South Africa’s rand firmed against a weaker dollar on Friday August 15, 2025, helped by higher gold prices as concerns over the United States’ fiscal health sent investors into the safe-haven asset.
At 1434 GMT, the rand traded at 17.58 against the dollar, about 0.2% stronger than its previous close.
Gold prices rose on Friday, boosted by a decline in the dollar, which was last trading down about 0.4% against a basket of currencies.
Like other major producers of precious metals, South Africa often benefits from higher gold prices.
Investors will be closely watching domestic inflation figures, due on Wednesday next week, for clues about the health of Africa’s most industrialised economy.
“It has been an impressive week for the ZAR so far, as it started the week above 17.70 and could make it 10 cents stronger at the close of trade today,” said ETM Analytics in a research note.
On the stock market, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange’s Top 40 (. JTOPI), opens new tab index closed down 0.1%.
South Africa’s benchmark 2035 government bond was flat, with the yield down half a basis point to 9.6%.

More than 40 people were missing in a boat accident in Nigeria after a boat conveying 50 persons to a popular market in northwest Sokoto State capsized on Sunday, the country’s emergency agency said.
The passengers were travelling to Goronyo market, a popular food produce market in the state, when the boat capsized. Ten people have been rescued, Zubaidar Umar, the head of the National Emergency Management Agency, said in a statement on social media platform X.
The agency said it is collaborating with local authorities and emergency responders in a search and rescue operation to locate the missing persons.
Three weeks ago, at least 13 people died and dozens more were missing after a boat ferrying around 100 passengers capsized in Niger State, in north-central Nigeria.
Nkwanta (O/R), Aug. 17, GNA – Mr. Sylvester Nkrumah, Director of Beyond Group of Companies, has paid a courtesy visit to the Municipal Chief Executive of Nkwanta South, Mr Joseph Kwame Antwi Awal.
Mr. Nkrumah described the visit as both a personal and professional gesture.
He congratulated the MCE on his appointment, and commended him for taking up such a crucial role in local governance.
The meeting focused on ways to enhance the development of the Municipality, including initiatives to improve health, education, and technical/ vocational training, particularly in the Brewaniase area.
Mr. Bright Owusu Nyasemhwe, the Chief Executive Officer of the Company, also emphasized the importance of forging public-private partnership (PPP) arrangements to accelerate development projects in the Municipality.
Mr. Joseph Kwame Antwi Awal, the MCE, who was also a staff of the Company (Beyond FM), was overwhelmed with the visit and the ideas brought on board for the development of the area.
The leaders expressed optimism that the collaborative effort between the private sector and local government would help drive socio-economic growth in the Municipality to appreciable levels.
Uganda has inaugurated its first large-scale gold mine, a $250 million Chinese-owned project in the country’s east that will also refine the bullion to 99.9% purity, according to a statement from the president’s office.
The landlocked east African country, which has a variety of minerals including copper, cobalt and iron ore, wants to expand its mining industry and position itself as a major gold producer and exporter.
Last year Uganda raised $3.4 billion from gold exports, according to central bank data, about 37% of the country’s total export revenue.
The figure includes the re-export of gold brought into the country, with nearly all its domestic production from small-scale artisanal miners.
While its gold export earnings have increased in recent years, it is still far behind Africa’s largest bullion producer Ghana, which raised $11.6 billion from shipments of the metal last year.
“In order to wake up in the minerals sector, we must have full value addition for all minerals like gold, lithium, tin among others,” President Yoweri Museveni said in a statement issued late on Saturday.
Akatsi (VR), Aug. 17, GNA – Mr Edward Doe Adade, the assembly member for Tatorme Fiato Electoral Area in the Akatsi South Municipality, has organised a clean-up exercise to ensure good hygiene practices within his area.
The exercise brought together officers from the Akatsi Police Command, Municipal Assembly staff, ECG staff, Environmental Health officials, decentralised departments, private sector entities, and residents in Akatsi.
Prior to the exercise, Mr Adade, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said the initiative aimed at ensuring a well cleaned and healthy environment for his electorates.
He explained that good hygiene and sanitation practices positioned every community on a path of growth “because the people will have sound minds to face their daily businesses.”
Mr Adade emphasised that recalcitrant individuals and businesses that failed to comply with sanitation directives would face the established laws against non-compliance.
The morning exercise that lasted for hours saw the clearing of bushes, distilling of choked gutters, removal of stagnant waste materials, and others.
There were also free National Health Insurance registration and card issuance for residents as well as free medical screening and medication for all residents during the exercise.
Mr Adade extended his gratitude to all stakeholders and called for regular clean up exercises within all Electoral Areas in the Municipality for a healthy living.
Residents and some Assembly Members commended the organisers of the exercise and called for continuous support to sustain it.
Dambai (O/R), Aug 17, GNA – Mr. Safo Nketia, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Krachi East, has donated assorted food items to over 362 widows in the Municipality.
The donation, which took place at the Department of Agriculture office in Dambai, aimed to provide relief to vulnerable widows facing financial hardship.
Each widow received a 25kg bag of rice, bringing joy and relief to the beneficiaries.
Mr. Safo Nketia emphasized the importance of supporting widows, particularly those struggling with poverty after the loss of their husbands.
“It is our duty as a society to show them compassion and provide assistance,” he added.
The beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the gesture, with some describing it as a major relief.
Madam Alimatu Abdulai Adam from Dambai old town said the donation was a significant help, while 58-year-old Madam Faustina Amidu described it as invaluable.
A solemn thanksgiving service has been held in honour of the late Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala, who tragically lost their lives in the August 6 military helicopter crash.
The service, held on Sunday, August 17, at the Christ the King Catholic Parish in Accra, brought together government officials, family members, friends, and members of the public to pay tribute to the life and legacy of the late minister.
The two were part of eight individuals including top government and military officials who died when the helicopter they were travelling in crashed en route to an anti-illegal mining event in Obuasi.
At the service, tributes poured in describing the two as as committed individuals, patriots, and men of deep integrity who dedicated their lives to national service and peace building efforts.
The thanksgiving service comes just days after a state funeral was held at Black Star Square on August 15, followed by a burial at the Military Cemetery in Tse Addo.
President John Dramani Mahama, and the First Lady Lordina Mahama were in attendance. Other high profile persons including Vice President Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa ; Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh were also present.

