Accra, Aug. 12, GNA – Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called on African political parties to focus on delivering prosperity rather than merely seeking political power.
Addressing the inaugural African Political Parties Summit in Accra, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said politics that did not pursue the wellbeing of citizens “is empty,” and urged parties to prioritise national interest and long-term development.
“Our people do not ask us to perform politics for their own sake. They deserve politics that translates into food security, decent jobs, functional schools, accessible healthcare, efficient infrastructure, security and justice,” she stated.
“They expect us to focus not just on the next election but more importantly on the next generation,” she added.
The three-day summit is being held under the theme “From Politics to Prosperity: Strengthening Inter-Party Collaboration for Africa’s Development and Economic Transformation.”
It brought together over 160 delegates from across Africa, and served as a platform for dialogue, consensus-building, and inter-party cooperation aimed at strengthening democratic governance and catalysing economic transformation.
A 2024 Afrobarometer Report revealed that 66 per cent of Africans preferred democracy, with majorities rejecting one-man rule (80%), one-party rule (78%), and military rule (66%).
However, 53 per cent were willing to accept military intervention if elected leaders abused power, and support for elections declined by eight per cent across 30 countries.
Mr Jeff Radebe, Special Envoy of the President of South Africa, expressed concern over declining trust in political parties, stating: “If our politics does not lead to prosperity, then it is nothing more than destruction.”
He emphasised that national strength depended on governance quality rather than resource abundance, and criticised the prioritisation of personal and party ambitions.
“The citizens of Africa that we serve do not need manifestos. They cannot build their futures on political promises that dissolve after elections,” Mr Radebe said.
Mr Fifi Kwetey, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, noted growing disillusionment among African youth and called for structural reforms within political parties.
He said Africa’s capacity “is far enormous than our challenges” and urged participants to explore ways of using political parties to fulfil public aspirations.
The summit will also witness the adoption of the implementation framework of the African Political Parties Initiative (APPI), a flagship platform for sustained inter-party engagement and capacity development

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has warned that fuel stations operating without the legally required license risks immediate closure and possible decommissioning.
In a statement, the NPA underscored its legal mandate under the National Petroleum Authority Act, 2005 (Act 691), as amended, to regulate all commercial activities involving the storage, distribution and sale of petroleum products.
The is to curb illicit operations and reinforce regulatory compliance in the downstream petroleum industry.
“Reference is made to Section 11 of the National Petroleum Authority Act, 2005 (Act 691) as amended. (1) A person shall NOT engage in a business or commercial activity in the petroleum downstream industry UNLESS that person has been granted a license for that purpose by the (NPA) Board. (2) The business or commercial activities of the downstream industry in respect of crude oil, gasoline, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas, kerosene and other designated petroleum products include (a) Importation; (b) Exportation; (c) Re-exportation; (d) Shipment; (e) Transportation; (f)Processing: (g) Refining (h) Storage; (i) Distribution; (j) Marketing, and (k) Sale,” part of the statement read.
The NPA also indicated that under the Act, only Ghanaians or foreign companies in registered joint ventures with Ghanaian partners meeting local content and participation requirements are eligible for licenses.
Licensed operators are also required to display their permits prominently at their business premises.
“Section 12 of Act 691 as amended states that “A license under this Act may only be granted to (a) a Ghanaian, or (b) a foreign company in a registered joint venture relationship with a Ghanaian in accordance with the Ghanaian content and Ghanaian participation requirements. The Act also states that a license issued under this Act shall be conspicuously exhibited by the licensee in a prominent place on the business premises,” the statement added.
The enforcement is crucial for ensuring safety, consumer protection, and maintaining confidence in Ghana’s regulated petroleum supply chain, especially at a time of rising energy demand and market expansion.

International Aircraft Services helicopter which made the emergency landing
Residents of Adwafo in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region experienced a high level of nervousness on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, when a helicopter made an emergency landing in the community.
The anxiety of the people stemmed from the recent unfortunate development that befell the same district when the Z9 helicopter, which belonged to the Ghana Armed Forces, crashed near the Adansi Brofoyedu forest.

The aircraft, which made the emergency landing, reportedly bore the name International Aircraft Services, with registration number AS 365N3.
According to the District Chief Executive for Adansi Akrofuom, Gariba Mohammed Musatpha, he received a call that there had been an emergency landing of a helicopter in the town.
“What prompted me to come was the recent incident that happened the other day, and the town is close to us, with investigations still ongoing. Upon my arrival, I spoke to the aircrew, and they told me that they were on their way to Chirano Mines. However, due to bad weather conditions, they had to make an emergency landing here,” myjoyonline.com reported him as saying.
Chirano is a mining community in the Bibiani Ahweso Bekai Municipality in the Western North.
However, some residents who had the last helicopter crash at the back of their minds claimed they were terrified when the aircraft started hovering in the sky, as it brought them memories of the tragic crash.
Some claimed that they started shouting out loud, while others mentioned that they nearly wanted to run away, but they had nowhere to go as they were gripped with fear.
Myjoyonline reported a resident as saying, “We were gripped with fear this morning. I saw the aircraft turning around, and I began to shout, ‘God, have mercy on us.’
“Then the aircraft started coming down, and we feared it would crash like the previous one did. My mother is blind — I wanted to run and leave her behind because of the incident. But just as I was about to leave, we saw it landing safely.”

A management member of Wontumi Radio in Accra, Gordon Asare Bediako, has dismissed claims that Wontumi Multimedia issued an official apology to President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the public over remarks linking the President to the recent military helicopter crash.
The denial follows the circulation of a statement purportedly from Wontumi TV — owned by Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi — apologising for comments made by one of its presenters, Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare, on Saturday, August 9, 2025.
The presenter had alleged that President Mahama was involved in the tragic crash. The purported statement described the claims as “inappropriate, unfounded, and contrary to the values of professionalism, accuracy, and fairness in broadcasting.”
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday, August 12, Mr. Asare Bediako stressed that management never issued such an apology, suggesting the statement originated from unauthorised online accounts amid heightened tensions between Wontumi Multimedia and the National Communications Authority (NCA) over the suspension of three of its radio stations, including Wontumi Radio Accra.
“That came to us in Accra as a surprise. When we checked with Kumasi, we were told that there was nothing like that official apology or retraction or whatever. In fact, because of this communication from the NCA and the subsequent action, we were in the office of the lawyer for hours. While at that, somebody called to tell us that there was a letter in circulation.
“When we checked, we realised that it was not on the official social media handle of Wontumi Multimedia. There are several fake, unauthorised social media handles of Wontuni Multimedia, which are not utilised, and it was one of these that they used. Later, I saw that a ‘fake’ stamp had been used on it,” he explained.
He added that there has been no official communication from security agencies regarding the broadcaster’s reported arrest, and the identity of those who apprehended him remains unknown.

