The Reverend Father Dogli Memorial Technical Institute from the Oti Region has emerged as the overall winner of the Southern Sector STEM Plastic Waste Competition for Catholic Senior High Schools in Ghana.

Held in Accra on August 5, 2025, the competition brought together brilliant young minds to pitch creative solutions to Ghana’s growing plastic waste crisis.

Also in contention were St. Catherine Catholic Girls Senior High School, St. Michael Senior High School, St. Margaret Mary Senior High Technical School, and St. Gregory Senior High School.

St. Gregory Senior High School claimed second place in the highly competitive event.

Madam Berthy Buah, Regional STEM Coordinator at the Ghana Education Service, said STEM education is designed to empower students to be problem-solvers and environmental stewards.

She expressed optimism that such initiatives would inspire a deeper sense of responsibility among the youth.

“I am really impressed with these innovative minds; you can see that a lot of thinking has gone into this,” she said.

Organized by the Catholic Education Unit in collaboration with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) and other partners, the event provided a platform for students to develop sustainable innovations using plastic waste.

Students showcased a range of impressive products, including plastic greenhouses, raincoats, bricks, flower vases, umbrellas, bags, baskets, and decorative items, all made from repurposed plastic.

Dr. Joseph Agyapong Darmoe, Programmes Director at KAS, lauded the creativity on display, describing the innovations as “surprising.”

He emphasized the urgency of the plastic waste problem, pointing out that Ghana generates an estimated 840,000 metric tonnes of plastic waste annually, exceeding the country’s cocoa output.

“The rate at which plastic waste is polluting our oceans is frightening. This contest is a strong step toward encouraging the youth to find real, sustainable solutions,” Dr. Darmoe said.

Francis Batadjan, General Manager of Catholic Schools in Ghana, said the contest served as more than a competition; it was a “wake-up call” to rethink waste management practices.

He urged students to continue developing ideas that would benefit their communities and the nation at large.

Ghana declares mourning after ministers killed in…

0

Ghana has declared three days of national mourning after two government ministers were killed in a military helicopter crash on Wednesday.

The crash happened in a forested area in the south of the country. The helicopter was carrying three crew and five passengers. All eight people on board died.

Flags are flying at half-mast across Ghana.

Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed were among the dead. They were flying from Accra to the southern town of Obuasi when the crash happened, the presidency said.

“The president and government extend our condolences and sympathies to the families of our comrades and the servicemen who died in service to the country,” said President John Mahama’s chief of staff, Julius Debrah.

Mahama is said to be feeling “down emotionally”.

Messages of condolence have also come from the African Union and the West African bloc Ecowas.

The Ghanaian Armed Forces said an investigation is underway to find out what caused the crash.

Few details

Local television station Joy News showed mobile phone footage of burning wreckage in thick forest.

The military said earlier on Wednesday that an air force Z9 helicopter had gone missing from radar. It had taken off from Accra just after 9:00 am local time and was heading northwest to Obuasi.

Media reports said the flight was linked to an event on illegal gold mining, a major environmental problem in Ghana.

Muhammed, 50, was due to attend UN talks in Geneva this week on a global treaty to tackle plastic pollution.

He was serving as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.

Boamah had been appointed as Defence Minister in January, shortly after Mahama took office.

Sahel countries navigate uncertainty following split from Ecowas bloc

Environment challenges

Muhammed had been leading efforts to fight illegal gold mining. The practice has destroyed farmland and polluted rivers, and is threatening cocoa crops.

The issue featured heavily in last year’s election, which brought Mahama to power.

This year, the new government created the Ghana Gold Board and banned foreigners from the local gold trade. Both moves were seen as key parts of its crackdown.

The head of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), Inger Andersen, said Muhammed was a “committed environmentalist” and “deeply respected” across Africa and beyond.

She said he had recently been elected to the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) in Nairobi.

Regional tensions

The crash is a blow for Ghana’s security at a time of rising tension near its northern border.

Also among the dead were Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Ghana’s deputy national security coordinator and former agriculture minister, and Samuel Sarpong, a senior figure in Mahama’s National Democratic Congress party.

Boamah had been leading Ghana’s defence efforts at a time of growing violence in Burkina Faso.

Ghana has so far avoided jihadist attacks, unlike neighbours Togo and Benin. But some experts have warned of weapons smuggling and fighters crossing the border from Burkina Faso.

In May, Boamah travelled to Ouagadougou to boost ties with Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger – three military-led countries that recently quit Ecowas.

President Mahama has cancelled all official events for the rest of the week. The mourning period began on Thursday.

I Went To Visit My Boyfriend, Armed Robbers Came And They Forcefully Had S€x With Me – Lady

News Hub Creator1d

Popular Nollywood actress Elvina Ibru has revealed what happened to her when she visited her boyfriend in his house, while also stating why she would never visit a poor man in their house anymore.