Donald Trump’s special envoy said Russia had agreed to allow the US and Europe to give Ukraine “robust” security guarantees as part of a potential peace deal.
Steve Witkoff told CNN it was agreed at the Alaska summit that the US and Europe could “effectively offer Article 5-like language to cover a security guarantee”, referring to NATO’s principle that an attack on one member is an attack on all.
Putin has long opposed Ukraine joining NATO, and Witkoff said the arrangement could be an alternative if the Ukrainians “can live with it”.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky described the US’s security guarantee offer as “historic” ahead of talks with Trump and European leaders on Monday.
Speaking ahead of his visit to Washington DC, Zelensky said any guarantee “must really be very practical, delivering protection on land, in the air, and at sea, and must be developed with Europe’s participation”.
Meanwhile, following a meeting on Sunday of the “coalition of the willing” – a group of nations including the UK, France and Germany that have pledged to protect peace in Ukraine once it is achieved – a No10 spokesman said leaders had commended Trump’s “commitment” to providing security guarantees.
The leaders also “re-emphasised the readiness to deploy a reassurance force once hostilities have ceased, and to help secure Ukraine’s skies and seas and regenerate Ukraine’s armed forces”, the spokesman added.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Nato Secretary-General Mark Rutte are set to join Zelensky in Washington on Monday.
Macron said the group would challenge Trump on how far he was willing to go in terms of security guarantees.
“If we’re not strong today, we’ll pay dearly tomorrow,” he said, adding the group’s plan was to “present a united front”.
Witkoff also told CNN on Sunday that Russia had made “some concessions at the table” about territory, noting Donetsk would be part of an “important discussion” on Monday.
It comes after Putin reportedly presented Trump with a peace offer in Alaska on Friday that would require Ukraine to withdraw from the Donetsk region of the Donbas, in return for Russia freezing the front lines in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.
The BBC’s US partner CBS cited diplomatic sources as saying that European officials were concerned Trump may try to press Zelensky to agree to the terms.
Russia claims the Donbas as Russian territory, controlling most of Luhansk and about 70% of Donetsk. It also illegally annexed the Crimean peninsula in 2014, eight years before launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Zelensky on Tuesday said Ukraine would reject any Russian proposal to give up the Donbas region, warning it could be used as a springboard for future attacks.
He has also pointed to the country’s constitution, which requires a referendum before a change in its territory.
Monday’s White House meeting will be Zelensky’s first since an acrimonious public exchange in the Oval Office in February, when Trump told him to be more “thankful” for US support and accused him of “gambling with World War Three”.
Zelensky was then told to leave the White House.
He appeared to reconcile with Trump in April, in what the White House described as a “very productive” 15-minute meeting before they attended Pope Francis’s funeral.
Ukraine has also signed a minerals deal that gave the US a financial stake in the country, and Kyiv made it clear they were willing to pay for US arms.
But there will have been concern in Kyiv and other European capitals following the Trump-Putin meeting on Friday.
The Russian president, who is facing an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for alleged war crimes in Ukraine, stepped off his jet and onto a red carpet to be warmly received by Trump, who later said they had a “fantastic relationship”.

Accra Hearts of Oak have been crowned champions of the 2025 Gbese Mantse Charity Homowo Cup after beating Kpando Heart of Lions 2-0 on Sunday, August 17, 2025.
At the end of 90 minutes at the Accra Sports Stadium, two first half goals were enough for a dominant Hearts of Oak side to retain the trophy they won last year facing the same opposition.
The Phobians started the game with desire and hunger to put their opponents to the sword, and it paid off in the 36th minute when Ali Mohammed assisted Frank Duku to get the first goal.
Ex-Ghanaian athlete Bismark Amponsah cries over government’s neglect
Four minutes after the first, Frank Duku became the creator for striker Hamzah Issah to increase the tally of the Phobians before the break.
Hearts of Oak could have scored more in the second half, but Mawuli Wayo was not as clinical as his compatriots who took their chances in the first 45 minutes of the game.
The Phobians have now made amends for their defeat to rivals Asante Kotoko in the President’s Cup by defending the Gbese Mantse Charity Homowo Cup.
Both teams really gave each other a difficult opposition and will all use it as a perfect challenge to prepare for the upcoming GHALCA top four tournament which commences on Wednesday August 20, 2025.
Bibiani Gold Stars, Heart of Lions, Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak will face off in the GHALCA Top 4 tournament on Wednesday.

Accra, Aug 17, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama will on Sunday, August 17, depart Ghana for an official two-country visit to Japan and Singapore.
A statement issued by Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidential Spokesman and Minister in-charge of Government Communications, said the two-country visit is aimed at deepening bilateral relations, expanding trade and investment links, and advancing cooperation on shared development priorities.
It said while in Japan, the President would attend the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IX), where he would make a presentation at a plenary session on the Economy: Promoting Trade and Investment.
The statement said President Mahama would deliver an address at a Ghana Presidential Investment Forum, showcasing the country’s investment opportunities and the Resetting Ghana agenda.
He would also hold a series of bilateral meetings with key Japanese partners, including the President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), senior representatives of the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), and the Prime Minister of Japan, Shigeru Ishiba, to discuss trade, investment, technical cooperation, and infrastructure partnerships.
The statement said following his engagements in Japan, the President would undertake a three-day state visit to Singapore.
It said the state visit would include a courtesy call on President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, a meeting with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, participation in the Africa-Singapore Business Forum, and an address at an investment forum to present Ghana’s reform and investment priorities and strengthen private-sector linkages between Ghana and Singapore-based investors.
It said the visits seek to attract investment, broaden market access for Ghanaian goods and services, mobilise technical and development cooperation, and bolster partnerships in technology, infrastructure, finance, and human capital development.
Bismark Tetteh Nyarko, Member of Parliament for Upper Manya Krobo, has criticised the interference by Commonwealth legal bodies in Ghana’s internal judicial matters, notably the suspended Chief Justice’s reinstatement.
This follows a joint statement from the Bar Council of England and Wales and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, on August 14, which called on the Ghanaian government to immediately reinstate suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo and uphold due legal process in the ongoing impeachment proceedings
During an appearance on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday August 17, the NDC MP flatly defended Ghana’s sovereignty, challenging the appropriateness of external institutions commenting on national constitutional processes.
“It is very unacceptable because what they should know is that we are no longer a colony of the British, so for a commonwealth association to authorise our attorney general and minister of justice to reinstate the suspended CJ is uncalled for. Our constitution has outlined how such matters should be addressed.”
Nyarko argued that Ghana’s constitution provides clear and sufficient procedures for such serious matters.
“So far as we are adhering to our constitutional provisions the association should leave the matter to determine. We are capable of determining our own issues. So I think that was a joke; we are not taking it seriously.”
Meanwhile, Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine has responded to the Bar Council of England and Wales and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, clarifying that the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo will remain in force until the inquiry committee concludes its work and submits a report to President John Dramani Mahama.
Dr. Ayine stressed that the suspension strictly follows the provisions of the 1992 Constitution, dismissing claims of constitutional breaches or executive interference in the handling of the three petitions against the Chief Justice.