Addressing the lack of continuity that hampers Africa’s development, she urged leaders to craft national development plans that would be respected by successive governments.
While acknowledging that leaders may not agree on everything, she said it was vital to “agree on the fundamentals” and work toward “an Africa united in vision to defy the odds,” citing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a success story.
She further challenged both ruling and opposition parties to ensure stability during elections, warning that instability endangers livelihoods.
The Vice President expressed optimism that the adoption of the African Political Parties Initiative (APPI) implementation framework at the summit would “help foster political cooperation across borders to address regional threats, deal with illicit trade, and respond to pandemics.”
The APPI framework, yet to be officially adopted, aims to create a platform for dialogue, build institutional capacity, sustain cooperation, resolve disputes, share ideas, and collaborate on shared priorities.

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has expressed gratitude to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for announcing its withdrawal from the upcoming Tamale Central by-election.
He, however, cautioned prospective aspirants not to rush the process of selecting a successor to the late Dr. Murtala Mohammed.
The NPP, on Monday, August 11, 2025, declared that it would not field a candidate in the race following the tragic death of Tamale Central’s Member of Parliament, Dr. Mohammed, in the August 6 helicopter crash.
Dr. Mohammed’s passing has created a vacancy in the constituency, triggering preparations for a by-election as required by the constitution.
The NPP explained that its decision to step aside was to help avoid further political divisions during a period of national mourning.
Reacting to the development on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, during the Adua funeral rite for the late MP, Mr. Asiedu Nketia urged NDC members to avoid internal conflicts over the seat.
“We thank our brothers in the NPP for declaring that they will not contest us in Tamale Central. Now the challenge is ours — whether we will fight among ourselves over who should replace Murtala. On behalf of the party, I want to say, let us not rush in choosing his successor,” he said.

The agriculture sector is set for a significant financial boost in 2025, as the government and development partners commit a combined GHS 2.9 billion to support key programmes under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
According to the 2025–2028 Medium Term Expenditure Framework, the investment will primarily fund the flagship Feed Ghana programme, along with mechanisation, irrigation, livestock development and post-harvest infrastructure projects aimed at improving food security and reducing import dependence.
The financing structure shows that government resources, including Internally Generated Funds (IGF), will contribute GHS 1.61 billion (55.3%) while development partners will provide GHS 1.3 billion (44.7%)
Of the total allocation – GHS 226.6 million is earmarked for compensation of employees, GHS 1.13 billion will support goods and services with GHS 1.55 billion set aside for capital expenditure
The funding aligns with Ghana’s broader Agriculture for Economic Transformation Agenda (AETA), which prioritises modernising the sector, boosting productivity, and creating sustainable employment opportunities across the value chain.
Under the same framework, government is advancing plans for a bold agricultural policy aimed at slashing its $2 billion annual palm oil import bill.
This would be achieved by significantly scaling up domestic production and diversifying into high-value tree crops.
The plan includes the rollout of a National Palm Oil Industry Policy, which will support the distribution of 1.5 million oil palm seedlings to farmers.
It is also to promote large-scale out-grower plantation schemes and provide incentives to expand local processing capacity.
The initiative, dubbed the “RedGold” oil palm programme, is expected to catalyse private sector investment, create thousands of jobs across rural Ghana and aligns with the country’s import substitution and agro-industrial transformation agenda.

The helicopter crash killed two senior ministers and six others
Following a military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the Ghana Association of Small-Scale Miners, Adu Gyamfi, has criticised proposals to ban small-scale mining.
He described the calls as “needless” and illogical, arguing that the crash had no connection to the activities of small-scale miners.
In an interview with Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Gyamfi stated that the incident does not warrant a complete ban on mining.
He asserted that miners did not attack the helicopter and that the crash did not occur at a mining site. He likened the calls for a ban to “using medicine meant to treat a bleeding nose to treat pain in the bone.”
Gyamfi believes those proposing the ban are acting out of “pain, grief, and ignorance.”
He criticised leaders for being “ignorant of the reality on the ground,” noting that unemployment drives many people into small-scale mining.
He urged the government to find lasting solutions to the problem rather than engaging in “lip service.”
“Those calling for a ban on small-scale mining following the military helicopter crash are like using medicine meant to treat a bleeding nose to treat pain in the bone. One thing I have observed in Ghana is that the fight against galamsey is not a difficult task, but our approach to fighting it is our challenge,” Gyamfi said.
“Those who have proposed a ban on small-scale mining did so out of pain and grief following the helicopter crash, and also out of ignorance,” he added.
He further stated that the majority of people involved in galamsey do so due to unemployment, and accused leaders of being “ignorant of the reality on the ground.”
“I would first extend our condolences to the bereaved families. But are we saying the helicopter fell into a galamsey pit and crashed? Did galamseyers shoot at the helicopter? Or were the pilot and crew members galamseyers?” he asked.
Gyamfi stressed that, if politicians stop meddling in the fight against galamsey and dedicated, independent personalities are appointed to lead it, the country can win the fight against illegal mining.
He emphasised that licensed small-scale miners have not been granted permits to operate in forest reserves or water bodies and that they have contracted people to prevent others from engaging in illegal mining.
He urged authorities to identify those who have failed in their duties and allowed illegal mining to persist, instead of blaming licensed small-scale miners.

