Stakeholders petition president to renew tenure of Principal.

Gongnia (U/E), Jan 2, GNA – Naba Jacob Adanigna, chief of Gongnia community, students, and alumni of St.John Bosco College of Education in the Upper East Region has petitioned President Akufo-Addo to renew tenure of Professor Joseph Amikuzuno as the principal of the school.

The petition, presented to the President through Mr Joseph Adongo, the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Chief Executive, highlighted the significant transformation the College had experienced under the leadership of Professor Amikuzuno’s, which they believed warranted the extension of his term.

The petitioners expressed concern over what they described as “unilateral efforts by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETEC)” to appoint a new principal for the College without involving the Governing Council or engaging in broader consultations with key stakeholders, including the local community.

“We wish to register our displeasure at the turn of events, especially when it concerns a principal with visible evidence of progressive developmental projects and prospects to elevate the college further,” the petition alleged.

The petition further alleged that the GTEC Chairman “extended the tenure of retired principals with minimal impact on the college’s progress, and it was unfair to replace Professor Amikuzuno whom it described as young and hardworking, young man who is also a native of the region”.

The community opposed the removal or replacement of Prof. Amikuzuno while he still had the potential to serve another term.

They emphasized that the reasons provided by GTEC do not outweigh the principal’s accomplishments and dedication.

In highlighting some few achievements of Prof. Amikuzuno they said he succeeded in an out-of-court settlement of a 42-year-old land dispute, constructed a protective fence wall for the college, and developed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the college and the community aimed at fostering mutual development.

They said the professor has also introduced new academic programmes, brought onboard a remedial programme that was helping students who would not have gotten the opportunity to continue their education, transformed the College Basic School to a model school, increased the staff strength by over 50 percent, completed the college auditorium that stalled since 2012.

These efforts, among other key achievements the petitioners argue, were clear indicators of the progress under his leadership and the tangible benefits to both the institution and the surrounding community.

The people of Gongnia, therefore, strongly urged President Akufo-Addo to renew the principal’s tenure, recognizing the positive changes brought about during his administration and the bright prospects for the future of St. John Bosco College of Education.

Following their victories in the recent Local Government Elections, newly elected female leaders are encouraging other women to pursue leadership roles despite the challenges.

Mtwara Ms Rukia Myachi, chairperson of Myegedi village in Mkunwa ward, emphasised the importance of resilience. “I faced many obstacles, from stereotypes to lack of support,” she shared.

“But I persevered. This proves that women can lead effectively. Don’t let challenges deter you. Step up and take on leadership roles to represent other women’s voices.”

Kasuru’s chairperson of Tabirugu village, Ms Leokadeki Koku, another successful candidate in the election, encouraged women to support one another in their political journeys. “Unity among women is crucial. We need to back each other up and push for gender equality in leadership,” Ms Amina said. She also mentioned the need for more mentorship programmes to guide young women entering politics.

As she continues to serve in her new role, she is committed to mentoring the next generation of female leaders, ensuring that more women follow in their footsteps and break through the barriers that still exist.

Tanzania’s Gender Networking Programme (TGNP) board chairperson, Ms Gemma Akilimali, said that this year’s local government polls have seen a remarkable increase in women’s involvement in the electoral process, taking over leadership roles even in areas that some of them had never been governed by women.

Ms Akilimali made the remarks during the 2024 Women in Leadership Summit, which, among other things, reflected on the 30 years after the Beijing Conference.

“I am delighted that our forum is being held after the local government election, where this year women were highly motivated to participate in the election process… Despite the challenges, many women have secured leadership positions in some areas, where women attained chairperson positions in local government for the very first time since these roles were established,” she said.

Ms Akilimali added: “This is something to be proud of and to celebrate; approximately 14 women from various parts of the country have secured the chairmanship positions.”.

She said this year’s forum is guided by the theme: “Celebrate, Reflect, and Envision for Beijing +30: Her Vision 2050,” saying there will also be the launch of a book documenting the Beijing journey and the presentation of awards to encourage women who have excelled in various roles.

Ms Akilimali called upon women to use the forum to build and strengthen networks and partnerships in advancing and solidifying the women’s agenda to bring transformative changes to their lives as individuals and as a society in general.

TGNP executive director, Ms Lilian Liundi, said that Tanzania has made significant strides 30 years after the Beijing Conference.

She said as of January 2019, the country ranked 2nd in East Africa with 36.9 percent of parliamentary seats held by women.

“This achievement is not just a statistic; it is a reflection of our resilience and strength as women united in purpose. We have witnessed groundbreaking moments, our first female president, Samia Suluhu Hassan, and two powerful female speakers of the Parliament, Anne Makinda and Dr Tulia Ackson,” she said.

Ms Liundi cited Mkunwa Ward, in which, in the just-concluded local government election, almost 50 percent of hamlet chairpersons are women.

She said the achievements have been made possible through the leadership project that was being implemented by TGNP in the area with support from UN Women.

She further said that despite the progress, the number of women in local government is still low, noting that only 6.5 percent of women are councillors, adding that after the 2019 local government election, women made up only 2.1 percent of elected village chairpersons, 6.7 percent of elected hamlet chairpersons, and 12.6 percent of elected street chairpersons.

“These are very low numbers. We have to do something, especially at the local government.”

She said that despite the milestone, there are still challenges that women need to confront with unwavering courage and determination, such as the barriers they face, cultural biases, economic disparities, and systemic discrimination.

“Together we can dismantle these obstacles and advocate for policies that empower women at all levels of decision-making. Our voices are powerful tools for change. Let us envision a future where you and I lead with confidence in every sphere of life,” she said.

