim or secure these abandoned sites to prevent future tragedies.

“This should not keep happening. These pits have become death traps, and something must be done now,” a resident said.

Diversify investments, strengthen governance post-DDEP

The National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) has called on the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to undertake deeper governance reforms and diversify its investment portfolio to safeguard the pension fund against future economic shocks.

The recommendation follows the impact of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), which substantially reduced returns on fixed-income investments and highlighted the risks of concentrated asset strategies.

Speaking at the launch of SSNIT’s 60th anniversary celebrations, NPRA Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Victor Azuma Mejida, acknowledged SSNIT’s progress in expanding coverage and implementing administrative reforms.

However, he cautioned that previous economic disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic to the recent debt restructuring revealed systemic vulnerabilities.

“Going forward, it is important to reflect on these valuable lessons to remain agile in protecting income and investment security for stakeholders in the face of economic shocks. The DDEP served as a stark reminder that even the most trusted assets carry risks,” Mejida stated.

He urged SSNIT’s board and management to pursue reforms that improve governance, broaden investment choices, embrace innovation, and enhance operational efficiency.

“Let us ensure that, regardless of economic hardship or fiscal turbulence, our pension systems are resilient enough to honour their social contract with contributors and pensioners,” he said.

‘I don’t think anybody can do what Lumba did within 60 years’

0

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GhanaWeb, the country’s biggest online media portal, David Antwi, has shared his profound memories of the late Highlife legend, Daddy Lumba.

In a media interaction on July 29, 2025, following a visit to the late Lumba’s residence to commiserate with the bereaved family, David Antwi shared how the musician’s songs have shaped the lives of many music lovers.

According to David Antwi, the late Daddy Lumba was an icon, adding that his music will continue to live with Ghanaians for a longer period of time.

“Most of us grew up listening to Daddy Lumba in times of joy, sorrow, partying, outdooring, whether you are in Ghana or outside, everybody knows Daddy Lumba… I don’t think there is a Ghanaian who can say they do not know Daddy Lumba.

“He was an icon, he is somebody who has done almost all there is to do. It is unbelievable that in this short space of time, the number of materials he has been able to generate. It is going to be with us for years to come,” he said.

David Antwi, in his submission, also expressed profound gratitude to the late musician for contributing immensely to Ghana’s entertainment space.

He added that no Ghanaian could have done what the late musician achieved within 60 years.

“Despite the sad passing, we are at the same time appreciative of all that he has been able to do for us while he was with us. These songs are going to be with us, our children, and grandchildren for many years to come.

“I don’t think anybody else could have done what he did within these 60 years. We are very grateful to Daddy Lumba,” he added.

Suspension of Chief Justice part of plot to control courts — NPP

CJ Torkornoo was suspended after Council of State concluded she had a case to answer in 3 petitions CJ Torkornoo was suspended after Council of State concluded she had a case to answer in 3 petitions

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned the suspension of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing it as a politically motivated act designed to weaken the judiciary and compromise democratic governance.

Addressing a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down on Tuesday, July 29, the General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, accused the NDC administration of engaging in a deliberate scheme to take control of the courts and influence judicial outcomes in its favour.

“This disgraceful act is a direct attempt to cripple judicial independence and bend the course of justice to serve the agenda of the ruling party,” he stated.

“Indeed, it is a dangerous precedent that threatens the very foundation of our democracy,” he added.

According to him, this is the first time in Ghana’s democratic history that a sitting Chief Justice has been suspended in such a manner and under circumstances which they believe are both reckless and alarming.

Frimpong Kodua warned that the suspension of the Chief Justice is not an isolated incident but part of a broader political strategy by the government to capture state institutions, beginning with the judiciary.

“It is a well-orchestrated attempt by this government to exert undue influence over our judicial system, and by extension, our democracy,” he alleged.

He also raised concerns about recent judicial rulings which he called “questionable judgments” from some courts in recent weeks.

“We are not surprised by the recent pronouncements of some courts. We live in this country and see what is happening. Some of the judgments delivered are highly questionable,” he said.

Frimpong Kodua urged members of the judiciary to remain firm and impartial in their constitutional duties, cautioning them not to allow political actors to dictate the outcomes of cases.

“They should not allow political parties, particularly the government of the day, to dictate how they administer justice,” he urged.

“You swore an oath of office to protect fundamental human rights and safeguard our Constitution. We call on you to stand by it, abide by it, and not allow political actors to influence your judgments,” he added.

The General Secretary called on civil society organisations, the Ghana Bar Association, and religious leaders to stand firm against what they call an emerging culture of executive overreach.

John Awuah predicts bold rate cut to boost lending and growth

0

John Awuah is the CEO of the Ghana Association of Banks John Awuah is the CEO of the Ghana Association of Banks

The CEO of the Ghana Association of Banks, John Awuah, says the banking industry is anticipating a significant cut, about two percentage points, in the Bank of Ghana’s policy rate, as the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) concludes its three-day meeting today, Wednesday, July 30, 2025.

Speaking to Citi Business News, Awuah stated that current economic conditions, particularly the decline in inflation to 13.7%, support a major reduction in the 28% policy rate.

“So we are all watching closely. We are expecting something significant, around 200 basis points. If the policy rate comes down, and comes down aggressively, it will directly affect the Ghana Reference Rate, which will eventually feed into a reduction in lending rates,” he said.

Banks view a possible rate cut as the logical next step following months of falling inflation and a stable currency.

The MPC’s decision is expected to influence borrowing costs, investor confidence, inflation expectations, and access to credit in the second half of 2025.

Awuah also noted that lending rates are shaped by the policy rate, the interbank rate, and Treasury bill rates. A cut in the policy rate, he explained, could help reduce overall interest rates in the market.

Former Ghana captain André Ayew, now 35, is back where his football journey began, training at Nania Park on the University of Ghana campus, preparing for the 2025–26 season and searching for a new club after his Le Havre contract expired.

On Tuesday evening, July 29, 2025, Ayew was spotted chatting casually with fans before diving into a solo training session.

He worked through stretching routines and light running drills, watched on proudly by those who recognise his long, storied career.

Ayew joined Le Havre in the summer of 2024 on a free transfer, and in the 2024–25 Ligue 1 season, made 27 appearances, scoring 4 goals and providing 1 assist, contributions that helped them avoid relegation with a historic final-day win over Strasbourg.

In total, he ended his stint with 9 goals and 1 assist in 46 appearances for the club across two seasons in France’s top tier.

As a veteran with experience in Ligue 1, the Premier League, Turkey, and Qatar, Ayew remains an attractive option for clubs seeking leadership and creativity on the flanks.

Reports suggest teams in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East are monitoring his availability.

Alan mourns Obogu crash victims, calls for urgent road safety reforms

0

Founder and leader of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, has extended heartfelt condolences to the Obogu community in the Ashanti Region following a tragic accident on the Juaso–Nkawkaw highway that claimed at least 15 lives.

In a statement dated July 29, 2025, Mr. Kyerematen described the incident—which involved members of the Obogu Saviour Church, including the children of the church’s head pastor—as an “unspeakable tragedy” and a painful loss for the entire nation.

“Words cannot capture the depth of grief that this accident has cast over the Obogu community, and indeed, our entire nation,” the statement read.

