CJ suspension: Why I don’t agree that Mahama followed due process – Ex Deputy A-G

0

Former Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Diana Asonaba Dapaah, has criticised President John Mahama’s decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, describing it as a breach of the Constitution.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mrs Dapaah stated that there was no legal basis for establishing a prima facie case against the Chief Justice.

“My position has been that there is no basis whatsoever for finding a prima facie case in respect of at least the three petitions that have come,” she said.

She rejected claims that President Mahama had followed due process, insisting that his actions violated constitutional provisions.

“I do not agree with anyone who says the President used due process to remove the Chief Justice. I believe President Mahama has sinned against the Constitution,” she stressed.

Mrs Dapaah explained that under the Constitution, when the President determines a prima facie case against a Chief Justice, he may set up a committee to investigate further.

However, she stated that this discretionary power must not be abused.

“The fact that the Constitution uses the word ‘may’ means the President’s decision is not automatic. It should not be based on prejudice, and it must be subjected to constitutional checks,” she said, referencing Article 296 of the Constitution.

According to her, if the President had been transparent, he would have provided clear reasons for establishing a prima facie case, but he failed to do so.

“The President should have given reasons for the prima facie case. Without those reasons, it is very grave,” she said.

She further explained that even though the President has the right to suspend a Chief Justice once a prima facie case is established, that discretion can still be reviewed constitutionally.

“The fact that the President’s discretion can be subjected to constitutional review still stands. So it is wrong to suggest that once the President acts, he cannot be questioned,” she said.

Mrs Dapaah cited the precedent of Agyei Twum’s case to support her argument that presidential discretion must be exercised fairly and transparently.

Her comments come in the wake of widespread public and legal debate over the suspension, with many questioning the transparency, motives, and procedural fairness of the President’s decision.

NPP to launch ‘Patriotic Institute’ to deepen ideals and national dev’t

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to launch a transformative initiative, the ‘Patriotic Institute’, in May 2025, as part of efforts to deepen ideological education, build capacity among its members, and enhance its contribution to national development.

This was revealed by the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, during the party’s recent nationwide tour in Takoradi.

According to Mr Kodua, the establishment of the Patriotic Institute marks a major step towards institutionalising political education within the party and empowering members with knowledge, leadership skills, and a renewed sense of patriotism.

“The Patriotic Institute will be the intellectual and ideological engine of the NPP. It will focus on leadership training, research, and the promotion of the party’s foundational principles — freedom, democracy, development, and service to Ghana,” he said.

He emphasised that the Institute will not only serve the needs of the party but will also be open to nurturing young leaders, public servants, and citizens committed to democratic values and national progress.

“This is about grooming a generation that understands governance, patriotism, and the spirit of service to country,” Kodua added.

The NPP’s Patriotic Institute is expected to offer a range of activities, including seminars, public lectures, political education courses, research publications, and policy analysis. It will also serve as a platform for engaging scholars, political leaders, and development practitioners from Ghana and abroad.

Party officials have described the upcoming launch as “timely and strategic” as the NPP continues to reposition itself for the future, focusing not only on winning elections but also on shaping the ideological and developmental discourse of Ghana.

As the NPP prepares for this historic launch in May, expectations are high among party members and political watchers alike, with many seeing the Patriotic Institute as a bold investment in the intellectual future of the party and the nation.

More details about the location, programmes, and leadership of the Patriotic Institute are expected to be unveiled at the launch event.

The Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa has cautioned men of God and individuals against defacing the newly introduced chip-embedded passports, in the name of seeking spiritual intervention in their quest to travel abroad.

According to Samuel Okdudzeto Ablakwa, the anointing of the chip-embedded passport will compromise the security features.

NPP, other political parties notify police of May 5 demonstration

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP), along with four other political parties, has officially notified the Ghana Police Service of their plans to stage a demonstration on May 5 against President John Mahama’s decision to suspend Chief Justice Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkonoo.

The suspension followed the establishment of a prima facie case after three separate petitions were filed calling for her removal. However, the political parties involved have strongly condemned the decision, calling it a direct attack on the independence of the judiciary.

Speaking to JoyNews, NPP Director of Communications Richard Ahiagba expressed the party’s concerns, stating that the suspension undermines judicial independence and is a politically motivated move aimed at weakening the judiciary.

“All of us are united, the five political parties are united in leading this demonstration. The indications we are getting are that other political parties are warming up to join. In the coming days, you will see that the number of parties supporting this will increase.

“This is a call for all Ghanaians to come out and demonstrate against the President’s move to remove the Chief Justice, which we find to be against the constitution, egregious, and a political attempt to subjugate the judiciary,” he said.

Mr Ahiagba confirmed that the demonstration would begin at 7 am on May 5, starting from a park opposite the Supreme Court, before proceeding through Parliament House and ending at the Jubilee House, where the petition will be submitted to President Mahama or a representative.

He added, “We went to the registry, we submitted our notice for the demonstration on the 5th. Our request is for the police to provide security, and we have every intention to make it a peaceful demonstration. Their role is to support us and ensure that the demonstration goes on peacefully, without any disruption to public order.”

He also emphasised that this demonstration is about defending Ghana’s democracy. “Ultimately, we see this as an effort aimed at destroying our democracy, and we will not stand for it.”

Mr Ahiagba addressed the withdrawal of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) from the protest. He accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of plotting to disrupt the upcoming demonstration by influencing participants to withdraw.

“I’m not sure any political party worth its salt would want to withdraw from a legitimate demonstration. If you go back in our history, in May 1992, when the ban on political party activities was lifted, this country came alive. Now, when we have the chance to preserve our democracy, it’s strange for any political party to say they won’t be part of it,” he said.

He suggested that the NDC might be behind efforts to weaken the resolve of participating parties.

“We know about efforts to water down our resolve. We know about efforts by the government to weaken our front. But we urge the leadership of GUM to stand strong and stand for democracy. If you don’t have democracy, you don’t have a political party. So, they should reconsider their position,” he said.

The Associate Director and Head of Transfer Pricing at LIMA Partners, Ernest Amosah, has outlined some key sectors in Ghana that are ripe for cross-border investment under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

According to him, the AfCFTA has created opportunities for new businesses by reducing tariffs on items imported under the GTI framework of AfCFTA, provided the imported items meet product-specific rules of origin.

He added that the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), an AU infrastructure developed in collaboration with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), complements trading under the AfCFTA and has greatly benefited businesses engaged in AfCFTA transactions.

Speaking during a webinar organised by LIMA Partners on the theme “Unlocking Opportunities Across Africa: Harnessing AfCFTA for Business Growth,” held on April 25, 2025, Amosah listed the key sectors as follows:

– Processed Cocoa

– Pharmaceuticals

– Cashew (Processed $ In-shel)

-Aluminium Products

– Horticultural Products

– Iron and Steel Products

– Oil Seeds (Processed)

– Automobiles and Vehicles

– Fish & Fishery Products,

– Garments and Textiles

– Apparel

– Industrial Salt

– Natural Rubber Sheets

– Petro-Chemicals

– Oil Palm

As part of his presentation, Amosah noted that Ghana was the first country, together with Kenya, to deposit its instrument of ratification with the AU Commission.

