Ghana targets $2bn palm oil import cut with new RedGold policy – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Ghana is advancing plans for a bold agricultural policy aimed at slashing its $2 billion annual palm oil import bill.

This would be achieved by significantly scaling up domestic production and diversifying into high-value tree crops.

The plan outlined in the 2025–2028 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework, includes the rollout of a National Palm Oil Industry Policy, which will support the distribution of 1.5 million oil palm seedlings to farmers.

It is also to promote large-scale out-grower plantation schemes and provide incentives to expand local processing capacity.

The initiative, dubbed the “RedGold” oil palm programme, is expected to catalyse private sector investment, create thousands of jobs across rural Ghana and align with the country’s import substitution and agro-industrial transformation agenda.

Despite annual consumption of over 250,000 metric tons, Ghana’s domestic palm oil production currently stands at a mere 50,000 metric tons –  a development which creates a major structural gap in the edible oils market.

The new policy seeks to address this imbalance by developing a fully integrated palm oil value chain—from farm to refinery.

The palm oil strategy falls under the broader Ghana Tree Crops Diversification Project (GTCDP), which aims to boost the commercial cultivation of cashew, coconut, rubber, mango and shea, alongside oil palm, to enhance farmer incomes and generate foreign exchange.

In 2025, the government, through the Ghana Tree Crops Development Programme (GTRDP), will procure and supply 5,070,000 seedlings; comprising 2,000,000 cashew, 1,650,000 rubber, and 1,420,000 coconut—for nationwide distribution.

An additional two million seedlings will be provided, including 500,000 shea and 1,500,000 mango, targeting 500,000 farmers across the country.

Watch as Ghana Armed Forces prepares to receive remains of 8 killed in helicopter crash:

Military fully equipped to protect Ghana

Some officers of the Ghana Armed Forces undergoing training Some officers of the Ghana Armed Forces undergoing training

Deputy Director-General of the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), Dr Jamaldeen Tonzua Seidu, has rejected claims that the Ghana Armed Forces lack the equipment needed to operate effectively and safeguard the country.

His comments come amid public debate over the military’s logistical capacity following the August 6 helicopter crash that killed eight people, including Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah; Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; former Obuasi East parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong; and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, along with three crew members: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Monday, August 11, 2025, Dr. Seidu described as “misleading” suggestions that the Armed Forces are under-equipped.

“What’s the basis for saying we don’t have many operational aircraft or that they are not functioning well? Without evidence, such conclusions have no basis. We should assess what we have statistically against the scale of operations before passing judgment. The Ghana Air Force may well deserve commendation,” he said.

He added that despite Ghana’s socio-economic constraints, the military continues to perform.

“Under very trying circumstances, our men and women in uniform, particularly the Ghana Air Force are doing their best. We are probably doing well, but there is always room for improvement,” he noted.

Stop stigmatising PWDs seeking jobs

0

Philip Duah, the Executive Director, Abak Foundation has advised employers to stop stigmatising qualified persons with disability (PWDs) seeking jobs in their companies.

He said the act was disheartening and shattered their hopes in acquiring decent jobs.

He gave the advice at a dissemination and closeout session of the Economic Empowerment Programme (EEP) of Sightsavers, Abak Foundation, Challenges Worldwide, Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations and inclusion Ghana in Accra.

The two-year programme saw 127 PWDs secure decent jobs either through direct employment or entrepreneurship, after receiving required skills.

The closeout session was to celebrate their achievement, the businesses of PWDs that improved and PWDs who got employment after receiving employability skills.

In a country where formal jobs were difficult to access, Mr Duah said a combination of a pathway of employability and entrepreneurship skill, would help to equip PWDs with the needed skills and knowledge to secure or create decent jobs, hence the relevance of the programme.

“Those who need employment need mentorship and support to catch the eye of the employer and that brought about a lot of training such as building the capacity of PWDs to write CVs and attend interviews,” he said.

David Agyemang, the Country Lead, Sightsavers, explaining the Ghana Economic Empowerment Programme pathways, said the Employability pathway sought to build the skills of persons with disabilities on how to present themselves at interviews and how to write curriculum vitae among others while the Entrepreneurship pathway built their capacity to establish or enhance their businesses.

After the training, he said the employers also did self assessment to identify how prepared they were to employ persons with disability.

“If they should employ a person with disability today, would they be able to handle that person? Would they be able to provide what we call a minimum accommodation for them?, he said”.

Agyemang said after all preparations, they brought all employers engaged together in a network called Ghana Business and Disability Network to make workplaces all-inclusive.

“All these processes that I’m telling you contributed in helping us to transition 127 persons with disabilities into jobs. You know that it’s very difficult to get jobs nowadays, even if you are not having the disabilities.

“If you don’t have a job, you know the challenges that come with it. But then picture, if you are a person with disability, your problem is even bigger, because you have to take care of your family, and at the same time, you have to deal with your disabilities.

“So these people have a lot of challenges they were going through, which I believe this employment will now make things easier for them,” he noted.

Isaac Wabey, a PWD and beneficiary of the programme, sharing his experience said: “I enrolled onto the programme as a job seeker. I was unemployed but I gained soft skills, and knowledge on CV writing among others.

“It was through the training that I secured a formal job and ventured into Entrepreneurship as well.

“Through the EEP, I am now employed, have set up my own business and have set up an NGO to help others,” he added.

Wabey said capacity building was key in giving PWDs competencies and skills to work and earn for a living.

He encouraged the programme’s implementors to promote networking at every gathering to enrich opportunities for all those marginalised.

Melody Emefa, another physically challenged woman and a beneficiary, said it was unfortunate that many people did not understand PWDs and so denied them access to opportunities.

As a producer of “coconut tombrown”, she said an engagement by the EEP took her through periodic monitoring and evaluation on how to keep records and relate to customers to boost her business and it had a great impact on her business.

“They trained me on how to do packaging of the product and assessed to ensure where I am selling was business-friendly enough to attract more customers and they have put a smile on my face,” she added.

Emefa called for more training for PWDs, saying they lagged behind without capacity building and funding support.

Nurses and Midwives Association defends June strike despite unmet demands – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) says its strike in June this year was necessary, even though not all its objectives were achieved.

The nationwide industrial action, which lasted just over two weeks, was suspended on June 13, 2025, after engagements with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health and other stakeholders.

The strike was aimed at compelling the government to implement the 2024 Conditions of Service agreement.

Speaking at the Association’s Time With NEC Nurses’ Café summit, First Vice President Samuel Akolgo Alagkora said some of their demands — including the book and research allowance, the uniform allowance, the fuel allowance, and an 8% allowance — were met.

“Was the strike necessary? Yes, it was. Did we achieve our full aim? No, we did not. But we were able to secure the research allowance, uniform allowance, fuel allowance, and the 8% allowance, which unfortunately created confusion among some of our members.

“The market premium has been frozen to the point where it no longer reflects where it should be,” he noted.

No printers or PCs, Starbucks Korea tells customers

0

Starbucks customers in South Korea have been asked to stop bringing “bulky items” into cafes to do their office work, after some brought printers and desktop computers.

Others had brought in partitions and more than one computer to mark their office territory.

As many people choose to work from home, cafes like Starbucks have been trying to strike a balance between being a casual coffee place and welcoming customers who choose to work there.

Starbucks said laptops, iPads, and mobile phones are still welcome, but not items that “impact the shared space” and limit seating.

Starbucks’s announcement comes as the growing trend of those studying and working at cafes – cagongjok – becomes a subject of intense debate in Korean society.

Since the pandemic, as the trend towards working from home escalates, many have started using the term cagonjok in not-so-friendly terms, showing irritation at those who use the seats for hours after only buying one drink.

Some users in Korea on social media have said cagonjok are also freeloading on electricity.

“If you can’t afford an office space and Starbucks is silly enough to let you run your office there for the price of their less-than-mediocre sugary caffeine beverage, go for it,” said one user on Reddit.

‘Bad manners’

Koreans on social media have been reacting to the announcement from Starbucks.

“Good job,” said one Korean user on social media. “Now that Starbucks has started, other cafes should follow suit”.

