Top 10 Ghanaian Dishes That Define the Nation’s Culture

0

Ghanaian cuisine is a vibrant tapestry of flavors, textures, and traditions that reflect the country’s rich cultural heritage. Rooted in local ingredients, communal dining, and centuries-old recipes, these dishes are more than just food—they are a celebration of Ghana’s history, diversity, and spirit. From hearty staples to fiery street snacks, here are 10 Ghanaian dishes that embody the soul of the nation, crafted to showcase their unique place in Ghanaian culture.

1. Egusi

Egusi stew, a beloved dish across West Africa, holds a special place in Ghanaian kitchens. Made from ground melon seeds, this thick, nutty stew is simmered with tomatoes, onions, and peppers, often enriched with palm oil and packed with spinach or bitter leaves. It’s typically paired with staples like fufu or boiled yam, and proteins like fish, goat, or chicken add depth. Egusi represents Ghana’s communal dining culture, where families gather around a shared bowl, dipping and savoring the bold, earthy flavors that tell a story of resourcefulness and tradition.

2. Etor

Etor is a cherished dish, particularly among the Akan people of Ghana, showcasing the versatility of plantains and yams. This mashed delicacy is made by boiling and pounding ripe plantains or yams into a smooth, velvety texture, then blending it with palm oil for a rich, golden hue. Often garnished with roasted peanuts or boiled eggs, etor is both a celebratory dish for special occasions and a comforting everyday meal. Its vibrant color and creamy consistency reflect Ghana’s love for transforming humble ingredients into something extraordinary.

3. Fufu

Fufu is the heartbeat of Ghanaian cuisine, a starchy staple that unites the nation’s diverse ethnic groups. Made by pounding boiled cassava, plantains, or yams into a smooth, elastic dough, fufu is served with soul-warming soups like groundnut (peanut), palm nut, or light soup (a spicy tomato-based broth). Eaten with the hands, fufu is a tactile experience, where diners pinch off a piece, shape it, and dip it into the flavorful broth. Its presence at family gatherings and festivals underscores Ghana’s emphasis on togetherness and shared meals.

4. Jollof Rice

No list of Ghanaian dishes is complete without jollof rice, a fiery, one-pot rice dish that sparks friendly rivalry across West Africa. Ghana’s version is a flavor-packed blend of rice cooked in a rich tomato, pepper, and onion stew, infused with spices like ginger, garlic, and bay leaves. Served with grilled chicken, fish, or vegetables, jollof is a staple at celebrations, from weddings to birthdays. Its bold red hue and smoky undertones embody Ghana’s vibrant, festive spirit, making it a cultural icon that transcends borders.

5. Kelewele

Kelewele is Ghana’s ultimate street-food snack, turning ripe plantains into a spicy, addictive treat. Cubed plantains are marinated in a fiery blend of ginger, cayenne, cloves, and other spices, then deep-fried to a caramelized crisp. The result is a perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and savory, often enjoyed as a late-night bite or side dish. Sold by vendors in bustling markets, kelewele captures Ghana’s lively street culture and knack for transforming simple ingredients into unforgettable flavors.

6. Kenkey

Kenkey, a fermented corn dough dumpling, is a cornerstone of Ga cuisine in southern Ghana. Wrapped in corn husks or banana leaves and boiled, kenkey has a slightly sour, chewy texture that pairs beautifully with spicy pepper sauce, fried fish, or stews. Whether it’s Ga kenkey (smoother and wrapped in corn husks) or Fante kenkey (denser and wrapped in banana leaves), this dish reflects Ghana’s coastal heritage and reliance on maize. It’s a symbol of resilience, as fermentation preserves food in a tropical climate.

7. Konkonte

Konkonte, made from dried and ground cassava, is a humble yet beloved dish, especially in rural Ghana. This brown, porridge-like meal is prepared by stirring cassava flour into boiling water until it forms a smooth, doughy consistency. Often paired with groundnut soup or palm nut stew, konkonte is a testament to Ghana’s resourcefulness, turning affordable staples into nourishing meals. Its earthy flavor and satisfying texture make it a comforting dish that connects Ghanaians to their agricultural roots.

8. Tubaani

Tubaani, also known as steamed bean cakes, is a protein-packed dish popular in northern Ghana. Made from ground black-eyed peas blended with spices and steamed in leaves, tubaani has a soft, fluffy texture similar to a savory pudding. It’s typically served with spicy pepper sauce or shea butter oil, often alongside porridge or as a standalone snack. Tubaani reflects the ingenuity of northern Ghanaian cuisine, where plant-based ingredients shine, and its simplicity makes it a favorite for everyday meals.

9. Tuo Zaafi

Tuo Zaafi, or TZ, is a northern Ghanaian staple that embodies the region’s culinary identity. This thick, stretchy porridge is made from millet, maize, or sorghum flour and served with hearty soups like ayoyo (a green leafy stew) or groundnut soup. Eaten by hand, tuo zaafi is a communal dish that brings people together, reflecting the warmth and hospitality of northern Ghana. Its rustic preparation and bold flavors highlight the region’s reliance on grains and local produce.

10. Wasawasa

Wasawasa is a unique dish made from steamed yam flour, often enjoyed in northern Ghana. Similar in texture to couscous, it’s prepared by steaming coarsely ground yam flour until light and fluffy, then paired with spicy pepper sauce, fried fish, or stew. Wasawasa’s distinct grainy texture and versatility make it a standout, often garnished with shea butter or vegetables for extra flavor. It represents Ghana’s ability to create diverse dishes from staple crops, tying communities to their land and traditions.

IET-GH President urges Mahama to take decisive action against galamsey kingpins

President of Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana, Engr Henry Kwadwo Boateng President of Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana, Engr Henry Kwadwo Boateng

The President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH), Engr. Henry Kwadwo Boateng, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to demonstrate stronger commitment in addressing the issue of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey—particularly by taking action against the powerful individuals often described as “galamsey kingpins.”

Speaking at a press conference organised by the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey on June 20, 2025, Engr. Boateng expressed concern over the continued activities of individuals believed to be at the heart of illegal mining operations, despite the damaging impact on the environment and public health.

He urged political leaders, including President Mahama, to ensure that these influential figures are not allowed to operate above the law.

“Are these the same individuals funding political parties?” Engr. Boateng asked. “If not, what makes it so difficult to arrest them and put an end to this environmental destruction?”

His remarks reflect growing public concern over the perceived ineffectiveness of efforts to combat illegal mining, particularly in cases involving high-profile individuals.

He emphasised the need for renewed political will to enforce existing environmental laws without fear or favour.

Illegal mining has severely affected many parts of Ghana—polluting water bodies, degrading farmlands, and threatening biodiversity.

Although various governments have launched initiatives to curb the menace, challenges remain—largely due to the influence of well-connected individuals and alleged political interference.

Engr. Boateng’s comments form part of a broader call by civil society groups and environmental advocates for stronger, more transparent leadership in the fight against illegal mining.

He encouraged collaborative efforts among stakeholders, including political parties, traditional leaders, and regulatory agencies, to ensure that those responsible for illegal mining activities are held accountable and that sustainable practices are promoted.

Ashigbey replies Chinese Ambassador over ‘galamsey’ comment

0

Dr Ken Ashigbey, the CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, has swiftly responded to recent controversial remarks made by the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, regarding the illegal mining (galamsey) menace.

While the Ambassador suggested that Ghanaians are primarily to blame for facilitating illegal mining and that the practice might be impossible to eliminate, Dr Ashigbey, a strong anti-galamsey advocate, emphasised the need for accountability and collective action, cautioning against absolving foreign enablers in an interview on Joy FM on Friday, June 20.

“He [Chinese Ambassador] cannot run away from the fact that there are some Chinese individuals who are part of the illegality that is happening who would not even dare think about some of the things that you know they are doing in Ghana in China, and so there’s a role that he [Chinese Ambassador] has to play as we [Ghanaians] also have to play,” he stated.

He added, “Let me disappoint him. His Excellency, the President, the Minister for Lands and Natural resources and the IGP are bent on definitely winning the war against illegal mining and irresponsible mining, in which some of his kinsmen are sometimes complicit and involved; you will find out that if you look at the Operation Vangard data from all those days, the majority of the foreigners who are arrested are Chinese people.”