According to the video that was posted on the official YouTube channel of With Chude TV on Saturday, August 2, 2025, during an interview, she stated that she went to her boyfriend’s to visit him but that she was forcefully molested by armed robbers that came to her boyfriend’s house.

According to Elvina Ibru, she said, “My boyfriend kept on pressurising me to come and spend the night with him in his house. I met him in Benin, he used to come to my house to spend time with me because he didn’t have his own house. He later moved to Lagos State because of me, and he came with some of his family members, but I still wasn’t comfortable because I can’t sleep over in his house because of his family. He eventually got his own place, but it’s very far, and it was very stressful for me to visit him because I was always busy with work. One day, he told me that I wasn’t treating him well because I’m a princess and that maybe his apartment wasn’t really good for me. I went to visit my boyfriend, armed robbers came, and they forcefully had sex with me. From that moment, I decided that I will never sleep over in a poor man’s house because he won’t be able to provide the security required to guarantee my safety.”

I’m Not A Criminal – Shatta Wale Slams EOCO

0

Shatta Wale

Dancehall artist Shatta Wale is fiercely pushing back against the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after armed officers stormed his home and seized his Lamborghini Urus, claiming the vehicle was linked to a convicted fraudster in the United States.

In a high-stakes international operation, EOCO confirmed in an August 5, 2025 press release that the 2019 Lamborghini was retrieved from Shatta Wale’s residence at Trassaco Valley Phase 1 in Accra, in collaboration with the FBI and the U.S. Justice Department.

The seizure is reportedly part of a wider crackdown on assets tied to Nana Kwabena Amuah, a convicted financial criminal serving an 86-month sentence in the U.S.

But Shatta Wale, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah, is adamant that he is an innocent party caught in the crossfire—and he’s not staying silent.

“I bought the Lamborghini for $150,000 and didn’t know it was from Adu-Boahene,” the artist said.

“I don’t know any Nana Kwabena Amuah. I am a third party to that Lamborghini. I repeat—I did not get any vehicle from him.”

Shatta Wale revealed that he and his legal team in the U.S. conducted due diligence on the vehicle through Carfax, an online platform for checking a car’s history. According to him, nothing flagged the vehicle as stolen or suspicious.

The artist expressed outrage at the way the seizure was conducted. According to him, heavily armed Surveillance and Asset Recovery Unit (SARU) officers arrived at his home unannounced, with one of them even cocking his weapon.

“Am I a criminal to be treated like this?” he asked, visibly shaken by the encounter. “I’m leaving the car for you people—don’t come to my house, and let nobody invite me.”

However, EOCO, in its statement, claimed the operation was civil and without incident, stating that Shatta Wale voluntarily surrendered the car after requesting the operation remain discreet to protect his brand. However, his account tells a story of intimidation and fear.

The agency defended the officers’ use of firearms, saying it is standard safety protocol for SARU operatives to be armed during operations.

EOCO also confirmed that Shatta Wale and a former senior officer of the National Signal Bureau (NSB) have been designated persons of interest and may be invited for further questioning in the ongoing investigation.

Meanwhile, the FBI and the U.S. Justice Department are preparing to file a Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) request with the Government of Ghana to repatriate the Lamborghini to the U.S., where it will be counted towards Amuah’s $4.7 million restitution.

EOCO has said it may share the final investigation findings with U.S. authorities as part of their ongoing cooperation.

Big Madam Outfits Ladies Can Slay To Look Outstanding

0

The term “Big Madam” represents far more than just a fashion label—it’s a symbol of refined confidence, timeless beauty, and dignified presence. This style, often embraced by mature and self-assured women, showcases a perfect harmony of traditional African aesthetics with modern fashion sophistication. Big Madam fashion is not just about clothing; it’s about the graceful way these women carry themselves—with poise, power, and unmistakable charm.

A cornerstone of this look is the use of rich, premium fabrics, particularly Ankara, which holds deep cultural significance across Africa. Known for its vibrant colors, bold patterns, and versatility, Ankara is frequently crafted into flowing gowns, fitted blouses, structured peplum tops, and majestic kaftans. It allows women to express their heritage while also displaying creativity and individuality. The fabric’s flexibility makes it ideal for both everyday elegance and grand occasions.

Lace is another key element in the Big Madam wardrobe. Its delicate texture and intricate patterns bring an air of sophistication and femininity to any ensemble. Whether in floor-length gowns or paired with George wrappers for traditional ceremonies, lace radiates a classic charm perfect for weddings, anniversaries, and other formal gatherings.

Accessories are equally essential in completing the Big Madam image. Bold gele headwraps, dazzling jewelry, elegant handbags, and stylish footwear all play an important role in enhancing the outfit. These pieces do more than decorate—they make a statement of confidence and status.

