‘Political parties not for sale’ – Prof. Oquaye warns NPP

0

Former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, has sharply condemned the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to charge GH¢4 million from prospective flagbearer aspirants, calling it “a suicidal pathway” that undermines the foundation of democracy.

The party stalwart argued that the policy turns internal elections into an auction, warning that “a political party is not for sale.”

“The GH¢4 million so-called development fee is a bubonic plague. Moneycracy is not democracy, and a political party must not be seen to be pursuing that pathway,” Prof. Oquaye cautioned in an interview with Daily Graphic.

Under the current arrangement, NPP presidential aspirants are to pay GH¢100,000 for nomination forms, GH¢500,000 for filing, and an additional GH¢4 million as a development levy intended to support party structures.

Critics, including several party insiders, argue that the high fee is designed to sideline less resourced aspirants and tilt the race in favour of those with significant financial muscle.

Prof. Oquaye, who chaired the 12-member committee that probed the NPP’s 2024 electoral defeat, warned that the policy could erode public trust and dent Ghana’s democratic image.

“This is now a national concern. Under the 1992 Constitution, political parties must conduct their internal affairs in line with democratic principles,” he emphasised.

He urged the party’s leadership to urgently review the fee structure, describing it as “unreasonable, undemocratic, and contrary to the party’s founding values.”

US complies with Ghana’s refusal to accept Abrego Garcia

0

The Government of Ghana has confirmed that the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has formally complied with Ghana’s refusal to accept Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national at the centre of a deportation controversy.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced on his X page on October 10 that Ghana’s position had been “duly acknowledged and complied with” by U.S. authorities.

“We also note with satisfaction that DHS has today taken the appropriate steps to inform Garcia’s lawyers and amend court submissions to reflect the fact that Ghana cannot be an option for Garcia’s deportation,” Ablakwa stated.

He reaffirmed that Ghana had never agreed to receive Garcia, stressing that the government had consistently maintained its stance throughout discussions with the U.S.

“The Mahama Administration will continue to be transparent and truthful to Ghanaians at all times,” Ablakwa assured, adding that the government’s humanitarian policy of accepting limited numbers of non-criminal West Africans “does not—and will not—apply to persons from other regions or those facing criminal allegations.”

The development follows reports that DHS had initially considered Ghana as a possible deportation destination for Garcia after failed attempts to return him to El Salvador, where a court order had barred his removal due to credible fears of persecution.

Garcia, who had been living in Maryland with his family, was previously deported to El Salvador in March 2025 under the Trump administration over alleged links to the MS-13 gang—claims his lawyers have repeatedly denied.

He was later returned to the U.S. to face human smuggling charges in Tennessee, where he pleaded not guilty.

Ablakwa said Ghana’s firm response demonstrates its commitment to human rights, the rule of law, and international cooperation conducted “with dignity and transparency.”

Tema police arrest human trafficking, cyber fraud syndicate

0

The Tema Regional Police Command has busted a human trafficking and cyber fraud syndicate operating at Peace Land, in the Ashaiman municipality.

Three suspected members of the syndicate were arrested, while seven Nigerian nationals who were being held captive have also been rescued by the command.

In a statement issued by the command and signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Dede Dzakpasu, the Head of Public Affairs, Tema Police, it was stated that the operation was carried out by the Zenu-Atadeka District Police Patrol Team on October 07, 2025, at approximately 16:00 hours.

It said the suspects, identified as Peter Okoyie, 36 years old, a computer engineer; Jolly Ezekiel, 30 years old; and Jolly Shadrack, 33 years old, were alleged to have lured their victims from Nigeria into Ghana under the pretense of offering them construction work at Tema.

The police said, upon arrival, the victims were taken to a house at Peace Land, Ashaiman, where they were confined and forced into internet fraud activities.

Investigations revealed that the victims were subjected to severe beatings and compelled to swear oaths of allegiance to their captors.

The statement indicated that those who refused to participate in the fraudulent schemes were locked in a small room measuring approximately 10 by 12 feet, deprived of food, freedom of movement, and basic hygiene for several months.

The victims said each one of them was provided with a laptop and trained to create fake romantic relationships with unsuspecting people in some foreign countries to defraud them of money.

The syndicate reportedly used over ten laptops for these operations, with senior members supervising and benefiting from the proceeds.

The command noted that during a follow-up search at the suspects’ residence, the police retrieved items including laptops, routers, mobile phones, household goods, and foodstuffs, which had been retained as exhibits to aid investigations, while the victims, who had been confined for about eight months, have since been rescued.

On October 09, 2025, the suspects were arraigned before the Ashaiman District Court, presided over by H/W Derick Parden Eshun, charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit crime, namely human trafficking and human trafficking.

Their pleas were not taken, and they were remanded into police custody to reappear on October 23, 2025.

It added that the mobile phones retrieved from the accused had been forwarded to the Cyber Crime Unit at the Police Headquarters, Accra, for forensic analysis.

The Tema Regional Police Commander assured the public that investigations were progressing steadily, and the command was also collaborating with the Ghana Immigration Service, to facilitate the safe repatriation and reintegration of the victims with their families in Nigeria.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment towards safeguarding public safety and security and urged them to promptly report any suspected human trafficking or cybercrime activities, to assist in the ongoing fight against organised criminal networks.

The Ghana Police Service on Friday, October 10, 2025, announced the three suspects of a notorious human trafficking and cyber fraud syndicate operating at Peace Land in Ashaiman, a community in the Greater Accra Region.

The police, in a statement issued on Friday, also disclosed that they rescued up to seven Nigerian nationals who were trafficked to Ghana by the syndicate.

The victims were lured into Ghana with promises of construction work, but after they arrived, they were forced into romance fraud.

“The suspects, identified as Peter Okoye (36), a computer engineer, Jolly Ezekiel (30), and Jolly Shadrack (33), are alleged to have lured their victims from Nigeria into Ghana under the pretence of offering them construction work in Tema. Upon arrival, the victims were taken to a house at Peace Land, Ashaiman, where they were confined and forced into internet fraud activities,” the police said.

The victims told the police that each of them was “provided with a laptop and trained to create fake romantic relationships with unsuspecting persons in some foreign countries, to defraud them of money” after they arrived in Ghana.

The police also stated that the trafficked Nigerians who refused to engage in the scam were treated inhumanely by the members of the syndicate.

Some of the victims who refused were denied food and locked in small rooms for days, the statement indicated.

“Investigations revealed that the victims were subjected to severe beatings and compelled to swear oaths of allegiance to their captors. Those who refused to participate in the fraudulent schemes were locked in a small room measuring approximately 10×12 feet, deprived of food, freedom of movement, and basic hygiene for several months.”

The police also stated that their investigations show that the victims were trafficked to Ghana around March 2025.

President Mahama Must Protect My Life, I Am in Danger” — Abronye Unleashed

0

Former Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, has made a passionate appeal to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to protect his life, which he claims is currently in danger.

In a video posted by Ohia TV on Saturday, October 11, 2025, Abronye cited provisions from the 1992 Constitution, emphasizing that it is the constitutional duty of the President to safeguard both the state and the lives of individuals, regardless of their political stance or party affiliation.

According to him, the Constitution clearly mandates that “the President shall protect the rights and freedoms of every citizen.” Abronye stressed that as a Ghanaian citizen, he is entitled to the same protection guaranteed under the law.

“I am reminding President Mahama that as the Commander-in-Chief, it is his constitutional responsibility to ensure my safety. I am in danger, and he must act now,” Abronye declared during the live interview.

He alleged that he has received several threats to his life as a result of his outspoken political views and frequent criticisms of certain decisions taken by the current administration. Despite these threats, he vowed not to be intimidated or silenced.

Abronye further noted that Ghana’s democracy must allow citizens to express their opinions freely without fear of persecution or harm. He urged the Ghana Police Service and National Security to act promptly on his plea, warning that failure to do so would be a violation of their constitutional mandate.

“The Constitution doesn’t say protection is only for those who support the government. It says the President must ensure the safety of every Ghanaian, including me,” he stated.

The former Bono Regional Chairman has long been known for his fiery political commentary and controversial remarks that often stir public debate. His latest statement has once again sparked reactions across the political spectrum — with some Ghanaians expressing concern for his safety, while others accuse him of dramatizing the situation for political attention.

As of press time, neither the Presidency nor the Ministry of National Security has issued an official response to Abronye’s claims.

Security analysts, however, have urged the government to take his concerns seriously, noting that in a democracy, all citizens — regardless of political background — deserve protection under the law.

Abronye concluded his remarks by reaffirming his loyalty to Ghana’s democracy, insisting he will continue to “speak the truth without fear,” even in the face of threats and intimidation.

MIT Rejects Trump Federal Funding Deal Tied to Campus Policies

0

January Official Presidential Portrait Of Donald J Trump

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has become the first major university to publicly reject a Trump administration proposal linking federal funding access to conservative campus policies, citing concerns about academic freedom and institutional independence.

In a letter sent Friday to U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon, MIT President Sally Kornbluth declined the administration’s “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education,” which promised preferential access to federal grants in exchange for adopting a series of policy demands. The compact was circulated to nine elite institutions, including Brown University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Southern California, and the University of Texas.

“The compact includes principles with which we disagree, including those that would restrict freedom of expression and our independence as an institution,” Kornbluth wrote. “Scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone.”