Ambassador Tong Defa, speaking at a media interaction in Accra on Thursday, June 19, argued that Chinese nationals involved in illegal mining are often migrant workers brought in by Ghanaians.

He stated, “I don’t understand why when people say ‘galamsey’, they equate it to Chinese,” he stressed.

“Actually, it is not Chinese. It didn’t originate from China. Chinese nationals cannot obtain licences or get permits. It is the Ghanaian people who throw the Chinese people over here.”

The Ambassador also asserted, “To my understanding, in this country, you can never eliminate those small mines. Those mines, you will have illegalities involved in them,” suggesting that policy efforts should focus on managing environmental pollution rather than outright eradication.

According to data from the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry, as of 2023, hundreds of Chinese nationals have been arrested and repatriated for illegal mining activities in Ghana over the past decade.

Among the culprits is galamsey kingpin En Huang, also known as Aisha Huang, jailed for four-and-a-half years in 2023 for engaging in illegal mining by the Accra High Court.

The jail term was in respect of offences she committed between 2015 and 2017 before she was first deported in 2018 following the Attorney-General’s decision to discontinue the case.

“Aisha Huang abused our (Ghana’s) kind hospitality extended to her during her initial trial stage when a nolle prosequi was filed and she was deported.

“She did not rest; she came back with a new personality, a different name and date of birth and carried on her illegal activities with impunity,” were the words of the judge, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, prior to slapping Huang with the custodial sentence and a GH¢48,000 fine.

Critics of the Ambassador’s comments argue that while local complicity is undeniable, downplaying the role of foreign nationals could hinder efforts to curb the environmental devastation caused by galamsey, which has led to the pollution of over 60% of Ghana’s water bodies and extensive land degradation in major mining regions.

Kokui Selormey urges parents to discover and develop each child’s strengths

Renowned vocalist and broadcaster Kokui Selormey Renowned vocalist and broadcaster Kokui Selormey

Renowned vocalist and broadcaster Kokui Selormey has advised parents to avoid comparing their children and instead focus on identifying and nurturing the unique strengths each one possesses.

Speaking at A Convergence of Mothers, a forum held in Accra and hosted by media personality MzGee, Kokui — a mother of four — shared insights on what she described as one of the most important lessons in parenting: understanding that every child is different, and that’s okay.

“Sometimes our children are the problem too,” she stated candidly. “Some are more brilliant than others, some are quicker to understand, some have a worse temper than others — and that’s okay.”

According to her, parenting becomes more effective and fulfilling when guardians stop applying a one-size-fits-all approach and instead observe and support their children based on their individual personalities and gifts.

“I’ve had to learn that sometimes being able to identify each child’s unique gift is the foundation for empowering them and helping them to build confidence,” she said. “It can be something small. Even if it’s, ‘I’m the best at cleaning the table,’ that’s a start.”

Kokui believes confidence is often born from recognition. By acknowledging what a child is good at — whether it’s organizing, storytelling, drawing, or simply being kind — parents create a platform on which self-worth and purpose can be built.

“Everyone has a unique gift, but we may not always discover it at an early age. For some, it takes time,” she noted. “As parents, let’s encourage ourselves to find and celebrate it.”

She also cautioned against the common parenting practice of comparison, where one child is constantly measured against another — whether within the family or outside of it.

“That can do more harm than good,” she said. “Let’s empower, not diminish.”

The event, themed “Yesterday’s Daughters, Today’s Mothers,” brought together mothers from diverse backgrounds to share lived experiences and reflect on raising children in an increasingly complex world.

Kokui’s message resonated with many in the audience, especially in a society where academic success and obedience often overshadow emotional intelligence, creative talent, or individuality.

Her advice to fellow parents was simple but profound: “Look closely. Celebrate the small wins. If your child finds pride in something — even if you think it’s small — meet them there. From that seed, confidence can grow.”

Married man dies of heart attack after side chick allegedly mocks his manhood, sleeps with his nephew

0

A young woman has sought refuge in a church after her affair with a married man took a tragic and mysterious turn.

According to the lady, identified only as Mona, she met a man who proposed love to her and claimed he was not married.

Speaking on the Secret TV Series hosted by Pastor Elijah Prince Osei, Mona revealed that the man later changed his story after she had moved in with him.

“He told me he wasn’t married but after a few months of staying with him, he asked me to leave, saying his wife and children were returning to the house.”

Mona added that the man had promised to rent a place for her and establish a shop for her as compensation for the sudden change, but he failed to fulfill any of those promises.

In a bid to “teach him a lesson,” Mona said she seduced the man’s nephew, who was also living in the house.

She recorded their intimate encounter and deliberately sent the footage to the man, along with disparaging comments about his sexual performance.

“I told him he had a small manhood and that he was not good in bed unlike his nephew,” she confessed.

Shortly after receiving the explicit video and the insulting remarks, the man reportedly died of a heart attack. Mona claims that since then, she has been haunted by disturbing dreams of the deceased man.

“What scares me most is that his nephew also died mysteriously,” she told the pastor.

“I keep seeing him in my dream, I feel like he is haunting me.”

Now gripped with fear and remorse, Mona has turned to the church for spiritual help and protection.

Government reaffirms support for local textile, garment industry

0

The assurance came during a working visit by the Deputy Minister on Thursday, June 19, 2025 The assurance came during a working visit by the Deputy Minister on Thursday, June 19, 2025

The Deputy Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Sampson Ahi has reiterated the government’s strong commitment to supporting Ghana’s textile and garment industry as a key driver of job creation and economic transformation.

This assurance came during a working visit by the Deputy Minister on Thursday, June 19, 2025, to the Ajabeng textiles and garment enclave in Accra.

The visit formed part of efforts to familiarize himself with the operations of companies within the enclave and to explore ways the government can further assist them to thrive under strategic policies such as the 24-hour economy initiative.

Beginning his tour at the Dignity DTRT Textile Company, Ahi was warmly received by the Chief Executive Officer, Wasantha Perera, and the Managing Director, Salma Salifu.

The company, which currently employs over 6,000 workers and exports exclusively to international brands like Fruit of the Loom and Walmart, expressed its enthusiasm for the government’s 24-hour economy initiative.

According to management, Dignity DTRT already operates in line with this agenda and is eager to expand operations if granted access to adjoining lands.

At Sleek Garment Export Ltd, owned by renowned entrepreneur Nora Bannerman, the Deputy Minister was briefed on the company’s achievements and challenges.

Known for its high-quality exports and contribution of PPE materials during the COVID-19 pandemic, the company highlighted its potential to scale up production if supported with space and modern cutting machines.

“If you make quality your hallmark, you can never go wrong,” Bannerman emphasised, adding that internship opportunities are also provided to groom the next generation of garment professionals.

Sixteen/47, owned by Nura Archer, is a vibrant company that produces uniforms for the Ghana Army and engages in occasional exports.

The company also received the Deputy Minister and shared challenges related to trade across West African borders, lamenting that it takes up to seven weeks to transport goods to Nigeria by road due to bureaucratic bottlenecks.

Management expressed hope that government intervention could ease regional trade and open up new markets.

Ahi’s tour also took him to other key players, including Global Garments and Textiles Ltd, Damaris Garments, and Nallem Clothing.

All three companies expressed appreciation for the government’s renewed focus and support, pledging to do more in employment generation if granted the necessary assistance.

At Bulluk Ghana Ltd, a firm specializing in traditional and specialized sewing, the Deputy Minister was impressed by the company’s in-house technical team that ensures machines remain operational, thereby enhancing productivity.

A common theme among all the companies visited was a united call for increased government contracts, expanded access to land, modern machinery, and enhanced support for training.

Many also advocated for inclusive employment policies, including the consideration of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), as the government rolls out its 24-hour economy initiative.

In his remarks, Ahi assured the companies that the government would explore ways to absorb the training costs of entry-level workers to reduce the burden on smaller factories.

“We recognize your role in job creation and national development, and we will work together to ensure a thriving local industry that benefits both businesses and citizens,” he said.

I’ll Say It All If Pushed—Shatta Wale Issues Explosive Warning to Dr. Osei Kwame

0

Ghanaian dancehall icon Shatta Wale has ignited a fresh wave of controversy after threatening to expose what he described as explosive secrets about renowned businessman Dr. Osei Kwame Despite, should media outlets under the Despite Group continue to speak negatively about him.

