Banks Must Develop Robust Security Systems – BoG

0

Dr. Johnson Asiama (M) with some Heads and officials of Banks

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asaima, has urged banks to develop robust cyber security systems and invest significantly in the security features of banking products in order to deal with emerging fraud.

The Governor who made the call  during his maiden  meeting with heads of banks at the Bank Square in  Accra said though  the Central bank welcomes innovation in the banking sector,  banks  should  assume greater responsibility  for the safety  of their systems and  product integrity.

He said, “We must build digital resilience, we welcome digital innovation, but it must be pursued with discipline and matched by robust cyber security, operational resilience, and governance, product integrity, and customer protection”.

Dr. Asiama stressed that such robust systems would help deal with fraud as new operational and systemic risks emerge on fraud and crime due to digitalisation and financial interconnectedness.

The Governor also asked the banks to expand public financial education, alert customers swiftly on emerging fraud issues and act swiftly under cyber security directive.

Dr. Asiama also asked the banks to renew its shared commitment to a stable, inclusive, and innovative financial system that protect the most vulnerable, embraces responsible technology as well as expand access across geography and income.

He also stated that the Central bank would also focus on risk identification and mitigation systems put in place by the banks to enhance the use of data analytics and early warning indicators that will identify emerging risks in terms of asset quality, cyber security, fraud, liquidity, or systemic buildup of nonperforming loans.

The Governor, for instance, stated that the 2024 fraud Report revealed a 5% increase in fraud cases and a 13% rise in value at risk, reinforcing the urgency of stronger internal controls and oversight.

According to him, despite the shocks and challenges recorded during the financial sector clean-up and the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), the banks have been resilient regained traction to help support the country’s financial stability.

He further indicated that as the banks makes efforts to deepen reforms and reposition the financial sector for the future, it was important for the banks to reflect on how they could do more to drive Ghana’s economic transformation especially in the area of trade facilitation and regional integration.

“We expect stronger support especially from foreign-owned banks for trade finance, cross-border payment infrastructure, and platforms like PAPSS,” he said.

The Bank will engage with the sector to develop coordinated, practical solutions that improve transaction efficiency, expand export support, and enhance Ghana’s competitiveness in regional and global trade,” he noted.

Dr. Asiama added that the bank will also focus on governance and compliance,  sustainable  oversight  while  building  capacity for future challenges  recognizing the  unfamiliar risks that will be posed by  AI in finance, climate shocks, geopolitical volatility among others.

Retiree sues ex-Governor Addison, BoG over cedi depreciation

0

A Ghanaian retiree has dragged the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and its immediate past Governor, Dr Ernest Addison, to court, citing gross negligence in the management of the Ghana Cedi.

In a writ filed at the Accra High Court, the plaintiff, Balbir Violet Allan, a resident of Adabraka, avers that when the Governor assumed office in February 2017, the cedi-dollar exchange rate was GH¢4.26 to $1.

However, by February 3, this year — when the Governor proceeded on terminal leave — the rate had surged to GH¢15.49 to $1, representing a depreciation of approximately 264 per cent.

The plaintiff claims that the significant decline in the value of the cedi has caused substantial losses in the value and purchasing power of her investments in government treasuries, particularly ESLA Bonds.

In the suit, filed by lawyer for the plaintiff, John E. Baiden of The Liberty Institute Law Firm, the plaintiff argues that while the law mandated the Bank of Ghana, through its Governor, to provide the state with a stable currency, the second defendant allegedly chose to allow the value of the cedi to be determined solely by market forces, including demand and supply on the foreign exchange (forex) markets, leading to its instability and volatility.

It is the case of the plaintiff that the former Governor allegedly failed to develop or implement any credible plan consistent with the law to stabilise the currency.

As Governor, Ms Balbir said he also served as the Chairperson of the BoG’s Board and its Monetary Policy Committee, which was legally responsible for formulating and executing monetary policy measures, including efforts to stabilise the currency.

“The second defendant has so controlled and conducted the affairs of the first defendant in a manner that extensive harm has befallen the cedi, including that of the plaintiff’s, as the dictates of justice would justify the legal mandate of the 1st defendant are made coterminous with the mandate of the second defendant who is not only the Governor but

Chairperson of the first defendant’s Board and its Monetary Policy Committee,” the writ stated.

The plaintiff indicated that she formally notified the former Governor on May 30, 2024, of her intention to sue if no efforts were made to restore the cedi’s soundness and value.

However, no remedial action was taken, prompting the current legal action.

Reliefs

Ms Balbir said that unless an order to recover her losses was granted by the court, she would have no recourse for recovery or restitution of the lost value of investment capital.

She is, therefore, asking the court to lift the corporate veil shielding the Bank of Ghana and to hold both the bank and the former Governor jointly and severally liable for her investment losses.

Among other reliefs, the plaintiff is seeking a declaration that the second defendant had been grossly negligent, allegedly in the management of the Ghana Cedi through the first defendant (BoG).

Also, a declaration that the exchange rate losses she had suffered were enforceable against both defendants, jointly and severally.

Artistes who performed at Richard Nii-Armah Quaye’s party did not demand payment

Ghanaian reggae musician and radio presenter, Blakk Rasta Ghanaian reggae musician and radio presenter, Blakk Rasta

Ghanaian reggae musician and radio presenter, Blakk Rasta, has claimed that popular business mogul Richard Nii-Armah Quaye did not pay any musician who performed at his recent birthday party.

In a video shared on GHpage TV’s Instagram and monitored by Ghanaweb on April 11, 2025, Blakk Rasta revealed that Richard Nii-Armah Quaye disclosed to him that artistes such as Diamond Platnumz, Davido and Stonebwoy did not charge for their performances.

According to Blakk Rasta, Richard Nii-Armah Quaye explained that due to his long-standing relationship with the Tanzanian musician, Diamond Platnumz, he didn’t request payment for his performance.

“He never paid any musician at the RNAQ party. That is Ghana’s latest richest man. Richard Nii-Armah Quaye told me that he has been a very good friend of Diamond Platnumz and he has been friends with him for over 5 years. So, when it was time for his birthday, he invited him and the only thing Diamond requested was to be picked up with his private jet.

“That is the same thing he did with Davido and Stonebwoy and they did not talk about money,” he stated.

Asked if Shatta Wale was dropped from performing at the birthday ceremony and why, Blakk Rasta indicated his sources disclosed that Shatta Wale requested to be paid before performing at the birthday party.

“Could this be the reason why Shatta Wale was dropped? The information I have is that Shatta Wale asked him how much he was going to be paid to put up a performance,” he remarked.

Bawumia hailed for his ‘gold’ initiatives driving conversations on Ghana’s gold sector

0

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana

A political communication consultant, Ekow Acquah has attributed Ghana’s recent focus on gold for economic transformation to former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to Ekow Acquah, Bawumia’s vision, three years ago, to propose to the Bank of Ghana to start a gold purchase agreement aimed to significantly boost Ghana’s then paltry gold reserves paved the way for the country to have enough reserves and introduced the “Gold for Oil” programme.

In an extensive article, the political communication consultant observed that it is the impact of the “Gold for Oil” programme which has ignited the conversations on gold, resulting in the establishment of the Gold Board by the governing National Democratic Congress.

Read Ekow Acquah’s full article below:

How Dr. Bawumia changed the conversation about gold in Ghana

By Dr. Ekow Acquah, Political Communications Consultant

Ghana, since its pre-independence days, was globally renowned for its richness in the precious mineral gold. For the country to have been called Gold Coast, because it was named Ghana, showed how rich this country was in gold, and is still is, decades on. However, for decades the conversation around Ghana’s gold, largely focused on mining, and exporting same, a cycle which has been one of the nation’s biggest sources of foreign exchange.

However, with the global economic dynamics hit by unprecedented crisis, nations began to think outside the box, in response to depreciating local currencies and rising cost of living. In Ghana, a 21st century leader, then Vice President of the Republic, in 2022, proposed an innovative policy idea that would change Ghana’s perspective on it precious mineral, gold, forever.

First, he proposed the Bank of Ghana’s Gold Purchasing programme to significantly increase Ghana’s paltry 8-tonne golden reserves – a programme which became useful to Bawumia’s second impactful gold proposal, the Gold for Oil Programme. In the midst of the global economic crisis and falling local currencies in 2022, Ghana’s Cedi was not spared, as demand for foreign to import goods increased.