The Chief Executive Officer of RLEQ Group and founder of the RLEQ Foundation, Richard Nii Armah Quaye, has donated GH₵500,000 to the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment to support the fight against opioid abuse among Ghanaian youth.
Speaking at the ministry during the presentation, Quaye commended the ministry for its efforts in improving the lives of young people under the current minister’s leadership.
He noted that a few weeks ago, the minister had called on him to support efforts to combat rape and opioid abuse.
Quaye stated that as a young entrepreneur employing over 4,000 Ghanaian youth, with an average age of 26 years, he had a vested interest in youth development.
He said his experiences across Africa, particularly in Sierra Leone, had shown how opioid abuse could impair young people both mentally and physically, making them unfit for productive work.
He warned that Ghana risked taking the same path if the issue was not addressed urgently, describing the situation as a national threat.
He stressed that the country’s economic fortunes depended on its youth and called for significant attention to be given to the problem.
Explaining the role of his foundation, Quaye said the RLEQ Foundation was established to provide social justice to deprived, forgotten, and marginalised communities.
He added that apart from creating jobs, the foundation had set up food banks in the Greater Accra Region, with plans to expand to all regions.
According to him, the initiative aimed to support people who were unemployed and could not afford basic necessities, thereby reducing the likelihood of them turning to drugs for comfort.
Quaye indicated that the foundation was committed to working closely with the ministry to address opioid abuse among those already affected.
He said the GH₵500,000 donation demonstrated the foundation’s commitment and unwavering support in the fight against opioid abuse and rape.
Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, expressed his gratitude for the donation to help curb the menace.
Marking International Youth Day, the minister reflected on the role of young people in Ghana’s future.
“Our focus is on five main thematic areas, but key in those… is the wellness and wellbeing of young people. No amount of development can take place when the people are not in the best state of mind and health,” he explained.
He emphasised the need for research to fully understand the problem.
“You can address a problem midway through it, but you are able to address it properly when you have a proper understanding of what the root cause of the problem is,” he said. “A lot of the solutions… are ad-hoc… so we commissioned research into understanding what exactly is leading to young people doing this.”

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kurt Okraku, says it is too early to decide whether he will seek a third term in office.
Speaking at the 31st GFA Ordinary Congress held at Ningo, Okraku stressed that his focus for now is on improving Ghana’s football rather than discussing future elections.
“It’s premature. We have almost two and a half years to save the Ghanaian game. When the time comes, I will make a decision, just like others who are eligible to contest. This should not be a topic for us now” he said.
The GFA president urged stakeholders to shift their attention to the ongoing transformation of the local game, highlighting the high level of investment the association had secured.
He called on football clubs to adapt and respond positively to current challenges as part of efforts to develop the sport in the country.
The 2024 Financial Stability Review has shown that cheque usage by volume declined slightly, but the total value of cheque-based transactions jumped by a striking 30.97%, hitting GH₵384.96 billion.
This is up from GH₵293.93 billion posted in 2023.
The marginal 0.15% drop in interbank cheque volumes under the Cheque Codeline Clearing (CCC) system suggests that while fewer cheques are being written, those that are processed now carry significantly more financial weight.
The divergence is a shift toward cheques being used predominantly for large corporate payments, high-value settlements or legacy institutional transactions.
The Ghana Interbank Settlement (GIS) platform recorded a 78.12% increase in transaction value, reaching GH₵6.13 trillion, despite a 6.07% drop in volume further reinforcing the trend of fewer, but larger transactions.
Meanwhile, digital payment platforms continued their ascent.
The GhIPSS Instant Pay processed 161.2 million transactions worth GH₵355.07 billion which is a 32% increase in value.
Internet banking transactions rose 114.9% in value to GH₵212.44 billion, signalling increased consumer and business trust in digital financial services.
While the data underscores the resilience of traditional payment instruments like cheques, it also highlights the growing dominance of faster, more convenient digital options.
For businesses, the numbers point to a need to adapt payment strategies, balancing the security and familiarity of cheques with the efficiency of real-time digital transfers.
Deputy Director of A Rocha Ghana, Daryl Bosu, says the nation must treat the deaths of eight people in Wednesday’s military helicopter crash as a turning point in the fight against environmental crimes.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, August 12, he said the tragedy, which claimed the lives of two cabinet ministers, should never be ignored, especially because it occurred on the day the government was set to launch a major initiative against what he described as “environmental terrorism.”
“We were all anticipating that these people were going to join us as well, and then we would have a very great program. Because I think we were all very interested in the program the government was launching, but we thought that we needed to really deal with the menace of this environmental crime around us,” Mr Bosu said.
He stressed that the launch was an important step toward holding the government accountable for ending environmental destruction.
“Any program that was going to help us do that, we’re also going to be there to listen and make sure that we keep the government accountable and also responsible for everything they have said. So we were really looking forward to this.”
But for Bosu, the tragedy that struck on such a significant day has given the fight against environmental crimes a deeper meaning.
“To have this, I will say, serious sacrifice. And this was a sacrifice on the day of such a launch, for me, is, really significant in the sense that, eight people had to sacrifice their life for this initiative we want to do, and it’s also kind of an initiative to rid our country of this menace, of this environmental terrorism that we’re experiencing. So there’s no way we can sit down and ignore this sacrifice.”
Mr Bosu called on the government and citizens to treat the moment as a wake-up call.
“Yeah, we cannot… something we need to really take seriously. If we’re thinking of just letting this responsible, cooperative mind go on as just like the committee mining was, then this should be the turning point.
“Nothing should be the same ever again. We need to do things differently. We need to deal with this menace once and for all.”

Ghana’s Ambassador Designate to South Korea, Kojo Choi, has expressed confidence in Ghana’s potential to attract high-value investments from Korean companies if mutually beneficial conditions are created.
Speaking in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV’s Face to Face on Tuesday, August 12, Choi said Ghana and Africa could serve as platforms for Korea’s next phase of industrial and technological expansion.
Choi said, “If it will benefit our country [Ghana], we have to go and see what is in there. If you think of Korea, it is a very high-tech, very industrial place. So many of the companies in Korea are looking for ways and means of being able to go on the next journey.
“I believe that Ghana and Africa can provide that platform for them. Of course, there are certain conditions, and if the environment is suitable for them, they will only come when they know it’s beneficial to them. Ghana will only have them when we know it’s beneficial to us.”
He stressed that such partnerships must be mutually beneficial, adding that Korean companies would only invest if the environment was favourable, and Ghana should ensure the benefits were reciprocal.
“A good ambassador understands business, being able to balance a win-win. I believe a lot could be done in that sense,” he stated.