Additionally, Ghana was selected in 2020 to host the permanent Secretariat of the AfCFTA.

Ghana has developed the National AfCFTA Policy, Action Plan, and National Export Development Strategy to operationalise the implementation of AfCFTA protocols.

“Ghana’s implementation of AfCFTA involves key institutions including the Inter- Ministerial Coordination Committee, Ministry of Trade and Industry, and Ghana Investment Promotion Center, all of which play specific roles,” he said.

German legend slams Rüdiger after shameful attack on referee in Copa del Rey final

0

Antonio Rudiger is a defender of Real Madrid Antonio Rudiger is a defender of Real Madrid

Antonio Rüdiger has come under heavy fire for his disgraceful conduct during Saturday’s Copa del Rey final, where Real Madrid suffered a painful extra-time defeat to Barcelona.

In the dying moments, Rüdiger lost his composure and hurled an ice pack at referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, an act that earned him a straight red card and worldwide criticism.

Tensions boiled over after Barcelona snatched a dramatic late winner, with Real Madrid players openly furious about several refereeing decisions. Rüdiger’s anger escalated as he threw an object at the match official, forcing teammates like Ferland Mendy and Madrid staff members to physically restrain him when the referee approached to dismiss him.

Germany’s sporting director, Rudi Völler, condemned Rüdiger’s behavior, calling it unacceptable for a national team player.

“Toni is a great player, but as a national team player, he must also demonstrate class in his behavior,” Völler said.

“He rightly demands respect for himself, but he must extend that same respect to others without exception. In this case, he and some teammates allowed themselves to be swept up by the heated atmosphere that often surrounds the club and that is unacceptable, especially for a German international,” he added.

Rüdiger has since issued an apology, but it may not be enough to save him from severe punishment. Under the Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary code, “mild violence” toward referees could trigger a 12-match ban.

Worse still, if his actions are classified as assault against referees, he could be sidelined for up to six months, a potential disaster for both Real Madrid and the German national team ahead of a crucial international calendar.

Volta NDC grassroots warn of apathy in 2028 over appointment snub

0

The grassroots of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta region have warned of voter apathy in the region in the 2028 general elections due to President Mahama’s failure to appoint Volta Regional NDC executives and other stalwarts to key public positions.

According to them, the refusal by the administration to reward the region with appointments for its contribution to the electoral fortunes of the governing party has left the grassroots disgruntled.

Addressing a press conference in Ho, the Convener of the New Voter Forum, Edmond Amos Ameamu, asserted that though some people of Volta origin have been appointed, they are not connected in any way to the party in the region, and did not render support in any form during the 2024 campaigning.

He added that the continuous neglect of NDC stalwarts who are familiar with the grassroots in appointments will have dire consequences on the party’s vision to maintain power beyond 2028.

Mr. Ameamu supported a call by the Volta Renaissance Forum on President Mahama to consider appointing party fateful who worked and are identified by the grassroots in its stronghold to appease them.

“In our candid view, we believe the Petitioners have a strong case which President Mahama needs to treat urgently with the view of appointing faithful NDC party executives and activists who have strong links with the grassroots. This we believe will go a long way to motivate the base of the party and prevent voter apathy ahead of 2028 elections”, he stressed.

He questioned the government and party’s decision to appoint “an alien” as the acting Volta Regional Director of the National Health Insurance Authority, describing it as “bogus, a slap in the face of hard work, abuse of office and betrayal of trust.”

“The grassroots, who worked so hard day and night to secure this emphatic victory have been patient in the midst of appointment neglect. What we will not however take is the reckless imposition of aliens who did nothing to help us win the election”, he added.

Mr. Ameamu recommended the party’s hierarchy to convene a meeting with the concerned stakeholders and give a fair hearing aimed at finding a lasting solution to their concerns.

He further opined that the party leadership and the Regional Minister should collaborate and ensure NDC activists are appointed to avert “mass action including takeovers, demonstrations, picketing among others in the coming weeks”.

He also entreated the local government leadership in the region to devise measures to create job opportunities for the teeming NDC supporters “to motivate the base of the party which is almost becoming disgruntled.”

He, therefore issued a week ultimatum for their concerns to be addressed, with emphasis on the reversal of the appointment of the Acting Volta Regional Director of NHIS.

He emphasized that “failure to which we shall take our civil action against this unpopular decision.”

Gbegbeyise-Shiabu residents hopeful as sea defence wall progresses

0

Residents of Gbegbeyise-Shiabu in Dansoman, located within the Ablekuma West Constituency in the Greater Accra Region,  have expressed optimism as work steadily advances on the 5-kilometre sea defence wall project.

The project, which had faced significant delays, aims to mitigate the longstanding damage caused by flooding and tidal waves, offering crucial protection to vulnerable communities along the coast.

Speaking to Channel One News on Monday, April 28, some residents noted that while there have been no major incidents recently, they believe the true impact of the ongoing work will become evident during the heavy rains expected in June and July.

“There have been a lot of changes, and we have seen improvement. They are trying, they have been working every day with their trucks and cars just to get the work done,” a resident said.
Another added, “Currently, the damage caused by the sea to the buildings has reduced. We are expecting the rain to start, and that is when we can decide whether the sea defence has been completely done or not. At the moment, we can’t conclude.”

The Assembly Member for the Gbebu-Mpoase Electoral Area, Wilberforce Mensah, also urged contractors to expedite the work to prevent any potential disasters.

“For the past few months, the sea has disturbed the people for a long time, but due to the efforts of the former MP and the government, who started the sea defence, the people are no longer going through what they used to go through. So we are hoping that they will complete the project so that the people will continue to enjoy the freedom that they are enjoying for the first time,” he urged.

Meanwhile, the Site Manager, speaking off the record, revealed that although the project was originally scheduled for completion in four years, it may be finished earlier, possibly within two to three years.

OSP files criminal charges against Charles Bissue

0

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has filed 15 criminal charges against Charles Bissue, former Secretary of the defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), and his alleged accomplice, Andy Thomas Owusu, for corruption and abuse of public office in a mining licensing scandal involving GHC35,000.

The charges, filed at the High Court (Criminal Division) in Accra on April 28, allege that between January and February 2019, Mr. Bissue, while serving as IMCIM Secretary, corruptly accepted bribes totaling GHC35,000 from one Benjamin Adjapong, directly and through Owusu, to fast-track the renewal of an expired mining license for ORR Resources Enterprise without proper documentation.

The charges include multiple counts against both accused. Bissue faces nine counts, including Using Public Office for Profit under Section 179C(a) of Act 29 for receiving GHC15,000 on January 22, GHC10,000 on January 30, and another GHC10,000 on February 8 to bypass IMCIM vetting processes.