She called upon women to work towards increasing their participation in politics and leadership roles while fostering a supportive environment that nurtures their aspirations.

However, in a sudden turn of events, the 2010 BBC African Player of the Year was seen sobbing as he sang gospel tunes.

Gyan also issued a stern warning to fans and citizens, urging them to refrain from speaking ill of him, adding that there would be consequences for anyone who did so.

The retired striker remains Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances. His six goals at the FIFA World Cup make him the top-scoring African player in the tournament’s history.

In June 2023, Gyan officially retired from professional football after an illustrious 18-year career.

Asante Kotoko legend Rev. Osei Kofi shared an intriguing story about how his father’s divorce case led him to leave Hearts of Oak and join their arch-rivals, Asante Kotoko.

Osei Kofi narrated that his father needed £30 to settle his divorce from a woman who had mistreated him.

He recalled that his father informed him about the divorce while he was in the Hearts of Oak camp, shortly after leading the team to victory in the 1964 league.

“I didn’t like how the woman treated my father. He used to eat leftovers from what she sold in the market. My father had become old and weak, so he stayed home. I was in the Hearts of Oak camp when my dad came and told me he wanted a divorce, and the court demanded £30,” he said during an interview on Channel One TV.

It turned out that his father worked as a driver for a Kotoko patron who offered to pay the divorce fee if Osei Kofi joined the Porcupines.

“He was a driver for Mr. Adusei, a Kotoko patron. After Hearts won the league, someone told Mr. Adusei, ‘Do you know your driver’s son is Osei Kofi? Why don’t you pay the £30 so Osei can go to Kotoko?’

“So, I was there when my father told me the story, and I decided to go to Kotoko because of the woman. I left Hearts of Oak without informing anyone because it was an amateur league, and we weren’t under contracts or salaries. That night, I went to Kumasi. The £30 was given to my father to finalize the divorce, which saved him,” he recounted.

In his prime, Osei Kofi was known as the “Wizard Dribbler” for his quick feet and ability to bypass defenders.

He spent most of his career at Asante Kotoko, achieving legendary status and helping the club win consecutive league titles in 1965 and 1966.

The UN refugee agency, UNHCR, and the Government of Malawi say they have recorded around 2,000 people who crossed the border from Mozambique, and another 1,000 who entered Eswatini in the past week fleeing the post-election chaos in the neighbouring country.

UNHCR said Tuesday that it was deeply alarmed by the situation in Mozambique, where post-election unrest has forced thousands to flee their homes, especially after the country’s Constitutional Counsel (CC) confirmed on December 23 that the ruling Frelimo party won the disputed presidential election held in October.

Presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, supported by the Podemos party, rejected the results proclaimed by the highest court in the land, and his supporters, along with other opposition parties, have been organising protests that are violently thwarted by the police.

Decide Electoral Platform, an NGO, says some 277 have been killed since October 21, 2024, and another 586 have gunshot wounds from the protests.

The UN agency said some camps for the internally displaced are overcrowded, with 1,000 people sharing a single latrine, sparking fears of disease outbreak and spread.

In Eswatini, the Malindza refugee reception centre, originally designed for 250 people, is now housing more than 1,000.

According to Chansa Kapaya, UNHCR’s regional director for Southern Africa, the refugees and civilians are facing immense risks, losing their livelihoods and relying on humanitarian assistance.

“While we are grateful for the generosity of Malawi and Eswatini, immediate support is crucial to tackle the worsening crisis and prevent further suffering,” she said.

On Monday, outgoing President Filipe Nyusi ruled out possible foreign mediation to resolve the post-election crisis in the country, advocating dialogue and local solutions without “schemes, arrangements and interests.”

During a meeting with leaders of the political parties with representation in the next parliament, President Nyusi said that “the solutions for Mozambique can only be found by us Mozambicans.”

Nyusi met with the leader of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) Ossufo Momade, president of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) Lutero Simango, and Frelimo’s Daniel Chapo, the declared winner of the presidential vote.

The Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (Podemos), which backed Mondlane, was represented by Albino Forquilha, while the extra-parliamentary New Democracy (ND) was represented by Salomão Muchanga.

According to the CC, Mr Chapo won the presidential contest with 65.17 percent of the votes, followed by Mr Mondlane with 24.19 percent of the votes. Renamo’s Momade got 6.62 percent and MDM leader Lutero Simango managed 4.02 percent of the vote.

Last week, UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed concern about the post-election violence, which has resulted in the loss of lives, and the destruction of property, and called all Mozambicans to seek a peaceful resolution, in a constructive manner.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially designated its leadership for the Minority in Ghana’s 9th Parliament, appointing Alexander Afenyo-Markin as the Minority Leader.

This strategic move aims to strengthen the party’s legislative effectiveness following its transition from the Majority to the Minority in Parliament, as reported by Citi Newsroom.

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, born on May 27, 1978, in Winneba, Central Region, has been serving as the MP for Effutu since 2013.

He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Buckingham and a Master’s degree in International Politics and Security Studies from the University of Bradford.

Prior to his political career, Afenyo-Markin worked as a Principal Postal Officer at Ghana Post and later as a legal practitioner.

His tenure in Parliament has been marked by active participation in various committees, including the Finance Committee and the Defence and Interior Committee.

The NPP’s National Council, led by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, finalized these appointments to ensure robust leadership in Parliament.

This decision follows the party’s recent electoral performance, which resulted in a shift from holding the Majority to becoming the Minority in the legislative assembly.