Qwaku Messiah Gives Back to Oti Region Through Charity and Rabbit Farming
Ghanaian musician, Qwaku Messiah, has revealed that his influence goes beyond just organizing shows and performing on stage. Speaking in an interview on Kessben 92.9FM’s Music Zone with host Diijay Nat Bubu the Stubborn DJ, the artiste detailed his contributions to both the entertainment industry and his community.
According to him, he does not only mount stages for his personal performances but also provides platforms for other artists in his town to showcase their talent.
Beyond music, Qwaku Messiah is deeply committed to charity and community development. He disclosed that he has donated items to the Government Hospital in the Oti Region to support healthcare delivery. Additionally, he has funded 150 health insurance registrations for people in the Oti Region, ensuring access to medical care for the less privileged.
In his bid to promote sustainable livelihoods, Qwaku Messiah has also introduced rabbit farming education to the people. He invited resource personnel from the University of Cape Coast to train and enlighten residents on rabbit farming as a viable source of income.
These initiatives, he emphasized, reflect his passion for giving back to society and empowering his people while continuing to push boundaries with his music career.
Amorim later clarified that Onana had not been dropped for this game and was also not about to leave the club.
The United boss said the Cameroon keeper had not been considered because he had missed every pre-season match because of a hamstring injury he sustained at the beginning of last month.
United did have tentative discussions much earlier in the transfer window about signing World Cup-winning goalkeeper Martinez from Aston Villa.
That went nowhere. More recently, they have been quick to rule themselves out of a move for PSG’s Champions League-winning goalkeeper Donnarumma.
In addition, United also decided to loan highly-rated 21-year-old Radek Vitek to Bristol City.
Internally, United have high hopes for the Czech Republic youth international, whose performance in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Charlton on Saturday was labelled “world class” by Addicks coach Curtis Fleming.
However, United clearly feel Vitek is not yet ready to deal with the pressure of being a regular at Old Trafford.
So, if Onana was not available, it left Amorim facing a straight choice between Bayindir and 37-year-old Tom Heaton, who signed a one-year contract extension this summer and says he still has a “drive and desire to play”.
Amorim was displeased at being asked about his goalkeeper selection during his assessment of Sunday’s loss.
He took particular exception to a suggestion that Bayindir’s failure to keep out Son Heung-min’s corner in an EFL Cup loss at Tottenham in December, when the keeper was also crowded out in his own six-yard box, was a reason why picking him was a risk.
“Why?” he responded. “[Son’ goal was] without VAR. With VAR, it’s a foul.
“And then what happened in the next game? Who saved the penalty? Who saved the game? You don’t remember?
“Bayindir was unbelievable in that game. I consider everything to put one on another.”
There were actually four games, and almost a month, between the Tottenham defeat and the next time Bayindir played – in United’s FA Cup penalty shoot-out victory at Arsenal.
Onana started all the matches in between.
Given Amorim’s subsequent comments about his overall goalkeeping department, the chances are Onana will be back for next weekend’s trip to Fulham.
“We proved today we can win any game in the Premier League, especially against a great team like Arsenal,” he said.
“We were the better team. I’m happy with the three goalkeepers.”
Accra Hearts of Oak has won the 2025 Gbese Mantse Homowo Peace Cup after beating fellow Ghana Premier League side Heart of Lions with a 2-0 victory.
After weeks of anticipation, the two Ghanaian top-flight clubs locked horns on Sunday, August 17, at the Accra Sports Stadium to battle for the trophy.
Both teams set up strongly and made their intent to win right from the start of the first half. After a series of end-to-end action, Hearts of Oak broke the deadlock in the 36th minute when new signing Frank Duku scored after he was served on a plate by Ali Mohammed.
Four minutes later, leading marksman for the Phobians, Hamza Issah, showed pace and power to score a stunning goal, doubling the lead for Hearts of Oak.
Despite a spirited effort from Heart of Lions in the second half, the team could not break down the Hearts of Oak defense. The victory means Hearts of Oak has now lifted the Homowo Charity Cup two times in a row.
Up next for Hearts of Oak and Heart of Lions, both teams will turn attention to the upcoming GHALCA Top 4 tournament on 20th August 2025 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Former Member of Parliament for Ofinso South, Mr. Ofosu Asamoah, has raised questions about the presence of Dr. Samuel Sarpong on the ill-fated helicopter that crashed on August 6, leading to the death of all eight people on board as per reports from Ghana Web.
In an exclusive interview, Asamoah expressed confusion over the circumstances surrounding Sarpong’s involvement in the flight. “Why was Dr. Sarpong on that aircraft?”
Asamoah queried, noting that while the other victims held official positions, Sarpong’s role in the incident was unclear.
“It is important to understand why he was there. Was he on official duty, or was there another reason?”
Among the other victims were high-profile government officials, including Minister of Defence Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator,
Alhaji Limuna Mohammed Muniru. Also onboard were military personnel Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
The tragic crash claimed the lives of these distinguished individuals, leaving their families and colleagues in mourning.
However, Asamoah’s remarks highlight the public’s desire for clarity regarding Sarpong’s role in the ill-fated flight.
The eight individuals who perished in the tragedy have been laid to rest, but the inquiries into the details surrounding the flight are still ongoing.
Accra Hearts of Oak secured the 2025 Homowo Cup after defeating Kpando Heart of Lions 2-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.
The Phobians wrapped up the victory within a blistering four-minute spell in the first half. New signing Frank Duku opened the scoring in the 36th minute, pouncing on a rebound from a set-piece to register his debut goal for the club.
Four minutes later, Duku turned provider, setting up Hamza Issah, who lofted the ball over the onrushing Lions’ goalkeeper to double the advantage.
Coach Mas-Ud Dramani’s men controlled much of the opening half and looked sharp in transition, punishing the Lions’ defence with quick counters. Though Kpando Heart of Lions came out stronger after the break, they could not break down a resolute Hearts backline marshalled with discipline and composure.
The ceremonial fixture, played in honour of the Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayi-Bonte II, drew several dignitaries, including National Sports Authority Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah and Hearts of Oak board member Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe.