The Big Madam style is about more than fashion—it’s about honoring one’s heritage, embracing maturity, and showcasing inner strength through personal style. It reflects a woman’s journey, pride, and the elegance she brings into every room she enters.

Media must uphold dignity in reporting helicopter crash

The Deputy Government Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim, has appealed to the media for dignified and respectful coverage of the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two cabinet ministers, on Wednesday, August 6.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, August 7, 2025,  Madam Muslim acknowledged the media’s critical role in informing the public but urged restraint in the use of graphic visuals, out of respect for the deceased and their families.

“We pray that the media continue to do a dignified coverage of the disaster,” she said.

“We have pleaded for platforms to delete the harrowing visuals from various networks so that we can provide dignified coverage and still balance the need for the public to know what happened, respecting the family and their spouses.”

Ms. Muslim stressed the need to avoid the circulation of distressing images, particularly those captured shortly after the crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

“We will communicate in real time the various actions that we are going to be taking,” she noted. “It is safe to say that we are all doing what it takes to ease the pain for the families, the government, and put in place all the necessary plans.”

She added that the planning committee is working to ensure a smooth and solemn process for honouring the victims.

According to Eric Alagidede, Dr. Omane Boamah was part of the medical team that offered rescue services to victims of the May 9 Stadium disaster and was very passionate about football as a supporter of Asante Kotoko.

He also praised him for being a leader who always wanted to get his hands dirty, because such a trait is rare in African leaders.

Afia Schwarzenegger Blasts EOCO Boss Over Shatta Wale’s Lamborghini Seizure

The controversial Ghanaian media personality criticised the action of the authorities, terming it unnecessary and uncalled for. She also raved at what she described as disorder among law enforcers in the country.

In her critique, Afia Schwarzenegger cited the persistent problem of kidnapping and illegal mining, which she believed had taken a back seat in favour of the apparent theft of a luxury vehicle.

She wondered why, rather than addressing these more pressing issues, authorities appeared preoccupied with what is reported to be a fraudulent activity involving a vehicle owned by Shatta Wale.

“Kidnapping and illegal mining still persist, yet nothing is being done about it,” she stated.

Schwarzenegger slams authorities over Shatta Wale’s Lamborghini

Adding a touch of humor to her commentary, Schwarzenegger sarcastically remarked that if the vehicle’s origins justified its seizure, then her own twin sons were ‘stolen’ by Ibrahim Mahama.

She joked that, by the same logic, they should also be returned. The comment served to emphasise her point about what she perceives as a misplaced focus by the authorities.

This lambasting comes after the EOCO’s actions on August 5, 2025.

The agency confiscated Shatta Wale’s Lamborghini, linking it to a criminal investigation involving Nana Kwabena Amuah, an individual currently serving a prison sentence in the US.

On Facebook, the Ghanaian musician shared a series of posts on Facebook after the news of the EOCO raiding his nemesis’ Trassaco mansion popped up.

Shatta Wale also claimed that the EOCO’s actions would tarnish former President John Dramani Mahama’s reputation as the leader of Ghana.

Who do I turn to now? – Sam George grieves loss of mentor Omane Boamah

0

Sam George and Omane Boamah

Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Samuel Nartey George, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, who perished in Wednesday’s tragic military helicopter crash.

In a sombre Facebook post, Sam George shared the depth of his sorrow, describing Dr. Boamah not only as a political ally but also as a mentor, father figure, and personal confidant.

“No one has had a greater influence on my political journey. I called you Boss, and you called me Bro,” he wrote. “You didn’t just guide me professionally — you loved and cared for my family. You chose the school for my children and always asked how they were doing each term.”

Clearly shaken, George admitted the loss has left him struggling to maintain his composure and questioning his faith.

“For the past seven months, you’ve been my anchor since I took office as Minister — preparing me for Cabinet meetings and showing me how to navigate my role. Now I ask, who do I turn to?” he said.

Dr. Boamah was among eight victims of the Ghana Air Force Z9 helicopter crash near Adansi in the Ashanti Region on August 6. The aircraft, which was travelling from Accra to Obuasi, lost radar contact shortly after takeoff.

Also killed in the incident were Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, and three members of the Ghana Armed Forces.

President John Mahama has directed that national flags be flown at half-mast in honour of the deceased.

The country remains in mourning as it comes to terms with the devastating loss of some of its most dedicated public servants.

Helicopter makes emergency landing in Ajumako Kokoben amid bad weather

0

Residents of Ajumako Kokoben in Ghana’s Central Region were startled on Wednesday afternoon, August 6, 2025, when a helicopter made an emergency landing at the Presby school park due to adverse weather conditions.