“No parent should ever have to bury their child, and no community should have to mourn so many of its young and faithful in a single moment.”

Mr. Kyerematen also expressed sympathy to those injured in the crash, offering prayers for their full and speedy recovery.

Beyond his condolences, the former Trade Minister issued a strong call for action on Ghana’s persistent road safety crisis.

He described the nation’s highways as “death traps” and attributed the high incidence of road fatalities to human negligence, weak enforcement of traffic laws, poor road conditions, and systemic failure.

“Ghana is bleeding on its roads,” he declared. “Year after year, we lose thousands of precious lives not because of war or natural disaster but because of inaction. This is unacceptable. This must stop.”

He urged the government, the National Road Safety Authority, law enforcement agencies, and transport unions to immediately strengthen safety protocols and enforce traffic regulations without fear or favour.

“This tragedy must be a turning point for road safety in Ghana,” Mr. Kyerematen added. “Let this horrific incident serve as a national wake-up call. We owe it to those we lost in Obogu—and to every Ghanaian—to demand and deliver a safer Ghana.”

Safeguarding data and preventing fraud

Security consultant, Nana Kweku Ofori Atta Security consultant, Nana Kweku Ofori Atta

In an era where digital transformation is crucial for national development, the call for a secure centralised database system in Ghana is both timely and essential. Ensuring robust and secure record-keeping across various governmental institutions is paramount to protecting data from vulnerabilities.

Key institutions such as the Economic and Organised Crime Office (E O C O), Registrar General’s Department, Births and Deaths Registry, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Ports and Harbors Authority, Electricity Company of Ghana, National Identification Authority, Electoral Commission, the Ghana Police Service , all the security services and the Ghana Revenue Authority, among others, should be integrated into a single, centralised database. This integration would facilitate the seamless validation of licenses, renewal of passports, driving licenses, national identification cards, and electoral registration and monitoring.

Enhancing Security and Efficiency

A centralised database system will play a critical role in streamlining operations across these institutions, enhancing the efficiency of data retrieval and validation processes. This system will provide a reliable platform for investigations and background checks on all eligible citizens and foreigners intending to establish businesses in Ghana. By doing so, it will prevent fraudulent individuals from obtaining permits to operate illegally.

For example, before the Registrar General issues certification to corporations, comprehensive criminal background checks on board directors and even sole proprietorships should be mandatory. This level of scrutiny is currently lacking and needs to be addressed to safeguard the business environment from unscrupulous actors.

Financial Transactions and Data Security

Moreover, integrating all bank transactions into the national centralised database will significantly enhance data protection and aid in tracking fraudulent activities. With a robust cyber insurance policy, citizens can be assured of protection against potential cyber threats and data breaches. Such policies will ensure that telecommunications companies and the Electricity Company of Ghana are proactive in addressing internet service challenges and safeguarding user data.

Regulatory Framework for Internet Service Providers

To further bolster cybersecurity, it is imperative to establish laws regulating internet service providers (ISPs) and domain name registrars. These regulations should prevent the proliferation of platforms used to perpetrate scams and defraud innocent citizens. Ensuring that ISPs adhere to stringent security protocols will help in curbing online fraud and protecting user data.

Legislative Support for Cybersecurity

In addition to the existing Data Protection Act, Ghana must implement a comprehensive cyber insurance policy. This policy should mandate private telecommunications companies, the Electricity Company of Ghana, and other critical infrastructure providers to adopt proactive measures in mitigating internet service challenges. Such legislation will not only protect citizens but also enhance the overall resilience of the nation’s digital infrastructure.

Conclusion

The establishment of a centralized database system in Ghana is a critical step towards enhancing data security, improving operational efficiency, and combating fraud. By integrating key governmental institutions into a single, secure platform, the nation can ensure accurate record-keeping and facilitate seamless validation processes. Coupled with stringent regulatory frameworks and cyber insurance policies, Ghana can build a resilient and secure digital ecosystem that safeguards its citizens and fosters a trustworthy business environment.

Implementing these measures will require concerted efforts from all stakeholders, including the government, private sector, and civil society. However, the benefits of such a system far outweigh the challenges, paving the way for a more secure and prosperous Ghana.

NPP deserves some credit for the current cedi stability – Joe Jackson

0

Chief Executive Officer of Dalex Finance, Joe Jackson, says the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) deserves some credit for the recent stability of the Ghana cedi.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show during a discussion on the 2024 Mid-Year Budget, Mr. Jackson said while the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) is now managing the economy, some of the progress began under the NPP before they left office.

“Ghana’s economy can be likened to a sick patient who suffered a stroke,” he said.

“In 2022, 2023, and early 2024, we were in the throes of a lot of pain. But by the end of 2024, things were getting better.”

He acknowledged that the economy is still recovering, but stressed that earlier interventions by the NPP contributed to the current state.

“We’ve moved from intensive care in six months to physiotherapy. Yes, we are still in the ward. Yes, we need daily monitoring. Yes, there are going to be possible setbacks. But let’s credit, one those who did the initial care and even more, the new regime of doctors.”

Mr Jackson pointed out that the NDC, since taking over power, has also introduced new measures that have supported recovery. “With the change in doctors, we also changed the medication,” he said. “And the doctors applied a far more rigorous regimen… and we saw a significant jump.”

Commenting on the politicisation of exchange rate comparisons, he cautioned against misleading arguments. “You can’t be talking about forex rates on one hand and then turn around and say it never got to 15 or 17. Let’s stop comparing apples and oranges,” he said.

He urged political commentators to make fair comparisons. “Say what you like, compare Bank of Ghana rates, we’ve still come down from 13–14 to 10.5. Take forex rates, and you will still see a reduction. So it’s neither here nor there.”

Mr Jackson added that while the opposition is not expected to praise the governing party, some of the criticisms are expected. “The role of the opposition is not to cheer the party in power. So, some of it, I hear it, I discount it, and I move on,” he stated.

“Makra Mo”: A Legend’s Farewell

Daddy Lumba

“You’ve seen me today — let’s not do anything else. Maybe you’ll never see me again…” — Daddy Lumba

Ghana has lost not just a musician, but a generational spirit. The man born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, known as Daddy Lumba, died peacefully on Saturday, July 26, 2025. He was 60. His death, confirmed by the family, plunged the country into mourning, with tributes pouring in.

The BBC ran the headline, “Greatest in 100 Years,” capturing in just four words what generations of Ghanaians have felt in their hearts: that Daddy Lumba was not merely a musician, but a once-in-a-century phenomenon, a lyrical prophet, a musical chameleon, a spiritual father of Ghanaian highlife, and a voice that cradled the nation’s joy and pain.

With over 30 albums and about 200 songs, it was widely said, “Daddy Lumba has a song for every Ghanaian”. Not even one was a bad song. For many Ghanaians, he was a cultural icon, and his music touched countless lives.

Born on September 29, 1964, in Nsuta, Ashanti Region, Daddy Lumba emerged from humble beginnings to become one of Ghana’s most iconic musicians.

