Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called for the immediate release of controversial broadcaster Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah, who has reportedly been arrested by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB).
In a strongly worded statement on X, Afenyo-Markin condemned the arrest, linking it to previous actions taken against political figures.
“It started with Abronye. Now it’s Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah. The NDC Government must be tolerant! Using State Security to intimidate opponents is not good for our democracy!
Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah must be released now
Different outcomes of Anas’ cases doesn’t make our justice system inept
Martin Kpebu is a private legal practitioner
Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has brushed aside suggestions that the victory by ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas in his defamation case against former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong provides enough basis for the conclusion that Ghana’s judicial system is fraught with bias and corruption.
According to him, the differing outcomes in Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ defamation suits against Kennedy Ohene Agyapong are not indicative of an ailing Ghanaian judicial system.
In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb, on March 19, 2025, Martin Kpebu insisted such assumptions would be absurd and far-fetched, as the two cases were not the same.
“As a lawyer, it is not something that I can easily say that based on the fact that Anas won a different case in the US and lost one in Ghana we can ipso facto say that the Ghanaian court doesn’t give justice…no, we can’t just give such a blanket statement because it was not the same case that was presented in the two courts,” he stated.
While affirming his stance, Martin Kpebu also recognized the right of citizens to thoroughly examine the judiciary and register their frustrations with its performance.
“…Being a citizen, I’m also aware that generally, citizens are saying that they don’t like what the courts are doing etc and that is reflected in Afrobarometer surveys.
“So, if you check the Afrobarometer report, on public perception of corruption on systems in Ghana, the judiciary ranked among other systems in the country that is not doing too well. The judiciary ranked 5th on the list with a percentage of 44% by most respondents and 47% by some respondents. So, you will see that the judiciary hasn’t been doing well and it is not the judiciary only. Ghana Police Service is also complicit in it and other institutions,” the legal expert added.
Anas Aremeyaw Anas filed separate defamation cases against Kennedy Agyapong in Ghana and the United States of America.
In the Ghana case, Justice Eric Baah in a decision dated March 15, 2023 dismissed Anas’ reliefs on grounds that Kennedy Agyapong’s “statement was substantially factual, and therefore, justified.”
He opined that the comments “could not have succeeded in actually defaming the plaintiff. Some of the long list of words made by defendant and tendered as exhibit C were capable of defamatory meanings, but none was proven to have actually defamed the plaintiff.”
On the other hand, the United States of America (USA) case was centered on defamatory statements made by Kennedy Agyapong after the release of the BBC’s investigative documentary, ‘Betraying the Game’, on October 28, 2018.
Martin Kpebu further explained that the move by Anas Aremeyaw Anas to quash the earlier ruling in the Supreme Court received fair treatment to some extent, given that out of the five judges who sat on the case, two ruled in favour of him.
“Anas filed in the Supreme Court to quash it because the judge called Anas’ work journalistic terrorism or so, but when it went to the Supreme Court Anas didn’t fare poorly. Out of the five judges who sat on the case, three ruled against Anas and two judges in the person of Justice Issifu Omoro Tanko Amadu and Justice Yonny Kulendi ruled in his favour,” he said.
Background
A jury in the Essex County Superior Court in New Jersey on Tuesday found former Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong for Assin Central liable for defamation and awarded investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas $18 million in damages.
Reacting to the judgement, the investigative journalist said the court ruling is a powerful message to Ghanaian politicians that the media cannot be taken for granted.

2025 Budget Is For ‘Chop-Chop’ – Nitiwul
Dominic Nitiwul
Former Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has described the 2025 budget as a “chop-chop” scheme designed by the government.
He expressed concerns over the government’s expenditure priorities, particularly the allocation of GH¢3.7 billion to General Government Services without clear details on how the funds will be utilised.
Taking his turn on the budget debate, Mr. Nitiwul argued that critical ministries, such as the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment, the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment, and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, have been starved of capital expenditure (CapEx), leaving them with no funds to undertake developmental projects.
“Mr. Speaker, how will the government explain to the people of Ghana that the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment has zero allocation for capital expenditure? The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has no CapEx, yet they have promised to rehabilitate key sports facilities such as Baba Yara Sports Stadium and Accra Sports Stadium. Where is the money coming from?” he quizzed.
Mr. Nitiwul further accused the government of misplacing priorities by allocating huge sums to judgment debt payments and land compensation under capital expenditure.
He questioned why judgment debts were given GH¢661 million under CapEx when such allocations should be meant for infrastructure development.
“Mr. Speaker, how can judgment debt have CapEx? What are they going to build with judgment debt? Land compensation has been given GH¢200 million under CapEx. What are they constructing with land compensation?” he lamented.
He warned that similar budgetary misallocations in the past led to financial scandals, referencing the infamous Woyome judgment debt case.
Mr. Nitiwul, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bimbilla, called on the government to redirect funds from ambiguous allocations towards essential development projects like Agenda 111, which has not been given sufficient funding.
“Why are you starving ministries that are supposed to create jobs and empower the youth while prioritising CapEx for judgment debt? Mr. Speaker, the Finance Minister must go back to Cabinet and reallocate the GH¢400 million from these questionable expenditures to sectors that will benefit Ghanaians,” he stated.
He also challenged the Finance Minister to provide a detailed breakdown of the GH¢3.7 billion allocated to General Government Services, insisting that Parliament should not approve the budget without transparency on how the money will be spent.
“Ghanaians deserve transparency and accountability in this budget. We must not allow wasteful spending while essential ministries are left without resources,” he emphasised.
“Last year, we insisted that the government explain its allocations under General Government Services, and we must do the same this year. If the Finance Minister does not provide a detailed breakdown of this GH¢3.7 billion, Parliament must reject the budget,” Nitiwul asserted.

Expanding access should not lower standards – Education expert cautions
Education administrator Ewurama Bennin has raised concerns about the unintended consequences of certain educational reforms designed to expand access to schools.
Speaking at the ‘Achimota Speaks’ event on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, Bennin emphasized the need to balance accessibility with academic integrity, cautioning that excessive alterations in the name of inclusion could compromise both student morale and educational standards.
Bennin advocated for a merit-based system that ensures students who excel academically are placed in schools that match their capabilities.
She also stressed the importance of targeted support for students who lack foundational skills, rather than placing them in demanding academic environments without adequate preparation.
She argued that mismatched placements could erode students’ confidence and hinder their academic progress.
Frequent modifications to grading and placement criteria, she warned, risk disadvantaging certain student groups and undermining overall educational effectiveness.
“The more we tinker with education and play with the results in the name of trying to make it accessible to those who do not have access, we actually cut some of them out,” Bennin stated.
She urged policymakers to prioritize fairness and consistency in the education system, maintaining clear standards while offering structured support to students who need it.
“The first thing I would say is that stop tinkering with the results, and let it be according to those who have done well,” she asserted.
“For those who have done well, they should have the opportunity to go to the schools they want. And for those who need help, we should provide the help they need. It’s not possible to send a child who doesn’t have the foundation into a Category A school to go and learn under teachers who don’t have the specialized skills to raise children who don’t have the foundation. What you actually do is, you break their morale in the classrooms. I want to see a merit-based system,” she emphasized.
Bennin’s remarks have sparked discussions on the best ways to balance inclusivity with maintaining high academic standards, ensuring that students are placed in environments where they can thrive.