The proposal would require participating schools to cap foreign student admissions, restrict university leaders from commenting on political matters, and adopt a binary definition of gender. It also called on universities to use standardized tests for most admissions, allow lawful force if necessary to prevent campus protests, and ensure conservative viewpoints could be expressed freely on campus.

Schools that violated any part of the agreement would reportedly be forced to return both federal funds and certain private donations. The administration framed the compact as a way to combat what it views as left wing bias and restrictive speech codes on college campuses.

MIT, which already uses standardized tests in admissions and maintains an international enrollment of around 10 percent, argued that its existing policies reflect the university’s own values rather than political pressure. “We freely choose these values because they’re right,” Kornbluth wrote in her response.

The rejection comes amid escalating tensions between the Trump administration and elite universities over campus policies and research funding. Earlier this year, MIT joined a lawsuit challenging federal cuts to health research grants.

California Governor Gavin Newsom warned last week that any university in his state accepting the deal would immediately lose billions in state funding, including Cal Grants. “California will not bankroll schools that sell out their students, professors, researchers, and surrender academic freedom,” he said in a statement designed to mirror the president’s communication style.

Top Democrats in Congress have also called the compact a trap, warning universities that signing would amount to ceding independence to federal political control.

It remains unclear whether any of the nine invited institutions will accept the administration’s terms. Several universities, including Harvard, have faced repeated funding threats from the White House over the past year related to campus protest responses and diversity policies.

The compact represents the administration’s latest effort to reshape American higher education according to its policy priorities, but MIT’s rejection signals that at least some institutions are willing to risk federal funding to maintain autonomy. With billions in research grants and student aid at stake, other universities now face a difficult choice between financial security and institutional independence.

Adom-Otchere and Kwakye Ofosu face off on live TV

Felix Kwakye Ofosu (L) and Paul Adom-Otchere (R) on the Good Morning Ghana programme on Friday Felix Kwakye Ofosu (L) and Paul Adom-Otchere (R) on the Good Morning Ghana programme on Friday

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, clashed with renowned broadcaster Paul Adom-Otchere on live TV over the case of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme on Friday, October 10, 2025, Kwakye Ofosu claimed that the erstwhile Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government deliberately ignored a report by the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Wontumi’s illegal mining activities, for which he is being prosecuted today.

He alleged that the then-Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Dame, knew about the report but decided to do nothing.

106 Years or 25 Years: The maximum jail term Wontumi could get if he is found guilty

“President Akufo-Addo was not willing to punish anybody for anything that he did under his government. So you pass an LI, abuse it, award mining leases to party boys. They engage in illegal mining. The CID investigates, and then you come on national television and say that the person who has been fingered in that CID report is innocent, and do nothing,” he said.

Adom-Otchere did not even allow Kwakye Ofosu to land and began questioning him about the CID report he was referencing, asserting that there was no CID report on Wontumi during the Akufo-Addo era.

But the minister of state insisted that there was a report, which Dame knew about but elected not to act on, adding that the current Attorney General, Dr Dominic Ayine, has used that same report to file charges against the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman.

But Paul also insisted that there was no report, challenging Kwakye Ofosu to make the report public.

According to him, he had spoken to Dame, who told him he “did not know about the report.”

The minister then retorted, saying that if the former AG did not know about the report, then it means he was incompetent. He, however, maintained that Dame knew about the report.

The broadcaster returned to say that several security agencies, including the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), could have investigated the allegation against Wontumi during the Akufo-Addo era.

“How do you know CID was working on it? It could have been EOCO, it could have been CID. He is not providing evidence for that; he is not able to,” said Adom-Otchere fumed.

Well, it turns out not all these people are what they portray themselves to be.

“Bossu, are you saying you are deaf and dumb… If you need money, just ask, because what you are doing is not a good thing.

“You have taken upon yourself a sickness which God did not. It is not a good thing,” the man said in the Ga dialect.

Gov’t releases GHS 9.5m to support 2025 NSMQ

0

The government has disbursed a total of GHS 9.5 million to ensure the continuation of the National Mathematics and Science Quiz (NSMQ), one of the country’s most celebrated educational competitions.

The move comes after the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) announced earlier this month that it would be unable to participate in the 2025 competition due to financial constraints.

The NSMQ, now in its 32nd year, has become a cornerstone for promoting excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) among Ghanaian youth. Since its inception in 1993, over 700 public and private senior high schools have participated, with the competition drawing nationwide attention each year.

The programme, organized by Primetime Limited, has been credited with inspiring a new generation of scientists, doctors, engineers, and problem-solvers across the country.

Addressing the 63rd Annual Conference of CHASS in Sunyani, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu moved to allay concerns and reiterated the government’s commitment to science and mathematics education.

“The future of our education is about science and mathematics education,” Mr. Iddrisu stressed, highlighting the crucial role of STEM in achieving Ghana’s long-term development goals.

According to the Ministry of Education, just 24% of senior high school students currently specialise in science, underscoring the importance of encouraging broader participation.

The minister further disclosed that the government had released GHS 9.5 million to Primetime Limited, the organisers of the NSMQ, to clear outstanding arrears for the 2023 and 2024 competitions and to fully cover the 2025 programme.

“I personally edited and supervised the letter which was to go to the GETFUND for the release of the money, and I am certain that the money has so been released,” Mr. Iddrisu stated.

He called on CHASS to reconsider its decision, insisting that with the funding secured, all secondary schools should participate fully.

“Therefore, I expect CHASS to fully participate in the NSMQ.

Accordingly, we have done our part and as the government, we will continue to do our part,” he stated.

Free SHS and Broader Educational Commitment

In his welcoming remarks, Reverend Father Stephen Owusu Sekyere, President of CHASS, commended the government for its ongoing support of secondary education, specifically referencing the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, which has seen enrolment jump from 800,000 in 2016 to over 1.3 million in 2024, according to Ghana Education Service figures.

“The Conference recognises with appreciation the commitment of the government to sustaining the nation’s Senior High School Education, particularly through the Free SHS policy,” Rev. Fr. Sekyere said.

NSMQ’s Impact and Future

The NSMQ has, over the years, produced notable alumni who have excelled in academia, medicine, and technology both in Ghana and abroad. The competition is credited with boosting the profile of science education, with past champions such as Prempeh College, Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC), and Wesley Girls’ High School dominating the contest.

With government funding now secured for the next edition, the NSMQ is expected to continue its mission of nurturing scientific talent and fostering academic competition among Ghana’s youth.

On Wednesday, October 8, 2025, the late Daddy Lumba’s family announced that the music icon, who died at the age of 60 in July, would be buried on Saturday, December 6, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

The family’s spokesperson and former Manhyia North MP, Collins Amankwah, also detailed the activities planned for the solemn event in Kumasi.

Following the announcement, news emerged that the late singer’s wife had filed a court injunction against Daddy Lumba’s family head, Victor Kofi Owusu Boahene, Transitions Funeral Home, and co-wife Odo Broni.

Details of the injunction from the court documents surfaced on social media on Thursday, October 9, 2025.

In a press statement released on social media, Akosua Serwaa claimed she was not consulted in planning her late husband’s funeral.

She said she had been repeatedly disrespected since her husband’s passing and described finding out her husband’s burial date on social media as distressing.

Captain Smart warns Akosua Serwaa over injunction

On Friday, October 10, 2025, Captain Smart held an interview session with comic actors Jeffery Nortey, Aka Ebenezer and Opoku Bilson on his Onua Maakye show.

During the interview, the media personality emphatically stated that Daddy Lumba’s funeral service would go on as planned on December 6, 2025, without interference from any individual.

He said:

“Daddy Lumba’s funeral will be held on December 6. No one can stop the funeral from happening.”

Captain Smart dared the bailiff or any officer from the court to make any attempt to present their injunction documents or halt the funeral at the grounds.

The Onua TV presenter noted that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s appearance at Daddy Lumba’s funeral service would deter any interference.

He said:

“If you are a bailiff and you see Otumfuo sitting under his palanquin at the funeral, bring the court injunction. Bring it there. We will be waiting for you.”

The video of Captain Smart warning Akosua Serwaa and the court over the injunction is below:

Mr Kofi Owusu noted that he and his family had not gone to court to ascertain the existence of a court injunction against them.

He boldly stated that there was no injunction prohibiting his family from proceeding with the funeral for their late relative.

He later appeared to contradict himself by confirming the reports as he explained some of the arguments raised in Akosua Serwaa’s court injunction.

He noted that the late musician’s first wife disagreed with the family’s decision to also include the second wife, Odo Broni, in the performance of the widowhood rites during the funeral service.

Mr Kofi Owusu noted that, despite Akosua Serwaa’s objection, traditional customs demanded that she and her co-wife participate in the widowhood rites.

Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that Akosua Serwaa’s lawyer spoke about his client’s court injunction in an interview with Peace FM.

Mr William Kusi of Dominion Chambers claimed that Daddy Lumba’s first wife had been notified by the family head that she was no longer recognised as the late singer’s wife.

He also shared additional details concerning the injunction and the date for court proceedings.

Kwadwo Baah Agyemang not convinced Otto Addo can lead at World Cup despite impressive qualifiers – Ghana Latest Football News, Live Scores, Results

0

Former National Sports Authority Board Chairman Kwadwo Baah Agyemang has expressed admiration for Ghana’s World Cup qualification campaign while voicing strong doubts about Otto Addo’s capacity to lead the team at the tournament proper.

