Grammy host Trevor Noah aims dig at Trump

0

South African comedian Trevor Noah didn’t hold back during his fifth consecutive stint as host of the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, making several pointed jokes about former President Donald Trump and his policies.

Noah kicked off the ceremony with an opening monologue that touched on some of music’s biggest stars, including Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Rihanna, while also making references to the new administration in Washington.

Trevor Noah took a jab at the Grammy voting process, which involves 13,000 members of the Recording Academy, jokingly suggesting that “20 million illegal immigrants” were part of the vote.

Later in the night, he made another politically charged remark, stating, “There’s been a few changes in Washington. So I’m gonna enjoy tonight because this may be the last time I get to host anything in this country.”

His comments came just days after a controversial immigration policy under Trump’s leadership resulted in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, leading to the arrest of 1,179 individuals across major U.S. cities.

Several other artistes used their speeches to show support for marginalised communities and speak out against the divide in the country.

Trump had promised the American public that “it will all be worth the price that must be paid” to bring the “Golden Age.”

While accepting the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, Alicia Keys took the opportunity to address another controversial policy from the Trump administration—the elimination of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) departments.

In her speech said, “DEI is not a threat, it’s a gift. And the more voices, the more powerful the sound. When destructive forces try to burn us down, we rise from the ashes like a phoenix.” She added,

“This is not the time to shut down the diversity of voices we’ve seen on this stage: talented, hard-working people from different backgrounds, with different points of view. And it changes the game.”

Chapell Roan, who won Best New Artist during the star-studded night sent a message to the trans communities during her red carpet interview with GLAAD.

She said, “It’s brutal right now. Trans people have always existed and they will forever exist, and they will never, no matter what happens, take trans joy away. That has to be protected more than anything because I would not be here without trans girls.”

In a direct message to transgender Americans, the singer said, “Just know that pop music is thinking about you and cares about you, and I’m doing my best to really stand up for you in every way I can,” as reported by Daily Mail.

Lady Gaga also expressed her support for her transgender fans on the stage. She said, “I just want to say tonight that trans people are not invisible. Trans people deserve love. The queer community deserves to be lifted up. Music is love.”

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu

The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Yandoh, has stated that the newly appointed minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, will not be able to meet the high standards set by his predecessor, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

According to Yandoh, Iddrisu’s appointment will lead to failure as the education sector faces potential collapse due to certain policies the government plans to implement.

He claimed that these policies would lead to deterioration in the sector, ultimately discrediting the new minister.

He further highlighted speculations regarding the cancellation of teacher trainee allowances, arguing that such a move would not be beneficial. Additionally, he pointed out that the feeding of Senior High School (SHS) students is gradually becoming a challenge, raising concerns about the sustainability of the programme.

Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa TV on February 4, 2025, Yandoh said, “They sent Haruna Iddrisu to the Education Ministry to disgrace him. You will see that due to the remarkable improvements brought to the sector by Dr. Adutwum, the whole world recognized Ghana’s progress in education.

“Look at the advancements in STEM education and the impressive projects students are undertaking, including motion detectors, planes, ships, and more. However, student feeding is becoming a major issue, and they no longer have any hope. Now, teachers are the target. They just want to destroy the school system. The government intends to scrap teacher allowances, leaving them struggling financially.”

President Mahama Drops Big News for Government Workers

0

In a significant move for government workers, President John Mahama has initiated long-overdue wage negotiations to improve their earnings. The National Tripartite Committee, comprising government officials, employers, and organized labor, began discussions on the 2025 Minimum Wage on Monday, February 3, 2025.

This development offers hope to many public sector employees who have long awaited salary adjustments to match the rising cost of living. According to the Presidency, once the minimum wage negotiations are concluded, talks on base pay for public sector salaries will commence.

However, the negotiations are already behind schedule, as they were originally set for completion by April 2024 under the Public Financial Management (PFM) Act. Acknowledging the urgency, the government is urging all stakeholders to act swiftly.

“Government is calling on social partners (government, employers, organized labor) to work expeditiously to complete the negotiations in time to inform the 2025 Budget,” said Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson to the President.

Public sector workers remain optimistic that the new wage structure will bring financial relief amid rising economic challenges. Meanwhile, employers are weighing the economic impact, balancing fair wages with business sustainability.

The Tripartite Committee is expected to finalize discussions in the coming weeks. If negotiations proceed smoothly, government employees could see meaningful salary improvements soon. With President Mahama’s commitment to workers’ welfare, anticipation is high for a favorable outcome.