Bawumia identified the demand for foreign exchange to finance the import of oil products as a major source of Cedi depreciation. To address the persistent Cedi depreciation, demand for more forex for oil imports and its corresponding high increase in cost of fuel and utilities, Dr. Bawumia proposed the Gold for Oil, a programme which ensured that Ghana did not have to look for foreign exchange to pay for its oil imports. Rather, it used its gold, purchased by the Bank of Ghana, to pay for the oil imports.

As envisaged by Dr. Bawumia, this reduced pressure on the Cedi, curbing its rapid decline, as well as stabilised fuel prices considerably. These two remarkable interventions by Dr. Bawumia, did not only addressed the two perennial issues above, but it has also completely changed the conversation on gold in Ghana.

Truth is, before 2022 no policy maker in Ghana had presented a policy initiative on the Bank of Ghana increasing its gold reserves through a gold purchase program, gold for oil, or the use of gold for stabilizing the currency etc. Today the NDC government has introduced the Goldbod building on the basic idea introduced by Dr. Bawumia.

The question is, after over 65 years of independence why did Ghanaians suddenly start focusing on Gold? The answer is simple: it was Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President, who awoke Ghana to the role gold can play in building reserves and stabilizing the exchange rate.

If today, all the talk is about bringing gold to the forefront of managing the economy, it is because of Dr. Bawumia’s defining policy proposals on gold, and he ought be commended. In the the video below from 2022, Dr. Bawumia explains his thinking on how Ghana can use gold to support the economy.

Treasury bills were undersubscribed last week Treasury bills were undersubscribed last week

The government intends to borrow GH¢6.67 billion through treasury bills in its next short-term debt sale scheduled for Friday, April 11, 2025.

In the previous auction held on Friday, April 4, 2025, the government rejected bids totaling GH¢2.36 billion out of the GH¢4.05 billion tendered for the 91-day, 182-day, and 364-day bills.

The total amount tendered fell short of the government’s target of GH¢4.39 billion by approximately GH¢334 million.

Of the total bids received, the government accepted GH¢1.69 billion, rejecting the remaining GH¢2.36 billion.

The 91-day bill saw the highest demand, attracting GH¢3.38 billion in bids, of which GH¢1.44 billion was accepted.

The 182-day and 364-day bills recorded bids of GH¢501 million and GH¢176 million, with the government accepting GH¢81 million and GH¢161 million, respectively.

Yields on the 91-day bill declined by 7 basis points to 15.64%. The 182-day bill saw the largest drop, declining by 23 basis points to 16.50%, while the 364-day bill decreased by 1 basis point to 18.83%.

The rejection of a significant portion of the bids indicates that the government remains cautious about borrowing costs despite its ongoing financing needs.

Ayariga, Police Commander’s Houses Set Ablaze In Bawku

The restive municipality of Bawku in the Upper East Region is engulfed in violence again, with one fatality recorded. Also reported was the setting ablaze of the residences of the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, and the Divisional Police Commander, ACP Adamu Seidu.

Two other individuals are reported to be critically injured in the renewed clashes on Wednesday.

Signs of impending strife were visible after a press conference by some Kusasi youth, during which they slammed President John Dramani Mahama for not fulfilling his promise to address the Bawku conflict.

They also attacked the Majority Leader, promising that, in the elections to come, both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential and parliamentary candidates would receive zero votes in the ballot boxes.

Wednesday’s clash was reportedly triggered when one of the factions involved in the prolonged chieftaincy dispute ordered women from the opposing faction, who were trading in their market, to leave immediately. A confrontation ensued, prompting the police to move in to restore order.

Some armed youth reportedly opened fire, prompting the police to respond. During the exchange, one civilian lost his life, and others sustained injuries. Incensed youth, during the exchange, charged at the private residence of the Police Commander and set it ablaze.

The Police Service was forced to evacuate personnel from the barracks. In addition, the police barracks and a security vehicle were also set on fire.

Earlier, a Bawku group expressed disappointment in President Mahama and the Majority Leader during a press conference.

According to them, political parties were using the Bawku conflict to advance their causes. They accused the Majority Leader, whose mother is a Mamprusi, of showing little concern when a woman and her baby were killed in a house not far from his own in Bawku.

They also criticised the visit to Bawku by the President and the Majority Leader, alleging that other Members of Parliament (MPs) from the area were excluded.

Reset Agenda; Kingmakers of Prampram Appeal to Mahama, Chieftaincy Minister to Restore Integrity in House of Chiefs

The Kingmakers of the Annor We Royal Family in Prampram have issued a passionate appeal to President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and religious affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, to extend the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) “Reset Agenda” to the chieftaincy institution, beginning with a reform of the National and Greater Accra Regional Houses of Chiefs.

Speaking at a press conference in Prampram, the traditional leaders expressed deep concern over what they described as entrenched corruption and partisanship among key figures within the chieftaincy adjudication bodies. They singled out the leadership of the President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, accusing him of overseeing processes that have undermined the institution’s integrity and fuelled longstanding disputes.

The kingmakers particularly cited the controversial chieftaincy dispute in Prampram involving Michael Quarcopome Packer, also known as Nene Tetteh Wakah. They argue that his gazettement in 2021 contradicted an earlier ruling and was done despite a pending petition challenging his legitimacy a move they say has worsened divisions and tensions in the area.

“It is disheartening that decisions affecting the very soul of our traditions are now marred by favoritism and partisan bias,” one of the kingmakers stated. “The gazettement of Nene Tetteh Wakah, a member of the Packer/Sackey family, was not only illegitimate but a direct violation of traditional norms that have governed Prampram since its founding in 1680.”

The kingmakers emphasized that historically, only the Abbey Royal Family has held the mandate to ascend the Prampram stool. They claim the change orchestrated by Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi and his allies in 2021 has disrupted the traditional lineage and provoked instability.

They also linked the emergence of Nene Tetteh Wakah to a wave of violence in the area, including the 2018 murder of Prampram Mankralo, Nene Atsure Benta, describing it as the first such killing in the town’s history tied directly to chieftaincy conflicts.

“The aftermath of this controversial appointment has been bloodshed, anarchy, and sorrow for the people of Prampram,” they lamented.

Calling for immediate intervention, the kingmakers urged President Mahama and Minister Ahmed Ibrahim to institute a comprehensive review of the leadership of the chieftaincy institutions. According to them, the National and Greater Accra Regional Houses of Chiefs are now dominated by individuals whose political affiliations compromise their ability to deliver impartial justice.

“For the Reset Agenda to truly restore trust in our national institutions, it must begin with cleaning up the traditional leadership structures. The president and the minister must also weed out top NDC gurus allegedly backing Nene Tetteh Wakah to perpetrate crimes and always have his way out whenever the law catches up with him”- the kingmakers averred.

The appeal adds to growing calls for chieftaincy reforms across the country, especially in communities where unresolved disputes continue to threaten peace and development.

My position on anti-LGBTQI Bill has not changed

0

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, and Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, has reiterated his unwavering stance on the Anti-LGBTQI Bill currently before Parliament.

Sam George confirmed that he has resubmitted the Private Member’s Bill and is awaiting an invitation from the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament to move it forward.

In an interview on TV3 on Friday, April 11, the MP stressed that his position on the bill remains unchanged and reaffirmed his opposition to LGBTQI activities in Ghana.

“I have not changed my position on the anti-LGBTQI Bill. I have laid the Private Member’s Bill before parliament,” he stated, adding that LGBTQI practices are an abomination and must not be accepted in the country.

Sam George has been one of the leading advocates for the bill, which seeks to criminalize LGBTQI activities in Ghana.

Proponents argue that the bill reflects Ghana’s cultural and religious values, while critics contend that it violates fundamental human rights.

President John Dramani Mahama recently suggested that the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill would stand a greater chance of success and broader legitimacy if introduced as a government-sponsored initiative.

Speaking during a meeting with the Catholic Bishops Conference, Mr. Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s cultural and moral values could be more effectively upheld through an educational curriculum that promotes family values.

“For the bill to have broader legitimacy and a higher chance of success, it should ideally come with government backing,” Mr. Mahama stated.

Alabaster Box Fights Medikal Over Copyright Infringement

0

Alabaster Box

Ghanaian music group, Alabaster Box, has accused hiphop artiste Medikal of sampling one of its popular songswithout seeking permission.

Alabaster Box emphasised that Medikal ought to have asked permission before using portions of the song, ‘Akwaaba’ in his new song titled ‘Welcome to Africa’.