Another said that people working from cafes made him stop going to Starbucks, and that the announcement is a “measure against those who’ve crossed the line with their bad manners”.

“It feels like there are way too many people without common sense these days,” the user wrote.

A spokesperson for Starbucks said: “Starbucks Korea has updated its policy so all customers can have a pleasant and accessible store experience.

“While laptops and smaller personal devices are welcome, customers are asked to refrain from bringing desktop computers, printers, or other bulky items that may limit seating and impact the shared space”.

“Starbucks remains committed to being a welcoming third place for coffee and connection, and where community thrives in every cup, every conversation, and every visit”, Starbucks concluded, though its mild-mannered response hides the derision many feel for those seen to be hogging seats at cafes.

Starbucks’s in South Korea move echoes sentiment in cafes across the world, including in England, where some coffee shops have introduced policies aimed at stopping remote workers from “hogging” tables and limiting turnover.

I naturalised as Ghanaian in 1999 – Kojo Choi – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Ghana’s Ambassador Designate to Korea, Kojo Choi, has shared how his father influenced his decision to remain in Ghana and eventually become a naturalised citizen.

Mr Choi said he was 14 years old when he first arrived in Ghana with his Korean Presbyterian missionary parents. He attended SOS College in Tema, where he learned some Twi and later picked up a bit of the Frafra language.

Choi, who was born in Seoul, South Korea, said he has lived in Ghana since his adolescence and was naturalised as a Ghanaian in 1999.

Speaking on Channel One’s Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Tuesday, August 12, Kojo Choi said, “I was born in South Korea, I came here [Ghana] when I was 14 years old, I followed my parents. I lived in Seoul, the province where I was born. My parents were sent here as Korean Presbyterian missionaries. Ever since I came here, I have actually lived a unique life.”

Choi revealed that after completing SOS College, he had the opportunity to study in the United States. However, his father advised him to stay in Ghana and build a unique life.

He said that decision led him to take Ghanaian citizenship in 1999 — a choice he has never regretted.

“I had the opportunity of going to study in the US. At SOS college, everybody had the opportunity to apply to 15 to 20 universities to get admission. I was going to apply, and my father one day called me and sat me down, and said, ‘Son, why do you want to leave Ghana. You could stay here, and you could be a different person altogether. Honestly, I wanted to leave but decided to stay. And made a solemn vow to myself that I was not going back, and that was when I naturalised in 1999.”

His appointment generated debate on social media, with some critics questioning why the role was not given to a Ghanaian by birth.

Responding to such concerns, Choi said his life in Ghana has been unique and deeply rooted in the country’s culture and society.

‘It goes a long way to help Ghana football’ – Vision FC boss Nana Agyemang on GFA’s GHS 1 million initiative – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Vision FC boss Nana Agyemang has lauded the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) latest financial intervention, which will see every Ghana Premier League club receive ₵1 million ahead of the upcoming season.

Reacting to the initiative by the GFA which was confirmed at the 31st Congress, Agyemang described the package as a huge boost for player welfare and club stability.

“I’m sure the players are jumping about by now. Most clubs suffered last year in terms of salary payments and stuff like that. A lot of clubs were behind. Players would cry out, but I think with this money, players are gonna be more settled and able to go into their games without thinking about financial burden anymore,” he said.

The Vision FC manager urged club owners to use the funds wisely, stressing the importance of channelling it towards player care and operational improvement.

“My hope is that the club owners will use these monies to take care of the players and the club as a whole. If that happens, coaches can do a good job, and everything will go well.”

Agyemang ended his remarks with high praise for the GFA leadership.

“Kudos to the GFA, kudos to Kurt for being able to get this for the clubs. It goes a long way to help Ghana football.”

With the 2025/26 GPL season kicking off on September 12, Agyemang will be aiming to build on Vision FC’s 11th-place finish from last season.

Negative prophecy creates vacuum for attack – Bishop Elvis Kessey

Senior Pastor of Victory Bible Church International, Bishop Dr Elvis Kessey Senior Pastor of Victory Bible Church International, Bishop Dr Elvis Kessey

The Senior Pastor of Victory Bible Church International, Victory Cathedral, Bishop Dr Elvis Kessey has revealed that negative prophecies create vacuum for the enemy to attack.

According to Bishop Kessey, who is also a Prophet, any prophecy whether from God or not has the tendency to happen.

“Once a prophecy is uttered, there is a probability of it to manifest whether it is from God or not and therefore Prophets must be careful how they reveal utterances in public” he explained.

He was speaking on Adinkra Radio New York with Daakyehene Ofosu Agyeman in response to a statement by Presidential Envoy for the Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations Office, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah on a new directive requiring religious leaders to submit prophecies of national significance for official review.

In a letter issued on Sunday, August 10, 2025, the office urged clergy across the country to formally present any prophecy or spiritual insight relating to high-profile political leaders, governance, national security, or public stability to its office for urgent assessment.

This comes in the wake of viral videos on social media following the August 6 helicopter crash that killed eight people, including two cabinet ministers.

In the videos, some self-proclaimed men of God claimed they had foreseen the crash in visions and issued warnings that were ignored.

Bishop Kessey welcomed the idea from the Presidency and added that it is not every prophecy that is meant for public consumption.

“Prophecies concerning high profile people must be handled with wisdom as Nathan did in the Bible when there was a direct message to King David” he explained.

He revealed further that Angels are assigned task if the prophecy is from God and the same way demons and principalities follow up on any negative message from the devil.

Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Dr Nii Moi Thompson Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Dr Nii Moi Thompson

Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Dr Nii Moi Thompson, has urged the government to intensify its fight against illegal mining (galamsey) as a lasting tribute to the eight people killed in the August 6 helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.

The victims, including senior government officials and security personnel were reportedly en route to Obuasi to launch the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme, aimed at helping illegal miners adopt responsible and sustainable practices.

Speaking to Citi News on Monday, August 11, 2025, after signing the book of condolences at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) headquarters, Dr. Thompson stressed that the best way to honour the deceased is through decisive action against galamsey.

“They were flying there as part of efforts to fight galamsey. The most befitting tribute to their memory is to decisively eliminate the menace. We cannot shed crocodile tears, we must work hard to ensure they did not die in vain,” he said.

Those killed in the crash included Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah; Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed; former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; and NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, along with three crew members, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

A state funeral for the victims will be held on Friday, August 15, 2025, at Black Star Square in Accra.

CSOs urge inclusion of vulnerable population in green economy transition

0

Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have called on the nation to ensure that its vulnerable population is not left behind in the transition to a green economy.

According to the CSOs an inclusive policy that amplified the voices of the marginalized communities and groups, including the youthful population was required to advance climate justice in the country.

The CSOs, ActionAid Ghana, Global Media Foundation (GloMeF), Citizens Watch Ghana, and the Young Urban Women made the call at a youth forum to mark the 2025 International Youth Day (IYD) in Sunyani.

With support from the National Youth Authority, the CSOs organized the forum on the theme “Igniting youth leadership potential through multilateral cooperation for social accountability”.

The IYD which falls on August 12, was instituted by the United Nations and celebrated annually to bring youth issues to the attention of governments, with this year’s celebration focusing on empowering the youth to help build a better planet for all.

Kwame Afram Denkyira, the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Manager Programme Manager of the AAG indicated that a decentralized climate adaptation effort was needed to allow vulnerable communities to design solutions based on their local realities.

He said: “Climate justice in Ghana is therefore about more than survival; it’s about dignity, equity and the right to a sustainable future”, saying “as the country strides towards development, integrating justice into climate action isn’t just a moral obligation but a practical necessity”.

Denkyira noted that challenges facing young people in securing decent jobs increased their vulnerability in society and thereby making them vulnerable to social vices and source of conflict and civil disorders as well as violence extremism.

He added that “They are more likely to accept recruitment into fighting forces when they face high incidence of joblessness”, and called on the government to do more and create job opportunities for the youthful population.

In a speech read on his behalf, Joseph Addae Akwaboa, the Bono Regional Minister said the government remained committed to creating an enabling environment for young people to thrive.