In a fiery TikTok live session, the outspoken musician fumed over recent comments made on Despite Media platforms regarding his close ally, rapper Medikal. The backlash came after a video involving Medikal and a female fan at a campus concert went viral—drawing criticism from broadcaster MC Yaa Yeboah, among others.

Shatta Wale, visibly upset, accused some media personalities of deliberately sabotaging artists’ careers and weaponizing their platforms for personal attacks.

“If anyone mistakenly goes on Peace FM or UTV and mentions my name, I will come and say things about Despite that would get me and him in trouble with the FBI,” he warned.

While refraining from directly accusing Dr. Despite of wrongdoing, Shatta Wale claimed he is in possession of sensitive information that could spark investigations if revealed. He urged the business magnate to call his media staff to order, stating that the continued targeting of his name and that of Medikal is “unfair and unnecessary.”

“This country won’t be able to handle it if I come out and say the things I know about Despite,” Shatta Wale added. “I still respect him. But enough is enough.”

The “On God” hitmaker also pointed fingers at the Ghanaian entertainment media for what he sees as selective bias, mentioning highlife artist Bisa Kdei as another victim of destructive commentary.

“Big people have advised me to let it go, but I’m tired of the hypocrisy,” he said. “If they don’t stop, I’ll speak the truth, and I don’t care what happens next.”

The development has stirred significant attention online, with fans and media watchers divided over Shatta Wale’s latest outburst. While some believe the musician is justified in defending himself and his peers, others argue that his threats cross the line and could carry legal consequences.

Neither Dr. Osei Kwame Despite nor any representative from the Despite Group of Companies has officially responded to the allegations at the time of this report.

Some Commanders Escaped. 12 Hours Later, We Struck The Chief Of Staff Of Khatam Al-Anbiya—Binder

News Hub Creator23h

According to Iran International, the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel has intensified, marked by a series of strategic military strikes launched by both nations. In a stark declaration, Shlomi Binder, the head of Israel’s Military Intelligence Directorate, disclosed that Israeli forces had recently targeted a clandestine base used by Iran’s military leadership deep in the mountainous regions. “Two days ago, we struck one of the secret headquarters of Iran’s military commanders in the mountains,” Binder confirmed on Thursday, suggesting a clear intent to dismantle Iran’s upper military echelon.Following the initial assault, intelligence reports indicated a rapid relocation of surviving Iranian commanders to avoid further casualties. However, the evasive maneuver proved futile. Binder elaborated, “Some commanders escaped to another location. Twelve hours later, we struck the chief of staff of Khatam al-Anbiya, who had fled to a mountainous area near Tehran.” This operation underscores Israel’s sustained surveillance and capability to carry out successive precision strikes against high-ranking officials even after they attempt to regroup in alternate strongholds.

These targeted attacks signify a deepening phase in the long-standing hostility between the two nations, now spilling over into direct military confrontations with unprecedented intensity. The involvement of elite units such as those linked to Khatam al-Anbiya, one of Iran’s most powerful military engineering arms, signals the high stakes of this conflict. As both sides continue to exchange blows, concerns mount over broader regional destabilization and the potential for this war to engulf neighboring countries in its widening reach.

Ghastly accident at Bortianor Bus Stop claims life of pedestrian

0

A tragic incident at the Bortianor Bus Stop on the Mallam-Kasoa highway on Friday, June 20, resulted in the death of a woman who was attempting to cross the busy road.

The accident involved a long vehicle, registered as WR 1475-13, which struck the victim as she stood at the median.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the driver of the truck swerved off the main road to avoid colliding with other vehicles that had halted to allow pedestrians to cross safely.

Unfortunately, this manoeuvre led to the truck tragically running over the woman.

“The woman didn’t see the truck coming because this road lacks adequate lighting. From Mallam junction to Kasoa, the streetlights are present but are non-functional, making it incredibly dangerous for pedestrians,” a bystander who witnessed the incident recounted during an interview with Citi News.

This accident raises serious concerns about pedestrian safety and infrastructure along one of Accra’s busiest highways.

The absence of streetlights along many roads makes pedestrians vulnerable during nighttime crossings.

Local authorities have been urged to address these safety issues and improve the conditions of the road to prevent future tragedies.

Traffic accidents in Ghana are a growing concern, with statistics showing an average of 2,000 fatalities annually and tens of thousands of injuries.

Calls for improved road safety measures, including functioning streetlights and pedestrian crossings, have intensified in light of such incidents.

As investigations into the accident continue, the focus remains on enhancing road safety to protect pedestrians and ensure that such heartbreaking events do not occur again.

‘Let the gun be put where it belongs’

National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah

The National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has announced the party’s return to Peace FM’s flagship morning show, Kokrokoo, after a prolonged boycott.

Speaking in an interview on Peace FM on June 20, 2025, Asiedu Nketiah revealed that the decision to return followed a series of discussions between the NDC leadership and the management of Despite Media.

He emphasised that the party had resolved its longstanding concerns with the station and expressed readiness to resume participation in the programme.

“Before the elections, we used to meet regularly. Everyone is aware that the NDC had issues with the Kokrokoo show, and the leadership of the NDC and Peace FM held several meetings about it,” he stated.

“So finally, we agreed that the gun should be returned to where it used to be. We want to let the public know that the issue has been resolved. Now, you know what we expect, and we also know what you want. We will send our representatives to the show, please do not choose them for us. If you have issues with anyone we bring, just report to us.”

He further urged the station’s management to ensure fairness among panelists and to maintain open communication with the party going forward.

“You have your own rules, and we understand that. If anything arises, just communicate with us so the relationship can thrive,” he added.

It may be recalled that the NDC, through its National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi, announced a boycott of Kokrokoo on May 6, 2020.

The decision was based on claims of persistent unfairness against the party on the show.

The PIAC delegation was received by the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gas, Ms. Judith Adjobah Blay, and her two deputies, Dr. Robert Lartey and Mr. Rene Nelson.

The engagement emphasized the importance of continuous partnership between PIAC and Ghana Gas to promote transparency, operational efficiency, and sustainable development in the energy industry. Both parties highlighted the need for stronger collaboration to ensure effective management of the country’s natural gas resources.

Mr. Kudzedzi commended Ghana Gas for its consistent compliance with PIAC’s oversight obligations, particularly the timely submission of reports that enhance sector accountability.

Ms. Blay, in her remarks, reaffirmed the company’s longstanding relationship with PIAC and reiterated Ghana Gas’s commitment to supporting the Committee’s oversight mandate.

The meeting offered a platform for both institutions to discuss pressing energy sector concerns and explore collaborative solutions.

The renewed commitment is expected to enhance governance and drive sustainability within Ghana’s energy landscape.

Flamengo stun Chelsea in another big Club World Cup upset

0

It took only six minutes for Chelsea’s Club World Cup campaign to be thrown into serious jeopardy on Friday.

While leading Flamengo 1-0 in the Philadelphia early-afternoon heat, the Blues were closing in on becoming the first team to book their place in the round of 16.

Plans included an extended training camp in Miami as they honed their preparations for a sustained assault on the competition’s latter stages and the £97 million first prize that would be a welcome boost to Chelsea’s balance sheet.

And then, just after the hour mark, everything changed.

The lead given to them by Pedro Neto’s well-taken 13th-minute strike evaporated as Bruno Henrique and then Danilo converted from close range to turn the game on its head before Nicolas Jackson got himself sent off for an idiotic challenge on Ayrton Lucas.

Wallace Yan added a late third to give Flamengo a win they thoroughly deserved both on and off the pitch, as a combative and dynamic display was mirrored by the passion and fury of thousands clad in red and black stripes, predominantly gathered behind the end that brought them such a second-half joy.

This was a performance that raises multiple questions about Chelsea and head coach Enzo Maresca. He started with Reece James in midfield and Cole Palmer stationed on the right flank. There was an irony to Palmer speaking about coveting his new No.10 shirt yesterday, only for Maresca to then ask the 23-year-old to vacate the corresponding central position where he is most effective.

It contributed to a disjointed display in which Palmer struggled to impose himself, amassing just 15 touches and three completed passes in the first half. Palmer ended up with 32 touches and the ignominy of an 82nd-minute substitution when Chelsea were down to 10 men and chasing the game.