In the 1980s, life took him to Germany, where his music career took root. His career, spanning over three decades, began with the release of “Yereye Aka Akwantuo Mu” alongside fellow musician Nana Acheampong under the moniker Lumba Brothers, an album that introduced his versatile voice and knack for storytelling. That album changed the landscape of modern highlife music and marked the birth of his solo career that would go on to redefine Ghanaian music.

Daddy Lumba’s music evolved with the times, blending traditional highlife with contemporary rhythms, earning him accolades and a revered place in the hearts of both young and old. His ability to address universal issues such as love, betrayal, mortality, resilience, and life in a broader sense made him a cultural touchstone, as evidenced by the outpouring of tributes following his passing.

“Makra Mo”: Beyond A Song

Daddy Lumba released countless and timeless hits that engraved into Ghanaian consciousness, songs that played at weddings, parties, funerals, lovers’ hideaways, and political rallies alike. Yet among the many he gifted the world, the “Makra Mo” song stands apart.

In it, Lumba sings “You’ve heard me speak today, let my song bring you joy…” It is eerie now, prophetic, even how “Makra Mo” encapsulated his preparedness for his departure. The song was not just a beautiful melody but a poetic exit letter, a heart-to-heart between a man and his people.

He knew, perhaps, that there would be a day when he wouldn’t be here to sing anymore. And so, he recorded his goodbye ahead of time, set to melody, dressed in chords.

“Maybe You’ll Never See Me Again”

In the wake of his passing, Ghanaians have responded with an outpouring of grief that mirrors the depth of their love for Lumba. Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama wrote: “Lumba’s unmatched musical genius provided the soundtrack to our lives, carrying us through various phases of life. The beats to his memorable songs may have died down, but his enduring legacy will echo through the ages.”

For Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Daddy Lumba was “a pantheon among musical greats of all time and had a special connection with his fans and the entire nation.” Lumba’s song for Nana Addo’s presidential bid is regarded as one of the most popular political songs ever produced in Ghana. “His hit-making songs will remain lasting contributions to my presidential journey and will forever be etched in the annals of the political campaign of the New Patriotic Party,” Nana Addo posted on Facebook, referring to the “Nana Y3 Winner” song.

A Legend At African Legends Night

Daddy Lumba’s contributions to African music earned him a revered status, making the African Legends Night celebrations significant milestones in honouring his legacy during his lifetime, a rarity for artistes in any industry. African Legends Night, an event organized by Global Media Alliance to honour iconic African musicians, chose Daddy Lumba as a focal point, recognising his profound impact on Ghanaian and African music.

The decision to celebrate him twice in a decade underscores his unmatched influence and the rarity of an artist maintaining such relevance over time. Celebrating Daddy Lumba while he was still active is a departure from the posthumous recognition many African artistes receive. The two separate concerts highlighted a growing awareness in African entertainment to honour icons in real-time, allowing them to witness their impact.

Legacy Lyrics

Much has been said about Daddy Lumba’s romantic themes, and rightly so. His songs chronicled love in all its forms: its sweetness, its heartbreak, its temptation, its endurance. But to reduce him to a love singer is to miss his spiritual, philosophical, and social dimensions. In Makra Mo, he sings with clarity, “Death belongs to the Creator. We humans have no power.” This was not just a resignation, but a worldview.

Daddy Lumba’s works took on a more introspective tone, often reflecting on mortality, family, faith, and legacy. He began to name persons in his lyrics, almost as if giving them an eternal space in his musical afterlife. He mourned friends who passed before him: “Kwame wuo nti, ebia na moanhu no biom da…” (“Because of Kwame’s death, maybe you’ll never see him again…”). Now, fans echo those same words for Lumba himself.

In Makra Mo, he leaves us with a charge, “Don’t cry for me. Don’t cry for yourselves or your children. Let my suffering not be in vain. Do not change after I’m gone.” It is both a request and a command, a call to celebrate his life rather than drown in sorrow.

A National Farewell

Radio and TV stations across the country are playing Lumba’s music on a loop. Fans have gathered outside his home, holding vigils and singing his songs late into the night.

And indeed, what he left us is immeasurable, a legacy of sound, soul, and sincerity. Ghana has lost a son, Africa has lost a legend, and the world has lost a voice that could melt even the hardest of hearts.

But the music remains. The memories remain. The melodies will echo in our trotros, our weddings, our celebrations, our heartbreaks, forever.

The government has launched the first phase of its Big Push infrastructure programme, with contractors expected to begin work on selected road projects within the next three weeks.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Roads and Highways, Mr Kwame Governs Agbodza, during a media briefing dubbed the Government Accountability Series held in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.

Mr Agbodza said the Ministry of Finance has given financial clearance for the projects to commence, following six months of technical assessments, engineering reviews, and cost evaluations.

“This is not a political declaration. These are properly prepared, budgeted and authorised projects. Contractors will move to site within three weeks,” he told journalists.

According to the Minister, the following road projects are among those scheduled to start under the first phase of the Big Push programme:

The construction of a new bridge over the Oti River at Dambai

The rehabilitation of the Wa–Han and Wa-Bolgatanga roads

The upgrading of the Tumu–Amile and Tumu–Han roads

The reconstruction of the Navrongo–Tumu road

The construction of the Kumasi Outer Ring Road (East Quadrant)

The construction of the Tamale Outer Ring Road

The construction of the Sunyani Outer Ring Road

The upgrading of the Techiman–Nkonsa–Wenchi road

The rehabilitation of the Wenchi–Solar road

Works on the Adomi Bridge, Aflao corridor through Atimpoku, Asikuma Junction, and Ho

Mr Agbodza explained that the Big Push is not targeted at specific constituencies but is a national infrastructure drive aimed at improving economic access, reducing transport costs, and supporting the proposed 24-hour economy.

“We’re not just building roads, we’re connecting economies. A farmer in Wa must be able to send produce to Accra or Takoradi without delay or loss. That’s what this is about,” he said.

He clarified that the full list of projects spans all 16 regions and urged the public not to judge the programme solely by the roads named so far.

“Just because your road isn’t named doesn’t mean it’s excluded. These are only the first batch. Many others are in the pipeline,” he added.

The Big Push is being implemented under a new model that does not allow unsolicited contractor proposals or the previously used design-and-build approach, which the Ministry says contributed to inflated costs and weak project supervision.

“In this administration, road project costs will be generated by our own agencies. We won’t accept contractor-driven estimates anymore,” Mr Agbodza said.

He also disclosed that more than GH¢4 billion has been approved for release to clear arrears and restart stalled works across the country.

The Ministry of Roads and Highways is expected to provide weekly updates and will publish detailed project data to allow the public to track progress.

Kwabena Kokofu is a former MP for Bantema Kwabena Kokofu is a former MP for Bantema

Former MP for Bantema, Henry Kwabena Kokofu, has explained how the Highlife group, Lumba Brothers, was formed.

In a discussion on UTV, shared on TikTok on July 29, 2025, Kwabena Kokofu recounted his first encounter with the late Daddy Lumba and Nana Acheampong about 40 years ago.

According to the politician, the group included seven individuals, and Lumba’s first wife, Serwaa Akoto, who sponsored their first album titled “Yee Ye Aka Akwantum” in 1989.

“Our first encounter with Daddy Lumba and Nana Acheampong was in Germany in the year 1985… The group involved seven guys, including me, my wife, and Lumba’s first wife, Serwaa Akoto,” he said.