Agyemang made the comments following Ghana’s commanding 5-0 victory over Central African Republic that left the Black Stars needing just one point from their final qualifier to secure their World Cup place.

“Otto Addo has shamed me. He has changed a lot since the Mali game,” Agyemang acknowledged, recognizing the coach’s development during the qualifying campaign.

“We will surely be at the World Cup, but Otto Addo can’t lead us to face teams like Spain, Italy, Portugal, Brazil and Argentina.”

While praising Addo as a “qualification expert” who has guided Ghana to the brink of their second consecutive World Cup under his leadership, the former NSA boss maintained that the coach lacks the necessary composure for the global stage, citing concerns about his bench demeanor and tactical approach against elite opponents.

Addo’s impressive qualifying record – remaining unbeaten with six wins from seven games – continues to be overshadowed by skepticism from figures like Agyemang and Sports Minister Kofi Adams, who recently described the coach as “lucky” despite the team’s consistent results.

I have no problem with Bullet – OgeeTheMC on misunderstanding with RuffTown CEO

OgeeTheMC (R) says he has no grudge against Bullet (L) OgeeTheMC (R) says he has no grudge against Bullet (L)

Ghanaian hype man OgeeTheMC has cleared the air about his relationship with Bullet, CEO of RuffTown Records, saying he holds no grudge against him.

In an interview with ZionFelix, Ogee addressed claims of tension between himself and Bullet, which arose months ago after the music executive labelled him a liar over comments about the late singer Ebony Reigns.

According to Ogee, his words were taken out of context. “Bullet might have misunderstood me,” he explained, adding that he never said anything negative about the RuffTown boss.

He emphasised that he has no personal issues with Bullet and still respects him deeply.

While acknowledging that they haven’t spoken in some time, Ogee attributed the lack of communication to their busy schedules rather than any fallout.

“It’s been a while since we talked, but we’re both just occupied with our work,” he said.

The popular MC also recounted how he first met Ebony and later introduced her to Bullet, which eventually led to her signing with RuffTown Records.

OgeeTheMC said he remains proud to have played a role in connecting the late songstress with the team that helped shape her career.

Around four million people displaced across Africa’s Sahel, UN warns

0

The UN has noted that around four million people are now displaced across Africa’s Sahel region The UN has noted that around four million people are now displaced across Africa’s Sahel region

Around four million people are now displaced across Africa’s Sahel region, the United Nations has said, with violence and insecurity driving a growing number of people from their homes.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) called for greater international support on Friday, saying the affected countries could not deal with the situation alone.

“About four million people are now displaced across Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and neighbouring countries – around two-thirds more than five years ago – reflecting insecurity, limited access to services and livelihoods, and the effects of climate change,” said Abdouraouf Gnon-Konde, UNHCR’s regional director for West and Central Africa.

While 75 percent of those displaced remain within their own countries, cross-border movements are on the rise, putting pressure on host communities with “scant assistance” available, he told reporters in Geneva.

Women and children represent 80 percent of forcibly displaced people in the Sahel, Gnon-Konde said, adding the number of people impacted by pervasive gender-based violence had “significantly increased” this year.

“The insecurity across the region is exposing people to violence, forced recruitment, movement restrictions, and arbitrary detention,” he said.

Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have been hit by violence from armed groups linked to al-Qaeda or the ISIL (ISIS) group for more than a decade.

Those three countries – all run by military governments – quit the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at the beginning of the year, accusing the regional bloc of failing in the fight against armed groups.

They have formed their own Alliance of Sahel States (AES), turning away from former colonial power France and pivoting towards Russia.

Human Rights Watch and other rights groups have accused the fighters, the military, and partner forces of Burkina Faso and Mali of possible atrocities.

Meanwhile, Gnon-Konde said food insecurity was increasingly pushing people to flee, while climate shocks were intensifying competition for scarce resources such as water, fuelling friction between communities.

Nearly 15,000 schools had closed in the region by mid-2025, as well as more than 900 health facilities.

UNHCR needs $409.7m to cover humanitarian needs in the Sahel, but has only received 32 percent of the total, Gnon-Konde said.

The lack of funds has “drastically impacted” activities such as refugee registration and documentation, and the provision of education, health, and shelter, he added.

More than 212,000 refugees and asylum seekers in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger are not yet registered, limiting their access to services and heightening their risks of arbitrary detention, he said.

“UNHCR is calling for a renewed and strengthened international commitment to address the crisis,” Gnon-Konde said. “Countries in the region cannot face these challenges alone.”

Mahama Orders The Arrest of These Persons

0

President John Dramani Mahama has issued a firm call for urgent judicial action against individuals implicated in the misuse of public resources, following revelations in the latest Auditor-General’s report.

The report, which details financial irregularities across various government institutions, has sparked national concern over the management of public funds. In response, President Mahama emphasized the need for prompt legal proceedings to ensure accountability and to restore public confidence in state institutions.

“The people’s money must be protected at all costs,” the President stated. “Anyone found guilty of diverting public funds must face the law without delay. We cannot allow corruption to go unpunished.”

The President expressed deep concern over the scale of misappropriation uncovered in the audit, warning that continued financial mismanagement threatens national development and undermines trust in public leadership. He urged the judiciary and law enforcement agencies to expedite investigations and prosecutions relating to the findings.

President Mahama’s directive forms part of his administration’s broader anti-corruption agenda, which includes strengthening public financial management systems and enhancing institutional oversight. He stressed that delays in prosecuting corruption cases only embolden wrongdoers and weaken the rule of law.

“This government has zero tolerance for corruption. Accountability is non-negotiable,” Mahama said, calling on state institutions to act decisively in safeguarding the nation’s finances.

Civil society organizations and governance experts have largely welcomed the President’s remarks, describing them as a positive step toward enforcing transparency and deterring public sector corruption. Many have also emphasized the importance of not only exposing misconduct through audits but also ensuring that legal consequences follow.

The Auditor-General’s report, a key instrument for tracking government expenditure, has become a focal point in the country’s fight against graft. President Mahama’s response signals a renewed commitment to ensuring that the audit process translates into concrete legal action.

As the nation awaits further developments, the President’s strong stance sets the tone for a more robust accountability framework aimed at protecting Ghana’s resources and promoting responsible governance.

Paul Yandoh Faces Off Against Wontumi’s Lawyer Amid Ghana Cedi’s Top Ranking in Africa

0

Ghanaian lawyer Paul Yandoh is reportedly embroiled in a legal dispute with the legal team representing Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, while the country simultaneously celebrates a major economic milestone. The conflict, according to sources, revolves around recent allegations involving financial mismanagement claims connected to Wontumi’s ongoing court cases.

Sources close to the matter indicate that Yandoh has filed complaints against Wontumi’s legal representatives over statements made during recent hearings, which he alleges misrepresented facts and potentially defamed him in the public eye. The case, which is currently under review at an Accra High Court, is expected to spark heated arguments as both sides prepare to present evidence and legal arguments in the coming weeks.

In a parallel development, Ken Agyap, a renowned economist and financial analyst, revealed that the World Bank has ranked the Ghana cedi as the best-performing currency in Africa over the past quarter. According to Agyap, the cedi’s stability and resilience, despite global economic challenges, highlight Ghana’s sound macroeconomic policies and effective fiscal management.

The juxtaposition of these events has sparked discussions across social media platforms, with many noting the contrast between high-profile legal dramas and positive economic news for the country. Analysts suggest that while legal battles involving prominent figures often capture headlines, the strength of the Ghanaian economy remains a testament to sound governance and strategic financial planning.

In his statement, Ken Agyap emphasized that the cedi’s performance reflects increased investor confidence, robust monetary policies, and disciplined financial management by the Bank of Ghana and the Ministry of Finance. He added, “This recognition by the World Bank should encourage all stakeholders to maintain transparency, accountability, and continued reform across sectors, including governance and legal frameworks.”

Meanwhile, supporters of Wontumi have remained vocal on social media, defending their leader and criticizing what they describe as ongoing political targeting. Conversely, Paul Yandoh’s camp insists that legal accountability must be upheld, and no individual or organization should be above scrutiny.

Observers note that the dual headlines — a legal showdown involving high-profile political figures and international recognition of the cedi — underscore the complexity of Ghana’s current landscape, where governance, law, and economic policy intersect in ways that continue to attract both national and global attention.

The High Court is expected to resume hearings in the coming weeks, while financial analysts continue to monitor the cedi’s performance and its implications for Ghana’s broader economic growth.

Ghana Prepares for Sunday Showdown to Seal World Cup Berth

Accra Sports Stadium
Accra Sports Stadium

Football fever is gripping Ghana as the Black Stars prepare to host Comoros on Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium in their final Group I match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, with qualification virtually secured.

Ghana currently leads Group I with 22 points, three points ahead of second-placed Madagascar, following their commanding 5-0 victory over the Central African Republic earlier this week. A single point from Sunday’s match will formally guarantee their place at the 2026 tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The Black Stars have qualified for four FIFA World Cup tournaments: 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022, missing only the 2018 Russia edition. Their best performance came in 2006 when they were the only African side to advance to the second round in Germany, followed by a quarterfinal appearance in South Africa 2010 that remains etched in national memory.

Sunday’s encounter carries extra significance. Comoros have proven difficult opponents in recent tournaments, making this fixture an opportunity for Ghana to settle scores while celebrating what should be their fifth World Cup qualification.