He is also charged with Corruption by a Public Officer under Sections 239(1) & (3) of Act 29 (as amended by Act 1034) for accepting bribes to influence official duties.

Mr. Owusu faces six counts, including Aiding Bissue’s Corruption under Section 179C(b) for acting as a middleman to facilitate payments, as well as Corruption of a Public Officer and Accepting Bribes to Influence Bissue under Sections 239(2) & 252(1).

These charges relate to GHC5,000 payouts he allegedly received in Kumasi for falsely claiming he could secure favors from Bissue.

The OSP’s investigation revealed that Mr. Owusu, in a sting operation by Tiger Eye P.I., negotiated a GHC100,000 bribe (later reduced to GHC40,000 each) with Adjapong, who posed as an ORR Resources representative.

Mr. Bissue ultimately received GHC35,000, while Mr. Owusu pocketed GHC15,000, per the prosecution.

In return, Bissue allegedly issued fraudulent permits and stickers declaring ORR Resources compliant with mining laws.

The IMCIM, established in 2017 to combat illegal mining (galamsey), was dissolved in 2021 after corruption scandals, including Bissue’s alleged involvement in misappropriating excavators and gold nuggets.

In November 2024, the Human Rights Court dismissed the final in a series of suits filed by Charles Bissue aimed at preventing the Office of the Special Prosecutor from arresting, investigating, or charging him.

Mr. Bissue had previously obtained a 10-day ex parte injunction restraining the OSP from arresting him, alleging that the warrant issued was unlawfully procured and intended to harass him.

He also sought a declaration that a notice marking him as wanted was void.

In its judgment, the Court found Bissue’s claims entirely unfounded, stating there was no evidence to support his allegations. The central question was whether an arrest warrant had indeed been issued by the Kaneshie District Court for OSP against Bissue.

The Court ruled that it was Bissue’s responsibility to provide proof of such a warrant, which he failed to do.

The Judge concluded that no warrant had been issued and dismissed the claim as a figment of the imagination of Bissue, awarding costs of GHC10,000 against him.

This ruling cleared the path for the OSP to continue its investigations into Mr. Bissue’s involvement with the defunct IMCIM and, in another separate case, pursue charges related to allegations of corruption as depicted in the Tiger Eye P.I. documentary .

In a profound reaffirmation of its commitment to Ghana’s sporting excellence, KGL Group, Ghana’s leading wholly-owned indigenous conglomerate with interests in Technology Innovation, Fin-Tech, Logistics, Trade, Property Development, Gaming, and Commerce, has once again reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the development of sports in Ghana, the group has signed a landmark two-year sponsorship agreement worth GHS 20 million with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to support the Black Stars.

This renewed partnership reflects the positive impact of continuous calls by national leadership, particularly the Honorable Minister of Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, for greater corporate Ghana involvement in advancing sports development across the country. It also stands as a response to the rallying call from the President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama urging corporate Ghana to “bring back the love” for the Black Stars and rekindle the spirit of national unity and pride through sports.

At the official signing ceremony, the Executive Chairman of KGL Group, Mr. Alex Apau Dadey, emphasized that this renewed sponsorship agreement was not only about corporate sponsorship, a mere afterthought or Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) checkbox, but as a central pillar of answering a national call to action.
“At KGL Group, we believe that sports is a fundamental force for national transformation — inspiring discipline, resilience, unity, and community pride,” Mr. Dadey stated.

“We are proud to contribute to Ghana’s sporting journey and to be part of the broader national movement to restore pride and belief in the Black Stars.”
Mr. Dadey also took the opportunity to express deep gratitude to key figures whose advocacy and leadership have been instrumental in ensuring that this partnership comes to fruition.

“We are especially grateful to the Honorable Minister of Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, for spearheading conversations and negotiations between the KGL Group and GFA to come to this partnership agreement.

In a special tribute, Mr. Dadey acknowledged the enduring vision and advocacy of President H.E. John Dramani Mahama, whose contributions to promoting sports infrastructure, youth development, and excellence continue to inspire corporate institutions like KGL Group.
“We are deeply grateful to President John Dramani Mahama, whose legacy of prioritizing sports development reminds us of the critical role that investment and collaboration play in building national pride and nurturing future champions” Mr. Dadey added.

Beyond its support for the national team, KGL Group has been a firm believer in grassroots sports development. Through the KGL Foundation, the group sponsors the Inter-Regional U-17 Colts Championship, providing young talent from every corner of Ghana the opportunity to fostering young football talent from and creating a strong pipeline for future national teams.

Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams also commended the milestone, “We are thrilled to see corporate giants like KGL Group continue to invest in Ghana’s sports development. This sponsorship is a testament to the power of Ghanaian ingenuity to foster change. “KGL Group’s continuous investment in our national team and sports development is deeply commendable.

Kurt Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), also expressed his gratitude; “KGL’s unwavering commitment to the Black Stars is proof that, together, we can elevate Ghanaian football to greater heights. We are grateful for this partnership and look forward to achieving great success together.”

As KGL Group embarks on this renewed chapter with the Black Stars, the group does so with unwavering pride, deep-rooted values, and a clear vision to help propel Ghanaian sports on the global stage.

The renewal of this noble partnership between KGL and GFA was made possible through the sustained significant efforts of Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, the Sports Minister and John Mahama’s government.

NPP has a chance to win 2028 election if… – Bawumia

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed hope that the party stands a good chance of winning the 2028 elections if they correct their wrongs and stay united.

Dr. Bawumia was addressing NPP grassroots and supporters in Goaso, in the Ahafo Region, on the third day of his nationwide Thank You Tour.

He is being accompanied by the NPP national executives and some of his fellow contenders in the party’s 2024 presidential primary.

According to him, the NPP government under former president Akufo-Addo implemented several policies and interventions to benefit the Ghanaian people.

Ghanaian fashion

He, however, admitted that anger among many Ghanaians over certain government decisions led to the good policies going unrecognised.

He pointed out that Ghanaians voiced similar sentiments when the Kufuor administration left office, but after the NDC took over, they came to appreciate that Kufuor had good intentions for the country.

The former Vice President, therefore, believes that Akufo-Addo will also be remembered the same way.

He said that the NPP still has the track record as the party with many social-centered policies and that with unity and learning from their previous mistakes, they can stage a strong comeback in 2028.

Ghanaian entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Ziega Ghanaian entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Ziega

Ghanaian entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Ziega, has taken a jab at the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, for stating that he would liaise with a colleague to address Nigerian actress Bimbo Ademoye’s concerns about film piracy in Ghana.

During a discussion on United Showbiz on April 27, 2025, Ziega said Sam George’s comment, indicating he would refer the matter to the minister responsible for overseeing television content, suggests he does not fully understand his own job description.

He emphasised that Sam George’s role gives him the power to oversee such a situation therefore the minister was wrong to state that he would channel the situation to a colleague minister.