The newly appointed leadership is expected to play a crucial role in steering the party’s legislative agenda, fostering unity among party members, and effectively engaging with the Majority on national issues.

Their collective experience and expertise are anticipated to enhance the NPP’s contributions to parliamentary proceedings and national governance.

In the coming days, the NPP plans to convene a meeting with its elected MPs to outline their roles and responsibilities, ensuring a coordinated approach as the 9th Parliament commences.

Trust Jesus foundation puts smiles on faces of mental patients

Accra, Dec 26, GNA – Trust Jesus Foundation (TJF) has feted patients of the Pantang Psychiatric Hospital as part of efforts to bring mental health into the national conscience.

The exercise, which coincided with the fifth anniversary celebration of the foundation, offered the patients a sense of acceptance and belonging as equal members of the Ghanaian society.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Thursday on the sidelines of the occasion, the Founder and President of the foundation, Ms. Mary Wormenor, observed the need for mental patients to be encouraged through such gestures since it had a positive impact on their health.

“In putting a smile on the faces of mental patients, we help them to understand that society loves them and sees them as part of the community irrespective of their situations.” Ms. Wormenor indicated.

She therefore called on the government to prioritise mental health care issues and implement the Mental Health Act 2012, Act 846 which sought to improve Ghana’s mental health delivery .

“We are also calling on the government to invest more in the training of psychiatric specialists in Ghana,” she said.

In a talk during the programme, the Health Coordinator of TJF, Mr. Seth Wormenor, asked Ghanaians to be observant in order to detect mental challenges which early diagnosis resulted early healing.

Mr. Wormenor, also the Mental Health Coordinator, Adanse South District in the Asante Region, suggested that persons who were developing mental challenges might not know until others detect it hence the need to lookout for changes in the lifestyle.

Receiving some of the donated items, a Principal Nursing Officer at the Pnntang Hospital, Mrs. Vivian Anim Bonnah, said such gestures as caring for mental patients was very necessary because some of them had been abandoned by family and friends.

“Some of them don’t get visitors at all and it makes make them feel rejected.

Such visits make them see new faces and reassure them of the fact that there are persons who still had them at heart which has a profound mental and psychological impact on them,” she indicated.

Mrs. Bonnah who is also an Executive Member of Mental Health Nurses Group National, appealed to the government to invest more in mental health institutions which will go a long way to take away the many challenges facing the sector and improve upon mental health care delivery in the nation.

She observed that even though mental Healthcare was supposed to be free, it had rather become more expensive with patients and their relatives, struggling with high costs of drugs and other necessities.

This, she indicated, was because the quota given to psychiatric health institutions and units in the nation was not enough.

The Principal Nursing Officer asked that mental health care be taken seriously “because it could be anybody tomorrow and that without mental healthcare there is no healthcare.”

As part of the exercise and anniversary, the foundation provided the patients with Jollof Rice with Chicken with assorted drinks.

Members of the group also had a procession through some principal streets of Accra with placards that educated the public about mental health.

Some deserving members of the association were honoured for their selfless service.

Ghana embarks on seamless transition to 9th Parliament

Accra, Jan 2, GNA – Ghana is poised to make history as it transitions from the Eighth to the Ninth Parliament, marking a significant milestone in the country’s democratic journey.

This transition is based on Article 112(4) and 113(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which stipulates that the Eighth Parliament will stand dissolved, and the Ninth Parliament will be inaugurated on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

Addressing the Parliamentary Press Corps in Parliament on Thursday, ahead of inauguration of the Ninth Parliament and the swearing-in of the President-elect, Madam Gifty Twum Ampofo, Chairperson for the Dissolution and Inauguration Planning Committee, said the country had demonstrated its commitment to democratic principles, having successfully navigated seven Parliamentary transitions since the Fourth Republic.

She said, the forthcoming transition presented an opportunity for reflection, renewal, and reaffirmation of Ghana’s democratic values.

Madam Twum Ampofo told the Press that the election of the new Speaker of Parliament was scheduled for Monday, January 6, 2025

“This election will set the tone for legislative leadership in the coming days,” she said.

She also outlined the swearing-in of new Members of Parliament-elect (MPs) and dissolution of the Eighth Parliament was scheduled from Monday, January 6 at 2300 hours to midnight.

“…The presidential inauguration is scheduled for Tuesday, January 7, 2025, this event will mark the beginning of a new chapter in Ghana’s governance and celebrate the country’s enduring democratic values,” the Committee Chairperson told the Press.

Mr Camillo Pwamang, Deputy Coordinator, Dissolution and Inauguration Committee, in his address noted that as Ghana navigated the transition, transparency and accountability were crucial.

“The media plays a vital role in bridging the gap between the institution of parliament and the people, promoting understanding, unity, and accountability,” he said.

He called for a collective effort and commitment from the Media to help Ghana build on past achievements and address pressing issues such as economic growth, education, healthcare, and infrastructure development.

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has submitted the Expenditure in Advance of Appropriation for the period January to March 2025 to Parliament.

The proposed 2025 mini-budget, amounting to GH¢68.1 billion, is intended to cover essential government expenses during the first quarter of the year.

This provision ensures continuity of operations pending the presentation of a full budget by the incoming administration, which will govern for the remainder of 2025.

Key areas expected to benefit from the allocation include salaries of public sector workers, statutory payments, critical infrastructure maintenance, and funding for social intervention programs.

The mini-budget serves as a constitutional requirement during a transition year to prevent fiscal disruptions.

Following its submission, Second Deputy Speaker Andrew Asiamah Amoako referred the document to the Budget and Finance Committees for detailed review. The committees are tasked with scrutinizing the figures and policies before reporting back to the House for debate and approval.