NPP’s Kodua Frimpong Condemns Arrest of Journalist Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah
Kodua Frimpong, General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has condemned the arrest of Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah, a vocal journalist, by national security operatives. This statement came after Okatakyie Afrifa was taken into custody, sparking widespread outrage and calls for his release.
Madina District Court remands suspect in Ahmed Suale’s murder
The Madina District Court has remanded in police custody, the 35-year-old businessman arrested in connection with the murder of investigative journalist, Ahmed Hussein Divela Suale.
Daniel Koranteng, aka Nana Amakye, has been provisionally charged with murder at the court where committal proceedings are expected to take place.
The prosecutors are accusing him of causing the death of the investigative journalist on January 16, 2019, by unlawful harm.
Request for bail
Counsel for the accused, Kofi Essel, prayed the court to grant his client bail, saying the case lacked substantial proof to justify the charge. However, the court declined since it did not have jurisdiction to grant the accused hearing.
Before adjourning the matter to April 1, 2025, the court, presided over by Suzzy Nyakotey, asked the prosecution whether the sale of photographs alone could provide sufficient grounds to charge someone with murder.
The prosecutors said investigations were still ongoing.
Prosecution’s facts
Per the facts of the case, the petitioner, Ibrahim Kamir Tahidu, is a relative of the deceased, Ahmed Hussein Suale, while the accused, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, is the managing director of ISPY Company.
The prosecution stated that both Ahmed Suale and the accused were employees of Tiger Eye company, led by Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
The accused, the prosecution also said, had multiple interactions with the deceased and his family before his death.
Per the charge sheet, tensions escalated in June 2018 when Kennedy Agyapong broadcasted images of Ahmed Suale on Net2 TV, calling for retribution against the investigative journalist.
It added that the deceased, Ahmed Suale, later identified the accused as the person who provided Mr Agyapong with his photographs.
“On January 16, 2019, following the publication of the deceased’s images, Ahmed Suale was shot and killed at Madina.
“Call records placed the accused at Madina near Suale’s residence before and at the time of the murder,” the prosecution said.
Travel
It added that further analysis showed that later that same day, the accused travelled from Madina to his residence at Amasaman late in the evening at about 23:15 hours, after the murder.
“During the investigation, the accused declined multiple police invitations and later fled to the United Kingdom somewhere in August 2019.
“The accused later returned to Ghana and intelligence led to his arrest at Amasaman on March 15, 2025.
“He admitted knowing the deceased, visiting Kennedy Agyapong and having taken photographs with the deceased, but denied selling the photographs to anyone,” the prosecution told the court, adding that investigations are still ongoing.
Ghana is open for business: New dawn for investment, economic prosperity
Ghana is at an important moment in its economic journey, on a reset borne out of a vibrant and visionary leadership, and a renewed hope.
The country is once again open to becoming the premier destination for both local and foreign investors in Africa.
With a focus on comprehensive economic recovery, infrastructure development, and regulatory reforms, the government is firmly committed to creating a friendly business environment that fosters growth, innovation and sustainable development.
Investors in the recent past struggled with a number of challenges stemming from worsening economic conditions that saw some of them fold up and leave the country.
Persistent currency depreciation, rising inflation, and high import costs significantly increased the cost of doing business.
Frequent power outages and high utility bills further strained operations, making the business environment less attractive. Some, overwhelmed by these challenges, moved their investments out of Ghana, resulting in job losses and a slowdown in the country’s economic growth.
Recent studies also reveal that investors and the business community continue to grapple with several challenges: poorly coordinated regulations, overlapping mandates among state agencies, inefficient public services, macroeconomic instability, high tax rates, costly credit, infrastructure deficiencies and corruption, which negatively impact the investment climate.
The recent State of the Nation Address by President John Dramani Mahama and his opening remarks at the National Economic Dialogue delivered a clear and compelling message of hope to both domestic and foreign investors. Ghana is Open for Business.
With a strategic vision to reset the economy, the government is laying the groundwork for sustainable economic growth, underpinned by fiscal discipline, investment-friendly policies and a renewed commitment to infrastructure development.
Renewed leadership you can trust
President Mahama has demonstrated a commitment to accepting responsibility and leading efforts to find lasting solutions to the challenges confronting the country.
He has pledged to confront the issues and reset the economy on a trajectory of growth and prosperity.
In his first few months in office, the President has shown a strong commitment to rebuilding the economy by cutting down the size of government, managing public spending more efficiently and promoting transparency in debt management.
One of the defining features of Mahama’s leadership is his emphasis on consultative and consensus-driven governance.
The decision to convene the National Economic Dialogue to engage stakeholders in shaping the country’s economic policies highlights a leadership that values collaboration.
This approach signals to investors that economic decisions will be informed by broad-based stakeholder input.
The renewed fight against corruption demonstrated in efforts to investigate and recover misapplied public funds, along with reforms in public procurement and state asset disposal, demonstrates a zero-tolerance approach to corruption.
This commitment to ethical governance indicates that Ghana’s business environment will be governed by fairness, integrity and the rule of law.
Resetting fundamentals
President Mahama’s administration is showing leadership in tackling the economic crisis by running a lean government, cutting wasteful spending and reducing the budget deficit.
Ghana is addressing its unsustainable debt burden through prudent restructuring and repayment measures to restore investor confidence. Key steps include a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Official Creditor Committee (OCC) to restructure external debt, rebuilding Sinking Funds, lowering treasury bill rates, and enhancing debt repayment transparency.
Also, the Bank of Ghana plans to introduce a new foreign exchange law to strengthen the banking sector.
Ghana’s financial sector reforms, including the implementation of the Debt Exchange Programme and the Informal Sector Pension Inclusion Initiative, are designed to promote financial stability and increase participation in savings schemes.
The establishment of the Women’s Development Bank will provide low-interest loans and tailored financial services to support women-led businesses.
The Adwumawura Programme will create, track and mentor businesses annually, with a special focus on youth entrepreneurship.
The government also plans to streamline taxes, widen the tax net, and reform tax waivers to boost revenue, promote business growth and support economic recovery.
Strategic policies
The 24-hour economy strategy proposed by President Mahama is a deliberate policy intervention aimed at encouraging businesses and companies in Ghana to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The initiative seeks to create sustainable jobs, boost productivity and enhance the competitiveness of local businesses.
It is anchored on the broader vision of transforming Ghana into an import-substitution and export-led economy, with a focus on modernising agriculture, promoting agro-processing and supporting the private sector.
The policy targets key industries such as agro-processing, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, construction, digital startups, financial services, and select public institutions such as ports, customs and the passport office.
The 24-hour economy presents significant benefits for both local and foreign investors.
Participating businesses will enjoy tax incentives to lower operational costs, along with access to cheaper and more reliable electricity through a Time of Use (TOU) tariff system, which offers reduced rates during off-peak hours.
Also, the government will provide financing support to strategic agro-processing and manufacturing companies to boost production capacity for import substitution and exports.
The policy also prioritises security improvements and infrastructure development in commercial districts to create a safe and conducive environment for round-the-clock business operations.
The GIPC Act, 2012 (Act 865) will be amended to introduce strategic incentives designed to attract and support investors seeking to leverage opportunities under the 24-hour economy initiative.
Another important aspect of Ghana’s strategy of attracting foreign investments is the government’s Policy on Economic Diplomacy.
The government has outlined a new blueprint within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote economic diplomacy, with a primary focus on export diversification, foreign investment, and job creation.
As part of this, Passport application centres will be expanded nationwide to reduce processing times to seven days, in alignment with the vision of the 24-hour economy.
Ghana is taking bold steps to attract investments across key sectors by creating a more business-friendly environment and unlocking new opportunities.
The US$10 billion ‘Big Push’ infrastructure programme is set to transform the country’s roads, railways, and energy systems.
Energy
In the energy sector, the government is introducing reforms such as the Renewable Energy and Green Transition Fund to promote solar power and electric vehicle infrastructure, while efforts to achieve 100 per cent gas utilisation for power generation create new opportunities for clean energy investors.
Within the petroleum and mining sectors, the government is engaging investors to revitalise upstream oil production, and is introducing the Gold Board to regulate small and medium-scale mining.
These policies, coupled with a renewed focus on public-private partnerships and regional trade under Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), are positioning Ghana as an attractive destination for long-term investment.