“Which colleague minister is there to oversee television content? It could be he was writing agency instead of ministry. If that is the case, he should have come to correct the mistake. This is confusing because how can a minister of state do such a thing? He is responsible for such a role.

“President Mahama has changed most of the role and he should be aware. Our communication minister is Sam George and therefore all these things are under him. He is embarrassing us,” he said.

Background

In response to Nigerian actress Bimbo Ademoye’s Instagram rant, in which she tagged him amid accusations that Ghanaian TV stations are stealing and airing her content, Sam George said:

“My attention has been drawn to your post thanks to the tag. I would be raising the issue with my colleague minister responsible for overseeing television content. However, I wish to assure you that our government is very respectful of intellectual property rights and will ensure the protection of same.”

Insufficient boarding facilities forcing some Chemu SHS students to live with partners

Many students are forced to rent rooms near the school Many students are forced to rent rooms near the school

The Headmistress of Chemu Senior High School, Vicentia Annin-Agyei, has raised concerns over the critical shortage of boarding facilities, warning that the lack of accommodation is pushing some students into insecure living arrangements, myjoyonline.com has reported.

She highlighted the growing crisis, explaining that many students are forced to rent rooms near the school due to the lack of boarding options.

“Coming and commuting from home, some of our students are forced to look for homes nearby and rent, just to be able to attend school. This also poses another challenge,” she said.

Annin-Agyei further revealed that, in some cases, students are left with no choice but to live with boyfriends or girlfriends, a situation that exposes them to additional risks.

“Some of them are even living with their boyfriends and girlfriends. We have that challenge,” she said.

She emphasised that such arrangements are often a matter of necessity rather than choice.

“Some are forced into that situation, not because they intended to be in it, but because circumstances have compelled them,” she stated.

The Headmistress also underscored the school’s persistent challenges stemming from inadequate infrastructure.

“As a transitional school, when we say transitional, it means that the whole year group is not in school at the same time. There is always one year group out and two year groups in. It is transitional because the facilities we have are not enough to cater for all our students,” she clarified.

She called for urgent action to improve the facilities, emphasizing that doing so would significantly ease the difficulties students currently face.

“We would urge that these issues be addressed first, so that at least we can curb some of these challenges,” she urged.

Michael Essien and Leyla Hamed during his time at Real Madrid Michael Essien and Leyla Hamed during his time at Real Madrid

When Michael Essien shared a throwback photo this week from his time at Real Madrid, it sparked not just fond memories among fans but also a touching tribute from someone who knew him behind the scenes.

Essien, who spent the 2012–2013 season at Madrid, posted a picture of himself laughing with Cristiano Ronaldo during training, captioned, “Some good moments, innit.”

The post quickly gained traction among fans and former colleagues, but a reply from Moroccan-Spanish journalist Leyla Hamed stood out.

Reflecting on her memories of Essien during his time at the club’s Valdebebas training complex, she warmly wrote:

“You were one of the nicest guys at Valdebebas,” accompanied by a personal photo with him.

Hamed’s tribute highlighted the positive impact Essien had off the pitch during his time in Spain. While his performances for the team are remembered by fans, moments like this show how much he was respected and appreciated by those around the club as well.

Essien joined Real Madrid on loan from Chelsea during the 2012–2013 season, where he reunited with then-manager José Mourinho.

Court throws out NDC’s petition on three parliamentary election results

0

A High Court in Kumasi has thrown out a petition brought by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) aimed at overturning the 2024 parliamentary election results in three constituencies.

The NDC had earlier sought to dispute the declared results, which saw the NPP emerge as victors in Ahafo Ano South West, Obuasi East, and Ahafo Ano North, insisting that its candidates were the rightful winners despite the official recounts and the swearing-in of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament.

The NDC’s legal team had sought to reverse the results on the grounds of irregularities.

However, the legal team for the NPP MPs argued that the NDC petitions were procedurally flawed, noting that the petitioners failed to request a determination of security for costs within the 21-day window after the election results were gazetted: a mandatory requirement under electoral law.

The court ruled that the petitions lacked procedural merit and dismissed them. Additionally, the court imposed financial penalties on the NDC, ordering them to pay GHC10,000 Ghana cedis in the Ahafo Ano North case and 30,000 Ghana cedis each in the Ahafo Ano South West and Obuasi East cases.

Shadrach Obeng Yeboah, the legal counsel for the NPP MPs, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision.

“It’s a victory for my clients. It’s also a victory for the administration of justice. We’re happy that our applications have been granted, it’s a victory for our party,” he said.

Kurt Okraku has addressed key challenges in Ghana football

Kofi Adams is the Minister of Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams is the Minister of Sports and Recreation

Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has expressed support for the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, suggesting that, despite the chaos often surrounding the country’s football scene, Okraku has been doing a commendable job.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Adams acknowledged that Ghana’s football system has faced numerous challenges but insisted that, under Okraku’s leadership, significant wrongs have been corrected.

“As challenging as the [Ghana] football system has been, Kurt Okraku has not done badly. In these circumstances, he has managed to right many wrongs,” Adams said.

The Minister’s comments come at a time when the GFA is facing heavy criticism from fans, particularly due to the poor performances of the Black Stars and the struggles of the once-popular Ghana Premier League.

Adams’ endorsement of Okraku is likely to raise eyebrows among those who believe the state of football in the country continues to deteriorate.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, April 26, 2025, Okraku achieved a significant milestone within African football’s leadership structure by becoming the 2nd Vice-President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

His appointment was confirmed during CAF’s Executive Committee meeting held in Accra. In his new role, Okraku will play a key part in developing major strategies and driving reforms aimed at advancing the future of African football.

The ‘sins’ of the NPP that led to defeat

0

Flag of the New Patriotic Party NPP Flag of the New Patriotic Party NPP

Justin Frimpong Kodua, General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has attributed the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election to key findings in the Mike Oquaye committee report.

Speaking to NPP stakeholders during the Western Region meetings on the opening day of the party’s “Thank You Tour,” led by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kodua emphasised that while the details of the report would remain confidential for “strategic reasons,” certain aspects, particularly the reasons behind the party’s loss, needed to be shared to ensure effective implementation of the committee’s recommendations.

He further stated that the government’s actions and in-actions played a significant role in the party’s electoral defeat.

Among the issues he pointed out were the government’s failure to prioritise key projects in the party’s strongholds, the poor relationship between the government and the party, the arrogance of power, and internal bickering, among others.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has reiterated that certain policies by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government led to their defeat in the 2024 general elections.

He explained that the arrogance of power, which made the government insensitive to the plight of Ghanaians, incurred people’s wrath, causing them to vote against the party in large numbers.

The 2024 NPP flagbearer also indicated that the rising inflation during Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government tenure, as well as the introduction of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy), played a major role in making the party unpopular.