Parliament is set to reconvene later on January 2, 2025, for the Finance Minister to formally present the budget to members, after which deliberations and discussions are expected to follow.

This will work,'” he explained.

Ibrahim also praised Bagbin’s leadership, citing his ability to challenge authority and provide guidance.

“When we needed somebody to look into the eyes of Akufo-Addo and tell him the truth, nobody did it except Alban Bagbin, who said, ‘Enough of what you are doing.’ And that’s what has brought us to where we are.”

Ibrahim questioned the need to consider alternative candidates.

“So, whether you go, I’m a minority leader, he’s been a minority leader before. As a majority leader, he’s been a majority leader before. As a deputy speaker, he’s been a deputy speaker before. As a speaker, he’s been a speaker before. So, if you have such a person, why would you look for another?” he noted.

Joshua, a member of the popular Ghanaian music group Keche, has responded to King Paluta’s recent comments about them.

Recently, in an interview on the Delay Show, King Paluta stated that he will no longer collaborate with Keche on any future projects because of the attacks directed at him.

“I’m done with them. For them to not appreciate me despite what I did for them, giving you a verse for free, no! Imagine I buy a phone for you upon your request; you ask for airtime the next day, and I say I don’t have the means; then you go about telling people I’m wicked? How?” he queried.

But in a latest development, Keche Joshua has responded in an interview with ZionFelix, stating that they will not be working with King Paluta, as that is what he wants.

He also expressed disappointment over the comments Paluta made about them during the Delay interview, labeling it as disrespectful.

“He said he won’t collaborate with us again, so we’ve heard. It’s nothing, he can go. We haven’t done anything to him. I was surprised by what he said in the Delay interview, it was disrespectful.

“The team told me not to speak about it, and it’s fine. He claimed he was sick, yet he was posting other people’s songs,” Keche Joshua said.

Background

One would recall that in August 2024, Keche Joshua took to social media to criticise King Paluta for failing to promote their song, “My Father,” after their collaboration.

He questioned why Paluta shared songs from other artistes but not theirs.

Later, the other member of the group, Keche Andrew, also revealed how King Paluta had treated them poorly, even refusing to shoot a music video with them and citing illness as the reason.

Although Joshua apologised for the harsh words he used in his previous outburst, he expressed that he was still disappointed with Paluta’s actions.

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has lambasted his former teammates for not supporting him after fans turned on him for missing a crucial penalty against Uruguay during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

With teary eyes, Gyan labelled his teammates as “cowards” for not stepping up to take the penalty, indicating that his colleagues were scared in the tense moment.

Speaking during an Instagram Live session, he expressed his displeasure, claiming that his former teammates failed to defend him and left him to face the backlash alone. This, according to Gyan, fueled false narratives that tarnished his image.

“Anyone could have taken the penalty. Why would I deliberately miss it and disgrace Ghana? You were all afraid of the pressure. Everybody was scared—cowards,” he said.

“And then someone claimed they wanted to take it, but I took it. Why won’t you come out and affirm it if it’s true? You were happy to let them insult the taker. None of you came out to speak, deny it, or explain that I was the first-choice penalty taker.”

The Black Stars’ all-time top scorer further accused some of his former teammates of using his penalty miss as an opportunity to turn public opinion against him because he was the face of the team.

“The fans can say whatever they like, but you, my teammates, should have defended me. Instead, you were scared, and when they mentioned my name, you kept quiet while I faced it all alone. I was loved by the people, and yet you instigated them to speak ill of me,” Gyan added.

Gyan missed a last-minute penalty against Uruguay in the 2010 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals, denying Ghana a historic semi-final berth. Ghana eventually lost the match in a penalty shootout.

The infamous penalty miss has seemingly overshadowed Gyan’s illustrious international career, becoming one of the most remembered moments of the former footballer’s career.

Dandy Krazy, one of Zambia’s most popular musicians, has died from injuries caused by a road collision on New Year’s Eve.

The 47-year-old – real name Wesley Chibambo – was travelling in Zambia’s Kapiri Mposhi region when his car collided with a truck and a second car.

Three people died at the scene. Dandy Krazy passed away in the early hours of Thursday despite being transported to the University Teaching Hospital in capital city Lusaka for emergency surgery.

President Hakainde Hichilema was among those who paid tribute to the musician, calling him an “extraordinary artist”.

“His music and charisma touched lives far and wide, crossing all boundaries and bringing people together,” Hichilema wrote in a Facebook post.

Dandy Krazy’s daughter, Comfort, said: “Daddy you have answered the Lord’s call on Shanice’s birthday, your third born. Even in death, we will always love you Papa. I have no time to question God but agree to his will but Lord, your will hurts.”

Dandy Krazy was known for using music as a tool for political commentary.

His song Donchi Kubeba is credited with helping the Patriotic Front (PF) win the 2011 elections, ending the Movement for Multiparty Democracy’s 20-year run in power.

The song, whose title means Don’t Tell Them, lamented the unequal distribution of wealth and lack of opportunities in the country.

Former President Michael Sata, from the PF, later bestowed Dandy Krazy with the Grand Commander of the Order of Freedom.

His other songs include the hit Chintelelwe. Dandy Krazy also popularised tracks he featured on, such as Chipuba Chandi by Indi K and Temperature by Uniq.

In mourning Dandy Krazy, politician and lawyer Sakwiba Sikota wrote on his Facebook page: “There is no doubt that Dandy Crazy was a giant in the Zambian musical industry. His innovation and natural charm touched many.

