Delayed Rail Development in Ghana Presents Challenges for Tourism, but Growth Continues

Ghana had intended to have the Tema-Mpakadan line reopened to the public on the 1st of October 2025. However, this intention has met considerable setbacks due to considerable technical issues. The line, which is 97.6 km long, is part of a bigger vision that seeks to connect Tema Port to the eastern part of the country, and later on to Burkina Faso, with the hope of improving trade and tourism in the area. The technical issues that occurred, however, led to the first passenger service arriving late at the terminal, which has halted progress on this vital piece of infrastructure.

The Sekondi-Takoradi-Kojokrom line, which was inaugurated in 2016, has encountered numerous rolling stock and track quality concerns. Passenger services were suspended in March 2020 due to the conversion of the rail from 1067mm to 1435mm gauge. The line has been completely suspended since 2024, and while the service resumed sporadically later that year, the line has been completely suspended since 2024.

The issues with the Tema-Mpakadan and Sekondi-Takoradi-Kojokrom lines showcase the issues that come with attempting to revitalise a neglected railway system in Ghana. The railway sector is stagnating, which in turn limits domestic travel, tourism routes, and comprehensive development that could span across the entire country and incorporate significant geological and historical points of interest.