“When you study all the reports we have so far, certain factors are highlighted. These include the high cost of living; the prices of goods and services went up, leaving many Ghanaians struggling. Another factor that was highlighted is the arrogance of power; we were not willing to listen.

“The party members told us to conduct a reshuffle, but after eight years, we didn’t listen. The party members told us they didn’t want the E-levy, but we implemented it. Again, the party members told us that the DDEP would be a major challenge, but we went ahead and implemented it. Things were bad, and we were unable to pay NABCO, those employed under the youth and afforestation programs, caterers, and others who were also not being paid,” he explained, as reported by citinewsroom.com.

The dreams of Ghanaian youth deserve support – Mahama

0

President John Mahama has stated that many young Ghanaians have aspirations that must be supported, a commitment reflected in the government’s Adwumawura programme, which aims to help realise those ambitions.

According to him, “Across Ghana, from our bustling cities to our quiet rural communities, young men and women nurture big dreams. They have powerful ideas, and they possess an unstoppable drive to build better lives for themselves. However, these dreams deserve more than just applause; they deserve action, they deserve opportunity, and they deserve committed support.”

The President added, “It is with this conviction that I made a bold promise ahead of the 2024 election: to prioritise the welfare, economic empowerment, and development of our youth through carefully crafted interventions, including the Adwumawura programme.”

He made these remarks in Kumasi on Monday, 28th April, where he officially launched the initiative.

Mr Mahama described the programme as being just another policy initiative, but as “a declaration of faith in the extraordinary potential of our Ghanaian youth.”

He emphasised that the programme represents the government’s “commitment to nurturing their ideas into thriving enterprises that will drive our nation’s progress.”

The Adwumawura programme is an initiative under the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP).

It is designed to provide start-up capital to young entrepreneurs, offer financial support to existing but struggling ventures, and deliver coaching services to business owners.

The government aims to create 10,000 youth-led businesses each year over a four-year period.

The President expressed optimism that the initiative would help close the unemployment gap and stimulate economic growth through the development of indigenous businesses.

Adwumawura is fully funded, unlike past ‘mirage’ initiatives

0

President John Dramani Mahama has assured that the Adwumawura Programme is fully funded, unlike previous initiatives under Akufo-Addo’s administration, which ultimately proved to be mere mirages.

Speaking at the official launch of the programme on Monday, April 28, President Mahama described it as an ambitious but necessary undertaking for the nation’s development.

He emphasised that Adwumawura Programme would not follow the path of previous initiatives that were announced with much fanfare but ultimately lacked sustainable funding.

The President assured the public that Adwumawura Programme is fully funded, with adequate allocations provided by the Ministry of Finance in the 2025 budget.

“This is an ambitious undertaking. But it’s necessary if we’re to secure a prosperous and resilient future for the youth of Ghana. Let me point out that this programme is not like others that were announced in the recent past, with a lot of fanfare, but proved to be mirages without adequate funding to sustain them.

Adwumawura is fully funded with adequate allocation provided by the Ministry of Finance in the 2025 budget.”

He further explained that the programme is designed to be inclusive, youth-led, and Ghanaian-owned.

“Many big businesses of today were the start-ups and micro enterprises of yesterday. Adwumawura is designed to be inclusive, youth-led, and Ghanaian-owned. And so, you must be a Ghanaian to be part of Adwumawura.”

Government to construct 3.6km Afram River bridge to boost connectivity

Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has announced plans for the construction of a 3.6-kilometer bridge over the Afram River, connecting Ekye-Amanfrom to Adowso in the Eastern Region.

Speaking during a tour of the river on Monday, April 28, 2025, the minister revealed that despite two previous unsuccessful attempts to build the bridge, President John Dramani Mahama has directed that the project must now be delivered under the Big Push initiative.

“Two attempts have been made so far to get that bridge done, but they did not materialize. The President has instructed that under the Big Push, this bridge must be completed to connect the South and the North. The potentials here are great,” Agbodza stated.

He emphasised that the bridge’s design would prioritise cost-effectiveness and local engineering solutions, ensuring durability and efficiency.

“We should deploy the best possible design that is efficient and cheaper, and the consultant responsible will ensure that the quality of work done will outlive us and deliver value,” he added.

The Afram River bridge project is expected to significantly boost agriculture and economic development in the Afram Plains area. It will also support the establishment of a satellite campus for the University of Environment and Sustainable Development.

Governs Agbodza expressed confidence that the bridge would be completed within President Mahama’s current term in office.

“We can do this. If by next year we secure additional support, it would help, but even without it, we are determined to start. Even with all the funding in place, it would typically take two to three years to complete,” he said.

The bridge is considered a critical piece of infrastructure to unlock the potential of the Afram Plains, linking the Eastern, Ashanti, and Oti regions.

The government’s renewed commitment follows two previously failed attempts under earlier administrations.

Perspectives to addressing insider threat issues in the financial sector

0

Cash theft was the most common crime perpetrated, with 274 staff (75%) implicated in 2024 Cash theft was the most common crime perpetrated, with 274 staff (75%) implicated in 2024

The recent Bank of Ghana (BOG) 2024 Fraud Report reveals that the number of staff involved in fraud at Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions (SDIs) increased by 33%, from 274 in 2023 to 365 in 2024.

Cash theft was the most common crime perpetrated, with 274 staff (75%) implicated in 2024, which is up from 211 (77%) in 2023. Although the percentage declined slightly, the actual number rose.

Concerns are being raised due to the consistent and steady increase in staff involvement in fraudulent activities within these financial institutions. In total, 155 staff were dismissed by Banks and SDIs. Of these dismissals, 83 staff (54%) were due to cash theft related fraud.Financial literacy courses

The report notes that only 155 staff, representing 43% of the 365 staff involved in fraudulent activities, were dismissed. This suggests that other implicated staff may be exonerated or given lesser punishments. The difficulty in recovering potential losses due to prolonged legal proceedings also leads institutions to stop pursuing cases.

To address this issue, the BOG has issued directives to Banks and SDIs. These include strengthening internal controls and staff due diligence mechanisms during recruitment, reinforcing continuous in-house training on professional conduct, and ensuring the prosecution of culprits to act as a deterrent. Banks and SDIs are also required to strengthen disciplinary policies and foster a culture of zero tolerance for fraud.

Aside from the directives from the BoG to the Banks and SDIs, e-Crime Bureau strongly recommends that financial institutions urgently implement comprehensive digital monitoring solutions that leverage artificial intelligence to detect unusual employee behavior patterns in real-time.Financial literacy courses

Furthermore, organisations should establish independent whistleblower channels managed by third parties to overcome the cultural barriers that often prevent colleagues from reporting suspicious activities, as peer reluctance to report misconduct remains a significant blind spot in existing fraud prevention frameworks.

Financial institutions must additionally put internal control mechanisms to the test in order to establish their levels of adequacy to prevent, detect and respond to activities that result in the fraud occurrence. This will inform the required amendments to address new modus operandi being adopted by employees.