He praised Dandy Krazy’s “social and political commentaries”, comparing them to artists like Bob Marley, Nina Simone, Bob Dylan, and John Lennon.

The government has announced it will assist with funeral expenses for Dandy Krazy and the others who died in the collision.

“It’s not new” – Asamoah Gyan on NDC’s 24-hour economy policy 

Former Ghana international Asamoah Gyan says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) needs to come clear with their 24-hour economy policy as he believes it’s not a ‘new’ thing. 

According to Gyan, some sectors in the country already run a similar policy urging the newly-voted government to commit to improving it. 

The policy was one of the NDC’s campaign messages and played a strong role in their return to power for the next four years. 

Gyan, in an Instagram live session on Thursday, January 2, questioned the true intentions of the policy.  

“It already exists. Police stations, hospitals, and filling stations already operate on a 24-hour basis,” he said.

“If the government says ‘24-hour economy,’ they should focus on improving it. It’s not a new policy.”

Gyan before deciding to step away from politics was chosen to be part of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Police probe 9-year-old’s drowning at Koforidua Hotel

The Koforidua Divisional Command is investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of a nine-year-old girl at Aberewa Nkwanta in the New Juaben South Constituency of the Eastern Region.

The young girl drowned in a swimming pool at the Tonyx Hotel near Aberewa Nkwanta in Koforidua on Sunday while at the hotel with her five siblings under the care of their father.

Details surrounding the incident remain unclear. Reports indicate that the girl did not participate in swimming activities but was instead taking pictures with other children by the poolside.

Tragically, she was discovered at the bottom of the pool when a search party was organized after the family realized she was missing as they prepared to leave.

Health professionals at the Eastern Regional Hospital pronounced her dead on arrival after she was rushed to the facility shortly after being retrieved from the pool.

Meanwhile, the management of the hotel has pledged to assist the police in their investigations and is expected to address the media regarding the incident.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tettey Yohunu, has filed a defamation suit at the Accra High Court against broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, and Media General Limited.

The suit, filed on Thursday, January 2, 2025, alleges that during a radio and TV program on December 27, 2024, Captain Smart made claims that certain elements within the Ghana Armed Forces and some officials of the Ghana Police Service were plotting to destabilise Ghana’s constitutional order through a coup d’état, according to a report by graphic.com.gh.

The court documents further highlight that Captain Smart also alleged that Christian Tettey Yohunu’s appointment as Deputy IGP was politically motivated.

Additionally, Smart claimed that Yohunu had been visiting the homes of National Democratic Congress (NDC) officials while allegedly holding membership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and providing them with money in an attempt to secure his appointment as IGP.

The Deputy IGP is seeking general damages for defamation, along with an injunction to prevent the defendants from making further defamatory statements.

He is also requesting a court order for the defendants to retract the statements and issue unqualified apologies through the media house.

CHASS urges GES to reconsider January 3 school reopening amid financial concerns

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) has urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) to reconsider reopening schools on January 3, 2025, due to unresolved financial issues.

In an interview on Joy News on Thursday, January 7, 2024, CHASS General Secretary, Baro Primus, emphasised that schools have not received funds or food supplies, making it challenging for them to provide essential services to students.

He further explained the position of CHASS, stating, “We haven’t rescinded our decision. Our appeal still holds. If the Ghana Education Service (GES) says the schools are reopening, we have no argument about who has the power to reopen schools.

“Our stance is that if schools are going to be reopened tomorrow, and as of today, schools have not received money and food, we believe that students can come. We are not going to lock any dormitory or prevent any students from coming. However, if the schools are unable to provide food, buy materials, and meet other essential needs, we cannot be held responsible.”

In an earlier statement issued on December 31, 2024, CHASS noted that the government has failed to respond to three previous appeals since August 2024 concerning the payment of arrears covering perishables, recurrent fees, and food transportation costs.

The school heads have warned that members who defy the directive will face sanctions for betraying their collective stance.

This marks the fourth appeal to education authorities regarding unpaid arrears, following letters sent in August, November, and December 2024.

“Andre is a good person. When he plays, he plays with passion. People brainwashed him, and I know it wasn’t his fault,” Gyan said in response to a fan’s question about his relationship with Ayew.

“Are you okay? Because today I’m in my element. You people create the problems, and I’ve told you it’s a fact. Are you okay? What do you want to know about me and Andre? Andre, when he sees me, has that genuine love inside. But he was brainwashed because people wanted to benefit from it. And that’s what brought this so-called rivalry. Asamoah Gyan and Andre Ayew have been perceived as rivals since a controversial captaincy transition in 2019, when Gyan was replaced as Black Stars captain by Ayew.

The captaincy saga has been a significant source of tension in their relationship, with Gyan previously stating in an interview that Ayew is not his friend.

“Andre is my teammate, but he’s not my friend. In every job, you work together, but not everyone is your friend that you hang out with,” Gyan earlier said in an interview with Wontumi FM.

Fire Destroys Over 100 Shops At Kantamanto

 

About 100 shops and wooden structures at the Kantamanto second-hand clothing market in Accra’s Central Business District, was razed down by a fire outbreak.

The Inferno which began about 1am on Thursday, January 2, 2025 left has left hundreds of traderslsing their source of livelihood.

Live footage from the scene showed devastated traders trying to salvage what was left of their investments.

Eyewitnesses said the fire broke out suddenly, catching many off guard.

“We were asleep when we heard someone shouting. When we woke up, we saw that there was a fire outbreak,” one resident recounted.

The Ghana National Fire Service said it deployed 13 fire tenders from across the Greater Accra Region to combat the blaze.