“We tried to do something different in the game, for next season and the future,” Maresca said following the defeat. “Now we have one more game, we will try to win.”

But Jackson will draw more of the criticism. He was on the field for just four minutes as a second-half sub and touched the ball only once when lunging in late right in front of Salvadorian referee Iván Arcides Barton Cisneros. Jackson was sent off at Newcastle in early May in a similarly foolish act that threatened to derail their hopes of Champions League qualification. Chelsea survived without him to hit their target back then, but Liam Delap will be taking centre stage against Esperance Sportive de Tunis back at Lincoln Financial Field on Wednesday to ensure the Blues’ safe passage from Group D.

It would be speculative to look too far ahead, but the probability that Chelsea won’t top the group is now very real and, all things being equal, they could face Bayern Munich in the last-16. Such a game would represent a major early test of the team’s credentials to win a competition the club’s owners view as particularly important, not least because of the cash on offer.

On this evidence, however, Chelsea don’t look up to it. Like other managers coming to the U.S. at the end of a long season, Maresca has spoken of the need to rotate and balance trying to win with managing minutes and preparing for the 2025-26 campaign. It is a difficult balancing act, but one he must do better with. This was a wake-up call, an introduction to the tournament proper with the majority of 54,019 fans against them backing a spirited team who looked hungrier and more motivated.

There is time for that to change, of course, but things just got significantly harder for Chelsea.

Stephen Appiah, a member of the Black Stars Management Committee, has praised the performance of new players who joined the team for the Unity Cup.

According to Appiah, these players have made a positive impact and shown themselves well.

The new players’ impressive debut has given Appiah hope for the team’s future prospects. He believes that Ghana has a good chance of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Appiah expressed his confidence in Ghana’s qualification chances, saying, “The new players who came showed themselves [well]. So yeah I am very convinced that we still have four games to play but when you do the calculations, nothing tells me that we are not going to qualify.”

Ghana will reassemble in September for crucial World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Mali.

Appiah’s praise for the new players suggests that they will play a key role in the team’s qualification bid.

Prophet Fordjour said the incident shows a misunderstanding of faith Prophet Fordjour said the incident shows a misunderstanding of faith

Popular pastor Prophet Benjamin Fordjour, has added his voice to the recent news surrounding a recent boxing match in which one of the fighters wore a sticker bearing the image of the renowned preacher, Adom Kyei Duah, only to lose the bout.

Speaking passionately in an interview on Hitz FM on June 20, 2025, Prophet Fordjour said the incident shows a fundamental misunderstanding of faith.

“Faith does not respond to irresponsibility. Just because you believe in God doesn’t mean you can ignore the details of preparation and discipline,” he stressed.

He added that relying on spiritual symbols without putting in the necessary work is misguided.

“You think a sticker will give you strength to win when your real strength is in your character and preparation?” he asked.

The outspoken prophet further stated that true prayer is not just in words but in action.

“You can pray by speaking, but it’s safer to pray by living right. The life you live after the prayer is what gives God a reason to bless you,” he said.

Using football legend Cristiano Ronaldo as an example, he said, “You can’t ask Ronaldo to lay hands on you and then refuse to train like him but expect to be better. It doesn’t work that way.”

Prophet Fordjour concluded by reminding believers that Christianity is not just a spiritual calling but a cultural responsibility, urging people to balance faith with diligence and common sense.

Tipper truck driver in Cape Coast fatal crash arrested

0

The tipper truck driver who rammed into two cars and a tricycle near the West Gate of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has been picked up by the police to assist with investigations.

One person died in the afternoon of Thursday, June 19, 2025, in a motor crash, while five others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Police investigations have so far identified all victims of the accident including the deceased, 19-year-old Wilfred Awusi Ninson.

The other victims have been identified as Kofi Kum, aged 57; MAnita Ansah, 39; George Ayensu Peters, 26; Charles Ayensu Peters and Prince Anamag Baidoo, aged 27.

A statement released by the Central Regional Police Command explained that the 29-year-old suspect, Bright Essel, was driving a Donfeng tipper truck with registration number GN 5710-19 loaded with sand from Bronyibima towards DVLA junction, Cape Coast.

When he got to the UCC West Gate section of the main Cape Coast-Takoradi-Accra Highway, he veered off his lane and ran over the median, before crashing into the two cars and the tricycle.

The vehicles involved were a Nissan Sentra with registration number CR 1756-12, and a Honda CRV 4×4 with registration number CR 319-20, driven by Kum and Ansah respectively.

George Ayensu Peters rode the Apsonic motor tricycle, who together with the cars, was observing traffic from the Accra-bound section of the road to join the highway.

Unfortunately, the tipper truck emerged from nowhere and ran into them, severely damaging both cars and the tricycle.

A CCTV footage which has since gone viral corroborates the account.

Ansah, Kofi Kum, together with the rider and the three other victims were rushed to the University of Cape Coast hospital for treatment.

Unfortunately, Wilfred Awusi Ninson was pronounced dead by medical officers on arrival.

The body of the deceased has since been deposited at the hospital’s morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The rest of the victims were in stable conditions responding to treatment, the statement said.

Residents in Bono, Ahafo regions owing CWSA a total of GHS400k

The Bono and Ahafo Regional Director of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), Dr. Gustav M. Osiakwan, has assured residents of the two regions—particularly those in rural communities—of ongoing efforts to provide a consistent and adequate water supply.

Speaking in an interview with CTV and Accra FM, Dr. Osiakwan revealed that several water projects are currently underway in key areas, including Wenchi, Dormaa, and Goaso.

Upon completion, these projects are expected to serve multiple surrounding communities and significantly improve access to potable water.

“As an agency mandated to provide water and sanitation services to rural communities, we are doing our utmost to ensure that every household has access to safe and reliable water,” Dr. Osiakwan stated.

He explained that the ongoing projects include the laying of pipelines that will connect homes directly to the new water systems and urged residents to exercise patience as work progresses.

Dr. Osiakwan noted that the Community Water and Sanitation Agency currently manages most of the water systems in the Bono and Ahafo Regions, including those in Bechem, Goaso, Nkrankwanta, and Jankufa.

However, he expressed concern over a major challenge affecting the agency’s operations—non-payment of water bills.

He disclosed that residents across the two regions owe the agency a combined total of GHS 400,000, a debt that is hampering service delivery and maintenance efforts.

“We appeal to residents to honour their financial obligations. Timely payment of water bills is essential for sustaining operations and expanding access,” he added.

The CWSA says it remains committed to ensuring that every rural community in the Bono and Ahafo Regions enjoys clean and affordable water and is calling on community members to support the agency’s efforts through cooperation and responsible usage.

Ghana international Lawrence Agyekum has lauded the Black Stars technical team, led by head coach Otto Addo, for the encouragement and support extended to him since his debut earlier this year.

The Cercle Brugge midfielder received his maiden call-up to the senior national team in March 2025 during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

He made his debut at the Accra Sports Stadium, coming on as a second-half substitute for Thomas Partey in Ghana’s emphatic victory over Chad.

Agyekum credited the national team’s coaching staff for helping him integrate smoothly into the squad.

“They told me that if I ever need anything, I shouldn’t hesitate to talk to them that kind of mentality gives confidence to a new player and shows that the coaches are behind you,” he said in an interview with Joy Sports.

The 21-year-old added that the open and supportive nature of the current staff contrasts with past experiences some players face elsewhere.

“There are some coaches it’s hard as a player to reach out to… but for me, the technical staff have been good. They’ve really helped me a lot.”

You are killing me behind the scenes – Reggie Zippy breaks down over feud with ex-wife

0

Ghanaian musician Reggie Zippy has sparked fresh concern after posting a deeply emotional and profanity-laced video online, accusing his former wife, Edith Ward, of subjecting him to prolonged emotional torment following their divorce.

In the video, sighted by MyNewsGh, Reggie opened up about his battle with mental health, revealing that he is currently on daily medication to manage his condition.

“Listen to me, I’m telling you this, yeah. If anything should happen to me, I’m already battling mental health.

“If you think I’m lying, I can show you all my fing medications that I have to take every fing single day just so I can function as a normal human being,” the distraught singer declared.

Fighting back tears and frustration, Reggie alleged that Edith’s actions behind the scenes are worsening his emotional state, despite the end of their marriage.

“You are killing me behind the scenes. What have I done to you? What the f*** have I done to you?” he questioned, visibly shaken.