Banks must develop comprehensive awareness engagement programmes for clients which will enable them understand the levels of risk exposure through the sharing of regular cyber/financial crimes intelligence on the potential loopholes that could result in human compromises that will to the fraud.

Overall, this report is coming at a crucial point that should stair a broader industry collaboration and a deeper assessment of the regulatory regimes that exist in tackling insider related fraud that clearly have a potential of destabilizing the gains being made in other critical aspects of the financial system.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale, has stated that Portuguese football great Cristiano Ronaldo is a better player than Barcelona legend Lionel Messi.

He acknowledged that while Messi possesses exceptional football talent and has achieved remarkable feats globally, he is not his favorite player.

The YEA boss noted that the Real Madrid legend is the player he has admired for a long time since he began following football and watching matches.

Speaking in an interview with GHOne TV, when the journalist asked Basintale to choose between Ronaldo and Messi, he smiled for a moment and responded, “Messi or Ronaldo? Ronaldo.”

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been in a neck-and-neck rivalry for over a decade and a half, showcasing extraordinary quality and sparking an ongoing debate over who is the better footballer and can be considered the Greatest of All Time (GOAT).

Both players have won every major trophy and set numerous records throughout their careers. The only major trophy previously separating the two was the FIFA World Cup.

Messi completed his collection when he led Argentina to victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Goaso, (Ahafo), April 28, GNA – Dr James Ankomah, the Medical Superintendent of the Goaso Municipal Hospital, has appealed for new refrigerators at the facility’s mortuary for body preservation.

He said all the refrigerators at the mortuary were obsolete experiencing mal-functioning and consistent repair works.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Goaso, the regional capital, Dr Ankomah said the mortuary required new refrigerators as soon as possible, saying “our refrigerators are too old to preserve bodies”.

He said the frequent repairs works on the refrigerators were draining the coffers of the hospital, worrying that “sometimes we have spent not less GHC30,000 for repairs”.

“The mortuary is even too old, and we need a new facility to preserve the bodies well”, Dr Ankomah stated.

Why Ghana must reset its public holidays for productivity and economic growth

0

On Thursday, May 1, 2025, Ghana will once again observe May Day as a statutory public holiday. As is customary, many workers will leave their offices by noon on Wednesday, with some not returning until the following Monday. This pattern, common for holidays falling on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, results in significant productivity losses.

These midweek holidays disrupt workflows, as employees often extend their time off by traveling or taking additional unofficial leave, effectively turning a single holiday into a multi-day break. To address this challenge, we should consider realigning our public holidays to fall on Mondays, fostering long weekends that boost both economic activity and worker well-being while minimizing disruptions to productivity.

The Economic Cost of Midweek Holidays

The problem of midweek holidays is not unique to May Day. When holidays like Founder’s Day, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, or Constitutional Day fall on a Tuesday or Thursday, some employees may take the adjacent Monday or Friday off, creating an extended break. For instance, a Tuesday holiday might prompt workers to leave early on Monday or not return until Wednesday, while a Thursday holiday could lead to absences stretching into the following Monday.

This behaviour, while understandable, reduces productive hours, disrupts business operations, and strains economic output. Public holidays falling midweek can reduce GDP contribution from sectors like manufacturing and services by up to 2% for the affected week, as businesses face lower output and increased absenteeism.

Economic Benefits

Beyond boosting productivity, realigning holidays to Mondays offers social and economic benefits. Long weekends provide workers with opportunities for rest, family time, and travel, improving mental health and work-life balance. Studies from the World Health Organization (WHO) suggest that extended weekends reduce workplace stress and burnout, potentially lowering healthcare costs.

Economically, the tourism sector could see significant gains, as Ghanaians are more likely to visit local attractions or hometowns during long weekends. For instance, a 2023 study by the Ghana Tourism Authority found that domestic tourism spending increased by 12% during three-day weekends compared to single-day holidays. This additional revenue could support small businesses and create jobs in rural areas

Learning from Global Practices

Several countries have successfully addressed this issue by scheduling public holidays on Mondays, creating long weekends that benefit both workers and the economy. In the United States, holidays like Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day are fixed on Mondays, ensuring minimal disruption to the workweek. Similarly, Canada observes holidays such as Victoria Day and Canada Day on Mondays when they do not fall on their exact dates. The United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand also adopt this approach for holidays like Bank Holidays and Anzac Day. Research from the OECD shows that long weekends encourage domestic tourism and consumer spending, with countries like Australia seeing a 5-7% increase in retail and hospitality revenue during such periods. For Ghana, aligning holidays with Mondays could stimulate demand in tourism, retail, and transportation sectors, as workers use the extended weekend to travel or engage in leisure activities.

Balancing Tradition and Flexibility

Not all holidays can or should be shifted. Fixed-date holidays tied to cultural, religious, or historical significance—such as New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Adha, Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and Farmers’ Day—must remain on their designated dates to preserve their meaning. However, other holidays, including Constitutional Day, May Day, Republic Day, Founder’s Day, and Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, are more flexible and could be realigned to Mondays without losing their significance.

For example, Constitutional Day, currently observed on January 7, could be moved to the second Monday in January. May Day could become the first Monday in May, Founder’s Day the first Monday in August, and Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day the third Monday in September. Such changes would create predictable long weekends, reducing the likelihood of employees taking additional days off and ensuring a more consistent workweek.

Way forward

To implement this reform, Parliament could amend the Public Holidays (Amendment) Act, 2019 (Act 986) to designate specific Mondays for these movable holidays. The precedent already exists: Farmers’ Day is fixed as the first Friday in December, demonstrating that holidays can be scheduled for consistency. A similar approach could be applied to other holidays, with clear guidelines ensuring that fixed-date holidays remain untouched.
the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture could promote domestic tourism packages tied to these long weekends, maximizing economic impact.

Samira Bawumia Substantially Re-Defined Second Lady Role – Study

0

Former Second Lady, Samira Bawumia

A new research study, published by a reputable and peer-reviewed international journal, has found that Samira Bawumia contributed significantly to the transformation of the Second Lady position during her husband’s tenure as the Vice President.

The study which was published by Drumspeak, the International Journal of Research in the Humanities and co-authored by Prof. G. Etse Sikanku and Dr. Louise Carol Serwaa Donkor, sought to analyse media narratives of the Second Lady among selected credible media houses in Ghana.

Findings indicate that Mrs. Bawumia was perceived as a stabilising force due to her decorous, spousal, motherly,  gentle, no-drama and generally decent  demeanor as second lady. Though she seemed to have fulfilled her traditional role as a Second Lady, the second highest frame unearthed was the social interventionist frame.

This frame pointed to Mrs. Bawumia’s socially minded programmes particularly for young girls, women and children that sought to equip them with skills, inspire and empower them to attain achieve their goals. As Second Lady, Mrs. Bawumia was highly involved in a variety of national and international initiatives that sought to address the welfare of underprivileged girls, the youth and other vulnerable groups in society. It was not surprising that this constituted one of the most prevalent frames discovered by the authors.

