Upside Down: I did music to be heard

0

Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus and currently the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, has revealed that his entry into music was motivated by a deep desire to be heard and to influence national discourse.

Speaking on Upside Down on Channel One TV on Sunday, May 4, A Plus explained that music served as a platform for him to amplify his voice and express his views on political and governance issues in the country.

“Doing music for me was just to have a voice to be able to express myself and be able to send a certain message across. That was the reason why I did music,” he said.

A Plus is widely known for politically-charged songs that boldly criticised public officials and governance systems. Among his popular tracks are Mframa in 2012 and Abɛn Bɛ Bom, which was produced by Appietus and released on September 2, 2016.

“I did all those songs because I wanted to be heard,” he reiterated.

According to A Plus, his leadership and activism began long before his music or political career. Reflecting on his days at Breman Secondary School, he recounted how he led a peaceful student protest that brought electricity to the campus for the first time.

“In school, I was a leader. When I went to Breman Asikuma Secondary School, I organised a demonstration to bring electricity to campus, the same electricity that they enjoy today, I brought it to the school. The school was not connected to the national grid, so I organised a demonstration,” he recalled.

He added that the nature of the protest left a strong impression on local authorities due to its discipline and constructive aim.

“I remember that the District Chief Executive came on campus and said that this is the first time she has seen students demonstrate something in the school because we did not destroy anything,” A Plus noted.

Divided Romania holds re-run of presidential election

0

While polling suggests George Simion of the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) party has the best prospects, none of the 11 candidates is expected to win an absolute majority straight away, meaning a run-off is likely.

Polling stations open at 6 am (0400 GMT) and close at 8 pm.

If necessary, a run-off between the two best-placed candidates in the first round would be held on May 18.

In the initial election in November, pro-Russian candidate Călin Georgescu won the first round, having campaigned largely on the online platform TikTok.

However, shortly before the scheduled run-off vote, the Constitutional Court annulled the first round due to irregularities in campaign financing.

Georgescu was also banned from running for president again and has been under investigation by the public prosecutor’s office since February for making false statements about his campaign financing.

It is unclear from advance polling who might emerge in second place after Sunday’s vote. Centre-right National Liberal Party (PNL) candidate Crin Antonescu, conservative-liberal Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan and former social-democratic prime minister Victor Ponta are all seen as possible contenders.

Favourite Simion says his aim is to ensure “justice” for Georgescu if he wins the election. He has not ruled out helping Georgescu into the office of prime minister.

In Romania, the president also shapes foreign and security policy.

I’m with NDC for the long term; Mahama has good intentions – A Plus

0

Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has declared his unwavering support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stating that he envisions a long-term association with the party.

Speaking on Upside Down on Channel One TV on Sunday, May 4, the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central revealed that he has no plans of switching allegiance anytime soon.

“I am a member of the NDC. I have never inherited enemies. For now, I am enjoying my time with the majority. I see myself being a member of the majority for a very long time,” he stated.

A Plus dismissed suggestions that his loyalty to the party should be judged based on formal membership or possession of a party card, insisting that his actions and alignment speak for themselves.

“If I say I am a member of the NDC, they would say I don’t have a party card, but I am with the majority,” he added.

He went on to commend the leadership of the NDC, particularly highlighting the vision and intentions of President John Dramani Mahama.

“I believe that they have an amazing leader and a great guy. He has good intentions for this country,” A Plus remarked.

I wished I could finish the amphitheatres before leaving office – Okraku-Mantey

0

Mark Okraku-Mantey, former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, has said in a recent interview on Joy FM that one of the projects he wished he could complete before leaving office was the amphitheatres.

He told Kwame Dadzie on Showbiz A-Z that the construction of the amphitheatres, which was his idea, stalled due to insufficient funding.

“[I wish I could finish] the amphitheatres because we would have added that to President Akufo-Addo’s CV. Yes, it is still his CV because he built it. Even as we exited, he got the budget, the money is there to finish it so it is still President Akufo-Addo’s achievement but I would have loved to finish for him to open, launch, commission in his name like President Rawlings did to the National Theatre,” he said.

When Mark was asked what prevented him from a building the amphitheatres, he said “it was budget issues.”

He added that he was happy Abla Dzifa Gomashie, a creative arts person, is the minister in charge of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts now because she would understand the needs of creatives better as the main minister and not a deputy.

Okraku-Mantey said things would be different if he were the main minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture in Akufo-Addo’s administration.

“The job of a follower is to also manage your leader which is your boss. What he believes in, you also believes in it. My job is to convince him, persuade him, talk him into seeing the amphitheatre concept. The love for it will not be the same as the one who midwifed the concept.

So if it was my baby directly and I was the one taking decisions for money, maybe the amphitheatre would have come before some of the other projects,” he said.

The amphitheatre idea was birthed after the NPP failed to provide ultra modern theatres for nine regions as promised. They rather resolved to establish five amphitheatres in five cities: Kumasi, Tema, Accra, Takoradi and Tamale but none of them was completed before the New Patriotic Party left power on January 7, 2025.

According to Mark an amount of about 2.5 million dollars from the World Bank did not suffice for the five projects so they had to go for an extra amount of about 700,000 dollars, which he claims is still available for the new government to use.

Put it Inside My Pocket- Brother Sammy Begs Rich Man To Put Money Throwing At Him At A Program Inside His Pocket

Controversial Ghanaian Gospel musician, Broda Sammy aka “The Nation’s Worshipper” has made it into the trends after his recent performance at a funeral.

The Nation’s worshipper, as he is affectionately called, appeared at the final funeral rites of the late mother of Okyeame Akwadaa Nyame, the official PRO of Ghanaian actor who doubles as a musician and movie producer, Kwadwo Nkansah, known popularly as Lilwin.

Table of Men became biased, ignored Nacee in 2024

Entertainment Pundit, MC Yaa Yeboah Entertainment Pundit, MC Yaa Yeboah

Entertainment pundit, MC Yaa Yeboah, has commented on the operations of the Table of Men, a group established to promote gospel music in Ghana.

According to her, the group has gradually become biased over the gospel artistes they chose to support.

“The Table of Men initiative was set up to push and promote gospel music in the country as well as advocate for funding and support. So, we needed certain people to do that advocacy.

“These gospel people coming together to push that agenda was a brilliant idea. But recently, it has gotten to a point where they were supporting their own people and ignoring others,” MC Yaa Yeboah said on United Showbiz on May 3, 2025.

Yeboah then pointed out what she observed as the group’s treatment of popular gospel musician, Nacee, who she said was ignored by the group despite having a major hit song, ‘Aseda,’ in 2024.

“Nacee was a victim in 2024. We needed Table of Men to push and promote Nacee, but we never heard anything even though ‘Aseda’ was one of the biggest gospel songs of the year,” she disclosed.

She contrasted this with the group’s previous support for artistes like Piesie Esther, stating that the group had a habit of favoritism.

“If they wanted gospel musicians to come to them first before they offer their support, they should have made it a clause. But it became like a selfish thing where Table of Men only promoted people they liked and ignored others,” Yeboah added.

MC Yaa Yeboah also touched on broader issues within the gospel music industry, pointing out a lack of unity and support among artistes.

“It seems there is no love in the gospel music industry. Some of the artistes within the industry do not see others as gospel artistes. Someone even said that gospel music and secular music collaborations are ‘noise,’” she remarked.

She concluded by expressing hope for a more inclusive and unbiased approach from the Table of Men in the future.

“If they come back and do it well, without any bias or favouritism, it will go far,” Yeboah stated.

The Table of Men (ToM) is a voluntary advocacy group in Ghana, established to support gospel musicians by addressing industry challenges and promoting their work.

Comprised of influential media and music executives, ToM has been instrumental in elevating gospel artistes within the Ghanaian music landscape.

Notably, ToM played a pivotal role in the campaigns that led to Joe Mettle becoming the first gospel artiste to win the Artiste of the Year award at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) in 2017, and Diana Hamilton securing the same accolade in 2021.

However, recent developments have seen ToM on a hiatus. Kwesi Ernest, a prominent member of the group, disclosed that ToM is currently on recess to realign and refocus its objectives.

He emphasised that the group is not a public relations entity for gospel artistes but rather a support system that collaborates with artistes who actively seek their assistance.

Take elevated industry beyond Ghana’s borders

0

Professor Charles Tortoe, a Committee Member of the Ghana Beverage Awards (GBA), has challenged the local beverage industry to set standards in the hospitality industry and shine beyond Ghana’s borders.