“Is it my fault that you are so ungrateful? Is it my fault that you didn’t realise you had a good man whom you didn’t treat well?”

The musician, best known for his work as part of the duo Reggie ‘n’ Bollie, suggested that he has been consistently disrespected—even in front of their children.

“Is it my fault that you had me to yourself and disrespected me to my face, to my children—and you continue to do that?” he lamented.

“Is it my fault that you fing divorced me? Am I the only human being, or the only man you’ve ever been with? Fing leave me alone.”

Reggie, whose real name is Reginald Ainooson, also expressed frustration about the stigma he feels as a divorced man trying to move on with his life.

“What more do you want? I can’t live my life just because I’ve been divorced? Is it not men who are accused of pursuing…?” he trailed off before abruptly ending the video.

This is not the first time the artist has taken to social media to speak out about the breakdown of his marriage.

However, this latest outburst signals a more serious decline in his mental health, raising alarm bells among fans and industry colleagues.

Reggie Zippy calls out system failures after painful arrest on daughter’s baptism day

0

In a new emotional outburst making waves online, UK-based Ghanaian musician Reggie Zippy has reignited public conversations around justice, trauma, and the psychological aftermath of alleged false arrests—drawing attention not just to his feud with ex-wife Edith Ward, but to what he describes as a personal violation by the very system meant to protect him.

In a passionate video, Reggie recounts a harrowing episode in 2023, when he says he was wrongfully arrested on a day meant for celebration—his daughter’s baptism.

“Even when I took my case to the police, they still arrested me on my daughter’s fucking baptism day. And I still have to live with it,” he said, visibly shaken.

The Reggie ‘n’ Bollie star says the emotional toll of that incident lingers. And despite later receiving compensation for what he describes as an “unlawful arrest,” he claims he used that money not for personal healing, but to care for the very family at the heart of the conflict.

“When the police compensated me, you and the kids were the first people I paid money to out of my fucking police unlawful arrest payment. What more should I do?”

The video, while intense, sheds light on deeper issues: the trauma men face while navigating custody disputes, the mishandling of domestic conflicts by legal institutions, and the difficulty of healing after public humiliation.

Reggie, now in a new relationship, pleads for peace but warns that he will no longer remain silent.

“It was two years ago that I wanted to go to the police, but I let it slide. This year, it’s not going to happen. I will take my case to the police.”

He insists he has been harassed and emotionally manipulated, stating bluntly:

“You and your family and your friends are the ones fucking molesting me… Let me be the bigger person, let me forgive—but why? Every day, a new story.”

‘This is a leader who wants to take the benefit and leave his backbenchers’

A photo collage of Mahama Ayariga and Alexander Afenyo-Markin A photo collage of Mahama Ayariga and Alexander Afenyo-Markin

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, criticised the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, over what he described as hypocrisy regarding the presence of National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, in the parliamentary chamber.

Speaking during proceedings on June 20, 2025, Mahama Ayariga accused Afenyo-Markin of welcoming the NDC Chairman into the chamber, only to later report his presence to the Speaker as a breach of parliamentary conduct.

“Mr Speaker, before Asiedu Nketiah entered the chamber, the leader himself [Afenyo-Markin] rose to receive him, hugged him, and welcomed him, but you see, this is a leader who wants to take the benefit and leave his backbenchers. When his backbenchers saw the opportunity to take photographs with the National Chairman of the NDC, he became aggrieved.”

Ayariga described Asiedu Nketiah as a familiar and respected figure in Parliament, having served multiple terms as a Member of Parliament, a member of the Parliamentary Service Board, and chair of the Human Resource Committee that oversaw staffing and promotions within Parliament.

“By virtue of that, he is entitled, once in a while, to pass by and see if everything is okay in the chamber including facilities he helped procure,” he added.

He further claimed that MPs from both sides of the House were excited to see the NDC Chairman, noting that “I saw NPP Members of Parliament struggling to take photographs with him. I saw it with my naked eyes.”

The Majority Leader emphasised that it is customary for prominent party officials, including the chairmen of both the NDC and the NPP, to be allowed into the chamber, especially during ceremonial events.

His comments came in response to a complaint by Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin, who had earlier reported to the Second Deputy Speaker. Andrews Asiamah Amoako who was presiding that Johnson Asiedu Nketiah’s actions amounted to political campaigning on the floor of Parliament.

According to Afenyo-Markin, the NDC Chairman entered the chamber during a brief suspension of proceedings and took photographs with 80 NDC MPs, an act he believes was intended to project broad internal party support for Nketiah’s bid to succeed President John Dramani Mahama.

Kamaldeen Sulemana on AS Roma radar as transfer talks heat up

0

Ghanaian winger, Kamaldeen Sulemana Ghanaian winger, Kamaldeen Sulemana

Kamaldeen Sulemana could be on his way out of Southampton, with AS Roma reportedly showing strong interest in the Ghanaian winger.

Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini is said to be fond of the 23-year-old, but no formal bid has been made yet.

Meanwhile, Atalanta have already tested the waters with a bid close to twelve million euros, which Southampton turned down.

Despite relegation with the Saints, Sulemana remains a wanted man. Last season, he played 26 Premier League games, scoring once and providing an assist. With Southampton now in the Championship, Sulemana’s future is uncertain as he weighs up his next move.

He is currently on holiday, considering his options while still under contract with the Saints until 2027. Besides Roma and Atalanta, other clubs like Genoa, Torino, Ajax, and Trabzonspor are also monitoring his situation.

Southampton finished bottom of the Premier League with just 12 points, and Sulemana could seek a new challenge to stay at the top level. For now, interest is growing, but his next club is still undecided.

Peer pressure ruined my dream – Showboy reflects on regret and lost opportunities

0

Ghanaian artiste Showboy has offered fans a rare glimpse into his past, opening up about his time in the United States and the personal struggles that, in his words, derailed his future.

In a reflective post on X (formerly Twitter), the Do It composer—known for both his music and brushes with the law—recounted working low-wage jobs and losing focus due to peer pressure while pursuing higher education in the U.S.

“I was a security guard in America and also worked at the coffee shop!!! Something they will never tell you,” Showboy shared. “I was in college… And peer pressure messed my dream and all my opportunities up… So I advise you: do better and be the best version of yourself… I have regretted a lot.”

The message, though brief, struck a chord with many followers—resonating as both a confession and a cautionary tale. For an artiste often associated with braggadocio and internet feuds, the post marked a notable departure from Showboy’s usual tone, this time embracing vulnerability and reflection.

Showboy, born Sam Kwabena Safo, rose to fame as one of the co-founders of AMG Business and a close affiliate of rapper Criss Waddle. However, his career took a sharp turn in 2019 when he was convicted and sentenced in the U.S. for stabbing an associate during a brawl—an incident that landed him behind bars and temporarily halted his music trajectory.

Gold Board initiative yields $3 billion economic boost in 4 months – Kwakye Ofosu reveals

0

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister for Government Communications, has announced a significant boost to the Ghanaian economy, revealing that more than US$3 billion has been funnelled into the country within four months of the strategic Gold Board initiative.

“In the last four months, over $3 billion has entered our economy in addition to the expected inflow,” he stated during an interview on GTV.

This influx has been attributed to a targeted policy that requires all small-scale miners to sell their gold to the Gold Board, ensuring that the proceeds benefit the formal economy.

READ ALSO: Stop blaming us for galamsey; you hired them – Chinese Ambassador fires back at Ghanaians

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained that this innovative system allows the Gold Board to purchase gold in cedis, export it for dollars, and then reinvest the foreign exchange earnings back into local markets.

“This ensures that the dollars generated are allocated to vital sectors of the economy,” he stated.

A portion of the foreign currency is retained by the Bank of Ghana to bolster national reserves, while others are injected into the forex market and used to meet international obligations.

Previously, small-scale miners often exported their gold through informal channels, meaning the foreign exchange generated was not accounted for within the formal economy.

“Gold was leaving the country without being properly recorded, and the proceeds were not centralised for fair distribution,” he explained.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu contrasted the current administration’s approach with that of previous governments.

“They had eight years to stabilize the cedi but left us with unprecedented depreciation,” he remarked, highlighting that in 2022, the cedi lost approximately 54% of its value, making it one of the worst-performing currencies globally at that time.