The nation’s 30-plus million inhabitants are famously passionate about football, earning Ghanaians the nickname “coaches” for their deep knowledge of the game. Ghana won the African Cup of Nations four times between 1963 and 1982, establishing themselves as continental powerhouses before other nations fully invested in the sport.

Captain Jordan Ayew has been exceptional throughout the qualifiers, recording seven goals and seven assists in nine matches, placing him among the world’s most productive players in the qualification rounds. The Leicester City forward’s recent performance against Central African Republic, where he scored and provided two assists, exemplified his leadership.

Ayew and his brother Andre have made history as sons of three-time African Footballer of the Year Abedi Pele. Both have captained Ghana to World Cup tournaments, with Andre leading the team that won the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup, making Ghana the first and only African nation to claim that title.

The current squad features world-class professionals including Mohammed Kudus, Antoine Semenyo, Thomas Partey, Kamaldeen Sulemana, Alidu Seidu, Fatawu Issahaku, Inaki Williams, Mohammed Salisu, Alexander Djiku, and Gideon Mensah. Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has emerged as a revelation, keeping the posts locked throughout the campaign.

Coach Otto Addo faced criticism after failing to qualify for the recent Africa Cup of Nations, but his World Cup qualifying campaign has been virtually flawless. The team remains unbeaten in the qualifiers, scoring freely while maintaining defensive solidity.

Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku’s leadership appears to have created an environment where confidence and success feed each other. Stephen Appiah, now Vice Chairman of the Black Stars management committee and the captain who led Ghana to their first World Cup in 2006, has expressed satisfaction with the current team’s performance and discipline.

Sunday’s match represents more than just qualification mathematics. It’s a celebration of Ghanaian football culture, a showcase for a talented generation, and potentially the final step toward another crack at the senior World Cup trophy that has long eluded the nation despite success at youth levels.

The Accra Sports Stadium will be packed with spectators expecting entertainment, goals, and ultimately, confirmation of what everyone already knows: Ghana is going to the World Cup.

My style of blogging has opened international doors – Kobby Kyei

0

Celebrated Ghanaian online journalist and humanitarian Kobby Kyei has revealed that his decision to focus on human-interest and developmental stories has earned him international recognition and opened doors beyond Ghana’s borders.

Speaking in an interview with Irene Adubea Aning on The Career Trail program, he explained that while many bloggers focused on entertainment and celebrity gossip, he carved out a unique niche in humanitarian storytelling.

If you check my Wikipedia, it says I once started as an entertainment blogger, but now I’m doing humanitarian work because I needed to find a niche for myself,” he said.

“Apart from Joy News, Adom TV, and a few traditional media, which blogger was going into rural communities to tell the stories of children and deprived communities? No one. I had to create that space on social media,” he continued.

He said his motivation was tied to the idea of leaving a digital footprint.

If I ask you about your grandmother’s mother, you may not know her. But imagine if in their time there was social media; we would all know our great-great-grandparents because their lives would be a search away.

“But things are not the same now. In our era, everything we do is going to remain because of the presence of social media. So for instance, my children’s children will just search and see what their grandfather did. So everything I do on social media today, someday, my children’s children will also know. That’s why I have decided to document my life in a positive light,” he explained.

According to Kobby Kyei, this unique approach has caught the attention of corporate organizations, diplomats, and international bodies.

“That decision opened a lot of diplomatic and international doors, and corporate bodies also accepted what I was doing,” he highlighted.

For him, blogging is not just about news and trends; it’s about creating a legacy that future generations can trace and learn from.

Former Veep of the Ghana Football Association George Afriyie, has opposed the sacking of Black Stars coach Otto Addo despite severe criticism from Ghanaians.

The former Dortmund youth trainer is on the verge of booking Ghana to the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be held in Mexico, Canada and USA. Otto Addo has just one more hurdle to clear thus against Comoros on Sunday in Accra. Just a draw hands the West African country ticket to the Mundial.

Despite, brilliant statistics in the World Cup qualifiers for Otto Addo, winning 7 matches and drawing 1, his future has become a subject of public debate with many still believing he is not the finest manager for Ghana and ought to be sacked.

Sports Minister Kofi Adams, in a recent interview, suggested that while Addo has shown promise, he has also benefited from a measure of luck, indicating some reservations about the coach’s long-term tenure.

‘I was brought up to add value to public service’ – NAPO cites decades of family politics as mandate for Impact

0

The 2024 Vice-Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo), has positioned his extensive public service career not as a personal ambition but as a generational mandate rooted in his family’s deep, decades-long history in Ghanaian politics.

In a reflective interview on Joy News about life after the 2024 General Elections, Dr. Prempeh, a four-term Member of Parliament and two-time Cabinet Minister, articulated his core philosophy: that political participation must fundamentally be about adding demonstrable value to the nation.

A Heritage of Public Service

Dr. Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, stressed that he was raised in an environment that instilled a non-negotiable commitment to the public good.

His lineage, which includes being a grandson of the 14th Asantehene, Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh II, and a nephew of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, provided a framework for political engagement beyond mere participation.

“I was brought up in a very politically aware family with a history of decades of partisan politics or active political life. That’s how I was brought up. And I was brought up to cherish one thing: public service and not only public serving, bringing value through public service and for public service,” he stated.

He further elaborated on this ethos of impact:

“Meaning you just don’t participate; you participate with the intention of making an impact. That is how I was brought up. Brought up to prove to myself that I can sit at the table with decision-makers and not only the elderly but true decision-makers.”

Track Record: Value Addition in Education and Energy

Dr. Prempeh’s public record spans over a decade and a half, demonstrating a commitment to high-impact policy reforms:

  • Parliamentary Tenure (2009–2025): He served four consecutive terms as MP for Manhyia South (previously Manhyia), winning with commanding majorities, including a landslide 87.17% of the votes cast in the 2016 General Elections.
  • Minister of Education (2017–2021): During his tenure, he successfully spearheaded the implementation of the government’s flagship Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme, which saw student enrolment increase from approximately 800,000 in 2016 to over 1.2 million by 2019, fundamentally expanding access to secondary education. His reforms also focused on comprehensive curriculum changes and the mainstreaming of Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
  • Minister of Energy (2021–2024): In this role, he was credited with stabilizing the power sector, overseeing the promotion of renewable energy projects like the Kaleo/Lawra Solar Project, and leading efforts to increase efficiency in the energy industry through the Energy Sector Recovery Programme (ESRP), aimed at resolving Ghana’s substantial energy sector debt.

His dedication to “making an impact” earned him several accolades, including the 2020 Harvard Ministerial Medal of Achievement in recognition of his significant work in strengthening public education.

Dr. Prempeh resigned from his ministerial post in July 2024 to dedicate his efforts to the NPP’s campaign as the Vice-Presidential Candidate.

Energy Expert Urges Formation of Crisis Team to Save Ghana’s Failing Oil Industry

0

Oil And Gas
Oil And Gas

Ghana’s upstream petroleum sector is teetering on the edge of collapse, and only a high-level technical taskforce can prevent total failure, according to Benjamin Nsiah, Executive Director of the Center for Environmental Management and Sustainable Energy (CEMSE).

The warning comes as oil production has plummeted from 71.44 million barrels in 2019 to what experts project could fall below 40 million barrels by year’s end, continuing a five-year downward spiral.

Nsiah argues the crisis demands immediate coordinated intervention across multiple sectors. He’s calling for a specialized team bringing together experts from energy, finance, environment, and private investment to diagnose the industry’s failures and chart a recovery path.

“We need to set up as a country by maybe building a stakeholder team, a technical team, to look at why we are not attracting the industry investment,” Nsiah told The High Street Journal.

The production decline has already devastated government revenues. Petroleum receipts collapsed by 56 percent in the first half of 2025, dropping from US$840.77 million to just US$370.34 million, crippling the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation’s operational capacity. For a nation that relies heavily on oil revenues to fund infrastructure and stabilize the cedi, the implications extend far beyond the energy sector itself.

What was once hailed as West Africa’s petroleum success story now struggles with aging infrastructure, stalled field development, and virtually nonexistent exploration activity. No new petroleum agreement has been signed since 2018, suggesting potential investors view Ghana’s regulatory environment as unattractive compared to competing jurisdictions.

The Public Interest and Accountability Committee’s latest report shows crude oil production plunged nearly 26 percent in the first half of 2025, with total output dropping to 18.42 million barrels. The combination has spooked investors who previously viewed Ghana as a regional leader in petroleum governance.

Without swift action, experts warn the sector faces complete collapse. The crisis threatens not just energy security but broader economic stability, including foreign exchange reserves and employment across the petroleum value chain.

Nsiah believes targeted funding for GNPC and a comprehensive strategy to restore investor confidence remain essential first steps. However, he emphasizes that piecemeal solutions won’t suffice. Only coordinated, multi-stakeholder intervention can reverse the downward spiral.

The clock is ticking for Ghana’s petroleum industry. Whether policymakers can mobilize the necessary political will and technical expertise may determine whether the sector survives or becomes a cautionary tale of squandered potential.

Nana Safo Kantanka is the son of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka Nana Safo Kantanka is the son of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka

Following the recent controversies surrounding who should be the ideal heir to inherit the late Apostle Dr Kwadwo Safo Kantanka’s empire, old videos concerning him and his children have resurfaced online.