Ghana’s Ambassador-Designate to South Korea, Kojo Choi, has revealed that he is fluent in several Ghanaian local languages, having lived in the country since the age of 14.
In an interview on Channel One TV’s Face to Face on Tuesday, August 12, Choi said he speaks Twi and Frafra, and has some knowledge of Ewe.
During the conversation, host Umaru Sanda Amadu challenged him to demonstrate his language skills. Choi responded by speaking a few words in Twi, showcasing his familiarity with the language.
Choi’s comments come amid public interest in his background, following his nomination to represent Ghana in South Korea.

Ghana is advancing plans for a bold agricultural policy aimed at slashing its $2 billion annual palm oil import bill.
This would be achieved by significantly scaling up domestic production and diversifying into high-value tree crops.
The plan outlined in the 2025–2028 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework, includes the rollout of a National Palm Oil Industry Policy, which will support the distribution of 1.5 million oil palm seedlings to farmers.
It is also to promote large-scale out-grower plantation schemes and provide incentives to expand local processing capacity.
The initiative, dubbed the “RedGold” oil palm programme, is expected to catalyse private sector investment, create thousands of jobs across rural Ghana and align with the country’s import substitution and agro-industrial transformation agenda.
Despite annual consumption of over 250,000 metric tons, Ghana’s domestic palm oil production currently stands at a mere 50,000 metric tons – a development which creates a major structural gap in the edible oils market.
The new policy seeks to address this imbalance by developing a fully integrated palm oil value chain—from farm to refinery.
The palm oil strategy falls under the broader Ghana Tree Crops Diversification Project (GTCDP), which aims to boost the commercial cultivation of cashew, coconut, rubber, mango and shea, alongside oil palm, to enhance farmer incomes and generate foreign exchange.
In 2025, the government, through the Ghana Tree Crops Development Programme (GTRDP), will procure and supply 5,070,000 seedlings; comprising 2,000,000 cashew, 1,650,000 rubber, and 1,420,000 coconut—for nationwide distribution.
An additional two million seedlings will be provided, including 500,000 shea and 1,500,000 mango, targeting 500,000 farmers across the country.

Deputy Director-General of the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), Dr Jamaldeen Tonzua Seidu, has rejected claims that the Ghana Armed Forces lack the equipment needed to operate effectively and safeguard the country.
His comments come amid public debate over the military’s logistical capacity following the August 6 helicopter crash that killed eight people, including Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah; Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; former Obuasi East parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong; and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, along with three crew members: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Monday, August 11, 2025, Dr. Seidu described as “misleading” suggestions that the Armed Forces are under-equipped.
“What’s the basis for saying we don’t have many operational aircraft or that they are not functioning well? Without evidence, such conclusions have no basis. We should assess what we have statistically against the scale of operations before passing judgment. The Ghana Air Force may well deserve commendation,” he said.
He added that despite Ghana’s socio-economic constraints, the military continues to perform.
“Under very trying circumstances, our men and women in uniform, particularly the Ghana Air Force are doing their best. We are probably doing well, but there is always room for improvement,” he noted.
Philip Duah, the Executive Director, Abak Foundation has advised employers to stop stigmatising qualified persons with disability (PWDs) seeking jobs in their companies.
He said the act was disheartening and shattered their hopes in acquiring decent jobs.
He gave the advice at a dissemination and closeout session of the Economic Empowerment Programme (EEP) of Sightsavers, Abak Foundation, Challenges Worldwide, Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations and inclusion Ghana in Accra.
The two-year programme saw 127 PWDs secure decent jobs either through direct employment or entrepreneurship, after receiving required skills.
The closeout session was to celebrate their achievement, the businesses of PWDs that improved and PWDs who got employment after receiving employability skills.
In a country where formal jobs were difficult to access, Mr Duah said a combination of a pathway of employability and entrepreneurship skill, would help to equip PWDs with the needed skills and knowledge to secure or create decent jobs, hence the relevance of the programme.
“Those who need employment need mentorship and support to catch the eye of the employer and that brought about a lot of training such as building the capacity of PWDs to write CVs and attend interviews,” he said.
David Agyemang, the Country Lead, Sightsavers, explaining the Ghana Economic Empowerment Programme pathways, said the Employability pathway sought to build the skills of persons with disabilities on how to present themselves at interviews and how to write curriculum vitae among others while the Entrepreneurship pathway built their capacity to establish or enhance their businesses.
After the training, he said the employers also did self assessment to identify how prepared they were to employ persons with disability.
“If they should employ a person with disability today, would they be able to handle that person? Would they be able to provide what we call a minimum accommodation for them?, he said”.
Agyemang said after all preparations, they brought all employers engaged together in a network called Ghana Business and Disability Network to make workplaces all-inclusive.
“All these processes that I’m telling you contributed in helping us to transition 127 persons with disabilities into jobs. You know that it’s very difficult to get jobs nowadays, even if you are not having the disabilities.
“If you don’t have a job, you know the challenges that come with it. But then picture, if you are a person with disability, your problem is even bigger, because you have to take care of your family, and at the same time, you have to deal with your disabilities.
“So these people have a lot of challenges they were going through, which I believe this employment will now make things easier for them,” he noted.
Isaac Wabey, a PWD and beneficiary of the programme, sharing his experience said: “I enrolled onto the programme as a job seeker. I was unemployed but I gained soft skills, and knowledge on CV writing among others.
“It was through the training that I secured a formal job and ventured into Entrepreneurship as well.
“Through the EEP, I am now employed, have set up my own business and have set up an NGO to help others,” he added.
Wabey said capacity building was key in giving PWDs competencies and skills to work and earn for a living.
He encouraged the programme’s implementors to promote networking at every gathering to enrich opportunities for all those marginalised.
Melody Emefa, another physically challenged woman and a beneficiary, said it was unfortunate that many people did not understand PWDs and so denied them access to opportunities.
As a producer of “coconut tombrown”, she said an engagement by the EEP took her through periodic monitoring and evaluation on how to keep records and relate to customers to boost her business and it had a great impact on her business.
“They trained me on how to do packaging of the product and assessed to ensure where I am selling was business-friendly enough to attract more customers and they have put a smile on my face,” she added.
Emefa called for more training for PWDs, saying they lagged behind without capacity building and funding support.
Glorious Accra Hearts of Oak
Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club PLC has filed a lawsuit against sports journalist Wisdom Osei Bonsu, popularly known as Darling Boy Pierro, and Kumasi-based Ezra TV/Radio Station, demanding GH¢200,000 in general damages for alleged defamation.
The suit, filed at the High Court in Kumasi, also seeks aggravated damages for what the club describes as malice and repeated publication of defamatory statements.
Hearts of Oak further requests a court order compelling the defendants to issue a full and unqualified apology and retraction, to be broadcast on Ezra TV/Radio and published across all online platforms of the station.
Additionally, the club is asking for a perpetual injunction restraining the defendants and their associates from publishing any defamatory material about Hearts of Oak in the future. The claim also includes legal costs and other reliefs the court may deem appropriate.
The writ, signed by lawyer Alhaji Abdulai Sharif on behalf of the club, gives the defendants eight days from the date of service to enter an appearance or risk judgment in their absence.
The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) says its strike in June this year was necessary, even though not all its objectives were achieved.
The nationwide industrial action, which lasted just over two weeks, was suspended on June 13, 2025, after engagements with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health and other stakeholders.
The strike was aimed at compelling the government to implement the 2024 Conditions of Service agreement.
Speaking at the Association’s Time With NEC Nurses’ Café summit, First Vice President Samuel Akolgo Alagkora said some of their demands — including the book and research allowance, the uniform allowance, the fuel allowance, and an 8% allowance — were met.
“Was the strike necessary? Yes, it was. Did we achieve our full aim? No, we did not. But we were able to secure the research allowance, uniform allowance, fuel allowance, and the 8% allowance, which unfortunately created confusion among some of our members.
“The market premium has been frozen to the point where it no longer reflects where it should be,” he noted.
Starbucks customers in South Korea have been asked to stop bringing “bulky items” into cafes to do their office work, after some brought printers and desktop computers.
Others had brought in partitions and more than one computer to mark their office territory.
As many people choose to work from home, cafes like Starbucks have been trying to strike a balance between being a casual coffee place and welcoming customers who choose to work there.
Starbucks said laptops, iPads, and mobile phones are still welcome, but not items that “impact the shared space” and limit seating.
Starbucks’s announcement comes as the growing trend of those studying and working at cafes – cagongjok – becomes a subject of intense debate in Korean society.
Since the pandemic, as the trend towards working from home escalates, many have started using the term cagonjok in not-so-friendly terms, showing irritation at those who use the seats for hours after only buying one drink.
Some users in Korea on social media have said cagonjok are also freeloading on electricity.
“If you can’t afford an office space and Starbucks is silly enough to let you run your office there for the price of their less-than-mediocre sugary caffeine beverage, go for it,” said one user on Reddit.
Koreans on social media have been reacting to the announcement from Starbucks.
“Good job,” said one Korean user on social media. “Now that Starbucks has started, other cafes should follow suit”.
Another said that people working from cafes made him stop going to Starbucks, and that the announcement is a “measure against those who’ve crossed the line with their bad manners”.
“It feels like there are way too many people without common sense these days,” the user wrote.
A spokesperson for Starbucks said: “Starbucks Korea has updated its policy so all customers can have a pleasant and accessible store experience.
“While laptops and smaller personal devices are welcome, customers are asked to refrain from bringing desktop computers, printers, or other bulky items that may limit seating and impact the shared space”.
“Starbucks remains committed to being a welcoming third place for coffee and connection, and where community thrives in every cup, every conversation, and every visit”, Starbucks concluded, though its mild-mannered response hides the derision many feel for those seen to be hogging seats at cafes.
Starbucks’s in South Korea move echoes sentiment in cafes across the world, including in England, where some coffee shops have introduced policies aimed at stopping remote workers from “hogging” tables and limiting turnover.