Kwabena Kokofu further disclosed how they were able to record the “Yee Ye Aka Akwantum” album.

“We were there one day when Lumba called us to come play a beat for him with a fork and knife. Also, Nana Acheampong had a white girlfriend, and through that, we got in touch with some white people who were beat producers. That was how we brought Yee Ye Aka Akwantum,” he stated

The politician further shared pride in his contribution to the career growth of the late Lumba and Nana Acheampong.

“This is a very great lesson, and I am happy that I was able to support them to where they got to… I remember the time they asked me to be their manager. I didn’t know anything about music, so I told them I wanted to come to Ghana and continue my education. But we were in touch ever since,” he added.

The late Daddy Lumba, known for his classic hits such as Aben Wo Ha, Sika Asem, Theresa, Anidaso, and Ohia Asomdwe, died on Saturday, July 26, 2025, after battling a brief illness.

Individuals believed to be operatives of the National Security have reportedly arrested a journalist of the Multimedia Group who was reporting from the site where a warehouse owned by Ghanaian business mogul, Dr Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan, was demolished.

According to a news report by JoyNews, the armed security officers stormed the area when the said journalist, Carlos Calony, got to the demolition site.

The report indicated that the reporter was taken to National Security’s Blue Gate in Accra, and nothing has been heard from him yet.

The report captured the commotion when the security officials got to the site, in which the officials could be heard arguing with the reporter about whether he could report from the site.

Moments after the journalist started interviewing a civilian believed to be an eyewitness, one of the security officials, who was in military uniform, started whipping the witness.

More of the security officials, who were all in military uniforms, then pounced on the civilian and started hitting him.

The officials then ordered the journalist and his videographer to stop filming the incident, but the journalist could be heard insisting that they could not be stopped from doing their work.

The journalist is also heard asking the supposed security operatives to take him to their boss.

The cameraman, who narrated the incident in the news report, indicated that the reporter was picked up by the security officials for allegedly filming the incident with his phone.

“They have taken Carlos because they said they suspect he filmed them when they came. So, they seized his phone and took him to National Security,” he said.

Demolition begins at Tema Canoe Basin to pave way for modern fish processing hub

The month-long operation began this week The month-long operation began this week

A major demolition exercise is underway at the Canoe Basin within the Tema Fishing Harbour as part of efforts to decongest the area, remove unauthorized structures, and address growing concerns over sanitation and criminal activity.

The month-long operation, which began this week, is a joint effort by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), the Tema Traditional Council, the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana Navy.

Authorities say the exercise is part of a broader redevelopment initiative aimed at transforming the enclave into a state-of-the-art fish processing and preservation facility that complies with European Union (EU) food safety standards.

According to officials, the cleanup is intended to restore order to the area, which has long suffered from congestion, poor sanitation, and the presence of suspected criminals and drug users. However, not everyone supports the move.

Some fishmongers and women working in the area have voiced their frustration, claiming they were not given prior notice.

Speaking to Accra 100.5 FM’s Rebecca Lartey, they warned that the demolition threatens their livelihoods and could leave them without a place to do business.

Responding to the growing concerns and rumors that the land had been sold to private developers, the Chief Fisherman of Tema, Nii Odametey, strongly denied such claims.

He assured the community that the redevelopment project is designed to benefit local fish workers and improve long-term economic prospects for the fishing industry.

“The land has not been sold,” he stated.

“This project is to ensure that our fishmongers have access to a clean, safe, and modern environment that meets international standards. It is in the best interest of the community and the nation,” he added.

The demolition and redevelopment are expected to continue throughout August, with additional community engagement planned to address concerns and ensure a smooth transition for those affected.

12 firms bid to operate new Electronic Road Toll System – Agbodza

0

Twelve (12) companies have submitted bids to operate Ghana’s reintroduced electronic road toll system, according to the Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, the minister revealed that the Ministry has launched a concessionaire pre-qualification process as part of plans to modernise toll collection in the country.

“A public advertisement was issued, and a pre-qualification conference was held on July 3, 2025. So far, 12 firms have submitted applications, which are currently under evaluation,” Mr. Agbodza said.

He added that the Ministry has also submitted proposed new toll rates to Parliament through the Ministry of Finance for approval.

“All tolling will be done electronically. There will be no physical barriers on any road. The tolls will apply only to engineered roads,” he noted.

The reintroduction of road and bridge tolls comes after Cabinet approval, with the goal of improving road maintenance funding. According to Mr. Agbodza, the new system will prioritise transparency, revenue auditability, user convenience, and reduced congestion at toll points.

The shift to automated tolling is part of a broader infrastructure reform agenda, aimed at ensuring sustainable financing for Ghana’s road network.

Youth March Against Insecurity, Demands Action

0

The demonstrators

A group of Ghanaian youth on Saturday staged a protest in Accra, marching from Circle to East Legon to prompt authorities on the increasing number of atrocities in the country.

The demonstrators were demanding the immediate departure of Nigerian nationals from the country, citing an alleged rise in prostitution, kidnapping, and other crimes they associate with the increasing Nigerian presence.

The protesters also expressed frustration over the dominance of Nigerian traders on Ghanaian markets, accusing them of undercutting prices and making it difficult for local traders to compete.

Some of the protesters say they plan to march to the residence of a self-proclaimed Igbo king in Ghana as part of their demonstration. The protesters were seen holding placards which read: “Armed Robbery and Violent Attacks Must Stop”, and “Send them back”, among others.

In the wake of the protests and agitation from the Ghanaian youth, Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, on the floor of Parliament, called on Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin to invite the Interior Minister for questioning over the heightened killings in the country.

“Mr. Speaker, I say this with a lot of a heavy heart. We have been reading news about people going missing, and the next day or two, their bodies are found. We read about a number of them. I can cite them, but it says national security matters, and I need to be cautious about how I relate to this matter,” he stated.

Annoh-Dompreh called on the Speaker to invite the Ministers for the Interior and National Security to meet Members of Parliament at a plenary.

You should meet us in closed seating. Even yesterday, we had two killings again in the Ashanti Region. Even today, it happened again. Then we can have a closed seating for him to brief us. We may also have some good suggestions. We are representing various constituencies, and Members of Parliament may be carrying unique and diverse information, which could be made available to aid the work and operation of the minister. So I think this is a matter we need to act as people’s representatives, we can’t cross over. And I pray that you invite the Interior Minister to meet with colleagues today.”

Days of uncontrolled, unregulated award of contracts over – Agbodza

0

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has warned contractors and stakeholders in the road construction sector, declaring an end to the era of indiscriminate awarding of contracts without proper oversight or funding.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday July 30, he described the previous system as chaotic, revealing that since taking office, he has been inundated with unsolicited contract proposals lacking transparency and budgetary backing.

“There was almost uncontrolled level of award of contract. As a minister, every day people come to me with packages and they are throwing them in front of me to just approve,” Agbodza lamented. “Reset means that that cannot be done.”

He emphasised that the Mahama administration was focused on a complete reset of the contract approval process, anchored on discipline, planning, and financial accountability. Going forward, only projects that are fully programmed and supported by the national budget will be considered.