Although the industry was growing, he said it was crucial for the industry and its professionals to take the culture of Ghana through its taste to many parts of the globe.

Prof. Tortoe made the call at the celebration of the 2024 Ghana Beverage Awards, by the Global Media Alliance in Accra.

The celebration, which is the ninth edition, was on the theme: “Inspiring Excellence in Ghana’s Beverage Industry.”

He said the judging process for the selection of winners was rigorous and highly competitive.

The criteria for selection of winners included the taste, market presence, consumer engagement, commitment to sustainability and excellence, and branding of the beverage or product.

The Committee Member said the status of the beverage industry was a true reflection of an industry growing everyday and particularly exciting was the Bar of the year and Bartender of the year categories added to this year’s awarding scheme.

The new categories, he explained celebrated the dynamic space and skills of professionals who created unforgettable experience for consumers everyday.

“The wonderful creativity of the professionals and their flair for consumer service made selecting the awardee difficult,” he said and commended the awardees for promoting the industry.

Mr Ernest Boateng, the Chief Executive Officer, Global Media Alliance, said excellence was intentional, born from vision, sustained by innovation and realised through hardwork.

The GBA, he said was about honouring the entire value chain from the distiller, and marketer to the bartender.

He said consumers were interested in experiencing culture though what they ate and the world was ready to taste what Ghana had to offer.

“The President of Ghana said, when we are happy we drink and when we are not happy, we drink, so how can you sell alcohol and run at a loss.

“It’s an industry alive with possibilities, driven by talent, and sustained by positivity,” he said.

Mr Boateng said the innovation, commitment and tenacity of the awardees inspired them to keep contributing to the promotion of the Ghana Beverage industry through the awards.

Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts in a speech read on her behalf by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Maame Afua Houadjeto, said the award ceremony was not just to celebrate the winners but to honour the collective effort of the people behind the vibrant beverage industry whose hardwork continued to refresh everyone and build the nation.

She said it was more than a sector and a symbol of ingenuity, entrepreneurial spirit and cultural riches that created vital role in value addition and tourism promotion.

The beverages made in Ghana, she said, told a story of the land, the people, while their flavours told a story of the cultures.

“As they work to position Ghana as a preferred destination for business and traveling, the beverages deliver a true authentic experience and nurtures an ecosystem of consumer excellence that promotes tourism.

“When the boys boys meet, its to drink and chill. When the girls girls meet, it is to chat and drink. At every occasion, we chat, we drink and we connect,” she said.

Gomashie called on the entire value chain to join hands with government to shape a future whether locally made beverages were enjoyed at home and showcased proudly to the world as symbols of Ghanaians creativity, quality and culture.

Bel-Cola by Blow Chem Industries emerged the Beverage Product of the Year, with Happy Delight Fruit Drink as the Fruit drink of the year.

‘I was really disappointed’ – OliveTheBoy on missing out on 2024 TGMA Best New Artiste award

Afrobeats artiste, OliveTheBoy Afrobeats artiste, OliveTheBoy

Popular Ghanaian Afrobeats artist, OliveTheBoy, has stated that he was disappointed after missing out on the New Artiste of the Year award at the 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).

The ‘Good Sin’ hitmaker was nominated for the category alongside Banzy Banero, DSL, Maya Blu, Oseikrom Sikanii, etc, but lost to King Paluta.

In an interview on Channel One TV on May 3, 2025, the Asylum hitmaker confessed, “I was really disappointed, I’m not going to lie, but I think it is what it is.”

Despite the setback, he remains optimistic, especially with his five TGMA nominations in 2025, including ‘Popular Song of the Year’ for ‘Asylum’ and Best Collaboration of the Year for ‘Favourite Story’, featuring King Promise and Sarkodie.

OliveTheBoy, born Joel Ofori Bonsu, also reflected on the making of his 2025 hit collaboration, ‘Favourite Story’, calling the high-profile collaboration “a blessing.”

He explained that the opportunity came unexpectedly after meeting King Promise at a show in 2024.

“King Promise didn’t initially reach out to me for the project. But when we met, I learnt he was working on an album and needed a quick feature. I had just a few hours to record my verse,” he said.

Rather than feeling pressured, the rising star saw the tight deadline as motivation.

“The limited time didn’t hinder me but rather encouraged me to show the world what I have within,” he said.

Since its release, ‘Favourite Story’ has become a fan favourite, further cementing OliveTheBoy’s place in Ghana’s music scene.

Impact of illegal mining on cocoa production; COCOBOD takes steps to protect cocoa trees

0

Some cocoa farms are being destroyed by illegal mining Some cocoa farms are being destroyed by illegal mining

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) is taking steps to engage the Attorney General’s Department as part of efforts to amend existing laws protecting cocoa trees from destruction, Dr Randy Abbey, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), has announced.

The move seeks to ensure stringent punishment for perpetrators in the face of the increasing destruction of cocoa trees across the country by illegal miners, whose activities continue to threaten the cocoa sector, which remains the backbone of the economy.

Speaking at a farmers’ rally to mark the 2025 “May Day” at Nkawie in the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality, the COCOBOD CEO expressed concern over the alarming rate at which illegal miners are taking over cocoa farms because the existing laws protecting the cash crop are not punitive enough.

“The cocoa tree is not protected, and that is why people can indiscriminately cut cocoa trees under the pretext of mining,” Dr Abbey lamented.

He said just as minerals found anywhere in Ghana are held in trust by the President for the people, there must be laws to prevent the unjustifiable destruction of cocoa trees.

“Apart from rehabilitation of moribund and diseased cocoa farms, which are implemented under the supervision of COCOBOD, no one has the right to cut down cocoa trees for any reason,” the CEO emphasised.

He hinted that the proposed legal reforms would also make it illegal for cocoa farmers to lease or sell their farms for mining or other unauthorised purposes.

He noted that the outdated nature of current laws allows individuals to acquire prospecting permits, which they then exploit to invade and destroy cocoa farms.

“These laws have long outlived their relevance and no longer reflect the realities on the ground. We urgently need to revise them to protect the cocoa sector from further decline, Dr Abbey emphasised.

He reaffirmed COCOBOD’s commitment to shielding the industry from the destructive impact of illegal mining and called on cocoa farmers to resist the lure of quick financial gains from miners.

According to him, farmers have a duty to support the national economy and preserve their lands as a legacy for future generations.

Dr Abbey called for the cooperation of all stakeholders as COCOBOD embarks on a new direction to restore and sustain Ghana’s cocoa industry

Advans Ghana, Turaco & Enterprise Insurance support Kantamanto traders after fire

0

Three pioneering financial institutions—Advans Ghana, Turaco Inclusive Ghana (T/A Turaco), and Enterprise Insurance LTD—have come together to deliver GH¢8.4 million in recovery support to affected traders of the Kantamanto market fire.

Through their longstanding microinsurance partnership, which began in 2010, the trio provided timely financial relief to 227 small and medium enterprise (SME) owners whose businesses were devastated by the fire.

The payout helped clear outstanding loans and delivered immediate cash support for rebuilding efforts, providing a crucial safety net at a time of immense need.

Kantamanto Market, one of Accra’s busiest commercial hubs, suffered severe destruction, leaving hundreds of informal traders in financial distress. But for many insured through Advans Ghana and Turaco’s embedded insurance product—underwritten by Enterprise Insurance—the road to recovery has been faster, debt-free, and dignified.

At Advans, we are intentional about embedding insurance into our services so our customers are protected in moments like these,” said Guillaume Valence, CEO of Advans Ghana. “This payout demonstrates the power of building financial resilience in advance.”

The initiative underscores how strategic partnerships in microinsurance can offer tangible solutions to the risks faced by Ghana’s informal sector.

Turaco Ghana’s General Manager, Leona Abban, noted, “Microinsurance is a customer-centric service that makes financial protection accessible to the most vulnerable. The Kantamanto response shows that seamless delivery and collaboration can turn risk into resilience.”

Enterprise Insurance’s Managing Director, Akosua Ansah-Antwi, emphasized the value of responsive underwriting in delivering impactful insurance: “Our support for this partnership reflects our commitment to protecting Ghana’s SMEs from unpredictable risks.”

The intervention also caught the attention of regulators. Bernard Ohemeng-Baah, Deputy Commissioner of the National Insurance Commission (NIC), lauded the model and affirmed continued regulatory support for inclusive insurance innovations.

“This payout is a strong demonstration of the role insurance can play in economic resilience. SMEs are the backbone of our economy, and they must be protected,” he said.