COCOBOD choking with debt, set to pay GH₵5.37 billion in 2025

Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku

The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has revealed that the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) is struggling under a huge debt burden, which is affecting its operations.

Speaking on New York-based Adinkra Radio with Daakyehene Ofosu Agyemang, the minister disclosed that COCOBOD is set to pay a debt of GH¢5.37 billion in 2025.

Describing the situation as very worrying, he vowed to work hard to turn things around.

“COCOBOD is choking with huge debt. According to the handing-over notes, this year alone, the debt to be paid is GH¢5.37 billion. So, when COCOBOD secures funds for cocoa purchases this year, it will first be required to settle this debt before farmers can be paid at the producer price. This amount is not the entire debt owed by COCOBOD; it is only the portion due for payment this year,” the minister said.

He further revealed that an ongoing investigation is taking place at COCOBOD.

“We are aware of some malfeasance, but let’s wait until the investigation is completed. Once the report is out, we will all get to know what has transpired at COCOBOD. We are committed to changing the status quo and will ensure that happens,” he stated.

The minister also outlined plans to boost cocoa production to an appreciable level, as the NDC government did before leaving office in 2016.

“We want to reintroduce the distribution of free fertilizer to cocoa farmers and provide support during the pruning stage. Additionally, we will deploy more extension officers to assist the farmers. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) standard, one extension officer should serve 500 farmers. However, in Ghana, one extension officer currently serves 1,765 farmers. We certainly need to address this issue,” he added.

Minority Abstains From Samuel George’s Approval

0

The Minority Caucus in Parliament abstain from voting on the approval of Samuel Nartey George as Minister-designate for Communications and Digital Technology.

The decision, according to the Minority Leader, was influenced by representations made by some respected members of the Majority Caucus, advising against a secret ballot on the matter.

The Minority raised concerns about George’s past conduct, particularly his harsh language directed at former President Nana Akufo-Addo and Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkonoo.

Additionally, they pointed to his failure to provide required documents during his vetting as a further reason for their stance.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin emphasized these issues as central to their decision to abstain from voting.

Despite the Minority’s abstention, the nominee was approved for the position by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority, who voted in favour of his confirmation.

The approval, however, did not go through a secret vote as indicated earlier by the Minority caucus.

In a smooth process, other ministerial nominees were also confirmed without dispute. These included Kofi Adams for Sports and Recreation, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed for Environment, Science and Technology, and Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo for Labour, Jobs and Employment.

“Afenyo-Markin swings at everything with the hope he will land something good”

0

According to GhanaWeb, the Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, has expressed strong disapproval of the behavior exhibited by Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin during parliamentary vetting.

He characterized Afenyo-Markin’s conduct as unrestrained and chaotic.

Suhuyini contended that Afenyo-Markin’s actions seem motivated by a need to gain visibility for his minority party rather than to focus on pressing national issues.

In a video posted on X by TV3 on January 4, 2025, he remarked that Afenyo-Markin’s approach was aggressive and indiscriminate, suggesting it was expected given his leadership role.

“He is like a bull in a China shop. He swings at everything and anything with the hope that he will land something good. I was not surprised at all by his approach when he finally took over as minority leader,” he stated.

He elaborated that Afenyo-Markin’s behavior in parliamentary sessions and the appointments committee appears to be a deliberate strategy to ensure his party, despite its smaller size, remains relevant and recognized.

However, he criticized the relevance of the points raised, noting that the focus seemed more on gaining media attention than addressing the concerns of the majority of Ghanaians.

Suhuyini described Afenyo-Markin’s leadership as disorderly and overly confrontational, asserting that his tactics often serve to distract and buy time for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) when faced with challenges in Parliament.

He pointed out that when the NPP finds itself in difficult situations, Afenyo-Markin tends to introduce distractions that allow the party to regroup.

He further suggested that while this strategy may have initially helped the Minority attract attention, it has now become excessive and counterproductive.

Suhuyini remarked that there seems to be more public commentary than constructive internal dialogue, which is leading to a disorganized and unpleasant situation.

He proposed that it might be time for the Minority to reconsider their approach.

Parliament confirms Ablakwa, Akandoh and 10 ministerial nominees

0

Parliament has confirmed Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa as the Minister for Foreign Affairs. The House also endorsed Kwabena Mintah Akandoh as the Minister of Health, along with 10 other ministerial nominees.

While Mr Ablakwa’s approval was secured by a majority decision, as the Minority abstained, Mr Akandoh and the 10 other nominees were approved by consensus.