“We will only go ahead with projects that have been programmed and budgeted for,” the Minister said firmly. “I am pleading with everybody interested in playing a role in the road sector that the days of uncontrolled, unregulated award of contracts is far gone. We will only start projects that we are sure we can fund.”

BoG Second Deputy Governor urges banks to embrace sustainable Banking principles

0

Accra, July 30, GNA – The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has called on banks to align their operations with the sustainable banking principles as it steps up efforts to integrate climate risk and environmental sustainability into the country’s financial sector.

The BoG has also issued a Climate-Related Financial Risk Directive, requiring all banks to integrate climate risk into governance and risk management structures.

The directive seeks to enhance the resilience of Regulated Financial Institutions (RFIs) by integrating climate risk considerations into governance, risk management, and disclosure practices.

Banks are required to update their governance structures, risk management systems, and internal policies to comply with the directive by 31st December 2025, with full implementation starting on 1stJanuary 2026.

A newly established Climate and Sustainability Office within the central bank will lead the implementation.

Speaking at a session on the construction sector, Second Deputy Governor of the BoG, Mrs. Matilda Asante-Asiedu, said the move was part of broader efforts to safeguard the banking sector from emerging Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) financial risks through the implementation of the Ghana Sustainable Banking Principles.

She said the construction industry like other sectors was deeply linked with climate, resource efficiency and financial risk, adding that rising temperatures and erratic rainfall patterns could push timelines and costs beyond projections thereby posing risks to banks.

“These are increasingly part of the risk landscape and can amplify loss given defaults for a bank, create reputational issues, or possibly lead to regulatory penalties,” she said.

“Our goal is to ensure that banks do not simply react to these risks after they occur, but proactively incorporate sustainability considerations into project due diligence, client engagement and portfolio monitoring,” she added.

Mrs Asante-Asiedu said BoG sustained engagement was helping financial institutions to adopt practices that integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors, particularly in high-impact sectors such as construction.

She said this had led to an increase in sector-wide compliance with the principles from 42.2% in 2021 to over 73.6% as of March 2025.

She urged the banking sector to be at the forefront of the ESG evolution, adding that the Bank of Ghana viewed sustainability not as a peripheral issue, but as a central pillar of financial stability, long-term value creation and responsible economic stewardship.

For his part, Mr John Awuah, CEO of Ghana Association of Banks, said despite the construction sector significant contributions to growth, it presented considerable environmental and social risks that, if left unchecked, could undermine the very development gains the country seek to consolidate.

He said the Ghana Sustainable Banking Principles, were not just a compliance tool but a strategic framework to reorient financial intermediation practices in ways that respect environmental boundaries, protect vulnerable communities and future-proof our banking institutions against climate and ESG-related risks.

“As banks, we cannot finance the future with tools from the past. ESG must become the new language of risk, the new language of opportunity and the new logic of value creation,” Mr Awuah said.

He called on development partners to help mitigate the perceived and actual risks associated with sustainable construction lending through a guarantee scheme tailored to ESG-aligned projects to incentivise banks to lend more assertively in this space.

In addition, the provision of affordable and long-term financing to banks, which can then be on lend to developers for credible sustainability plans.

This approach can significantly reduce the price burden on borrowers and improve project viability.

He called for support for the co-development of sector-specific ESG screening tools, environmental risk calculators, and construction-specific sustainability benchmarks to aid diligence and monitoring as well as capacity building and technical assistance.

Xandy Kamel tearfully calls out TV station for pirating her movie two days after release

Xandy Kamel is a Ghanaian filmmaker Xandy Kamel is a Ghanaian filmmaker

Ghanaian filmmaker and actress Xandy Kamel has accused Fast TV of airing her newly released movie, “Unseen Beauty,” without her permission.

In a video shared on her Instagram page, teary Xandy expressed anger and deep sadness at the Ghanaian TV station.

According to her, the film was released just two days prior to this development, and she has not made even $10 from it.

“Why are some Ghanaians like this? You’ve managed to raise money to open a TV station, yet you’re saying you don’t have funds to buy content for it? I released a movie just two days ago and haven’t even made $10 from it, but Fast TV is pirating my film without my permission.

“I’m struggling to find anyone to help promote it. I’ve shared it with some bloggers to assist in promoting the movie, but none have taken the opportunity to help,” she stated in the video.

Xandy went on to reference a recent complaint made by Nigerian actress Mercy Johnson, who also accused a Ghanaian TV station, Blazing TV, of pirating her film.

She explained that she had supported Mercy Johnson’s post at the time but was met with skepticism, as some people claimed it was a publicity stunt.

“Last week, when Mercy Johnson voiced her complaints about her movie being pirated in Ghana, I commented on her post. Some people claimed it was just for promotion. Would you say my situation is also a promotional tactic?” she questioned.

The filmmaker ended her video by calling on the National Film Authority (NFA) and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts to take action and protect filmmakers from piracy in Ghana.

“I appeal to the National Film Authority and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts: please come to my aid,” she added.

Xandy Kamel now joins a list of filmmakers who have spoken out about the illegal broadcast of their movies on Ghanaian television stations.

Other affected filmmakers include Omoni Oboli, Ruth Kadiri, and Mercy Johnson.

Meanwhile, scores of stakeholders in the film industry have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of copyright laws and better protection of creative works.

Ghanaians have seeked specialised healthcare through Nexus GSL in Turkiye Ghanaians have seeked specialised healthcare through Nexus GSL in Turkiye

Access to specialised medical care abroad is becoming a growing option for Ghanaians, particularly as the cost and availability of certain treatments at home remain a concern.

Nexus Global Services Ltd. (Nexus GSL), a company operating between Ghana and Türkiye, is providing medical travel support for individuals seeking care in Turkish hospitals.

From cancer treatment to orthopaedic surgery, the company connects patients with

internationally accredited facilities in Türkiye, such as Medicana, Acıbadem, Medipol, and Memorial Hospitals.

The service includes travel arrangements, hospital bookings, language assistance, and post-treatment follow-ups in Ghana.

With increasing interest in medical travel, Nexus GSL says its aim is to reduce the barriers many Ghanaians face in accessing quality healthcare.

“We want to make world-class healthcare more accessible,” the team said, noting that they provide logistical support so patients can concentrate on treatment and recovery.

The procedures commonly arranged through Nexus GSL include cancer care, organ and kidney transplants, weight loss and bariatric surgery, orthopaedic and spinal procedures, and reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.

In addition to the treatments themselves, Nexus GSL offers consultations with Turkish doctors, helps patients handle visa and travel documentation, and provides airport transport and accommodation in Türkiye.

English-speaking medical interpreters assist patients at hospitals, and air ambulance services are available when needed. Upon return to Ghana, recovery support is also provided to ensure continuity of care.

Health tourism is not new, but more Ghanaians are now looking beyond local options as awareness and support for medical travel grow. Nexus GSL reports having assisted patients with a range of conditions — one recent case involved a patient who regained mobility after 18 years following orthopedic surgery in Türkiye.

The company has an office in Accra where prospective patients can seek information or consultations before committing to care abroad.