“The Gold Board arrangement is here to stay and is not just a temporary fix,” he assured. “The President has indicated that, eventually, the cedi will stabilise within a defined range, avoiding the extreme fluctuations that have caused hardship for Ghanaians.”

When faced with assertions that similar solutions were available during the previous administration, he challenged the effectiveness of those measures, stating, “If they had viable strategies, they should have worked during their eight years in office.”

As the government continues to implement these initiatives, the positive impacts on Ghana’s economy and the stabilisation of the cedi are expected to take centre stage in discussions about the country’s financial future.

A furious commercial driver has gone viral after invoking deadly curses on a police officer he accused of unlawfully extorting GH¢150 from him at a traffic checkpoint.

In a widely circulated video on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the visibly agitated driver is seen sitting in a roadside gutter as he fervently calls upon the dreaded Ashanti deity, Antoa Nyama, to exact vengeance on the police officer.

According to the driver, he had not violated any traffic regulation and was unfairly targeted and forced to part with money without justification. He insisted that he was determined to seek spiritual justice, hence his dramatic appeal to Antoa.

“I summon you, Antoa Nyama, to appear in this gutter and waste the life of the police officer who extorted money from me,” the man is heard saying in Twi. “Let him never prosper. Take his life and add that of his wife, children, and any family member who benefits from the money.”

His emotionally charged plea included threats of public disgrace to the deity if it failed to act on his request, adding, “If you don’t kill this police officer, then everyone will know you’re powerless.”

The video has sparked a wave of reactions online, with many netizens expressing concern over both the alleged police misconduct and the severity of the driver’s invocation.

The video has reignited longstanding debates about alleged extortion by traffic officers and the desperate lengths to which some victims may go to seek justice.

Antoa Nyama is a well-known river deity in the Ashanti Region, often invoked in matters of revenge and justice. Curses involving the deity are taken seriously in many parts of the country due to the widespread belief in its spiritual potency.

As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gears up for its presidential primaries, slated for January 31, 2026, anticipation is building both within the party and across the national political landscape.

The primary will mark a pivotal moment for the NPP as it seeks to elect a flagbearer capable of steering the party into the 2028 general elections, building upon its legacy.

Already, several names have surfaced as potential contenders, sparking early conversations and strategic alignments among party faithful.

These aspirants, representing a mix of experiences, youthfulness, and political capital, are expected to engage in rigorous campaigns to win the support of delegates and grassroots members.

This GhanaWeb article explores key figures, both ‘seasoned and new,’ who have declared their intentions to lead the New Patriotic Party as flagbearer.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 flagbearer and Vice President of Ghana, reportedly announced, during the party’s recent “Thank You Tour,” his intention to once again contest for the flagbearership to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.

Dr Yaw Adutwum

The former Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has also officially declared his intention to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position.

In an interview with The 1967 News, he reflected on his journey in public service and reaffirmed his commitment to educational transformation and national development.

“As the party opens nominations for the flagbearership, I wish to contest,” he declared.

Dr Bryan Acheampong

Former Minister of Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr Bryan Acheampong, also reportedly declared his intention to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Beyond individual ambitions, the upcoming primary presents an opportunity for the NPP to showcase internal democracy, reaffirm party unity, and articulate a renewed vision for Ghana’s future.

‘They kept urging me to back down’ – South Dayi MP on holding Akufo-Addo gov’t accountable

0

Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor

Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has revealed that he was contacted several times by government officials during the Akufo-Addo administration and urged to back down because he was holding them accountable.

Citing one instance, he disclosed that he came under direct pressure after initiating legal action to challenge the procurement process of the Agenda 111 hospital project.

Speaking in an interview on Starr FM, Thursday, June 19, 2025, the Member of Parliament for South Dayi, claimed government representatives repeatedly contacted him, urging him to withdraw his suit, which he filed over what he described as irregularities in awarding a design contract to renowned architect David Adjaye for a fee of $600,000.

“We were here, and we were told that the government had given the design contract of Agenda 111 to Adjaye for $600,000 at the time they were designing the hospitals. Then we realized that they had already procured contractors to go and build the hospitals,” Dafeamekpor stated.

Concerned about a possible breach of procurement laws—particularly since the Agenda 111 initiative was being supported under a World Bank framework—Dafeamekpor took legal action to challenge the process.

“I sued, challenging the procurement process because it was a World Bank project. I think I issued the action early enough that the World Bank office picked up the matter, reviewed the writ, and saw great merit in it,” he disclosed. “I was told they advised that they couldn’t proceed until the matter was resolved.”

Despite standing on solid legal grounds, the MP said he ultimately chose not to pursue the case to its full extent, citing the potential negative consequences for his constituents and other districts in the Volta Region that were set to benefit from the Agenda 111 project.

“One [hospital project] came to my constituency. There were seven districts in the Volta Region that didn’t have district hospitals, and they were all going to benefit,” he explained. “If I persisted, these projects would stall, and my people, along with others, would lose this opportunity.”

Dafeamekpor acknowledged that although a judicial victory was likely, the practical impact might have been counterproductive.

“The monies had already been paid. Even if my declaration succeeded and the process was reversed and re-awarded, Adjaye would still likely be given the contract again. So yes, there would have been a legal win—but to what end?”

The South Dayi legislator said the situation placed him in a moral dilemma, especially during the COVID-19 crisis, when the government was under pressure to rapidly expand healthcare infrastructure.

“At that time, the projects were being rolled out as part of the response to the challenges we faced with COVID, and you don’t want to come across as the single act—just you—that threw the whole country’s infrastructure plans into disarray,” he said. “So I weighed the options and allowed my individual aspiration to give way.”

Dr. Peter Terkper declares GNAFF Presidency bid with bold vision

0

Dr. Peter Terkper

Renowned financial economist and agribusiness advocate Dr Peter Kwesi Terkper has officially announced his plans for the National President position of the Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF).

His declaration, made during a strategic meeting with the Greater Accra Regional Executives of the Association, signals a determined effort to inject modern business acumen and robust welfare systems into an industry that forms the bedrock of the economy.

Dr. Terkper’s candidacy comes at a critical juncture for Ghanaian agriculture, a sector that contributes significantly, around 20-21%, to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product and employs over 40% of its workforce, predominantly smallholder farmers and artisanal fisherfolk.

GNAFF, as a leading umbrella organisation, represents the interests of millions of these producers across Ghana’s 16 regions.

Addressing the regional executives, Dr. Terkper articulated his motivation as a profound call to duty, emphasising a personal commitment to elevate GNAFF and profoundly improve the livelihoods of its members.

His guiding principle, he stated, is to leave any position better than he found it: “When you take a decision to lead in any capacity, you must ensure you leave the position in a better shape than you found it.”

A cornerstone of his ambitious campaign is the introduction of comprehensive pension and healthcare support for Ghana’s ageing farmers and fisherfolk.

Leveraging his extensive experience as a board member of Enterprise Insurance, Dr. Terkper proposed a pioneering, tailor-made pension scheme designed to provide consistent monthly stipends and essential healthcare coverage for retired members.

He highlighted the collective power of their numbers, explaining, “After a certain age, farmers need something dependable. With our numbers, we can work towards our own pension scheme.”

Beyond welfare, Dr. Terkper champions a bold shift from traditional, labour-intensive farming practices to mechanized and technology-driven agriculture.

He stressed the urgent need to make farming not just more profitable and less arduous, but also an attractive career path for the youth and other professionals.

“The days when people had many children just to work on farms are behind us. We must embrace technology to increase output and reduce stress,” he asserted.

He actively encouraged professionals—from lawyers to doctors and civil servants—to view farming as a strategic investment, citing successful models in countries like Ivory Coast where remote farm management with agricultural officers is prevalent.

Dr. Terkper’s detailed agenda for modernizing Ghana’s agriculture sector includes a comprehensive set of policy proposals:

  • Establishing fair pricing mechanisms for farm produce to protect farmers from market volatilities.
  • Implementing robust warehouse and buffer stock systems to mitigate significant post-harvest losses, which are often estimated to be around 20-30% for various crops annually, costing Ghana billions of Cedis.
  • Introducing bill of exchange models for produce marketing to ensure timely payments and improve liquidity.
  • Creating a dedicated Farmers’ Bank to provide low-interest loans and tailored credit facilities, potentially unlocking billions of Cedis in much-needed capital for an industry often overlooked by traditional financial institutions.