The aircraft, bearing the registration 9G-ADW, was carrying four passengers when it ran into poor visibility and turbulent winds mid-flight. Faced with worsening weather and potential safety risks, the pilot made a precautionary decision to land in an open field that appeared to be part of a local school compound.

The unexpected landing attracted large crowds from the surrounding community, many of whom gathered in awe to witness the rare scene.

Local residents reported that the helicopter remained on the ground for roughly an hour as the crew monitored weather updates and ensured it was safe to resume the journey.

Fortunately, the landing was smooth, and no injuries or damages were reported. Once conditions improved, the helicopter took off and continued its flight without further complications.

The emergency landing occurred just hours after a tragic military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, which claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

While unrelated, the two incidents occurring on the same day heightened public concern over aviation safety and weather monitoring protocols across the country.

Aviation authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the emergency landing in Ajumako Kokoben, but sources close to the flight suggest the pilot’s decision was in line with standard safety procedures in the face of deteriorating weather.

Residents of Kwahu Obomeng in the Eastern Region have been left heartbroken and in shock following the sudden death of their native, Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah.

A street in the town is named in his honour — — a testament to the pride the community felt for one of its most distinguished sons.

News of his passing has cast a shadow of grief across the town, with many describing him not only as a prominent statesman but also as a son of the land who never lost touch with his roots.

In an interview with Akwasi Dwamena, some residents expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident.

“When we heard that our father, Omane Boamah, had passed away, in fact, everybody was sad. It came to us as a shock because if we look at how he conducts himself and does his things, the residents of Obomeng have lost a great person,” one resident said.

Locals remembered him as approachable, humble, and committed to community development. They noted that he frequently returned to Obomeng to meet directly with residents, listen to their concerns, and share in their hopes.

“When he comes to the community, we meet with him one-on-one and chat with him,” another resident said. “So we were hopeful that whatever happens, he could help the Obomeng township.”

His close engagement with the youth stood out most. Many said the pain of his loss was even more intense because of the hope he gave them for future opportunities.

“He was someone who worked with the youth, so when we heard that he had passed away this afternoon, before God and man, we were very sad. Obomeng township has really lost a great person.”

An elderly woman also described Dr. Omane Boamah as a man who treated both the young and old with generosity and respect.

“Obomeng residents were thrilled because of how generous Dr. Omane Boamah was and how he conducted himself. The youth of this town would have gotten jobs because of him, but sadly, he’s gone,” she lamented.

“When he comes to the community, he’s free with everyone, especially the elderly. After the elections, we heard he would come and create employment for the youth of this town, but sadly, we didn’t hear good news.”

“It’s very sad. The whole community is silent because a great man has fallen. We are very sad,” she added.

Dr. Boamah and seven others died in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

They were en route to Obuasi on a national assignment.

Kenya, Namibia mourn victims of Ghana Helicopter crash

0

The President of Kenya, William Ruto, has extended his condolences to the Government and people of Ghana following the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two cabinet ministers.

The crash, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, led to the deaths of Ghana’s Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; Environment Minister, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed; and six others, including senior military officers and government officials.

In a post on his official Facebook page on Thursday, President Ruto expressed Kenya’s solidarity with Ghana in this time of national mourning.

“We extend our condolences to H.E. President John Mahama, the Government, the people of Ghana, and the bereaved families following a tragic helicopter crash that killed eight people, including two ministers,” he wrote.

“We stand in solidarity with Ghana in mourning this profound loss and offer our thoughts and prayers during this time of sorrow. Rest in peace.”

President Ruto joins a growing number of African and global leaders expressing grief and support as Ghana grapples with the sudden loss of some of its most senior public officials. In response to the tragedy, national flags across Ghana have been ordered to fly at half-mast as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.

Meanwhile, the President of Namibia, Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, also conveyed her country’s sorrow and solidarity in a message addressed to President John Dramani Mahama.

President Nandi-Ndaitwah described the crash as a loss not only for Ghana but for the African continent, given the significant contributions of the deceased to public service and Pan-African cooperation.

“The loss of these dedicated leaders is not only a tragedy for Ghana but for the African continent as a whole. Their untimely passing leaves a void in public service and leadership that will be deeply mourned,” she stated.

She reaffirmed Namibia’s longstanding friendship with Ghana, rooted in shared histories of liberation and a mutual commitment to African unity.

“In this spirit of enduring friendship, we stand in unity with the people of Ghana as you mourn these great sons and daughters of your nation. May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace, and may the Government and people of Ghana find strength and comfort during this difficult time.”

He was the only son of his mother; this is hard – Dr. Afriyie grieves Omane Boamah’s death

0

The Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, has expressed grief and disbelief following the tragic death of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah in Wednesday’s military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.

In an emotional interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Dr. Afriyie, who is a cousin of the late minister, revealed he was the only son of his mother—a development he says makes the loss even more painful.