Beyond insurance payouts, Advans Ghana further reinforced its commitment by donating GH¢20,000 worth of building materials to aid traders in reconstructing their stalls.

It also introduced a “Restart Offer,” which includes a payment grace period and a 10% interest rate reduction for select clients to support long-term recovery.

With over 200,000 customers already covered through the Advans-Turaco partnership, the Kantamanto intervention is now being hailed as a model for scaling financial protection for Ghana’s SMEs—ensuring that one disaster doesn’t erase a lifetime of work.

0

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe says Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia lacks the independence and boldness needed to lead the NPP, urging a leadership reset ahead of the 2028 elections.

Founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has criticized former Vice-President and 2024 presidential candidate of the party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, asserting that he lacks the leadership qualities required to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections.

Research Scientists call for investments in Malaria research and elimination

0

By Eunice Hilda A. Mensah

Accra, May 4, GNA – Dr Elias Asuming-Brempong, the Acting Head of Department, Biomedical and Public Health Research Unit (BPHRU), Water Research Institute, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, has called for investments into malaria research and it’s elimination.

He said although there had been significant improvement in data recorded, the condition still needed dire attention to eliminate it like other African countries.

He made the call at the commemoration of this year’s World Malaria Day by his Department on the global theme: “From Bites to Breakthroughs – Reinvest, Reimagine, and Reignite” and the sub-theme, “Sharing Concepts of Disease Prevention and Control to Reignite Investments in Malaria Research” in Accra.

Dr Asuming-Brempong said Sub Sahara Africa bore 94 per cent of disease burden and had over two million death cases of malaria, with over 80 per cent of the deaths among children under five years.

In recent years, he said there had been efforts to reduce the burden in the region including Ghana, however, it had slowed down.

“So we are trying to reignite the passion and desire to see malaria driven away and kicked out for a malaria-free Ghana and Africa,” he noted.

One of the efforts, he said was the development of vaccines to fight the diseases, out of which the RTS,S vaccine had between 30 to 40 per cent efficacy.

The expectation for an effective and more vaccines, he said was growing, however there had to be a concerted effort with a number of strategies implemented to kick malaria out of the country.

Dr Akua Kyerewaa Botwe, a Malaria Expert and Research Scientist, BPHRU of the WRI, CSIR, speaking on the topic: “Malaria Vaccine Innovations for Prevention and Control”, said 130 malaria vaccines were at different stages of development globally, out of which 90 per cent targeted plasmodium falciparum, the most violent of all the species.

He said parasites could become resistant to any vaccine with time, hence the relevance of more investments for research to target the root causes of malaria and fight towards its elimination.

Dr Betty Bandoh Oppong, a Research Scientist, CSIR WRI, said the current malaria interventions in Ghana were the distribution of long lasting insecticide nets, indoor residual spraying, and larval source management.

The rest are malaria vaccine RTS,S, intermittent preventive treatment for pregnant women, seasonal malaria chemoprevention, case management diagnosis and treatment (test, treat and track).

She defined malaria elimination as the interruption of a local transmission of a specified malaria parasite species in a defined geographical area as a result of deliberate action according the World Health Organization.

As part of the 14 countries that had achieved the elimination, she said were four African countries – Cape Verde, Egypt, Lesotho and Algeria, stating that Ghana could achieve same.

To achieve this, she called on research institutions to support research in malaria, fund projects on malaria (surveillance, vaccine research) and equip the labs to make it useful for top notch malaria research.

She encouraged researchers to seek for collaborative projects in malaria, educate people on malaria and write educational reviews on malaria for the media as a way of education.

Speaking on the roles of individuals in malaria elimination, Dr Oppong admonished everyone to adhere to the malaria preventive measures.

They include keeping a clean environment, using insecticide treated bed-nets, completing antimalarial medication when sick after testing all suspected cases first, protecting children from severe malaria with vaccination and reigniting the talk on malaria (prevention, treatment, elimination), she said, adding: “Malaria elimination is possible and starts with you!”

Match Report: Asante Kotoko hold Hearts of Oak to a goalless draw

0

Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko battled to a goalless draw in a fiercely contested Premier League match at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday May 4, 2025.

Despite both sides creating numerous chances, neither could find the breakthrough in a match that was high on intensity but short on clinical finishing.

Coming into the encounter on the back of three consecutive defeats to their archrivals, Hearts of Oak were under significant pressure, especially amid a lacklustre season.

Asante Kotoko, enjoying a more stable campaign, started the brighter of the two and asserted early dominance in the opening exchanges.

By the eighth minute, Kotoko had already threatened from two corners, although their headed efforts lacked precision.

Defender Kelvin Osei Asibey made a crucial intervention to deny Kotoko a one-on-one opportunity, while Hearts goalkeeper Benjamin Asare was called into action multiple times in the first half, producing several key saves to keep the hosts level.

Hearts finished the first half the stronger of the two sides, showing greater urgency and cohesion heading into the break.

Despite Hearts of Oak edging possession with 51% and Kotoko registering more attempts on goal (10 to 5), both teams ultimately lacked the clinical edge required to claim all three points.

The draw sees Asante Kotoko maintain their position in fourth place, while Hearts of Oak remain sixth on the table.

For Hearts, the result further dims their already faint title hopes, while Kotoko continue to chase a top-three finish in what remains of the season.

Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness to host national agribusiness dialogue

Accra, May 4, GNA – The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, led by the sector Minister, Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, is preparing to organise a high-level national agribusiness dialogue.

The major event, expected to come off in June, is aimed at restructuring and revitalising Ghana’s agribusiness ecosystem.

The dialogue is to provide a national platform where stakeholders across the agribusiness value chain can collaboratively shape the future of the sector by contributing to the development of a National Agribusiness Strategy.

As part of preparations for the strategic engagement, the Minister convened a stakeholder planning session, whichbrought together industry experts, private sector players, financial institutions, policymakers, academia, and development partners.

They shared their insights and strategised to promote growth and prosperity for businesses in the sector.

The dialogue will mark a significant step towards positioning agribusiness as a key driver of economic growth, job creation, and sustainable industrial development in Ghana.

Madam Ofosu-Adjare told the meeting that the National Agribusiness Dialogue would serve as a platform to reset Ghana’s agribusiness sector toward inclusive and sustainable growth.

She commended stakeholders for their commitment to the sector and stated that it was important that the dialogue would generate lasting solutions to the persistent challenges hindering the agribusiness sector.

ECG restores power after Achimota Bulk Supply Station fire

0

Electricity supply has been restored in parts of Accra after a fire incident at the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) Achimota Bulk Supply Point, Station ‘H’, disrupted power supply on Sunday, May 4.

The affected areas included Kanda, parts of Cantonments, Kwabenya, Haatso, Legon, and Madina.

Speaking to Citi News on Sunday, May 4,  the General Manager for ECG Sub-Transmission in Accra, Francis Kofi Atsyatsya, explained the sequence of events leading to the outage and the swift restoration efforts undertaken by ECG.
“Around 10:35 am, we had a blast on our protective device, causing outages to customers around Kanda, part of Cantonments, Kanda, Legon, Haatso and Madina. So we called in the fire service to assist us by quenching the fire as we take our time to figure out what exactly caused the blast,” he said.
Atsyatsya noted that the entire station was isolated to enable the fire service personnel to carry out their work safely. Once the fire was brought under control, ECG technicians moved quickly to restore power by transferring the affected load to other supply points in Accra.
“After they were done, we tried to restore the source of light for the affected customers by transferring them to the adjoining bulk supply point that we have in Accra. So as at 1:20, we were able to provide light to all the affected customers. As we speak, everybody who was affected by the outage is back on supply,” he added.

Schandorf writes: Is Bawumia bad for 2028?

0

Today is 4th May 2025 — and from now until the next general election, there remain approximately 1,313 days. Indeed, the interval is strikingly vast, and, under ordinary circumstances, no one ought to be preoccupied with the 2028 polls.

However, as the political sages often say, elections are not an event but a process. This explains why Ghana’s two major political parties are already girding their loins in preparation for the next battle at the ballot box.

In the case of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), two familiar faces have emerged as possible contenders for the party’s flagbearership. The first is the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia; the second, the current Chief of Staff, Mr Julius Debrah.

Between the two, one is believed to be the favourite of the power brokers, while the other commands the admiration of the grassroots — a compelling scenario that promises intrigue, drama, and political suspense.

Though neither has formally declared their intentions, only a fool would disregard the threat of rain while dark clouds gather — and still leave his laundry on the line.