Home » America Travel News » Canada, UK, South Africa, China, Japan, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Korea, And More Brace For Major Disruption As U.S. Unveils Two Hundred And Fifty Dollar Visa Integrity Fee: New Update You Need to Know
Published on
August 18, 2025
Travelers from Canada, the UK, South Africa, China, Japan, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Korea, and other countries are facing significant disruptions as the U.S. introduces a $250 visa integrity fee. This new charge, which applies to all nonimmigrant visa holders, including tourists, students, and business travelers, is expected to create financial obstacles for millions of international visitors. With travel costs already high and visa processes increasingly complex, this fee is likely to deter travel to the U.S., particularly from regions already burdened by stringent visa policies. Critics argue that the move will lead to decreased tourism, strained academic exchanges, and reduced business opportunities, impacting both the U.S. economy and international relations. The added financial burden will especially affect travelers from lower-income countries, making U.S. visitation even more exclusive and potentially leading to shifts in travel preferences toward more accessible destinations.
The U.S. government has introduced a new $250 “visa integrity fee” for international travelers, a move that is raising alarms within the global tourism industry. Part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law on July 4, 2025, the fee is set to go into effect later this year. The fee applies to all nonimmigrant visa holders, including tourists, students, temporary workers, and business visitors. Critics argue that this additional financial burden could deter millions of travelers and negatively impact the U.S. economy, particularly the tourism and hospitality sectors.
This non-waivable fee will be added on top of existing visa processing charges, such as the MRV (Machine Readable Visa) fee, anti-fraud fees, and reciprocity fees. Tourism experts warn that the $250 charge will make U.S. travel significantly more expensive, especially for visitors from lower-income regions. In particular, travelers from Africa, where visa processes are already complex and costly, will be disproportionately affected by the new fee.
Economic Consequences for the U.S. Travel Industry
The U.S. Travel Association predicts that the visa integrity fee could reduce spending by international visitors by up to $9.4 billion over the next three years. Additionally, the association estimates that the fee may lead to the loss of approximately 15,000 jobs in the U.S. travel industry. These projections, however, differ from the estimates provided by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), which forecasts that the fee will generate $27 billion for the U.S. government over the next decade—roughly $2.7 billion annually.
Despite the CBO’s optimistic view of revenue generation, economists argue that its analysis overlooks the broader economic impact, such as a decrease in travel demand. A report from Tourism Economics, part of Oxford Economics, estimates that the fee could result in a 5.4% reduction in international visitors, or nearly one million fewer trips annually. This drop in visitation would lead to lower spending in key sectors such as hospitality, retail, and cultural attractions, thus reducing tax revenue and slowing job growth.
The Impact on African Travelers
The new fee has sparked particular concern in Africa, where many travelers already face high visa application costs and restrictive entry requirements. For middle-class citizens in countries like Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana, the additional $250 charge could make travel to the U.S. financially unfeasible. The growing demand for travel to the U.S. from African students, entrepreneurs, and tourists—along with the expansion of U.S.-bound flights by airlines such as Ethiopian Airlines and South African Airways—could be stunted by the extra cost.
The fee’s impact extends beyond tourism. It could disrupt vital academic, cultural, and business exchanges between the U.S. and African nations. The added financial burden may lead African families to opt for alternative destinations with more accessible visa policies, such as Canada, the UK, or China. This shift in travel patterns may undermine U.S.-Africa relations at a time when countries like China and Europe are actively competing for African travelers.
Challenges with Refund Process and Practical Concerns
The U.S. government has stated that the $250 fee will be refundable once a visa expires, but this provision has raised concerns about its practicality. Most U.S. visitor visas are valid for up to 10 years, which means travelers would have to wait years before they can apply for a refund. The complexities of the refund process and the long wait time make it impractical for most travelers. The CBO acknowledges that only a small percentage of travelers would likely pursue reimbursement, and the systems needed to process these refunds could take years to develop.
Threat to U.S. Tourism Competitiveness
As the U.S. prepares to host major global events, including the Olympics and FIFA World Cup, the introduction of this visa integrity fee raises questions about the country’s tourism competitiveness. A report from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) projects that the U.S. will experience a $29 billion decline in international visitor spending in 2025, making it the only major economy expected to see a decrease in tourism that year. While other nations are offering more welcoming visa policies, the U.S. risks alienating potential visitors by imposing additional costs, thus hindering its ability to attract tourists from around the world.
Broader Implications for U.S.-Africa Relations and Global Travel
Currently, travelers from over 40 countries, including Japan, South Korea, and much of Western Europe, benefit from visa-free entry to the U.S. through the Visa Waiver Program. However, no African country is part of this program, meaning African travelers will bear the full brunt of the new $250 fee. This only exacerbates existing difficulties for African nationals seeking U.S. visas, further limiting their ability to visit the country.
The new fee may also discourage family visits, which are vital for maintaining remittance-linked travel flows, a significant source of financial support for many African families. In addition, African small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may face difficulties in establishing business relationships with U.S. markets. As other global regions ramp up their efforts to attract African travelers, the visa integrity fee could have lasting effects on U.S.-Africa ties and the broader international tourism industry.
Conclusion: Rethinking U.S. Visa Policies for the Future
Travelers from Canada, the UK, South Africa, China, Japan, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Korea, and others are set to face significant disruptions as the U.S. introduces a $250 visa integrity fee, adding financial burdens and deterring international travel to the U.S.
The $250 visa integrity fee is set to have significant economic and diplomatic consequences, particularly for international tourism and African travelers. As global tourism continues to grow and international competition for travelers intensifies, the U.S. government may need to reconsider its visa policies. While the goal of generating government revenue is important, the long-term impacts—such as discouraging millions of travelers and damaging international relations—could outweigh the short-term benefits. Striking a balance between financial objectives and the long-term sustainability of the U.S. tourism industry and global partnerships will be crucial in shaping the future of international travel to the U.S.