He indicated that the government fostering global cooperation and collaboration in all sectors was an indication that President John Dramani Mahama remained committed to creating jobs for the teeming youth to exploit their potentials.

He said: “As we speak now the government will soon roll out Cultural Villages and Creative Arts Fund to provide financial support to the youth to establish creative enterprises, fostering growth and sustainability of our creative sector”.

Akwaboa lauded the growing number of youth climate activists, innovators in renewable energy and student-led environment movements across Ghana and Africa, stressing the government commitment to strengthen climate change education, invest in green jobs, and incorporate youth voices in national climate change strategies.

Raphael Godlove Ahenu, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the GloMeF, a human rights and anti-corruption media advocacy organization stressed the need to explore the possibilities of uniting the voices of young people from the Global South and Global North for action.

“This is not only to address shared global challenges, but also to strengthen solidarity, equity, and innovation in tackling issues such as climate change, social injustice, digital exclusion, and democratic deficits”, he stated.

Ahenu stated that the climate crisis knew no borders, however solutions often reflected the Northern narratives and stressed the need to co-create inclusive climate actions, and champion equitable access to digital infrastructure.

Ghana Armed Forces cautions media over speculative reports on helicopter crash

0

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has urged media practitioners, commentators, bloggers, and content creators to exercise caution and avoid speculative or unverified reports about the recent military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.

In a statement signed by Captain (GN) V. A. Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations, the Armed Forces expressed concern over “many speculative and unsubstantiated commentaries” surrounding the Z-9 Air Force helicopter crash.

“For the sake of the bereaved families and loved ones, the Armed Forces urges media practitioners, panellists, social commentators, bloggers and content creators to be circumspect in their reportage as a way of according respect to the memories of the fallen heroes and to mitigate the sorrows of the bereaved families,” the statement read.

The GAF acknowledged the intense public interest in the tragedy and assured that thorough investigations have begun to determine the cause of the crash.

It added that the process will include collaboration with international agencies to ensure a comprehensive probe.

“At this point in time, any purported conclusions based on opinions, perceptions and conjectures will be premature and misleading. The public is therefore advised to be wary of such reportage,” the statement warned.

The Armed Forces expressed appreciation to the government, institutions, and individuals for their support during this period of national mourning and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

“May the souls of our patriots continue to rest in peace,” the statement concluded.

Prophets must exercise restraint – Bishop Osei Bonsu

0

Bishop Emeritus of the Konongo-Mampong Catholic Diocese, Most Rev Joseph Osei Bonsu Bishop Emeritus of the Konongo-Mampong Catholic Diocese, Most Rev Joseph Osei Bonsu

Bishop Emeritus of the Konongo-Mampong Catholic Diocese, Most Rev Joseph Osei Bonsu, has urged Ghanaian clergy and prophets to show discretion and sensitivity when delivering prophecies, especially those with potentially harmful implications.

His appeal follows a directive from the Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, requiring that any prophecy or spiritual insight concerning senior political leaders, governance, national security, or public stability be formally submitted for urgent review.

The measure was announced on Sunday, August 10, 2025, after viral social media videos linked to the August 6 helicopter crash that killed eight people, including two cabinet ministers.

Speaking to Citi News on Monday, August 11, 2025, Bishop Osei Bonsu cautioned that modern prophecy should move beyond frequent predictions of death and disaster.

“If God has revealed something to you, find the right way to go about it. In the Old Testament, prophets were sent to preach God’s word and guide people toward righteousness, they did not constantly prophesy doom and gloom. Our prophets should learn from that,” he said.

Afriyie Ankrah, while stressing there would be no arrests for non-compliance, said prophets who ignore the directive should expect public judgment.

“There is nothing like an arrest, but society will judge them if they don’t obey. They used to complain about lacking access to victims, and now they have been given that access,” he noted.

Preacher remanded over alleged incest and assault

0

A 40-year-old preacher, Godwin Asher, has been remanded into police custody by the Kwabenya Circuit Court for alleged incest and causing harm to his biological daughter.

Asher, a mason, pleaded not guilty to both charges.

His counsel, Godfred Anim Darko, argued that the accusation stemmed from disciplinary action taken against the 17-year-old victim, who had allegedly stayed away from home for several days.

Anim Darko told the court that the facts presented by the prosecution were completely different from what his client had told him.

He further contended that Asher had raised the victim since childhood and denied any sexual abuse.

Anim Darko proposed that the victim be placed in the care of one of her uncles and requested bail for the accused, stating that Asher was not a flight risk and had family and congregants present in court willing to stand as sureties.

The prosecution opposed the bail application, stating that Asher resided in the same house as the victim.

The court declined bail and remanded Asher to reappear on August 25, 2025.

The prosecution told the court that the complainant is a 64-year-old beautician and neighbour of the accused at Ashongman Estate.

On August 2, 2025, the complainant observed the victim bleeding from her right palm and enquired about the cause.

The victim reportedly said, “She held the cutlass and accused pulled the cutlass which resulted in a deep cut in the victim’s hands,” while attempting to defend herself during an alleged beating by her father.

The complainant assisted the victim to the police station and lodged a complaint.

Investigations revealed that the accused had allegedly been having sexual intercourse with the victim, with the last incident occurring on July 30, 2025.

A police medical form was issued, and the victim was examined and treated.

A seven-member governing board of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has been inaugurated to promote fairness and transparency in public sector compensation.

Inaugurating the board, Dr Rashid Pelpuo, Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, urged members to uphold equity in public sector pay administration.

He said the Commission played a pivotal role in promoting good governance and fairness in public sector compensation.

Dr Pelpuo underscored the challenges of managing the public service wage bill within a sustainable economic framework and reiterated the need for an Independent Emoluments Commission to address disparities in wage administration.

He congratulated the board members and commended their willingness to serve the nation.

The minister tasked the Board with developing mechanisms to reduce labour unrest arising from pay inequities.

“I assure you of my full cooperation and support in your work,” he said, expressing confidence in their expertise and commitment.

Ghana striker Ransford-Yeboah Konigsdorffer has declared himself ready for the upcoming season in Germany with Hamburger SV.

The German-born Black Stars forward was close to leaving the newly promoted Bundesliga side following a move to join French outfit OGC Nice.

However, the deal fell through in the eleventh hour due to medical reasons.

Despite admitting his disappointment over the failed move, Konigsdorffer is poised for the new campaign which begins with a DFB Pokal clash against Pirmasens on Saturday, August 16.

“I am healthy, fully fit, and ready to give my all and I am really happy to be here in Mallorca at this training camp. I had no concerns with returning to HSV; this was never an issue for me as I maintained a good relationship with everyone at the club the whole time,” he told HSV media.

“It’s an intense pre-season with friendlies against good opponents which has led to some tired legs at the end of it all. Obviously, we want to win this game against RCD Mallorca and perform as well as we can, however, we will treat this game like the other games we’ve played so far and use it to test out new ideas. It’s crucial that we are ready for our DFB-Pokal match next week,’ he added.

Konigsdorffer is expected to make his Bundesliga debut against Borussia Monchengladbach on August 24, 2025.

Crystal Palace hit out at CAS and UEFA after losing appeal

Crystal Palace beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final to win their first major trophy

Crystal Palace have said “sporting merit is rendered meaningless” after losing their appeal against demotion from the Europa League to the Conference League.

After winning the FA Cup last season, Palace qualified for Europe’s secondary competition but were punished by UEFA for breaching multi-club ownership rules.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) sided with Europe’s governing body on Monday.

In a strongly worded statement, Palace said it was “almost impossible to receive a fair hearing.”

“The decision by UEFA and followed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport shows that sporting merit is rendered meaningless,” Palace said.

“It appears that certain clubs, organisations and individuals have a unique privilege and power.

“This growing and unhealthy influence has shattered the hopes and dreams of Crystal Palace supporters, and does not bode well for aspirational teams all over Europe competing to progress when rules and sanctions are unevenly applied in the most flagrant way.”

Palace added they will “continue to take legal advice on the next steps” as they prepare to compete in the Conference League.

BBC Sport has contacted UEFA for a response.