Ghana’s Ambassador Designate to Korea, Kojo Choi, has shared how his father influenced his decision to remain in Ghana and eventually become a naturalised citizen.
Mr Choi said he was 14 years old when he first arrived in Ghana with his Korean Presbyterian missionary parents. He attended SOS College in Tema, where he learned some Twi and later picked up a bit of the Frafra language.
Choi, who was born in Seoul, South Korea, said he has lived in Ghana since his adolescence and was naturalised as a Ghanaian in 1999.
Speaking on Channel One’s Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Tuesday, August 12, Kojo Choi said, “I was born in South Korea, I came here [Ghana] when I was 14 years old, I followed my parents. I lived in Seoul, the province where I was born. My parents were sent here as Korean Presbyterian missionaries. Ever since I came here, I have actually lived a unique life.”
Choi revealed that after completing SOS College, he had the opportunity to study in the United States. However, his father advised him to stay in Ghana and build a unique life.
He said that decision led him to take Ghanaian citizenship in 1999 — a choice he has never regretted.
“I had the opportunity of going to study in the US. At SOS college, everybody had the opportunity to apply to 15 to 20 universities to get admission. I was going to apply, and my father one day called me and sat me down, and said, ‘Son, why do you want to leave Ghana. You could stay here, and you could be a different person altogether. Honestly, I wanted to leave but decided to stay. And made a solemn vow to myself that I was not going back, and that was when I naturalised in 1999.”
His appointment generated debate on social media, with some critics questioning why the role was not given to a Ghanaian by birth.
Responding to such concerns, Choi said his life in Ghana has been unique and deeply rooted in the country’s culture and society.

Vision FC boss Nana Agyemang has lauded the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) latest financial intervention, which will see every Ghana Premier League club receive âµ1 million ahead of the upcoming season.
Reacting to the initiative by the GFA which was confirmed at the 31st Congress, Agyemang described the package as a huge boost for player welfare and club stability.
“I’m sure the players are jumping about by now. Most clubs suffered last year in terms of salary payments and stuff like that. A lot of clubs were behind. Players would cry out, but I think with this money, players are gonna be more settled and able to go into their games without thinking about financial burden anymore,” he said.
The Vision FC manager urged club owners to use the funds wisely, stressing the importance of channelling it towards player care and operational improvement.
“My hope is that the club owners will use these monies to take care of the players and the club as a whole. If that happens, coaches can do a good job, and everything will go well.”
Agyemang ended his remarks with high praise for the GFA leadership.
“Kudos to the GFA, kudos to Kurt for being able to get this for the clubs. It goes a long way to help Ghana football.”
With the 2025/26 GPL season kicking off on September 12, Agyemang will be aiming to build on Vision FC’s 11th-place finish from last season.