Turning our gaze to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the outlook appears clearer. Unlike the NDC’s murky picture, the NPP’s internal dynamics suggest that Kennedy Agyapong is poised to give Dr Mahamudu Bawumia a fierce contest for the 2028 flagbearership.

And thus we arrive at the central thesis of this piece: is Bawumia truly a flawed candidate who must be discarded?

To answer this, we must first examine the principal determinant of electoral victory in a country like Ghana, where ‘bread-and-butter’ issues dominate political consciousness.

It is my considered view that the single most decisive factor influencing electoral outcomes is the state of the economy — and, more specifically, how the average voter feels in their pocket.

This point is so essential that, regardless of the splendour of any campaign — with its catchy anthems, soaring speeches, and exuberant rallies — once citizens are hungry and the cost of living remains punishing, no amount of political theatre will compel them to endorse those they blame for their suffering.

Indeed, the Akufo-Addo administration came to be seen as the chief architect of the people’s hardship — and, in my view, this perception was the principal reason why the electorate dealt the NPP a stinging blow in 2024.

So much so that even if Barack Obama had led the party, he might still have succumbed to the sword of voter rage.

In plain terms, the Akufo-Addo administration’s legacy was so burdensome it would have crushed the political hopes of any candidate daring enough to bear the NPP’s standard in that election.

To many political analysts, the 2024 elections were less a referendum on Dr Bawumia’s capabilities and more a judgment on President Akufo-Addo’s stewardship.

In truth, Ghana’s constitutional structure renders the Vice-President largely advisory in function. So while Dr Bawumia was indeed the face of the Economic Management Team, his powers to implement policy were limited. In that sense, however complicit he may appear, he was not the principal actor in the drama of economic decline — a point I have long maintained.

For clarity, this is not to absolve Dr Bawumia of all blame. He made several strategic missteps which further complicated his political calculus.

Yet the more salient question is: had Kennedy Agyapong or any other contender led the party into 2024, what new message could they have convincingly offered, given the weight of their own imperfections?

To the voting public, the Akufo-Addo government came to symbolise arrogance, economic incompetence, and a litany of governance failures — all of which even the NPP itself now openly acknowledges. In such an environment, no candidate, no matter how charismatic or beloved, could have restored the party’s fortunes.

Indeed, the 2024 defeat was a blow destined to land. It was a political bullet meant to pierce — and a knife designed to cut — so much so that even the finest of political craftsmen might not have survived the fury of the electorate.

The essence of the matter is this: while Dr Bawumia made his own errors and bore his own scars, the 2024 election was unwinnable for the NPP — and thus, it is neither fair nor logical to single him out as the reason for the party’s electoral collapse or to suggest he must be replaced ahead of 2028.

In fact, if Dr Bawumia is cast aside, it could dangerously reinforce the narrative that the NPP is an Akan-centric party, and undo the strategic gains he has made for the party in the North. The political cost of such a move could be immense and enduring — hence, the idea of his replacement should not be treated as a default.

Therefore, I am persuaded to conclude that the NPP’s electoral prospects in 2028 will depend less on Bawumia’s candidature and more on the failings — or otherwise — of the NDC.

Should the NDC stumble, the NPP will only benefit if it positions itself as a credible opposition — one grounded in truth, offering compelling policy alternatives, and demonstrating internal discipline and cohesion.

Ultimately, replacing a drummer does not guarantee better rhythm — especially if the drum itself is broken. Selah!

A 29-year-old Ghanaian student at Andhra University in India has died under unclear circumstances, raising concerns among university authorities and Ghanaian officials.

The deceased, Ivan Obeng Lartey, was a first-year Business Management student and one of 30 Ghanaian nationals studying at the institution. He lived in Room 401 of the YMCA hostel on Beach Road.

According to a report by graphic.com.gh, Lartey was taken to a private hospital in the early hours of Wednesday, April 30, 2025, by fellow students who said he had been suffering from a high fever and vomiting.

He was later moved to King George Hospital (KGH) at Andhra Pradesh, India, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

University authorities expressed concern that they were not promptly informed about Lartey’s condition.

NM Yugandhar, the university’s Chief Warden, stated that neither he nor hostel management were alerted in time to provide emergency assistance.

“If we had been informed earlier, we could have arranged immediate medical help,” Yugandhar told The Hindu.

The Ghanaian Embassy in New Delhi has been notified, and a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted once an embassy representative arrives.

The exact cause of Lartey’s sudden illness and death remains unknown, with the autopsy expected to provide further clarity.

Meanwhile, both the university and Ghana’s diplomatic mission await official details on the tragic incident.

Authorship: The true currency of the digital age

0

By Samuel AGYEMAN-PREMPEH

In today’s fast-evolving world of content and communication, where nearly anyone can write, print or post their work online, the question professionals must ask themselves is not simply “What have I published?” but rather “What does my authorship say about me?”

In this age of self-publishing platforms and instant digital visibility, the value of credibility and authority in publishing cannot be overstated.

At its core, authorship is more than a byline; it is a brand. It is a statement of ownership, expertise and intentionality. True authorship is not about quantity but quality. It reflects the deliberate pursuit of knowledge, the careful crafting of ideas and the courage to stand by one’s voice in a crowded literary landscape.

The power of authorship lies in the trust it builds. Whether you’re writing academic books, self-help guides, memoirs or fiction, the most lasting impact comes when your readers believe in the integrity of your words. This trust is the cornerstone of credibility, and credibility is what transforms a writer into a respected authority.

But how is this credibility earned?

It is cultivated through consistency, depth and relevance. A credible author does not chase trends—they carve paths. Their work speaks to timeless truths, pressing questions or transformative ideas.

Their voice becomes synonymous with value, expertise and integrity. In publishing, the ability to deliver consistent insight in your chosen domain—whether through books, articles, essays or reports—sets you apart from the transient noise of the content economy.

Consider the literary and commercial success of authors, such as Joanna Penn, who built her authority by offering expert guidance in self-publishing and digital marketing for writers. Her platform is a masterclass in how writing, when approached with professionalism and purpose, becomes a vehicle for long-term influence.

Likewise, the prolific output of Jerry B. Jenkins, whose works have crossed over 200 titles, is a testament to how authorship rooted in values and vision can build empires of impact.

Institutions like Lumière Créatif are critical in helping aspiring and established authors navigate the complexities of publishing. Through mentorship, training, exposure and access to global networks, they nurture voices that deserve to be heard—voices that are shaping the cultural, intellectual and creative future of their communities and beyond.

In the publishing world, being published is no longer enough. The questions that matter are: What do you stand for? What kind of conversations does your work spark?

Whose lives are changed by your words? As authors gain recognition, they also unlock additional opportunities—speaking engagements, residencies, consultancies, collaborations and policy influence.

In this way, publishing is not just about words—it becomes a gateway to leadership and societal contribution. The truth is, authorship is a journey. And on this journey, credibility is the compass and authority is the destination.

Institutions like Lumière Créatif continue to lead the way by helping writers develop their voice, refine their message and publish work that leaves a legacy. They provide a vital bridge between passion and professionalism—between the writer and the world.

So ask yourself: Are you simply publishing—or are you building authority? Are you creating noise or shaping culture? Are you filling pages, or writing a legacy? Because in the end, it is not just about what you write. It is about who you become through your writing—and how the world comes to know you for that.

Accra hit with power cuts as fire erupts at Dzorwulu Bulk Supply Point

Parts of Accra were plunged into darkness on Sunday, May 4, after a fire broke out at the Dzorwulu Bulk Supply Point, one of the city’s major electricity distribution hubs.

Massive clouds of smoke rising from the site caught the attention of residents and onlookers, with many capturing the moment on their phones.

Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service quickly moved in and have since been battling the flames to prevent further damage.

As of now, the cause of the fire is still unknown. Authorities have sealed off the area to ensure public safety while fire crews work to contain the situation.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) confirmed the incident and its ripple effect on the power supply across several communities in a brief update.

“We are doing everything possible to restore electricity once it’s safe and the fire is fully under control,” ECG assured in the statement.

The company also apologised for the unexpected outage and appealed to the public for patience and cooperation during this emergency.

We need to address everything that went wrong in 2024 elections

‘You can burn the sea if you don’t like it’ – Sammy Gyamfi slams NPP

0

The acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has launched a scathing rebuke against the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing it of blatant hypocrisy over its criticism of recent judicial appointments made by President John Dramani Mahama.