Nottingham Forest finished seventh in the Premier League last season and have been promoted to the Europa League in Palace’s place.

“Multi-club structures hide behind the charade of a ‘blind trust’ while clubs such as ours, who have no connection to another club whatsoever, are prevented from playing in the same competition,” Palace said.

“To compound the injustice, clubs that appear to have huge informal arrangements with each other are also allowed to participate and even possibly play against each other.”

The Eagles had until 1 March 2025 to show UEFA proof of multi-club ownership restructuring, but missed the deadline.

American businessman John Textor owned a 43% stake in Palace but sold it in June and is the majority owner of Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League.

Cas said that Textor “still had decisive influence over both clubs” at the time of UEFA’s assessment.

The panel also dismissed Palace’s argument that they received unfair treatment in comparison to Nottingham Forest and Lyon.

‘This should be a turning point’

There is precedent for teams being sanctioned by UEFA and for CAS to uphold that decision for breaching multi-club ownership rules.

Irish Premier Division side Drogheda qualified for the 2025-26 Conference League but have been expelled from Europe due to US-based Trivela Group also owning Danish side Silkeborg, who also earned a spot in the competition.

“UEFA’s decision has wider implications for the governance of the sport,” Palace added.

“This should be a turning point for football. UEFA must fulfil its mandate to pass coherent rules which are properly communicated and applied, with reasonable cure periods to resolve uncertainty and consistent sanctions, treating all clubs equally with a proper appeal process.

“The European Court of Justice has made it clear that rulings similar to this will be under greater scrutiny from national courts in future. Only then will fairness and due process be granted to every team.”

Palace will face either Norwegian side Fredrikstad or Midtjylland of Denmark in the Conference League play-off round later this month.

Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo

The Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment has joined the global community in celebrating International Youth Day, highlighting the essential role of young people in shaping Ghana’s future.

This year’s commemoration, held under the global theme, “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond,” and Ghana’s national theme, “Igniting Potential, Inspiring Change,” seeks to inspire, equip, and empower the youth to lead change in health, education, skills development, and civic participation.

In a statement signed by the Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, he commended Ghana’s young people for their “energy, innovation, and determination,” noting that they are not just envisioning the future, but actively building it today.

The month-long celebrations will feature youth-led programmes aimed at improving health and well-being, advancing training and re-skilling for economic empowerment, boosting civic engagements, and enhancing leadership capabilities.

Opare Addo reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment, alongside the private sector, civil society, development partners, and other stakeholders, to invest in platforms and initiatives that empower young Ghanaians to their full potential.

The statement also paid tribute to the young lives lost in recent tragedies, including the military helicopter and road crashes, urging a collective effort to create inclusive opportunities, expand mental health support, and ensure access to quality education.

“Let the youth arise for Ghana, for the nation demands their devotion,” the minister declared.

International Youth Day is observed annually on August 12 to recognise the contributions of young people worldwide in driving social, economic, and technological change.

US sanctions DR Congo armed group over illicit mining, ceasefire tested

0

The US is sanctioning the Pareco-FF armed group, as well as the Congolese mining company CDMC The US is sanctioning the Pareco-FF armed group, as well as the Congolese mining company CDMC

The United States has sanctioned an armed group accused of illicit mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), as both the army and the Rwandan-backed M23 rebel group traded accusations of violating a recently reached US-mediated ceasefire deal by attacking each other’s positions.

The US Department of the Treasury said on Tuesday that it was blocking all interests and restricting transactions with Pareco-FF, an armed group that it said controlled the key coltan mining site of Rubaya from 2022 to 2024, and which has opposed the M23 group.

The administration of President Donald Trump has been pushing for US access to the region’s minerals, as it has done in other parts of the world, including Ukraine.

It also slapped sanctions on the Congolese mining company CDMC, saying it sold minerals that were sourced and smuggled from mines near Rubaya and two Hong Kong-based export companies, East Rise and Star Dragon, which have been accused of buying minerals from the armed group.

“The United States is sending a clear message that no armed group or commercial entity is immune from sanctions if they undermine peace, stability or security in the DRC,” State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said in a statement.

Rubaya is currently under the control of the M23 group, which is already targeted by US sanctions. The mine there produces 15 to 30 percent of the world’s supply of coltan, a mineral used in electronics such as laptops and mobile telephones.

Many Pareco rebels integrated into the DRC military in 2009, but Pareco-FF emerged in 2022 in response to the M23 gains.

The sanctions come as Congolese army spokesman Sylvain Ekenge said in a statement that the M23 group’s “almost daily” attacks constitute an “intentional and manifest violation” of the declaration of principles, which the two parties signed in mid-July in Doha, whose terms include a “permanent ceasefire”.

It followed a separate peace deal between the Congolese and Rwandan governments, signed in Washington, DC, the previous month, which also helped the US government and US companies gain control of critical minerals in the region.

The Congolese army said it was ready to respond “to all provocations from this [M23 group] coalition, accustomed to violating agreements”, the statement said.

M23 spokesman Lawrence Kanyuka said in a post on X on Monday that DRC’s government was continuing “its offensive military manoeuvres aimed at full-scale war”.

The eastern DRC, a region bordering Rwanda with abundant natural resources but plagued by non-state armed groups, has suffered extreme violence for more than three decades.

A new surge of unrest broke out early this year when the M23 group captured the key cities of Goma and Bukavu, setting up their own administrations, with thousands killed in the conflict.

Violence has continued on the ground despite the US and Qatar-brokered peace deal, with fighting becoming more intense since Friday around the town of Mulamba in South Kivu province, where the front line had been relatively stable since March.

The M23 attacked positions between Friday and Monday held by pro-Kinshasa militia and army forces, and pushed them back several kilometres, after clashes using light and heavy weapons, local and security sources said.

The DRC government and the M23 rebels have agreed to sign a permanent peace deal by August 18, but the renewed fighting has threatened this effort.

Stigma, not HIV, is the real killer – Ghana AIDS Commission

0

The Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) has taken a firm stand, reminding the nation that it’s not HIV, but stigma and discrimination, that cause unnecessary deaths among people living with HIV (PLHIV).

Dr Samuel Yao Atidzah, Executive Director of GOSANET Foundation, underscored this sentiment on Zero Discrimination Day. He stated, “Stigma and discrimination hurt, kills faster than the disease itself.”
PLHIV, he explained, often isolate themselves out of fear, shunning testing and treatment opportunities, which jeopardizes both their own lives and public health.

Similarly, in earlier media initiatives led by GAC, Dr Kyeremeh Atuahene described distressing findings from the Ghana Statistical Service.

78% of women and 72% of men with awareness of HIV admitted to harboring discriminatory attitudes, such as refusing to buy produce from someone with HIV or opposing children with HIV attending school with others.

Dr Atuahene lamented that these deep misconceptions fuel dangerous discrimination.

At a training session held for journalists on Zero Discrimination Day, the Director-General reiterated that stigma, more than the illness, poses the greatest threat to PLHIV.

He emphasized the media’s vital role in promoting equality, dispelling myths, and reporting responsibly to prevent prejudice.

The Ghana AIDS Commission is clear: proactive compassion beats fear; testing and treatment beat silence. By dismantling stigma, society paves the way for better health outcomes and full realization of people’s rights.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has reaffirmed its commitment to grassroots football development with significant progress in its Elite Academy project, a flagship initiative designed to nurture young football talent while integrating formal education as a key pillar of player development.

Addressing delegates at the 31st Ordinary Session of Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku highlighted the steady growth of the programme and its role in building a structured, nationwide talent pipeline.

“The Elite Academy project continues to record steady growth, with sustained investment focused on nurturing young football talents while integrating formal education as a core component of development,” Okraku noted.

The Bolgatanga Academy in the Northern Belt remains the flagship of the initiative, standing out as the only academy with a fully integrated male and female programme. It has now enrolled its second cohort, comprising 22 boys and 12 girls, joining the first-generation group of 27 boys and 15 girls currently in SHS 2.

In the Middle Belt, the Prempeh College Academy is now fully operational, accommodating 22 boys who have begun both technical training and academic studies in line with the national Elite Academy curriculum.