Ghana’s former Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen, has left no doubt about his political future, he intends to run for president again in 2028. In an exclusive interview with Sandra Babu-Boateng on PanaGenius TV’s The BreakDown, the veteran politician reflected on his dramatic departure from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), his international track record, and his conviction that Ghana now needs a leader capable of guiding both the nation and the African continent into a new era.
Kyerematen, often credited as the chief architect behind the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), said his resignation from the NPP in 2024 was not an impulsive move, but the result of years of watching the party he helped build drift away from its core philosophy.
“I made that decision because I became part of the NPP as a founding member in the early 1990s only because I was attracted to certain foundational values of the party…At a point when I felt that these values were being eroded, and this was not just 2024, I started complaining about these challenges…The vehicle that was carrying the ideals had completely departed from the original ideals and it was time for me to move on. And so that’s why I stepped out and then established the Movement for Change,” he explained.
Watch the interview below.
For years, Kyerematen was widely seen as a natural successor within the NPP’s leadership ladder. He recalled how former President John Agyekum Kufuor himself once framed the party’s leadership evolution in generational terms.
“President Kufuor had made a very interesting statement…that in NPP our leadership is anchored on generational leadership…He specifically talked about this generation being former president, he mentioned a few other names. He said after that generation the next generation will be Alan Kyerematen and the rest,” he recounted.

But when the moment came, the party turned elsewhere. Despite his extensive record, Kyerematen said internal politics blocked him from becoming flagbearer, forcing him to launch an independent bid in 2024.
Pointing to his long career in both domestic and global leadership, Kyerematen argued that his credentials extend far beyond party politics.
“In 1994 I was listed as one of the 100 global leaders in the world by Time magazine. And I was listed amongst other individuals, Bill Gates was one of them, Jeffrey Sachs was one of them, John F. Kennedy Jr. was one of them, Condoleezza Rice was one of them… So it’s not just about my record in NPP,” he disclosed.
He also noted that in 2013, African heads of state unanimously endorsed him as the continent’s candidate for Director-General of the World Trade Organization, one of the top four leadership roles in global governance.
Although his 2024 presidential run fell short, Kyerematen made clear he is not stepping away from the political stage.
“I’m working on making sure that I consolidate my political path which I have been involved in. I’m not sure that I can put out now what that path would be. But I think that I still would like to help with the governance of this country in a more significant way than before,” he said when asked about what he’s working on now.
Pressed on whether he intends to contest the presidency again, his response was direct: “Yes, definitely. In fact, that I can put out, that I’ll run again. Which vehicle I use, that is, you know, but of course the Almighty God has the final say…But be that as it may, that’s my interest and my desire. Yes. Because I think that the country will greatly benefit from my experience, my exposure and my network around the world, and my vision particularly for Africa.”
While he avoided committing to a specific platform or political vehicle for 2028, Kyerematen framed his future candidacy as one anchored in national renewal and continental leadership. He insisted that Ghana is at a point where it requires leaders who not only understand the domestic landscape but can also elevate the country’s role across Africa and globally.
“In spite of whatever you say about any of them, [past presidents] have served. Now if you scope the country right now and look at other people who… will be able to not just build on the track record of our previous leaders but actually more importantly now take Ghana to lead, not just the country but to lead the continent into a future of prosperity, of stability, of peace, of security, then obviously I think I come up on the radar,” he said.

The 11-year-old suffered iron burns for losing his pen
A 25-year-old cook has pleaded not guilty to causing harm to her 11-year-old son after appearing before the Ho Circuit Court.
The accused, Jemima Kwaku, a resident of Ho, is said to have inflicted severe burns on her son with a heated iron as punishment for losing his pen at school.
The accused is further reported by asaaseradio.com to have committed the act after questioning her son about the whereabouts of a pen she is said to have purchased for him.
The prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Noah Amuzu, told the presiding judge, Abdul Hakeem, that Jemima became angry when she realised her son no longer had the pen she had bought for him.
The boy explained that a classmate had borrowed it but forgot to return it, adding that he would collect it the next day.
Incensed by her son’s behavior, she is further reported to have locked him in the bedroom, where she plugged in a pressing iron.
When it became hot, she pressed it onto the boy’s belly, chest, lips, shoulders, backside, and other parts of his body.
The court heard that the accused later warned the boy not to tell anyone about the incident.
The matter came to the attention of the police when the victim was approached at school by his teacher, who noticed he had become quiet, an unusual behavior for the child. The boy then opened up and informed his teacher about the incident.
The teacher, in turn, reported the matter to the headmaster, who alerted the police.
The accused was arrested in July, when the incident occurred, and admitted in her statement to inflicting the wounds on her son following her arrest.
Her son, on the other hand, was taken to a medical facility for urgent treatment and is now in the care of social workers, asaaseradio.com reports.
Meanwhile, the accused has pleaded not guilty and has been remanded into prison custody until August 19, 2025.

Ghana is mourning the loss of Adelheid Babatz Nyarko London, a remarkable woman who transitioned from a celebrated career in midwifery to law, only to pass away months after being called to the Bar in 2025.
Adelheid, who previously served as a senior midwife at St. Michael’s Catholic Hospital in Kumasi, made history as the first female lawyer in her family and the first Ghana Health Service midwife to successfully cross over into legal practice.
Her journey was one of resilience and reinvention. After decades of service in healthcare, she pursued her passion for law, eventually qualifying as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Ghana earlier this year.
In May 2025, she marked her achievement with an inspiring post that captured her confidence and multifaceted identity:
“Allow me to reintroduce myself… The face of success, the mind of a mogul, the heart of a queen, the blueprint, the powerhouse, the CEO, the midwife, the grandma, the teacher, the Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Ghana, Adelheid Babatz Nyarko Esq… Bow accordingly.”
Her words reflected both her pride and the significance of her achievement, not only for herself but for countless women balancing ambition, family, and service.
Unfortunately, Adelheid’s inspiring journey was cut short after a brief illness, leaving behind colleagues, family, and admirers who celebrated her extraordinary accomplishments.
The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu the second on Sunday, August 17, 2025, observed the sixth Akwasidae festival, marked in black and brown attire without the usual display of ornaments, in honor of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.
The solemn commemoration, traditionally referred to as Akwasidie Tuntum or Kuntunkuni Dae, symbolized the kingdom’s collective mourning following the Queen Mother’s passing.
Chiefs, queen mothers, and subjects of the Asante Kingdom converged at the Manhyia Palace clad in black and brown cloths, refraining from the customary gold adornments that often highlight the grandeur of the festival.
The Akwasidae festival, which occurs every 40 days in line with the Akan calendar, coincided with the death of the Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who passed away earlier this month.
Her One-Week observance, a significant step in Akan funeral rites, will be Thursday, August 21, 2025.
The somber tone of the celebration served as a reminder of the Queen Mother’s pivotal role in the Asante traditional hierarchy.