According to him, he cannot fathom how Dr. Boamah left home on Wednesday morning for national duty, unaware it would be his final goodbye.

“You just left the house this morning, and everybody was saying, you know, ‘bye to Daddy,’ thinking that Daddy will come back home,” he said, his voice cracking. “I just don’t know how Rita and the family are taking it. It’s devastating.”

Dr. Afriyie confirmed that Dr. Boamah had three children, adding with sorrow, “He was the only child of his mother. This is just too painful.”

He described Dr. Boamah as a genuine, hard-working man whose death leaves a heavy void not only in his family but also in national service.

“You just can’t say you don’t like him. Kofi is genuine. I’m just shocked. I’m just shocked.”

Recounting one of their recent interactions, the MP revealed that the minister had attended a Defence and Interior Committee sitting in Parliament just last week.

“I didn’t know that would be the last time I would be speaking to my brother,” he noted.

Dr. Afriyie also touched on how closely connected Dr. Boamah was to people across professions, including a senior journalist battling leukemia who had leaned on the late minister for financial support.

“He was more than a politician; he was a friend, a brother.”

Reflecting on the weight of public service, Dr. Afriyie questioned why tragedy should strike those who simply sought to serve their country with integrity.

“What at all will calm the children down? I just don’t. You want to make a good name. He was very promising, very promising. Why should this happen?”

The helicopter crash claimed eight lives, including Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and is being described by government as a national tragedy.

Other victims included Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, former Obuasi East parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

SMEs urged to adopt robust, consistent record-keeping practices

0

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) have been encouraged to adopt robust and consistent record-keeping practices as a cornerstone for business sustainability, financial credibility and access to funding.

Speaking during the 6th edition of the Access Bank–Deloitte SME Business Interaction Series, held here on Tuesday, Gilbert Yirenkyi Addo, Associate Director at Deloitte Ghana, described poor record-keeping as a major barrier hindering the financial development of many SMEs.

According to him, most businesses were unable to present credible financial statements and documents that were crucial not only for sound business decision-making but also for demonstrating financial credibility to lenders and investors.

The event was attended by key stakeholders in the SME ecosystem to discuss practical solutions for improving business resilience and growth.

“Maintaining accurate records forms the foundation for reliable financial documentation,” Mr Addo emphasised.

He said “Many SMEs fail to meet the basic requirements for accessing loans, often due to poor financial documentation, and this forces them to rely on high-cost credits that ultimately impede their growth and expansion.”

He further explained that proper records were essential in determining actual income and expenses, which were key in calculating a business’s tax liability.

“Without records, you may understate income, which can lead to penalties, or overstate income and pay more tax than necessary,” he added, stressing the importance of transparent bookkeeping.

Speaking to The Ghanaian Times at the event, Pascal Akanlu, Zonal Head for Business Banking at Access Bank Ghana, reiterated the bank’s unwavering commitment to supporting SMEs with a combination of capacity-building, financial education and flexible financing solutions.

“Access Bank continues to empower SMEs through a robust series of training initiatives, digital literacy programs, and tailored financial support, positioning them as key drivers of economic growth and resilience,” Mr Akanlu stated.

He noted that the bank’s SME strategy extended beyond financial access and included advisory services and capacity building designed to strengthen the competitiveness and long-term sustainability of businesses across various sectors.

The event which gathered about 300 participants, formed part of the broader SME Business Interaction Series, jointly organized by Access Bank Ghana and Deloitte Ghana, aimed at equipping small businesses with the skills, knowledge and resources needed to thrive in today’s challenging economic environment.

Previous editions of the series in Tamale, Koforidua, Ho and Kumasi have covered themes such as risk management, business planning, tax compliance, and sustainability.

Minority slams government over ‘insulting’ cocoa farm gate price for 2025/26 season

0

Ranking Member of the Committee of Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs, Isaac Yaw Opoku Ranking Member of the Committee of Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs, Isaac Yaw Opoku

The Minority Caucus on Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs has strongly criticised the government over what it describes as an “insultingly low” cocoa farm gate price announced for the 2025/2026 cocoa season

At a press conference on Monday, the Ranking Member of the Committee, Isaac Yaw Opoku, expressed disappointment at the new farm gate price of GH₵3,228.75 per 64-kilogram bag, representing only a 4.2% increase from the previous season’s GH₵3,100.00.

He described the increment as a betrayal of Ghana’s cocoa farmers, calling it a “Sakawa price” that falls far short of expectations, especially considering the current high international market prices.

“This is a slap in the face of farmers who have sustained the economy for decades,” he stated.

The Minority also reminded the public of campaign pledges made by top NDC figures — now ministers — Eric Opoku and Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, who promised cocoa farmers GH₵6,000 and GH₵7,000 per bag, respectively, if their party won power.