We won’t allow any agenda to push King Promise for ‘Artiste of the Year’ over King Paluta
King Promise (L) and King Paluta (R)
Entertainment pundit, Nana Frimpong Ziega, has expressed discontent over what he describes as an unfair agenda by Charterhouse to sabotage King Paluta in his quest to win the ‘Artiste of the Year’ at the forthcoming 2025 TGMAs.
According to Nana Ziega, the awards scheme currently seems to favour King Promise for the ‘Artiste of the Year’ title, while undermining King Paluta’s chances, by excluding his hit song ‘Makoma’ from key nominations.
Speaking during a discussion on NEAT FM, Nana Ziega emphasised that he and others from King Paluta’s camp will not tolerate any bias in the ‘Artiste of the Year’ category.
He questioned the fairness of the awards and stated that there is an attempt to sideline artistes who are not based in Accra.
“The agenda to push King Promise for Artiste of the Year at the TGMA will not succeed. We will not accept the notion that one must live in Accra to be eligible for the Artiste of the Year award.
“This is a Ghana Music Awards event organised under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture,” Nana Ziega stated.
King Paluta’s ‘Makoma,’ which gained significant airplay and was even used by major political figures during the election period, was expected to receive nominations at the forthcoming Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
However, it was omitted from the four categories it was filed for.

National ID system yet to realize full potential
Ghana’s National Identification System, popularly known as the Ghana Card, a digital public infrastructure (DPI) established to serve as the cornerstone to create a robust national database capable of driving digitalization, yet to realize its full potential seven years on.
Since its inception, the system has achieved significant milestones, but some structural challenges have hindered its multifunctionality and optimum usage.
The Ghana Card, a biometric ID card, has become a widely accepted form of identification system integrating personal data, including biometric information, a unique identification number, and other critical details. It can function as a multipurpose card. However, full synchronization of the database with different platforms for its multipurpose functionality seems to be in limbo.
Citizens still carry multiple ID cards for various services that the Ghana card could have performed upon achieving multifunctionality. For instance, Nigeria’s General Multipurpose Card (GMPC), a single card for multiple purposes, is already delivering identity verification, financial transactions, and accessing government services.
The National Identification Authority (NIA) as of October 2024, has registered about 18 million out of the 34 million population of Ghanaians and foreign residents under the Ghana Card initiative. This has laid a strong foundation for a comprehensive national database.
However, the ID system has some lapses that need attention to achieve full integration for multipurpose usage.
Former Executive Director of Africa Centre for Digital Transformation (ACDT), a digitalization policy think tank, Kwesi Atuahene, expressed that the Ghana Card is designed to be a multipurpose card, serving as a single trusted identity for various transactions, including banking, voter registration, SIM card registration, and even as an e-passport. However, integration and some technical operational issues remain an impediment.
Mr. Atuahene further mentioned that the Ghana Card is not progressive in design, and poses a challenge to its integration for passport processing and other recurrent database systems. He argued that while the Ghana Card serves as a foundational digital identity tool, its effectiveness relies heavily on the timeliness and accuracy of the data it holds. However, the data captured during the initial issuance of the Ghana Card in 2018/2019 has not been updated for most people after six years.
Healthcare Sector
Whilst the ID system has been integrated into the healthcare delivery sector, successfully replacing the health insurance card to a large extent, the expert believes more aspects in the industry, such as replacing the same with the Lightwave Health Information Management System (LHIMS) ID card, among others, persist.
The Ghana Card is also argued to be a good database to establish special healthcare services to the aged in society, especially the marginalised or the poor.
Integrating the Ghana Card fully with healthcare systems can simplify patient identification, improve access to medical records, and ensure efficient delivery of health services.
Banking and Digital Payment
The move to integrate the Ghana Card into the banking and financial transactions system began in 2022 to enhance financial inclusion, security and convenience. However, ACDT believes the process remains incomplete, preventing users from fully accessing its additional benefits.
ACDT’s Executive Vice President, Evelyn Kwarteng, highlighted that seamless integration of the Ghana card into banking operations would facilitate government efforts to synchronise the card with all major national databases, including healthcare, tax clearance, and social services provision.
She urged the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to intensify its collaboration with the National Identification Authority (NIA) to fully integrate the Ghana Card into banking operations so that it could become an ATM card used for withdrawals, transfers, and payments.
Madam Evelyn emphasised that in an era of globalization and e-commerce, the full integration of the ID system will foster international payment services providers such as Mastercard, PayPal and Visa to partner with the central bank to ensure the Ghana Card can be used for purchases and digital transactions on online shops like Alibaba and Apple store.
“The NIA, in collaboration with the Bank of Ghana and financial institutions, should ensure that all bank accounts are linked to the Ghana Card through a secure national database. This will allow customers to perform ATM withdrawals, transfers and payments using their Ghana Card,” she stated.
This would further eliminate the burden of carrying multiple ATM cards based on the number of one’s bank accounts and enhance individual credit score credibility for accessing financial services efficiently.
Linking the Ghana Card to the banking and non-banking financial sector fully such as bank accounts and mobile money platforms can streamline transactions, enhance financial inclusion, instant loan services, and reduce fraud. It will ultimately serve as a universal ID for ATM withdrawals, transfers, and payments, as proposed by ACDT.
Business Registration
In the wake of the need to expand the tax net to generate more revenue, a combined statement issued by the National Identification Authority (NIA), Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and Registrar General Department on April 1, 2021, announced the commencement of the plans to replace the GRA Tax Identification Number (TIN) with the National Identification Authority (NIA) Personal Identification Number (PIN), known as Ghana card PIN.
This was in line with the government’s policy on the issue of a unique identifier for all transactions where the identification of an individual is required. Further, it said after April 1 to December 31, all existing TINs will be replaced with the Ghana Card PINs. The statement adds that a Self-Service portal has also been made available on the GRA website for existing taxpayers who have registered and have been issued with a Ghana card to link their Ghana card PIN to the TIN.
Thus, after the transition, the Ghana card PIN would be the sole identification for tax assessment to have a unique identifier for all transactions.
Four years later, TINs are still issued and required for business registration, whether or not one owns a Ghana Card. The NIA has successfully integrated its system for business registration, but the practicality of the efficient replacement of TIN with the Ghana Card to validate tax flow is yet to be realized.
Research Assistant at Center for Data Processing and Geo-Spatial Analysis (CEDPA), Michael Sumaila NLASIA, highlighted that the goal of tax digitization is to collect the maximum amount of revenue with minimum cost to the state. The transition from TIN to Ghana card would provide data statistics and information about the economy, for example, determining which assessable persons are and are not taxable.
“In some jurisdictions, there exist, side by side, an individual tax identification number and national identification number. For example, in the United States of America, an individual TIN is only available for certain non-residents and residents who cannot get a Social Security Number (SSN), whereas a Social Security Number is available for citizens. Thus, when you have a social security number, you do not need to have a TIN to pay tax. But, in Ghana, after the transition, the Ghana card PIN will be available for both citizens and non-citizens for tax law administration,” he said.
However, Ghana could not fully realise this target, an indication of underutilization of the full potential of the Ghana Card in business registration and transactions.
Electronic Voting
Whilst the NIA has created a robust identification data for all Ghanaians aged 18 years and above, same as the age that qualifies an individual to vote in this country, the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana is yet to capitalize on this vital biometric data for the electoral purposes.
The EC has maintained ahead of Ghana’s 2024 general election that the Ghana card remains the sole document for voter registration, therefore, anyone who made it onto the register had the Ghana Card. Thus, with this biometric database tracing voters and verifying their vote cast electronically could be done seamlessly.
The EC and the NIA must deepen collaboration to enhance the ability to use the Ghana card biometric database as a source document to advance the country’s voting system. This will also curb the challenge of rejected ballot papers due to faulty thumbprints.
Transportation
Road accidents in the country have been on the increase over the past decade with some drivers engaging in ‘hit and run’ practices. By linking the Ghana Card to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), citizens can use it for biometric verification when applying for or renewing driver’s licenses.
This can also aid in easy identification and tracking of vehicles that knock down pedestrians and run away with the assistance of the numerous CCTV cameras deployed by the police across the cities.
System Challenges
The Executive Secretary of NIA Wisdom Kwaku Deku, in his remarks about the challenges associated with the Ghana Card issuance at birth, for instance, outlined that duplication of submitted data, weak and unstable network in some parts of the country resulting in delay or inability to verify data, and slow operating system of devices used to capture data, among others remain impediment to the full deployment of the Ghana Card at all levels.
These challenges, among other unmentioned system challenges, need attention for further investment for the Ghana Card to attain full operationalization.
The Ghana Card is inevitably evolving into a multi-purpose ID card with the various linkages that have been started, however, these processes need enhancement and fast-tracking for full realization.
Way Forward
Instituting measures to regularly update data on the Ghana Card to make it progressive is very crucial. Additionally, improving data capture and card access in remote areas would be of great advantage to the integration.
Integrating health records and social security information could make the card indispensable for accessing healthcare and welfare services such as the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme that was recently defiled with ghost names.
Also, it is important to extend the Ghana Card at birth and to children registration to all health facilities, especially those in the hinterlands and private facilities as well, to create a comprehensive national database, aiding in planning and resource allocation.
The Ghana Card serves as a crucial component of Ghana’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). Thus, a network of digital systems and services that allow governments to deliver public services efficiently and securely to citizens, essentially acting as a foundational digital infrastructure for a country, enabling access to services like digital identity, payments, data sharing, and government records.