According to Mr Gyamfi, the NPP’s duplicity in condemning Justice Senyo Gyamfi’s elevation to the Supreme Court is both “nauseating” and politically dishonest, especially when contrasted with their unwavering support for similar – and even more politically questionable – appointments made by former President Akufo-Addo.

“The problem with the NPP is the duplicity and the hypocrisy they continue to display. That is what I find nauseating in all these discussions,” Mr Gyamfi said.

He drew a sharp comparison between the appointment of Justice Ernest Yao Gaewu — a former NPP parliamentary candidate for Ho Central in 2012 and for Ho West in 2016 — who was made a High Court judge in 2020 and elevated to the Supreme Court by Akufo-Addo in under three years, and Justice Senyo Dzamefe’s lengthy and accomplished judicial career.

“Justice Senyo Dzamefe served as a State Attorney from 1984 to 1987, was a member of the Regional Tribunal from 1989 to 1996, Circuit Court Judge from 1996 to 2000, High Court Judge from 2000 to 2010, and Court of Appeal Judge from 2010 to 2025,” he recounted.

He added, “And yet these same NPP people are saying that President Mahama has committed haram, a sacrilege, for appointing him.”

Speaking on Joy News’ Newsfile on May 3, Mr Gyamfi noted that the NPP had once celebrated President Akufo-Addo for appointing more than 18 justices to the Supreme Court, even as the NDC expressed concern over court-packing.

Now, he argued, the same party seeks to vilify President Mahama for appointing just seven.

“We all know you refused to promote these fine legal minds to the Supreme Court and instead elevated their juniors by as many as 20 years — purely for cheap political gains,” he added.

Mr Gyamfi further framed the decisions not as political manoeuvres but as a principled effort to rectify past discrimination and exclusion within the judicial system.

“What we are doing now is correcting the wrongs of the past. We are delivering justice to victims of injustice,” he noted.

Mr Gyamfi asserted that the President will not be “remote-controlled” by political pressure or external forces.

“You can burn the sea if you don’t like it. President Mahama will not be remote-controlled by you,” he remarked.

Ghanaian music legend and ‘Hiplife Grandpapa,’ Reggie Rockstone, captivated fans with a remarkable performance in a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) exhibition match at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.

At age 61, Rockstone faced off against the younger William Addo in the headline bout of the Global Warrior Champions event on May 3, 2025, delivering a display of skill and technique that led to a second-round victory via rear-naked choke submission.

The bout began with a tense moment as Addo landed a powerful kick, sending Rockstone to the canvas. Demonstrating agility and determination, Rockstone quickly recovered, regaining his footing and composure.

In the second round, videos on social media showed as Rockstone capitalised on an opening, executing a takedown and securing a submission hold that compelled Addo to tap out.

Beyond the physical contest, Rockstone said his participation aimed to spotlight Ghana’s emerging MMA scene and inspire the youth.

Drawing from his background as a two-time junior Taekwondo champion and the youngest Shotokan brown belt in his early years, he emphasised the importance of discipline and perseverance.

“If you’ve known me for over 50 years, you’d know I started martial arts before music. I was the youngest Shotokan brown belt and a two-time junior Taekwondo champion.

“Every day is a risk, but this is a calculated one. My goal is to lend my celebrity to build MMA in Ghana and show that age shouldn’t stop anyone from chasing new goals,” Rockstone stated in a post-fight interview.

The event attracted a diverse audience, including notable figures such as Kimathi Rawlings, and served as a fusion of sports and entertainment.

In his closing remarks, Rockstone advised the youth against substance abuse and advocated for healthy lifestyles.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu is the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu is the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing the remuneration and conditions of service for journalists as part of efforts to strengthen media independence and professionalism in Ghana.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, made the pledge on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama at the celebration of the 2025 World Press Freedom Day and Honours Night held in Accra on Friday by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).

It was on the theme: “Celebrating the Champions of Press Freedom and Ghana’s Media Growth: Building a Resilient Media in the AI Era,” highlighting the vital role of artificial intelligence in shaping the future of journalism.

Kwakye Ofosu underscored that fair labour practices and improved working conditions were essential to building a vibrant and resilient media landscape, adding that financial security for journalists was a cornerstone of true media independence.

He said the government would roll out policy reforms aimed at promoting sustainability, safety, and innovation across the media sector, noting that those reforms would directly address the challenges facing journalists in the course of their duties.

Touching on the safety of journalists, Kwakye Ofosu recalled the period when Ghana’s global press freedom ranking declined due to a spate of attacks and intimidation.

He assured media practitioners that the government was resolute in its efforts to protect journalists and uphold their constitutional rights.

He specifically referenced the unresolved murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale and reiterated the government’s determination to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“We are committed to ensuring that acts of impunity against journalists do not define the future of press freedom in Ghana,” he said.

Ofosu highlighted the government’s investments in building a resilient media ecosystem, including fair and impartial regulatory enforcement, support for ethical journalism, and the enhancement of professional development.

He said the passage of the Right to Information Act and ongoing institutional reforms had opened up new avenues for credible access to information, thereby deepening democratic participation and civic engagement.

The event saw the GJA honouring distinguished journalists and media practitioners for their outstanding contributions to journalism practice in Ghana.

The Awardees included past GJA Presidents Ambassador Kabral Blay-Amihere, Gifty Afenyi-Dadzie, and Ajoa Yeboah-Afari, as well as Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, Ben Ephson, and Elizabeth Ohene.

Kwakye Ofosu called for collaborative efforts among stakeholders, including media owners, security agencies, and political actors, to uphold and safeguard press freedom in Ghana.

“Nothing Mahama Will Do Can Match Us” – Abdul-Hamid Boldly Claims NPP Outperformed NDC

0

Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, a prominent figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former CEO of the National Petroleum Authority, has defended the party’s governance record, stating firmly that he has no regrets over any of its policies as reported by Ghana Web.

Speaking during the NPP’s Thank You Tour following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election, Dr Abdul-Hamid maintained that the NPP gave their best to the country and should not be disheartened by the outcome.

According to him, the loss should be seen in the context of the party’s bold ambition to “Break the 8” — an attempt to secure a third consecutive term, something never achieved under Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

“You were trying to do the impossible,” he told supporters, urging them not to blame themselves for failing to achieve a feat that had eluded every party before them.

Dr Abdul-Hamid dismissed internal blame and public criticism, stating he remains proud of the party’s achievements.

“Walaahi, I am not sorry about anything,” he declared, contrasting his stance with that of other party leaders who have apologized for the loss.

He also criticized the current NDC administration led by President John Mahama, citing disorganized leadership and instability in public institutions.

In his view, nothing Mahama brings to the table can match the NPP’s legacy.

Despite the setback, Dr Abdul-Hamid encouraged members to stay resilient and focused.

Drawing from decades of political experience, he emphasized that setbacks are part of the journey and the NPP must now regroup and prepare for future contests.

Ghanaian who secured 10-year Canada visas for peasant farmer parents’ story goes viral

0

Peter Bawuah (wearing white) and his parents Peter Bawuah (wearing white) and his parents

A Ghanaian man based in Canada has accomplished something that many, especially children who achieve success, may often overlook — honoring and giving back to his parents in a meaningful way.

Peter Bawuah, as he is known, has fulfilled a heartfelt promise he made years ago by welcoming his parents to Canada – a vow he made to them when he was leaving Ghana to pursue opportunities abroad.

He shared that his parents, both peasant farmers, labored tirelessly each day, driven by a selfless desire to provide the best for their children — sacrifices he has now chosen to honor through this meaningful act of reciprocation.

“Today, I welcomed my father and my mother to Canada. A moment I’ve dreamed about since I was a little boy. Share this to inspire others. My parents are simple farmers. My mother goes to the farm three times a day. Those in Techimantia can attest to this. I can boldly say she is one of the mothers who have truly suffered, and the whole town knew it.

“My mum, Ante Badu, didn’t believe in her life to even hold a passport nor to go to the Airport. Today, her tears have become testimony. They didn’t have much, but they gave us everything. I grew up watching them sacrifice their comfort, their dreams, and sometimes even their dignity just to give us a future. I saw them borrow money just to pay our school fees. I saw the pain they tried to hide behind their smiles. And in those quiet moments, I made a promise to myself: ‘One day, I will fly them abroad. I will show them a world they never thought they’d see — because they gave me a life I never deserved,’” he shared on his Facebook on May 3, 2025.

According to Peter, he secured a 10-year visa stay for both of his parents as a gesture of gratitude and appreciation for their unwavering dedication and hard work in raising him and his siblings.