Speaking to the media, Fire Service spokesperson ADO1 Alex King Nartey, described the situation as “very serious.”

He explained that while firefighters initially managed to douse the fire, their efforts were hampered by the unavailability of a fire hydrant and the depletion of their water supply, leading to the fire reigniting.

Despite the severity of the fire, he noted that there had been no reports of severe casualties so far.

However, ADO1 Alex King Nartey stated that extinguishing the fire could take approximately two days, given its intensity and the conditions on the ground.

Traders and local residents joined the firefighters in battling the inferno, but the scale of destruction was immense.

The traders are appealing for immediate support to rebuild their businesses, while others are urging authorities to investigate the cause of the fire and improve market safety measures.

The outgoing President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is set to deliver his final State of the Nation Address (SONA).

He will address the nation from Parliament House on Friday, January 3, 2025, ahead of the dissolution of the 8th Parliament.

The President is expected to provide an update on the current state of the country, touching on various sectors of the economy, before handing over office to the newly elected President, John Mahama.

Meanwhile, the 8th Parliament will be dissolved on the night of Monday, January 6, to make way for the inauguration of the 9th Parliament on the same day.

The event will also include the election of the new Speaker of Parliament and its two deputies, who are expected to be sworn into office at midnight.

This is to ensure that the new government, led by John Mahama, can commence work immediately.

Former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Yaa Jantuah, has described Ghana’s outgoing president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as an error and a mistake bestowed upon the people of Ghana.

According to Jantuah, the day the citizens of Ghana cast their votes for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was the day the country was ruined.

To her, what’s even more worrying is the decision to award himself the title of the best president the country has ever had.

She expressed strong dissatisfaction regarding the difficulties Ghanaians are currently facing under Akufo-Addo’s leadership, pointing out that many Ghanaians could not even afford to buy chicken for Christmas.

“When I say that Nana Addo has the tendencies of Nebuchadnezzar, people think I am joking. He awarded himself the title of the best president. What does that mean? He is an error, a mistake. Something that has been bestowed upon us, he has brought darkness to this nation,” she said on TV3’s New Day.

“The state of the nation is reflected in my pocket, your pocket, and everyone’s pocket. This Christmas, we could not even afford to buy chicken. I am an ordinary Ghanaian, and I’m no different from anyone on the street,” she added.

The Management and staff of the Ghana Immigration Service on Monday held its annual thanksgiving service with a call on staff to reflect on the good deeds of Jesus Christ who exhibit light and eschew negative attitudes that has the tendency to affects the Institution.

Led by the Comptroller- General of the Ghana Immigration Service (CGIS), Kwame Asuah Takyi, management and staff could not hold themselves but danced to several melodious tunes from the GIS choir such as “Afe Ako Aprow” at the forecourt of the Headquarters of GIS in Accra.

While observing minutes of silence for personnel who died in line of duty, the staff also prayed and thanked God for protection over the years giving sometimes the challenges faced by some personnel of the service at the borders.

Comptroller- General of GIS, Kwame Asuah Takyi in a New Year message said Christians should assess themselves daily to appreciate God’s goodness which is portrayed in the light shed on humanity by Jesus Christ.

He said Christians are therefore required to be trustworthy and assess themselves to realign themselves to God by showing the light in their deeds as an example of people created in the image of God.

“We should always make Christmas as part of our lives showing Christ and not only at the end of the year or 25th. Christmas is the living sprit in you and you should live it moment by moment. Daily Christmas means aligning yourself and your spirit with God.

He also advised the staff to work hard in whatever task they were assigned and be grateful to God for the opportunity to serve the country in different capacities and be patient to rise through the ranks citing examples of staff who through hard work and dedication to duty at lower ranks have risen through the ranks and were now in senior positions
He also commended the current Government under the leadership of President Akufo Addo for retooling GIS with the resources needed to enable them perform their constitutional duties expected of them.

He said that although GIS continues to seek for assistance to improve its operations, he said evidence available showed that GIS in the last seven has received the highest form of support than any other government.

Mr. Asuah Takyi stressed that through teamwork by management and staff, GIS has also become one of the enviable and successful public service Institutions that are attracted to many graduates in recent times.

While commending managing and staff for their collective role for the successes chalked in border management among others, he also advised them to refrain from engaging in partisan politics as stated in the acts that established the Institution and focus on their work at all times.

He also urged the next successor to take the Institution a notch higher and help continue to enhance its operations as others have done in the last seven years while assuring that he was committed to offer guidance and assistance to his successor.

Head of Chaplain of GIS, Chief Superintendent, Rev. Michael Baakwaw in a sermon also admonished the staff to be thankful to God for God’s grace mercies that has sustained them over the years.

Rev. Baakwaw further asked them to appreciate the blessings of God, particularly for life and good health since they joined the service even though they may have faced one form of challenge or the other in the course of their responsibilities.

Maud Anima Quainoo, Samuel Ayer, Evelyn Lotsu, Yaw Owusu Achiaw and Prudence Aku Sosu were also introduced as officers appointed to the rank of Commissioners by the Comptroller General, Kwame Asuah Takyi at the thanksgiving service.

Daniel Craig’s No Time To Die did what none of the previous 24 James Bond outings had ever done before. After despatching off Rami Malek’s villain Safin, Ian Fleming’s spy died after being blown to smithereens by missiles hitting the island lair. The world was left in shock and now 007 fans can actually visit the spot where James Bond died.

In No Time To Die, Safin’s evil lair, Poison Island, was set between Russia and Japan in disputed waters. In reality, the movie was shot in the Faroe Islands, found just north of Scotland, specifically on one of their most remote isles.