A Team Member of Afua Asantewaa Shares Photos and Videos as Evidence of Items Received From Dr Bawumia
Entertainment analyst and member of Afua Asantewaa’s team, Tilly Akua Nipaa, has responded to the singer’s recent claims regarding a lack of government support during her Guinness World Record (GWR) singing marathon attempt.
In a media interview, Tilly disputed Afua Asantewaa’s assertion that she received no governmental assistance, clarifying that the team was provided with food, financial contributions, and other essentials—particularly from the office of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
“I was instructed by Socrates Sarfo to deliver the items to the sing-a-thon venue, which I personally did. I also took photos as evidence of the donation,” Tilly stated.
Following her remarks, photos have surfaced online, seemingly supporting her claims. The images depict food packages, bottled water, and other supplies being handed over to the team. Notably, Afua Asantewaa’s husband was seen leading the team in receiving the donations.
Afua Asantewaa has consistently downplayed suggestions that she received significant state support during her record-breaking attempt. She previously stated that the only item she received from Dr. Bawumia was throat medicine to help alleviate vocal strain.
“The only thing I received from the former Vice President was medicine for my sore throat, which I have kept as a reminder of the kind gesture,” she shared.
Many fans were initially surprised by Afua’s claims, assuming she had received more substantial assistance from government officials. However, the emergence of photographic evidence and statements from her team member indicate that the situation may be more complex than previously understood.
Afua Asantewaa, a Ghanaian entrepreneur and Guinness World Record aspirant, has also refuted claims that she was gifted cars and an apartment by the previous administration. In a March 13, 2025, interview with Nana Romeo, which was shared on Instagram, she reiterated that the only support she received from a government official during her sing-a-thon attempt was medication. https://www.tiktok.com/@npp_tv/video/7482425930141404421
“We haven’t given up on you” – Mahama tells Black Stars
President John Dramani Mahama has encouraged the Black Stars players to sacrifice everything and qualify the nation to the next World Cup in 2026.
The President made the comments when visited the Black Stars’ training session at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday, March 19, 2024.
His presence and words of encouragement came at a pivotal moment as the team prepares for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Black Stars, once a powerhouse in African football, have faced a challenging period, marked by their failure to qualify for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and early exits in recent tournaments.
Addressing the team, Mahama acknowledged these struggles but remained steadfast in his belief that the squad could reclaim its former glory.
“We didn’t qualify for AFCON. But even when we did, we crashed out very early the last time. And so, we haven’t given up on you,” Mahama assured the players.
The president emphasised that the revival of the Black Stars depends on a collective effort from the players, technical staff, and management committee.
“We still believe that the Black Stars can find its glory again. And it’s dependent on you, the technical team, and the management committee,” he stressed, calling for unity and commitment.
Mahama also reminded the players of the immense support they enjoy from Ghanaians, urging them to match that passion with dedication on the field.
“The goals will come from these feet that are right here. And so, it takes sacrifice. It takes strength. We all like to watch you when you play for your clubs, and we expect that you bring some of that dedication to the national team,” he said.
The Black Stars are set to face Chad on March 21 at the Accra Sports Stadium before traveling to Morocco for their match against Madagascar on March 24.
These fixtures are critical in Ghana’s quest to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the team is leaving no stone unturned in their preparations.

The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has visited Dr. Ernest Addison, the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), following a raid on his residence at Roman Ridge, Accra allegedly by operatives of the National Security.
The Effutu MP reportedly expressed outrage over the raid and consoled Dr. Addison and his family, assuring them that he would demand answers from the government regarding the incident.
The raid, which occurred on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, was conducted by armed men, some wearing balaclavas and wielding guns.
The raid on Dr. Addison’s residence is the second such operation allegedly by the National Security on former high-ranking officials of the President Akufo-Addo administration since President John Mahama took office on January 7, 2025.
The first occurred on Monday, February 10, 2025, when armed men raided the home of Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s longest-serving Finance Minister, in Labone, Accra. That operation was captured on CCTV cameras, with footage later leaked to the public.