Another significant narrative associated with the Second Lady was her political role. In this role the Second Lady was seen as a strong, efficient and eloquent communicator who contributed significantly to campaigns and political communication in the country. It highly substantive political discourse marked a new phase in Ghana’s democracy as it has become evident that second ladies can contributed meaningfully to the democratic politics.

Put together Sikanku and Donkor (2025) conclude that Mrs. Samira Bawumia’s, time as Second Lady was marked by significant change as she did not just limit herself to the stereotypical roles of political spouses but made recognizable impact as an engaging, vocal and socially oriented advocate.

She was a very visible and effective figure on the campaign trail and also an impactful second lady.

This research demonstrates that she personifies an era of extraordinary change in the role of second ladies through her unique and multitasking roles as a force of dignity, stability but also a crucible agent of change, social welfare and public advocacy.

In terms of contribution to knowledge and the usefulness of the study authors Sikanku and Donkor write that “this research will contribute to knowledge on the reportage of high-profile political spouses, particularly the position of the Second Lady, which although elevated or expanded in stature, has not seen corresponding academic scrutiny. This study not only fills an important gap in academic literature as it constitutes one of the earliest studies of media representation of the position of second ladies in Ghana, but also further contributes to the literature on framing and coverage of female public figures by using media from a less studied jurisdiction thereby expanding knowledge on spousal political framing and leadership.”

In a political space which is sometimes filled with drama, controversy and scandals, Mrs. Bawumia’s non- scandal and highly respectable time as Second Lady, evidently demonstrated through the media analysis, shows that she continues to be an exemplary Second Lady through her conduct and by so doing elevated the public participation of women in politics through her eloquent and energetic participation in political campaigns, governance, social intervention programmes and advocacy.

‘Ignore Them’ – Franklin Cudjoe Slams GBA for Lack of Credibility Amid CJ Suspension

0

Franklin Cudjoe, the Founding President of IMANI Africa, has criticized the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) over their recent call for President John Dramani Mahama to reverse the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as per reports from Modern Ghana

Cudjoe expressed his disappointment with the GBA’s lack of serious engagement, claiming that the association has failed to act as a credible voice over the past eight years of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

In a post shared on Facebook on April 28, Cudjoe took aim at the GBA’s silence during critical moments, particularly regarding the exclusion of the Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi (SALL) constituencies from the 2020 parliamentary elections.

He wrote, “The GBA has not been a serious and credible voice these past eight years. I heard no word on the SALL debacle from them. Ignore them!!”

Cudjoe’s comments were echoed by Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, Deputy Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Builsa South.

In his own post on the same day, Dr. Apaak criticized the GBA as a “seasonal” entity that only speaks out when the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is in power.

He emphasized that President Mahama, acting within his constitutional rights, would not be swayed by the GBA’s position.

“If the GBA believes he has broken any laws, the courts are there,” he remarked, suggesting that the issue should be resolved through legal channels.

Stand-off between PM and spy chief exposes Israel’s deepening rifts

0

The stand-off between Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and the head of the Shin Bet domestic intelligence agency, Ronen Bar, has further intensified, with each man accusing the other of lies or inaccuracies in sworn depositions.

Netanyahu announced the dismissal of Bar last month, but the attorney general and the opposition have appealed against the move to the Supreme Court, which has effectively frozen it for now.

On Sunday, Netanyahu issued an affidavit for the court, in which he described Bar as a liar.

It followed an affidavit from Bar a few days earlier, in which he had accused the prime minister of demanding personal loyalty and ordering the Shin Bet to spy on anti-government protesters.

Israelis have protested last month against the prime minister’s decision to sack Bar and resume the Gaza war

The confrontation has further exposed the deepening rifts in Israeli politics and society between the right-wing and hardliners supporting Netanyahu and the more liberal elements in the country, who took to the streets to protest against the government’s moves to curb the powers of the judiciary for many months before the Hamas-led 7 October 2023 attacks that sparked the Gaza war.

It centres on Netanyahu’s insistence that he fired the Shin Bet head for professional failures.

Bar has countered by saying that his dismissal was motivated by political and personal considerations.

In his affidavit last week, the spy chief said that it was “clear” that if there were to be a constitutional crisis, Netanyahu would expect him to obey the prime minister and not the courts.

He also said Netanyahu had put pressure on him to use the Shin Bet to spy on Israelis leading or providing financial support to anti-government protests.

Many in Israel reacted with alarm, saying it was evidence of what appeared to be an unprecedented effort to overstep the powers of the domestic intelligence agency.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (C) says he fired Bar for professional failures

Now in his affidavit, which functions as a form of rebuttal, Netanyahu in his turn excoriated the Shin Bet head.

“The accusation according to which I allegedly demanded action against innocent civilians, or against a non-violent and legitimate protest during the protests of 2023, is an absolute lie,” he said.

Netanyahu also trained his sights on the security failures in the lead-up to and during the 7 October attacks, saying that Bar bore “massive and direct responsibility” for them and had “failed in his role as chief of Shin Bet and lost the confidence of the entire Israeli government as far as his ability to continue to manage the organisation”.

Bar immediately responded in kind in a statement, saying Netanyahu’s affidavit was “full of inaccuracies, biased quotes and half-truths aimed at taking things out of context and changing reality”.

EPA A supporter of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hold up a picture of him and a banner saying "I'm with you", at a protest outside the Supreme Court in Jerusalem (8 April 2025)
Netanyahu’s supporters have held counter-protests outside the Supreme Court

To make its ruling on the dismissal of Bar, the Supreme Court may have to make a choice between which of the two conflicting affidavits it deems to be more credible.

Or the court may seek to defuse the crisis to some extent by finding a mechanism and a date by which Bar might agree to step down,

But the issues which have been exposed in the fierce recriminations between the two men have once again focused attention on the increasing bitterness between opposed sections of Israeli society.

These have been further exacerbated by the ever-growing fault line between those who support Netanyahu and his hard-line government in wanting to continue the war in Gaza to eliminate Hamas at all costs, and those who believe the fate of the living Israeli hostages still being held by Hamas must be put first, even if it means ending the war.

Annie Macaulay corrects fan who addressed her by ‘Idibia’

Nigerian actress Annie Macaulay Nigerian actress Annie Macaulay

A video of Annie Macaulay correcting a fan for calling her by the surname of her estranged husband, 2Baba, has surfaced on social media.

This development follows Annie’s recent public announcement on Instagram that she has dropped the surname “Idibia” amid her ongoing divorce from 2Baba.

Annie clearly asked fans and followers to refer to her as “Nwana Macaulay” from now on, rather than using her estranged husband’s surname, “Idibia.”

In the new video, a ‘stubborn’ fan spotted Annie at the Headies Awards and loudly yelled her name in the crowd as “Annie Idibia.”