The question of whether Medikal should pay Alabaster Box for the unauthorised use of parts of ‘Akwaaba’remains unanswered.

Alabaster Box is also yet to state whether Medikal should compensate the group because he broke copyright regulations and the group was not consulted throughout the song’s sample version’s creation.

Copyright infringement therefore occurs when; “(a) the work is exhibited for commercial use, (b) the work is distributed, (c) the work is reproduced, extracted, and duplicated for commercial use.”

In case of infringement of a copyright, the Act 690 of 2005 provides the following remedies to apply; “the owner of the copyright may (a) petition the copyright administrator for the resettlement for such dispute through arbitration, (b) institute criminal proceedings against the offender. If the offender is convicted, he stands to pay a fine. (c) He can also institute proceedings in the court for an injunction to stop continuing of infringement.”

The group, however, claims that Medikal sampled their popular song ‘Akwaaba’ without seeking permission.

It said the first 10 seconds of ‘Welcome to Africa’ closely mirror the original composition of ‘Akwaaba’, suggesting not only direct copying but also intentional use.

The group argued that the use of the word ‘Akwaaba’ in the title and lyrics of Medikal’s song indicates clear awareness of their work.

It alleges that Medikal aggressively promoted and distributed the allegedly infringing track on major streaming platforms including YouTube, Audiomack, Spotify, Apple Music, and Boomplay, further deepening the violation.

Through lawyers, Alabaster Box has issued a formal demand for the immediate removal of ‘Welcome to Africa’ from all digital and traditional platforms.

The group also wants an end to any marketing, performance or sales activity related to the song, and is demanding termination of any contracts associated with its production and distribution.

In addition to halting all promotional activity, the group is requesting a full financial account of revenue generated from the song, as well as the disclosure of all individuals or companies involved in its promotion or distribution.

Should these demands not be met, Alabaster Box is threatening to escalate the matter to court, where they will seek an injunction against further use, as well as the destruction of all copies of the song.

They are also seeking financial compensation for the unauthorised use and additional damages for what they describe as willful copyright infringement, along with recovery of legal fees.

Neither Medikal nor his management has officially responded to the allegation.

In a discussion on HOT 97 on April 10, 2025, Vybz Kartel explained that the process was “crazy,” revealing that he recorded tracks, including the popular hit “Fever,” with a phone and improvised soundproofing with mattresses.

“It was crazy because, in my cell, we had mattresses so I had to kneel on concrete and put a mattress in front of me and also wrap it around my head. I had two phones that had earpieces that played the beats and the other was what I used to record the vocals.

“I had the other prisoners outside watching if the officers were coming. I will record one line and go watch it if the officers are coming, and then record the next verses. It was stressful but it had to be done,” he said.

Vybz Kartel added that the phones he used for his recording were always seized from him.

“They took phones from me all the time. But I never got caught recording because the other prisoners were there looking out for me. But I always get searched and they find cell phones and recording devices,” he added.

NDC members at Mampong accuse Dr Amoakohene of allegedly interfering in MCE selection

Some NDC members at Mampong have accused Dr Amoakohene of allegedly interfering in MCE selection Some NDC members at Mampong have accused Dr Amoakohene of allegedly interfering in MCE selection

Some aggrieved National Democratic Congress (NDC) members at Mampong in the Ashanti Region have accused the regional minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene of interfering in the selection of a Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area.

Speaking in a recent interview on TV Africa, they expressed dissatisfaction with the actions of the minister.

“I attended the regional and the national vetting because of the love I have for the party. Nii Adjabeng and Esther Dwomoh were vetted at the national level. After the exercise, we received the order of performance, and some names were omitted from the list. But one of them has now reportedly been nominated as the MCE.

“I want to put it on record that the regional minister orchestrated this with the help of one Dada Alex. He wants to impose his preferred candidate on us. I want to say on authority that the regional minister orchestrated this with the help of one Dada Alex,” the spokesperson stated.

On Thursday, April 10, the youth went on rampage and set party properties ablaze following reports that Esther Dwomoh had been nominated as MCE.

They claimed that the shortlist for the MCE position following the vetting included only three individuals: the 2024 NDC Parliamentary Candidate for the area, Yakubu Yakubu; the current Constituency Chairman, Mohammed Kamil; and party member Imoro Iddrisu.

New NIA boss questions legitimacy of 2022 SIM card registration exercise

0

Chief Executive Officer of NIA, Yayra Koku Chief Executive Officer of NIA, Yayra Koku

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Yayra Koku, has questioned the legitimacy of the 2022 SIM card registration exercise.

According to him, the fingerprints collected during the exercise were never authenticated against the NIA’s biometric database.

In a post shared on his X page, as cited by GhanaWeb Business, Koku revealed that the fingerprint data were captured and stored within the systems used by telecom operators but were not cross-verified with the NIA’s database.

“They only took a picture of your fingerprints and saved them in whatever system they were using,” Koku stated, emphasising that “captured fingerprints were not used to authenticate identities with any authoritative system.”

This has sparked heated debates on social media regarding the legitimacy of the registration process.

Referencing a letter written by the former Executive Secretary of the NIA under the Akufo-Addo administration, Prof. Kenneth Attafuah, to the Telecoms Chamber in September 2021, Koku confirmed that the biometric data were not matched or authenticated using the NIA’s systems.

Koku stressed the importance of proper biometric authentication in verifying individual identities, explaining that it typically involves fingerprint scanning, facial recognition with liveness checks and iris scans but noted these procedures were evidently absent from the SIM registration process.

“You cannot confirm the identity of an individual without them undergoing biometric authentication,” he said, seeking to clarify the surge of public inquiries directed at him regarding the issue.

The statement raises serious concerns about the effectiveness and purpose of the SIM re-registration campaign which was initially justified as a national security measure to link mobile numbers to verified identities.

With this shocking revelation, stakeholders are calling for transparency and accountability regarding the handling of citizens’ biometric data throughout the exercise.

NDC Summons Mampong leaders after MCE nomination unrest

0

Ashanti Regional Executives of the National Democratic Congress have invited the party’s Constituency executives in Asante Mampong following violent disturbances over the nomination of a Municipal Chief Executive.

Some aggrieved National Democratic Congress supporters in the constituency stormed the party’s office on Thursday and vandalized properties while setting others ablaze outside the office.

The youth claimed that they have information that one Esther Dwomoh has been nominated for the Municipal Chief Executive position, although an official communication from the Presidency is yet to be released.

The youth say three individuals, the 2024 Parliamentary Candidate, Yakubu Issifu; the current Constituency Chairman, Mohammed Kamil; and Imoro Iddrisu were shortlisted after the vetting, and one of them must be nominated.

Deputy Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NDC, Baah Acheamfour, told Citi News the regional executives have initiated processes to look into the concerns of the aggrieved youth.

“As we speak, the regional chairman has invited the party leaders in the constituency for some deliberation. Currently, we are in Accra at a NEC meeting after which we will meet them and see how we can resolve this and other issues in some selected constituencies,” he stated.

He also called for calm among NDC party supporters, insisting that the President should be allowed to make his choices.

“As I said, we respect the decision of the president and the committee who voted for these aspirants, and we should respect that. If, under some circumstances, there are things you don’t understand with some of the decisions taken, you can come and seek clarity,” he added.

Kennedy Agyapong Responds to the NIB’s Raid on Ntim Fordjour’s Residence

0

Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has added his voice to the growing concerns surrounding the recent invasion of Rev. John Ntim Fordjour’s residence by men believed to be from a state security agency.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, 10th April, 2025, Kennedy Agyapong described the incident as a “sad reminder of the troubling times we are living in.” He said that as a former MP for a neighboring constituency and a one-time Chairman of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, he could not remain silent while such acts are being carried out.

$2.5bn Needed to eliminate educational infrastructure deficit — Minister

0

The government needs $2.5 billion between 2025 and 2028 to eliminate the huge infrastructure deficit in the educational sector, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has said.

“From where I sit, between now and 2028, if we are to respond to all the infrastructure needs in the education sector alone, we will require an investment of $2.5 billion to get our infrastructure running,” he said.

Mr Iddrisu, who is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale South, was responding to concerns raised by members of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) during its meeting in Sunyani last Wednesday.

Infrastructure gap

He explained that the infrastructure gap was huge because the previous government failed to expand the facilities during the implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme to deal with the expected increases in enrolment.

A section of the participants

A section of the participants

He said the government had planned to expand infrastructure to end the double-track system by 2027 since the system was not desirable for academic work.