The Minority Caucus questioned why those promises had not materialised and described the current pricing as a far cry from what was pledged.

The opposition questioned the rationale behind the government’s pricing model, especially in light of claims by the COCOBOD Chief Executive that Ghana’s farm gate price would exceed what Ivorian farmers currently receive.

Available data, however, indicates that farmers in Côte d’Ivoire are paid approximately GH₵3,635 per bag — nearly GH₵407 more than Ghanaian farmers — further fueling concerns about smuggling and cross-border trading.

The Minority also raised concerns about the government’s failure to deliver on President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to pay cocoa farmers 70% of the Free on Board (FOB) price.

With global cocoa prices reaching as high as $12,000 per metric ton, they argue that Ghanaian farmers should be receiving at least GH₵3,718 per bag, not the GH₵3,228.75 announced.

They demanded full transparency on cocoa revenue from the 2024/25 season and accountability for transfers and grants received since the start of 2025.

The government was also accused of repackaging essential farm inputs such as fertilisers and insecticides as “free,” when in reality, the cost is deducted from the FOB price, further shortchanging farmers.

According to the Minority, many cocoa farmers feel deceived and demoralised by the new pricing structure, with some already considering abandoning cocoa cultivation in favour of illegal mining due to the poor returns on their labour.

They urged the government to urgently review the announced price, deliver on its promises, and implement a pricing policy that truly reflects the value and contribution of Ghana’s cocoa farmers to the national economy.

“The sustainability of Ghana’s cocoa industry is at stake,” the statement concluded.

“We must act now to restore dignity, fairness, and hope to our farmers.”

Eye-Catching White Lace Dresses To Replicate

0

White lace has long been admired for its timeless elegance and delicate charm, making it a staple fabric in the wardrobes of sophisticated women, especially mothers who appreciate both tradition and modern fashion. Its intricate patterns and soft texture give it a uniquely graceful appeal, suitable for various occasions and personal styles.

One of the most popular ways to wear white lace is through dresses, particularly for formal or semi-formal events like weddings, christenings, church services, or garden parties. A knee-length white lace dress with a fit-and-flare silhouette enhances the figure while offering comfort and versatility. This style transitions effortlessly from day to evening wear—paired with heels, it radiates elegance, while flats or sandals tone it down for a casual, chic daytime ensemble.

Beyond dresses, white lace blouses are must-have staples in every mother’s closet. These tops pair beautifully with tailored skirts or trousers, adding a feminine touch to workwear or everyday outfits. Design details like sheer sleeves, embroidered patterns, or scalloped edges elevate a simple blouse into a statement piece, blending modesty with refined fashion.

White lace is also perfect for outerwear. Lace-detailed jackets or cardigans are ideal layering pieces, especially in mild weather. They add sophistication without unnecessary bulk, making them practical and stylish for both formal and casual settings.

Accessories crafted from white lace—such as scarves, handbags, or gloves—offer an easy way to integrate the fabric subtly into daily looks. These accents provide texture and visual interest, enhancing even the simplest outfit with understated elegance.

White lace offers mothers a graceful way to showcase timeless beauty while embracing modern trends. Whether in clothing or accessories, it remains a symbol of polished femininity, making it an enduring favorite for women of style and substance.

Independent investigation needed into military helicopter crash – BPS

0

The Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) has called for an independent and transparent investigation into the military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6.

The crash, which has plunged the nation into mourning, resulted in the deaths of high-profile officials, including the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. Also on board were senior national security personnel and crew members of the Ghana Armed Forces.

In a statement issued on Thursday, August 7, 2025, the BPS described the incident as a national tragedy and urged the government and the military to go beyond internal inquiries and adopt international best practices for accident investigations.

“The tragedy calls not only for empathy but for a credible, evidence-based investigation and transparent communication,” the statement said.

The Bureau is advocating for the use of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Annex 13 guidelines, which, though designed for civil aviation, represent global best practices in accident investigation.

According to the BPS, the principles of thorough analysis, impartiality, and public accountability are equally relevant in military contexts and are essential to building public trust and ensuring institutional learning.

As part of its demands, the Bureau called on authorities to release a preliminary public report within 30 days, provide regular updates on the progress of the investigation, and communicate clearly about the composition and leadership of the investigation team.

The BPS also cautioned the public against speculation, warning that premature conclusions could distort facts and undermine confidence in the investigation process.

In seeking full clarity, the Bureau requested that investigators publicly address key aspects of the crash, including the flight’s planning and purpose, the maintenance history of the aircraft, the qualifications and preparedness of the flight crew, and any communications made by the helicopter prior to the crash.

It also urged the government to outline its protocols for family support and communication in the aftermath of such tragedies.

“This is a moment that calls for national unity, truth, and action,” the statement said. “The lessons we draw from this tragedy must lead to stronger safety systems and enhanced operational accountability—both in our skies and on the ground.”