Ghana government pledges support for rubber industry
Dr Andy Osei Okrah, the Chief Executive Officer, Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA), has assured stakeholders within the rubber sector of government’s commitment to revamping the sector to make it more viable.
That would involve the establishment of regional and zonal offices to strengthen monitoring, supervision and technical assistance, he said.
Dr Okrah gave the assurance at an open forum for stakeholders within the rubber production value-chain as part of his tour of the Western Region.
The forum brought together various stakeholders, including the Rubber Outgrowers and Agents Association, executive members of ANRAG, farmers, processors, producers, traders, and other value chain operators.
Discussions centered on establishing a strong working relationship to enhance economic growth and efficiency of the rubber sector across the region.
Key issues raised during the meeting included shortage of raw materials, plantation produce, inadequate technical support, lack of enforcement of laws and regulations and deteriorating roads leading to plantation sites.
The two-day tour and engagement were to enable the TCDA to familiarise itself with the operations of the rubber industry in the Western Region as part of a broader effort to ensure the sector grew under improved regulation, enhanced supervision, and better collaboration among stakeholders.
Dr Okrah said the Government was aware of the challenges that confronted the rubber industry and willing to give it the needed support to make it thrive.
“We are fully aware of the challenges facing the rubber industry, particularly the scarcity of raw materials,” he said.
“The government is actively working on measures to address this issue to ensure rubber sector can operate at optimal capacity and contribute to job creation and economic growth in the region and the nation as a whole” Dr. Okrah added.
The TCDA delegation also visited the Ghana Rubber Estates Limited (GREL), which operates two factories in the region with a combined processing capacity of 20 tonnes per hour, as part of the tour.
GREL currently manages over 13,093 hectares of land dedicated to rubber cultivation, but currently operating below its installed capacity as a result of raw material shortages.
The team also made a stop at Golden Latex Products Limited, a leading producer of medical gloves for industrial usage in Africa.
Located in the Ahanta West District, the company relies heavily on rubber supply from the region to support its production.
Additionally, the delegation visited Yaeric Company Limited, one of the fastest-growing rubber processing and exporting companies in the region, and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research department responsible for coconut operations in the area, allowing the team to gain first-hand insight into their activities.

Major boost for Asante Kotoko as three key players return ahead of Basake Holy Stars clash
Asante Kotoko Sporting club have been handed a major boost as three of their key players, Justice Blay, Michael Kyei Dwamena and Mohammed Camara return for their next league game against Basake Holy Stars.
The trio were sent off on Matchday 19 following an altercation with Nsoatreman players and were given an initial three-game suspension.
However, their return is expected to strengthen Kotoko’s performance as they aim to secure a positive result in their upcoming encounter, having drawn their last two games.
The Porcupine Wariors will now shift their to their game against Basake Holy at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium after recording two straight draws against Samartex and Young Apostles. Currently, they rank second in the ongoing league with 39 points.
With 6 consecutive wins at home, Coach Prosper Ogum and his boys will hope to get back to winning ways this weekend when they welcome the newbies to Kumasi.
You cannot stand here, throw your hands around, and point at us
According to a report from GhanaWeb, the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has strongly cautioned the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, regarding his conduct in the House.
He emphasized the need for the Minority Leader to maintain decorum during parliamentary proceedings.
This response came after the Minority Leader accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of failing to deliver on numerous campaign promises made to the electorate.
However, members of the NDC caucus were displeased with both the content and manner of his statement.
Reacting to the comment, Mahama Ayariga rose to address the issue after receiving permission from the Speaker.
He stressed the importance of mutual respect among members and expressed disapproval of the way the Minority Leader had presented his concerns.
“The Minority Leader should learn to behave properly in this chamber. Please, let’s treat each other with respect. You cannot stand here, throw your hands around, and point at us while saying we don’t keep our promises,” he said.
He further pointed out that the national budget had only just been presented and had not yet gone through consideration or approval, making it premature to criticize the government’s ability to fulfill its commitments.
Ayariga urged the Minority Leader to be mindful of his approach in future parliamentary discussions.
Okatakyie Afrifa Freed After Abrupt Arrest
Media Personality and former Angel FM morning show host, Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah was yesterday evening freed after an abrupt arrest by security personnel believed to be from National Security at Achimota.
Details of the arrest are sketchy but an associate who spoke in a video on social media indicated that Okatakyie was picked up near the Kingsby Hotel at Achimota.
In the video, the yet-to-be-identified man announced the arrest of the broadcaster, who now hosts a video podcast called ‘FOR THE RECORDS’, and called for support to put pressure on the authorities to release him.
Meanwhile, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and media freedom supporters strongly condemned the arrest of Okatakyie which occurred under suspicious circumstances.
NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, called the detention an assault on press freedom and democracy.
Below is the full NPP statement
NEW PATRIOTIC PARTY CONDEMNS THE UNLAWFUL ARREST OF VETERAN JOURNALIST, OKATAKYIE AFRIFA MENSAH BY NATIONAL SECURITY OPERATIVES
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) condemns the unlawful arrest and detention by operatives of the National Security, of Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah, a veteran journalist, who has been critical of the John Mahama administration.
This unlawful action by the marauding operatives of the National Security is the latest installment of the ongoing series of state-sponsored attacks on the media by the NDC government, in their desperate attempt to silence the media and curtail press freedom.
The Party condemns in no uncertain terms this state-sponsored lawlessness and commends the many well-meaning Ghanaians who spoke loudly against this shameful conduct by the National Security. We also commend the young people and the team of lawyers who stormed the National Security Secretariat this evening to see to the release of the abducted journalist.
The NPP wishes to remind President Mahama and his government that the Ghana that was bequeathed to them on January 7, 2025, was a free country. It was the bastion of democracy, underpinned not only by the existence of functioning democratic institutions but also by our unflinching commitment to upholding press freedom as enshrined in Chapter 12 of the 1992 Constitution.
In line with this commitment, the country also went through the painstaking process of repealing the Criminal and Seditious Libel Law in 2001, a process that was spearheaded by the immediate past President, H.E Nana Addo Akufo-Addo, who was then the Attorney General of the Republic.
It is therefore completely repugnant and unacceptable for the John Mahama administration to be using State Security to intimidate political opponents as well as media personnel in a bid to silence all critical voices This, in fact, is an egregious affront to our democratic and constitutional tenets.
We call on the Ghana Journalist Association, the Media Foundation of West Africa, Civil Society Organizations, and all stakeholders to join us in demanding an immediate cessation of this tyranny and growing culture of state-sponsored attacks on the media.
Enough is enough.
…Signed…
JUSTIN KODUA FRIMPONG
GENERAL SECRETARY

Real reason I was angry with my son — Asake’s father, Malo
Mr Fatai Odunsi, also known as Malo, the father of Grammy Awards-nominated artiste Ahmed Ololade, popularly known as Asake, has finally revealed the real reason he was angry with his son.
Tribune Online reports that Malo, in a video that surfaced online a few days ago, appealed to the public for financial support to take care of his health.
Malo, who said he had been paralysed following a stroke, alleged that he had been abandoned by the artiste and had not seen him since March 2022.
He further claimed that his calls to Asake had gone unanswered.
However, in a recent development, Malo explained that his initial annoyance with his son stemmed from being unable to see him for a long period.
He added that if he had heard from him earlier, the matter would not have been made public, noting that there is mutual love between them.
He also revealed that the ‘Sungba’ crooner has sent him money and other essential items he needed.
Malo, who showered prayers on his son, further disclosed that the artiste has begun the process of acquiring a new house for him.
Speaking in his native Yoruba language in a viral video, he said, “He has done so many things for me. The reason I was angry before was because I didn’t see him at all. If I had seen him, there wouldn’t have been any problem at all. He and I like each other very much.
“He has sent me feeding money. Regarding the house he wanted to get for me, he has informed people about it and they are looking for one. I’m so grateful to him. I also thank his mother, Hajia Fatimah Dosunmu.”