Mr Iddrisu urged the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to identify some CHASS schools with infrastructure deficits to invest in the improvement of the projects in schools.

“We expect that you should have a dedicated formula that looks into expanded accommodations and classrooms for a number of CHASS schools to increase their intake,” he said.

Mr Iddrisu said this year alone, the government would be required to dedicate GH¢6.5 billion to finance the Free SHS policy.

He challenged CHASS and the public to continue to search for answers to sustainable finance of the Free SHS programme.

Mr Iddrisu said one of the immediate Free SHS funding alternatives available for the government was the GETFund.

He therefore urged GETFund to find innovative ways of procuring furniture and textbooks for schools across the country.

Mr Iddrisu challenged GETFund to increase its emergency budget allocation to deal with emergency situations such as rainstorms and fire outbreaks.

Shooting incident

He condemned the shooting incident that occurred at the Adventist SHS in Kumasi on Friday, April 4, 2025.

Mr Iddrisu charged CHASS to review its inspectorate division in schools to take away dangerous weapons from students.

“In order for guns, knives and other tools and equipment of violence not to be found in our schools, you have the full support of the government to initiate those inspections,” he said.

That, according to him, would create a serene learning environment, explaining that the recent development could not be part of the training of a Ghanaian child because “that is immoral, violent and not a Ghanaian culture”.

“When I heard about the shooting incident, my immediate response was ‘unGhanaian’,” he said.

Mr Iddrisu, however, urged members of CHASS to treat students with compassion, fairness and justice.

Corruption

On corruption, he said the ministry was currently conducting an audit of the Computerised School Selection Placement System (CSSPS) to address the issue of corruption in the school placement.

Mr Iddrisu said the ministry expected the placement system to function effectively with minimal human interference to eliminate corruption.

Regarding outstanding salary arrears, he said the Ministry of Finance was in discussions with the bureaucrats at the Ministry of Education to verify and authenticate the arrears for settlement.

He underscored the need for the retooling of school laboratories and the supply of vehicles, including buses, to facilitate their movement.

Commendation

The President of CHASS, Rev. Fr Stephen Owusu Sekyere, commended the government for the timely disbursement of funds to procure food items to feed students.

He said the crucial intervention of disbursing funds to schools to purchase food items had helped to improve the feeding of students.

Rev. Fr Sekyere, however, appealed to the minister to come out with a clear policy guideline to govern their dealings with the Parents Association (PAs) in their schools.

That, he said, would foster understanding and prevent unnecessary friction and interdiction of their members.

Rev. Fr Sekyere urged the minister to try and investigate before interdicting heads of schools and act with compassion when they went wrong.

Challenges

He mentioned five years of outstanding arrears, inadequate infrastructure, furniture, installation of prepaid electricity meters in some schools, a lack of printers and modern cooking stoves as some of the challenges in schools.

Rev. Fr Sekyere said those challenges continued to create discomfort for teachers and students, threatening the delivery of quality education.

He appealed to politicians and other opinion leaders hosting the schools to stop interfering in their activities.

Why I can’t be a coach

0

Former Black Stars forward Kevin-Prince Boateng Former Black Stars forward Kevin-Prince Boateng

Former Black Stars forward Kevin-Prince Boateng has explained that he does not have the temperament to become a manager.

The former Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund midfielder revealed that he once had a strong desire to pursue a career in coaching. However, he realized that he lacks the patience the job requires.

As a result, he decided to become a football agent to guide young players in making career-progressing decisions using his own experiences.

“I always wanted to be a coach, but then I found out I don’t have enough patience,” said KP Boateng.

“And then I said, yeah. But I want to help young players because I’ve been through a lot in my career. I had a lot of agents—some good ones, some bad ones—and I know how it can be. If you have the wrong guidance, sometimes it can be difficult.”

He further elaborated on why becoming a football agent is more meaningful to him than coaching.

“So I just said I would love to help young players, put them on the right path, show them what is important, and keep them grounded as much as possible,” he concluded.

Kevin-Prince Boateng, who played for notable clubs such as Barcelona, AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, and Las Palmas, retired from football in 2023.

Two years after his retirement, he is now set to embark on a career in player agency.

‘Child was raped every half an hour’ in two months in eastern DR Congo: UN

The United Nations has condemned the widespread rape and sexual violence against children in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) reported in the first two months of this year amid heightened tensions between the M23 armed group and government forces.

Spokesperson for the United Nations children’s agency UNICEF, James Elder, warned on Friday that the rate of sexual violence in the DRC against children had “never been higher”.

“Early reports show that children make up between 35 to 45 percent of the nearly 10,000 cases of rape and sexual violence reported … in just January and February of this year,” he told reporters in Geneva, speaking from Goma.

“In short, based on initial data … during the most intense phase of this year’s conflict in eastern DRC, a child was raped every half an hour,” he explained.

After the fallout of the Rwandan genocide in 1994, the DRC has been plagued with violence as rebel groups and government forces fight for control.

However, the conflict escalated in January after M23 fighters advanced rapidly, seizing the eastern city of Goma and the town of Bukavu in February.

At least 3,000 people have been killed, and more have been displaced from the eastern territory, prompting fears of a wider regional war.

Moreover, the UN and Western governments have accused Rwanda of backing M23 and providing the group with arms, which Kigali has denied.

‘Systemic crisis’

Elder warned the recent uptick in violence against children is not an isolated incident due to the conflict but a “systemic crisis”.

“It is a weapon of war and a deliberate tactic of terror. And it destroys families and communities,” he said, stressing that the figures could be “just the tip of the iceberg, hidden beneath layers of fear, stigma, and insecurity”.

He said this “should shake us to our core. Certainly, it should compel urgent and collective action.”

The UN official called for more prevention efforts and “survivor-centred services” that allow for a safe and accessible way to “report abuse without fear”.

“Survivors must see the world stand with them, not turn away. And perpetrators must face justice,” he urged.

I was scared to release ‘Asylum’ due to its controversial lyrics

0

Ghanaian musician, Olivetheboy, has recalled how he was scared to release his hit song ‘Asylum’.

According to the singer, he was uncertain about how the public would react to the song’s controversial lyrics wrapped in a love theme.

Speaking in an interview on 3Music TV, Olivetheboy admitted that even before the release, people around him warned that the song’s content could be seen as “toxic.”

“I was a bit scared when I dropped my song Asylum because of the content in it. People came to me telling me it’s toxic. So, I was thinking about it, that it wasn’t going to do very good. The song’s content is quite harsh,” he said.

‘Asylum’ vividly portrays a heartbreaking situation, with lyrics hinting that a lover’s decision to leave could result in mental breakdown or even fatal consequences.

The narrative implies that if one partner walks away, the other could drive her to madness or even an untimely death.

The song became one of the biggest hits of 2024 and earned a nomination for ‘Most Popular Song of the Year’ at the 26th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

Mahama pledges to complete Kumasi Military Hospital

0

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery for military personnel and their families, with a strong pledge to complete and furnish the Kumasi Military Hospital located at Afari in the Central Command.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony of officer cadets at the Ghana Military Academy on Friday, April 11, the President emphasized that the welfare of the armed forces remains a top priority under his administration.

“Soldiers and civilian staff, your health is also a priority. We have a viable vision to upgrade your medical health facilities. We will, therefore, complete and equip the Kumasi Military Hospital at Afari in the Central Command. We have also budgeted for a military field hospital in Tamale. We want you and your families to have access to quality health care,” President Mahama said.

The President outlined a broader agenda to strengthen support systems for both active personnel and veterans, noting that the government was already taking steps to enhance working conditions and guarantee fair compensation.

“Dear military personnel and civilian staff, I am determined to systematically improve your conditions of service. GEHOC will be one of our key plants in providing sustainable financing for the Ghana Armed Forces. Your sacrifices deserve recognition. For our retired personnel who have sacrificed so much for our nation, we will ensure that your retirement benefits are paid promptly,” he added.

The remarks were met with applause from the audience, which included high-ranking military officials, government representatives, and families of the graduating cadets.

President Mahama’s assurance comes as part of broader efforts to modernize the Ghana Armed Forces and ensure that military personnel receive the care and recognition they deserve for their service to the nation.

NPP did worse things; Mahama is only giving them farmgate treatment – Nana Yaa Jantuah

0

Presidential Staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah has accused members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of crying foul over alleged intimidation by the Mahama-led administration.