“In less than three years here, I’ve secured 10-year visas for my father and 10 years for my mother. And next year, my brothers and I will take them to Germany, Amsterdam, USA and the UK which I will share very soon,” he stated.

He added; “When I was leaving for Canada, I told them, ‘Just give me two years. God will make a way. Today, that promise I made to myself has been fulfilled. Over the years, I’ve heard people speak so many things about my parents, the insult, the dishonor, and some are painful. But I never let their words break me. I used every voice, every doubt, every whisper, as fuel to push forward. And now, here we are. I’m taking them to one of the most expensive restaurants in Canada — not to show off, but to honour them. Because they deserve to taste the sweetness of their own sacrifices.”

Peter’s heartfelt testimony has since attracted an outpouring of goodwill from Ghanaians, many of whom have commended him for his admirable act of honoring and appreciating his parents in such a profound way.

Seven killed, 20 injured in bombings in South Sudan, MSF says

0

At least seven people have been killed after a hospital and market were bombed in South Sudan, a medical charity has said, as fears grow of a return to civil war.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said helicopter gunships dropped a bomb on the pharmacy of the hospital it runs in Old Fangak, Jonglei state, burning it down, before firing on the town for 30 minutes. A drone then bombed a local market, MSF said.

The hospital is the only one in Fangak county, which has a population of more than 110,000 people, MSF said, and all its medical supplies were destroyed.

The charity called the attack, which left 20 people injured, a “clear violation of international humanitarian law”.

MSF spokesman Mamman Mustapha told the BBC’s Newshour programme the charity was still trying to establish the facts, but local witnesses had said the aircraft were “government forces helicopters”.

“The hospital is clearly marked as ‘hospital’ with our logo,” he said. “We have shared also our coordinates for all the warring parties in the area so the hospital should be known to both parties as a hospital.”

There was no immediate comment from South Sudan’s government. The BBC has contacted the foreign affairs ministry.

In recent weeks, Nicholas Haysom, who leads the UN mission in South Sudan, has warned the country is “teetering on the brink of a return to full-scale civil war”.

Those worries have been stoked by an escalating feud between President Salva Kiir and Vice-President Riek Machar.

Hours before the hospital bombing, the head of the army, Paul Majok Nang, promised punitive strikes after several barges on a river were hijacked.

He blamed those attacks on a militia linked to Vice-President Machar, who has not commented on the claim.

Machar was arrested in March along with several of his associates, and accused of trying to stir up a rebellion.

The government has recently listed counties it considers to be hostile – in other words allied to Machar.

That increased the suspicion that South Sudan could be headed for another conflict involving the country’s two largest ethnic groups.

South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011 but two years later, a civil war erupted when President Kiir dismissed Machar as vice-president, accusing him of plotting a coup.

The ensuing conflict, largely fought along ethnic lines between supporters of the two leaders, resulted in an estimated 400,000 deaths and 2.5 million people being forced from their homes – more than a fifth of the population.

A peace deal was reached in 2018 and a unity government forged with the same two men at the helm, but elections that were supposed to have been called since then have not happened.

The peace deal was also meant to see the end of all the militias and the formation of one united army – but that has not happened and many armed groups are still loyal to different politicians.

The current crisis was sparked earlier this year when the White Army militia, which was allied to Machar during the civil war, clashed with the army in Upper Nile state and overran a military base in Nasir.

Then, in March, a UN helicopter attempting to evacuate troops came under fire, leaving several dead, including a high-ranking army general.

Rights groups have been calling for the military to stop bombing civilian areas.

Dragging CJ impeachment undermines justice

Gertrude Torkornoo has been suspended as the Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has been suspended as the Chief Justice

A senior member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nii Kpakpo Samoa Addo, has raised concerns over the delayed impeachment proceedings against Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, calling on President John Dramani Mahama and relevant stakeholders to expedite the process to avoid setting a dangerous precedent.

Speaking during an interview on The Forum on Asaase Radio, Samoa Addo emphasised that judicial accountability must not be sacrificed on the altar of political gamesmanship or procedural sluggishness.

“There is a very rational policy consideration why, once we get to the threshold of prima facie, you cannot be in office while the impeachment process is ongoing,” he explained. “But if you continue with a suspension for a long time, you have de facto removed the person,” he said.

Samoa Addo warned that the optics surrounding the prolonged process could damage public trust in the impartiality of the system.

“The longer the process drags, the more it begins to look like this is all being done to ensure that the substantive Chief Justice is not kept in office,” he added.

“I want to call on President Mahama and all those involved to expedite the impeachment process. Everyone should rally around this call. We don’t want this process to drag.”

Touching on the recent posture of some legal professionals, Samoa Addo criticized those he said had assumed the role of speaking on behalf of the entire legal community without a proper mandate.

“They decided they can speak for about 8,000 of us. Meanwhile, the executive of the Bar Association had issued a very restrained and well-toned statement that was widely applauded,” he noted.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced the restoration of power to several areas in Accra after a major outage caused by a fire at the Achimota Bulk Supply Point.

According to Mary Eshun, Public Relations Officer for ECG’s Accra East Region, the incident occurred when one of the earthing transformers at the Achimota substation unexpectedly caught fire.

This resulted in widespread power outages across various parts of the city over the month of April.

Images released by ECG showed the charred remains of the affected transformer, highlighting the extent of the damage.

Eshun confirmed that electricity supply has been restored to the affected areas, including Abelemkpe.

“Supply restored to all affected customers,” she told Ghanaweb on May 4, 2025.

She assured the public that ECG is working diligently to ensure the stability of power supply and to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has claimed that Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe is not listed among the founding members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mr Nkansah made this assertion in a Facebook post on Sunday, 4th May.

In the brief but pointed statement, he wrote: “Dr Nyaho Tamakloe’s name is missing in the NPP founding members register. He is fake.”

Remain focused for electoral victory – Ernest Marfo urges NPP

0

Ernest Tanor Marfo, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communication Team in the Asunafo South Constituency of the Ahafo Region, has called on the party’s rank and file to remain calm, tolerant, and focused for the next general elections in 2028.

“In light of recent unfortunate developments within the party, I urge all friends, sympathisers, and well-meaning supporters of Hon. Kennedy Agyapong to stay calm, resolute, and committed to the overarching goal of party unity,” he stated.

According to Mr Marfo, it is particularly regrettable that at a time when Mr Agyapong had launched a noble peace initiative aimed at fostering harmony and cohesion within the party, he was met with disrespect and inflammatory remarks, especially from Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye.

“Such comments from a regional party chairman—whose role demands maturity and exemplary leadership—are not only unfortunate but deeply disappointing,” he lamented.

While affirming Mr Agyapong’s right to defend his integrity and legacy, especially in the face of unwarranted personal attacks, Mr Marfo appealed for restraint: “In the interest of the greater good, we humbly implore him to rise above such provocations and continue in the spirit of unity and purpose.”

He cautioned that such conduct runs counter to the values of fairness and togetherness, which the party must uphold as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.

“The focus of every committed party member must be to build a strong and unified front capable of securing electoral victory,” he said. “Our political strength and credibility—earned through decades of hard work, sacrifice, and loyalty—must not be undermined by internal wrangling and divisive rhetoric.”

Mr Marfo emphasised that both Kennedy Agyapong and His Excellency Dr Mahamudu Bawumia remain central pillars in the current and future prospects of the New Patriotic Party.

“Their leadership, vision, and influence must be accorded the respect and strategic consideration essential for the sustained progress of the party,” he added.

To this end, he urged the National Executive Committee (NEC) to take swift and decisive action to address the ongoing verbal altercations among party stalwarts.

“Chairman Kwame Baffoe must be cautioned—and if necessary, sanctioned—to send a clear message that divisive conduct and public misconduct will not be tolerated in a party founded on discipline, mutual respect, and unity.”

Extending an olive branch, Mr Marfo also conveyed a message of reconciliation to Hon. Kennedy Agyapong: “We extend our sincerest apologies for the disrespectful remarks made against you. We plead for your forgiveness—for the sake of the very party you have laboured so faithfully to build. Let us not allow these distractions to derail our shared mission.”

He concluded with a solemn call to action: “This is the time to close ranks, rise above petty squabbles, and work together to ensure victory for the NPP and prosperity for our nation.”

Mahama won’t be forgiven if he fails to prosecute persons who’ve stolen state money – Nhayo Tamakloe

0

Founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe has said President Mahama will not be pardoned by Ghanaians if he fails to prosecute former appointees of erstwhile President Akufo-Addo who are found guilty of stealing state money.