Preparations for the Southern Sector Academy in partnership with Achimota School are at an advanced stage, with the first intake of students scheduled for this year. This milestone will complete the Academy’s three-sector regional structure, ensuring balanced talent development across the country.

The GFA’s Elite Academy model is designed not only to develop football skills but also to instill discipline, provide quality education and create a strong foundation for both football and life beyond the game.

Spurs leave out Bissouma for persistent lateness

0

Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma has been left out of the squad to face Paris St-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup because of persistent lateness.

Spurs have travelled to the Italian city of Udine for Wednesday night’s match against Luis Enrique’s men.

Manager Thomas Frank said, “Bissouma isn’t here because of disciplinary reasons. He has been late several times, the latest one too many.

“We need to give love and have demands, but there have to be consequences. There’s been a consequence, we will follow it up when we get home and park it for now.”

On the game versus PSG, Frank added: “I am a big believer of principles and structures in the team, offensively and defensively.

“I want to have a clear structure in phases one and two when we are building up. We want to control the game, and in phase three, we want to score.

“For the club, me and everyone involved at Tottenham, it’s a massive game. It’s a great challenge and an even bigger opportunity.

“The way my brain works, I see opportunities instead of pressure. We will definitely embrace it and give it everything.”

GFA delivers support to Division One League Clubs

0

The Ghana Football Association (GFA), has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the growth and sustainability of the Access Bank Division One League (DOL) by delivering a package of financial and logistical support to all 48 participating clubs.

This investment builds on a consistent six-year track record of strategic interventions since the current administration took office, reflecting the GFA’s vision to strengthen the league’s competitiveness, operational stability and long-term viability.

Over the years, the GFA has enhanced the appeal of the Division One League through targeted initiatives that address the operational needs of clubs.

For the upcoming season, the Association will sustain, and in some cases, expand the comprehensive support provided last year.

This includes the full absorption of referees’ fees for all 48 clubs, valued at GH¢2,520,000; the provision of 30 pairs of football boots per club, worth a total of GH¢5,077,000; and the supply of 30 footballs per club, amounting to GH¢792,000.

Additional measures include the Bus Acquisition Strategy to improve team transportation, continued partnership support from Melcom Ghana, and the Goil fuel support initiative to reduce travel costs.

Notably, the cash incentive per club has been increased from GH¢80,000 to at least GH¢120,000 for the new season.

The GFA’s investment aims to professionalize club operations, reduce administrative burdens and improve matchday standards.

By absorbing key costs and providing critical equipment, the Association empowers clubs to focus on performance and youth development.

President Simeon-Okraku emphasized that these interventions are part of a broader strategy to raise the standard of Ghanaian football at all levels:

“Our vision is to build a strong, competitive and sustainable Division One League that produces top talent, excites fans, and contributes to the national game. The consistent investment over the past six years demonstrates our commitment to making this vision a reality.”

The Access Bank Division One League remains a vital breeding ground for talent and a crucial pathway to the elite Ghana Premier League.

With enhanced financial stability, improved infrastructure, and sustained institutional support, the GFA is positioning the DOL as a dynamic, competitive and commercially attractive product within the Ghanaian football ecosystem.

Vice president of Ghana urges African leaders to prioritise the interests of their people

Vice President Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has opened the African Political Parties Summit 2025 in Accra, calling on political parties across the continent to prioritise the needs of their citizens at all times while in power.

Addressing delegates, Prof Opoku-Agyemang stressed that the public expects leaders “not to focus on the next elections, but the next generation,” emphasising the need for essential services such as water, electricity, and jobs.

She urged African political parties not to view each other as enemies, noting that the true measure of democracy lies in holding peaceful elections and enabling political rivals to work together for national development.

“Democracy must be adversarial in the market of ideas,” she said.

According to the Vice President, the summit will discuss critical issues, including how ruling parties can ensure peaceful elections in fragile situations.

“…We will not agree on everything, but if we can agree on the fundamental that Africa’s peace is non-negotiable, then we would have taken a major step forward,” she remarked.

The summit is being held under the theme “From Politics to Prosperity: Strengthening Inter-Party Collaboration for Africa’s Development and Economic Transformation.”

Notable participants include NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey, who stated that “leadership is not about preventing others from having power, but about supporting the government to deliver on its mandate,” as well as South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Special Envoy Jeff Radebe, Benedicta Lasi, Chair of the Executive Council of the Africa Governance Centre, and representatives from Latin America, including Mexico.

Leader of The New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, has called for national unity and renewed commitment to service following the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and seven others.

Speaking during a condolence visit to the late minister’s family home in Accra on August 12, 2025, Bediako described the incident as a “Black Wednesday” and expressed sorrow over the loss, highlighting the sacrifices made by those who serve the nation.

“It was a Black Wednesday on the 6th of August. I prayed to God that this should not repeat itself in this country,” he said.

“For eight people to have lost their lives while serving their nation I don’t know what we can say to bring these spirits back.”

He urged Ghanaians not to let the tragedy derail national progress, but to continue building on the vision and mission of those who died in service.

“They’ve become the heroes of my lifetime. Not only am I proud of them, but they’ve inspired me. We should not stop serving our country,” he stated.

Responding to calls for an overhaul of the military’s aircraft fleet, Bediako acknowledged safety concerns but cautioned against focusing solely on equipment.

“The human is more important than the machines. Accidents happen whether it’s a new or old machine, tragedy can still strike,” he noted.

“Right now, as a nation, we’re mourning. We should take the death of these heroes very seriously and let it inspire us.”

He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the government and President John Mahama.

“I wish all the families God’s strength, wisdom, and courage. And to the government, I urge you to stay strong so this nation can remain strong. Let’s continue their work,” he said.

The crash, one of Ghana’s deadliest air disasters in recent years, has reignited national conversations around military preparedness and equipment safety as the country enters a period of mourning and reflection.

CIB Ghana leads national dialogue on monetary policy, banking reforms

Benjamin Amenumey is the president of CIB Benjamin Amenumey is the president of CIB

The Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana (CIB Ghana) has convened a high-level policy seminar to examine the practical implications of monetary policy decisions on lending, inflation, and financial sector development.

It is under the theme “Monetary Policy in Action: How MPC Decisions Shape Ghana’s Economy and Financial Sector,”

In his welcome address, Benjamin Amenumey, President of CIB Ghana, reaffirmed the Institute’s commitment to advancing professional discourse on national economic policy.

“Our mandate requires that we promote ethical and professional conduct while advancing the development of the banking profession. Fostering dialogue on monetary policy is a national duty,” he stated.

Robert Dzato, Chief Executive Officer of CIB Ghana, shared key findings from a recent study conducted by the Institute.

The research, which surveyed senior banking executives and other officials, revealed widespread stakeholder alignment with the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) recent policy stance.

“Over 85 per cent of respondents had anticipated the latest rate cut. Stakeholders are looking for greater alignment between monetary policy actions and economic growth. We also heard concerns about liquidity constraints, credit risk, and volatility in funding costs,” he added.

The event’s keynote address was delivered by Dr Johnson Asiama, Governor of the BoG, who described the current disinflation process as “real, sustained, and progressive,” supported by coordinated, data-driven measures between the central bank and the Ministry of Finance.

Inflation fell from 25.8 per cent in March to 13.7 per cent in June 2025, while the Ghana Reference Rate (GRR) declined from 32.5 per cent in January to 27.7 per cent in July.

Dr Asiama cited the cedi’s appreciation, over 40 per cent year-to-date, as a key factor in lowering imported inflation and improving purchasing power.

He cautioned, however, that banks must prepare for the evolving financial landscape saying “Banks have to start assessing themselves, especially their credit infrastructure. We will soon come out with a notice on credit risk for banks, and it is all in line with what we see coming.”

A panel discussion followed, featuring insights from key industry stakeholders.

Professor Festus Ebo Turkson, an external member of the MPC, explained the decision-making framework behind the recent rate cut. “It is data driven. Every decision we make reflects a rigorous review of economic conditions and risks,” he stated.