In a statement, Jantuah explained that President John Mahama has been calm and gentle with the NPP, especially when compared to the actions of the NPP while they were in power.

Jantuah, a former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), made these remarks in response to recent raids on the homes of former government officials, including a failed attempt by operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to arrest Assin South MP, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour,, at his residence in Spintex on Wednesday.

The incident followed allegations that two suspicious flights had landed at Kotoka International Airport, reportedly carrying drugs and cash.

The raid was described by some as politically motivated, with claims that it was an attempt to use security agencies to intimidate and harass opposition members.

However, in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Jantuah rejected these claims, stating that the NPP members were being treated far better than they deserved.

“They did worse things, and for them, Mahama is giving them farmgate treatment. What exactly is being done to NPP members? Where is the intimidation here? We have to separate the human aspect from those engaged in vandalism,” she stated.

Jantuah also criticized the Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee for going public with his findings.

“Why do you even come to the media after you had the tip-off? If he doesn’t trust anybody, at least he should trust his Speaker, or there is someone he can trust because this is of national interest. Who leaves evidence in any clandestine activity?” she chided.

Bawku MP Ayariga condemns violent clashes, backs Otumfuo’s peace efforts

0

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, April 11, GNA – Mr Mahama Ayariga, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, has condemned the recent violent clashes between police and youth in Bawku, resulting in fatalities, injuries, and an attack on his private residence.

In a statement issued by Mr Ayariga, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, Accra, he expressed sympathy for those affected and appealed for calm amidst rising tensions over the prolonged Bawku conflict.

It acknowledged the alleged deep-seated frustration among the youth regarding the slow pace of resolving the Bawku and Kusaug conflict, as well as concerns over the conduct of some law enforcement officers.

“I understand the anger and frustration of the youth about the pace of the resolution of the situation in Bawku and Kusaug and the misconduct of some misguided law enforcement officers,” it said.

The statement noted that the NDC government remained committed to ensuring justice and lasting peace.

It also reaffirmed Mr Ayariga’s support for the ongoing peace efforts mediated by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, emphasising that the process had the backing of key traditional authorities in the region.

“In this regard, I will urge all of us to remain committed to the peace process being led by His Majesty the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

“The Overlord of Kusaug, Zugran Naaba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, and the Overlord of Mamprugu, Nayiri Naa Bohagu Mahami Sheriga, are fully participating in the process,” it said.

The statement further assured of the MP’s unwavering commitment to his constituents to resolving the long-standing dispute in accordance with Ghana’s laws and judicial decisions.

“Whilst attending an official assignment out of the country, I have learnt about fatal violent encounters between the police and the youth in Bawku and a subsequent vandalization and attempt to burn my private residence in Bawku in anger.

“I want to assure the people of Bawku and Kusaug, whom I represent, that I remain resolute and committed to a lasting resolution of the matter according to the well-established laws and judicial decisions of Ghana, which must ultimately be respected and enforced,” it stated.

The statement dismissed alleged coordinated smear campaigns against Mr Ayariga on social media, calling on the public to disregard “lies being told” by political opponents.

“Kindly disregard the lies being told about me by political detractors and people seeking shamelessly to take advantage of the current unfortunate situation in Bawku and Kusaug to settle personal electoral political scores,” it said.

Reaffirming his long-standing position on the chieftaincy dispute, the statement quoted Mr Ayariga also the Majority Leader, as saying, “My personal position on the matter has been known to all over the years and has never changed. It will not change.

“I agree with the youth of Kusaug that another person cannot reside in Bawku claiming to be chief. But in reverence to the great Asante Stool, I leave that matter to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to resolve expeditiously. The law enforcement officers must be cautious,” it said.

Cartels, political cronies ‘hijack’ premix fuel; fisherfolk don’t benefit

0

Fishermen pulling back their net after making a catch Fishermen pulling back their net after making a catch

The Executive Director of the Centre for Environmental Management and Sustainable Energy (CEMSE), Ben Nsiah, has stated that fisherfolk do not benefit from premix fuel subsidies despite a decline in crude oil prices on the market.

He asserted that certain cartels and individuals close to power within the marine value chain tend to benefit more than local fish farmers.

In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb Business, the energy expert said; “With respect to subsidies, I think that the only product subsidized for us locally has been the premix, which is used to support fishermen or people who engage in certain domestic marine activities.”

“I think that these premix subsidies that we give to some of these fisherfolk or fish farmers do not benefit them but rather benefit certain cartels or perhaps some political cronies within the value chain, because there’s a lot of leakage when it comes to premix subsidies in Ghana. Some corrupt politicians are benefiting, while these fishermen are not,” Ben Nsiah added.

The National Premix Fuel Committee (NPFC) Regulations, 2016 (L.I. 2233), instruct the Landing Beach Committee (LBC) to undertake developmental projects within the community using profits from the sale of premix fuel, of which 53 percent is allocated for community development.

The prices of fish mostly increase due to the shortage of premix fuel.

It is worth recalling that the previous government introduced digital canoe identification cards to streamline the process of purchasing premix fuel, thereby addressing the stress, hoarding, and challenges in fuel acquisition.

The new digital system aims to enable fisherfolk to directly access the quantity of premix fuel they require at the pumps using their digital canoe identification cards, which are linked to their vessels.

The data generated will be essential for re-ordering, while each order is monitored and measured against timelines to enhance delivery efficiency.

‘He doesn’t handle his social media’ – Vida on claims Stonebwoy unfollowed Peller over Shatta Wale

0

Public Relations Officer of Burniton Music Group, Vida Adutwumwaa Public Relations Officer of Burniton Music Group, Vida Adutwumwaa

The Public Relations Officer of Burniton Music Group, Vida Adutwumwaa, has addressed recent criticisms surrounding dancehall artiste Stonebwoy’s decision to unfollow Nigerian social media influencer, Peller.

It will be recalled that Stonebwoy appeared in a live TikTok session with Peller ahead of his UK concert on March 8, 2025, where he even invited Peller to join him on his album tour.

The interaction sparked controversy online, with some social media users criticising Stonebwoy for choosing to associate with a Nigerian influencer over Ghanaian content creators.

Peller later revealed in a separate live TikTok session that Stonebwoy had unfollowed him, speculating it was due to his recent interactions with Ghanaian musician Shatta Wale.

Responding to the allegations, Vida Adutwumwaa clarified in an interview with Onua FM on April 10, 2025, that Stonebwoy does not personally manage his social media accounts.

“We have a crew that handles Stonebwoy’s social media accounts. So, at any point, two or more people are handling our accounts, and there won’t be a report of everything that happens on social media.

She further explained that the social media team only reports major issues to the artiste, and their primary focus is to promote his music and brand.

“The main thing we post on the social media handle is his music, and things centred around promoting him. We only report to him if there is a big issue that requires his approval.

“As to who we follow and unfollow is up to the team and we don’t have a meeting on who to follow and unfollow. Also, if the artiste wants to have a relationship with a certain personality, we can choose to follow or unfollow but it doesn’t have anything to do with a certain artiste,” she added.

Law against mis/disinformation to be laid before Parliament – Sam George

0

Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has signaled to actors in the media space that a bill will soon be sent to Parliament for debate and approval to check misinformation and disinformation.

He, however, clarified that this bill will not cover criticisms of the government.

Speaking in an interview with TV3 on April 11, he warned against deliberate peddling of falsehood and misinformation on multiple forms of media.

“Irrespective of your political colour, if you engage in peddling of fake news, the law will deal with you,” he said.

Sam George first made the proclamation about the legislation to combat misinformation and disinformation during parliamentary proceedings on February 5.

The Ningo-Prampram MP emphasised the urgent need for a legal framework to address the growing threat of false information, both in Parliament and across the country.

“The ministry will be coming again to deal with the issues of misinformation and disinformation with legislation to this House. And I will urge Members of Parliament to support it,” he stated.

He cited the case of Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who was invited by the Appointments Committee of Parliament over an alleged doctored social media post.

He mentioned instances where altered images of him were presented on the floor of Parliament to stress the dangers of manipulated digital content.

“Even in this chamber yesterday, there was misinformation. In fact, in the past one week, this House has carried out business on two occasions on the back of misinformation,” he noted.

The minister re-echoed the government’s commitment to cracking down on individuals who deliberately spread false information, stating that such acts should attract legal consequences.

“It’s important that we take misinformation and disinformation seriously and deal with it once and for all, and crack the whip and make sure that persons who are actively engaged in this face the full rigours of the law,” he said.