Dr. Tamakloe in an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues, Sunday, May 4 expressed shock over the charges against former Director General of National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu-Boahene.

Sack officials who defaulted in asset declaration – Governance analyst to Mahama

President Mahama gave a March 31 deadline for asset deadline President Mahama gave a March 31 deadline for asset deadline

Nicholas Gborse, a governance expert in the Volta Region, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss appointees who have failed to declare their assets within the stipulated period.

According to him, the failure of some appointees to comply with the directive is a clear sign of disrespect and disobedience to the President’s authority.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Sunday, May 4, Gborse expressed surprise that some appointees could find it difficult to declare their assets.

He questioned whether this was due to ignorance of their assets or a deliberate refusal to obey the President’s directive, an action he believes signals an attempt to hide something important from the public.

“The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has numerous competent individuals who could hold similar positions,” he said. “Those who do not want to obey the President should be allowed to leave for others to replace them.”

Gborse urged President Mahama to give the non-compliant appointees a grace period of two to three weeks to fulfil the directive. He added that any further refusal should lead to their immediate dismissal and replacement.

He cautioned that the continued disobedience of prominent officials could be weaponised by opposition parties in the upcoming general elections.

He therefore called for swift and decisive action by the party to prevent any potential electoral setbacks.

According to him, the call for accountability underscores the importance of transparency and obedience in government appointments. He stressed that the President must take a firm stand against disobedient appointees to demonstrate his commitment to good governance.

“The President’s directive for appointees to declare their assets was issued in January, with a deadline set for the end of March. All appointees should have adhered to the directive and met the deadline,” he noted.

Gborse emphasised that the party’s reputation could be significantly affected if those who flout directives are not held accountable. He urged the appointees to act swiftly and show their dedication to transparency, accountability, and progressive governance.

He concluded that the way forward is clear: “President Mahama should give the appointees a final ultimatum to comply with the directive. If they fail to do so, they should be dismissed and replaced with competent individuals who will obey the President’s directives.”

Meanwhile, information gathered by the Ghana News Agency reveals that several government appointees, including Nathan Kofi Boakye, Director of Operations at the Presidency; Seth Emmanuel Terkper, Presidential Adviser on the Economy, Naana Yaa Jantuah, Presidential Staffer, and Charles Kipo, Director-General of the National Investigations Bureau, among others, have defaulted on the directive.

‘My intention was not to punish anybody’

Artiste manager and entertainment pundit, Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, popularly known as Bullgod, has shed light on the circumstances surrounding Shatta Wale’s recent public apology stemming from their defamation case.

It could be recalled that in November 2022, Shatta Wale accused Bullgod of involvement in the 2014 murder of Fennec Okyere, former manager of rapper Kwaw Kese.

These allegations prompted Bullgod to file a defamation lawsuit, seeking GH¢1 million in damages.

Fast forward to April 2025, Shatta Wale, in an open letter, publicly apologised for his comments and retracted his claims.

Speaking on the May 3, 2025, edition of United Showbiz, Bulldog stated that the case took an emotional toll on his family, especially his wife and children, as the murder remains unsolved.

“This is something that I have gone through a lot over. Right now, it is a cold case. Nobody has been arrested over it. It’s unresolved. So, for you to come and say that, it’s sad. My family went through a lot, especially my wife and kids. It wasn’t easy. So, I had to take him on to prove that what he said was false,” he said.

Bullgod explained that he had sued Shatta Wale in an effort to clear his name from the allegations but after pleas from various stakeholders, he agreed to an out-of-court settlement in June 2023, which required Shatta Wale to issue a formal apology and cover legal fees amounting to GH¢100,000.

“My intention was not to punish anybody; I just wanted to clear my name. So, when everyone was pleading with me to forgive him and drop the matter, I talked with my wife, and she left the final decision to me.

“So, I agreed to drop the case, and we went to court to remove the case. That was in 2023. I had initially sued him for GH¢1 million, but we agreed for him to render an apology and pay my legal fees. We told the court that, and it was granted provided that all ends were met,” he shared.

However, according to Bullgod, Shatta Wale refused to fufil his end of the bargain until Bullgod’s new lawyers followed up on the case.

“Typical of him, he didn’t fulfil his end of the bargain. We left it at that. It was when my new lawyer went through my cases that he decided to follow up on the judgement.

“So, my lawyers went back to court to enforce the judgement. Then he saw that it wouldn’t go well for him. He got in touch with my lawyers to have a sit-down. I was like, there’s nothing to talk about; he knows what to do. So, the apology came. And that’s okay for me,” he said.

While the apology was eventually made, Bullgod stated that the payment of legal fees remains outstanding.

“All that is left is that he settles my lawyers. The legal fees are about GH¢100,000,” he added.

Bullgod clarified that his primary intention was not to punish Shatta Wale but to clear his name and restore his reputation.

He expressed hope that the matter would be fully resolved soon, allowing both parties to move forward.

President Mahama won’t be remote-controlled

Sammy Gyamfi is the Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board Sammy Gyamfi is the Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board

In a fiery response to criticisms surrounding President John Dramani Mahama’s recent judicial appointments, the acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, has taken direct aim at the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing the party of double standards and political deception.

Appearing on Joy News’ Newsfile, Gyamfi lambasted the NPP for what he called a pattern of “duplicity and hypocrisy” in their public commentary.

“The problem with the NPP is the duplicity and the hypocrisy they continue to display. That is what I find nauseating in all these discussions,” he said.

His comments come in the wake of sharp NPP disapproval of President Mahama’s appointment of Justice Senyo Dzamefe, a well-respected legal figure with a storied career across various levels of Ghana’s judiciary.

Gyamfi laid out the judge’s credentials in detail to highlight what he views as a deliberate mischaracterization of the appointment by political opponents.

“Justice Senyo Dzamefe served as a State Attorney from 1984 to 1987, was a member of the Regional Tribunal from 1989 to 1996, Circuit Court Judge from 1996 to 2000, High Court Judge from 2000 to 2010, and Court of Appeal Judge from 2010 to 2025. And yet these same NPP people are saying that President Mahama has committed haram, a sacrilege, for appointing him.”

Gyamfi argued that the NPP’s outrage was hollow, especially given their own history of neglecting more senior and qualified legal professionals during their time in power.

“We all know you refused to promote these fine legal minds to the Supreme Court and instead elevated their juniors by as many as 20 years — purely for cheap political gains.”

Framing Mahama’s decisions as a bold and necessary redress, Gyamfi declared that the current administration is restoring fairness to a system skewed by partisanship.

“What we are doing now is correcting the wrongs of the past. We are delivering justice to victims of injustice.”

In one of the most pointed lines of his appearance, Gyamfi made it clear that President Mahama would not be swayed by political pressure or partisan outrage.

“You can burn the sea if you don’t like it. President Mahama will not be remote-controlled by you.”

Movement for Change labels NPP a “Reprobate” party after stabbing incident

0

The Movement for Change has launched a blistering critique of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing it of abandoning its founding principles in the wake of a violent incident during the party’s ongoing “Thank You” tour.

The criticism follows reports that a student was stabbed during one of the tour’s events. Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, May 3, Private Legal Practitioner and spokesperson for the Movement for Change, Andrew Appiah-Danquah, condemned the incident and sharply criticised the NPP.

“A simple thank you, and a student has been stabbed. Somebody is struggling for his dear life,” Appiah-Danquah said.

He cited the attack as part of a broader pattern of political violence associated with the ruling party, drawing parallels to a previous incident involving his party.

“For me, it reinforces our position because two years ago, during a simple election, one of our candidates was beaten to the point where he almost went blind. The stabbing reinforces our position that the NPP has departed so fundamentally from their core values to the extent where I will even term them a reprobate party.”

Appiah-Danquah lamented what he views as the NPP’s drift away from democratic values, accusing the party of fostering an environment of violence and intolerance.

“They have departed so fundamentally from the lofty ideals of liberal democracy. Simple thank you people are being stabbed,” he said.

The Movement for Change has called for greater accountability within the NPP and urged political parties to uphold the principles of democracy, law, and order.

Executive leadership programme concludes with shared vision for Ghana’s future

0

The Government of Ghana, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), convened an Executive Leadership Programme (ELP) in Ada, Ghana from 23rd to 26th April 2025.

The Programme was held against the backdrop of the recent democratic transition in the country and following the constitution of a new Cabinet. Under the theme: “Re-imagining Leadership in a ‘Reset’ Ghana, the programme marked a bold step toward renewing public leadership, advancing responsive governance, and driving transformational change across Ghana.