Dr Humphrey Ayim Dake, President of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), expressed support for the changing interest rate environment. “We welcome the imminent low interest rate regime and expect to see more banking—that is, credit flowing into real businesses,” he said.

Joseph Obeng, President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), noted that declining prices of imported goods are already evident due to the cedis appreciation against major trading currencies, especially the US dollar. “If the cedi holds steady, prices will continue to come down across the board,” he said.

Ellen Ohene-Afoakwa, Managing Principal for Corporate and Investment Banking at Absa Bank, observed that banks are ready to lend but require better-prepared businesses. “Banks are willing to lend, but businesses must be in good shape to receive credit. Sound governance, financial discipline, and transparency matter,” she said.

The seminar affirmed the importance of inclusive, transparent dialogue in shaping policy and enhancing financial sector performance.

Prophet Fire Oja draws criticism for seeking state support to share prophecies

Prophet Fire Oja, founder of the Holiness of Christ Zion Ministry, has faced criticism online after saying the government should provide car and fuel money to prophets who are required to submit their prophecies for review.

In an interview shared on social media, the preacher said not all prophets can afford to travel to the Jubilee House to present their spiritual revelations.

According to him, if the state wants such prophecies delivered, it should cover transportation costs.

‘Give us car and fuel money first’ – Prophet Fire Oja replies government over prophecy scrutiny

“If the government says we should come to the Jubilee House with our prophecies, they should also give us car money and fuel. Not all of us can afford to travel there. If they want to hear it in person, they should take care of our transport,” he said.

His comments came after the Office of the Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations issued a directive for religious leaders to formally submit any prophecy or spiritual insight of national importance for review.

However, many Ghanaians online believe Prophet Fire Oja’s statement is an indirect rejection of the new policy.

A Plus reacts to Prophet Roja’s doom prophecy about him

One user argued that no prophet should demand anything in return for sharing a message from God, writing, “People have been swayed and are being led by blind men. There’s no prophet who must demand something in return for the message or revelations from God. Learn from the prophets of the Bible. Remember that Paul said the carnal or materialistic man is bound?”

Another commenter described the preacher as a con man hiding behind religion, saying, “You don’t need a soothsayer to tell you the modus operandi of these conmen disguised as prophets. In their minds, a plethora of Ghanaians are impressionable, especially when the discourse revolves around religion, spirituality, divination, and so forth. In the end, they win.”

A netizen also accused him of looking for a way to take money from the state, writing, “He just wants to cash out. They predict something that is likely to happen in some form and exploit the system.”

Canal+ is willing to talk to us to resolve Multichoice’s DSTV subscription rates impasse – Sam George

0

Media conglomerate Vivendi’s Canal+ which, currently owns over a third of MultiChoice, Africa’s largest pay TV operator, DSTV – and has just obtained anti-trust approval for the complete takeover which is expected to be finalised by October is willing to talk to the regulator in Ghana to resolve the current impasse between Multichoice Ghana and the Ghana government over subscription rates, sector Minister Samuel Nartey George has said.

In a radio interview with Joy FM on Tuesday, monitored by Graphic Online, Mr Sam George, the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, said Canal+’s attitude towards the issues raised about Multichoice Ghana’s subscription fees was more positive.

They are aware of the situation going on here [in Ghana], and I have made it clear to them. They have reached out [to me] and I have made it clear to them, if they want to come into Ghana and operate on the license that the company that they are buying has, this is our request…, they’ve made certain indications and I said to them I want it in writing,” Mr George said.

He said Canal+ has gotten the all clear from the commission in South Africa, and “I believe that should kick in from sometime from September and so Canal + are the ones taking over.

“I don’t want to take public policy decisions on the basis of phone calls that have been made to me. “[I’ve asked them to] put it in an official letter. Canal + is willing to talk to us, I will not run from the fact that Canal+’s attitude is more positive than that of Multichoice,” Mr Sam George said.

Related articles:

Canal+ is buying out MultiChoice and the processes are expected to be completed by October 2025.

But before that is completed Ghana’s communication regulator, the National Communications Authority (NCA), has ordered the shutdown of MultiChoice Ghana, that operates DSTV’s pay-TV in 30 days by September 8, 2025, due to the streamer’s refusal to cut its subscription rate by 30%.

Like other countries in West Africa, Ghana, through the sector minister, Sam George, recently raised issues about the steep increase in subscription charges for the DSTV pay-TV services which Multichoice Ghana said was partly caused by rampant inflation rates and weak currency.

Over the past two years, MultiChoice has drastically raised fees for its traditional satellite pay-TV business in several African countries, such as Nigeria and Kenya, as well as Zambia, Ghana, Uganda and Namibia, among others.

In Ghana, the pay-TV group increased the subscription fees by 15% in April with little notice, prompting the communications minister, Sam George, to give MultiChoice an ultimatum to lower its rate by 30% by August 7.

MultiChoice didn’t oblige and instead offered to maintain rates at existing levels, which has been rejected by the regulator.

The NCA has consequently told MultiChoice Ghana that it has 30 days to “present its views, or provide remedial action, and submit a written statement of its objections to the suspension of the authorization”.

It is following this that the sector minister, in the radio interview monitored by Graphic Online on Tuesday said Canal+, which is taking over from Multichoice in Africa, when the deal goes through by October, has reached out and showed a positive attitude to resolve the impasse.

Meanwhile, Mr Sam George has said Multichoice Ghana was not interested in dealing with cross-border piracy issues in Ghana on its platform.

There is a lot of cross-border piracy of DSTV devices [decoders and dishes] from Nigeria working in Ghana, where Multichoice Ghana has no control over.

According to Mr Sam George, he has engaged Multichoice Ghana for them to deal with that cross-border piracy but Multichoice Ghana was not interested in dealing with all critical issues, including the cross-border piracy on their platform.

He said they have told him, there was nothing they can do about it.

Mr George said for instance Starlink is an international company, and “we had instances where people were bringing Starlink devices from other African countries into Ghana to operate. We called Starlink and said we won’t allow that to happen.”

“Because you see, there are revenue lines as well for the state on devices that are located in the country. So if you bring a device from outside the country and it is working, it means that it is blind to the Ghanaian state.”

“I said to DSTV deal with cross border piracy and they tell me, well this is not something they can do anything about.”

Efia Odo defends Stonebwoy amid recent wave of online trolls

Popular socialite, Efia Odo, has strongly defended Stonebwoy against some recent attacks by some social media trolls.

The trolls have been witnessed online after some observations were made during his performance at Davido and Chioma’s wedding ceremony held in Miami on August 10, 2025.

During his performance, Stonebwoy was captured in a viral social media video picking up his bracelet that dropped on the floor.

Some netizens, after spotting this, have since had the wrong impression.

They have accused the “Jejereje” hitmaker of bending down to pick up some of the dollar bills that were sprayed on the floor.

However, in reaction to this, Efia Odo shared a post on social media on August 12, 2025, informing netizens that the musician was rather picking a bracelet that had fallen from his wrist while performing.

She explained that the dancehall musician had no motive for picking up money sprayed on the couples during the ceremony.

“He literally picked up his bracelet that came off his wrist! Bibini dierr,” she explained.

I have never been an NDC member – Kojo Choi – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Ghana’s Ambassador-Designate to South Korea, Kojo Choi, has dismissed perceptions that he is politically aligned with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following his appointment by John Dramani Mahama.

According to him, his professional engagements and relationships cut across political divides and that his appointment was based on competence.

Speaking in an interview with Umaru Sanda on Face to Face on Tuesday, August 12, Mr. Choi stated that while he knows many individuals in political circles, his work and public activities have never been politically motivated.

“I have never been political. I know a lot of people in the NPP. For example, our company PaySwitch was launched by Dr. Bawumia, who came because he is very interested in digitalisation, not for political reasons.

“The company is one I co-founded with my partner, and people assumed there was a political connection, but there wasn’t,” he explained.

He also recounted how former First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo attended the opening of his art gallery, noting that her presence was driven by her love for art and her interest in supporting his vision to promote emerging artists rather than established ones.