Only accessible by ferry, Kalsoy (which means man island), is a beautiful, mountainous and mystical place, home to myths, legends and a population of less than 100.

At the northernmost point is a village of 14 called Trøllanes, which translates as Troll peninsula. It’s believed that in the old days the community would be visited every Twelfth Night by the magical creatures.

A young man called Jóhannus Kallgarð owns most of the land, hence his nickname The King of Kalsoy, which was his credit at the end of No Time To Die.

When Express.co.uk visited a couple of years ago, the hospitable Faroese farmer told us that his family have lived there since the 1600s and it’s often scouted by Hollywood for the likes of Star Wars and Game of Thrones. But it was James Bond who went all the way. A small camera crew from the No Time To Die production spent three weeks with The King of Kalsoy at the edge of Trøllanes filming shots for Safin’s island with locals hired as runners.

Originally, Daniel Craig himself had hoped to travel to the Faroes to shoot the scenes, but it wasn’t viable with all his security and crew on the small island. In the end, the spot where Bond dies by a cliff edge was shot for the star to be digitally added in afterwards. However, the farmer was unaware of what exactly was being filmed for the 007 movie, as helicopters helped transport equipment up the mountain landscape. That was until he worked it out.

The King of Kalsoy had access to a script while working on No Time To Die with the camera crew and knew that 007 was going to be added later to the shots and that Safin’s lair would be blown up. After filming concluded in 2019, he took the almighty gamble and ordered a grave for James Bond. The farmer now had the biggest spoiler in cinema history engraved into stone and had to keep it quiet. For months he kept the memorial hidden down at the village in his slaughterhouse as he banked on 007’s death. Flash forward to September 2021 and the star-studded world premiere of No Time To Die took place at the Royal Albert Hall.

The next day, the Faroe Islands had their own one in the capital of Tórshavn with The King of Kalsoy and Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen, a self-confessed Bond fan, in attendance. The farmer shared with us that when the third act saw 007 head to Safin’s Island, the audience erupted in cheers as he awaited to witness the spy’s fate with great anticipation. Lo and behold, he was of course right, and began plans to unveil his tribute to Bond.

In March 2022, the Faroe Islands announced that the tombstone of 007 would be unveiled by the country’s Prime Minister on Kalsoy, in a stunning video. The farmer told us he’d originally asked Craig himself who wasn’t available, but apparently, the star is still open to visiting the spot in the future. The grave reads, “In memory of James Bond 1962-2021”, referencing the premiere year of Sean Connery’s Dr No, the first 007 movie, as his date of birth. And under this is the Jack London quote M said at the end of No Time To Die upon the news of 007’s death: “The proper function of a man is to live, not to exist.”

What’s the context?

Ghana’s incoming president faces dilemma over signing the country’s strict anti-LGBTQ+ bill into force

Ghana’s incoming president, John Mahama, must weigh whether to approve a strict anti-LGBTQ+ bill passed by parliament, but left unsigned by his predecessor, that could jeopardise billions of dollars of financing from international creditors.

Here’s what you need to know.

What does the bill do?

The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill is one of the strictest such measures in Africa.

If it becomes law, LGBTQ+ people in the West African country, already facing discrimination and marginalisation, could also be denied access to jobs, healthcare and housing.

Same-sex relations in Ghana are already punishable by up to three years in jail, but the bill would extend maximum sentences and add a slew of new offences, including identifying as LGBTQ+, or showing support for gay and transgender rights.

What is the status of the bill?

Ghana’s parliament unanimously passed the bill on Feb. 28, but President Nana Akufo-Addo never signed it into law.

Akufo-Addo said he was waiting for the outcome of legal challenges to the bill, but the courts have dismissed three of those and the final case is due to be decided in March.

That means the decision will now be left to Mahama who will be sworn in as president on Jan. 7.

What are the financial implications of the bill?

Ghana’s Finance Ministry said in March that presidential approval of the legislation could lead to the loss of $3.8 billion in World Bank financing over the next five to six years, and derail a $3-billion loan package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Without World Bank and IMF backing for Ghana, other international investors could also withdraw financing.

That would lead to huge financial problems for a country that only managed to restructure its debt last year after nearly two years of not being able to pay its creditors following an earlier financial crisis.

What has the president-elect said about the bill?

In January last year, Mahama said he was against same-sex marriage.

“The faith I have will not allow me to accept a man marrying a man, and a woman marrying a woman,” he said.

In November, he told members of the clergy that being LGBTQ+ was a taboo that Western countries were pressurising African nations to accept in return for financial aid.

During the campaign for December’s general election, Mahama said same-sex relations went against his faith and culture and that he would strengthen laws against LGBTQ+ activities.

But days before the polls, when pressed by the BBC, Mahama would not say outright whether we sign the bill into force.

After his victory, Mahama told a delegation of clergy that “it is our hope that this president will sign the bill. If he doesn’t, it will expire, and the next parliament will have to address it again.”

What is Mahama’s record on LGBTQ+ rights?

As vice-president in 2011, Mahama said it was hard for authorities to address the higher rates of HIV/AIDS amongst men who have sex with men due to the stigma attached to them being open about their sexuality.

There is a very strong cultural hostility towards homosexuality in our society so often people are not willing to own up to their sexual orientation,” he said in an interview at Yale University. “We are trying to educate people to understand that we need to remove the stigma.”

But as president from 2012 to 2016, Mahama maintained Ghana’s prevailing conservative stance.