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces is expected to lead the official investigation into the crash, while tributes continue to pour in for the fallen officials.

The government has ordered all national flags to be flown at half-mast, and funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.

Ghana’s Day of Tragedy Turns Day of Shame

0

In the aftermath of one of the most devastating national tragedies in recent memory—the military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight Ghanaians, including two cabinet ministers—Ghana is now grappling with a different kind of grief: shame.

What began as a solemn moment of collective mourning was soon marred by what many have described as a disturbing and insensitive display of media sensationalism, as images and videos of the crash site flooded national television and social media platforms.

Absa expands access to clean water in underserved communities across 11 regions

0

Absa Bank Ghana LTD has successfully commissioned 10 new boreholes across the country as part of Phase II of its Water for Life Project, an initiative under the Social Impact Response Pillar of its Force for Good agenda.

This milestone brings the total number of boreholes constructed to 21, spanning all 11 regions where the bank operates.

The Water for Life Project is Absa’s strategic response to the growing need for clean and reliable water in underserved communities. To date, the initiative has positively impacted over 37,000 people—particularly women and children—by improving public health, sanitation, and reducing the daily burden of accessing water.

Speaking on the initiative, Dr Edward Nartey Botchway, Managing Director of Absa Bank Ghana LTD, said:

“At Absa, we believe access to safe water is not a luxury but a right. Through this project, we are not just addressing immediate needs but investing in public health, dignity, and opportunity for entire communities.”

As part of the Phase II rollout, Dr Botchway joined the Member of Parliament for the Krowor Constituency, Dr Mrs Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, and the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Paul Quaye, to commission a Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Plant and Borehole at the LEKMA Polyclinic in Nungua.

Due to the area’s coastal location, groundwater is highly saline and unsuitable for drinking. The newly installed reverse osmosis system removes salt and other impurities, ensuring a steady supply of clean, safe water for both the clinic and the surrounding community.

Dr Mrs Naa Momo Lartey praised Absa’s intervention:

“Water is life, and by choosing to enter Krowor with the gift of water, Absa has entered the heart of our community—where life is created and preserved. This partnership shows that our story truly matters.”

Dr William Frimpong, Medical Superintendent at the Nungua LEKMA Polyclinic, added:

“This intervention ensures a consistent water supply, supports sterile medical environments, and saves the clinic the cost of purchasing water. It is a blessing to our patients and staff.”

In addition to the Nungua commissioning, senior executives from Absa led parallel ceremonies across the country. Adolph Kpegah, Chief Strategy and Operations Officer at Absa, commissioned the borehole in Whindo, Takoradi, while Fred Nyinaku, Chief Operating Officer, led the event at Akropong Abiriw. Regional managers commissioned additional boreholes in various communities within their respective areas.

Through its Force for Good strategy, Absa Bank Ghana remains committed to delivering life-enhancing solutions that uplift lives and empower communities across the country.

He also holds a Master’s degree in Development Planning and International Relations and Diplomacy from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Ghana respectively.

He has a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Mount Crest University and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Ghana.

Shock

Mohammed Fugu reports from Tamale that a wave of shock and profound sorrow has swept through the Tamale Central Constituency, and for that matter, the Northern Region, following the tragic death of Dr Muhammed.

The heartbreaking news had plunged party members, sympathisers, and the entire community into a state of mourning, with many people gathering at the party office, struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of a man they described as a “dedicated servant, humble leader, and a champion of the people”.

The NDC Tamale Central Constituency Communication Officer, Umar Abdul Razak, described Dr Murtala’s death as a monumental loss to the entire nation.

“I believe that Murtala would be pardoned by Almighty Allah because he was a practising Muslim. He died on national duty,” he said.

Mr Razak recounted how earlier in the day, the MP had tasked him to inform constituency elders about a planned sod-cutting ceremony for a new health facility, assuring him he would return later that evening to finalise arrangements.

He added that the MP had sent him money to settle hospital bills for some party members earlier that morning — a final act of kindness that reflected Dr Murtala’s deep commitment to the welfare of his people.

A constituent, Mohammed Musah, also described the late MP as a very kind person to all, irrespective of party affiliation.

“Many people depend on him for school fees and medical bills,” he said.

Moments after the announcement of the incident, the Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, led a delegation to inform the family about the tragic demise of the MP.

Hundreds of people have since gathered at the family house of the late MP to mourn with them.

Abuakwa South MP mourns victims of August 6 helicopter crash

Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including his former schoolmate and senior, Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah.

In a heartfelt tribute shared on Wednesday, Dr. Agyemang mourned the devastating loss and reflected on the ultimate sacrifice made by public servants who dedicate their lives to the nation.

The crash, which occurred earlier in the day in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, involved a Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter en route to Obuasi.