Mr. Choi emphasised that his friendships span both major political parties, including the NPP and NDC, and maintained that he has “never lobbied or sponsored” political causes. “I have always been a quiet entrepreneur,” he added.

African Leaders Demand Inclusive Governance at Continental Summit

Political representatives from over 30 countries convened in Accra this week for the African Political Parties Summit, issuing a unified call for transformative inclusion in governance.

The three-day gathering, which opened Tuesday, focused on redefining political parties to drive regional integration and equitable development.

South Africa’s Special Envoy Jeff Radebe delivered a blistering critique of current leadership during his keynote address: “Citizens don’t eat manifestos or build futures on broken promises,” he stated.

“They’re tired of leaders preaching unity while sowing division, and policies that consume resources yet yield no change.” His remarks drew sustained applause from delegates grappling with democratic challenges across the continent.

The summit gained international backing when Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, President of Latin America’s COPPPAL alliance, endorsed Ghanaian President John Mahama’s initiative for political renewal.

“This marks Africa’s inflection point toward integration,” Cárdenas declared, urging concrete actions: “We must promote youth and women’s participation—governance modernization hinges on inclusive decision-making.”

Ghana’s Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang grounded the discussions in tangible outcomes: “Our people demand food security, decent jobs, and justice—not politics for its own sake,” she emphasized, challenging leaders to prioritize “the next generation over the next election.” Her call resonated as regional heavyweights witnessed ICAPP and COPPPAL signing a cooperation pact to strengthen democratic safeguards globally.

Kwasi Appiah shows class as Sudan belabors Nigeria 4-0 and send Super Eagles out of CHAN 2024

0

Sudan produced the shock of CHAN PAMOJA 2024 so far, dismantling higher-ranked Nigeria 4–0 in Zanzibar to go top of Group D and, in the process, knock the Super Eagles out of the tournament with a game to spare.

Abdel Raouf Yagoub struck twice after the break to add to an early Leonard Ngenge own goal and Walieldin Khdir’s penalty, capping a ruthless, disciplined display that left Nigeria bottom with zero points from two matches.

The result arrives on a day when title holders Senegal were held 1–1 by Congo, leaving the standings finely poised for the final round: Sudan and Senegal on four points apiece, Congo on two, and Nigeria out of contention.

With only four teams in Group D, the Super Eagles can now reach a maximum of three points — not enough to finish in the top two.

Nigeria began with urgency and plenty of set-piece pressure. Corners on eight and nine minutes asked early questions of Mohamed Abooja’s handling, while Raymond Tochukwu sliced wide from distance (11’).

Sudan, coached by Ghanaian Kwesi Appiah, absorbed the punches and then struck with the evening’s first big twist.

On 22 minutes, Anthony Ijoma thought he had put Nigeria ahead after stealing in behind, only for VAR to rule the effort out for offside. Three minutes later Sudan punished the reprieve with a freakish opener: Yagoub’s shot cannoned off the post and ricocheted in off the unfortunate Ngenge (25’).

A blow became a body-shot just before the break when Ngenge’s miserable few minutes continued — a handball in the box (43’) — allowing captain Walieldin Khdir to crash home the penalty into the top-right corner (44’).

Nigeria still had a sniff before half-time when Sikiru Alimi went close twice, glancing wide from a cross (39’) and prodding past the post in stoppage time (45+4’), but the Super Eagles trudged in two down.

Eric Chelle rolled the dice at the interval with a triple change — Steven Manyo, Jabbar Malik and Vincent Temitope on — in search of a response. Instead, Sudan tightened their grip. Tochukwu’s free-kick flew over (52’) and, almost immediately, the Falcons of Jediane pounced again.

Musa Hussien’s persistence created chaos and Yagoub, outstanding all evening between the lines, arrived to steer a left-footed finish into the bottom-right corner (55’). Seven minutes later he iced the contest, sweeping in a fourth from the centre of the area to the top-left (62’) after Sudan pinched possession and broke with clarity and conviction.

From there, Appiah’s side managed the game with a cool head. Sudan’s midfield trio snapped into duels and recycled the ball smartly, while full-backs Ahmed Tabanja and Mazin Simbo picked their moments to progress or, more often, to stay compact. When Nigeria did engineer sights of goal, Abooja stood firm — notably clutching Manyo’s late header (84’). Tochukwu rattled the post from range (90’), summing up Nigeria’s night: speculative, hurried, and ultimately fruitless.

What will delight Appiah most is how closely Sudan’s performance mirrored his pre-match blueprint. They were disciplined without the ball, fast in transition and ruthless in the box. Khdir knitted play and led the press; Yaser Awad stretched the pitch on the right; Ali Abdalla and Hussien worked tirelessly.

Even the bench kept the standard: late introductions Mohamed Tia Asad, Al-Misbah Faisal and Awad Zayed helped see out the game with minimal fuss.

For Nigeria, the statistics and the storyline are stark. Two matches, no goals, five conceded. The disallowed goal at 22 minutes changed nothing about a defensive display that never recovered from Ngenge’s double calamity before half-time.

Chelle’s side created half-chances, but lacked precision in crossing and composure in front of goal; when the press was bypassed, they were repeatedly exposed down the flanks. Bookings for Ahmed Tabanja (50’) and Shola Adelani (81’) reflected a contest growing increasingly stretched — but only one team looked likely to score again.

Unknown armed men allegedly abduct Wontumi TV presenter – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Unidentified armed men on Tuesday, August 12, reportedly abducted Wontumi TV presenter Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare in Ejisu Krapa, Ashanti Region, in what eyewitnesses described as a dramatic operation.

According to witnesses, the assailants arrived in unmarked vehicles, fired warning shots, and forcibly took the journalist away without disclosing their identities or intentions. They then sped off from the scene.

The motive for the abduction remains unknown, and details about the presenter’s whereabouts are yet to be confirmed.

Kwame Adom Appiah, one of the lawyers for Wontumi Multimedia, confirmed that the presenter was picked up by unknown men.

In an interview with Citi News’ Beverlyn Longdon, the lawyer said, “We were told by the two persons who were around, we were told that gunshots were fired when Akyemkwaa started running away from the people. His effort to run away from them was for his safety.

“The information we just picked from the men who were around was that those who came were hooded. They could not identify them by face. They chased him and forcibly put him in their waiting pickup. As to where he is now, we have not been able to trace him, so we’re lodging a formal complaint to the police.”

This follows an apology by Wontumi TV, owned by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, to President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the public over comments made by the presenter linking the President to the recent tragic military helicopter crash.

The presenter alleged that the President had a hand in the tragic crash.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 12, the station’s management said the remarks by presenter Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare on Saturday, August 9, 2025, were “inappropriate, unfounded, and contrary to our values of professionalism, accuracy, and fairness in broadcasting.”

Ghana TV Station Apologizes for False Claims Linking Mahama to Military Crash

Tragic Helicopter Crash
Tragic Helicopter Crash

Wontumi TV has issued a sweeping apology to President John Mahama, his National Democratic Congress party, and the public after one of its presenters baselessly implicated the former president in last week’s fatal military helicopter crash.

The incident claimed eight lives and has plunged Ghana into mourning.

During an August 9 broadcast, presenter Akyenkwa Nana Kofi Asare alleged Mahama’s involvement in the tragedy—claims the station now calls “inappropriate, unfounded, and contrary to our values of professionalism and fairness.” Management emphasized the remarks “did not represent Wontumi TV’s views or policies” in a signed statement, expressing deep regret for the distress caused.

The Accra-based outlet confirmed disciplinary action against Asare and tightened editorial controls to enforce fact-based reporting. “All on-air staff must speak only to verified facts,” the statement read, reaffirming commitments to ethical journalism. The broadcaster separately extended condolences to bereaved families, urging national unity during the period of grief.

This swift damage control follows intense public backlash over the inflammatory segment. As Ghana processes the military tragedy, the incident raises tough questions: How can media balance scrutiny with responsibility when covering national crises? For now, Wontumi TV hopes its contrition turns the page.