One particular video that has been making waves on the internet for the past few days is a year-old interview granted by Nana Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, the second son and fifth born of the late inventor.

In the video sighted by GhanaWeb on October 10, 2025, Nana Safo Kantanka, who was speaking on Konnected Minds Podcast, noted that the reason why most inherited businesses do not survive is due to family disputes and the chaos of succession.

He explained that most families spend time fighting over inheritance instead of protecting the legacy left behind, adding that in most circumstances, such businesses do not survive for long due to the rivalry involved.

Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka declared son successor in resurfaced video

“There is always a problem with transition. If it is done early, it helps, but if it is done later, there is always chaos. People spend time with the chaos bit. Families spend time on why a particular person isn’t inheriting the property while there is a legacy to be protected,” he said.

Nana Kwadwo Safo Kantanka further noted that children mostly fight over inheritance, especially when their parents were involved in a polygamous marriage.

“The worst case is when you have a family where there are different mothers. That is where the problem is, because everyone is supporting a child to be at a certain point where they feel they would be comfortable,” he added.

Meanwhile, following the demise of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, another video has resurfaced online showing him indicating that his second son, Nana Kwadwo, should be the right heir to his enterprise.

According to the late inventor, he knew that Nana Kwadwo would be the successor to his empire right from his mother’s womb.

Ensure justice prevails in the face of cybercrimes – Judges urged

0

Justice Tanko Amadu, a Supreme Court Judge, has asked Judges to ensure that justice prevailed in the face of cybercrimes to deter online fraud and scams.

Justice Amadu, also the Director of the Judicial Training Institute, tasked the judges to continually learn and play their role with honour to protect citizens who toil to earn their upkeep.

Justice Amadu said this at a symposium on Cybercrime and Electronic Evidence for Ghanaian and Nigerian Judiciary held in Accra.

The symposium, the third in series, is held for judges and judicial officers from Ghana and Nigeria to strengthen collective capacity in tackling cybercrime.

It is organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat Cyber Unit, in conjunction with Ghana’s Judicial Training Institute (JTI) and the Ministry of Justice of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

It forms part of capacity building projects under the Commonwealth Cyber Declaration.

The symposium seeks to build the skills needed to investigate, prosecute, and adjudicate cybercrime cases across member countries.

The Commonwealth Secretariat’s Cyber Unit, since its establishment in 2018, has trained about 1,000 law enforcement officers, prosecutors and judicial officers from 55 Commonwealth countries on cybercrimes and electronic evidence matters.

Justice Amadu noted that cybercrimes extended beyond direct financial loss, undermining public trust in digital economy and online services.

Cybercrime also discouraged people from using e-banking or e-commerce for fear of being scammed, thereby slowing the growth of digital economies.

“Moreover, such crime can inflict serious reputational damage on our countries,” he said.

Unfortunately, Nigeria had long been cited as a major source of certain global scams (from the notorious “419” advance fee frauds to modern phishing and BEC rings) while Ghana has seen an emergence of so-called “sakawa” or online fraud groups, Justice Amadu said.

“If care is not taken, this notoriety can tarnish our global reputation and deter foreign investments,” he added.

Justice Amadu said both Ghana and Nigeria had taken significant steps to strengthen their legal, institutional, and operational frameworks for fighting cybercrime.

That included enacting and updating Legislation in accordance with global standards.

He said the courts had the responsibility of ensuring proper handling of electronic evidence including logs, emails, meta data, and forensic reports.

“Judges must insist on chain-of-custody standards, understand the potential for tampering and continually update their knowledge of emerging technologies to make a sound admissibility decisions.”

Additionally, he said: “Judges must interpret the law in ways that adapt to technological changes. This may require purposive readings of statutes for novel situations, such as cryptocurrency theft or cross boarder cyber-attacks, and openness to experts’ testimony.”

Furthermore, the court ought to act as a bridge between technical complexity and legal standards, ensuring that evidence was understood and applied correctly.

The Supreme Court Judge said the Judiciary must also take a balanced approach such that while imposing deterrent sentence, judges would uphold due process, protect privacy rights and avoid wrongful conviction based on unreliable or misunderstood digital evidence.

“Judicial remarks can also serve as a tool to encourage preventive policies, such as education and alternative career paths for tech-savvy youth.”

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has reported a sharp rise in online fraud and scams targeting Ghanaians.

In 2023 alone, over GHC3.56 million (approximately $300,000) was lost to online shopping and romance scam in Ghana.

By early 2025, the rate of cyber fraud accelerated further and in the first quarter of 2025, Ghana recorded GHC4.4 million in losses to online fraud with 350 reported cases in three months.

Ensure timely release of funds to SHSs to serve the intended purpose

Dr Barnabas Addai Amanfo is a renowned educationist Dr Barnabas Addai Amanfo is a renowned educationist

A renowned educationist, Dr Barnabas Addai Amanfo, has called on the government to ensure the timely payment of funds needed for the smooth running of Senior Secondary Schools across Ghana to enable them to improve the quality of education.

Dr Amanfo expressed concern over the continuous delay in releasing funds for the event, which has become a significant part of the yearly activities in Ghana’s second-cycle education system.

Reacting to the government’s recent announcement to release GH₵195.5 million to fund SHS feeding and settle outstanding arrears owed to Primetime Limited, organizers of the NSMQ, Dr Amanfo commended the decision but urged the government to release funds on time for effective preparation.

He said this during discussions on the Kumasi-based OTEC FM’s morning Show Nyansapo on Friday.

“Payment delays defeat the purpose of the quiz and could dampen the spirit of students and their coaches.

“It’s essential for the government to prioritize timely funding to ensure the success of the NSMQ.”

Dr Amanfo emphasised the importance of government attention to the NSMQ, stating that it has become a major event in the country’s education calendar.

“The NSMQ has become a significant part of our yearly activities, and the government should pay attention to that,” he added.

He praised the government’s decision to settle outstanding arrears owed to Primetime Limited, organizers of the quiz, and encouraged them to prioritize timely funding going forward.

Acting CJ urges 824 new lawyers to champion integrity and social justice

0

In a landmark ceremony at the Accra International Conference Centre on Friday, October 10, Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie administered the oath of office to 824 newly qualified lawyers, charging them to uphold the highest ethical standards and serve as beacons of justice for the vulnerable.

This year’s call to the bar marks one of the largest cohorts in recent years, reflecting the increasing demand for legal services in Ghana’s rapidly evolving economy.

According to the General Legal Council, the number of lawyers in Ghana has grown from just over 2,000 in 2010 to more than 6,500 in 2024, yet the country still maintains a ratio of approximately 1 lawyer per 5,000 citizens—far below the Commonwealth average.

A Call to Purpose and Service

Addressing the gathering of judicial officials, legal practitioners, families, and dignitaries, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie reminded the new lawyers of their profound responsibility to society.

Emphasizing service over self-interest, he urged them to prioritize the needs of the marginalized and uphold the integrity of the legal profession.

“You have chosen a path that demands courage, but it is a path that leads to purpose and fulfilling greatness. Congratulations again, our newly qualified lawyers, may you serve with humility and serve with purpose, above all, let your integrity shine,” Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie said.

Ghana’s legal sector is often called upon to address issues of access to justice, especially for the poor and disenfranchised. A 2023 report by the Legal Aid Commission found that over 70% of Ghanaians in rural areas lack adequate legal representation, underscoring the importance of the Chief Justice’s charge.

Debate Over Legal Education Reform

The Acting Chief Justice also weighed in on ongoing debates about legal education in Ghana, where calls for reform have intensified in recent years.

In 2022 alone, more than 2,500 applicants sought admission to the Ghana School of Law, though only 850 were admitted, sparking calls for wider access.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie cautioned, however, that expansion must not come at the expense of quality.

“We must, however, ensure that the reforms we seek do not merely expand the numbers but truly refine the very purpose of legal education of Ghana in the 21st Century,” he stated.

Legal experts have warned that while increased enrollment may help address the country’s lawyer-to-citizen disparity, it must be balanced with rigorous standards to maintain the quality and reputation of the Ghanaian Bar.

The General Legal Council has recently introduced new curriculum requirements and continuous professional development to ensure lawyers are equipped for modern legal challenges, including technology, international trade, and human rights.

Diversity on Display: International and Mature Graduates

The ceremony also celebrated diversity within the new cohort, with the swearing-in of Chienchun Chen, a 47-year-old Taiwanese national. Chen’s achievement drew warm applause from guests and underscored the growing international appeal of Ghana’s legal education system.

In recent years, the Ghana School of Law has admitted students from over 10 countries, reflecting the globalization of the country’s legal sector.

Looking Ahead

As the 824 new lawyers embark on their professional journeys, they join a community tasked with upholding the rule of law and advancing justice in Ghana.

The Judiciary, which in 2023 handled over 35,000 cases nationwide, continues to emphasize the need for ethical and dedicated legal practitioners.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s rallying call—serving not just personal interests but the nation’s most vulnerable—echoes at a time when legal services are more needed than ever.

Today’s challenges must illuminate our path forward – Acting Chief Justice

0

Acting Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has issued a powerful call for an “urgent and meaningful reform” of the nation’s legal education system, describing the current situation as a “critical turning point” for the future of the legal profession.