In a letter issued on Sunday, August 10, 2025, the office urged clergy across the country to formally present any prophecy or spiritual insight relating to high-profile political leaders, governance, national security, or public stability to its office for urgent assessment.
This comes in the wake of viral videos on social media following the August 6 helicopter crash that killed eight people, including two cabinet ministers.
In the videos, some self-proclaimed men of God claimed they had foreseen the crash in visions and issued warnings that were ignored.
Bishop Kessey welcomed the idea from the Presidency and added that it is not every prophecy that is meant for public consumption.
“Prophecies concerning high profile people must be handled with wisdom as Nathan did in the Bible when there was a direct message to King David” he explained.
He revealed further that Angels are assigned task if the prophecy is from God and the same way demons and principalities follow up on any negative message from the devil.

Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Dr Nii Moi Thompson, has urged the government to intensify its fight against illegal mining (galamsey) as a lasting tribute to the eight people killed in the August 6 helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.
The victims, including senior government officials and security personnel were reportedly en route to Obuasi to launch the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme, aimed at helping illegal miners adopt responsible and sustainable practices.
Speaking to Citi News on Monday, August 11, 2025, after signing the book of condolences at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) headquarters, Dr. Thompson stressed that the best way to honour the deceased is through decisive action against galamsey.
“They were flying there as part of efforts to fight galamsey. The most befitting tribute to their memory is to decisively eliminate the menace. We cannot shed crocodile tears, we must work hard to ensure they did not die in vain,” he said.

Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have called on the nation to ensure that its vulnerable population is not left behind in the transition to a green economy.
According to the CSOs an inclusive policy that amplified the voices of the marginalized communities and groups, including the youthful population was required to advance climate justice in the country.
The CSOs, ActionAid Ghana, Global Media Foundation (GloMeF), Citizens Watch Ghana, and the Young Urban Women made the call at a youth forum to mark the 2025 International Youth Day (IYD) in Sunyani.
With support from the National Youth Authority, the CSOs organized the forum on the theme “Igniting youth leadership potential through multilateral cooperation for social accountability”.
The IYD which falls on August 12, was instituted by the United Nations and celebrated annually to bring youth issues to the attention of governments, with this year’s celebration focusing on empowering the youth to help build a better planet for all.
Kwame Afram Denkyira, the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Manager Programme Manager of the AAG indicated that a decentralized climate adaptation effort was needed to allow vulnerable communities to design solutions based on their local realities.
He said: “Climate justice in Ghana is therefore about more than survival; it’s about dignity, equity and the right to a sustainable future”, saying “as the country strides towards development, integrating justice into climate action isn’t just a moral obligation but a practical necessity”.
Denkyira noted that challenges facing young people in securing decent jobs increased their vulnerability in society and thereby making them vulnerable to social vices and source of conflict and civil disorders as well as violence extremism.
He added that “They are more likely to accept recruitment into fighting forces when they face high incidence of joblessness”, and called on the government to do more and create job opportunities for the youthful population.
In a speech read on his behalf, Joseph Addae Akwaboa, the Bono Regional Minister said the government remained committed to creating an enabling environment for young people to thrive.
He indicated that the government fostering global cooperation and collaboration in all sectors was an indication that President John Dramani Mahama remained committed to creating jobs for the teeming youth to exploit their potentials.
He said: “As we speak now the government will soon roll out Cultural Villages and Creative Arts Fund to provide financial support to the youth to establish creative enterprises, fostering growth and sustainability of our creative sector”.
Akwaboa lauded the growing number of youth climate activists, innovators in renewable energy and student-led environment movements across Ghana and Africa, stressing the government commitment to strengthen climate change education, invest in green jobs, and incorporate youth voices in national climate change strategies.
Raphael Godlove Ahenu, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the GloMeF, a human rights and anti-corruption media advocacy organization stressed the need to explore the possibilities of uniting the voices of young people from the Global South and Global North for action.
“This is not only to address shared global challenges, but also to strengthen solidarity, equity, and innovation in tackling issues such as climate change, social injustice, digital exclusion, and democratic deficits”, he stated.
Ahenu stated that the climate crisis knew no borders, however solutions often reflected the Northern narratives and stressed the need to co-create inclusive climate actions, and champion equitable access to digital infrastructure.
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has urged media practitioners, commentators, bloggers, and content creators to exercise caution and avoid speculative or unverified reports about the recent military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.
In a statement signed by Captain (GN) V. A. Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations, the Armed Forces expressed concern over “many speculative and unsubstantiated commentaries” surrounding the Z-9 Air Force helicopter crash.
“For the sake of the bereaved families and loved ones, the Armed Forces urges media practitioners, panellists, social commentators, bloggers and content creators to be circumspect in their reportage as a way of according respect to the memories of the fallen heroes and to mitigate the sorrows of the bereaved families,” the statement read.
The GAF acknowledged the intense public interest in the tragedy and assured that thorough investigations have begun to determine the cause of the crash.
It added that the process will include collaboration with international agencies to ensure a comprehensive probe.
“At this point in time, any purported conclusions based on opinions, perceptions and conjectures will be premature and misleading. The public is therefore advised to be wary of such reportage,” the statement warned.
The Armed Forces expressed appreciation to the government, institutions, and individuals for their support during this period of national mourning and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
“May the souls of our patriots continue to rest in peace,” the statement concluded.

Accra, Aug. 12, GNA -The 2025 Vilcabamba Table Tennis Club Open (VTTC) championships will be held on August 16, 2025, in Denu, Volta Region.
The two-day event would take place at the Vilcabamba Hotel and the Centre for National Culture (CNC) in Denu.
The event, which aims to promote and grow table tennis, is expected to attract more than 50 participants from across the country.
The championship would feature various categories, including boys and girls U15, as well as youth male and female U-12.
Mr David Senyo Ahiaba, one of the organizers said all necessary measures have been put in place to ensure the successful hosting of the event, including event grounds, and accommodation.
He said winners of the various categories would be receiving cash prizes, trophies, T-shirts, and certificates.