William Ato Essien granted GH¢10 million bail

William Ato Essien is the former CEO of now-defunct Capital Bank William Ato Essien is the former CEO of now-defunct Capital Bank

Former Chief Executive Officer of now-defunct Capital Bank, William Ato Essien, has been granted GH¢10 million bail with two sureties by the Court of Appeal.

Essien was sentenced to 15 years in prison by an Accra High Court following charges of stealing over GH¢90 million of liquidity support provided by the Bank of Ghana to Capital Bank.

He was initially given the opportunity to avoid a custodial sentence by agreeing to pay back the GH¢90 million as restitution to the state but he failed to meet the payment terms agreed upon with the Attorney General and the court.

Essien paid GH¢30 million upfront in December 2022 but was unable to pay the remaining GH¢60 million in the agreed installments.

At the time of sentencing, Justice Kyei Baffour noted that Essien had managed to pay only GH¢7 million of the outstanding GH¢40 million due under the agreement.

As a result, he was sentenced to 15 years of hard labour.

Following his conviction, Essien filed an appeal against the sentence. On Friday, May 16, 2025, his legal team, led by Baffour Gyawu Bonsu Ashia (standing in for Thaddeus Sory), applied for bail pending the determination of the appeal.

But the petition submitted by Andrew Appiah-Danquah, a lawyer, and dated Thursday February 27, 2025 addressed raised serious concerns about the fairness and integrity of Essien’s conviction and imprisonment.

The petition highlighted Essien’s significant contributions to Ghana’s financial sector as being the founder of Capital Bank, his leadership and innovation provided thousands of jobs, supported local businesses, and empowered Ghanaian entrepreneurs.

The petition argued that his conviction undermined the achievements of a visionary entrepreneur who proved that local enterprises could thrive in a competitive financial sector.

Essien, who served as the Managing Director of Capital Bank, was convicted in October 2023 after failing to fulfill the terms of a plea bargain agreement brokered by the then-Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame.

Sports minister calls for sustained investment in women’s football

0

Kofi Adams is Ghana's sports minister Kofi Adams is Ghana’s sports minister

Minister of Sports, Kofi Adams, has issued a passionate call for sustained investment in women’s football, following the Black Queens’ bronze-medal triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

He noted that women’s football in Ghana has existed in the shadows for far too long.

The team’s 4-3 penalty shootout victory over South Africa in the third-place playoff, secured for the team a $350,000 prize.

This development has reignited national pride and solidified the team’s place as one that has huge potential to elevate Ghana’s women football on the global stage.

The Black Queens’ journey at WAFCON 2024 was a rollercoaster of resilience, marked by a 2-0 loss to South Africa, a 1-1 draw with Mali, and a commanding 4-1 win over Tanzania in the group stage.

The 4-2 penalty shootout win over Algeria in the quarter-finals propelled them to their first semi-final since 2016, where they fell 4-2 on penalties to host team, Morocco.

The bronze-medal match showcased their grit, with local stars like Comfort Yeboah, Nancy Amoh, and Kerrie McCarthy, alongside veterans like Evelyn Badu, delivering under pressure.

This achievement by Ghana’s women team at WAFCON has sparked a renewed push for structural support for women’s football.

Speaking at the Parliament House in Accra on July 29, 2025, Adams hailed the team’s performance as a wake-up call for stakeholders.

“The Black Queens have not only proven their worth as athletes but as ambassadors of Ghanaian potential. This is not about football but a powerful message that when we invest in our women and give them the platform, results will follow,” he said.

Adams emphasised that the Ministry of Sports and Recreation is committed to enhancing the welfare, training conditions and development pathways for all national teams, including the Black Queens.

He added that the Queens performance at Morocco is a springboard for renewed investment in women’s sports infrastructure and capacity building.

Despite recent progress, including increased media coverage and sponsorship from Malta Guinness, women’s football in Ghana has struggled with inadequate training facilities, limited youth programs, and inconsistent funding.

The team’s preparation for WAFCON was hampered by delayed allowances, a recurring issue that Adams vowed to address.

With the $350,000 prize set to be reinvested into player bonuses and development programs, sports minister sees WAFCON 2024 as a turning point.

The minister’s vision is clear- sustained investment in women’s football could see the Black Queens not just in the shadows, but basking in the spotlight of continental and global glory.

Ex-MIIF CEO Edward Koranteng stopped from flying abroad

0

Edward Koranteng, former Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), was reportedly prevented from boarding an international flight at the Kotoka International Airport on the night of Tuesday, July 29, 2025.

Mr. Koranteng, who is currently under investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), was intercepted by immigration officials after it was discovered that he attempted to leave the country without prior clearance from the OSP.

Sources confirm that the former MIIF boss had been placed on a travel watch list—commonly known as a stop list—due to the ongoing investigation.

His attempt to travel without the required express permission triggered an alert at the airport.

The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) promptly informed the OSP, which has since taken custody of Mr. Koranteng for further action.

Details of the investigation against him have not yet been made public, but his placement on enquiry bail suggests that the case involves significant allegations under the OSP’s mandate to investigate corruption and related offenses.

In February 2025, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) declared former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta a wanted person as part of a broader probe into alleged financial misconduct.

He was declared wanted alongside Edward Nana Yaw Koranteng, former CEO of the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), and Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), over suspected acts of corruption.

Ato Essien granted GHS10m bail pending appeal

0

The Court of Appeal has granted bail pending appeal to William Ato Essein, the founder of the defunct Capital Bank.

In a ruling on Wednesday July 30, the court granted bail to Ato Essien in the sum of GHS10million with two sureties.

He is to deposit his passport at the court’s registry and also report once a month to the Registrar of the Court.

Essien was jailed for 15 years in 2023 by the Accra High Court for stealing over GHS90 million belonging to the bank.

This is after he failed to refund the total of GHS90 million under a restitution deal which had earlier secured him a non custodial sentence.

Prior to the bail, calls had emerged from some quarters for the release of Ato Essien on grounds of ill health.

“I wish to commend the African Union Executive Council for approving the terms of reference for the African Union Commission of Experts on Reparations and the African Union Reference Group of Legal Experts on Reparations. These are decisive milestones,” the President said.

The president emphasised that the approval represents just the beginning, calling for immediate action to transform the bodies from paper institutions into active agents of change.

He said, the continent “must now move swiftly to operationalize these instruments” and empower the bodies with “the resources, visibility and mandate to lead us on this noble journey of truth, justice and restitution.”

He warned delegates that the new reparations bodies must not become “another declaration left on paper” but rather function as “a living mandate for action.”

He positioned the new institutions as essential tools for addressing what he called the “enduring legacies of slavery, colonial exploitation, systemic racism and economic subjugation” that continue to shape African states.

He stated that these historical injustices remain visible today in “arbitrary borders that divide our peoples,” “financial hardships imposed by unjust global systems,” and “fragile governance systems” that African nations are still struggling to strengthen.

The president argued that the reparations bodies will play a central role in restoring “African agency, sovereignty and dignity” and building governance systems “informed by our context, shaped by our people and owned by our African communities.”

According to the president, the establishment of these bodies comes at a defining moment when Africa’s citizens – particularly young people – are growing increasingly impatient with ceremonial gestures over concrete action.