Evidence was insufficient for prosecution – Tuah Yeboah
Former Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah Yeboah has shed light on the challenges encountered during the early stages of the investigation into the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.
In an interview on Channel One TV, Tuah Yeboah revealed that during his tenure, the Attorney General’s office found the available evidence insufficient to pursue charges against any suspects linked to the case.
“During our time, the police conducted investigations and submitted the docket to the AG’s office for review. After examining the docket, we realized there wasn’t enough evidence to warrant the prosecution of anyone, and we advised the police to continue with their investigation,” he explained.
Tuah Yeboah expressed cautious optimism about recent progress in the case, particularly the arraignment and remand of suspect Daniel Owusu Koranteng.
“I am happy that today they have been able to get someone who has been arraigned before a court and remanded to prison custody,” he stated.
However, he raised concerns about the strength of the evidence against the suspect, questioning, “But the question is, do they have enough evidence?”
$18m awarded against Kennedy Agyapong…in Anas defamation case
Court in New Jersey, United States of America (USA), has found Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong and one other person liable in a defamation case, and awarded $18 million against him.
Mr Anas Aremeyaw Anas, investigative journalist, and the plaintiff, filed a suit and joined Mr Agyapong, the former Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central in the Central Region, and Mr Frederick Asamoah, a social media commentator, as defendants.
These damages arose from statements Mr Agyapong made on television, following the airing of the BBC documentary on corruption, “Betraying the Game,” on October 28, 2018.
Mr Anas, sued the former lawmaker at the High Court, Accra, presided over by Justice Eric Baah, but the case was dismissed by the court, and a cost of GH¢50,000 awarded against Anas.
Anas appealed the decision at the Supreme Court on grounds of bias and lack of jurisdiction of the trial High Court, but lost by 3-2 majority decision.
The Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkonoo, Justice Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu and Asiedu upheld the ruling of the High Court, whilst Justices Emmanuel Yoni Kulendi and Yussif Amadu Tanko dissented.
Displeased by the outcome at the apex court, Anas initiated proceedings in the USA.
However, the trial in the USA, involved eight jurors, returned a unanimous verdict in favour of the plaintiff.
The court said it was of the considered view that plaintiff had been traumatised by the actions complained of in the complaint and had suffered severe emotional distress; because he had to field mortifying questions from former clients, agents, business associates, and family members, who reside all over the world including the City of West Orange in the State of New Jersey.
Mr Anas had told the court that the words complained of were utterly false, products of the first defendant’s imagination and were mischievously calculated by Mr Agyapong to disparage the plaintiff.
The plaintiff further indicated that the words created disaffection for him and brought him into odium in the eyes of right-thinking members of the society in West Orange, Newark, and other parts of the State of New Jersey and the global community.
Mr Anas asked the court to award presumed damages in the amount of $5 million; special damages in the amount of $10 million; actual damages in the amount of $5 million; and punitive damages in the amount of $10 million.
The plaintiff also asked the court for an order restraining Mr Agyapong from further making the utterances complained of; and ordering Mr Asamoah to permanently delete all defamatory statements he has published about the Anas on the worldwide web.
In a statement issued after the court’s verdict, Mr Anas noted that he felt vindicated by the outcome of the case.
He said: “I stand before you today with a profound sense of vindication and determination. Yesterday, in the Essex County Superior Court in New Jersey, an eight-member jury delivered a unanimous verdict finding Kennedy Agyapong—former member of the Ghanaian Parliament—liable for defamation and awarding damages of $18 million.”
Mr Agyapong acted both maliciously and recklessly in his attacks against me,” Mr Anas added.
Regrettably, Anas said the situation in Ghana was starkly different.
Moreover, he recounted that in 2018, when he pursued a similar lawsuit there, justice eluded him.
He mentioned that despite Mr Agyapong’s own admission of lacking evidence to support his calumnious claims, “Justice Eric Baah of the Accra High Court not only denied me justice, but unjustly portrayed me—the civil plaintiff—as a criminal.”

Towards social security resilience, business continuity
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the business continuity preparedness of many institutions. It turned business disaster management planning on its head, as it forced companies around the world to rethink their operations and, in many cases, embrace totally new models for work.
According to Tim Minahan, executive vice-president of business strategy at Citrix, “While many had begun moving toward remote work as part of their business continuity plans, few were prepared to do so at the speed and scale the pandemic required.”
The era of COVID-19 in Ghana was also the most vital for social security institutions as they were the only institutions to keep body and soul together at a time when productivity was at its lowest worldwide.
The post-covid era has taught us to prepare for a new normal business continuity and resilience in Ghana, which involves ensuring that social security systems remain operational and effective, even in the face of disruptions such as economic crises, natural disasters or pandemics.
This is crucial for safeguarding the welfare of citizens, particularly the vulnerable populations who rely on social security benefits for their livelihoods.
Five years down the line, there are still some weaknesses in business plans which will make social security institutions vulnerable to another disaster.
There are still some key strategies that need to be put in place to enhance social security business continuity and resilience in Ghana.
First of all, there is the need for the creation of Business Continuity Plans (BCP) for every social security institution that will help in strengthening the institution’s disaster management frameworks.
This must begin with a robust governance structure that establishes clear policies and governance structures to ensure accountability and transparency in social security administration, and assign duties and responsibilities to departments and individuals in the event of crises.
There must also be proper legal and regulatory reforms that help to update and enforce laws and regulations that support the sustainability and adaptability of social security systems.
These reforms must hinge on transformations that encourage institutions to invest in digital technology to modernise social security administration, including digital payment systems and data management platforms.
Social security institutions must also exhibit evidence of financial sustainability.
This means that they should be able to show diversified funding sources.
There should be a reduction of reliance on a single funding source by exploring options such as public-private partnerships, donor funding, and innovative financing mechanisms.
This means, therefore, the minimum capital requirement for embarking on social security administration.
Institutions must build and maintain a buffer of reservation or contingency funds to cushion against economic shocks or unexpected demands on the system.
Institutions should also regularly conduct actuarial valuations to assess the long-term financial health of social security schemes that use both defined contributions or defined benefit mechanisms and adjust contributions or benefits as needed.
These studies will help them to employ data-driven approaches to identify trends, predict risks, and optimise resource allocation.
Programmes
Social security institutions should also develop tailored programmes to extend coverage to informal sector workers, who make up a significant portion of Ghana’s workforce and also ensure that social security programmes address the specific needs of women, who are often disproportionately affected by economic and social vulnerabilities.
They should also explore social insurance schemes that can provide additional protection for informal sector workers and other vulnerable groups.
These measures could ensure inclusivity and coverage expansion.
The Business Continuity Plan of social security institutions should provide for training programmes that aim to equip administrators with the skills needed to manage complex systems and respond to emergencies.
They must also launch public education and awareness campaigns to educate citizens about their rights and entitlements under social security schemes.
They should also provide for collaboration with civil society organisations, trade unions, and community leaders to build trust and ensure inclusiveness.
The use of mobile technology and online platforms to streamline registration, contribution collection, and benefit distribution can also help in sustaining business continuity and financial resilience in times of crisis.
Institutions
Ghanaian social security institutions must share knowledge and learn from best practices in other countries, particularly those with successful social security systems in Africa and beyond.
These include collaboration with international organisations such as the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the World Bank, the International Social Security Association (ISSA) and International Organization of Pension Supervisors (IOPS) to access technical and financial support.
They should also align social security policies with cross-border and regional frameworks, such as those of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
To achieve social security business continuity and resilience in Ghana, a multi-faceted approach is required.
This includes strengthening institutional frameworks, ensuring financial sustainability, leveraging technology and fostering inclusivity.
By addressing these areas, Ghana can build a social security system that is not only resilient to shocks but also equitable and sustainable in the long term.
Collaboration between government, private sector, and international partners will be key to achieving these goals.