The Executive Leadership Programme brought together senior government officials, including Ministers, deputy ministers, senior advisors, special guests, international and national resource persons, as well as the private sector and representatives of the African Development Bank.

Designed as an intensive, forward-looking series of interactive sessions, the programme provided an opportunity to strengthen strategic leadership, foster inter-ministerial collaboration, and equip the leaders to navigate the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA) shaping today’s governance landscape.

Ghana stands at a crossroads, faced with diverse challenges. We must lead differently, think differently and act differently, as the true measure of our success is the lives we touch and the legacy we leave behind,” said H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana.

Where we feel our development partners, especially UNDP, can come in, is bringing together various stakeholders, including the private sector and governments from across the aisle to agree on one development agenda that we all buy into and agree to move forward no matter who is in power,” he added.

The Executive Leadership Programme also offered Ministers a safe, co-curated environment to engage with real-world scenarios, regional and global trends, and leadership principles rooted in empathy, systems thinking, and collaborative governance.

Delivered through four thematic modules—Leading in a New World of Accelerated Change, Leading Systems in a VUCA World, Leading Self and Others, and Leading to Deliver Results—the programme challenged leaders to reimagine not just what they govern, but how they govern.

Facilitated by renowned African and global leaders, former heads of state, policy experts, and thought leaders in public administration, each session integrated dialogue, case studies, and strategic foresight. Participants were encouraged to align their leadership approaches with Ghana’s emerging national priorities and the aspirations of its people.

For Ghana and Africa to truly advance, we need focused, consistent leadership and a reimagined approach to our educational systems. We must not only invest in technology but also in the people who will create it. Education is the foundation for meaningful change,” said H.E. Goodluck Jonathan, Former President of Nigeria, during his opening remarks.

Specially tailored sessions, including a high-profile meeting between women in political leadership in Ghana and the UNDP’s Regional Director for Africa, Ahunna Eziakonwa offered stakeholders the opportunity to celebrate Ghana for its recent strides in empowering more women at the political front whilst highlighting the lessons and efforts to maintain and improve the status quo ante. The bilateral sessions fostered stronger bonds between development partners, the Government of Ghana, multinationals and the private sector, with emphasis on grey areas for future collaborations.

Ghana continues to navigate significant socio-economic challenges, from youth unemployment and growing inequalities to climate vulnerability and external shocks. Yet, it also benefits from democratic continuity and institutional resilience, reaffirming Ghana’s position as a model of democratic governance in a region where political transitions are increasingly challenged by instability and social unrest.

“Our collective aspiration is that this collaborative programme will serve as a catalyst: equipping you with fresh perspectives, renewed energy, and actionable strategies to steer Ghana toward inclusive and sustainable development. UNDP remains a committed partner in this journey,” said Ahunna Eziakonwa, UN Assistant Secretary-General, UNDP Assistant Administrator, and Regional Director for Africa.

“Let us seize this opportunity to reimagine leadership, not just for today, but for the Ghana we are building together,” she added.

UNDP and the Government of Ghana will continue to work together to ensure that the programme’s outcomes inform strategic governance priorities and build momentum for long-term institutional transformation.

The Programme is part of the newly established Regional Leadership Programme for Africa and presents a first-of-its-kind convening for Ghana’s new Government. It sets the stage for deeper transformation across institutions, ministries, and governance structures and signals a shift toward values-driven, future-focused, and results-oriented governance.

As Ghana enters a new era of leadership, the Executive Leadership Programme has strengthened a shared commitment to bold, accountable, and future-ready governance. UNDP and the Government of Ghana will continue working together to sustain this momentum, driving leadership that delivers opportunity and inclusive development for all.

Mahama won’t be controlled by NPP on Judicial nominations

0

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, has launched a blistering attack on the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing the party of hypocrisy and double standards over its criticism of President John Dramani Mahama’s Supreme Court nominations.

In a passionate defence of President Mahama’s nomination of Justice Senyo Dzamefe to the Supreme Court, he claimed that the NPP’s reaction lacked merit and exposed what he described as politically motivated inconsistency in handling judicial matters.

“The problem with the NPP is the duplicity and the hypocrisy they continue to display. That is what I find nauseating in all these discussions,” he said.

Speaking on Joy News on Saturday, May 3, he pointed to the longstanding public service and legal track record of Justice Dzamefe as justification for the appointment.

He stressed that, unlike others who were fast-tracked under the previous administration, Justice Dzamefe had served the judiciary with distinction across multiple decades.

“Justice Senyo Dzamefe served as a State Attorney from 1984 to 1987, was a member of the Regional Tribunal from 1989 to 1996, Circuit Court Judge from 1996 to 2000, High Court Judge from 2000 to 2010, and Court of Appeal Judge from 2010 to 2025,” he outlined.

Despite this extensive experience, the acting CEO expressed concern that the same individuals who once endorsed partisan judicial promotions were now rejecting President Mahama’s well-founded appointment.

“And yet these same NPP people are saying that President Mahama has committed haram, a sacrilege, for appointing him.

“We all know you refused to promote these fine legal minds to the Supreme Court and instead elevated their juniors by as many as 20 years purely for cheap political gains,” he asserted.

Describing the current appointments as a move toward fairness, Sammy Gyamfi defended President Mahama’s actions as necessary for restoring credibility within the judicial system.

“What we are doing now is correcting the wrongs of the past. We are delivering justice to victims of injustice.

“You can burn the sea if you don’t like it. President Mahama will not be remote-controlled by you,” he stated.

Ghana to host first shipping & logistics summit

0

Akwaabaa Communication, in collaboration with key industry stakeholders, is set to host its maiden edition of the Ghana-International Shipping and Logistics Summit in July 2025 at the Accra International Conference Centre.

Under the theme “Accelerating Action: Transforming Ghana’s Shipping & Logistics Sector for Global Competitiveness”, the summit is poised to chart a new course for the nation’s shipping and logistics sector by addressing critical challenges and unlocking new opportunities for growth and sustainability.

The summit comes at a crucial time when Ghana’s shipping, transport, and air cargo logistics industries are grappling with deep-rooted inefficiencies, regulatory hurdles, and cost challenges that have hindered their competitiveness on the global stage.

Despite the sector’s pivotal role in driving trade, job creation, and economic development, persistent issues such as fragmented regulations, uncompetitive operational charges, and the enactment of unfavourable laws without proper stakeholder engagement continue to impede progress.

Recent industry assessments estimate that delays at Ghana’s ports cost businesses approximately $200 million annually in demurrage and storage fees, stifling economic growth and weakening Ghana’s positioning as a regional trade hub.

Cargo clearance at the ports often faces delays of 7 to 14 days, a stark contrast to the global benchmark of 1 to 3 days.

Moreover, the country’s ports are among the most expensive in West Africa, with logistics inefficiencies and burdensome government taxes inflating operational costs by as much as 35 percent.

These heightened costs are ultimately passed down to consumers, increasing the cost of living and undermining Ghana’s attractiveness to global trade partners.

Another pressing concern is the unavailability of accessible credit and financing solutions for logistics operators and service providers, stifling innovation and limiting opportunities for business expansion.

Compounding these issues is the state of logistics infrastructure, which falls short of meeting the evolving demands of a modern, integrated supply chain.

The summit will gather over 1,000 CEOs, more than 100 government officials, and a vibrant mix of industry players, captains of industry, and international trade partners.

It promises two days of intensive dialogue, strategic exhibitions, and high-level networking, all aimed at advancing tangible reforms. Keynote speeches by industry leaders, in-depth panel discussions, and interactive exhibitions will provide a platform for sharing insights, fostering collaborations, and outlining pragmatic steps toward a more efficient and competitive sector.

The event targets a broad audience, encompassing service providers, port authorities, shipping and transport logistics operators, international trade partners, policymakers, investors, financial institutions, industry analysts, and academia.

This diverse representation will ensure robust discussions and a holistic approach to tackling the multifaceted challenges facing the industry.

The Ghana-International Shipping and Logistics Summit 2025 seeks to create a collaborative framework where government, industry leaders, investors, and stakeholders can work hand-in-hand to transform the shipping and logistics sector into a world-class, competitive, and efficient engine of growth.

The summit is proudly supported by media partners and technology solution providers specialising in digital trade facilitation, ensuring that the outcomes of the event are widely disseminated and that the focus on digital transformation remains central to the agenda.