Cadman Mills is a brother of the late former President John Evans Atta Mills
Cadman Mills, brother of the late former President John Evans Atta Mills, has weighed in on calls from two foreign legal bodies: the Bar Council of England and Wales (BCEW) and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA), for the reinstatement of suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo.
Sharing his view on the development, Cadman Mills said the letter should have been returned to its authors and marked as ‘irreceivable’.
‘You can’t tell us what to do’ – Online reactions as UK lawyers ‘order’ Mahama to reinstate CJ
He described the tone of the letter as disrespectful, stating that such behavior must neither be accepted nor tolerated.
Mills went on to critique the grammar of the letter, asserting that it contained several errors — particularly highlighting its use of the phrase ‘immediately and without delay,’ which he described as tautological.
“‘IMMEDIATELY AND WITHOUT DELAY’ is a tad tautological but must be expected from ‘whom that must be obeyed.’ The letter should have been returned as ‘irreceivable’ for its unacceptably disrespectful tone,” he wrote on X on Sunday, August 17, 2025.
Cadman Mills’ comment was in reaction to a strongly worded letter from the Deputy Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, who rebuked the UK Bar Council and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association over what he described as “colonialist-induced insults.”
In a statement addressed to the two legal associations, Dr Apaak described their demand as “impudent” and “baseless,” stressing that Ghana is a sovereign nation governed by its constitution, not foreign institutions.
“Ghanaians will not tolerate such nonsensical colonialist-induced insults, disguised as demands, from you. Never! You cannot order our President to ‘immediately and without delay reinstate the Chief Justice of Ghana. Such impudence!” he wrote.
‘Ghanaians will not tolerate such nonsensical colonialist-induced insults’ – Apaak to UK Bar Council, Commonwealth lawyers
According to him, President Mahama’s actions regarding the matter have been lawful and consistent with constitutional provisions, dismissing any suggestion of wrongdoing.
Dr Apaak maintained that Ghana is not a “lawless banana republic,” emphasising that the president is answerable only to the people of Ghana and the nation’s constitution.
He further accused the associations of being misled by “collaborators” into issuing a statement that could tarnish their credibility.
“Your collaborators have deceived you into damaging your reputation with these baseless demands. Withdraw your unjustified statement and apologise to Ghanaians,” the statement added.

World Bank warns against BoG’s ‘excessive’ intervention in foreign exchange market
A World Bank report has also noted that the government is focused on fiscal discipline, macroeconomic stability, and growth, remaining committed to institutional and legislative reforms.
“Fully implementing these reforms is crucial to realising the benefits of poverty reduction and inclusive growth. The reform agenda is expected to bring macro-financial stability while gradually opening fiscal space for pro-poor and pro-growth investments.
“Delays or partial implementation of reforms pose significant risks, including renewed fiscal pressures, diminished investor confidence, and compromised service delivery,” the report noted.

Work has finally resumed on the long-abandoned Pokuase–Nsawam stretch of the Accra–Kumasi Highway, bringing relief to commuters and transport operators who have endured years of hardship on the busy corridor.
Construction crews officially returned to the site over the weekend and have since been working daily to recover lost time.
The resumption follows mounting pressure from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), which had threatened to stage protests over the government’s delay in addressing the project.
Reports indicate that the government has now settled outstanding payments to the contractor, paving the way for the works to continue.
The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, confirmed this in an interview with Accra-based Class 91.3 FM.
The Pokuase–Nsawam stretch is a critical link on the Accra–Kumasi highway, and its rehabilitation is expected to ease traffic congestion, reduce travel time, and improve road safety for thousands of daily users.

The Bank of Ghana has given its approval for a new partnership between local credit reporting agency XDS Data (Ghana) Ltd and US-based Nova Credit Inc.
The collaboration was announced by the central bank in the Credit Reporting report for the year 2024.
The collaboration is set to address the “credit invisibility” challenge faced by Ghanaians living abroad, who often struggle to access essential financial services due to a lack of recognised credit history in their new country.
This partnership will enable Ghanaians residing in countries like the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia to have their credit histories from Ghana securely shared with lenders, landlords, and other service providers in their host countries.
According to the Bank of Ghana, this initiative is a crucial step towards mitigating the financial barriers that mobile individuals face.
It will empower Ghanaians abroad to qualify for essential services such as bank accounts, credit cards, rental agreements, and mobile phone plans, which are often out of reach without a local credit score.
Under the agreement, XDS Data Ghana Limited will serve as the data contributor and verification source.
The company will securely share the credit information of Ghanaian individuals, with their permission, with Nova Credit, which specialises in translating international credit data for use by financial institutions and other service providers globally.
This cross-border credit reporting service is expected to significantly improve the financial inclusion of Ghanaians in the diaspora, allowing them to establish a financial foothold and participate more fully in the economies of their new homes.

Kwame Pianim, a renowned statesman and New Patriotic Party (NPP) elder, has quizzed the critics of the John Mahama-led government, berating them for their failure to tackle illegal mining commonly known as galamsey.
He noted that the NDC government is barely eight months into its four-year term, and the criticism levelled against them so far in their fight against galamsey is unfair.
The month-long art exhibition will honour the 8 people who lost their lives on August 6
In a show of artistic tribute, three leading cultural organisations in Ghana have joined forces to launch a month-long art exhibition in honour of eight individuals who lost their lives in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.

“In honouring the memories of our gallant compatriots who, in line of national duty, in a purposeful war against our common enemy, Galamsey, fell at the feet of death, the Creative Arts Agency, the Ghana Museum and Monuments Board and the Ghana Association of Visual Artists shall host a special month-long art exhibition dubbed ‘Tributes X’pressed by BrushStrokes & more,’” the invitation read.
The Creative Arts Agency is thus inviting interested artists to participate, urging them to reach out for submission guidelines and further instructions.
A Flashback of Dark Wednesday
On August 6, 2025, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence, was among eight people who tragically died in a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9EH helicopter crash in the Adansi-Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.
The aircraft had departed Accra at around 9:12 AM en route to Obuasi for an official anti-illegal mining event when it disappeared from the radar and was later found engulfed in flames. All on board perished.
Among the other victims were the Minister of Environment, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Limuna Mohammed Muniru; NDC Vice Chairman, Samuel Sarpong; former parliamentary candidate, Samuel Aboagye, and three air force crew members.
The crash has been deemed one of Ghana’s deadliest air disasters in recent memory. It triggered immediate national mourning, with President John Mahama declaring a three-day mourning period and ordering flags to be flown at half-mast.
Investigations are underway. Authorities have recovered flight data and cockpit voice recorders and have invited international experts to assist in the probe. A Board of Inquiry has also been established, with Ghanaian and American experts expected to work together for transparency and accuracy.
Islamic funerals for Dr Murtala Mohammed and Limuna Mohammed Muniru were held on August 10 at the State House Forecourt in Accra, attended by President Mahama, the First Lady, ECOWAS dignitaries, and the President of Sierra Leone.
A general funeral for all eight was later held on August 15 with burial ceremonies for the remaining six.

Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah is the Deputy Minister of Health
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has, in a new directive, cautioned the Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah, against presenting herself as a professor.
According to GTEC, the commission insists that the minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan, is not a professor, despite her claim that she was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Surgery by the University of Utah in the United States, citinewsroom.com reports.
GTEC demands proof of PhD from Hassan Ayariga over alleged misuse of ‘Doctor’ title
In a letter addressed to the Chief of Staff at the Presidency, GTEC reportedly stated that, as part of its efforts to verify the claim, it requested Dr Ayensu-Danquah to provide documents to support her professorship title by August 11, 2025.
The documents she submitted, GTEC added, showed some inconsistencies.
A letter from the University of Utah, signed by Prof W Bradford Rockwell, Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Surgery, confirmed that Dr Ayensu-Danquah was appointed as an Adjunct Assistant Professor, not Assistant Professor as claimed by her solicitors.
However, GTEC argues that Dr Ayensu-Danquah’s omission of the term “adjunct” from her professorship title has the potential to mislead the public.
It explained that the role of Adjunct Assistant Professor is a non-tenure track position which, under Ghana’s academic framework, equates roughly to a part-time lecturer — not a senior lecturer, and certainly not a professor.
GTEC nabs Nyarkotey for operating a University without accreditation
“Based on the above, the Commission concludes that Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah does not hold the title of Professor in any capacity,” the letter is quoted as saying by citinewsroom.com.
The commission has, therefore, cautioned her against using the title of professor, warning that failure to comply will leave them with no choice but to pursue legal action on the grounds of public deception.

Nobody knew that this ordinary evening would become a historic marker; the night Zinedine Zidane announced himself to the world.
In the early 1990s, French football was adrift. After the golden glow of Michel Platini’s era in the 1980s, the national team had fallen into inconsistency and heartbreak.
Missing the 1990 and 1994 World Cups was unthinkable for a nation with such footballing heritage. The team needed new life, a new leader, someone who could carry the weight of expectation on his shoulders.
In Bordeaux, a quiet midfielder of Algerian descent was waiting for his chance. Zinedine Zidane was already earning respect in Ligue 1 with Girondins de Bordeaux, but outside France, he was virtually unknown. He was talented, yes, but untested at the highest level.
That August evening, the French team lined up with established names but little inspiration. The Czech Republic, newly formed after the split of Czechoslovakia, played with hunger and discipline. They raced into a 2–0 lead, silencing the home fans and deepening the sense of crisis.
On the bench, coach Aimé Jacquet looked down his line. It was a friendly, why not try something bold? He called for Zidane. The 22-year-old rose, jogged onto the pitch, and stepped into history.
What followed was pure theatre. Within minutes of his introduction, Zidane drifted into space just outside the penalty area. The ball rolled to him, and with one swing of his right foot, he sent it crashing into the net. The crowd roared. Finally, a spark.
But Zidane wasn’t finished. Later in the match, he found the ball, this time on his head. He glided past defenders with that signature robustness and buried a second goal. From despair, France were level. From anonymity, Zidane had arrived.