The Acting Chief Justice delivered his compelling address on Friday, October 10, during the formal enrolment ceremony for 824 newly qualified lawyers, a figure that, while substantial, underscores the mounting challenges and access crisis at the Ghana School of Law (GSL).

Crisis of Access and Quality

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s remarks come against the backdrop of staggering data on admission bottlenecks. The GSL entrance examination, administered by the Independent Examinations Committee (IEC) of the General Legal Council (GLC), has seen tens of thousands of LLB graduates locked out of professional training in recent years.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who assumed the acting role in April 2025, framed the crisis as an opportunity for revitalisation.

Speaking to the newly inducted members of the Bar, he declared that his appointment comes “at a defining moment — a season both for reflection and urgent reform in legal education in our beloved Ghana.”

The Imperative for Modernization

The Acting Chief Justice acknowledged that the challenges extend far beyond mere numbers. They include pervasive questions regarding educational quality, inadequate infrastructure at GSL campuses, and the need to integrate modern legal practice, especially in an era dominated by technology like Artificial Intelligence (AI).

“But challenges must not be seen as signs of decay but banks of renewal. The challenges we face today are the very light that must illuminate our path forward,” he asserted.

He noted the intensity of the ongoing public discourse, confirming that “the airwaves are already thick with the news of reforms, as hope and frustration for the aspiring lawyer intermingle in equal measure.”

Beyond Quantity: A Call for Purposeful Reform

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s primary injunction to the General Legal Council and the Ghana School of Law was to adopt reforms that are qualitative, not just quantitative. Ghana’s legal community must look beyond the immediate pressure to admit more students and focus on the kind of legal professional the country requires for the 21st Century.

“The reforms we pursue must go beyond merely increasing student numbers,” he stressed. “We must refine the very purpose of legal education to meet the demands of the 21st century.”

The onus is now firmly placed on the GLC, the statutory body responsible for legal education, to devise a structural solution that resolves the acute access crisis while ensuring that the 824 new lawyers enrolled, and those who follow, are equipped with the skills and ethical standards necessary to serve the Ghanaian jurisdiction.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who was himself called to the Bar in 1983, is expected to champion this reform agenda throughout his tenure.

Black Stars must punish Comoros on Sunday – Nii Lante Vanderpuye

Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has charged the Black Stars to punish Comoros on Sunday.

Ghana will host Comoros in their final game of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars have lost twice against Comoros. Ghana suffered elimination after losing to Comoros during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament before losing again in the Matchday 2 fixture of the World Cup qualifiers in Moroni.

With Ghana needing just a point to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, Vanderpuye has urged the team to seek revenge against Comoros.

“Against Comoros, we have qualified already. Even if we lose, Madagascar would need to win by eight goals to overtake us, which is practically impossible,” he said.

“But we should still win against Comoros because of the painful defeat we suffered in the past. We have to prove to them that we are Ghana,” he added.

Kick-off for the game is scheduled for 19:00 GMT.

Having featured in the 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022 World Cups in Germany, South Africa, Brazil, and Qatar, respectively, the Black Stars are determined to make a fifth appearance on football’s biggest stage.

Delayed Rail Development in Ghana Presents Challenges for Tourism, but Growth Continues

Published on
October 11, 2025

Train

Ghana had intended to have the Tema-Mpakadan line reopened to the public on the 1st of October 2025. However, this intention has met considerable setbacks due to considerable technical issues. The line, which is 97.6 km long, is part of a bigger vision that seeks to connect Tema Port to the eastern part of the country, and later on to Burkina Faso, with the hope of improving trade and tourism in the area. The technical issues that occurred, however, led to the first passenger service arriving late at the terminal, which has halted progress on this vital piece of infrastructure.

This reopening is the first stage in the vision for 1,000 km of standard gauge railway spanning the country, and will connect Tema directly to Burkina Faso. It will improve a number of internal links in the country.

The first phase of the line has already been set in motion and was inaugurated in November 2024, with the aim of connecting Ghana to Burkina Faso and improving rail links in the country. It was inaugurated by the former presiding leader, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as part of the rail development initiative. Ever since the track was to some extent completed, people’s hopes for the project have been high; however, the operations of the line were stopped soon after commencement due to some track defects. A repair system has since been initiated and is now running under the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA).

Difficulties in Rail Infrastructure in Ghana and Its Consequences on Tourism

Many problems have arisen as Ghana tries to restore its rail network, such as its infrastructure, technical problems, and the condition of its rolling stock and railways. These problems have delayed the completion of railways that the country anticipated and, in turn, stunted the growth of rail tourism in the country.

International and domestic tourism, in particular, have the greatest potential to be fueled by the Tema-Mpakadan railway. Along with providing easy access to these destinations and boosting the potential of tourism in these regions, the railway line would also improve access to the natural and urban attractions of the country, such as Accra, Kumasi, and the Volta. Railways in these regions would not only improve transportation but also have the potential to remove technical challenges that currently detract from realising these benefits.

Considering Ghana’s amazing cultural heritage and the rising interest in eco-tourism, the country has rail tourism potential as well. Unique regions of Ghana would be accessible to advanced travellers, thus providing an incredible opportunity to aid the economies of those areas. On the other hand, travellers would be able to explore the countryside, historical sites, and rugged lands while contemplating the untouched nature of the country.

The Sekondi-Takoradi-Kojokrom Line: Another Blow to the Hopes of Rail Tourism

Ghana’s rail network has also struggled with the Sekondi-Takoradi-Kojokrom line, alongside the issues already cited with the Tema-Mpakadan line. The Sekondi-Takoradi-Kojokrom line, which was inaugurated in 2016, has encountered numerous rolling stock and track quality concerns. Passenger services were suspended in March 2020 due to the conversion of the rail from 1067mm to 1435mm gauge. The line has been completely suspended since 2024, and while the service resumed sporadically later that year, the line has been completely suspended since 2024.

The issues with the Tema-Mpakadan and Sekondi-Takoradi-Kojokrom lines showcase the issues that come with attempting to revitalise a neglected railway system in Ghana. The railway sector is stagnating, which in turn limits domestic travel, tourism routes, and comprehensive development that could span across the entire country and incorporate significant geological and historical points of interest.

Economic and Tourism Impact of Rail Development

Ghana, with its ongoing railway development, is vital to both tourism and transportation, especially those involving key tourist attractions and improving access to tourist facilities situated in remote locations. Unfortunately, delays in reopening the Tema-Mpakadan and the Sekondi-Takoradi-Kojokrom line and the suspension of the other tend to put a damper on expectations for the tourism industry.

The Ghana Tourism Authority has pointed out the substantial impact of railways on the overall development of tourism in Ghana. As railways are a viable, economical and proven the most efficient and legitimate green sustainable mode of transport, its advancement will put Ghana on the world tourism map for culture, history and natural beauty. On the other hand, the rail infrastructure has to be operational for tourism to thrive.

The Government Initiatives and Future Rail Tourism Perspectives

Together with local authorities, the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) is eager to eliminate the technical issues and contribute to the sustainable development of the Tema-Mpakadan line and other rail projects. The GRDA has geared its attention to the substantial development of the track infrastructure and improvement of rolling stock, in addition to the strict observance of operational and safety claim standards before the full servicing.

The government’s focus on the tourism infrastructure and the potential use of the railways for tourism dovetails with the broader aim of developing sustainable tourism across the entire country. Like other developing railways, there will be significant improvements in the movement of people and goods within the domestic borders. Besides that, foreign nationals will be able to appreciate the scenic splendour of Ghana on imposingly courteous terms.

Hence, the country’s pending new railways and other enhancements to the public transportation system will give, for tourism, improvements that come from more facile movement to and within major urban, natural, and cultural attractions. The future of railways in Ghana seems to be bright, provided that proper measures to the existing technical issues in the system are dealt with.

Conclusion: The Road Ahead for Ghana’s Rail Tourism.

There are real issues and limiting factors to the country’s tourism with trains on the railways, but there’s still plenty of scope for improvements. This is more pronounced with the fact that new investments in the country’s transport system are likely to come from the government. The Tema-Mpakadan line, along with other railways in the country, will increase access to the scenic and cultural pride of Ghana.

Ghana rail tourism is poised to enhance the country’s tourism offerings with the ongoing resolution of technical issues with the rail network and the expansion of the network. Tourism in Ghana’s economy will flourish as visitors will have quicker and more efficient means of transportation. This will also have a positive impact on the growth of Ghana’s economy.

Ghana rail tourism, Ghana railway development, tourism transport Ghana, travel to Ghana, rail tourism Ghana, and for more context with her geopolitical setting, consider ilres (Ghana train services, and the country’s growing transportation).

The decision not to sack Otto Addo after failing to qualify for the 2025 AFCON has proven beneficial to the country as he is just a point away from qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Otto Addo faced an avalanche of backlash after his side failed to qualify for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, leaving many Ghanaians disappointed.

However, calls for his dismissal were ignored by the leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), who trusted Otto Addo to turn the crashing ship around.

Napo opens up on life after 2024 election defeat

0

The 2024 Vice-Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo), has revealed plans to step away from intense partisan politics for a period of personal reflection and technological retraining.

In a recent interview on Joy News, Dr. Prempeh stated he is prioritising mentoring, community engagement, and acquiring advanced skills, specifically a 20-day course in Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Dr. Prempeh, who also served as the Minister of Energy, is using the post-election period to focus on “different loves” following the defeat after partnering with former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to represent the NPP at the last presidential polls.