Bishop Emeritus of the Konongo-Mampong Catholic Diocese, Most Rev Joseph Osei Bonsu, has urged Ghanaian clergy and prophets to show discretion and sensitivity when delivering prophecies, especially those with potentially harmful implications.
His appeal follows a directive from the Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, requiring that any prophecy or spiritual insight concerning senior political leaders, governance, national security, or public stability be formally submitted for urgent review.
The measure was announced on Sunday, August 10, 2025, after viral social media videos linked to the August 6 helicopter crash that killed eight people, including two cabinet ministers.
Speaking to Citi News on Monday, August 11, 2025, Bishop Osei Bonsu cautioned that modern prophecy should move beyond frequent predictions of death and disaster.
“If God has revealed something to you, find the right way to go about it. In the Old Testament, prophets were sent to preach God’s word and guide people toward righteousness, they did not constantly prophesy doom and gloom. Our prophets should learn from that,” he said.
Afriyie Ankrah, while stressing there would be no arrests for non-compliance, said prophets who ignore the directive should expect public judgment.
“There is nothing like an arrest, but society will judge them if they don’t obey. They used to complain about lacking access to victims, and now they have been given that access,” he noted.
A 40-year-old preacher, Godwin Asher, has been remanded into police custody by the Kwabenya Circuit Court for alleged incest and causing harm to his biological daughter.
Asher, a mason, pleaded not guilty to both charges.
His counsel, Godfred Anim Darko, argued that the accusation stemmed from disciplinary action taken against the 17-year-old victim, who had allegedly stayed away from home for several days.
Anim Darko told the court that the facts presented by the prosecution were completely different from what his client had told him.
He further contended that Asher had raised the victim since childhood and denied any sexual abuse.
Anim Darko proposed that the victim be placed in the care of one of her uncles and requested bail for the accused, stating that Asher was not a flight risk and had family and congregants present in court willing to stand as sureties.
The prosecution opposed the bail application, stating that Asher resided in the same house as the victim.
The court declined bail and remanded Asher to reappear on August 25, 2025.
The prosecution told the court that the complainant is a 64-year-old beautician and neighbour of the accused at Ashongman Estate.
On August 2, 2025, the complainant observed the victim bleeding from her right palm and enquired about the cause.
The victim reportedly said, “She held the cutlass and accused pulled the cutlass which resulted in a deep cut in the victim’s hands,” while attempting to defend herself during an alleged beating by her father.
The complainant assisted the victim to the police station and lodged a complaint.
Investigations revealed that the accused had allegedly been having sexual intercourse with the victim, with the last incident occurring on July 30, 2025.
A police medical form was issued, and the victim was examined and treated.
A seven-member governing board of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission
A seven-member governing board of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has been inaugurated to promote fairness and transparency in public sector compensation.
Inaugurating the board, Dr Rashid Pelpuo, Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, urged members to uphold equity in public sector pay administration.
He said the Commission played a pivotal role in promoting good governance and fairness in public sector compensation.
Dr Pelpuo underscored the challenges of managing the public service wage bill within a sustainable economic framework and reiterated the need for an Independent Emoluments Commission to address disparities in wage administration.
He congratulated the board members and commended their willingness to serve the nation.
The minister tasked the Board with developing mechanisms to reduce labour unrest arising from pay inequities.
“I assure you of my full cooperation and support in your work,” he said, expressing confidence in their expertise and commitment.
Samuel Adu-Yeboah, Board Chairman, expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the appointment and the opportunity to serve.
The board comprises professionals from law, public service, and the Ghana Employers Association.

Ghana striker Ransford-Yeboah Konigsdorffer has declared himself ready for the upcoming season in Germany with Hamburger SV.
The German-born Black Stars forward was close to leaving the newly promoted Bundesliga side following a move to join French outfit OGC Nice.
However, the deal fell through in the eleventh hour due to medical reasons.
Despite admitting his disappointment over the failed move, Konigsdorffer is poised for the new campaign which begins with a DFB Pokal clash against Pirmasens on Saturday, August 16.
“I am healthy, fully fit, and ready to give my all and I am really happy to be here in Mallorca at this training camp. I had no concerns with returning to HSV; this was never an issue for me as I maintained a good relationship with everyone at the club the whole time,” he told HSV media.
“It’s an intense pre-season with friendlies against good opponents which has led to some tired legs at the end of it all. Obviously, we want to win this game against RCD Mallorca and perform as well as we can, however, we will treat this game like the other games we’ve played so far and use it to test out new ideas. It’s crucial that we are ready for our DFB-Pokal match next week,’ he added.

Crystal Palace beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final to win their first major trophy
Crystal Palace have said “sporting merit is rendered meaningless” after losing their appeal against demotion from the Europa League to the Conference League.
After winning the FA Cup last season, Palace qualified for Europe’s secondary competition but were punished by UEFA for breaching multi-club ownership rules.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) sided with Europe’s governing body on Monday.
In a strongly worded statement, Palace said it was “almost impossible to receive a fair hearing.”
“The decision by UEFA and followed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport shows that sporting merit is rendered meaningless,” Palace said.
“It appears that certain clubs, organisations and individuals have a unique privilege and power.
“This growing and unhealthy influence has shattered the hopes and dreams of Crystal Palace supporters, and does not bode well for aspirational teams all over Europe competing to progress when rules and sanctions are unevenly applied in the most flagrant way.”
Palace added they will “continue to take legal advice on the next steps” as they prepare to compete in the Conference League.
BBC Sport has contacted UEFA for a response.
Nottingham Forest finished seventh in the Premier League last season and have been promoted to the Europa League in Palace’s place.
“Multi-club structures hide behind the charade of a ‘blind trust’ while clubs such as ours, who have no connection to another club whatsoever, are prevented from playing in the same competition,” Palace said.
“To compound the injustice, clubs that appear to have huge informal arrangements with each other are also allowed to participate and even possibly play against each other.”
The Eagles had until 1 March 2025 to show UEFA proof of multi-club ownership restructuring, but missed the deadline.
American businessman John Textor owned a 43% stake in Palace but sold it in June and is the majority owner of Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League.
Cas said that Textor “still had decisive influence over both clubs” at the time of UEFA’s assessment.
The panel also dismissed Palace’s argument that they received unfair treatment in comparison to Nottingham Forest and Lyon.
There is precedent for teams being sanctioned by UEFA and for CAS to uphold that decision for breaching multi-club ownership rules.
Irish Premier Division side Drogheda qualified for the 2025-26 Conference League but have been expelled from Europe due to US-based Trivela Group also owning Danish side Silkeborg, who also earned a spot in the competition.
“UEFA’s decision has wider implications for the governance of the sport,” Palace added.
“This should be a turning point for football. UEFA must fulfil its mandate to pass coherent rules which are properly communicated and applied, with reasonable cure periods to resolve uncertainty and consistent sanctions, treating all clubs equally with a proper appeal process.
“The European Court of Justice has made it clear that rulings similar to this will be under greater scrutiny from national courts in future. Only then will fairness and due process be granted to every team.”
Palace will face either Norwegian side Fredrikstad or Midtjylland of Denmark in the Conference League play-off round later this month.