The match ended 2–2. For the statisticians, it was just another friendly draw. For those in the stands, it felt like prophecy. Something about the way Zidane carried himself, calm, almost detached, yet devastatingly effective, suggested greatness.
A star is born
Football has a way of whispering its future through moments like these. That night, France’s supporters saw a player who combined the grace of Platini with something uniquely his own; an artistry that turned the pitch into a canvas. Zidane wasn’t just effective; he was mesmerising.
His double on debut didn’t transform France overnight, but it planted a seed. Within two years, Zidane would be at the heart of a new-look French side building toward glory.
Four years later, on home soil, he would score twice in a World Cup final, cementing his status as a national hero. And it all began on August 17, 1994.
Today, Zidane’s name sits alongside football’s immortals. Fans remember the volley in the 2002 Champions League final, the headbutt in 2006, the elegance that defined an era.
But every legend has an origin story. For Zidane, it wasn’t in Turin or Madrid. It was in Bordeaux, on a humid August night, wearing the blue of France for the very first time.
The goals he scored that evening were more than equalisers. They were a declaration: a new leader had arrived, one who would inspire a generation and restore France to the pinnacle of world football.
Ghana international Ibrahim Osman put up a good performance for AJ Auxerre on Sunday afternoon, helping the team to defeat Lorient 1-0 in their opening match of the 2025/26 French Ligue 1 season.
The winger who joined from Brighton & Hove Albion on loan in the summer started for the French club on the matchday, operating on the wings.
In the game played at Stade de l’Abbe-Dechamps, both teams put up a good performance in the first half, but neither side could score before halftime.
However, after the break, AJ Auxerre upped their game and managed to score the game’s only goal in the 43rd minute.
Ghana’s Ibrahim Osman was in the thick of affairs, showing his quality and setting up Lassine Sinayoko to power the team to victory.
Auxerre could have made it 2-0 in the 70th minute, but a penalty awarded to the team was wasted by Josue Casimir.
Despite a late surge by Lorient, the team could not score and suffered a narrow defeat to the opponent.
Ibrahim Osman, 20, played 82 minutes of the game today before making way for Rudy Matondo.
He will be playing a key role for AJ Auxerre throughout the 2025/26 football season.
President John Dramani Mahama has departed Ghana for an official two-nation visit to Japan and Singapore, aimed at strengthening bilateral ties, boosting trade and investment, and advancing shared development goals.
The trip underscores Ghana’s commitment to fostering international partnerships under its Resetting Ghana agenda.
In Japan, President Mahama will participate in the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IX), where he is scheduled to deliver a keynote address on Promoting Trade and Investment during a plenary session.
He will also headline the Ghana Presidential Investment Forum, showcasing the country’s economic potential to Japanese investors. High-profile bilateral meetings are planned with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, senior officials from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) to discuss infrastructure, technical cooperation, and enhanced trade relations.
The President’s itinerary then shifts to Singapore for a three-day state visit, where he will meet President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
Key engagements include participation in the Africa-Singapore Business Forum and an investment-focused address to promote Ghana’s reforms and private-sector opportunities. The visit aims to expand market access for Ghanaian exports while attracting Singaporean investment in technology, finance, and human capital development.
A statemnent signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President, emphasised the strategic importance of the tour: “These visits seek to attract investment, broaden market access for Ghanaian goods and services, and mobilise technical and development cooperation.”
President Mahama’s delegation will depart Accra on Sunday, August 17, 2025, with expectations high for tangible outcomes that could bolster Ghana’s economic prospects.
Sofia, Aug 17 (BTA/GNA) – A multidisciplinary medical team has conducted one of few large-scale and costly studies in Bulgaria involving next-generation sequencing (NGS), the most advanced DNA analysis technology available. The study builds on the results of major international registry trials, which were conducted without such detailed gene-specific analysis, according to a press release this week from Queen Joanna – ISUL Hospital in Sofia.
The results of the study have been accepted for publication in the prestigious New York-based journal Clinical Genitourinary Cancer, published by Elsevier, which ranks in the first quartile for oncology-related scientific metrics.
The aim of the study, which involved over 200 patients with advanced prostate cancer, was to determine how different gene mutations affect the efficacy of modern targeted therapies using PARP inhibitors. The results show that the effect of treatment directly depends on the type of genetic alterations.
The study was carried out by a team of oncologists, urologists, geneticists, pathologists, and bioinformaticians. The first and senior authors are Georgi Dimitrov, MD, an oncologist at the Medical Oncology Clinic of Queen Joanna – ISUL Hospital, and Elenko Popov, MD, a urologist from the hospital’s Urology Clinic.
“What we proved with our study is that even though some mutations fall under the same umbrella, different driver mutations lead to different outcomes. For example, effector-type mutations show very good results, while sensor-type mutations leave room for improvement, even though both are classified under the common HRD status and are approved for treatment with this medication,” explained Dr Dimitrov.
“Our study is a pioneering effort for Bulgaria and demonstrates that high-tech and high-cost methods can be successfully applied here as well, putting the country on the map of modern precision oncology,” added Dr Popov.
Oliver Barker-Vormawor is a social activist and a lawyer
Private legal practitioner and social activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has called out the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), raising serious concerns about the potential dangers associated with its approach to targeting individuals who use ‘unearned’ professor titles.
According to him, the commission’s recent action is problematic and risks undermining its credibility, which he warned could jeopardise the country’s tertiary education oversight and academic system.
Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah does not hold the title of ‘professor’ in any capacity – GTEC
Barker-Vormawor, in his view, explained that GTEC is mandated to strictly regulate tertiary institutions, monitor academic standards in the country, and verify the certificates and degrees of individuals when a formal request is made for such a task.
“The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission is supposed to be the guardian of academic quality and standards in this country. Instead, it has become the subject of controversy for claiming the power to decide who can or cannot use the title ‘Professor.’
“This is deeply problematic. GTEC’s mandate under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act is straightforward: regulate tertiary institutions, monitor academic standards, and verify certificates and degrees when formally requested,” he wrote on Facebook on Sunday, August 17, 2025.
The activist suggested that GTEC may be overstepping its mandate, noting it has no authority to judge professorial titles conferred in other jurisdictions.
“Nowhere does the law empower it to sit in judgment on professorial titles, especially when those titles are conferred by universities outside Ghana. And for good reason.
“At the heart of this debate is a very simple truth: there is no single international system for comparing professorships. In the United States, both tenure-track and non-tenure-track appointments are addressed as ‘Professor.’ In the UK, ‘Professor’ is reserved for the most senior appointments. In France or South Africa, the terminology differs again. These are local traditions, not global rules. To suggest that GTEC can apply a universal test is not just wrong, it misinforms the public.
“It is one thing to have never been appointed a professor at all. But it is entirely different, and dangerous, for a regulator to pretend that an international standard exists when it does not. Even within the same country, the distinction between tenure-track and non-tenure-track has nothing to do with whether a person is addressed as ‘Professor.’ GTEC’s claim to the contrary is uninformed,” he added.

Barker-Vormawor cautioned GTEC against actions that could harm its reputation and the academic system it oversees.
“… Ghana deserves a regulator that acts with rigour, transparency, and fairness. If GTEC continues to stretch its mandate, operate without clear standards, and chase headlines instead of doing its job, it will damage not only its own reputation but also the very system it was created to protect,” he stressed.

For a moment, it felt as though Crystal Palace had stunned Stamford Bridge during their first Premier League game of the 2025/26 season against Chelsea, on Sunday, August 17, 2025.
Eberechi Eze, elegant as ever over a dead ball, smashed a free-kick beyond Robert Sánchez in the 13th minute, sparking wild celebrations among the travelling Palace fans.
It seemed the perfect script: their talisman, perhaps in his final outing for the club, striking the blow that would humble Chelsea.
But as the cheers still rang, referee Darren England pointed for an indirect free kick in Chelsea’s favour.
VAR confirmed the call, and Eze’s strike was chalked off. Confusion rippled through the stands. What had just happened?
The law behind the decision
The answer lies in a little-known amendment to football’s laws introduced by IFAB in 2019. The rule states:
“When a free kick is being taken, if an attacking player is less than 1 metre from a wall consisting of three or more defending players, an indirect free kick is awarded to the defending team.”
The purpose of this law is to prevent attackers from deliberately infiltrating the wall to block defenders’ view or create disruption. It was designed to restore fairness and stop chaotic jostling every time a free-kick was taken near goal.
The key detail in Eze’s goal
On closer inspection, Palace defender Marc Guehi was standing less than one metre away from Chelsea’s three-man wall as Eze struck the ball. Though Guehi didn’t touch it, his positioning was enough to trigger the law.
As soon as the ball crossed the line, VAR reviewed the situation. The footage was clear: Guehi’s proximity to the wall breached the one-metre rule. The referee had no choice but to disallow the goal.
For Palace supporters, it felt cruel that their team’s moment of brilliance fell victim to one of the game’s most obscure clauses.
Eze, too, had reason to feel aggrieved. The 27-year-old has long been Palace’s heartbeat, and this could well have been his farewell moment in red and blue. Instead, the lawbook intervened.
Crystal Palace and Eze have been robbed there.
Another season of corruption for teams outside the top 6 and another season of unbalanced VAR ahead 🙄#CHECRYpic.twitter.com/dUz4fosTqF