‘You are making heroes out of nobodies’ – Netizens blasts National Security over Okatakyie arrest
Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah was detained by the NIB
The National Security has become a prominent topic on social media following a raid at the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr Ernest Addison and the ‘arrest’ of broadcast journalist Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah.
On March 19, 2025, reports emerged of a raid on the Roman Ridge residence of Ernest Addison, led by 20 armed men under the command of Richard Jakpa, the Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat.
According to the reports, Dr Addison was at home when the heavily armed individuals, some wearing balaclavas and carrying AK-47 semi-automatic rifles, arrived to conduct a search.
They proceeded to disable all CCTV cameras at his residence, reportedly demanding him to lead them to the ‘vaults’ in his house.
Subsequently, the arrest of Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah has raised concerns among some netizens about the perceived rise in state-sponsored threats against press freedom.
Some critics have raised questions about the National Security’s rationale for the arrest of the media personality, while others have suggested that the actions may be justified, pointing to the potential need to address misinformation and disinformation spread by individuals.
Other critics have also suggested that misleading information spread by certain individuals against the government could pose a threat to national security, offering further support for the arrests.
National Security has also faced significant criticism for targeting individuals who are seen as inconsequential in the larger context, with critics arguing that these perceived unnecessary arrests elevate them into figures of importance.
Meanwhile, Afrifa-Mensah has been released from custody, and it has been reported that Dr. Addison is safe, although he was reportedly fuzzled by the incident.

Ghanaians will forget about AFCON, if you win the two games
President John Dramani Mahama during his engagement with Black Stars players
President John Dramani Mahama has urged the Black Stars to win back the trust of Ghanaians with their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.
The president made this remark when he paid a visit to the team during their Wednesday, March 19, training at the Accra Sports Stadium.
While addressing the players, he encouraged them to make amends for the 2025 AFCON disappointment by winning their upcoming two games.
“If you win these two games, I’m sure Ghanaians will be ready to put the disappointment of AFCON behind them and rally behind you,” he said.

Woman born fair with blond hair says she is ‘black’ and moving to Africa
A woman who was born white but says she identifies as black after having melanin injections to change the colour of her skin is planning to move to Africa. Martina, who prefers to be known as Malaika, says she feels a deep connection to the continent and its people.
Malaika, 36, has suffered severe backlash from people saying she is wearing ‘blackface’ and will “never be black”. Malaika – who naturally has very fair skin – is planning a move to Africa with her husband, Michael Groß, 38.
“We have received invitations from fans in many African countries and so it hasn’t been easy to choose,” Malaika said. “Currently, we have Kenya and Namibia on our shortlist. My husband and I had already planned to emigrate a few years ago, but then the pandemic hit.
“Since most of my modelling jobs are in Europe and the US, Michael fears it will be difficult for me to earn money in Africa. I’ve had to work hard to convince him that this is the best decision for us.”
Malaika has also undergone several lip augmentations and plans to undergo a buttock augmentation and surgery to “widen her nose” before her departure to Africa.
She said: “My husband and I are still working on the schedule. It’s especially important that I have my surgeries (buttock augmentation and nose widening) done here in Europe beforehand. Since I want my surgeries very extreme, I don’t know any surgeons in Africa who can do those.
“I am hoping that we can resolve the remaining issues soon and realise our dream of emigrating as soon as possible.”
When she visited Nairobi for the first time in 2018, the model says she was recognised by some of the local people and even had people wanting to take selfies with her. She has visited Africa three times.
Malaika said: “I want to emigrate to Africa because I feel a deep connection to the African people. The harsh criticism usually comes from the US via social media.
“People say things like ‘You’re white, you’ll never be Black’ or say my skin is ‘Blackface’. But I don’t take these comments to heart. I assume that people who have negative attitudes toward me hold back when they meet me in person.
“Though I never go walk around alone, my husband always accompanies me. Every time I’ve visited Africa though, I’ve felt at home and overwhelmed by the response.
“Once, as I got out of a taxi, a fan recognised me and a short time later, I was surrounded by a whole crowd of people wanting to take selfies with me and asking me many questions. I can’t wait to live there.”
President Mahama rallies support for Black Stars
By Iddi Yire
Accra, March 20, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has rallied Ghanaians to support the senior national football team, the Black Stars in their quest for the next World Cup Qualifier against Chad.
The President during a visit to the Black Stars at their training camp at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday evening said: “I am here on behalf of all Ghanaians as the President of the Republic to just cheer you on and encourage you”.
“Ghanaians have had their hearts broken by the fact that we didn’t qualify for the AFCON (Africa Cup of Nations), but even when we qualified for the AFCON, we crashed out very early the last time and so we haven’t given up on you.”
The President reiterated that Ghanaians still believe that the Black Stars could find its glory again and that it was dependent on players and the technical team and the management committee.
“It takes sacrifice, it takes strength. We all like to watch you when you play for your teams and we expect that you bring some of that dedication to the national team,” he stated.
“Playing for the national team is not as lucrative as playing for your individual teams, but still that sense of pride and patriotism that your nation, you know, has gone to the World Cup is something that is worth dying for.
“And so before you start the qualifiers, let’s put the AFCON debacle behind us and let’s look forward.”
He reiterated that in the World Cup qualifiers, the senior national football team was going to redeem itself.
“If we play and we qualify, Ghanaians will find it in their hearts to come fully behind the team again. And I know you can do it. I mean, you’re all talented players,” President Mahama said.
“We’re going to continue to support you, not only for the World Cup, but beyond. We think that we must build a very strong team and the way to build a strong team is to find the resources to bring you together as much as possible so that you’re playing together.”
The President underscored the need to look for young talents to join the senior national football team, so that they also could play with them and bring them up as the next generation of the stars.

“I’ll take time off and watch the game myself. Even though my heart is not very good at watching soccer, I will brave it. They say I should eat before I go and sit down. And my hope is that you will justify my sitting and watching you guys,” President Mahama said.
He noted that the whole of Ghana was going to be behind the Black Stars and that he was sure they could make it.
The President was accompanied by Mr Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister of Youth and Recreation.

National Security Raids Former BoG Governor’s Home • Afenyo-Markin Visits
Alexander Afenyo-Markin and Dr. Ernest Addison (right)
Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, Richard Jakpa, yesterday led about 20 armed men to raid the private residence of the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison.
The break-in occurred yesterday morning, at the Roman Ridge residence of Dr. Addison in Accra.
According to Asaase News, the former BoG Governor was at home when the heavily armed men, some in balaclavas, wielding AK-47 semi-automatic rifles, showed up to conduct a search.
The report indicates that when the team from National Security first arrived at the property, they immediately disabled the CCTV system.
They then demanded that Dr Addison led them to the “vaults” in his house. According to Asaase News, the former Governor, told them that he had no vaults or any such cache of cash at home.
This did not, however, deter the security personnel, who, according to eyewitnesses, went ahead to allegedly ransack the house.
No vaults were found, and no large amounts of cash were also found. After their search yielded no results, they decided to take the CCTV monitor and control unit with them.
Dr Addison, his wife, and their entire family are said to be traumatized after the raid.
“This is the first time in the history of Ghana that such a thing is happening to a Governor of the Bank of Ghana. This is both scary and messy,” Dr. Addison said.
Afenyo-Markin Visits
Meanwhile, the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin paid a visit to Dr. Addison after the incident.
The Effutu MP reportedly expressed outrage at the raid and consoled the former BoG Governor promising to seek answers from the government.
This is the second time Mr. Jakpa has led a group of armed men to raid the home of high-profile former appointees of the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration since President John Mahama was sworn into office on 7 January 2025.
Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s longest-serving finance minister, was the first such high profile person whose home in Labone, Accra, was also raided by over 15 armed men on Monday, 10 February 2025.
The raid was captured on CCTV cameras installed at the property, and the footage was subsequently released to the public.