Air Force pays tribute to Defence Minister, three officers – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

The Ghana Air Force has held a solemn memorial ceremony to honour three of its personnel and Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, who tragically lost their lives in the August 6 helicopter crash.

The ceremony took place on Tuesday, August 12, at the Air Force Base in Accra, where the ill-fated helicopter had departed.

It was an evening marked by music, heartfelt tributes, and words of encouragement, as service members, bereaved families, and members of the public gathered to pay their respects.

The fallen Air Force crew, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, died alongside the Defence Minister and four high-ranking government officials while en route to the launch of the government’s Cooperative Mining Initiative in Obuasi.

Other government officials who perished in the crash were Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and Deputy NADMO Director-General and former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye.

The vigil served as a poignant reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by the fallen heroes, with attendees expressing deep gratitude for their service and commitment to the nation.

Ghana Narcotics Agency Nabs Key Suspect in Major Airport Drug Bust

Ghana’s Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has apprehended Lincoln Nii Okaija, the prime suspect behind a foiled attempt to smuggle 738 parcels of suspected cannabis through Kotoka International Airport.

Okaija was arrested at the Aflao border while fleeing to Togo en route to France, ending a days-long manhunt.

Authorities confirmed Okaija played a central role in the smuggling operation intercepted at Swissport cargo facilities. He now faces prosecution under Ghana’s strict narcotics laws. NACOC publicly thanked collaborators in a statement, emphasizing ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking.

Separate Gold Bust

In a related crackdown, NACOC last month handed over 17 smuggled gold bars worth $1.7 million to the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod). The bars were seized at the Paga Border Post from two Burkinabe nationals attempting illegal export. Both face charges for unlawful gold transportation.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak pledged continued state support for GoldBod’s resource protection efforts. GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi praised NACOC’s vigilance, urging deeper inter-agency collaboration to secure Ghana’s mineral wealth.

The handover ceremony united senior officials from NACOC, GoldBod, and the Interior Ministry, signaling strengthened resolve against transnational smuggling networks. As Ghana tightens border security, one question lingers: How many more high-value interdictions lie ahead?

Daddy Lumba’s one-week observation to be held at Legon Sports Stadium on August 30

The life and legacy of Ghanaian highlife musician Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, will be honoured with a one-week observation at the University of Ghana (Legon) Sports Stadium on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

This was confirmed in a post by DL FM.

Earlier, the Ekuona Royal Family of Nsuta, to which the late music legend belonged, made the announcement through their family head, the Abusuapanyin, during a press briefing that the event in Accra will give fans and sympathizers from across the country an opportunity to pay their respects before the final funeral rites in Kumasi.

The decision on the venues, the family revealed, was made after a formal visit to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to inform him of the passing of his “royal son.”

“When we officially informed the Asantehene of the passing of Daddy Lumba, he reminded us that Daddy Lumba is a royal,” the Abusuapanyin said.

Kwadwo Baah’s late strike not enough as Watford fall to Norwich in EFL Cup

Ghanaian forward Kwadwo Baah scored for Watford in their defeat to Norwich City Ghanaian forward Kwadwo Baah scored for Watford in their defeat to Norwich City

Watford’s EFL Cup journey ended early as they fell 2-1 to Norwich City at Vicarage Road, despite a lively cameo from Ghanaian forward Kwadwo Baah.

The visitors started brightly, taking the lead in the 10th minute when Josh Sargent slotted home from close range. Marcelino Núñez doubled the advantage 14 minutes later with a stunning strike from distance, leaving the hosts chasing the game before half-time.

Baah entered the game in the 62nd minute, replacing Thomas Ince, and quickly became a spark for the Hornets. His persistence paid off in the 68th minute when he latched onto Imrân Louza’s pass and coolly finished with his left foot.

The 22-year-old was a constant problem for Norwich’s defence, drawing three fouls, the most by any player on the pitch.

Watford pushed hard in the closing stages but couldn’t find an equaliser, with the Canaries holding firm to advance.

The result leaves Watford with 10 wins, eight losses, and one draw in their head-to-head history with Norwich. Attention now turns to Friday’s Championship clash against QPR.

Kenya court says British tycoon’s body too decomposed to determine cause of death

0

The magistrate, David Odhiambo, said the body should now be returned to the family The magistrate, David Odhiambo, said the body should now be returned to the family

A Kenyan magistrate says the cause of death of British tycoon Harry Roy Veevers, whose exhumed body has been in a morgue for 11 years, cannot be determined.

David Odhiambo ordered the inquest to be closed, saying that “due to the level of [the body’s] decomposition at the time of exhumation – months after his burial” it was too hard to say what led to his death and “nobody can be called to answer any charge”.

Veevers died on Valentine’s Day 2013 in the coastal city of Mombasa. He was buried in accordance with Islamic rites and without a post-mortem.

It led to a lengthy legal battle, with his two sons from a previous marriage calling for an investigation into how their father had died.

The sons, Richard and Philip Veevers, who were living in the UK, accused their father’s second wife, Azra Parveen Din, and her daughters, Helen and Alexandra, of being involved in his death, allegedly so that they could inherit his multi-million dollar estate. They have vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

On Tuesday, Odhiambo ruled that because of the state of the the body and “the conflicting reports by the pathologists, government chemist and other experts” no charges could be made.

“The investigations relating to the death of the deceased are hereby considered closed unless and until new information comes to light,” he added.

The magistrate said that Mr Veever’s body should be released from the morgue in Mombasa upon payment of the fee that had accumulated for the last 11 years.

But it is unclear who the body will be handed over to as Mr Odhiambo said he could not make that decision and instructed both families to seek direction from a different court.

At the time of Veever’s death in 2013, his second wife, who was living with him in Mombasa, said that her husband had died of natural causes.

But his Islamic burial, done quickly after his death, raised suspicions from his sons, who said their father was not Muslim and had been buried under a false name. They also alleged that their father may have been poisoned.

In January last year, a magistrates’ court ruled that his death was not suspicious.

However, his sons successfully challenged that ruling and petitioned the High Court to reopen the inquest and allow them to submit new evidence.

The High Court referred the case back to a magistrates’ court, citing irregular procedures leading to the initial ruling.

Tests conducted after the exhumation revealed traces of a pesticide, although pathologists differed on whether this could have been the cause of his death.

Tuesday’s ruling mentioned the post-mortem findings that found traces of a poisonous substance on both the remains and soil where his body was exhumed.

But it also cited the “conflicting findings by pathologists, government chemist and other experts”, as a reason why the cause of death “remains unknown”.

I am fully Ghanaian – Kojo Choi – Citinewsroom – Comprehensive News in Ghana

0

Ghana’s Ambassador-Designate to South Korea, Kojo Choi, has stressed that he is a full Ghanaian citizen, holding only a Ghanaian passport with no dual nationality.

Speaking in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Tuesday, August 12, Mr. Choi revealed that although he was born to Korean parents, he moved to Ghana at the age of 14 and was naturalised as a Ghanaian in 1999.

He attended SOS Hermann Gmeiner International School in Tema and later pursued his university education at the University of Ghana.

Mr. Choi’s appointment by President John Dramani Mahama stirred controversy, with some Ghanaians questioning why someone of Korean descent was chosen to represent Ghana in South Korea. However, he defended his selection, stressing that he has spent most of his life in Ghana and voluntarily acquired Ghanaian citizenship.

Fluent in Twi and with an understanding of Frafra, Mr. Choi said he was unfazed by the criticism.
“I consider myself Ghanaian. This is my home,” he affirmed.

The businessman also dismissed suggestions that he is aligned with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“I have never been political. I know a lot of people in the NPP. For example, our company PaySwitch was launched by Dr. Bawumia because he is very interested in digitalisation—not for political reasons,” he explained.

Mr. Choi, who co-founded PaySwitch, clarified that the venture was a business initiative and not politically motivated.

He further recounted how former First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo attended the launch of his art gallery, explaining that her presence was due to her passion for art and her interest in supporting emerging artists, not because of political ties.

Emphasising that his personal and professional relationships span both major political parties, Mr. Choi said he has “never lobbied or sponsored” any political cause.

“I have always been a quiet entrepreneur,” he concluded.