For instance, when there was uproar after he nominated Nana Oye Lithur, a human rights lawyer who had defended LGBTQ+ rights, as a minister, Mahama reiterated that he does not support gay rights, and that homosexuality is criminal in Ghana.

According to Jackson, these programs represent “excellent concepts” but suffer from “ambiguous execution.”

He added, “Create new labels, but do it!”—encouraging the Mahama-led government to address the shortcomings in implementation while preserving the initiatives’ core objectives.

The “Gold for Reserves/Gold for Oil” initiative, designed to stabilize fuel prices by leveraging Ghana’s gold reserves for oil imports, faced criticism for transparency and feasibility issues.

Similarly, the “Year of Return” gained international acclaim for boosting tourism and reconnecting the African diaspora with their roots but fell short in capitalizing on its momentum.

Meanwhile, the “One Village, One Dam” project, aimed at enhancing rural agriculture through irrigation systems, was plagued by allegations of subpar construction and limited impact.

In a TikTok video, Daisy said she wrote her WAEC when she was just 15 years old.

However, she could not pass all the papers, so she would have to retake the examination.

At that time, Daisy said her mother advised her to take up a job and earn money and that she would take the money to school.

She said she worked and got some money, but her mother could not produce it.

Now, Daisy said she has gained admission to the university at the age of 25, 10 years after she completed secondary school.

She said:

“Wrote WAEC at age 15 but failed some subjects. My dad said he wasn’t gonna train me again. My mum said I should work for 2 years so that I can go to school with my salary. After 2 years she couldn’t bring out 5 naira. I was so angry and I left the house at 17, see me now! Just got admission last year at 25 as a Mass Comm student and my dad was going around to show everybody my matriculation pictures with joy on his face.”

“Per our evaluation, the fire has destroyed over a hundred stores because many of them were closely situated by each other. So, once the fire catches one, the spread becomes easier. But the good thing is that the salvage is much more than the damage. Because, looking at the other buildings, we have been able to salvage them from the fire.

“It has been a daunting task, especially considering the fact that there isn’t any working fire hydrant here, it was a big problem for us. We had to travel to Frisco or GRA to go and replenish. In the early hours, it was so much of a problem, but when it was morning and the whole place became congested; it became a bigger problem,” he stared.

British Rapper Stormzy, 31, has been banned from driving for nine months after being caught using a mobile phone while driving his Rolls-Royce in London. An undercover police officer spotted him on Addison Road, West Kensington, in March last year.

Stormzy, whose real name is Michael Ebenezer Owuo Junior, pleaded guilty to the offence via a letter submitted to Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court.

District Judge Andrew Sweet criticised his actions as “dangerous and irresponsible,” noting that Stormzy already had six points on his licence for previous speeding offences.

In October 2023, he was stopped while driving a Lamborghini Urus with illegally tinted front windows allowing only 4% light transmission, far below the legal 70% requirement. The judge imposed a £2,010 fine on Stormzy, who did not attend court. The incidents highlight repeated concerns about the rapper’s driving record, which Judge Sweet deemed “not good.”

In the suit filed on Thursday, January 2, 2025, the Deputy IGP stated that Captain Smart during a radio and TV programme on December 27, 2024 had alleged that “some elements within the Ghana Armed Forces and some officials of the Ghana Police Service had intended to destabilize Ghana’s constitutional order by causing a coup d’état.”

According to the court document, Smart had alleged that Mr Christian Tettey Yohunu’s appointment as Deputy IGP was politically motivated and that he participated in meetings aimed at securing the position.

The broadcaster also claimed Yohunu had been visiting the homes of National Democratic Congress (NDC) officials while allegedly holding membership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and paying them monies as a lobby to be appointed as IGP.

It is based on these statements by Captain Smart that the Deputy IGP is seeking general damages for defamation and an injunction to restrain the defendants from making further defamatory statements.

He is also requesting a court order directing the defendants to retract the statements and render unqualified apologies through three publications on both Onua TV and three radio announcements on Onua FM.

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adams, is expected to present a mini-budget for the 2025 Fiscal Year, covering the first three months of January, February, and March 2025—on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, January 2, 2024.

This follows a formal communication from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to the House, in which he submitted budget estimates for the first quarter of 2025 for the Judiciary and Judicial Service, the Audit Service, and Parliament and the Parliamentary Service.

Prior to this, Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson reassured Ghanaians that the incoming government is prepared to handle the country’s finances, despite the outgoing administration’s failure to present a mini-budget for the first quarter of 2025.

This comes after Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adams, following several delays, failed to present a mini-budget for the first quarter of 2025 within the stipulated time frame, as the new government prepares to take office on January 7, 2025.

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has announced the passing of his mother on the evening of Wednesday, January 1, 2025.

This heartbreaking event comes just weeks after the Chippa United goalkeeper lost his father a few hours after representing the Super Eagles in their 1-1 draw against Benin Republic in November 2024.

In a post shared on his social media account on X, the South Africa-based goalkeeper tweeted:

“RIP Mom. Worst year of my life already. A very, very crazy world indeed.”

The Nigeria Football Federation extended its condolences to Nwabali, expressing their support and solidarity.

“Our heartfelt condolences to Stanley Nwabali on the loss of his mother. Stay strong, Stanley. Sending you strength and support during this difficult time. You are not alone; we are all with you.”

For Nwabali, this loss will be a huge shock, especially as his tweet on X a day prior suggested he was optimistic about the year ahead.

Since making his debut for Nigeria, Nwabali has earned 13 caps and was part of the Super Eagles squad that claimed silver at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, narrowly losing the final 2-1 to eventual winners Ivory Coast.