The confirmed ministers include Seidu Issifu as Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Charity Gardiner as Minister of the Ahafo Region, Awuribe Issifu as Minister of the Savannah Region, and Wilbert Petty Brentum as Minister-designate for the Western North Region.

Others are Joseph Nelson as Minister of the Western Region, Joseph Addae Akwaboa as Minister of the Bono Region, Francis Owusu Antwi as Minister of the Bono East Region, Puozuing Charles Lwanga as Minister of the Upper East Region, Felix Kwakye Ofosu as Minister of State for Government Communication, and Eduamoah Ekow Panyin Okyere as Minister of the Central Region.

Their approval followed the presentation of the Appointments Committee’s 12th report by its Chairman, Bernard Ahiafor, who urged the House to adopt the report and approve the nominees.

Minority’s rejection of Ablakwa

However, in seconding the motion, the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, announced that all 88 members of the NPP Minority Caucus rejected Mr Ablakwa’s nomination and would abstain from voting on his confirmation.

He insisted that the records should reflect that Mr Ablakwa’s approval was solely a decision of the Majority.

While acknowledging the Foreign Affairs Ministry as an important institution of state, Mr Afenyo-Markin stated that the Minority was opposed to Mr Ablakwa’s nomination. He explained that the Minority had abstained from approving Mr Ablakwa at the committee level, leaving his confirmation to be decided by the Majority.

Minority “washes hands”

In a symbolic gesture, the Second Deputy Whip, Habib Iddrisu, poured bottled water over his hands, signifying the Minority’s dissociation from Mr Ablakwa’s approval.

“Mr Speaker, we are washing our hands to tell them that we are not part of the sins that he has committed. All the Airport Hills sins are on their head. If tomorrow, he and his ORAL team pursue you, it is on your head, but if he repents and comes back to this House, we will accept him and welcome him,” Mr Afenyo-Markin declared.

He acknowledged that Mr Ablakwa had distinguished himself in issues related to his new portfolio but said the Minority was uncomfortable with his role as Chairman of the “Operation Recover All Loot” (ORAL) committee, as stated on his curriculum vitae.

Mr Afenyo-Markin questioned the constitutionality of the ORAL committee, arguing that while the Minority was not opposed to efforts to investigate corruption, it disapproved of Mr Ablakwa’s leadership of the task force.

“Mr Speaker, we are against his chair of this ORAL and their activities in the country; we think and we hold this view firmly that their actions are taking this country back,” he said.

He further argued that the country already had established anti-corruption institutions such as the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Financial Crime Office, the Office of the Special Prosecutor, the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), and specialised divisions within the Ghana Police Service.

Accusing Mr Ablakwa of “holding people’s feet to the fire” and demanding accountability from the political class, Mr Afenyo-Markin said, “It means that you yourself must demonstrate that.”

However, he assured the nominee that he would not stand in the way of his political progress.

“I am a politician like you, and I will not be the one to be pursuing you,” he concluded.

Banning clubs from hosting home matches is not the solution – Security expert tells GFA

0

Anthony Acquaye, a security analyst Anthony Acquaye, a security analyst

Anthony Acquaye, a security analyst has stated that banning clubs from hosting home matches is not the solution to addressing security gaps in Ghana’s football stadiums.

Instead, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) must adopt a more strategic approach involving threat intelligence gathering, risk assessment, and proactive security measures to curb violence and hooliganism at football matches amidst the stabbing of Kotoko football fan during a match between Nsoatreman.

“The GFA must take a substantial amount of responsibility for the recurring acts of hooliganism and violence that have marred our football stadiums, from past incidents, some of which have tragically claimed innocent lives, it is clear that the GFA has not learned sufficiently from these failures,” he said in a statement.

According to him, one of the major shortcomings identified is the lack of structured threat intelligence within the GFA.

He explained that currently, there are no dedicated officers assigned across the sixteen regions to gather and analyze intelligence related to security risks ahead of matches. Without such a system, he stated that security measures remain reactive rather than proactive, failing to prevent violent incidents before they occur.

He criticized the GFA’s practice of reaching out to police commanders only a day before matches to request security deployment.

He asserted that a glaring example of this failure was the stabbing of the Kotoko supporter, Pooly, which, according to the analyst, could have been prevented with the right security measures in place.

“Are bomb-sniffing dogs or handheld explosive detection devices deployed at entry points?” the expert questioned.

“At what point has the GFA made it a policy for security personnel to prevent intoxicated or violent fans from entering stadiums?” the analyst asked.