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of GNAFF, Vincent Mensah, wasted no time in expressing enthusiastic support for Dr. Terkper’s candidacy, hailing him as a transformative leader possessing the integrity and vision necessary to navigate the Association’s challenges.

He has personally committed resources to reactivate and support GNAFF. We need a leader like him to reposition the Association for sustainable growth,” Mr. Mensah affirmed, urging nationwide backing for Dr. Terkper.

Currently serving as the Head of Treasury and Trade Finance for West and North Africa at Wilmar International – a global agribusiness powerhouse – Dr. Terkper brings a wealth of strategic leadership and financial acumen. His decision to contest the GNAFF national presidency has been met with considerable anticipation from various stakeholders across Ghana, who see his candidacy as a pivotal opportunity to drive meaningful and sustainable transformation within the agricultural sector.

Zebilla MP demands tough by-laws to halt rampant environmental damage

0

The Member of Parliament for Zebilla, Ebenezer Ndebilla, has called for the urgent passage and enforcement of by-laws in northern Ghana to address mounting environmental threats such as illegal logging, charcoal burning, bushfires, and unsustainable farming practices.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, June 19, the MP expressed grave concern over the region’s escalating environmental degradation, warning that these activities are driving down crop yields and worsening food insecurity.

He linked the crisis to the intensifying effects of climate change, compounded by weak regulatory oversight and poor enforcement mechanisms.

“It should be such that agroforestry is incorporated into farming activity to the extent that you don’t go killing trees to plant crops. You should especially reserve economic trees when making farmlands for production, and those that do not have economic value to our farmers can be killed.

“There should also be some kind of collaboration between traditional authorities and local assemblies to enforce some bylaws, because if there are no such laws that will prevent the cutting of trees, and then we leave everyone to do anything they want, before you realise the whole place will be empty,” he said.

A/R: Probe ‘disgraceful’ teachers’ viral fight

0

The Member of Parliament for Kumawu in the Ashanti Region, Ernest Yaw Anim, has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately investigate a viral video showing two male teachers physically fighting over a female colleague.

The incident, captured in a video that has since gone viral, took place at Pepease D/A Junior High School. The footage shows the two teachers exchanging blows inside a classroom, reportedly over relationship issues.

In an interview with Citi News on Friday, June 20,  the MP described the incident as unfortunate, shameful, and highly unprofessional. He expressed deep concern over the teachers’ conduct, especially given that the fight occurred in front of students.

“The videos went viral yesterday, and findings indicate that they were fighting over a female colleague on relationship matters. It is a very disgraceful act. I feel it is not the best for our community,” he stated.

He further stressed that the GES must take swift action to address the matter.

“As a teacher, if you can fight in front of students because of a girl, then this matter must be looked into, and action must be taken against it. I will urge that a committee be set up to invite the two teachers, and a sanction should be meted out to them. I am looking at a matter of two weeks for the issue to be dealt with,” the MP added.

GJA to roll out membership card with health benefits

Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of Ghana Journalists Association is seeking re-election Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of Ghana Journalists Association is seeking re-election

Journalists across the country will soon receive official Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) membership cards that come with tangible healthcare benefits, the President of the Association, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has announced.

The cards, he said, will allow members to access medical care at selected health facilities under a new Journalists’ Insurance Policy—part of sweeping welfare reforms he intends to deepen in a second term.

Dwumfour, who is contesting for a second and final term in the upcoming GJA elections on June 30, 2025, made these revelations on the Ekosii Sen program on Asempa FM on Friday, June 20, 2025. He is listed as number one on the ballot paper.

Running on the theme “Legacy Regime: Securing Our Achievements” and the enduring slogan #JournalistsLivesMatter, the incumbent president laid out an agenda focused on continuity, protection of press freedom, and enhanced journalist welfare.

“We are building an association that is giving hope to journalists,” he declared. “We want our members to feel safe. If you attack a journalist, you’ve attacked me—the President. And I will make sure you suffer the consequences. We will come after you.”

Highlighting his campaign values—Tested, Dedicated, Proven, and Accountable—Dwumfour emphasized that his first term was a foundation period and called on GJA members to “help finish the building.”

“All the big things we’ve done, and those we’ve started, were due to your support,” he stated, referencing projects and partnerships rolled out during his tenure. “Let’s finish what we started. Let’s protect the legacy.”

He also addressed critics who question his direct impact, urging members to consider the broader picture.

“Someone asked me what we’ve done for him directly. I told him he might not see it personally, but we’re transforming the Association. A vibrant and proactive GJA and a freer media environment—that’s what every journalist should wish for.”

The highlight of his interview was the announcement of the upcoming GJA Membership Card, which will serve more than just identification purposes.

“We have proposals from three companies, and once finalized, the card will give journalists access to medical care at selected hospitals at least once a year,” he revealed. “This will help us deal with stress and the health challenges we go through as media professionals.”

The proposed insurance initiative is expected to mark a milestone in the Association’s efforts to enhance the welfare of journalists—a vision long called for by members nationwide.

Dwumfour also reaffirmed his commitment to press freedom and journalist protection through both legal and institutional support.

“The dream of every journalist is to have a safe space,” he said. “That is what we are building—an Association that stands with its members in times of need.”

With just days to the election, he urged journalists to vote to “secure the legacy” and continue the reforms. His leadership, he stressed, is rooted in results and accountability.

“I am grateful to all journalists for their support. Still: #JournalistsLivesMatter.”

The GJA elections will be held nationwide on June 30, 2025, across all GJA-approved polling stations.

Mahama announces allocation of GHS1bn to re-tool security agencies

0

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a GHS1 billion budget allocation to retool the country’s security agencies.

According to him, this decision follows a recent Security Council meeting, where he raised concerns about the operational challenges facing the services, particularly the Fire Service and the Ghana Police Service.

“I have managed to squeeze the hand of the Minister of Finance to his back, and we will get a budget of a billion cedis for retooling of your various services,” President Mahama disclosed.

He described the situation of the Fire Service as urgent, noting that the lack of adequate fire tenders is hampering their operations.

“The Fire Service needs equipment urgently. I empathise with them when they get insulted by people when they do not get to fire incidents early. The issue is that they do not have the equipment. Some of the equipment was bought 10 years ago. There has not been a retooling,” the President explained.

Addressing the agency on Friday, June 20, he urged the public to be patient with the service, saying firefighters are working under very difficult circumstances, highlighting the risks faced by the Police Service due to insufficient resources.

“The police have to confront armed robbers every day, and you do not expect them to do it in light-skinned vehicles,” he said.

Meanwhile, Senior officers from all 11 agencies under the Ministry of the Interior have donated GHS1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as the Mahama Cares Fund, aimed at supporting individuals battling chronic diseases.

The contributing agencies include the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Prisons Service, National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), National Identification Authority (NIA), Gaming Commission, National Peace Council, Refugee Board, and the Small Arms Commission.

Judge orders Columbia student Mahmoud Khalil released on bail

0

A federal judge has ordered Columbia University graduate and activist Mahmoud Khalil to be released on bail, more than three months after he was detained.

Mr Khalil became a symbol of the Trump administration’s crackdown on universities and foreign students when US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested him in New York on March 8.

Mr Khalil was a prominent voice in Columbia’s pro-Palestinian protests last year, and his arrest sparked demonstrations in New York and Washington DC.

US District Judge Michael Farbiarz determined Mr Khalil was not a flight risk or threat to his community, and could be released during immigration proceedings, according to the BBC’s US partner CBS News.

Mr Khalil graduated from Columbia while he was in detention. His wife took his place in the ceremony and accepted his diploma on his behalf.

The government has not accused Mr Khalil of a specific crime.

He has been held by ICE under two charges.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio invoked a rarely-used portion of the Immigration and Nationality Act to argue Mr Khalil’s presence in the US could pose “potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences.”

Last week, Judge Farbiarz ruled Rubio’s justification for detaining Mr Khalil was likely unconstitutional and said the US government could not detain or deport the 30-year-old legal US resident under that reasoning.

Attorneys for the Trump administration then said Mr Khalil was being held for a different reason, failing to disclose information when he applied for lawful permanent residency in 2024.

Mr Khalil, who has been held in Louisiana since his arrest, remained in custody.