He stated that Africa’s youth majority is “not asking for charity” but demanding “fairness” and “opportunity,” making the operationalization of reparations institutions more urgent than ever.

He declared that the new bodies must rise to meet these expectations, telling delegates that “our citizens are watching and waiting” for results rather than rhetoric.

The president said the institutions will work within the broader context of the AU’s declared “Decade of Reparations” spanning 2026-2036, representing a sustained continental commitment to addressing historical injustices.

The High-Level Dialogue continues through the week as African leaders work to define the specific mandates and operational frameworks for the newly approved reparations bodies.

Stanbic Calls For Structural Reforms To Sustain Forex Gains

Musah Abdallah

The Head of Corporate and Investment Banking at Stanbic Bank, Musah Abdallah, has called for a shift from short-term monetary interventions to deeper structural and fiscal reforms to sustain the country’s recent gains in foreign exchange (forex).

Speaking at the Graphic Business/Stanbic Bank Breakfast Meeting, he emphasised the importance of a more strategic and coordinated approach to economic management.

The breakfast meeting, held under the theme, “Sustaining Forex Gains: Business and Economic Impact,” brought together policymakers, economists, industry leaders and financial experts to discuss how Ghana can convert recent foreign exchange stability into long-term economic growth.

Delivering his introductory remarks, Mr. Abdallah said, “Sustaining our forex gains will require more than short-term fixes. It would demand deep structural reforms, ongoing fiscal discipline, complementary and progressive monetary policy, and continuous support for the productive sectors of our economy.”

He further stressed the importance of translating macroeconomic stability into practical benefits for businesses and individuals.

“Today’s theme is so timely and there are some questions we need to answer, like; how do we protect and extend the progress made? How do we channel forex gains into real, tangible development outcomes? How do we ensure that businesses thrive in the new environment?” he asked.

He explained that Stanbic Bank views its role as more than a financial intermediary, positioning itself instead as a partner in national development.

“At Stanbic Bank, these questions are core to our mission. We are committed to being more than just a financial services provider. We aspire to partner in nation-building, helping to navigate the complexities of the macroeconomic environment, whilst equipping businesses and individuals to make informed, future-ready decisions,” he stated.

He further called for broader stakeholder engagement and public involvement in shaping forex-related policies. “We believe that the forex discussions should not be confined to boardrooms or trading floors. We must stimulate national conversations around how these gains affect the real economy,” he said.

‘Afenyo-Markin is now our campaign manager, everything he does favours the NDC’

Asiedu Nketiah (R) says the NPP got it wrong by making Afenyo-Markin (L) its leader in Parliament Asiedu Nketiah (R) says the NPP got it wrong by making Afenyo-Markin (L) its leader in Parliament

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has taken a swipe at the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, over his actions in Parliament.

According to him, all the actions of the Minority Leader, who is also the Member of Parliament for Effutu, have been making the NDC look good in the eyes of the public.

He said that Afenyo-Markin has effectively made himself the campaign manager of the NDC for the upcoming 2028 election through his actions.

“Now, Afenyo-Markin has become the campaign manager of the NDC. So, we are praying that nobody will change him. He should be there (as Minority Leader) till the next election because he will help us win.

“All his actions are helping the course of the NDC while sinking the NPP. And so, we see him as our campaign manager. We are praying that they will keep him in his position,” he said in the Twi dialect in a recent interview shared on X on July 29, 2025.

Asiedu Nketiah asserted that the NPP made a huge mistake when it replaced Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu with Afenyo-Markin as its leader in Parliament in the run-up to the 2024 election.

He said that the NPP changed their leaders in the House because of a similar move by the NDC, but unlike the changes made by his side, the opposition NPP’s decision was detrimental.

“If you want to copy something, the conditions must be identical, so that after copying, you will get similar results. If your conditions are different, you must consult before copying; otherwise, you may achieve different results.

“For instance, Osei Kyei-Mensah, the former NPP Majority Leader, has come out to say that he was removed because we reshuffled our leaders. We changed our leaders because we identified some challenges; they copied it, and their change was for the worse,” he said.

Ghana’s trade surplus hits 307% to $5.57 billion in first half of 2025 – BoG report

Cocoa and gold are key export commodities for Ghana Cocoa and gold are key export commodities for Ghana

Ghana posted a significant trade surplus of US$5.57 billion in the first six months of 2025, which represents a 307.4% increase compared to the US$1.367 billion recorded during the same period in 2024.

The trade surplus is the amount by which the value of a country’s exports exceeds the value of its imports.

According to the Bank of Ghana’s latest data, total exports for the first half of the year reached US$13.79 billion, while imports stood at US$8.225 billion as of June 2025.

The strong surplus was largely driven by booming gold exports, which brought in US$8.38 billion, supported by high global gold prices. Cocoa exports followed, generating US$2.167 billion during the period.

Additionally, crude oil exports were also notable, bringing in US$1.364 billion, while non-traditional exports, including processed foods, horticultural products, and crafts accounted for US$1.87 billion.

According to the BoG data, the country’s gross international reserves stood at US$11.12 billion as of June 2025, providing about 4.8 months of import cover, while net international reserves stood at US$8.88 billion.

On the external accounts front, Ghana recorded a current account surplus of US$3.34 billion. The financial account was however estimated at US$1.596 billion, reflecting improved capital flows and external financing conditions.

Daddy Lumba has never been to a night club before, he doesn’t attend parties – Roman Fada

Roman Fada is the manager of the late Daddy Lumba Roman Fada is the manager of the late Daddy Lumba

Manager of the late Daddy Lumba, Kwabena Agyeman Appiah Kubi, popularly known as Roman Fada has disclosed that Daddy Lumba has never been to a night club before and doesn’t attend parties.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM on July 29, 2025, Roman Fada mentioned that Daddy Lumba was a shy person, and he showed up at events simply because of the nature of his job.

“He was a shy person, if not for the nature of his job that took me stage to perform for the people, he doesn’t talk much. You will not even meet him anywhere unless it’s an important event.

“He has never been to a night club before, he doesn’t attend parties if not that he was really invited. He’s always indoors unless important events and that has been his life throughout,” he said.

According to Roman Fada, Daddy Lumba’s welcoming personality made him a beloved figure.

“He was a free-spirited person and when you get close to him, he would keep advising you. He once told me to always speak the truth even if it hurts,” he stated.

He added, “He cracked jokes a lot and liked teasing people. Everyone who came across him knows he was jovial. When we go somewhere and someone try to outdo him by showing off his English skills, he would then tell me that the person is funny to think he could speak English than him and doesn’t know he could speak most languages, including Dutch.”

Court grants William Ato Essien bail

Ato Essien is the founder of the defunct Capital Bank Ato Essien is the founder of the defunct Capital Bank

The Court of Appeal has reportedly granted bail to the founder of the defunct Capital Bank, William Ato Essien.

According to a report by TV3, Ato Essien was granted bail in the sum of GH¢10 million with two sureties.

He has also been ordered to deposit his passport at the court’s registry.

Ato Essien was convicted in December 2022 for allegedly embezzling over GH¢90 million from Capital Bank, funds acquired through Bank of Ghana liquidity support.

Although initially spared a custodial sentence via a restitution agreement, he was later jailed in late 2023 after failing to fulfil the payment terms.