The Executive Director of Center for Policy Development, Ismail Yahuza, said the objective of the Trade, Industry and Investment Summit is to create jobs, reduce unemployment and uplift the living standards of the people of the North.

“The only way we can bridge the gap between the North and the South is to improve on economic activities,” he said.

He disclosed that this year’s summit themed, “Enhancing Trade & Industrial Growth through Strategic Investments and Accelerated Export” will include a grand durbar, conferences and seminars, trade exhibitions and an awards night to climax the event and motivate businesses to do more for others to emulate.

The Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, speaking at the launch noted that the summit is a platform where investors, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and development actors converge to connect ideas with funding, challenges with solutions, and aspirations with tangible outcomes.

“Our focus is to explore how strategic investment can ignite industrial growth, and how a deliberate push toward export-led development can elevate the Northern Region onto the global economic stage,” he said.

The Northern Regional Minister, indicated that the region is rich, not only in natural resources, but in human capital, cultural heritage, and cross-border trade potential.

“With vast arable lands, emerging agro-industries, and a youthful entrepreneurial population, the region is well positioned to become a hub for Agro-processing. What we need now is targeted investment, investment that is smart, sustainable, and inclusive. Investment that brings jobs, improves infrastructure, builds local capacity, and opens markets beyond our borders,” he added. “Let us not forget, our domestic market is important, but it is only the beginning. If we are to industrialise and grow sustainably, we must produce to export. We must add value to what we grow and create and connect it to markets across Africa and the world. Through strategic partnerships, better trade facilitation, and targeted support for SMEs and cooperatives, we can turn Tamale and the wider Northern belt into an export-ready zone, one that contributes meaningfully to Ghana’s goals under initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).”

He assured stakeholders of the government’s unwavering commitment to promoting industrialisation and investment across all parts of Ghana, through programmes such as the Big Push, 24hr economy, business development entrepreneurship, and agriculture and agri business development amongst many others.

“We are therefore laying the foundation for a more resilient and diversified economy. We will continue to work to improve infrastructure, create a conducive business environment, and reduce barriers to investment and export, because we believe that real transformation happens when the private sector thrives,” he said.

Josh Acheampong is having a breakthrough season with Chelsea and is on course to win his first title with the Blues.

The English-born Ghanaian has been sensational for Chelsea in the UEFA Europa Conference League and earned praise from manager Enzo Maresca for yet another impressive display in a 2-0 win over Legia Warsaw on Thursday, April 10, 2025.

“The one I fell in love with tonight was Josh Acheampong. For me, potentially, he can be a fantastic player for this club and in football in general,” he said after the game.

“Since we started, I’ve been in love with him, but tonight he showed he can be a very good player for this club. A good player shows you they can play in different positions,” Maresca added.

Born to Ghanaian parents, Acheampong joined Chelsea’s academy at the age of eight and has risen through the ranks to the first team.

He is a defender who plays as a right-back, possessing exceptional defensive and attacking qualities. He fits the modern game with a good passing range, is technically adept, and demonstrates strong defensive awareness.

He was promoted to the senior team in December 2024 after signing a long-term contract that runs until 2029.

Acheampong, 18, was born in the London Borough of Waltham Forest on May 5, 2006. He is eligible to represent Ghana, England, and Ireland.

He currently holds English and Irish citizenship but has yet to secure Ghanaian citizenship. His ties to Ireland remain unclear.

Josh Acheampong has made nine appearances for Chelsea this season and has been the breakout star of the team. He has featured in four Premier League games, four Conference League matches, and one English Football League Cup game.

Why fears are growing of a return of civil war to South Sudan

0

Rising tensions in the east African country of South Sudan, culminating in the 26 March arrest of Vice-President Riek Machar, have sparked concerns that the world’s youngest nation is heading for another civil war.

His party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement In Opposition (SPLM-IO), has said that his house arrest “effectively brings… to a collapse” the fragile 2018 peace agreement that ended five years of fighting.

What’s the background?

South Sudan, one of the world’s poorest countries, gained independence from Sudan in 2011 after decades of struggle led by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), now under President Salva Kiir.

Just two years into independence, a civil war erupted when Kiir dismissed Machar as vice-president, accusing him of plotting a coup.

The ensuing conflict, largely fought along ethnic lines between supporters of the two leaders, resulted in an estimated 400,000 deaths and 2.5 million people being forced from their homes – more than a fifth of the population.

As part of the peace deal, Machar was reinstated as vice-president within a unity government that was meant to pave the way for elections.

Why is there tension now?

The current crisis was sparked at the beginning of March when the White Army militia, which was allied to Machar during the civil war, clashed with the army in Upper Nile state and overran a military base in Nasir.

Then on 7 March a UN helicopter attempting to evacuate troops came under fire, leaving several dead, including a high-ranking army general.

Nearly three weeks later, Machar and several of his associates were arrested. They were accused of trying to stir up a rebellion.

“The prospect for peace and stability in South Sudan has now been put into serious jeopardy,” Oyet Nathaniel Pierino, deputy leader of SPLM-IO, said at the time.

What about the 2018 peace deal?

While Machar’s inclusion in the unity government was a key part of the agreement, other parts of it have not been implemented.

The key issue for many South Sudanese is the security arrangement.

The deal outlined how former rebel forces and government soldiers would be brought together into a unified national army made up of 83,000 troops. The remainder were supposed to be disarmed and demobilised.

But this has not happened and there are still lots of militias aligned to different political groups.

The deal also outlined the establishment, with the help of the African Union, of a court meant to try the perpetrators of the violence. But this has not been created, in part because those holding some of the top positions in government are reluctant to set up something that could see them put on trial.

Elections that were supposed to happen in 2022 have still not taken place and neither has a new constitution been drawn up.

What is the problem between Machar and Kiir?

While Kiir and Machar, both in their 70s, were part of the SPLM that fought for independence, long-standing tensions exist.

These have been fuelled by ethnic divisions – Kiir is Dinka, while Machar is Nuer – and competing political ambitions.

When Kiir sacked Machar in 2013, triggering the civil war, Machar denounced him as a “dictator”.

Creating further problems between the two are the repeated postponements of elections. Polls have been delayed four times, leaving Machar unable to fulfil his presidential ambitions.

Who is Riek Machar?

Born in 1952, the 72-year-old was the 27th son of the chief of Ayod and Leer and was brought up in the Presbyterian Church.

As an undergraduate, he studied mechanical engineering at the University of Khartoum and in 1984 earned a PhD in philosophy and strategic planning at the UK’s Bradford University.

He switched sides on several occasions during the battle to secede from Sudan, as he sought to strengthen his position and that of his Nuer ethnic group.

He became vice-president of South Sudan at independence in 2011. Machar was sacked in 2013 and then reinstated as part of a deal in 2016, but then fled as fighting resumed.

Who is Salva Kiir?

Born in 1951, the 73-year-old devout Roman Catholic was the son of a cattle herder and the eighth of nine children.

At 17, he joined the Anyanya, one of the rebel groups that was fighting for southern independence during the First Sudanese Civil War in 1967. Sixteen years later – in the Second Sudanese Civil War – he was one of the five founding members of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army/Movement.

The former rebel commander, who specialised in military intelligence, was seen as a moderate within the SPLM and became its leader in 2005 after the death of John Garang in a helicopter crash

He became president of South Sudan on independence and has remained in that position for 14 years as no elections have taken place.

How bad could things get?

Nicholas Haysom, head of the UN mission in South Sudan, has warned the country is “teetering on the brink of a return to full-scale civil war”, which would devastate the nation that is still dealing with the aftermath of the last conflict.

There are concerns that a return to fighting could lead to “proxy warfare in the region”, according to Daniel Akech, an analyst at the Crisis Group think-tank.

“South Sudan is filled with so many armed groups, they’re all seeming to be gearing up for military engagement.”

The war in neighbouring Sudan adds another element of instability.

What is being done to ease the tensions?

The leaders of the members of the regional grouping Igad – including Uganda – are supposed to be the guarantors of the 2018 deal.

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni was in Juba recently and met Kiir, but the outcome of their discussions is not known.

Ugandan troops were also deployed to the country last month. South Sudan’s government said the deployment was part of a long-standing agreement with its neighbour and the soldiers are there to support the army.

An African Union delegation was also in the capital and, as well as talking to the president, diplomats hoped to sit down with Machar – but that did not happen. There has been not a statement from the AU in the wake of the visit.