Mr Khalil’s attorneys have argued that the government is violating their client’s free speech rights. They also asked the New Jersey federal court to free him on bail or transfer him closer to his wife and baby, who was born during his detention.

Throughout Friday’s nearly two-hour hearing, Judge Farbiarz, who presides in the District of New Jersey, expressed scepticism of the government’s requests to keep Mr Khalil detained while his case moves forward.

He also said Mr Khalil’s arrest and detention on the second charge was “highly unusual”.

“It’s overwhelmingly unlikely that a lawful permanent resident would be held on the remaining charge here,” Judge Farbiarz said, according to CBS News.

He added that “there is an effort to use the immigration charge here to punish the petitioner” for his protests against Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

The ruling paves the way for Mr Khalil to be released from detention soon. Under the conditions of his release, he will not have to wear electronic monitoring and will be given a certified copy of his passport and green card so he can return from Louisiana.

The government will retain his physical passport. The court barred Mr Khalil from international travel, but he will be permitted some domestic travel to New York and Michigan, as well as New Jersey and Louisiana for court appearances and attorney visits only. He will also be permitted to travel to Washington for lobbying and legislative purposes.

“No one should fear being jailed for speaking out in this country,” said Alina Das, co-director of the Immigrant Rights Clinic at New York University School of Law, who appeared in court to argue for his release on Friday. “We are overjoyed that Mr Khalil will finally be reunited with his family while we continue to fight his case in court.”

“After more than three months we can finally breathe a sigh of relief and know that Mahmoud is on his way home to me and Deen, who never should have been separated from his father,” said Mr Khalil’s wife, Dr Noor Abdalla, in a statement released by the American Civil Liberties Union.

In a statement, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson accused Mr Khalil of engaging in “fraud and misrepresentation” and “conduct detrimental to American foreign policy interests.”

The White House also maintains that Judge Farbiarz did not have jurisdiction to order Mr Khalil’s release.

“We expect to be vindicated on appeal, and look forward to removing Khalil from the United States,” Ms Jackson said.

HASAG demands urgent talks, threatens to cripple health services

0

The Health Accounting Staff Association of Ghana (HASAG) has warned that patients will be unable to access medication at health facilities if the association goes on strike due to the absence of accounting staff to process payments and verify bills.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Friday, June 20, the National Secretary of HASAG, Setosafia Knit Fiawoyife, explained the critical role accounting staff play in the healthcare delivery system, stressing that their absence would bring services to a halt.

“If we go on strike, there will not be any accounting duties. And when there is no accounting duty, before services are rendered to you, a bill will be presented to you to go and make payment and produce a receipt before you can pick your medication. And if there is no accounting staff to do that, or the internal officer to verify whatever bill that has been given to you, service cannot be rendered to the person,” he said.

HASAG members have threatened industrial action following an eight-month delay in the conclusion of their conditions of service negotiations. Talks, which began in November 2023, have stalled due to the failure of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to respond to multiple requests to resume discussions.

The association has given the FWSC until Monday, June 23, to re-engage or face a nationwide strike.

Fiawoyife cautioned that should the Commission fail to act within the deadline, “the association will have no option but to activate industrial action.”

IFC urges banks to increase lending for sustainable buildings

0

By Francis Ntow

Accra, June 18, GNA – The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has urged banks in Ghana to expand their lending portfolios to support sustainable building projects, embarked on by both government and the private sector, to boost the country’s carbon emissions reduction efforts.

Mr Kyle Kelhofer, the Senior Country Manager for IFC Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, said financing sustainable construction projects offered environmental benefits and profitable returns on investment for the banks.

In an exclusive interview with the Ghana News Agency at the end of a certification programme for some members of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS) in Accra, he said that would contribute greatly to mitigating climate change.

Buildings and residences account for 40 per cent of global emissions, a situation that Mr Kelhofer described as an opportunity for Ghana’s banking sector to contribute to climate change mitigation while expanding their business operations into the growing market segment.

“Green buildings do not only improve environmental outcomes but also save your bottom line today and will really save your bottom line going forward, making loan repayments more secure,” he said.

Mr Kelhofer, therefore, encouraged all banks and other financial institutions to design loan products for environmentally conscious building projects across the country.

The Corporation, he said, was providing training and capacity-building programmes to help financial institutions understand the business case for sustainable building projects.

He cited the Corporation’s support to the development of the world’s third-largest rooftop solar installation at LMI Holdings in Ghana as an example of their commitment to sustainable infrastructure investments.

Mr Kofi Obeng-Ayirebi, the President, GhIS, said every material emitted a certain amount of energy. And we are all seeking the will to reduce the level of energy or carbon that the material building emits into the society.

Though green buildings might be expensive, they provided long-term benefits to individuals, businesses and the environment at large, he said, urging people to prioritise ventilated buildings over fully-glass designed ones.

Mr Obeng-Ayirebi urged the participants to implement the outcomes of the training as professionals to support the country’s aspiration of reducing carbon emissions and having a sustainable environment.

He pledged GhIS’ continuous advocacy towards enhancing policies and educating the public on the benefits of green buildings, including water and energy conservation, minimised waste and pollution, as well as improved indoor air quality and occupants’ health.

The Designing for Greater Efficiency (DfGE) certificate programme provided practical tools to help building professionals measure and reduce energy, water, and materials used in construction.

The IFC programme, with support from the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), formed part of efforts in promoting better design choices that are both environmentally responsible and financially sound in Ghana.

Mr Kwesi Asante, a beneficiary, said the training had been impactful as he had started implementing some of the learnings in his everyday life, including taking conscious actions to reduce water wastage.

He said the knowledge gained would also help in incorporating green considerations into building valuations and advised individuals, households and businesses to construct green buildings.

China does not condone illegal activities of its citizens – Ambassador

By James Amoh Junior, GNA

Accra, June 20, GNA – Mr Tong Defa, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, says Beijing does not condone the illegal activities of its citizens anywhere in the world, including Ghana.

He said the Chinese government, therefore, supported Ghana’s efforts to curb illegal mining (galamsey) and to punish offenders accordingly.

Responding to a question at a media briefing in Accra, Thursday, on the deportation of Chinese nationals arrested for illegal mining, Ambassador Tong emphasised Beijing’s zero-tolerance policy and noted that China had instituted stringent measures to deter its nationals from engaging in such acts.

“The Chinese government discourages our citizens from taking part in any illegal activities, not only in Ghana but in any country around the world,” he said.

“We have strict rules. Anyone involved in illegal mining will not be issued a passport and will not be allowed to return to Ghana. They will also face punishment under Chinese law.”

He, however, said it was unjust to blame illegal mining solely on Chinese nationals, pointing out that galamsey predated their involvement and often occurred with the complicity of Ghanaian hosts.

“Several foreign nationals are involved in galamsey. It is unfair to synonymise it with Chinese,” he stated.

Ambassador Tong urged the Ghanaian media to report the issue factually and objectively to foster long-term solutions.

He said Chinese law enforcement continued to collaborate with Ghanaian authorities to repatriate illegal miners and ensure they did not re-enter the country.

Deportation, he explained, had proven to be a more effective bilateral arrangement, as some offenders were likely to escape while on bail when being prosecuted.

He called for a more holistic approach to small-scale mining regulation, noting that millions of Ghanaians depended on the sector.

“We need a long-term policy that balances economic livelihoods with environmental protection. I don’t believe small-scale mining can be eliminated entirely, but it can be better regulated,” he added.

According to the Ambassador, a sustainable solution requires collaboration among government, local authorities, mining communities and international partners.

He underscored the positive contributions of legally operating Chinese businesses, such as Chifeng Gold in the Western Region, which he described as a model of responsible investment.

“They only have five Chinese managers; the rest of the workforce is Ghanaian. They also support farmers by planting oil palm and employing over 400 locals,” he said.

He also praised KEDA Ceramics, a Chinese-owned factory, for employing over 4,000 Ghanaians directly and benefitting about 15,000 people through its supply chain.

“It was even recognised with a Ghanaian business award this year,” he added.

Ambassador Tong appealed to the media to also highlight such success stories to reflect the full scope of Ghana–China relations.

“Our relationship is driven by solidarity. The Chinese Embassy is always ready to work together on solutions that benefit both countries.

“The media can play a powerful role in helping us tell the full story,” he urged.