Two people have been arrested by the police in connection with a video shared on social media, in which an individual is threatening to the lives of President John Mahama and First Lady, Lordina Mahama.
The police in a statement explained that a full-scale investigation into the threat has been launched.
It is following this that two suspects, identified as Prince Ofori and Yayra Abiwu, have been arrested and placed in custody for them to assist with the ongoing investigation.

The Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment has joined the global community in celebrating International Youth Day, highlighting the essential role of young people in shaping Ghana’s future.

TikToker Fante Comedy and Akosua Jollof
The Ghana Police Service has arrested Ghanaian TikToker Fante Comedy following a controversial live TikTok session he hosted about a recent helicopter crash.
The viral livestream featured participants who mocked the crash victims and wished that Sammy Gyamfi and President John Mahama had died in the incident instead.
During the live session, some participants, including a woman known as Akosua Jollof, also allegedly made threats.
The police arrested both Fante Comedy and Akosua Jollof for questioning.
According to the Police Service, other individuals believed to be accomplices are on the run and a manhunt is underway to apprehend them.
In a statement issued on August 12, 2025, the Police said, “The Ghana Police Service has commenced investigations into a viral TikTok video in which an individual is heard threatening the lives of the President of the Republic, H E John Dramani Mahama and the First Lady.

The US is sanctioning the Pareco-FF armed group, as well as the Congolese mining company CDMC
The United States has sanctioned an armed group accused of illicit mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), as both the army and the Rwandan-backed M23 rebel group traded accusations of violating a recently reached US-mediated ceasefire deal by attacking each other’s positions.
The US Department of the Treasury said on Tuesday that it was blocking all interests and restricting transactions with Pareco-FF, an armed group that it said controlled the key coltan mining site of Rubaya from 2022 to 2024, and which has opposed the M23 group.
The administration of President Donald Trump has been pushing for US access to the region’s minerals, as it has done in other parts of the world, including Ukraine.
It also slapped sanctions on the Congolese mining company CDMC, saying it sold minerals that were sourced and smuggled from mines near Rubaya and two Hong Kong-based export companies, East Rise and Star Dragon, which have been accused of buying minerals from the armed group.
“The United States is sending a clear message that no armed group or commercial entity is immune from sanctions if they undermine peace, stability or security in the DRC,” State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said in a statement.
Rubaya is currently under the control of the M23 group, which is already targeted by US sanctions. The mine there produces 15 to 30 percent of the world’s supply of coltan, a mineral used in electronics such as laptops and mobile telephones.
Many Pareco rebels integrated into the DRC military in 2009, but Pareco-FF emerged in 2022 in response to the M23 gains.
The sanctions come as Congolese army spokesman Sylvain Ekenge said in a statement that the M23 group’s “almost daily” attacks constitute an “intentional and manifest violation” of the declaration of principles, which the two parties signed in mid-July in Doha, whose terms include a “permanent ceasefire”.
It followed a separate peace deal between the Congolese and Rwandan governments, signed in Washington, DC, the previous month, which also helped the US government and US companies gain control of critical minerals in the region.
The Congolese army said it was ready to respond “to all provocations from this [M23 group] coalition, accustomed to violating agreements”, the statement said.
M23 spokesman Lawrence Kanyuka said in a post on X on Monday that DRC’s government was continuing “its offensive military manoeuvres aimed at full-scale war”.
The eastern DRC, a region bordering Rwanda with abundant natural resources but plagued by non-state armed groups, has suffered extreme violence for more than three decades.
A new surge of unrest broke out early this year when the M23 group captured the key cities of Goma and Bukavu, setting up their own administrations, with thousands killed in the conflict.
Violence has continued on the ground despite the US and Qatar-brokered peace deal, with fighting becoming more intense since Friday around the town of Mulamba in South Kivu province, where the front line had been relatively stable since March.
The M23 attacked positions between Friday and Monday held by pro-Kinshasa militia and army forces, and pushed them back several kilometres, after clashes using light and heavy weapons, local and security sources said.
The DRC government and the M23 rebels have agreed to sign a permanent peace deal by August 18, but the renewed fighting has threatened this effort.
The Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) has taken a firm stand, reminding the nation that it’s not HIV, but stigma and discrimination, that cause unnecessary deaths among people living with HIV (PLHIV).
Dr Samuel Yao Atidzah, Executive Director of GOSANET Foundation, underscored this sentiment on Zero Discrimination Day. He stated, “Stigma and discrimination hurt, kills faster than the disease itself.”
PLHIV, he explained, often isolate themselves out of fear, shunning testing and treatment opportunities, which jeopardizes both their own lives and public health.
Similarly, in earlier media initiatives led by GAC, Dr Kyeremeh Atuahene described distressing findings from the Ghana Statistical Service.
78% of women and 72% of men with awareness of HIV admitted to harboring discriminatory attitudes, such as refusing to buy produce from someone with HIV or opposing children with HIV attending school with others.
Dr Atuahene lamented that these deep misconceptions fuel dangerous discrimination.
At a training session held for journalists on Zero Discrimination Day, the Director-General reiterated that stigma, more than the illness, poses the greatest threat to PLHIV.
He emphasized the media’s vital role in promoting equality, dispelling myths, and reporting responsibly to prevent prejudice.