Western embassies including the US and the UK have released statements calling for the de-escalation of tensions, but it is not clear what impact these have had.

Stonebwoy Not Behind Peller Unfollow Saga – PRO Clarifies

0

The Public Relations Officer of Burniton Music Group, Vida Adutwumwaa, has responded to recent criticisms regarding dancehall artiste Stonebwoy’s alleged decision to unfollow Nigerian social media influencer, Peller.

Stonebwoy had earlier engaged in a live TikTok session with Peller ahead of his UK concert on March 8, 2025, during which he invited the influencer to join him on his album tour. However, the interaction sparked backlash from a section of social media users, who accused Stonebwoy of sidelining Ghanaian content creators in favour of Nigerians.

Subsequently, Peller disclosed during another TikTok live session that Stonebwoy had unfollowed him, speculating that the action might have been influenced by his recent online engagements with Ghanaian musician Shatta Wale.

Clarifying the issue in an interview with Onua FM on April 10, 2025, Vida Adutwumwaa explained that Stonebwoy does not personally manage his social media handles.

“We have a dedicated team responsible for managing Stonebwoy’s social media platforms. At any given time, two or more people are in charge, and not every activity or action taken is directly reported to Stonebwoy,” she stated.

She further noted that the primary focus of the social media team is to promote the artiste’s music and brand.

“Our social media content is largely focused on Stonebwoy’s music and activities aimed at enhancing his brand visibility. Only major issues requiring his personal attention are brought to him,” she added.

Addressing the specific issue of following and unfollowing individuals on social media, she clarified that such actions are typically left to the discretion of the social media team.

“Decisions on who to follow or unfollow are determined by the team and are not necessarily influenced by the artiste. If Stonebwoy wishes to establish a relationship with a particular individual, we accommodate that, but following or unfollowing someone is not done to target any artiste or personality,” she emphasised.

NPP made no investment in ECG during their first term – Dubik Mahama

0

Former ECG boss, Samuel Dubik Mahama, has revealed that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) saw little to no investment during President Nana Akufo-Addo’s first term in office.

Speaking at the JoyNews National Dialogue on Thursday, Mr. Mahama said the government’s attention was focused on privatising ECG rather than improving its infrastructure and operations.

Court Affirms Annoh- Dompreh’s Election

0

Frank Annoh-Dompreh

A High Court in Koforidua has reaffirmed the election of Frank Annoh-Dompreh as Member of Parliament (MP) for the Nsawam/Adoagyiri Constituency, by dismissing a petition challenging his election last year.

This follows the decision of the court presided over by Justice Krofa Addae to uphold an application filed by Gary Nimako Marfo, the Director of Legal Affairs of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), asking the court to dismiss a petition filed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the area, Amenorpe Philibert Fummey.

The court, in its decision, dismissed the petition on ground that it had no merit, thereby reaffirming Mr. Annoh-Dompreh as the duly elected Member of Parliament for the area.

The court’s decision shutters the claims of the NDC, which challenged the declaration of the Electoral Commission (EC).

The party had vowed to contest the result, promising to use all legal avenues to ensure the declaration was overturned.

The parliamentary candidate subsequently filed an election petition challenging the legitimacy of Mr. Annoh-Dompreh’s election.

He later filed an application for substituted service which was granted by the court, and the MP was served with the petition through the substituted service.

The substituted order, issued on February 21, 2025, compelled Mr. Annoh-Dompreh, the Electoral Commission and Clerk of Parliament to appear before the court in Koforidua.

The court also ordered that the service be done through the High Court’s notice board, NPP office, Electoral Commission, the police station, the main lorry station, Fawe FM, and selected information centres.

The MP was served with the substituted order on February 26, 2025, paving a way for him to enter an appearance and put up a defence.

‘My dad has done a lot for us’ – Jordan Ayew

0

Ghana international Jordan Ayew has lauded the importance of his dad, Abedi Pele, in his career and that of his brothers.

Abedi is arguably one of the biggest talents to come out of Africa, with his sons, Ibrahim Ayew, Andre and Jordan all tolling the same path.

Jordan and Andre both played for Abedi’s former club, Olympique Marseille, before going their separate path.

Now at Leicester City, Jordan, who has 300 Premier League appearances under his belt, highlighted the importance of his parents in his life.

“My Dad has done a lot, for not only me, but my whole family. It’s not easy to come after your father in a sense of the expectations being so high back home and even in Europe,” he told the club’s website.

“I think me and my brother have coped really well with it and tried to focus on ourselves and ensure that we had our own journey.”

On his mom, he added, “My Mum tells me that, but mums are always positive! Personally, that’s how I feel, that my parents can be proud of the journey me and my brother have made.”

The Black Stars captain is confident both he and his brother Andre still have a lot to offer.

“There’s still more to come from us, and hopefully we can give them more moments to enjoy,” he continued.

MzGee opens up on sabotage, body shaming

0

MzGee is a media personality MzGee is a media personality

Media personality MzGee has sparked conversations about intra-gender support and respect with a monologue on her Gee O’clock show, urging deeper reflection on the contradictions in how women treat one another, particularly in professional settings.

In a heartfelt reflection, MzGee recounted an early experience in her career where her relentless pursuit of exclusive stories was downplayed by a colleague simply because she had no children.

“I used to hop. Wherever there was an event, you’d find me there. Even if you didn’t invite me, I’d show up because I wanted to get exclusives,” she recalled.

“One day, a colleague said, ‘Gee, you don’t have a child, so you’re all over the place. If you had a child, you wouldn’t have had the time to be roaming and scouting for news.’”

For MzGee, that remark wasn’t just a passing comment — it was a stark reminder of the subtle ways women undermine one another, especially in professional environments.

“Someone will say it’s not a big deal, but it is a big deal,” she stressed. “Let’s assume that at the time the comment was made, I was struggling to have a child. How would it have felt?”

She lamented the irony of such behaviour, especially when some of these same women go on to make bold declarations about women’s empowerment on days like International Women’s Day.

The broadcaster also touched on body shaming — another issue she says often originates from women.

“I am a victim of body shaming, and it mainly came from women. I even had to write on my Facebook page that the rate at which women confidently body shame women is alarming. It gives men the pleasure to do same,” she noted.

According to MzGee, while she finds joy in seeing women succeed, she believes that the deep-seated habit of tearing each other down must be addressed with urgency.

“I get excited when women are excelling… but the things women do to women!” she exclaimed. “You’ll see people who cannot go a day without makeup come and say ‘look at her face without makeup’… and it’s mostly women writing those ill, nasty comments.”

“It’s about time we changed and treated our fellow woman kindly, respected our fellow woman and be gracious to our fellow woman. If we did this, there is no way a man would have the infantry to come and say rubbish and nonsense to a woman.”

MzGee began her media career in 2005 at Eagle FM while studying at Cape Coast Technical University. She later worked with Skyy TV and Pravda Radio. After participating in TV3’s ‘Hottest Host’ reality show, she interned at the station and pursued further education at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

In 2014, she joined the Multimedia Group, where she hosted programs like Campus Show and Day Break on Hitz FM. In 2018, she launched her own TV show, Gee Spot, on Joy Prime. She moved to Media General in 2019, taking on roles as a presenter and producer on TV3 and 3FM, where she hosted shows such as ShowBuzz and Mentor.

In March 2023, MzGee joined Despite Media as host of UTV’s United Showbiz.

Digital payments lag among local firms

0

Kenneth Ashigbey, CEO-Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications Kenneth Ashigbey, CEO-Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications

Ghana’s push toward a cash-light economy is facing a slower-than-expected uptake of digital payments by businesses, according to findings from a new nationwide study by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and Research for Financial Inclusion and Development (ReFinD) initiative.

The report, which forms part of the 2024 Integrated Business Establishment Survey (IBES), shows that only 37 percent of firms across the country currently accept or use digital payment platforms. Adoption is particularly low in the agricultural sector, where firms are least likely to use such services.

While this data underscores the transformative potential of digital finance for business growth and financial inclusion, uptake remains heavily concentrated in Greater Accra and a few regional capitals. Knowledge gaps, fears of frau and uncertainty over financial returns continue to limit broader adoption, especially among smaller enterprises.

Professor Peter Quartey, Director-Institute for Statistical Social and Economic Research (ISSER), said during the report’s launch that while progress has been made, digital payments remain underutilised in the business sector.

“Although cash still dominates, we’ve made some strides,” he noted. “But constraints like taxation – particularly the e-levy – and security concerns continue to hold back adoption.”