He emphasised the need for leaders to continuously upgrade their knowledge in a rapidly evolving world.

AI: The New Frontier of Governance

Dr. Prempeh articulated a strong belief in the transformative power of AI, underscoring its relevance for governance and daily life.

He framed AI not just as a passing trend but as a fundamental shift in human capability.

His decision to pursue specialised training—a 20-day intensive course in AI—highlights the growing recognition among Ghana’s top policymakers that technological literacy is crucial for national planning and economic development.

The global AI market is projected to reach over $1.8 trillion by 2030, and Ghana’s leadership must understand its integration into energy management, healthcare (where Dr. Prempeh previously served as minister), and public service delivery.

Period of Reflection and Community Focus

The former Vice-Presidential hopeful confirmed that his political focus has temporarily shifted from the campaign trail to more foundational activities.

“I’ve been doing a lot of stuff, actually. Political life, partisan life, has been interrupted, but I have different loves that I can now promote,” Dr. Prempeh explained.

He described his current phase as a “period of reflections, more engagement with the community and citizens, and learning new things”.

This strategic withdrawal into education and community work aligns with his long-held passion for youth development and knowledge acquisition, which he now intends to vigorously promote after the conclusion of the 2024 general elections.

The Mahama-led administration has pledged to partner with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to curb the growing incidents of attacks on journalists and to strengthen media safety nationwide.

Speaking at the launch of the GJA Awards in Accra, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said the government is committed to fostering a safer working environment for journalists through stronger collaboration with media stakeholders and security agencies.

“There are sections of our society who continue to view the media as nosy and people who should not get close to their activities, and therefore want to abuse the rights of media practitioners. Thankfully, in more recent times, we’ve not heard of such reports. That is because firm instructions have been issued to all state security agencies to reform the way in which they relate to the media and to show a bit more courtesy than we are doing at the moment,” he said.

Mr Ofosu further noted that President Mahama’s government remains open to dialogue and cooperation with the GJA to promote press freedom and professional excellence.

“Mahama and the cabinet that he leads are willing to work closely with the GJA to ensure that this unhealthy development is stemmed and that it does not decay, even as we make more progress to advance the frontiers of media freedoms,” he assured.

He emphasised that his ministry operates an open-door policy to allow for constructive engagement with journalists, adding that “after all, we are partners.”

The ceremony also marked the inauguration of a nine-member committee to vet entries for the upcoming GJA Awards.

How President Tinubu ordered ex-minister’s resignation

0

Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji

More details have emerged on the resignation of former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji.

Findings by Saturday PUNCH revealed that the embattled minister was ordered to resign following allegations of certificate forgery against him.

Nnaji was accused of forging his BSc and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificates.

The former minister claimed to have obtained his degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Enugu State, in 1985 — a claim the university denied.

Presidential aides told Saturday PUNCH that President Bola Tinubu invited Nnaji to the Presidential Villa, where he was directed to resign.

The scandal

Nnaji’s ordeal began when Premium Times published an investigation alleging that he forged his degree and NYSC certificates, which he submitted to the President and the Nigerian Senate during his ministerial screening in 2023.

The online publication maintained that Nnaji did not complete his university education.

Premium Times, through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to UNN, asked the university to release Nnaji’s academic records.

In a letter dated October 2, 2025, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, informed Premium Times that UNN did not issue Nnaji’s certificate, as he had not completed his studies.

The ex-minister then approached the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to stop UNN from releasing his academic records.

Nnaji, through an ex parte motion marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1909/2025, asked the court to restrain the university from releasing or tampering with his academic records.

In court documents filed in the suit, Nnaji admitted that he had yet to collect his degree certificate — contrary to his earlier submission of a certificate during his ministerial screening.

Justice Hausa Yilwa, in a ruling delivered on September 22, dismissed Nnaji’s request.

Resignation

Following the publication of his open admission, Nnaji resigned his ministerial appointment.

He said the decision was taken to protect his integrity and prevent distractions to the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to him, his resignation followed “an orchestrated, sustained campaign of falsehood, politically motivated, and malicious attacks” targeted at his person and office over the past week.

This series is all about honoring the influencers who show up authentically, challenge beauty standards, and use their platforms to amplify inclusivity in bold, beautiful ways.

Last week, we shined the spotlight on Kat Freeman, the pageant queen, heart attack survivor, and homelessness advocate who’s proving that fashion and purpose can walk hand in hand. This week, we’re turning up the volume, literally, with Ebony Martin (@theebonymartin), a Houston-based creative whose love for music and fashion strikes all the right notes.

Why This Series Matters

Did you know that plus size fashion influencers often generate higher engagement rates than many traditional fashion creators? According to Influencer Hero, many top plus size influencers in the U.S. consistently average engagement rates above 2%, proving that audiences are actively tuning in and showing up for size-inclusive content.

And it’s not just the big names… data from The Social Cat reveals that nano and micro influencers, which many plus size creators fall under, drive the highest engagement across all categories, with rates around 2.71% for nano and 1.81% for micro influencers. Translation? Plus size creators aren’t just being seen… they’re being celebrated.

Creators like Ebony are why this space is thriving. She’s building visibility, representation, and a community grounded in joy and self-expression.

Meet Ebony Martin: A Voice That Inspires… On Stage and Online

Plus Influencer Spotlight: Ebony Martin on Music, Fashion, and Fearless Authenticity

Ebony’s journey as a creator began with something most of us can relate to, a moment of burnout. As a professional opera singer, she found herself seeking an outlet for creativity that felt freer and more personal. What started as casual posts celebrating music, fashion, and fun quickly evolved into a movement of authenticity and self-expression.

“I started sharing my love for music, fashion, and creativity online at a time when I was feeling burnt out in the opera industry,” Ebony shares. “What began as a fun outlet has grown into a space where I can tell my story, connect with others, and build a community that celebrates individuality and authenticity.”

Now, Ebony’s page is a symphony of bold fashion choices, body liberation, and radical honesty about navigating antifatness and accessibility in creative industries.

“I realized my content was making an impact when people related to the struggles I highlight, like antifatness and lack of accessibility, while also finding inspiration in fashion from someone who looks like them,” she says. “It showed me the power of showing up as myself fully.”

Style in Every Key

When it comes to style, Ebony Martin describes her look as fun, varied, and authentic, and that’s exactly what she delivers. Her outfits are a celebration of her influences: her grandmothers’ feminine flair and the bold, rhythmic confidence of Hip Hop culture.

She’s not afraid to play with proportion, show a little skin, or break a few rules in the name of self-love. “I love a crop and a cut out!” she laughs. “I just love showing skin in fun ways, so any piece that gives me the opportunity to do that, I instantly feel more confident.”

For Ebony, clothing is about creativity, not constraint. “If possible, I like to size up in a lot of my clothing so I can style my pieces easily in a variety of ways,” she shares. Her personal style motto? Comfort, versatility, and confidence, always.

And don’t get her started on vanity sizing: “I hate squeezing into clothes to fit vanity numbers regardless of if it has stretch. If you don’t want to hold my size, then you don’t want to hold my money.”

That energy? We love to see it.

Using Fashion as a Mic

Ebony’s platform isn’t just about showcasing outfits, it’s about amplifying conversations. Through her content, she calls out the lack of true inclusivity in fashion while highlighting brands that get it right.

“I use my platform to challenge beauty standards by sharing my size unafraid when reviewing and highlighting brands that showcase true size inclusivity, often above a 3X,” she says. “I aim to make fashion accessible, celebrate all bodies, and push the conversation toward a more inclusive, unapologetic industry.”

And when she’s not pushing for change in fashion? She’s doing it through music.

Ebony Martin and her husband co-founded Music Lives, a nonprofit built over the last five years that’s now wrapping up its “Spirituals With Friends” concert tour. Their final show is in Chicago at Grace Episcopal Church, Oak Park, and yes, it’s completely free. “We’re finishing our last concert of the tour and already planning a new one for next year,” she shares. “I’m also working on my first partnership with Music Lives, so fingers crossed that it pulls through!”

Influence With Intention

When asked how she defines influence, Ebony Martin doesn’t hesitate: “Influence is how you shake people’s worldview. If you’re not making people second guess something, you’re not influencing anyone.”

Her impact lies in her ability to make people feel seen. Through her work, she reminds her followers that people who look like her live full, fun, and free lives and no one else gets to define their worth.

“How people view you doesn’t have to define you or your happiness,” Ebony says. “At the end of the day, when people are trying to make you feel bad about yourself, remember they don’t pay your bills, so their opinion doesn’t matter.”

‘Newsfile’ set to unravel ORAL delays, NAIMOS invasion and Jakpa vs Dame this Saturday

0

Ghana’s most anticipated current affairs programme, Joy News’ Newsfile, is set to ignite national debate this Saturday, October 11, 2025, with a deep dive into three of the country’s most volatile legal and political controversies.

Hosted by Samson Lardy Anyenini, the three-hour programme, airing from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, promises to unravel the complexities behind major alleged acts of corruption, the ‘galamsey’ menace, and high-profile legal clashes.

The programme’s focus will primarily address questions of justice, accountability, and the integrity of the state’s legal and mining institutions.

Topic 1: Oral—Legal Delay or Deal-Cutting Sabotage?