The state, under the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government, entered an agreement under Section 35 of the Courts Act, 1993 (Act 459), with Ato Essien and settled on him paying GH¢90 million to avoid being jailed.

He paid GH¢30 million in cash before the settlement was adopted by the court, with the rest to be paid over a period of one year.

He, however, defaulted after paying GH¢9 million in addition to the GH¢30 million and was jailed for 15 years after the then Attorney General applied to the court for him to be sentenced.

The granting of his bail comes following calls for him to be set free over his current health condition.

A faction of the public has said that he should be freed because he has paid substantial sums toward restitution. Some have also challenged the legality of his conviction, citing concerns that he lacked the financial means for an elite legal defence and may have been treated unfairly.

Following his conviction, Essien filed an appeal against the sentence. On Friday, May 16, 2025, his legal team, led by Baffour Gyawu Bonsu Ashia (standing in for Thaddeus Sory), applied for bail pending the determination of the appeal.

The petition submitted by Andrew Appiah-Danquah, a lawyer, and dated Thursday, February 27, 2025 addressed raised serious concerns about the fairness and integrity of Essien’s conviction and imprisonment.

The petition highlighted Essien’s significant contributions to Ghana’s financial sector as being the founder of Capital Bank; his leadership and innovation provided thousands of jobs, supported local businesses, and empowered Ghanaian entrepreneurs.

The petition argued that his conviction undermined the achievements of a visionary entrepreneur who proved that local enterprises could thrive in a competitive financial sector.

‘Black Queens must earn same as Black Stars’ – Manhyia South MP

Ghana's Black clinched a bronze medal at the 2025 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Ghana’s Black clinched a bronze medal at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON)

Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has called on the sport sector to ensure that bonuses paid to the Black Queens is congruent to that of the Black Stars following their stellar performance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Black Queens, who won the bronze title, made a remarkable comeback from a slow start to secure third place, defeating Algeria in the quarterfinals and then stunning defending champions South Africa in the third-place playoff.

In a passionate address to Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, called for fair bonuses for the Black Queens, emphasising the need for equal pay for both the male and female teams.

“Mr Speaker, we must ensure that our illustrious Black Queens receive equal pay, comparable to what the Black Stars earn. It’s time we uphold the Affirmative Action Act, which was passed by this very House.

“Fortunately, the sports minister is one of us, and we expect him to champion what is fair and just.

“The current disparity where the Black Stars receive significantly more than the Black Queens—is not only unjust but goes against the very principles of the Affirmative Action Act,” he said.

Several countries, like the US, Norway, Australia, Brazil, Wales, England, and Ireland, have already implemented equal pay in football, setting a precedent for others to follow.

The Black Queens got a hero’s welcome at Kotoka International Airport in Accra after winning bronze at the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco.

Fans and officials greeted them with thunderous applause, chants, waving flags, and traditional drumming.

The players, who were clad in their Ghana jersey, proudly showed off their medals, with some of them looking visibly emotional about the warm reception.

We can’t find Akufo-Addo’s 10,000km roads

0

Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has cast serious doubt on the previous government’s touted infrastructure record, particularly its claim of constructing over 10,000 kilometers of roads during President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s tenure.

Addressing journalists at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, Mr. Agbodza said a nationwide inspection conducted shortly after he assumed office revealed a stark contrast between official claims and the reality on the ground.

“As soon as I assumed office, I went around the country to see the roads in Ghana. What I saw was that the over 10,000km of roads former President Akufo-Addo claimed he had constructed cannot be found,” he said.

“In fact, not even a 1,000 kilometres of good road was seen,” the Minister added.

Mr. Agbodza’s remarks come amid ongoing public debate over the actual scope and quality of road infrastructure developed under the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. His comments suggest the need for an independent audit of claimed achievements in the sector.

JOYNEWS condemns assault and detention of reporter Carlos Calony by operatives in military uniform

0

JOYNEWS strongly condemns the violent assault and arbitrary detention of our journalist, Carlos Calony, on the Spintex Road in Accra while covering a demolition exercise on Tuesday, 30th July, 2025.

The reporter and his cameraman, Jonathan Mensah Quaye, were reporting live from the scene when operatives, believed to be from National Security and dressed in military uniforms, attacked them without provocation.

Carlos was interviewing an eyewitness when officers pounced on the civilian, beating and slapping him for speaking to the media. Carlos was himself struck twice in the neck with a clenched fist by one of the officers.

In a shocking escalation, the operatives pushed over the mounted camera, causing significant damage, seized Carlos’ phones, and forced him into a vehicle.

He was driven to the National Security installation at Bluegate, where he was detained. His release came only after the personal intervention of the Minister for the Interior.

Carlos’ personal microphone was also damaged in the assault, and he is currently receiving medical treatment for neck pain.

The entire episode was broadcast live, and viewers across the country witnessed this brazen attack on press freedom in real time.

JOYNEWS condemns this act in the strongest terms. This is not only an attack on two of our journalists but also a blatant affront to media freedom, the right to information, and the constitutional guarantee of free expression in Ghana.

We demand:

An immediate and transparent investigation by state authorities;

Sanctions against the operatives involved.

Journalists must be allowed to work freely and safely. We will not relent in our duty to inform the Ghanaian people.

Asanko Gold Denies Allegations Of Military Intimidation

0

Asanko Gold Ghana Ltd. has strongly denied claims that it deployed military personnel to harass and intimidate residents of Tontokrom in the Amansie South District.

The allegations were made during a press conference held by some members of the Tontokrom community on Saturday, July 26, 2025. According to the residents, the presence of armed soldiers in the area had heightened tensions and created fear among locals.

However, in a press statement issued on Monday, July 28, the company dismissed the accusations as “inaccurate and misleading,” insisting that the military presence in the area was part of a nationwide security operation sanctioned by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and coordinated through the Ghana Chamber of Mines.

The statement, signed by Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Asanko Gold, Charles Amoah, clarified that the deployment was part of a government-backed initiative to protect legal mining concessions from the activities of illegal miners, commonly referred to as galamsey.

“Illegal mining not only threatens lives and the environment, but also reduces state revenue and undermines lawful operations. The military deployment is therefore not punitive or targeted, but a lawful measure aimed at safeguarding lives and property,” the statement read.

According to the company, extensive stakeholder engagements were held prior to the security deployment. The District Security Councils (DISEC) of Amansie West and Amansie South chaired discussions involving local leaders and community representatives. The initiative was explained as a collaborative effort to encourage peace and promote voluntary withdrawal from unauthorised mining areas.

Asanko Gold expressed optimism that, as in other areas where similar operations had been conducted, illegal miners in Tontokrom would voluntarily cooperate.

The company also reaffirmed its commitment to community engagement and development, emphasising that it remains open to dialogue with all stakeholders, including traditional authorities, youth groups, and civil society.

“Asanko Gold remains committed to nurturing a mutually respectful relationship with the people of Tontokrom. We urge the public to disregard the false claims and work with us to ensure responsible and sustainable mining,” the release concluded.

Meanwhile, tensions remain in parts of the Amansie South District, where disputes over mining rights and operations have occasionally sparked unrest. Local authorities have yet to issue a separate statement on the latest developments.