The study finds that most firms using digital platforms still rely on personal mobile money accounts, which are costlier and less efficient for business transactions. Larger companies tend to diversify their usage, leveraging merchant accounts that are more aligned with business needs and help drive revenue growth.

Despite the strong performance of female managers in boosting revenue and the adoption of merchant accounts, women-owned businesses often struggle with limited access to capital – one of the key barriers to greater adoption.

“Female managers tend to be better at managing firms,” said Prof. Quartey. “But the issue is that most women lack the capital to own or expand businesses and that limits their ability to invest in digital finance.”

Francis Annan, an assistant professor of economics at the University of California, Berkeley and a co-lead of the ReFinD project, described the results as “striking”. He said while nearly 95 percent of individuals surveyed have used digital payments as consumers, only about 37 percent of businesses reported doing the same.

“This large gap tells us a lot about selection issues in the market,” Mr. Annan said. “Firms face barriers like lack of understanding and concerns about security. For more educated users, these barriers aren’t binding. But across the broader firm landscape, these constraints are real and they matter.”

He believes that addressing these barriers will not only expand access to finance but also strengthen firm-level productivity and, by extension, the national economy.

“When firms grow, they hire more people, produce more and the entire economy benefits,” he said. “Starting from a low base means our interventions can yield high returns,” he added.

To boost adoption, the report recommends a multi-pronged strategy: improving cybersecurity in digital finance systems; incentivising female-led businesses; expanding digital infrastructure beyond major cities; and strengthening digital and financial literacy among business owners, managers and staff.

The report also advocates inclusive partnerships between academic researchers and ecosystem actors such as fintechs, mobile money operators, banks, regulators and policymakers to co-develop practical, data-driven solutions.

Kenneth Ashigbey, CEO-Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, stressed the importance of leveraging such insights to design inclusive financial products. “We’ve always known there’s a need to move beyond peer-to-peer to merchant payments,” he said. “The gender gap is clear and we now have the data to guide how we address it.”

Mr. Ashigbey also questioned continued use of the term ‘informal’ in reference to unregistered businesses, suggesting such labels may discourage support for their formalisation and integration into digital ecosystems. He called for a renewed focus on education and outreach, noting that smartphone penetration in areas like Wa is above the national average due to local educational efforts.

“This tells us we need to do more at the community level,” Mr. Ashigbey said. “Working with the Bank of Ghana and Ministry of Finance, we intend using this data to target educational campaigns more effectively.”

Ultimately, the report underscores that while digital finance holds immense promise for Ghana’s business ecosystem, realising its full potential will require deliberate, inclusive and sustained action across the public and private sectors.

Family of Junior Pope

One year after the death of popular Nollywood actor Junior Pope, his wife, Jennifer Awele Odonwodo, shared an emotional message on social media.

This is the first time Jennifer has spoken publicly since his passing in April 2024. In her post, she talked about how life has changed for her and their three sons — Jason, Jaden, and Jamon.

She said the pain of losing her husband is still very fresh and that the children often ask about the promises their father made before he died. These include plans to take Jason and Jaden to a football academy and buy a toy car for little Jamon.

“I still don’t have the right words to respond to Jason and Jaden,” she wrote. “Then the littlest one, Jamon… keeps asking when Daddy is bringing the big toy car he promised.”

Jennifer thanked everyone who has supported her and her family, saying they feel Junior Pope’s love around them every day.

“Though you’re no longer by our side, you live on in every memory, every smile, and every tear,” she added.

She ended her tribute by saying, “We cannot question God, right? May your soul rest in perfect peace, my love.”

Junior Pope was a well-loved actor in the Nigerian movie industry. His death left a big gap in Nollywood and in the hearts of many fans.

Otumfuo mediation will deliver lasting peace in Bawku – Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has condemned the renewed violence in Bawku, expressing confidence that the peace process led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will ultimately bring lasting stability to the area.

On Thursday, April 10, Bawku witnessed a violent confrontation between police and some youth, reportedly resulting in deaths and injuries. The private residence of Member of Parliament Mahama Ayariga was also allegedly set ablaze during the chaos.

Speaking at the Graduation Parade of the Ghana Military Academy on Friday, April 11, 2025, President Mahama reiterated his government’s commitment to restoring peace in the troubled enclave.

“The Ghana Armed Forces is engaged in several threats to maintain peace and security in our nation. One major flash point is the Bawku area. Only two days ago, a situation that took place in the market triggered an unfortunate loss of life and criminal vandalism of property. I wish to emphasise that nobody gains from this conflict and insecurities,” he said.

He noted that the mediation process initiated by the Asantehene, which brings all key stakeholders together, remains the best route to peace.

“We have triggered the Otumfuo mediation process, which has all the stakeholders to ensure a roadmap towards peace. I am assured by the Asantehene that the process will resume next week when he returns from his brief visit abroad,” he stated.

President Mahama also stressed that his administration will act on all allegations of criminality, promising thorough investigations.

“We will take all allegations of crime seriously and trigger our security service investigation machinery to go after criminals, no matter who they are. But let me state emphatically also that we do not have the resources and time to engage in any game of smoke and mirrors,” he added.

Seven popular Ghanaian songs sampled by foreign artistes

0

Ghanaian artistes, from L to R: Obrafour, Kofi Nti and Kojo Antwi Ghanaian artistes, from L to R: Obrafour, Kofi Nti and Kojo Antwi

Ghana’s music industry has produced timeless Highlife and Hiplife hits that continue to inspire artistes around the world.

Over the years, Ghanaian musicians have created sounds that remain relevant today, with some international artistes sampling these classics in their songs, often without consent.

Here is a list of some popular Ghanaian songs sampled by artistes from different countries over the years:

1. “Oye Ohene (Remix)” by Obrafour ft. Tinny (2003); sampled by Drake

Netizens were stunned when it was revealed that Drake’s 2022 song “Calling My Name” was a sample of Obrafour’s “Oye Ohene Remix”.

The phrase “Killer cut blood, killer cut”, originally featured at the beginning of Obrafour’s track, was included in Drake’s song.

This led to Obrafour suing the Canadian musician for $10 million over alleged copyright infringement.

2. “Odo Nwom” by Kofi Nti ft. Ofori Amponsah (2004), sampled by Tion Wayne ft. One Acen

British rapper Tion Wayne and singer One Acen sampled the romantic Highlife classic “Odo Nwom” in their 2019 track “2/10.”

The UK-based artistes used the melody to create a fresh urban Hip-hop vibe while still capturing the essence of the original Ghanaian love song, particularly the “Owaee, Owaee” part.

3. “Ahomka Wo Mu” by VIP (2003), sampled by Wizkid & Mut4Y

VIP’s hit song “Ahomka Wo Mu” is one of Ghana’s biggest Hiplife anthems.

Nigerian producer Mut4Y and superstar Wizkid sampled it for their 2017 hit “Manya” infusing the Ghanaian rhythm into Afrobeat.

Interestingly, Nigerian actress Patience Ozokwor (Mama G) also sampled the same song in her collaboration with Tonto Dikeh, titled “Make We Jolly”.

4. “Odofo Nnyi Ekyir Biara” by Ebo Taylor (1973), sampled by Kelly Rowland

American singer Kelly Rowland brought Ghanaian Highlife to the global stage when she sampled Ebo Taylor’s 1973 classic “Odofo Nnyi Ekyir Biara” in her 2021 song “Black Magic”.

Ebo Taylor’s influence as a pioneer of Highlife has since resonated in modern R&B and soul music.

5. “Odo Nwom” by Ofori Amponsah ft. Kofi Nti (2004), sampled by Rotimi ft. Afro B

Ofori Amponsah’s “Odo Nwom” was sampled not once but twice.

In 2019, American-Nigerian actor and singer Rotimi teamed up with UK-based Afro B to release “Mega Love” which heavily borrowed “Odo Nwom” rhythm.

6. “Nfa Me Nko Ho” by Kojo Antwi (2002), sampled by Yxng Le & Frenna

Kojo Antwi, known for his smooth vocals and powerful love songs, released “Nfa Me Nko Ho” in 2002.

Dutch artistes Yxng Le and Frenna sampled it in their 2021 hit “Wat Is Je Naam”.

7. “Kotosa” by Wutah (2008), sampled by Flavour

Wutah’s “Kotosa” was one of the biggest dance tracks in Ghana back in 2008.

Nigerian singer Flavour reworked the song into his 2012 track “Kwarikwa” (Remix).