Kennedy Agyapong Should Be the Next Person Arrested – Afia Schwarzenegger Reacts to Arrest of Suspect in Ahmed Suale Case
Afia Schwarzenegger has called for the arrest of former Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP), Kennedy Agyapong, for his role in the death of former Tiger Eye PI journalist, Ahmed Suale.
A suspect was recently arrested in connection with the tragic murder of Suale. Daniel Owusu Koranteng, a former colleague of Suale’s, is accused of selling his photos to Kennedy Agyapong.
However, Koranteng is the only one arrested in connection with the case while the popular politician goes scot-free.
Reacting to that, Afia said as far as Ghanaians know, Kennedy Agyapong is the one who exposed Suale’s identity and got him killed.
She said while Koranteng sold the photos, he did not publicize them to Ghanaians but it was Agyapong who did that therefore, he must face the consequences.

MP calls for urgent funding to tackle opioid abuse among youth
A member of the Parliamentary Committee on Health, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, is urging the government to allocate sufficient funds to combat the use of opioid drugs among the youth in the country.
He argues that this issue is taking a significant toll on the mental health of young people and must be addressed urgently.
Speaking during a debate on the 2025 budget in Parliament, on Wednesday, March 19, the Abuakwa South legislator stressed that the government’s plans to combat opioid drug use were not reflected in the budget therefore immediate action must be taken to remedy the situation.
“Mr. Speaker, the new opioid substance is what we call red. Mr. Speaker, what do you know red? It is the new opioid substance that is being abused. However, this mental health issue that was boldly stated in the manifesto of the NDC did not find expression in the national budget.
“We are all at risk. You intend to create a lot of jobs for the youth. The very youth that you intend giving opportunities to are abusing substances that there is a need for a national budget to address”.

Bro Was Making Too Much Noise – Social Media Reacts as Okatakyie Afrifa Reportedly Arrested by National Security
Former Angel Broadcasting Network on-air personality, Okatakyie Afrifa, has reportedly been picked up by national security operatives, sparking wild reactions on social media.
According to reports, Afrifa was picked up on Wednesday, March 19. He was in custody for several hours and was released later in the day following intense public backlash.
Afrifa, who currently hosts the ‘For the Records’ show on YouTube and is a staunch critic of the NDC government, was allegedly picked up due to his political views. Days before his arrest, he had claimed that he was being followed by National Security Operatives.
Following his arrest, NPP activists exploded on social media. The party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, called for his release, as did minority leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. Following the public callouts, National Security released Okatakyie and he’s currently a free man.
Netizens also had their own views on his arrest, with some calling Afrifa out for his views.
“Nobody should give him any attention—let him remain in custody for as long as possible. All he does is spew nonsense without facts,” one user wrote.

GAEC raises alarm over land encroachments
The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) has issued a strong caution to the public against encroaching on its lands.
In a March 18 press release, GAEC reported that unauthorised individuals have illegally broken barricades and begun grading large portions of land behind the Bohye Police Base Workshop and Ga-East Hospital.
The affected area has been earmarked for the construction of an Electron Beam Irradiation Facility, a project expected to support sustainable agriculture and ensure food safety by reducing post-harvest losses and sterilizing consumer products.
However, GAEC has observed a troubling increase in land encroachment, with activities now dangerously close to the National Nuclear Waste Management Centre, which stores hazardous radioactive waste.
GAEC warned that such actions pose significant safety and security risks to both the facility and surrounding communities.
“The Commission is increasingly confronted with a surge in encroachments, with activities now dangerously close to the National Nuclear Waste Management Centre. This centre houses hazardous radioactive waste, which is managed in strict compliance with the laws of Ghana and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regulations.
“These encroachments pose serious safety and security risks to both the facility and surrounding communities. Additionally, the safety of residents in the immediate catchment area is under serious threat if this security installation remains unprotected.”
GAEC emphasised Ghana’s obligation under international legal frameworks, including its commitments to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to safeguard its nuclear assets.
It warned that failure to prevent further encroachment could damage Ghana’s global reputation and affect its standing in the international nuclear community.
“Ghana currently holds the prestigious position of Chair of the Board of Governors of the IAEA, the United Nations agency responsible for promoting the peaceful use of nuclear technology worldwide. If the land encroachment issue is not addressed swiftly, it could negatively impact Ghana’s international reputation and future opportunities. Ghana’s positive reputation and good safety record in operating a research reactor for over 30 years could be eroded,” the statement added.

Trouble For Mustapha As Gyampo Instructs His Lawyers To File A Legal Suit Against Him Over This
Trouble For Mustapha As Gyampo Instructs His Lawyers To File A Legal Suit Against Him Over This
News Hub Creator2h
Prof. Ransford Gyampo, a lecturer at the University of Ghana and Secretary of the University Teachers Association (UTAG), has declared his intention to take legal action against Salam Mustapha, the National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
His decision follows Mustapha’s recent claim that Gyampo is aligned with the NDC’s agenda to disrupt academic activities through a UTAG strike. Gyampo has strongly refuted these allegations, calling them “baseless and defamatory.”
In a social media post, he expressed frustration over similar accusations he has endured over the past five years. While he previously avoided legal action against what he described as “men of straw,” he now feels compelled to act due to Mustapha’s influential position.
Gyampo stated that his lawyers are ready to proceed with the lawsuit and emphasized his commitment to seeking justice, regardless of the outcome.
He insisted that Mustapha must provide evidence to support his claims and reaffirmed his trust in the legal system. “I believe in the courts, and I am confident that justice will be served,” he said.
Encouraging his followers to share his message, Gyampo signaled his determination to hold Mustapha accountable.
This legal move adds to the ongoing political tensions in Ghana, particularly concerning the intersection of academia and political influence.

How Kennedy Agyapong Campaigned Against Me While I Was Pregnant With His Child – Adwoa Safo Speaks
According to a report from GhanaWeb, former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has disclosed that Kennedy Agyapong did not support her during the 2007 primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and instead backed Professor Mike Oquaye, even though she was expecting his child at the time.
During an interview on Movement TV on March 19, 2025, she was asked whether she would endorse Kennedy Agyapong’s bid for the NPP’s leadership.
In response, she affirmed her support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, emphasizing that her political decisions are guided by her beliefs rather than personal relationships.
She explained that during her first attempt at securing the party’s nomination, Kennedy Agyapong actively campaigned for Professor Mike Oquaye.
However, in her second term, he offered his assistance with her campaign.
When she sought re-election for a third term, he once again threw his support behind Oquaye Jnr.
“Do you know that during my first primary. Kennedy Agyapong campaigned for Professor Mike Oquaye? In 2007, he was on every platform campaigning for Professor Mike Oquaye while I was pregnant with his child. It was only in my second term that he helped me with my campaign. And in my third term, he again campaigned for Oquaye Jnr. So, I also have my preference,” she said.
She reiterated that this history underscores the idea that political choices are personal and should not be influenced by family connections.
Although he initially did not back her, she acknowledged that he later provided support in subsequent elections.
In the 2024 NPP primaries, Adwoa Safo was unsuccessful in her bid for re-election, losing to Mike Oquaye Jnr.
He later failed to retain the Dome-Kwabenya parliamentary seat for the party in the general elections, as the NDC candidate emerged victorious.

Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo calls for an end to negotiations with foreign mining companies
Former Chief Justice, Justice Sophia Akuffo, has called for the termination of deals between Ghana’s natural resource sector and foreign mining companies.
Speaking as a guest speaker during the second day of the constitution review sitting by the Constitution Review Committee in Accra, she based her assertion on the failure of natural resource stakeholders to harness the full benefits of the country’s mineral resources, instead of offering them to foreign companies to refine and return only a portion to Ghana.