Unable to hide her disapproval, Annie quickly corrected the fan, saying, “It’s Annie Macaulay.”

In a separate development, while presenting an award on stage, Annie mistakenly introduced herself as “Idibia” but quickly corrected herself in front of the crowd.

2Baba’s divorce announcement

On January 26, 2025, 2Baba took to his Instagram stories to disclose that he and Annie had been separated for some time and had officially filed for divorce.

The couple’s 12-year marriage has constantly been under public scrutiny, especially due to recurring allegations of infidelity involving 2Baba.

All advice on failing economy under NPP fell on their deaf ears – Dr Asah-Asante

0

Flag of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flag of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

Political scientist, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has reinforced the view that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections was primarily due to economic mismanagement and the arrogance of power.

His remarks follow admissions by the NPP’s 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who recently outlined several reasons for the party’s electoral loss.

Speaking during the launch of his nationwide ‘Thank You Tour’ at the Takoradi Technical University, Dr Bawumia cited the high cost of living, the refusal to reshuffle government officials, the controversial E-Levy, the domestic debt exchange programme (DDEP), and internal divisions as key factors.

He also dismissed claims that religious biases were the primary cause of the defeat.

Reacting on the Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Dr Asah-Asante said the factors mentioned by Dr Bawumia were long known to the public and had been consistently highlighted by political analysts.

He emphasised that the NPP’s defeat was rooted in widespread indiscipline in managing the economy, coupled with an unwillingness to heed advice.

According to him, the economy was problematic, which needed to be fixed, but the NPP ignored all calls.

Dr Asah-Asante stressed that in Ghanaian politics, the economy remains the number one factor influencing voter behaviour.

He said, “I think those who are saying that this was really, they were spoken to about this and they all advised along fell on their deaf ears, they are right. Right, in the sense that these were things that we pointed out. That there’s a problem about the economy, they said, no, everybody is facing economic problems, and that let’s even look at Russia and Ukraine.”

They attributed every problem to Russia and Ukraine. What is even laughable is the fact that they forgot or they refused to admit that some of the problems, even though I can see that, yes, you still have some of the problems attributed to a Russian-Ukraine crisis.”

“But what about the one that they themselves caused? That one, they were not honest to admit that. So they pushed everything to Russia and Ukraine, and people were telling them about the way they mismanaged the economy. The way they were indisciplined with their financial dealings. The way they were not ready to accept ideas in the area of economics, and the rest of them,” he said.

He continued: “And what I think now, I mean, the reality has gone on there now. There’s always a reward and punishment, and when they give you what is good and you refuse, you are punished. When you make use of it, you are rewarded. And that is going to help you to champion your cause. That’s it. All that Dr Bawumia is saying, we know already. And people like us saw that and we started talking about it.”

Dr Asah-Asante noted, “If you look at my conversation, I’ve always said that if you read the literature about voter choices, things that influence voters in this country, there are a number of them. And number one is the economy. Irrespective of somebody’s political ideology, political inclination and whatever they believe in, the economy is paramount to every Ghanaian voter. So when the economy goes down, it’s going to affect everybody. And people vote, number one, based on what?

“Because, when the economy improves, it influences every part of the Ghanaian political space. It rubs off on everybody and improves the lives of everybody. So once you allow the economy to slip through your fingers, you are gone, and you are oblivious to that fact. Most of the things you said were basically things which are economic in nature. So it tells you that the economy was problematic. They needed to fix that. They forgot about that.”

Arsenal offer Thomas Partey contract extension until 2026

Arsenal has officially offered Thomas Partey a new contract that would keep him at the Emirates Stadium until 2026, with an option to extend for another year, until 2027, according to Nico Sciarra.

The Ghanaian midfielder, who has returned to consistent form in recent months, remains a key figure in Mikel Arteta’s plans.

Multiple sources report that Arsenal views Partey as an important part of their midfield setup for the next season, despite ongoing discussions about strengthening the squad.

Partey’s current deal was set to expire in 2025, but the Gunners are keen to secure his future early.

His experience, composure, and tactical intelligence continue to make him a vital asset, especially as Arsenal aims to maintain their competitive edge both domestically and in Europe.

Negotiations are still ongoing, but there is optimism from both sides that an agreement will be reached, securing Partey’s place at the heart of Arsenal’s ambitions for years to come.

The midfielder has scored four goals in 32 Premier League appearances during the 2024/25 season.

2Face’s Mother Embraces Singer’s New Partner After Initial Opposition

0

Face

Nigerian music legend 2Face Idibia and his new partner, Natasha Osawaru, appear to have gained the approval of his mother, Rose Idibia, months after a highly publicized family dispute.

A recently circulated video shows the couple sharing warm moments with 2Face’s mother and other family members, signaling a resolution to their earlier tensions.

The development comes after Rose Idibia had strongly opposed her son’s relationship with Natasha earlier this year. In February, the family had even filed a petition with Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS), reporting 2Face missing after he left home in lounge wear and became unreachable. At the time, Rose publicly pleaded with Natasha to “leave my son alone,” particularly objecting to traditional beads the younger woman had placed on 2Face, which she believed indicated he wasn’t acting of his own free will.

Natasha had defended the beads as representing her family’s royal heritage. Meanwhile, social media videos showed 2Face appearing content in Natasha’s company during the period he was reportedly missing.

The apparent reconciliation marks a significant turnaround from those tense months. In the new video, the family, including Rose, are seen celebrating together with Natasha present – a stark contrast to the earlier petitions and public statements.

2Face, who confirmed his relationship with Natasha in January following his separation from actress Annie Idibia, has maintained that his new romance wasn’t the cause of his marriage breakdown. The relationship appears to be growing stronger, with Natasha recently adopting the Idibia surname on her Instagram profile.

This family resolution follows a pattern in 2Face’s personal life being intensely scrutinized by the public. The singer’s romantic relationships have frequently made headlines throughout his decades-long career, though this latest chapter suggests a peaceful resolution to what began as a very public family disagreement. The video of the joyful gathering offers closure to the saga that had captivated Nigerian entertainment circles earlier this year.

Family approval holds significant cultural weight in Nigerian society, particularly for public figures. The visible reconciliation may pave the way for greater acceptance of 2Face’s new relationship among his wider fan base and the public that has followed his personal journey as closely as his musical career. As the situation stabilizes, attention may now shift back to the musical legacy of one of Africa’s most celebrated entertainers.

Mahama directs design and construction of Ekye-Amanfrom Adowso bridge under Big Push Agenda

President Mahama has directed the Road Minister, Governs Kwame Agbodza to design and construct the bridge from Ekye-Amanfrom to Adowso over the Afram river under his flagship Big Push agenda.

Construction of the 3.6 kilometer bridge and over a 100 kilometer of roads has failed twice as previous government was unable to operationalize its construction to open up the Afram plains linking three regions; Eastern, Ashanti and Oti.