The first major segment will investigate a high-stakes legal matter under the banner: “ORAL: LEGAL DELAY OR DEAL-CUTTING SABOTAGE?”.

This segment is expected to analyse the procedural handling of a significant legal case and examine whether the observed delays are standard judicial processes or are the result of deliberate actions designed to subvert justice.

Discussions will likely centre on the impact of prolonged legal battles on public confidence and the potential for political interference in sensitive prosecutions.

Topic 2: NAIMOS—Rampage, Gold Under Rail, Kingpins?

The second, and potentially most explosive, topic will focus on the severe threat of illegal mining, asking: “NAIMOS: RAMPAGE, GOLD UNDER RAIL, KINGPINS?”

This segment promises to scrutinise the devastating environmental impact of ‘galamsey’ and the alleged scale of the operations, specifically addressing reports of gold mining activities taking place directly beneath crucial national infrastructure, such as railway lines.

This level of recklessness puts thousands of lives at risk and threatens critical transport links vital for economic activity.

The discussion will connect to the broader concerns about the failure to stop illegal mining, which has been labelled an “existential threat” to Ghana by civil society groups like OccupyGhana.

The panel is expected to confront the persistent issue of ‘kingpins’—the powerful sponsors of galamsey—who often evade prosecution despite the clear environmental devastation caused by their operations.

Topic 3: JAKPA VS DAME—Justice or Vendetta?

The final segment will dissect a high-profile personal and political clash: “JAKPA VS DAME: JUSTICE OR VENDETTA?”.

This segment will explore the intricate dynamics behind the clash between two significant political or public figures, examining whether the current legal or public confrontation is driven by a sincere pursuit of justice and accountability or is merely a manifestation of a personal or political ‘vendetta’.

The outcome of this discussion could have far-reaching implications for trust in political leadership and the mechanisms of public accountability.

Viewers are anticipating a candid and analytical discussion on these critical national issues, which will be available across Joy 99.7 FM, Joy News, and the station’s streaming and podcast platforms.

IMF reaches staff-level agreement with Ghana for $385m disbursement

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reached a staff-level agreement with the Government of Ghana to conclude the fifth review of the country’s $3 billion Extended Credit Facility (ECF).

Once approved by the IMF Executive Board, Ghana will unlock US$385 million in fresh funding.

This development signals continued confidence in the country’s economic recovery trajectory.

The IMF mission, led by Ruben Atoyan, held discussions with Ghanaian authorities in Accra from September 29 to October 10, 2025, focusing on the nation’s policy and reform progress under the ECF arrangement approved in May 2023.

This new disbursement will bring total IMF support to about US$2.83 billion since the start of the programme.

According to the IMF, macroeconomic stabilisation is taking hold, supported by stronger growth, falling inflation, and a rebounding cedi.

Growth in the first half of 2025 outperformed expectations, driven by robust services and agricultural output, while international reserves accumulation exceeded programme targets.

The cedi also recorded significant appreciation, buoyed by strong export performance, particularly from gold and cocoa.

The Fund projects Ghana’s economic growth to reach 4.8% in 2026, with inflation stabilising within the Bank of Ghana’s 8±2% target band, paving the way for gradual monetary easing.

Ghana’s current account surplus is expected to support continued reserve build-up, although risks from global commodity price volatility persist.

On the fiscal front, the government recorded a primary surplus of 1.1% of GDP in the first eight months of 2025, on track to meet its 1.5% year-end target.

The IMF commended authorities for maintaining fiscal discipline under the Fiscal Responsibility Framework, which aims to achieve sustainable budget surpluses through 2026.

The statement also highlighted notable progress in Ghana’s energy sector reforms, including the renegotiation of legacy debts and power purchase agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

The adoption of quarterly tariff adjustments and improved payment mechanisms has enhanced sector stability and transparency.

Debt restructuring efforts under the G20 Common Framework are advancing steadily. Ghana has finalised bilateral deals with five creditor nations and continues negotiations with the remaining commercial creditors.

The IMF noted that Ghana’s debt sustainability outlook has improved, reflecting disciplined fiscal management and upgraded macroeconomic performance.

Monetary policy has also shifted to support growth. With inflation trending downward, the Bank of Ghana has reduced its policy rate by 650 basis points to 21.5%, while maintaining a structured foreign exchange framework to smooth market volatility and strengthen reserves.

In the financial sector, authorities are executing a reform and recapitalisation plan for state-owned banks, expected to conclude by the end of 2025.

Measures to reduce non-performing loans and bolster crisis management frameworks are underway to safeguard financial stability.

The IMF also acknowledged progress on governance and transparency reforms, with a new Governance Diagnostic Assessment completed and set for publication.

The Fund urged continued oversight of state-owned enterprises, particularly in the gold, cocoa, and energy sectors, to enhance accountability and efficiency.

The IMF team expressed appreciation to Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Maxwell Opoku-Afari, and other government officials for their continued cooperation and commitment to reform.

The fifth ECF review marks a major milestone in Ghana’s ongoing economic turnaround.

With inflation easing, fiscal discipline improving, and debt restructuring progressing, the forthcoming IMF disbursement could reinforce confidence among investors and development partners — a timely boost as Ghana seeks to consolidate its recovery and strengthen macroeconomic resilience.

Judge dismisses Drake’s lawsuit over Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’ diss track

Drake's lawsuit against Kendrick Lamar has been thrown out of court Drake’s lawsuit against Kendrick Lamar has been thrown out of court

A federal judge on Thursday dismissed the defamation lawsuit Drake brought against his own record label, Universal Music Group, for publishing and promoting Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us.”

District Judge Jeannette Vargas concluded that the Grammy-winning song – where Lamar infamously claimed Drake was a “certified pedophile” – was an expression of pure opinion and not an assertion of facts.

Therefore, Drake, who denied the allegation, couldn’t sue for defamation.

Drake did not sue Lamar, who was not accused of wrongdoing.

The ruling means Drake’s case against UMG is now over, though he can appeal the decision.

“We intend to appeal today’s ruling, and we look forward to the Court of Appeals reviewing it,” a spokesperson for Drake told CNN on Thursday night.

The ruling is a major victory for UMG, which has insisted from the beginning that the case was “frivolous” and “illogical.” (Drake sued UMG because Lamar is an Interscope Records artist, which is a division of UMG. Drake’s current label is Republic Records, which is also part of UMG.)

“From the outset, this suit was an affront to all artists and their creative expression and never should have seen the light of day,” a UMG spokesperson said on Thursday. “We’re pleased with the court’s dismissal and look forward to continuing our work successfully promoting Drake’s music and investing in his career.”

Kendrick Lamar performs during halftime of the NFL Super Bowl 59 football game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans, Feb. 9, 2025.

The judge determined that Lamar’s “offensive” accusations against Drake were a protected expression of opinion. Her 38-page ruling included a line-by-line breakdown of lyrics from the songs Drake and Lamar released last year at the height of their feud, where Drake and Lamar traded increasingly personal and unverified insults in a series of songs.

“The average listener is not under the impression that a diss track is the product of a thoughtful or disinterested investigation, conveying to the public fact-checked verifiable content,” Vargas wrote.

The judge also said, “the broader context of a heated rap battle, with incendiary language and offensive accusations hurled by both participants, would not incline the reasonable listener to believe that ‘Not Like Us’ imparts verifiable facts” about Drake.

Drake filed the lawsuit in January, and the case was in the evidence-gathering stage known as discovery before the judge threw out the lawsuit Thursday.

“Not Like Us” went on to win multiple Grammys earlier this year and was also featured as part of Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show performance in February.

Week 5 Match Preview – Medeama vs Dreams FC

Medeama SC will face Dreams FC at the TnA Stadium in Tarkwa Medeama SC will face Dreams FC at the TnA Stadium in Tarkwa

Medeama SC will look to climb to the summit of the Ghana Premier League when they face Dreams FC at the TNA Stadium in Tarkwa on Friday.

The defending champions returned to winning ways last weekend with a hard-fought victory over Nations FC — a result that lifted them to second place on the table, just one point behind leaders Heart of Lions.

A win in front of their home fans could see them end the weekend on top, and given their strong form in Tarkwa, they will be confident of doing so.

The Mauve and Yellow have maintained a perfect home record this season and boast an impressive recent run against Dreams FC, winning three of their last five league meetings at the TNA Stadium.

Head coach Ibrahim Tanko’s men have found their rhythm again and will aim to keep the pressure on the early pacesetters.

Dreams FC, on the other hand, are enduring a difficult start to the campaign. The “Still Believe” side sit 17th on the log with just one point from four matches (L3, D1).

Their 1-1 draw with Vision FC last weekend offered a glimmer of hope, but their lack of cutting edge in front of goal continues to concern head coach Winfred Dormon.

“We are playing some very interesting football, but the results haven’t gone our way,” Dormon told club media ahead of the game. “It’s only a matter of time before the goals start coming and the wins follow. We just need to stay focused and keep believing.”

Having scored only twice and conceded five times this season, Dreams FC will need a major turnaround to challenge a dominant Medeama side.

Dormon’s men must produce their best performance yet to avoid another difficult evening in Tarkwa.

Medeama’s home form makes them overwhelming favourites, but Dreams FC will draw motivation from their underdog status as they search for their first win of the season.

A positive result in Tarkwa could serve as a turning point, while Medeama’s focus remains firmly on reclaiming the top spot and reinforcing their title defence.