It claimed the lives of high-ranking officials including Dr. Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

Reports suggest the officials were on a mission related to the ongoing fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Dr. Agyemang described the moment as a “great national loss,” emphasizing the dangers that often accompany public service.

“This painful moment reminds us of the quiet risks borne each day by those who serve our country. Their sacrifice, though often unseen, is real, and in this instance, ultimate,” he wrote.

He called on Ghanaians and the government to honour the memory of the fallen not only with tributes but through decisive action against the menace they were confronting.

“If these gallant men were on their way to confront the scourge of illegal mining, then the fight against galamsey must now assume the same urgency with which we respond to death itself,” he urged. “We owe them more than tributes; we owe them commitment and action.”

The tribute concluded with a solemn prayer for the repose of their souls and a call for national reflection.

This message adds to a growing wave of condolences and tributes pouring in from political leaders, civil society actors, and citizens across the country as Ghana mourns one of its deadliest military aviation disasters in recent memory.

Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana Cocoa is a key export commodity for Ghana

The Majority Caucus in Parliament has strongly defended the current cocoa producer price set by the Mahama-led administration for the 2025/2026 crop season, dismissing criticisms that farmers are being shortchanged.

Addressing journalists in Accra, Chairman of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, Eric Afful, explained that the government has significantly increased the Free on Board (FOB) price of cocoa from $4,850 to $7,200 per metric tonne.

This adjustment, he noted, justifies the new farmgate price of GH¢3,228 per 64-kilogram bag for cocoa farmers.

According to Afful, this upward adjustment reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring fair compensation for farmers in line with global cocoa market trends.

“The living conditions of cocoa farmers under the Mahama administration are better, especially given the current economic realities,” he stated.

In a related disclosure, the Majority Caucus revealed that the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) is currently saddled with a debt of $840 million due to delays in the delivery of 333,000 metric tonnes of cocoa to international clients for the 2023/2024 crop season.

The Caucus attributed the delay to global supply chain disruptions and adverse weather conditions that affected production volumes.

Despite this, they maintained that the government is working to honour its commitments and stabilise the cocoa sector.

The Majority’s defense follows criticism from the Minority Caucus, who argue that cocoa farmers are being underpaid despite record-high global prices.

However, the Majority insists that the pricing formula reflects economic prudence, considering factors such as exchange rate stability, inflation, and international cocoa pricing.

They also pointed to broader interventions by the government, including reintroducing free fertiliser distribution and investments in rural infrastructure, as proof of a renewed focus on improving the livelihoods of cocoa farmers.

In a solemn statement issued on Thursday, August 7, the centre extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Ghana during what it described as a “painful time” for the nation.

The centre particularly acknowledged President John Dramani Mahama’s loss, describing it as both personal and national.

“We express our deepest solidarity with His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, as he leads the nation through this dark hour. The loss of two trusted members of his Cabinet is not only a personal blow, but also a profound disruption to the leadership and governance of the country,” the statement read.

It also paid tribute to the exceptional service of the deceased, stating that their legacy must be upheld through principled leadership.

GRA denies indebtedness to NIA

0

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has responded to reports by the National Identification Authority (NIA) claiming that the tax agency has been disconnected from the Identity Verification Platform (IVS) due to unpaid fees.

In a statement issued by its Communication and Public Affairs Department, the GRA expressed surprise over the claims and sought to clarify its position, stressing that no formal service agreement exists between the two agencies to justify the said debt.

According to the GRA, the purported indebtedness stems from what it describes as a “legacy debt” associated with services allegedly rendered by the NIA prior to 2025.

However, GRA indicated that its internal assessment could not confirm any regulatory or governance approvals that sanctioned the transactions in question.

“The GRA’s principles of transparency, compliance, and governance protocols do not permit enforcement of transactions that do not meet regulatory requirements, particularly as demanded by the reset vision of the President and the Government,” the Authority emphasised.

Further deepening the dispute, the GRA revealed that the NIA has operated desk offices at GRA premises across the country for years without paying rent or contributing to utility costs — a gesture made in the spirit of inter-agency cooperation.

Despite the disconnection and public exchanges, GRA says high-level talks are ongoing to resolve the matter.

The Authority maintains that procedural irregularities and the lack of a formal agreement are at the heart of the issue.

While rejecting the premise of the debt, the GRA acknowledged the critical role of inter-agency collaboration, particularly in integrating the Ghana Card into the country’s tax system — a cornerstone of the government’s digital transformation agenda.

The Authority called for improved relations with the NIA and expressed hope that the matter would be resolved amicably in the interest of national development.

“GRA uses this opportunity to reassure taxpayers and the general public of its commitment and adherence to its values of fairness, integrity, responsiveness, service, and teamwork,” the statement concluded.
